A LETTER TO THE SENIORS
DEAR FOOTBALL SENIOR S IN THE CLASS OF 2018,
W
of my school days slowly become blurrier, the memories of the 30 Friday nights I was able to enjoy in my high school career are clear as ever. My challenge to you seniors is to take nothing for granted and to give it everything you’ve got in every, single game. You may not realize it now, but high school football is about more than just yourself and your buddies. It’s a community thing. It’s about longstanding programs that have been around since the 1960s – if not earlier. Instead of thinking that you’re playing just for yourselves, please know that every time you wear that uniform, you’re representing your family, friends, classmates and every, single other person who has ever worn that uniform before you. I know that’s a strong statement and it’s all a lot to comprehend, but just know that you will remember
these times forever and you will learn lessons. I know I did. When I was a senior, our football team was not very good. We won just once in our first nine games. Our last game was against East St. John – one of the best teams in the state. Because a lot of my classmates thought we were going to lose the game, attendance for that 10th game was not great, though the joke was on them. With perseverance, hard work and a never-say-die attitude, my classmates overcame the odds and beat East St. John 39-36 on that night. Those who didn’t attend missed out on a game that experts say was one of the best in recent history in Louisiana prep athletics. Don’t let that be you!
In football, someone has to win, someone has to lose, someone has to be at the top and someone has to be at the bottom. No matter how the season shakes out, stick with it, never give up and don’t take no for an answer. That’s what sports are all about. Best of luck to everyone in the Class of 2018 in the upcoming football season. If you guys ever need me, shoot me an e-mail at casey@rushing-media. com or hit me up on Twitter @casey_gisclair. I’m always a message away. I appreciate so much the work you guys do to represent your schools. That helps make our community great. Always know that. • SINCERELY, CASEY GISCLAIR THE TIMES, MANAGING EDITOR

e’ve all waited long enough, but prep football is finally here. My co-workers asked me for help with our School Spirit edition and one thing needed was a letter to our seniors, which I usually recycle and polish every year. But you guys are special, so I decided to pen a whole new note for you guys to (hopefully) enjoy. Gentlemen, football is a special game and the lessons that you all learn will follow you for the rest of your lives. I never had the chance to play. I was born slow, unathletic and incapable of taking a hit. But high school football still had a remarkable impact on my life. I was a statistician, a fan, a classmate and a proud South Lafourche Tarpon – in the Class of 2005. Goodness, that makes me feel old. But while the memories of some

entral Lafourche has something that can’t be coached: firepower. The Trojans return arguably the best one-two punch in the area offensively in receivers David Robinson and Kenneth Poindexter. Robinson is riding high fresh off his commitment to Nicholls. Trojans coach Keith Menard said Robinson will play all over the field in 2017 to help the team thrive. The wildcard for the Trojans will be quarterback Jacob Barker, who will be getting his first real varsity action.

ost high school programs have large senior groups every season. But for smaller schools like CCA, those groups come around just once every few years. Unfortunately for the Lions, last year was one of those years, which has the team looking for new leaders with 2017 looming. But the cupboard isn’t bare. Offensively, CCA will rely heavily on Devante Johnson – a returning starter. At quarterback, last year’s backup Nich-

CARDINALS HOPE 2016’S YOUTH TURNS INTO 2017’S EXPERIENCE
White was young last season and it showed early on. The Cardinals lost their first four games to open the season – three of the setbacks coming by more than 10 points. But as the year progressed, the Cardinals got better and the team won a playoff game. Now older, the Cardinals plan to be strong all season in 2017. The Cardinals have a lot of explosiveness back – especially in their backfield.
E.D. White returns both Brandon LeGendre and Nik Shanklin – two gifted players with the football. The Cardinals also return several linemen, which excites coach Chris Bergeron.•

or the third time in three seasons, South Lafourche has a first-year head coach. The Tarpons hired Blake Forsythe this past spring after relieving 2016 coach Brandon Nowlin of his duties. Forsythe was the offensive coordinator at H.L. Bourgeois last season. “I’m going to be here a while,” he said. “My family is moving here. This is where I want to be. GATORS HOPE FOR BETTER KARMA, MORE WINS IN 2017 By CASEY GISCLAIR casey@rushing-media.com
R
ichard Curlin has been the head coach of South Terrebonne for more than two decades. He’s seen both good and bad. Nothing Curlin has seen has ever quite measured up to the difficult ride the Gators endured in 2016. South Terrebonne lost two players to tragic accidents – one before and one after the season – losses which still burn a hole of sorrow in the community.

errebonne made the playoffs in 2016, despite youth. But after losing several close games, Tigers coach Gary Hill is hoping that added experience will allow the team to take the next step in the new season. Hill said he likes what he’s seeing from his squad as the season draws near. The Tigers have one of the most skilled playmakers in the area.
