The Push for Stricter Gun Laws

President Obama is pushing Congress to sign proposals on tighter gun control.

His proposal comes after the Newtown, Colorado school shooting in December that left 26 people dead, including 20 young children and 6 adults.

In his executive orders signed on Jan. 16, Obama outlined 23 gun control measures including that states run stricter background checks on people looking to buy guns. His proposal also asks for states to ban the usage of assault weapons and gun magazines and to penalize those who sell guns to people that should not have access to guns.

In a meeting with press on Jan. 16, Obama declared full action on gun control, calling it a plan to secure and protect the lives of innocent children.

“This is our first task as a society, keeping our children safe,” Obama said in a televised press conference at the White House. “This is how we will be judged, and their voices should compel us to change.”

In the past month, Obama also said the usage of automatic guns have left many American citizens dead.

While Obama continues to push Congress to sign his proposals in Washington, New York is one of the first states to pass a bill that deals with gun control. The bill bans the use of assault weapons, while limiting the number of bullets allowed in a magazine, and strengthens rules that govern the mentally ill.

“People who are mentally ill should not have access to guns,” Cuomo said. “That’s common sense.”

Cuomo also said that setting standards for buying guns will help resolve the issue of violence.

“Let’s be at least able to say to people, yes we went through terrible situations,” Cuomo said. “But we saw, we responded and we acted, and we are doing something about it.”

Swish! Dunk! Score! The Ruskin Eagle’s Basketball Team is just coming off a major victory against Park Hill on Jan. 25 where the team earned Head Coach Gerry Marlin his 500th career win. It was even more special since it was the team’s Courtwarming game and the stands were full of cheering fans.

Teammates gathered around Marlin at the end of the game to celebrate.

“It’s a blessing for Coach, and it’s even better to be a part of it,” senior Tyron Daniel said.

“It was inevitable, it was going to happen,” Marlin said after the game. “But I am glad to get the monkey off my back.”

Obama’s Plan will save Lives!

I agree with all of Obama’s proposals for gun control especially when it comes to my own safety. When background checks are made, people are checked on past history in their lives such as any felonies or jail time. Also they are used to check your identity. There have been a number of identity thefts and for that reason background checks come in handy.

Obama is in the process of trying to pass stricter gun laws and I agree that he needs to have this finished as soon as possible. I can not live another day wondering if I will get to school safely without someone running and threatening me at gunpoint. Gun violence is cruel and no one deserves it all.

Ban Obama’s Gun Proposals

Since the Sandy Hook Shooting in Colorado, President Barack Obama has made proposals to stop gun violence in our community. However, I believe that his proposals are very much feeble-minded, and has the American citizens upset and worried. More so, it’s crazy to create laws that will hurt and damage the way the American people view life.

Since our founding fathers established freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition, Americans are known to have a democratic lifestyle, where you have a right to make your own decisions regardless of what other people think and if you choose to make poor decisions, it’s on you to pay the consequences.

So whatever happened to that lifestyle that we once valued and shared? Did we all just wake up one morning and decide to become a tyrannical society where we ignore the rights of others?

I believe we have come to that conclusion. In fact, I believe the political party has put aside the American people's right to the Second Amendment. The right to bear arms.

we just focus on schools? How about more security at movie theaters where people like to hangout. Maybe the supermarkets? How about at a gas station? The point is, criminals shoot at random areas at random people not just schools, and if we're going to have stricter securities there should be more securities in every area that is public to the people.

Since the 17th Century, the United States has been a free country and has a democratic lifestyle. Our founding fathers created the Bill of Rights for us to live in a free society not to be controlled by our government.We are the people to decide what’s right and what’s wrong. Public laws are passed due to our interests and values.

It is not the government or the President’s right to have the last word.

I believe that we should not be banned of our rights just because of individuals harming others. We are not perfect but we are humans who deserve respect. Banning assault weapons, gun magazines, and restricting the use of buying guns is absolutely violating our right to the Second Amendment and also our right to privacy. Those who decide to kill people should be given consequences for their actions not people who do no harm in their communities.

On Jan. 1, Missouri minimum wage increased ten cents.

Now, minimum wage workers will be earning $7.35 an hour.

Some are sceptical about if they’ll even see the difference, but a little more money is always good.

Missouri is one of ten states who raised their minimum wage to $7.35. This raise is because Missouri voters passed a law in 2006 that automatically adjusts the state’s minimum wage every year to

keep up with the pace of the rising cost of living.

Craig Butler a manager at McDonalds on 87th and Blue Ridge Blvd., said she doesn’t

really believe that this 10 cents will make much of a difference.

In 2006, Missouri’s minimum wage was only $5.15, but

by July of 2009 it had risen to

$7.25 an hour. The last time there was an increase was a little over three years ago.

An effort to raise Missouri’s minimum wage to $8.25 nearly reached the November ballot this year, but the petition was rejected by the Secretary of State’s office as having too few valid signatures of registered voters. The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012 was an act set by Rep. George Miller that was made to make minimum wage go from $7.25 to $9.80 per hour. This bill was introduced on July 26, 2012, but was not enacted.

Other states that have increased their minimum wages include Washington, Oregon, Ohio, Montana, Florida, Colorado, Vermont, and Arizona.

The average of all these increases is roughly 15 cents.

uring the Ruskin High School basketball game on Jan. 25, the candidates for the Courtwarming crowning began to prepare themselves for what was going to happen next.

Many of the candidates said they were all nerves as a whole. In an unusual twist, twins Tyron and Tyler Daniel were both nominated for Courtwarming King. Other senior King candidates included: Caleb Green, William Brandon Garner, Brian Matthews, Dylan Bench, Jason Chang, and Mondre Davis. Tyron said that his family members tried their best to brighten up the their mood and relieve their nerves.

When the votes were counted, it was Tyron that came out on top as the 2013 Homecoming King. But brother Tyler was right behind, winning the King Runner-Up. Tyron said he was amazed and happy to win King, but was nervous about running against his brother.

“It was weird having to

turn against my brother just to win,” Tyron said.

The drama was no less for the Princess and Queen competition with eight seniors running for Queen. Senior Jonnae Stevenson was crowned the 2013 Courtwarming Queen.

First Runner-up was Jasmine Lyman, Second Runner-up was Mae Isidro. Completing the court was Junior Princess Khadijat Badejo, and Sophomore Princess Cierra Page.

Other nominees included: Senior Queen candidates Sara Nichols, Tabitha Robinson, Jasmyn White, Erica Garner, and Brinisha McIntosh.

The candidates were nominated by various active groups at the school and the students at Ruskin High School voted for the winners.

organized the Courtwarming events, along with her student government class. She said her main focus was to make sure everybody knew what was going on, and that everything was organized.

“The assembly and game went well. The candidates looked amazing, and everybody was awesome,” Sixta said.

After the crowning, students went to the White-Out Snowball Bash dance in the RHS cafeteria to enjoy themselves for the evening. Students said that this Courtwarming was by far the best dance Ruskin has had all year. The event turned out to be very well-planned and organized.

Students enjoyed themselves and all candidates left with a smile on their face.

“This dance was one of the best dances Ruskin has had,” Sena Ford said.

Does Your Sign Fit You? Bitter or Better for 2013?

eople think their signs really reflect who they are, while others think their signs are just a waste of time. Zodiac signs are signs that represent 12 equal segments or divisions of the zodiac.

Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo,Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. With each sign comes a different description and it shows how people think of themselves based off their sign.

“I am a Capricorn, my sign really fits who I am because I always think I know it all,” junior Marissa Caskey said.

People sometimes even base their relationships off of their signs. For example, horoscopes show that Aries and Gemini are good matches because they’re both energetic and their personalities and characteristics are complementary to each other.

“I do believe every zodiac sign has a perfect match. You’ll never know until you try,” Caskey said.

People also often get judged based on their signs.

There’s the phrase “Capricorns think they know it all” or that “Leo think they're better than everybody,” So when asked their sign people often get a million different responses. Being judged off your sign is like judging a book by its cover. Just

because of their sign doesn’t mean that’s who they really are.

“When I usually tell people I am a Gemini, they usually say either I’m bipolar or I have a attitude problem. I don’t want people judging me based off a bunch of words that don’t really describe who I am,” Junior Dontierra Morris said.

Some people tend to take their sign not so seriously or play it as a non-factor. There are

many people that have said “A zodiac sign is a waste of time” or “ What is a zodiac sign?”

“A zodiac sign isn’t important to me, it’s a waste of time,” sophomore Corey Heaton said.

When it comes to the New Year and learning new things to improve yourself, or becoming a better person within, you want to start off planning and making goals for yourself. When you make a goal you want to make one you are able to reach, a goal that is not too hard and a goal that will not be too easy. You want to challenge yourself and Ruskin High School Science teacher Troy Kreiling is doing just that.

“I want to continue to keep improving on teaching to be a better teacher in 2013,” Kreiling said.

When choosing or setting goals, you face many challenges that need changing. Such as people getting in your way and not being considerate of your needs.

“I am trying to find better and different ways to keep up with technology in today’s generation,” Kreiling said. “If I could do that I can be a better teacher.”

Senior Jewelle Anderson feels that dealing with other peers at school can be challenging also.

“Some are all about themselves and could care less about other peoples views. I can’t wait to graduate,” Anderson said.

“Mama” Thriller of the Year

The movie “Mama” was a very good movie because it involves love, mystery and change. I give it four out five popcorn bags.

When I went into the AMC Independence Theatres, I was thinking it was going to be a typical scary movie like “Saw” or “The Others.” But it was way more than just a scary movie.

The movie was very heartfelt.

There were a couple of times that I wanted to cry.

The actors did an amazing job the way they loved and cared for one another and how the movie showed how children can change people within a blink of an eye. Whether it was a ghost or human, they both loved the same. My reason for not giving the movie five out of five is because I thought “Mama” (the ghost) looked a little fake as in a cartoon-look.

With today’s technology, I felt the graphics could've been a little better, but overall the plot of this movie was amazing.

Dad comes rushing in the door with tears and a look of

hurt on his face. He gets his two daughters and runs out the door not having clue to where they are going. The two girls were in the back seat saying, “Daddy where are we going ?” You can look at his face and you can

see that something’s not right.

There were tears running down his face. You could feel that he was going to do something crazy. He was going really fast on a snowy street sliding on an open road. A little voice comes tumbling in “Daddy why are you going so fast?’’

“Passing college algebra and communication arts are two things I will have trouble with or encounter for the 2013 year. I also face coming to school on time as a big one,” Walker said.

There always has to be a plan to overcome these challenges and beat them so you will be able to achieve your goals, such as asking for help or even seeking guidance to better the situation and yourself.

“Each year I learn more

and more, I will continue to keep asking questions for guidance,’” Kreiling said. “Mr. (Larry) Walker is a very big help when it comes to technology and also other science teachers,” Kreiling said.

The first step of goal planning is different for everyone and levels off at different places. Some people set long term goals and some may set short term goals. Senior Andre Walker plans on making long term goals.

“My biggest goal of the year is to graduate from high school,” I would like to also

work. They walked in the white cold snow with nothing in sight.

One of the daughters broke her glasses so she couldn't see much of anything. As they were walking through the thick snow they see a small house.

His baby girl looks through the window and she sees a person floating in thin air. ‘’Daddy, there is a woman outside floating!’’

He just ignores her while he was making a fire to keep warm. He goes to the back and pulls a gun out and starts busting out in tears saying “why? why? why?”

He slowly walks into the living room where his daughter was. He takes off her glasses and says “You know I love you?‘’ She replies with a “yes.”

He tells her to turn around and he pulls out this small gun and slowly puts it to her head and suddenly something black comes from the ceiling and BOOM! He is gone.

Feel the excitement? This was only the first ten minutes.

I highly recommend you to see this movie if you want to know what happens next. get promoted to a higher level at my job, and get accepted into more colleges,” Walker said.

Those goals can be personal or financial. Kreiling isn’t really planning on personal goals but he did recently acquire a new family member.

“I do not plan on making any changes to myself personally but I really just plan on spending time with my new grandson and getting to know him more,” Kreiling said.

Students are also ones to plan and make goals for themselves. Anderson plans on focusing more on herself and being more prepared.

“I want to become more fluent in Russian, and I would love to study Anatomy and Physiology a little bit more,” Anderson said.

For 2013 some people find themselves changing dramatically either in a good way becoming better or in a bad way, becoming bitter.

“I find myself becoming a better person, I am doing the right things, helping out and trying to have more patience with myself and others,” Kreiling said.

Feb. 14, also originally known as The Feast of Saint Valentine, is an occasion when people express their love for each other. Although Valentine’s Day is not a public holiday because of course we do have school and nobody is taking off work. But this day, for some, takes lots of preparation. In Ruskin High School there are numerous young love couples. Brand new ones and ones that have been dating for months or even years.

Seniors Andria Shelby and Michael Goodrich have been dating since Valentine’s Day last year. What an anniversary!

“I want to get Mike a big teddy bear and I just want some chocolates,” Shelby said. “It’s the thought that counts.”

Another couple that’s been together for ever is David Norton and Sonseray Hines, both juniors. They have been together for a couple of years.

“Ray and I have been together since our freshman year,” Norton said.

also have a beautiful baby girl together.

“I want David to get me some type of jewelry and I might get him an outfit or a watch,” Hines said.

Norton is thinking about the same thing.

“I’m going to get Ray diamonds. I know she likes diamonds,” Norton said.

On the other side, chocolates aren’t just the perfect gifts either.

Junior Diana Moralez said she wants to get something for her boyfriend Brett Brisco that has something to do with his hobbies.

“Brett really likes cooking and he loves music. So I was thinking that it has to have something to do with that,” Moralez said.

This last couple shows that age is nothing but a number.

Keith Johnson a senior and Kristal Whitaker a sophomore are a couple who has been dating since July 2, 2012.

“I really don’t need anything else but his love and Keith doesn’t like candy so I’ll probably get him a teddy bear,”Whitaker said.

Valentine’s Day is not just for couples, it’s for anyone. Daughters and their moms, dads and their sons, if you love someone show them and showing them doesn’t have to always be with material things.

Grapplers Keeping Pride in the Matches

he Ruskin Wrestling Team faced some difficult challenges this season, winning zero of their matches so far as a team. Although some have won their matches individually, coach Patrick Truman said that the open slots are what made it hard for them to win matches.

“In order to wrestle, your weight has to be the same as your opponent,” Truman said.

“And when you cannot find someone that weighs the exact same weight as you, you cannot wrestle, you cannot play.”

Even though the wrestling team has not yet won as a team this season, Truman is not giving up on his boys.

“I want to put some of them through to the state championship,” Truman said. “I believe that they can get there if they continue to do good on their individual matches.”

Encouraging his team to do their absolute best when facing

their opponent, Truman said he wants his team to put their best effort into every match.

“Sport is as close to life as you can get,” Truman said.

“When you sacrifice for what you want, then you will achieve your goal.”

Truman also believes that in order for his boys to improve on their techniques, they have to be willing to practice by the minute.

“Every day we practice,” Truman said. “We stretch, do practice drills and get down to wrestling.”

However, practicing also means not losing your energy in a match.

“Laziness is a fast way to lose in a match,” Truman said.

“You have to be in full energy when facing your opponent and that is something I have to remind my boys.”

Truman also feels that if his team can continue to keep in shape, that their ability to wrestle will get better.

“The more you keep your body structure in good health, the better you will become a better wrestler.”Wrestling for three years, varsity wrestler Jamal Karriem said that practicing wrestling helps him keep his energy when facing his opponent.

“The more I practiced, the more I got better,” Karriem said. ”And now I’m able to win my individual matches.”

Winning 21 out of 29 of his individual matches, Karriem said his goal now is to go to State.

“It’s very hard to be a participant in a state wrestling team match,” Karriem said.

“But I have faith the I can do it.

If I can continue doing well in my individual matches, I will get there.”

Kariem’s teammate, Jamonty Hampton said he, too, would like to go to the state championship.

“I want to be a State Champion,” Hampton said. “I will work hard and continue to stay focused to make this dream become a reality.”

‘FROZEN FANNIES’ PLUNGED FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS RuskinHigh School’s team of ‘Frozen Fannies’ jumped in the icy waters of Longview Lake for the annual Polar Plunge Saturday, Jan. 26. The annual event is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Missouri.

Ruskin Counselor Shelli Copas organized the ‘Frozen Fannies’ and each year, more of her friends have joined the group.

“My passion for Special Olympics started in eighthgrade when I volunteered at a camp for kids with special needs,” Copas said. “I decided I would take the Polar Plunge a few years ago because it coincided with my birthday. It was

the best present I ever got!”

Joining Copas for the quick swim were Carla Sole, Kelly Michale, Stacy Johnson, Laura Anderson, Nicole Ruiz, Carri Moutray, Kim Sixta, Cristin Blunt, Shannon Higgins, Jen Coker and Lindsey Nelson. Copas and the rest of her ‘Frozen Fannies’ created personal Polar Plunge webpages with a team goal of raising $3,000.

Opening ceremonies began at noon and everyone jumped into the lake at 12:30 p.m. Ruskin High School’s JROTC was the color guard during the opening ceremonies.

Lady Eagles Having a Riveting Season

orking together as a team with the help of Coach Greg Stevens, the Lady Eagles have had an extraordinary season with a record at press time of 11-6. The Lady Eagles, being led by their starting five players, are looking forward to the 8 games left in the season. They are all hoping to come out as the number one seed in districts.

Stevens said the team went into the season with intentions to improve.

“We’ve definitely been seeing improvements. They’re learning the game. The girls are really maturing,” Stevens said.

The girls have won a record of four more games than last year’s season.

“My goal was to be better than I was last year, and yes I believe I have accomplished that,” junior guard Erionne Gant said.

Being recognized as one of the more elite players on the team, Gant said it feels good knowing that all her hard work has paid off.

“My goals were to average more points than last year, play good defense, have less attitude and just learn to keep my head in the game. Yes, I do believe I have accomplished them,” said Austin Richardson, sophomore guard.

According to Stevens, Richardson is also an elite player on the team. As would any proud player, Richardson feels she deserves that recognition.

She said she worked hard for it and put in work to be better for, not only her team, but herself.

Although Richardson is one of

the younger girls on the team, she had previous experience in the game of basketball before attending Ruskin.

“I played in AAU since I was 6,” said Richardson.

But she wasn’t the only young lady on the team who came to Stevens with experience in the game. Gant said that she had been playing with AAU since she was 3, giving her a lifetime of experience.

This year hasn’t been all wins. The team has had some exciting victories, and some close losses with a current record of 8-11, which has disappointed some of the players.

“We should’ve won half of the games we lost,” senior Deonte Collins said. “It just seems like we can’t win.”

Daniel agreed.

“We’re losing to teams we shouldn’t be losing to, but we’re hanging in there,” Daniel said.

But, Marlin has faith in his team and believes there are many more things to accomplish during this year’s season.

“We’re right at the point where conference starts. Everything we wish to accomplish is still in front of us,” Marlin said.

Marlin noted that there have been a few obstacles to get in the way of his goal to make the best team out of the players and to win the conference championship, districts, and play offs.

“We have had some struggles to keep players eligible,” Marlin said.

Through the struggles and the losses, the team members say they still have other things to look forward to and to ac-

complish.

“I want to win the conference championship and have a memorable season with my team,” Collins said.

Daniels had the same response.

“I hope we win districts and win Eagles Varsity Basketball team all huddle around Coach Gerry Marlin after the courtwarming conference,” The game to congratulate him on his 500th Career Win. Daniel said.

Although there are a few accomplishments the Eagles hope to achieve, they have some doubts in mind that sometimes bring them down.

“I dislike when the team doesn’t seem dedicated,” Collins said.

Despite the negative thoughts, they seem to keep each other up even through tough times.

“We bring each other up through bad games,” Collins said.
