My dog wouldn’t stop barking, my phone wouldn’t stop ringing, and none of my shoes would match the pants I put on. To top it all off, it was a Monday morning. It was the shoes that got me the most, though I was stuck between the two pairs with no idea which color to go with.
laugh along. I chose the latter and let my team go wild. They laughed until they cried, made funny jokes, and finally took a picture of me and posted it on Facebook. By the end of the day I felt like a Hollywood celebrity. The post of me wearing two different shoes got hundreds of likes and dozens of comments.
My wife was curiously watching me struggle. Finally, she showed some mercy and said, “Babe, how about you put the blue shoe on one foot, and the gray one on the other and I will tell you which one looks better.” So I did. It took her five seconds to choose the color. I felt a huge relief and finally rushed to work.
I swear this day will go down in the history of our publishing house. It will be one of those stories they tell newbies in the break room. It will also always remind me of how you can make lemonade when life gives you lemons. Putting a positive spin on the curveballs of life is the theme of our Fall issue.
I got to the office just in time for our management team briefing. Ten minutes into the meeting I realized that my employees were having way too much fun for a Monday morning. Giggles, shaded smiles, something was clearly going on. Finally one of them couldn’t hold it any longer and said, “Boss, do you know you are wearing two different shoes?” That’s when I realized that I was so anxious to get out of the house that I completely forgot to remove one of the shoes to wear a matching pair.

Do you know how a job interview was held in ancient Russia? Prospective employees were invited to eat with the employer. The way the candidates ate their food partially determined whether or not they would be hired. If a person ate well and had a healthy appetite they were considered to be in good health, on good terms with the proprietor, and promised to be a productive worker.
Food has always played an imperative role in the Slavic culture. It is a part of our traditions and it stretches far beyond meeting our basic needs. It is hard to imagine any Slavic gathering without cooking. Whether it’s a birthday party, Christmas Eve, or Easter morning, food always plays a major role in each celebration. More so, joining around the dinner table is a daily ritual deeply cherished in Slavic families. Slavic food traditions have been influenced by many cultures that have intertwined for centuries. From the French overtones left from the Russian Imperial Court of 1800’s to national dishes of the 15 republics of the former Soviet Union, Slavic cuisine is a fusion of flavors, traditions, and recipes. Here is a glimpse of a classic Slavic Holiday Meal.

Armenian Shish Kebob – large pieces of meat marinated overnight, threaded on skewers with pieces of onions and fresh vegetables and grilled over open fire. It is often served on skewers right from the grill. Kebobs originated from the Middle East and became a traditional dish of the Caucasus region of Russia.
Uzbek Plov – a cult rice dish that comes from Uzbakistan. It’s a heart satisfying mixture of rice, lamb, carrots, chickpeas and spices stirred together in a large cast iron bowl and preferably cooked over wood fire. Plov is traditionally cooked by men, so it’s the perfect excuse for women to take a break from the kitchen.

Ukrainian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Golubtsi) – a Ukrainian food tradition that is well welcomed in any Slavic household for any occasion. It’s made of cabbage leaves stuffed with a mouthwatering mixture of ground beef, rice, and vegetables. It is usually baked in the oven until tender and served hot with a side of sour cream.

She looks the part: beautiful full lips, slender silhouette, waistlong shiny hair. She easily fits the definition of a beauty queen or a designer label model. Maybe that’s why people are always caught by surprise when they find out what she does for a living.

Story the
Marianna’s story sounds like a good plot for an engaging reality TV show.
She was born and raised in a Siberian region of Russian, a place that pretty much matches the stereotypes about Russian scenery – freezing cold winters with temperatures reaching well below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, cities surrounded by ancient forests inhabited with wolves and bears. Her family immigrated to the US and settled in Sacramento, California when Marianna was in her early teens. Despite the fact that her mother was a mathematician, the girl didn’t care much for math or science in school. Being a freespirited and artistic individual, Marianna was preoccupied with dance and art-her true passions. Although she was an artist at heart, Marianna maintained a high GPA in high school and graduated from the International Baccalaureate Programme with honors. She decided she wanted to become a pharmacist because she was comfortable with her academic abilities and wanted to get a degree that would allow her to be self-sufficient and financially stable as soon as she graduated. 20

When Marianna was graduating High School, she began taking steps towards achieving her goal. She became certified as a pharmacy technician and began her part-time job at a pharmacy while going through the pre-pharmacy program at American River College. In 2008 she moved to San Francisco-the city she fell in love with upon her first visit. She continued her education and career there. Marianna completed her pre-pharmacy requirements and even applied to pharmacy schools. At that time she realized that being a pharmacist was not her calling. Luckily during her studies she felt a newly discovered passion for science, and she found that science can be very creative and, most importantly, meaningful. This is when she began looking for work in the biotech industry. During her search she discovered an open position for a Lab Technician at Sutro Biopharma, a startup biotech company. Shortly thereafter she also began attending San Francisco State University, full time, majoring in biochemistry and working 30 WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM
hours a week at Sutro. Life was not easy for those two years, but this is when the values Marianna grew up with played a major role. Marianna and her brother were raised by a single mother, Natalia Pristupa, a beautiful woman with advanced education and a firm character. Natalia raised her two children in Russia in the 90’s - a difficult decade in Russian history. She ran a successful business and was a prominent figure in her city’s fashion industry. Upon arrival to the US she evaluated her degree and became a math professor at the American River College. She also obtained an RN degree and developed a successful career in the medical industry while bringing up her two teenage children.. Inspired by her mother’s example, Marianna learned to appreciate education and self-sufficiency. Biology and chemistry intimidate most people, but in Marianna’s opinion the most complex part of science are names that scientists use to describe their processes. If science is broken down into
small manageable parts, it is very accessible and fascinating. Her favorite subjects were biochemistry and immunology because the two explained the intricacies and the perfect design of a human organism. Marianna was hired by Sutro as a Research Associate as soon as she received her degree. She spent a total of 5 years working at this company and gained a lot of experience in process development for large molecules, also known as Biologics. Since then Marianna has moved on from the lab and has begun working in the tech industry for a UK company called IDBS. Now, as a business consultant there she works with top biotech companies such as Pfizer, Bayer, Novartis and others to help them optimize their processes and ensure successful integration of IDBS software. She is happy and grateful to use her academic, professional and life experience in her current position which she feels makes client’s professional lives easier and more enjoyable.
When Marianna first heard about Miss Russian California, it caught her attention because the pageant provided an opportunity to get out in the community, raise awareness for certain issues, and pay tribute to her Slavic heritage. She entered the contest and a few weeks later was crowned as the most beautiful woman of 2015 among other Slavic Californians. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Electric cars seem to be the latest trend in the auto industry these days.
If a few years ago cars like Prius were considered a flick of meticulous environmentalists, today most leading auto makers strive to release their own electric models.
The variety of features this technology offers is especially fascinating. Chevy’s new fuel efficient Spark can go up to 119 mpg, Audi’s wicked Audi A3 e-Tron reaches 0 to 60 mph in a 4.9 seconds while Porsche’s luxurious Cayenne S E-Hybrid goes up to 151 mph. It is a luxury car that is priced well over $100K when fully loaded. Despite being pretty high in the price range, the automaker managed to claim a good share of the US market, catching up in sales with the long-time market leaders such as Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and Audi A8. In Norway, which is the European leader in oil-production, Tesla has become a best-selling car, and not just among electric vehicles, but overall! This popularity is justified not only by the use of the highest quality materials and the car’s attractiveness from the aesthetic standpoint, but also by the fact that the Tesla Model S has been acclaimed as the safest automobile on the road today.

lectric cars are considered to be a big breakthrough of the modern days auto industry. But did you know that this technology was developed over 150 years ago? The first electrically powered automobile appeared as early as the 1840’s. In 1899, an electric car successfully passed the 60 mph speed barrier.
However, the first electric vehicles had some serious shortcomings that caused the evolving technology to vanish from the market until recently. For instance, the batteries weighed a lot, charging required a long time, and bad fuel efficiency only allowed for a very short driving range on one charge. All that aside, it was the appearance and proliferation of the internal

Nissan Leaf is officially the best-selling electric car in the world.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance has reported almost 200,000 units of this zero-emissions car sold in 2014. According to the company’s official statistics, this translates into saving nearly 28 million gallons of oil and sparing the atmosphere of over 501 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Leaf is also the most affordable model out of the four we feature. Its base model is priced under $30K which makes it an ideal combination of price, quality, and efficiency. Although it only offers around 80 miles on a full charge, the Leaf’s 114 MPGe makes up for the relatively short driving range.

Electric car technology research has been resurrected by two adverse reasons – heavy air pollution and skyrocketing gas prices. At the end of the 20th century the number of metropolitan residents who were suffering
from asthma, allergies, and headaches grew sevenfold as a result of severe air pollution. Growing public concern in combination with climbing oil prices finally made automakers look for alternative energy sources. It took manufacturers almost half a century to begin testing and implementing electric motors in their product lines. By the

Now, something that was once only in the realm of exotic supercars is within the price range of the average buyer. The result of the implementation of this material is impressive – the weight of the i3 is only around 2,600 pounds.
It’s a new electric sports car (!) which will be presented at the 2015 SEMA exhibition in Las Vegas. It’s called The Immortus and it was developed by a Melbourne-based startup named EVX in collaboration with engineers from Swinburne University of Technology. The developers claim that in terms of endurance this car is basically infinite: “As long as the sun shines, The Immortus lives,” is their slogan.
This electric marvel is my personal favorite.
While it has rather compact exterior dimensions, the i3 is amazingly spacious inside. Spirited acceleration, excellent handling, a comfort level worthy of its esteemed manufacturer, and a mind blowing multimedia system – the i3 has it all. Add to that two very exotic qualities: library-grade silence in the interior and the ability to be driven using only one pedal.

This innovational leap of faith earned the consumers trust, but that still could not be considered a complete victory for the electric motor. The company that truly revolutionized and made a
huge splash in the world of electric automobiles is Tesla. Under the leadership of its charismatic CEO Elon Musk, Tesla built an electric car for mass production. What's more interesting, Tesla made a public announcement that the company won't patent its ideas thus giving a green light to manufacturers worldwide to take a confident step into the future.
The car features frontal aerodynamics, a 10kWh battery, photovoltaic panels measuring 7 ft.² built into the roof, and the high efficiency of those solar panels (22%). This electric car can go 340 miles without charging at an average speed of 50 mph and top speed of over 90. Reaching 60 mph takes less than seven seconds. Under certain conditions The Immortus’ range without charging can be unlimited!

A little mystery never hurts, but for those of you that are curious to know, here are five things that are certainly true about Russian women.

I like to leave my acquaintances in the dark about the bears, snow, and booze, but the last question always makes me laugh.

A LOT!
If you’ve ever seen a well dressed woman wearing high heels while walking down the street, shopping at the mall, or picking-up groceries, the chances are she was probably Russian. Every Russian woman has at least one pair of bad heels in her closet. We like to look good, whether for church service on Sunday, for work on Monday, or the grocery store on a Tuesday. No matter how old we get, we always take care of ourselves and try to look stylish, diligent, and sometimes a little overdressed.

Food is a big part of our culture. We cook at home and love to share meals with friends and family. If you come over to our house we won’t let you go until we feed you. It’s just the way we are, so you better come hungry.

Sacramento has no shortage of restaurants but there are a select few that make our hearts go pitter patter and our bellies grumble just a little louder. These restaurants are famous for their ambience, service, location, and good Yelp reviews, but what really keeps guests coming back is their food. There is no better
way to learn about the food a restaurant offers than firsthand from the chef who makes it. We asked four executives chefs of some of the best restaurants in the capitol region to share their backgrounds, tricks, and kitchen disaster stories. Chef McCown and his team prepare the food right in front of patrons, explaining the process and concept of every course. Dinner service includes a five-course prix fixe menu, an interactive ‘Intermission’ menu, water, coffee and tea. The menu changes every month and features seasonal ingredients bringing the freshest flavors of the season on to the plate. Randall Selland, the owner of The Kitchen, is known as “Sacramento’s Father of Farm-to-Fork.” Selland is passionate about fresh ingredients which he gets from the local farmers. The service at The Kitchen is impeccable. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure a dining experience like no other.
A KITCHEN DISASTER STORY: “I was working for a well-known Bay Area wine country restaurant. It was the New Year’s Eve, and we had a very complicated menu. We made 125 gallons of consommé (a type of soup). We’re talking thousands of dollars, and a week’s worth of work. We decided to heat up all 125 gallons at once. We heated up a steam jacket and dropped the gelatinous stock in. When a 40 pound jello shot hit the hot steam jacket bottom it was shot back into the air and exploded into a million pieces. Priceless!”

After completing his culinary training at the California Culinary Academy, McCown had the opportunity of working at some of the best restaurants in San Fransisco. Michelin stared La Folie, and Fleur de Lys, are among those. Later, McCown together with Michelin rated Chef Scott Carsberg opened the award winning restaurant Lampreia in Seatle, Washington. McCown’s cuisine was described as “richly flavored meals that offer both comfort and complexity”, by The Seattle Times. McCown then moved on to open up Martini House, in St. Helena. A few jobs and years later, McCown joined the Selland Family Restaurants to become the Executive Chef at Ella. McCown went on to opening up Goose & Gander, a highly acclaimed gastro pub restaurant in Napa Valley. Most recently, Chef McCown decided to come back to Sacramento as The Kitchen’s Executive. McCown says that he promised his family to stay here at least for the next 10 years, and Sacramento is hoping that he sticks to his promise. Chef Quentin “Q” Bennett comes from humble beginnings. Q, the youngest of ten boys, was often shadowing his single mother as she cooked for her big family.

The basic skills Q learned from his mother were strengthened when he spent some time as a dishwasher, and then a cook in a military kitchens. Chef Q doesn’t claim to be a self-taught chef, but instead credits his mother, the military, and other amazing chefs for his culinary training. Chef Q has cooked all over the world for a wide variety of A-list stars, Universal and Paramount Studios sets, and even President Clinton! Enthusiasm and a positive attitude about his job are the two most striking features of the Chef. He chooses to look at the glass as being half full, and encourages his staff to do the same. Chef Q currently works as the Executive Chef at Roseville’s ASR Restaurant &Lounge. ASR serves a wide array of classic American dishes with a twist. For example, their chicken and waffles dish consists of a fried Cornish game hen, Belgian waffles, and brown butter maple sauce. ASR has quite the happy hour menu, with items like Artichoke Beignets starting at $3. If you’re looking for a place to host a special event, come to ASR to enjoy their private dining room, or VIP lounge. The modern and sleek venue radiates a sophisticated ambiance, and the food is a wonderful testament of the talented chef.

WHAT DO YOU DO DURING A DAY OFF? “I grew up in a single mom household, so I feel that it’s my duty to give back to the less fortunate. I teach culinary, and etiquette class to the inner city youth at Space of Grace Youth Academy in Sacramento. We cook together, and eat food that the teens probably wouldn’t ever eat otherwise. Besides that, I love spending time with my family. On Sundays, we have about 25 friends and family come over for what we call “Fat Sundays”. I choose the food I cook for them, and there is no counting calories, we just enjoy some good food.” RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Chef Silva’s food is approachable, yet refined. Silva combines flavors and colors to create dishes that look just as good as they taste. Rustically European styled Cibo7 is warm and welcoming. The name Mulvaney’s came from “It’s a Wonderful Life”, where Jimmy Stewart left home to build his future, only to come back after realizing that his future was investing in his own community. We’ve all been there, trying on our parents shoes and adding a little extra when asked about our age, because being ten and a half was just so much cooler than being just ten. Eventually we all grow up and begin to play by the world’s rules. We work hard all week so we can kick back and relax on the weekend. We put ourselves through school and long hours at the office so we could afford a cool car, a RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
dream house, or Black Friday shopping sprees. As time goes we get busier with life and there is something that we miss along the way. I’m not talking about the thinning hair or that crazy metabolism that used to let you swallow a pig before their bedtime and still wake up starving. I am talking about the ability to explore the world and create new opportunities; the gift of learning new things and making new friendships.

Did you know that people learn more new things during the first three years than the rest of their lifetime? Children are capable of digesting an unlimited amount of new information and curiosity is the key. There is nothing that doesn’t get them interested. Try to imagine what you could be like if you would continue exploring the world like that. There is nothing that limits you from widening your horizons except your own weariness. Push yourself to try new things so you can evolve in whatever it is you like doing. Subscribe to a new group on Facebook, check out that Ethiopian or Brazilian restaurant you keep hearing about, get out of the house and explore new places on the weekend, or dare yourself to hit the karaoke bar on a Friday night.
When I was a child all I needed to do to find a new BFF was to be left unsupervised for a few minutes. I could make friends literally anywhere, on a playground, in line at a grocery store, on a bus stop, you name it. All I had to do was say Hi and ask for my companion’s name, and the friendship was sealed. We have an incredible ability to connect with other people when we are young. We don’t judge people by their skin color, occupation, or zip code. Unfortunately, we become less openminded as we grow older. We often find our comfort zone and become extremely selective in letting others in. Maybe we should forget about social stereotypes, let go of the fears of past mistakes, and open ourselves to new connections. Research shows that people who communicate more do better at work and have a more fulfilling personal life.
We’ve all seen children crying their eyes out because they hurt themselves and then suddenly laughing about something the next minute. Children don’t hold on to negative emotions. They let go easily and continue on enjoying their life. What about us grownups? We can easily remember how someone yelled at us at work a year ago, how we were mistreated by a spouse, or betrayed by a friend. We collect skeletons in our closet, become bitter inside, and eventually stress ourselves out into a whole bunch of relationship and health problems. What if we could let go of the past like children do? Maybe then we could laugh more and learn to live in the moment.

It’s adorable to see a boy building a sand castle or a girl running around in a princess dress. When I was younger my imagination ran wild. Tree leaves were my currency while water and dirt were my secret ingredients to culinary masterpieces. Everything I touched could be transformed into something new. Unfortunately imagination is often considered obsolete in the grown-up world. We become more practical and skeptical as we grow older. Why should we? Research shows that most people that make it onto the Forbes List allow themselves to use their imagination and creativity on a daily basis. Moreover, world’s giants, like Pixar Animation and Apple, rank creativity among the top five mandatory characteristics of their company culture. If creativity drives large corporations and puts small start-ups on the Forbes List, why can’t it enrich your life? Whether you dare to try a small DIY project or a major garage remodel, let your imagination flow and see what happens.
There are few questions that confuse adults more than question about their age. Now, try asking children how old they are. They won’t hold back the answer even for a second! When we are young it feels like we are going to live forever. As time goes by, it becomes our limitation. We often hear something like “I’m too old for this” used as an excuse for something. The truth is, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but rather by the moments that take our breath away. Remember that thing you’ve always wanted to try but never got to do? Well, try it! Sign up for dance class or learn to scuba dive, try sky diving or buy a guitar. Stop making excuses! Start living your life!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST Don’t be afraid to show your emotions like children do. When you see someone you’ve missed –give then a full-blown hug, when you are happy about something – share ayour smile with a stranger, when you are feeling sad – pour your heart out to a friend. Here are some basic facts and myths about corporate careers versus the private sector. We hope this helps you find your calling.
The opening scene of the iconic Matrix trilogy features Neo, the main hero, being forced to choose between the two pills – a white one or a red one. The kind of pill he takes determines the rest of life. In a way, our career choice is similar to this pill. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, an average adult
between the age of 18 and 67 spends about 16% of their waking hours at leisure, 7.5% with friends and family, and over 55% of time for work-related activities. What we do for a living affects everything, from the way we spend our time, the people we surround ourselves with, and the kind of life style we can afford. There
are two major occupation fields you get to choose from when it comes to your career – should you climb a corporate ladder or should you build your own business. The choice you make is life changing as it is almost impossible to alternate once it is set. We decided to explore the pros and cons of these two areas.
CORPORATE CAREER Corporate jobs come with a corner office on the upper floor of a glass skyscraper overlooking the downtown skyline. You get to work with a team of sharply dressed people who bring donuts and coffee to work and share jokes by the water cooler. Corporations gives you a sense of belonging and an opportunity to become an imperative part of a bigger vision. It involves business trips to exciting places with nothing less than first-class airfare and four-star hotel accommodations. Being smart, bright, and qualified is not enough to get you in a corner office with a view. You have to work your way to the top, competing with hundreds of other bright and qualified co-workers eager to pass you by as they race up the corporate ladder. For example, graduates of economics universities who join large financial institutions have to work 100 hours per week for the first four years. As such, you put yourself through school and take on student debt just to end up spending the first few years of your career in the office making sure you don’t get knocked off track by more determined office clerks.

VERTICAL CLIMB
Corporate careers require a good education and great time commitment. As such, after five to seven years in college, young professional graduates with thousands of dollars in student loans and find themselves working morning to night locked in a cubicle. Entry level positions also don’t guarantee high job satisfaction as they make people feel like small fractions of a huge machine designed to produce money for the shareholders. Stability is the biggest factor that plays in favor of working for a big corporation. You can rest assure that your paycheck will arrive on time, your sick leave will be paid, and your health insurance will be covered. The perspective for career growth is also a plus. Most corporation provide great opportunities for advancement and professional development. You also get exposed to a diverse workspace where you can learn from other professionals in your field. Corporation allows you to gain knowledge and experience which elevate your expertise and boost your resume.
Corporate career is great for those who seek stability and are good at following directions. It comes with a precise job description, a guaranteed paycheck, and a 50

However, the latest poll conducted by the New York Enterprise reports that the majority of business owners work at least 50 hours a week with twenty five percent of them putting in more than 60 hours a week. Small business requires constant attention which puts entrepreneurs at risk of being plugged into work 24/7.

Elmira Abraamyan graduated from dental school in the postSoviet Republic in the midst of 1990’s. Today, almost 20 years later, she heads one of the leading dental practices in the Sacramento region. This year she is the recipients of the Woman of the Year Award in the RussianSpeaking Community. Here is the story of this fascinating person that managed to become successful in a pretty engaging and saturated field while being a mother, a wife, and an immigrant.
How did you get You could say I had no other choice. What else started with your could a child of two doctors do but follow in dental career? their footsteps and go to medical school? My
mother was an endocrinologist and my father was a neurologist. I was extremely curious about what they did for a living when I was a child. As I was growing up I found myself spending more and more time in their offices. At some point I realized that I was fascinated by their skills and my career goal was set.

What My husband and I opened a new practice happened right after I got my certification. We next? started small, a modest dental office in

It was around that time when I met an interesting young man on my trip to Moscow who was also a doctor. We fell in love and got married shortly thereafter. Soon we will be celebrating our 35 year wedding anniversary.
35 years together! How did you manage to do this?
I wouldn’t have it any other way. We’ve always been there for each other no matter what. We tried to do everything together, sharing our load, helping each other, inspiring each other, supporting each other. I know I can lean on him when life takes a toll on me and I need a break. I am blessed to have a man like him next to me.
So, how did two young doctors from Uzbekistan end up in sunny California?
It’s no secret that everyone was looking for a way out of the falling Soviet Union in the late 1980’s. We weren’t an exception. We left Uzbekistan and headed toward the US. We took the long way, immigrating through Europe and eventually wound up in Los Angeles.
LA. We did a good job and our customers were happy. I was a treating patients while my husband was overseeing the business aspect of our practice. We pretty much stick to the same roles to this day. Yes. We now have two sons and both

planning to become a dentist. He spends a lot of his free time in clinics, shadowing me and watching me work. I can’t wait for him to get his degree and join our practice!
Your practice expanded as well. Is this correct?
Yes. We now have three dental offices through the greater Sacramento Region: the Sunrise Family Dentistry in Roseville, the Universal Dental Care in North Highlands, and our newest addition – the Madison Sunrise Dental Care.
You are a hard worker, but what is that you like doing in your free time?
I am passionate about two things, reading and traveling. My perfect getaway combines both. I’ve been to pretty amazing places and read even more amazing books and know there is so much more to cover! KIDS’ HEARTS Truly remarkable outcomes are possible in a classroom where trust, respect, and caring relationships flourish.
C
ommunity Outreach Academy (COA) is implementing Capturing Kids’ Hearts school wide. COA’s goal is to build meaningful relationships with students, provide a safe environment in which to learn, and develop a dialogue for team-building. This, in turn, paves the way for students to be able to use the skills they’ve learned—with confidence and enthusiasm. One of the first things you notice when you walk through the Community Outreach Academy campus is students and teachers shaking hands. Every student is greeted at the classroom entrance with

a welcome handshake by their teacher. Not only is COA teaching students how to shake hands in preparation for the professional world, but every student is positively recognized by their teacher on a daily basis. Students are beginning to very naturally use this skill as they introduce themselves to new students or someone they don’t know in their classrooms. They will have perfected a professional handshake when they arrive at their first job interview. Once in a classroom, you will observe Social Contracts on every wall. A Social Contract is an agreement on behavior between the students and the teacher. Through a
structured conversation, students create their Social Contract with one another and their teacher. It is signed by all students and referred to frequently by teachers. It truly is a living document that is the foundation for each classroom. COA’s goal is to create selfmanaging classrooms where students help one another to honor their Social Contract. Shaking hands, sharing “good things” every morning, empowering students, sending students home with a positive attitude are just a few of many things the COA community does to build relationships between staff and students and to capture each child’s heart!
