It happened several years ago during a family vacation to the Yosemite National Park. We decided to take a hike to the top of Nevada Falls. For some reason I decided that my five year old daughter Nicky was old enough to take on this sixmile roundtrip with elevation of almost 6,000 feet. She proved me wrong half way up the trail when she stopped, clammed her little hands around my neck, and refused to take another step.

At first carrying her did not seem to be a big deal, but after 45 minutes of climbing steep slopes, I realized that I needed to find a way to get her off my back. “Baby, would you like to see a bear?” I asked. “You know, there is a little bear living in the woods. If we walk fast enough, we might see it before it gets dark.” Her eyes got wide open. She took the bait. Nicky jumped off, and ran in front of me for the rest of the hike, all the way to the top of the falls, and then all the way back to the trailhead in the valley. By the end of the day she could barely drag her little feet, but with her hopes of seeing a little bear just around the next corner, she kept going strong. It was an incredible day. The view from the top of the falls was priceless. Tired, but excited, we got back to the Yosemite Village and crashed into the only pizza place that was still open. Hungry after a long and strenuous hike, I was so busy munching a piece of a pie that it took me a moment to notice that Nicky wasn’t eating. She was sitting quietly, staring at an untouched slice of pizza. “You lied to me,” she said when she caught my eyes. “There was no bear in the woods,” she said, and her eyes filled with tears. My heart skipped a beat and then sunk into my tired feet. My

incentive worked to get my baby girl to take on a great challenge, but at the same time it broke her trust in me. I put my plate away, took her by the hand, and went outside, looking for a way to redeem myself. All of a sudden, she pulled her hand out and yelled: “Papa look, there is our bear!” She was pointing at a little bear cub that was staring back at us from just a few feet away. Next thing I knew, she was chasing it through the parking lot while I was desperately trying to catch up with her, praying for the mama bear not to show up. It all ended well. The cub ran away, I was redeemed, and Nicky was absolutely satisfied. It’s been several year since then, but every time she sees a picture of Yosemite, she proudly points at the highest mountain and says, “I got up there all by myself when I was little, and I saw a real bear too.” I think she will remember that day over all the presents that we would ever be able to give her. Moments like this stay with us forever. I encourage you, too, to take time and make some memories with your loved ones this summer. This issue of Russian Time Magazine has lots of great advice on things to do and places to see, restaurants to try and facts to know. I hope it will help you find your next adventure and give you another story to share around a dinner table.

What are the travel destinations on your bucket list?

3 Family Weekend Getaways by Olga Ivannikov

Some of mine include Europe, China, South Africa, and France along with a few others. Unfortunately, for most people, having a day job and a family makes it hard to find time and resources for extended long distance trips. A recent survey performed by the world-wide digital platform YouGov Cube reports that 53% of Americans did not take a vacation at all last year. Luckily, if you live in California you can beat the odds without sacrificing much time or money. There are lots of local travel opportunities that can make you feel worlds away without even leaving the state. From the green highlands that resemble the Netherlands to the countryside vineyards that echo of France and the desert-like landscape that mirrors an African Safari, the Golden State has it all. Here are three weekend travel destinations that can brighten up this summer for your entire family! RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch The Flower Fields Ranch is an experience like no other. It provides a spectacular display of unbelievable colors stretching over fifty acres of rolling hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The fields come to life once a year for only six to eight weeks when tens of thousands of giant Ranunculus flowers begin to bloom. The flowers come in thirteen bright shades which form bursting patches of color and create an incredible view. A dozen of bright-colored antique tractors stroll through the property providing the guests with an opportunity to enjoy the view from an open-air wagon. Each year the fields draw over 160,000 visitors from all over the world. The fields are open till May 9 this year and will re-open on March 1, 2017. Make sure to plan ahead if you missed the blooming season. www.theflowerfields.com

Little Denmark of Santa Ynez Solvang is a historic Danish village hidden in the midst of the incredibly beautiful Santa Ynez Valley just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara. This small city known as “Little Denmark feels and looks a lot like Europe. Half-timbered houses built in Danish style are surrounded by shady sidewalks with lofty windmills popping up here and there. The streets are full of family-owned Danish bakeries selling house-made pastries, little gift shops, and authentic restaurants serving gourmet menus. You can stroll through the city on a horse-drawn trolley, a Segway, or by foot, checking out wine tasting rooms, cafes, and shops. www.solvangusa.com RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

SANTA ROSA

African Safari West The last thing you expect to find in the heart of California’s wine country is an African Safari. That’s why Safari West natural preserve is considered one of the best kept secrets of Sonoma County. Located near the city of Santa Rosa, the park covers over 400 acres of land that look and feel like a real Savannah. The preserve is home to over 900 wild exotic animals including giraffes, zebras, antelopes, gazelles, buffalos, oryx, and wildebeests. The animals move freely through the park creating a fascinating Savannah-like scenery. The park is so big that a ride-through tour in an open-air off-road vehicle takes almost three and a half hours to complete. Guests can get up-close and personal with wild animals such as giraffes and cheetahs. Safari west offers day tours and exotic overnight accommodations in luxurious fully equipped and furnished tents. You can come for a day or spend the night and fall asleep to the sounds of African wild life. The park is a great destination for families with children or a romantic getaway. www.safariwest.com RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE 22

A little over 10 years ago Blockbuster Video & Entertainment was a leading provider of home movies and video games. At its peak in 2004 the company employed nearly 60,000 people and operated over 9,000 stores. At that time no one paid much attention to an infamous new corporation called Redbox that launched four automated convenience kiosks to vend DVDs in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Seven years later Redbox became the largest DVD & video game provider, driving Blockbuster front stores out of business and leaving tens of hundreds of people unemployed. Technology and globalization rapidly change the labor market. Some of the jobs available today may become obsolete several years from now. Ukrainian Bacon Sandwich

MOST POPULAR RUSSIAN by Lika Emelyanova Mouthwatering, juicy corned beef Reubens and flavorful seafood Po’boys made a name for American sandwiches around the world.

Americans consume an average of 45 billion sandwiches each year which makes the sandwich one of the most traditional convenience foods in the US. Much like Americans, Russians also have a thing for this type of light meal. Russian sandwiches, however, are much less sophisticated than the loaded Chicken Bacon Ranch Melt or the Italian Chicken Panini we see at Subway or Panera Bread. A Russian sandwich is usually served open-faced style with a slice of bread topped with some incredibly filling

Others, like an inch-thick slice of ‘Salo’, a Ukrainian version of a rich, fatty bacon, served over some freshly baked white bread, should never be mentioned during an annual checkup appointment with your physician. Nonetheless, most Slavic sandwiches are great treats that can satisfy both your taste buds and hunger. Here is a line-up of the 25 most popular Russian sandwiches in all their glory.

Can

Social Media Affect Your Job Search?

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.

When it comes to a job interview, a first impression could be the difference between making or breaking it. “Your first impression isn’t made with a firm handshake anymore – it’s with a Google search,” says Dan Schawbel, the author of Me 2.0, a bestselling book on personal empowerment and career success. 32

YOUR VIRTUAL ID... A recent survey conducted by Jobvite.com, a large online recruiting platform, reveals that 93% of employers tend to screen job candidates through online search engines and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram before meeting with them for an interview.

The outcome of an interview does not entirely depend on a candidate’s online presence, but a shocking 55% of hiring managers admit, that information retrieved from online profiles can drastically affect the ultimate employment decision. These disturbing statistics prove that most of us underestimate the importance of our online presence when it comes to employment. Most HR departments go beyond traditional resumes, interview, and background checks when reviewing potential job candidates. Looking up applicants’ history online has become increasingly common. Social media profiles provide more than

enough supplemental information on a candidate’s values, ethics, and lifestyle. Most resumes are ridiculously similar and parade around the same buzz words such as an ‘amazing team player’ or a ‘self-motivated fast learner’, etc. Your social media profiles provide much more unique information about your personality. The type of photos you put up, the comments you leave, the posts you share, and the friends you have create a virtual identity that can be easily traced and evaluated by a potential employer. This information can be more revealing than all the cliché lip service you put on your resume. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

A good education and sufficient experience are not the only things an employer is looking for when hiring new personnel. A new recruit also has to be able to understand and share the corporate culture and fit in with the rest of the team. These factors play a major role on a new recruit’s long-term prospects with the company. For these reasons most job interviews incorporate lots of questions that help assess a candidate’s personality profile and evaluate the person’s ability to align with the company’s goals and values. While you can ace a job interview by being well prepared, your social media posts provide an unfiltered version of your personality. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

“I Hate Her Swimsuit!” A recent media scandal involved an employer who turned down a fully qualified job candidate because of the posts he saw on her Facebook page. Although the woman had successfully passed preliminary screening and an interview, the recruiter declined her application because she had “too many selfies and posts in bathing suits on her FB page.” According to a survey conducted by the CareerBuilder.com, 63% of HR managers acknowledged that they have previously disregarded job

This includes bad mouthing a previous employers, expressing aggressive political statements, posting provocative or inappropriate photographs, showing poor communication skills or using text message language or smile faces in written communication.

example of social media affecting one’s career. The scandal erupted in 2011 when Payne was asked to resign because the school has received an anonymous e-mail complaining about a photo she posted while traveling to Europe during a summer vacation. The photo showed Payne holding a glass of beer in one hand and a glass of wine in another. It remains unclear how the photo was obtained since Payne had a A shocking story of Ashley Payne, a high private profile with a high security level, school teacher from Georgia, who lost allowing access only to a small number her job because of a picture she posted of friends. Payne had filed a lawsuit to on her Facebook page, was another get her job back but lost.

Most recruiting companies respect the privacy of personal social media profiles such as Facebook and Instagram. Although your virtual identity may affect the image of your employer, it is not your photos that the recruiters are after when they look you up online. Some employers may check professional networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter, or Xing.com to verify the information applicants list on their resumes. Make sure that the facts displayed on your professional profiles correspond with your resume, including employment history, dates of employment, and past

job titles. Make sure that your profile looks and feels professional. A photo taken in a kitchen, at the gym, or (God forbid) at the beach, is not the best option for a profile picture on LinkedIn. Your hobbies and interests may also contribute to the overall impression you make on your employer. For instance, you may find a picture of yourself soaring on a snowboard on jet skis pretty awesome. Your boss may see it as a potential hazard with a high risk for you being injured, needing higher insurance premiums, and taking time off from work.

What does the Law Say? Social media is a relatively new phenomenon. Aside from professional networks such as LinkedIn, it was designed for personal use where one’s privacy should be respected. Is it even legal for employers, bosses, and hiring agents to poke their noses around one’s virtual 34

identity? The law around the use of online information is constantly changing. While companies have all the rights to consider information publicly posted on the web, they cannot base their employment decisions on assumptions obtained from the internet. The same

non-discrimination policies that guide a personal interview must be followed for online background checks. With this being sad, maintaining a good reputation online is the easiest way to stay on the safe side and make your virtual identity work for you, not against you.

5 FUN THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS THIS SUMMER by Lika Emelyanova

MANDATORY HIT THE BEACH

TOP SUGGESTIONS:

If you live in California you simply can’t make an excuse to skip a trip to the beach during summer. There is something special about chasing the waves, building a sand castle, or soaking up the sun, together with your kids. These simple pleasures never get old and make the best memories that can stick with your children for a lifetime. There is hardly another state that offers as many different coastline sceneries as California does. From the mysterious Nort Shore to the lush hills of the Central Coast and the sunny beaches of South Cal, there are plenty of destinations to choose from.

MEMORABLE GO CAMPING

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

CENTRAL COAST – Gibson Beach, Monterey County. The beach is located in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve just outside of Carmel and Monterey. The reserve offers some fascinating hiking trails with breathtaking ocean views. SOUTH CAL – Huntington Beach, this nine-mile long stretch of sand is perfect for surfing, body boarding, biking, or simply lying in the sun all day long.

POPULAR CAMPGROUNDS:

There is nothing that makes you step out of your comfort zone as much as a camping trip. It is an unconventional experience that makes you unplug from the world and connect with each other. For children, setting up a campsite, eating sausages off the grill, and making s’mores over an open campfire at night are unique experiences. This is the kind of adventure that every child should experience at least once with their parents.

42

NORTH SHORE – Van Damme State Park, Mendocino County. Try ocean kayaking, offered by many local companies, and explore sea caves and marine life.

LAKE TAHOE – Meeks Bay Campground is situated on the lake and is adjacent to a sandy beach with relatively warm water - a rarity in this otherwise cold lake. The campground offers great facilities and rentals. SANTA BARBARA - El Capitán State Beach Campground is located just 17 miles away from Santa Barbara. It is situated on a beautiful sandy beach with many campsites offering ocean views. YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK - White Wolf Campground is nestled in a pine forest at 8,000 feet and provides a fascinating view of the Yosemite high country.

Going somewhere warm for a family getaway is always a good idea. A Median Vacations lasts no longer than seven days, which then leaves you with five more weeks of summer to spare. Here are five great ideas on how to entertain children without taxing your brain or spending a fortune. These are fun, easy to implement, and are guaranteed to get your kids super excited!

Summer is here

which means your kids are out of school and are ready for you to come up with something exciting to do.

GEEKY DO A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT Get your kids excited about science with a DIY science experiment, done together. Children get thrilled when they are allowed to mix mystery ingredients and then watch different chemical reactions take place. DIY science experiments make children like science which in turn could help them do better at school. Not a science geek yourself? Don’t worry! You can find plenty of books and websites with easy step-by-step DIY experiments that require no special gear or expertise. www.sciencebob.com is our personal favorite. Here one easy DIY Science Experiment they recommend:

Adventurous GO DOWN THE RIVER Beat the summer heat by taking a boat down the river. Any boat. If you prefer more relaxing-type of fun choose a mellow and shallow part of the river and float down on an inflatable raft or tubes. If you like more energetic activities – rent a canoe or a kayak. Get a boat for two and pedal together with your kid or get two boats and have a little friendly family race. If you come from a family of daredevils, try whitewater rafting. This electrifying adventure equates to an extreme roller coaster ride on water.

FIZZ INFLATOR: WHAT TO DO Carefully pour the vinegar into the bottle. Loosen up the balloon by stretching it a few times and then use the funnel to fill it a bit more than half way with baking soda. Now carefully put the neck of the balloon all the way over the neck of the bottle without letting any baking soda into the bottle. Ready? Lift the balloon up so that the baking soda falls from the balloon into the bottle and mixes with the vinegar. Watch the fizz-inflator at work! HOW DOES IT WORK? The baking soda and the vinegar create an ACID-BASE reaction and the two chemicals work together to create a gas, (carbon dioxide) Gasses need a lot of room to spread out and the carbon dioxide starts to fill the bottle, and then moves into the balloon to inflate it.

YOU WILL NEED · One small empty plastic soda or water bottle · 1/2 cup of vinegar · Small balloon · Baking soda · Funnel or piece of paper

YOUR OPTIONS: WHITEWATER RAFTING – Try going down the south fork of American River, California’s most popular whitewater rafting destination. We recommend All Outdoors California Whitewater Rafting, a company that has been providing safe rafting trips for 50 years. CANOEING – spend a day canoeing down the Russian River with your family. Burke's Canoe Trips rent canoes that can fit two adults and one child plus a backpack full of food. TUBBING – if you wish to be on the safer side you may always go with tubing down the lazy river in a local water park.

HANDY

HOLD A CAR WASH All right, there is no cheaper way to thrill the kids. Pick a really hot day, have them put on their swim suits, give them a sponge and a bucket of bubbly soap water, and let them go wild while washing your car. Do you dare? Get a water hose and get in the game. Between splashing each other and getting soaked, your kids will have a blast and you will have a clean car. If you live in an apartment or have a water restriction in your city, look up the self-service car wash stations near you. A car wash party there will only cost you a handful of quarters. Make sure to bring plenty of towels. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

Is it possible to balance work and family for a modern man?

BUSINESS SOCCER PRACTICE FROM

TO

by Inna Pshichenko

Bringing home the bacon has long been considered a man’s main responsibility in a family. For years the role of a father has been equated with providing food and shelter.

www.diabetes.org

As a result, men often find themselves caught up in a race up the corporate ladder or consumed with the competitive needs of their own business. They invest themselves into their careers for the benefit of their families but end up missing dinner times, baseball games, and recitals. Is there a silver lining? Is it possible to balance work and family for a modern man? An influential corporate executive who represents one of the largest fast food chains in the world proves that a man can find middle ground between a career and a family. Clay Merrill is a communication manager at MOROCH, an innovative nationwide PR company that handles branding and marketing for McDonald’s Corporation and other brand names such as Walt Disney, FedEx, Coca-Cola, and Marvel Entertainment, to name a few. Clay oversees McDonald’s positioning on local markets, including participation in community events, supervision of media campaigns, and communication to individual franchise owners.

RAISING THE BAR TO FIGHT DIABETES Such a wide range of responsibilities involves lots of details, extended hours at work, and the pressure of staying on top of the constantly changing market place. Clay manages to succeed at all of the above and cares for a family of six on top of that. Clay and his wife Natalie are raising four beautiful children, Alisha (13), Dallin (9), Blake (4), and Chase (2). The kids are involved in extra curricular activities including dance, soccer, and music, and Clay makes it a priority to be there for them whether it’s a soccer game, a recital, or a talent show. How does a leader of the public relations effort for the McDonald’s franchise owners in the greater Sacramento and Reno areas find time to balance work and family? “It’s like anything else in life, anything that’s a priority of yours,” says Merrill. “If you just try to find the time you’re never going to make it. But if you make the time, then it’s there. I try to relate to my kids on their own level. I think with children, it’s just being there more than anything else.”

STOP DIABETES

The event has helped raise over $40 million for the American Diabetes Association since it’s inception in 2000. The association’s “education, research, and advocacy initiatives”—a fancy phrase for gathering supporters—help nearly 26 MILLION children and adults in the US.

American Diabetes Association acknowledges men like Clay to inspire others to strive for balance, as well as to raise funds to help Stop Diabetes. Every year the Association holds the Father of the Year Award, a dinner ceremony where several notable men are recognized for making family a priority, while balancing demanding careers and community involvement. The Award heightens the meaning of fatherhood while helping raise funds to fight Diabetes. Most honorees have significant career and community achievements, but the awards are never given out based on career-related accomplishments. The recipients should first of all be recognized as role models by their peers and families. “The Father of the Year recognition is not a competition,” says Laurie Williams, the marketing director for the American Diabetes Association. “We honor several fathers each year. Each of them is an outstanding individual recognized for his contribution to his family, profession, and community.” Merrill, himself, has been serving on the association’s community leadership board for about two years. He first

46

RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

came across the American Diabetes Association through his clients while on a quest to promote public health and smart eating habits. “To me it was astonishing to learn that more people in this country die from complications related to diabetes than those that die from cancer,” he recalls.

Since then Clay has been actively working with both the McDonald’s franchise owners and the American Diabetes Association to accomplish a twofold goal. First, they contribute to finding the cure for diabetes by furthering funds and awareness. Second, the alliance tries to provide a chance for people who struggle with the disease “to be able to live the way they want and make whatever adjustments they need in order to live a better life.” These changes may not be able to completely relieve America of diabetes, but if the other honorees of the Father of the Year Award are anything like Clay Merrill, the American Diabetes Association is definitely heading in the right direction, bringing us closer to a healthier America.
