I was having lunch with a now good friend of mine, the co-owner of the Sacramento Kings, John Kehriotis, at a Russian restaurant. Even before we met, I had long admired John for his brilliant mind and his progressive business vision. He was by far one of the most respectable entrepreneurs I knew of, so I was delighted to have this opportunity to talk to him.

LISTEN ANYTHING YOU TO GAIN MAY SAY YOU WISDOM . ALREADY KNOW. John C. Maxwell
A
bowl of Ukrainian Borsch later and John began to talk. He was a great speaker and I truly enjoyed listening to his success stories, laughing about lessons he had learned the hard way, and getting his insight on world travel and Russian food. I listened without interrupting. Two hours later a calendar alert on John’s iPhone reminded me that it was time to go. I picked up the tab, loaded my friend with some hot Piroshkies to go, and we headed back to our cars. Our conversation left me with a mixed feeling of satisfaction and anxiety.
I was glad I got two hours’ worth of priceless insight from one of the greatest business minds I knew. At the same time, I was a little worried that John had found me the most boring companion ever since I had hardly said anything during our meeting. However, the farewell phrase he dropped while getting into his Mercedes caught me by surprise: “Thank you for lunch, Sergey. I truly enjoyed talking to you. You are a very interesting person.” Sometimes being an interesting companion means listening rather than speaking. John Maxwell put it this way, “Listening is the way to gain

wisdom because everything you say, you already know.” We can get smarter, wiser, and savvier simply by taking time to listen to someone who knows more than we do. Whether it’s talking to an interesting person, enjoying a good book, or reading an engaging story in a magazine, listening is great way to enhance your life. Our editorial team did a great job making this issue worth your time. It features stories and advice from field experts worth listening to. It also brings you some fresh insight on travel, food, relationships, health, success, and some pretty amazing people. Enjoy!

The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant that offers a unique dining experience and a menu that stretches far beyond chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Simply imagine yourself sitting next to your date in a private booth softly illuminated by dimmed, intimate lighting. Your server starts your dinner with a hot pot of melted cheddar cheese and a tray of artisan bread, seafood, meat or a vegetarian selection. Dinner at The Melting Pot is a mix of romance, entertainment, and some darn good food. You get to experience an interactive dining atmosphere and watch your food being cooked fondue style right at your table. Here, you are never in a rush. A full course dinner takes anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours, depending on your menu selection. It creates a perfect environment to enjoy time with your date while dipping something sweet or savory into a hot fondue pot.

Jewelry
Speaking of gems, you can’t go wrong with diamonds or gold, and luckily they come in all shapes and prices. Even these glamorous gifts can fit any budget, from $69 “starving student” valentine’s pendants to expensive rings that can be passed down for generations.
If you want to surprise your date with something more lasting than chocolates and are searching for a present that will leave them in awe, jewelry is the perfect choice.
The key to getting good quality without spending a fortune is as simple as buying it from the right place. Notorious jewelry giants at large shopping malls often overprice their inventory so they can sell it to you at 50% off. Besides, unless you are a diamond expert, it’s hard to tell the difference between a good quality diamond and a cheaper stone. To get your money’s worth, find a jeweler you can trust. We recommend a local, privately owned store called Jonathan K Jewelry. The company provides personal service and high quality jewelry at wholesale prices. Movies
Unless your date is a middle school teenager, going to a neighborhood Regency Theater will not make their heart beat faster. However, there are two great ways to put a spin on a regular movie night.
Go old school and watch a movie at a drive-in theater before those are gone forever, or combine a dinner and a movie by checking out a brand new fusion of a restaurant and theaters called Studio Movie Grill. There are three drive-in theaters still up and running in Northern Cal, one in Concord, San Jose, and Sacramento. Picture yourself watching a new hit on a big screen while cuddling with your date in the comfort of your own car. As for the fusion theaters, those allow you to enjoy some good food without having to smuggle it into the theaters. It’s a full service restaurant where you get to watch a movie while eating your dinner. There are two locations open in California, one in Rocklin and one in Simi Valley near Santa Barbara.

It also provides students with a great body of knowledge and some lifelong friendships. The competition to become a part of such an elite academic community is incredibly high. This did not stop Masha from applying to UC Berkeley, one of the most expensive public colleges in the nation. A great GPA got Masha in, but it was up to her to keep up with the program and cover the college costs. Masha applied for financial aid and scholarships and worked two jobs to make it through school. “I was doing research at the Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute for four years and working in the Slavic Exchange Department at the University,” says Masha. She started out as an Integrated Biology Major but after taking some Russian Literature Courses she fell in love with reading and writing and graduated with a double major, Integrative Biology and Russian Language and Literature. “Getting a degree from UC Berkeley was one of the hardest things I have done in my life. At the same time, being a Berkeley student taught me discipline and time management, and I now have a degree that looks great on my resume.”

LIFE LESSONS in CHINA by Juliet Werden
If you’re an adventurous person, born eager to travel the world and experience cultures, then you’re just like me. I had vacationed in Japan, Israel, even Cambodia. Never for more than a month. Now my husband and I were going to live in China for two years to teach English.
on the photos clockwise: 1. The long icy stairs of the Great Wall in winter. A lot of falling down occurred. 2. Me in an old-fashioned part of Guangzhou. Here you could transport yourself to a pre-Westernized China. 3. Stone statues of Buddhist monks at a temple. I like the variety of expressions, from disapproving to mischievous. 4. Girls dressed up in costumes at the park. Looks like it was just for fun. 5. My husband looking out over Ji Xie mountain. We loved traveling to beautiful places.

DO
DON’T
TRY NEW FOODS
STALL IN THE LANGUAGE
When you arrive in a new country, you’re excited to try the cuisine. As time goes on, you long for the foods you can only get at home. My husband and I talked about our favorite Mexican restaurants as if they were beloved family members. Once I found a store that sold American foods, I bought our groceries there. This works for an occasional treat, but don’t make it your main way of eating. Trying to recreate your native culture while living in another is an opportunity wasted. No doubt you will find some foods you never wanted near your tongue. Try them anyway. We ate crickets, cobra, and calf’s foot while in China. If anything, it makes a great story to impress -and gross out- friends.
My husband and I came to China knowing ‘nihao’ and nothing else. After two years, we could only count to ten. Our friends helped us with anything else, so we didn’t push ourselves beyond “survivor Mandarin”. Now I wish we had taken classes or hired a tutor. Everyone knows how difficult studying languages are without native speakers and opportunities to use it in real life. You’ll never have a better chance to become fluent than in the country that uses it.
EXPLORE NATURE
Not knowing much about the country beyond our favorite foods to order from take out, we ended up getting quite a shock. Looking back on it now, I have pleasant memories and some regrets. If you find yourself moving to a different country as a couple, here are some of my tips.
You can’t get a feel for a country until you’ve seen outside city walls. Apartment buildings and convenience stores look the same everywhere. The gray streets I walked down everyday weren’t the real China. It was in the thin black trees next to a snow covered Great Wall, the intense lime green of bamboo forests, and the wooden temples with stone statues and clouds of incense. Nature helped connect me to the people and their country. Seek out the places you can’t find anywhere else.
CELEBRATE! Hardly any Chinese holidays were similar to ours. Dragon boats raced down rivers in summer and everyone shared thick, sweet moon cakes in autumn. Even Christmas and New Years were different. Enjoy it. Engage in their traditions and share your own. For Thanksgiving, we roasted a turkey in a toaster oven for our work friends- they loved it!
GET OFFENDED In America, we don’t mention negative things to our friends. Amongst females, if one asks if her outfit is okay, the answer should always be a resounding yes. In China, women freely tell each other if they are getting too fat. I was shocked when one told me that my nose is “tall”, but eventually I understood this cultural practice. Chinese people are polite to strangers and honest with friends and family. This was their sign of my truly becoming their friend. Every culture comes with its own ways of interacting with each other. Learn these quickly and your transition will go smoother.
RELY ONLY ON EACH OTHER My husband and I spent a lot of time in our apartment. By tucking ourselves away at home, we could block out the strangeness of a foreign land. As a couple, it’s easy to be satisfied with just each other’s company, but this limits you and the people of the country. Most are interested in foreigners and finding out all of the differences between us. Our co-workers eagerly invited us to lunch, dinner, and trips to karaoke. They understood that, as so few non-Chinese people live there, we felt like fish out of water. Americans may not be as aware of foreigners feeling this way because there are so many here. All they need is for you to ask for help.

5 FunThings to Do in
by Olga Ivannikov
Although the season is almost over, the snow might stay around as late as March or April, which means you still have a chance to experience the best of the cold in Tahoe. If you are looking for more adrenaline with less risk you should try snowmobiling. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM
After five dry years the Sierras finally got some amazing snowfall, which made Lake Tahoe a Must Go destination over the holidays.
Snowmobiling Snowmobiling is a unique combination of speed, adventure and unforgettable scenery. Best of all? No experience is necessary and you can even share a ride by getting a double-rider touring machine. Priceless!
There are plenty of companies that offer snowmobile rentals by the hour in Tahoe. Most of them charge an arm and a leg for riding a snowmobile in a sardine-sized circle on flat grounds. Not much fun. Our research landed us at the Zephyr Cove Snowmobile center, a rental company known to be one of the largest in the states. Their fleet features over 90 newest Yamaha and Ski-Doo snowmobiles that are incredibly powerful, comfortable, easy to navigate, and most importantly, safe to ride. There is also no need to bring any snow gear. Snow boots, jackets, gloves, and open faced helmets are available for rent at the location.

Once fully equipped, you are taken up the mountains on a 20 minute bus ride. The shuttle drops you off at the starting point stationed approximately 7,000 above sea level. There, you are briefed on how to use the vehicle, assigned a guide, and unleashed into the wilderness on your own snowmobile. You get to discover the virgin beauty of a winter wonderland riding over 45 miles of perfectly groomed trails. Once you climb another 2,000 feet, the snow covered aspens and pine trees make room for an open terrace that overlooks Lake Tahoe from the top. The silver shimmering lake lays at your fingertips surrounded by towering mountain peaks covered with snow. It’s a breathtaking RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
view that makes you feel like you are standing on top of the world, an unforgettable experience!
Experienced tour guides will make sure you ride in confidence and comfort. Double-riders can switch during the tour so if two people ride, both get a chance behind the wheel. The tours vary in intensity and range from slow-paced rides for parents with children, to extremes for those who love speed and are looking for an adrenaline rush. Romantics and adventurists will love moonlight tours offered after dark. The snowmobile center is located on HWY 50 at the Zephyr Cove Lodge. Prior reservations are highly recommended. What can be a better way to start your day than with a perfect up of coffee and a breakfast plate worth getting out of bed for? If you are in South Lake Tahoe for a day, you might want to give Starbucks and IHOP a break and try a local favorite breakfast spot called A Cup of Cherries.
A Cup of Cherries 3434 Lake Tahoe Blvd South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 (530) 454-5111
It’s a family owned café that serves some amazing coffee drinks and a unique breakfast menu you won’t be able to find anywhere else. This place popped on the radar of local coffee fanatics because of the incredibly smooth, balanced, and kicking espresso drinks they serve. Their Island Lattes, Mexican Mochas, cappuccinos, and freshly brewed coffees got the café lots of faithful regulars.

The Omelette Quesadilla was perfect for taking with us on a five hour cross-country skiing tour. All items are cooked from scratch using fresh local ingredients with no pre-made boxed batter mixtures, shortenings, lard or margarine used in cooking. Adolfo, being a huge coffee fanatic himself, personally selects the coffee blends they buy form a local coffee roasters company. This, and lots of love the owners put into their coffee house, just might be the reason why A Cup of Cherries gets a line of regulars every morning.

Pork chops with pistachio cranberry chutney and seared Idaho trout
Dinner A few hours out in the snow and it feels like you are ready to swallow a cow. There is nothing better than grabbing a good meal after you spend a day in a freezing cold. Our recommendation for a dinner restaurant is conveniently located in the same place as the snowmobile rentals.

It is called the Restaurant at the Lodge and it feels like a real log cabin lost in the woods. Decorated with wooden logs, hardwood floors, and a huge burning fireplace, the restaurant creates a perfect ambiance for cozy romantic dining. The menu is made of popular items but there is nothing simple about the way they are prepared or served.

The trout also deserves a mention, with its perfectly seared, white flaky meat served over a bed of wild mushroom risotto and Sauvignon Blanc creamy white sauce. It was so good we cleaned the plate. And just when we thought we were stuffed, they served the dessert. It was a warm cobbler made from fresh apples, pears, and blueberries, topped with a scoop of melting vanilla ice cream and finished with a hint of Grand Marnier liquor. FOUR PROMINENT MEMBERS OF
An estimated 1.5 million Armenian Americans call the United States their home with the majority residing in California. Some of them, including the 35th Governor of California, George Deukmejian, have left a mark in American history.
ARMENIAN COMMUNITY IN CALIFORNIA
The Armenian community has lots of prominent musicians, writers, filmmakers, singers, scientists, and entrepreneurs. We wish to introduce you to four prominent Californians of Armenian descent that have achieved great heights in their respective fields of medicine, politics, sports, and music.
Did you know that most Armenians have no trouble speaking at least three languages, such as Armenian, English, and Russian, despite the fact that all those belong to completely different language families. This incredibly talented and resourceful nation is famous for its hospitality and known to have some of the best food traditions in the former Soviet Union. If someday you get to visit an Armenian family, get ready to eat, a lot. Unexpectedly a lot! Centuries ago Armenia was a powerful empire, stretching from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean. The nation took a great loss during a tragic Genocide of 1915, when an estimated 800,000 to 1.5 million Armenians were killed. The tragedy made millions of Armenians leave their homeland and spread all over the world. Today there are about 2 million Armenians in Armenia and about 8 million living all over the world, including the largest communities in the United States, Russia, France, Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. MEDICINE
SERGEY MAHTESYAN, DDS FINE TOUCH DENTAL Dr. Sergey Mahtesyan, a General Dentist with a wide scope of practice in Oral Surgery, is regarded as one of the best specialists in the field in Sacramento. He heads a rapidly expanding dental practice and constantly works on advancing the procedures he offers. He attrobutes a big part of his success to inspiration and help from his fellow members of the Armenian American community.
“IT’S A THING OF GREAT PRIDE TO BE OF ARMENIAN HERITAGE.” “Many oral surgery procedures and techniques used today were invented by a fellow Armenian, Dr. Varazdat Kazanjian, a graduate of Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is regarded as the father of modern maxillofacial and plastic surgery. It’s a thing of great pride for me to be a part of a nation that has given to the world numerous exceptional people like Dr. Kazanjian.“

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
Dr. Mahtesyan graduated from Yerevan State Medical University, Faculty of Dentistry and Oral Medicine, at the age of 21. He soon moved to the US and had to face many hardships of being an immigrant. “I went through it all, a tough immigration process to become a US citizen, odd jobs, you name it,” recalls Sergey. His goal was to practice his profession in the US, which meant going through Dental School all over again. He started in NYU College of Dentistry and later transferred to University of Colorado, Denver School of Dental Medicine, from which he graduated with an honorary award for Excellence in Oral Surgery. Dr. Mahtesyan practiced in Boston and Los Angeles before starting his practice in Sacramento. The focus of the practice is difficult full mouth reconstruction cases, which are handeled with relative ease using the latest dental technologies. What really sets Dr. Mahtesyan and his practice apart, is a procedure called all-on-4-teeth in a day, which was invented by Portuguese dentist Paulo Malo. It allows edentoulous patients to get a full set of non-removable teeth anchored on 4 implants in a single day. Dr. Mahtesyan was trained to perform the procedure by Dr. Paulo Malo himself in Lisbon, Portugal. “It’s like miracle to be able to give a patient a full arch of teeth in one procedure. It changes the patient’s life in a single day.”

KATCHO ACHADJIAN MEMBER OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY Katcho Achadjian represents the 35th Assembly District in the California State Legislature, which includes the communities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria.
“AMERICANS AND ARMENIANS HAVE LOTS OF SHARED VALUES.” In 1971, Katcho came to California to complete his education. Civil War that broke out in Lebanon at the time prevented Katcho from going back home. He stayed in the US, graduated from college, and pursued the American Dream.
“I have always been attracted to Western education and civilization,” said Mr. Achadjian, “In fact, I was very proud of the United States as I watched Apollo 11 and its crew landing on the moon. I was blessed with a chance to come to the states to receive a quality education. I accomplished my goal when I graduated from Cal Poly in June of 1976. At that time, Civil War was ravaging Lebanon. Going home was not an option for me.” So Katcho decided to stay in the US. He worked at a gas station to put himself through college. Upon graduation, he bought out that very gas station by getting a small business loan. A few years later, he got married to his wife Araxie, also an immigrant from Lebanon. Today, after 45 years of living in the US, Mr. Achadjian represents the people of the Central Coast as both a County Supervisor and a State Assembly Member. Katcho and Araxie, are striving to keep Armenian traditions alive in their family. Their son, Hratch, and daughter, Nyri, both speak Armenian and have traveled to Armenia before. The Achadjians are proud of their heritage and preserve their traditions through the following three pillars: food, church and family. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
A TRIBUTE TO ARMENIAN CULTURE “We strive to keep our Armenian traditions alive in our family. Our daily dishes, our three hour drives to the nearest Armenian Church to celebrate Easter, and the fact that my sisters and I have all settled close to each other all help to preserve our heritage. This is part of the beauty of America. We have the freedom to celebrate our roots.”

BORSCH by Oksana Antonenko
A culinary business card of the Slavic cuisine is borsch. There is a perfect reason for it.
model: Esfir Renchkovskaya 路 photo by: Igor Ilyenko | www.coolstyle.us
H
ealthy nutritious meal, rich taste, vibrant red color and enticing aroma make borsch an unrivalled winner for many people! Due to the perfect ratio of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, borsch is highly nutritious and beneficial for the digestive system.
The vegetables and legumes in borsch (beets, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, sweet peppers, and beans) are full of vitamins and provide fiber, iron, carotene, lycopene, potassium, and other elements of healthy diet. The broth in borsch is both comforting and good for digestion. Despite (or, perhaps,
because) of its long history, borsch can be quite customizable to satisfy different palates. Some like it with meat or beans, some add sour cream, others top it off with croutons, and there are others who like it plain. Every family seems to have its own signature recipe. Here is one of our own favorite borsch recipes for you to enjoy.
Borsch is as time-consuming as it is delicious. The good news is that borsch can be enjoyed for several days, since its taste only improves after a day or two.

WHY YOU CAN’T GET IN SHAPE
a o re s ns ABOUT THE MODEL: Marissa Honrada lost over 40 pounds over the past 18 months after enrolling with Custom Fitness. Marrisa feels better than ever and finds more energy for her everyday activities. She hopes her example can inspire you to get in the best shape of your life!

by Hugo Brambila
YOU CAN’T GET STARTED You’ve been sitting on the fence forever. You know you want to get in shape, but you’re not sure where to start. You are lost among a gazillion of fitness offers and healthy eating trends. Stop waiting for a sign from heaven. Health will never happen to you unless you MAKE IT HAPPEN! It doesn’t matter where you start, as long as you do. Jump off that fence, stop thinking, just do it!
YOU’RE TURNED OFF BY FALSE PROMISES You are smart enough to know that marketing pitches like “flatten your tummy in 5 minutes a day,” or “sculpt your butt while sitting still” are meant to drive sales, not get you in shape. When I give orientations to new clients at my studio I don’t promise them a walk in the park. I am being honest about the fact that fitness takes an effort. At the same time I guarantee that my instructors will be there for them every step of the way, guiding and encouraging. Don’t get discouraged by the false promises. Find a program that sounds legit and try it out!
YOU’VE RAISED YOUR BAR TOO HIGH You finally made it to the gym and now feel intimidated by the Mr. Muscle who’s pumping iron in the weights room and Ms. Perfect who’s finishing a half-marathon on the treadmill. Relax. It’s OK if you can’t keep up with the overachievers in the front row of your group fitness classes. No one expects you to perform or look like an athlete when you first walk into a gym. Focus on what you can do NOW. Don’t quit. Just do the best you can and allow your body to catch-up. You’ll be surprised how far you’ll come.
YOU DON’T ENJOY THE MOVEMENT It’s good to keep your eye on the prize, but it’s easy to burn out if you’re rushing to your fitness goals. De-emphasize the “work” in “working out”. Slow down, learn to take pleasure in movement. Scientists have proved that exercise has a great mood enhancement effect. It makes your body release special hormones called endorphins, which make you feel happy. Most of my clients prove this statement to be true. They see movement as play, fun, and release. This makes them look forward to their workouts and helps them maintain a stable exercise schedule.
YOU CAN’T DIVE BELOW THE SURFACE You know a lot about health and nutrition, but you still can’t seem to lose weight. You have to admit, that no matter how smart you are, if you’re not living it, you don’t really know it. Being savvy about health and trying new diets can lead to some fleeing changes on the scale, but true secret to losing weight and maintaining a good health is practice and consistency. That’s where nutrition coaches come in. Get someone to breathe down your neck and motivate you to eat and live better. This is how I hold my Custom Fitness clients accountable and help them make healthy choices their habit.
YOU GET FRUSTRATED AND QUIT Be aware that progress is not a straight line. If you are gauging success on how much you weigh each morning, you are bound to give up before you can establish healthy habits or see real change. Most of my clients’ charts look like twisted lines of progress, regress, more progress, and lessons learned along the way. A year later, dozens of pounds lost – for good. Worth the roller coaster ride, for sure.

This family-owned restaurant originated 26 years ago in this very location and managed to thrive over the years. The menu features traditional family recipes passed down the owners’ family tree for generations. Restaurant staff of 25 members has some cooks that have been working at Famous Kabob for 18 to 20 years. The restaurant fits up to 90 people and can easily accommodate private and corporate parties.
This place is a paradise for those who appreciate fine meat done right.
Recently I had an amazing opportunity to try Persian cuisine at the Famous Kabob restaurant located at the crossing of Hurley Way and Fulton Avenue in Sacramento. The place looked nothing fancy from the outside, but the mouthwatering smell of grilled meat lured me to step in. I was taken by surprise by the upscale ambience of this neighborhood food joint. It had cozy booths and tables set up around a real tandoori oven. The air was filled with the irresistible smell of freshly baked bread. Deemed light from a beautiful oversized chandelier illuminated the elegant European wall texture and created a perfect atmosphere for a relaxed intimate dining.
A friendly host offered me a table and served some complimentary house bread with fresh herbs and feta cheese. He suggested to start with their famous appetizer – a fancy sautéed eggplant and tomato spread topped with a hint of mint and yogurt. It paired perfectly with the tandoori flatbread. The main course selection was a puzzle. I got lost in a long list of fresh kabobs and a large variety of meat dishes. The menu offered a great choice of grilled beef, lamb, chicken and vegetable kabobs and featured some unique Persianstyle stews. All dishes are served with a side of Basmati rice topped with saffron seasoning and grilled tomatoes. I tried several dishes and
my absolute favorite was their Lamb Kabob. It had marinated cubes of lamb tenderloin grilled on a skewer with fresh onions and bell peppers. The meat was juicy and tender and the flavors came together perfectly.
Famous Kabob Restaurant 1290 Fulton Ave #1219 Sacramento, CA 95825 916-483-1700 www.famouskabob.com
Another dish that deserves a mention was Gormeh Sabzee, a Persian stew. It was made of beef cuts sautéed with finely chopped fresh parsley, leeks, scallions, onions, a variety of herbs and spices and garnished with kidney beans and sun dried lime. According to the coowner, Max Babaei, this stew takes four to five hours to prepare and cook. I found this dish to be the best remedy for those craving some hearty comfort food on a rainy day. MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE
Pita Kitchen Plus is a small Mediterranean joint that has become famous among the local foodies since it has first opened in June of 2009.
Teremok is one of the best kept secrets of the local Slavic community in Sacramento. This established Russian grocery store is hidden in a small courtyard on the intersection of Auburn Boulevard and Hemlock Street in Sacramento. It is one of the favorite grocery stops for all those who cherish Slavic culinary food traditions. Teremok carries a great number of quality Slavic groceries including authentic European imports, traditional canned items, fresh produce from local farms, and a great selection of sausages, cheeses, and poultry. Teremok also offers a true spoiler for those with a sweet tooth. The store sells freshly baked goods, bulk sweets and chocolates, and European cakes and pastries. Their cafe offers freshly grilled kabobs, Uzbek pilov, smoked sausages and meats, hot Piroshkies and freshlymade salads along with other Slavic favorite delicacies. All items are prepared from scratch according to traditional Slavic recipes. The cafe attracts lots of American customers interested in trying authentic Russian or Ukrainian food as well as Slavic regulars who stop by for a quick dinner take-out. 5519 Hemlock St Sacramento, CA 95841 916-334-4001
The place offers a fresh and healthy alternative to typical greasy burgers with fries. Pita Kitchen serves the best Mediterranean cuisine prepared from scratch at the location according to the family recipes of executive Chef and restaurant owner Hosam Khalifeh. Not only is Mediterranean cuisine is good for you, it is also full of flavor and diversity. Pita’s menu ranges from authentic vegetarian aentrees to freshly grilled kabobs prepared in special house marinades. Restaurant’s ‘must have’ menu item is probably the Pita Kitchen Special Entrée – grilled marinated tender pieces of lamb, chicken, beef and kifta served with wild rice, salad, and their freshly baked pita bread. If you are willing to stretch beyond the ordinary fast food and give Pita’s healthy alternatives a try – you just might become a regular at this authentic Mediterranean eatery.
