THE BEST, THE BRIGHTEST, & THE LEAST EXPECTED
I
t was the Indian Summer in San Francisco. The last few sunny days before the cold ocean breeze would wrap the city by the bay in its cold embrace. I brought several members of my leadership team for a private boat tour to the Angel’s Island. At the dock we were introduced to the rest of the group – most of them in their late 20’s and early 30’s, coming from the Russian-speaking community of the Bay Area. To be honest with you, I was a bit surprised to see these young people invited to such an upscale tour. My curiosity finally won. “So,” I asked a young man standing next to me, “What is that you do for a living?” “Oh, I work with computers,” he replied. Of course! What else can kids do these day and age? “I am a Senior Quantitative Analyst at GOOGLE,” casually added my companion. The look on the face of my chief editor who was ear dropping next to us was priceless. I could tell she was stunned, and so was I. We could not believe that our Russian-speaking boys work at GOOGLE. As Senior Quantitative Analysts! At that moment I already knew what one of our next cover stories will be about. My editor was restless. She was asking around, looking whether there were others like our sudden companion from the boat. The results of her private investigation were quiet impressive – GOOGLE alone has several hundred employees that come from the Russian-speaking community. And so does Intel, and Twitter, and IBM. And so on. You get the point. We decided to introduce you to these brilliant minds. Not so much to what they do or how they do it. I doubt you’d be keen to learn about the quantitative analysis. But rather about the journey that yielded them a job with some of the largest Tech companies in the world. You can read more about these impressive achievers in our featured story called Top Tech Russians. Leading tech engineers is not the only surprise our team prepped for you in this issue. Our editorial on Russian women serving in American armed forces is just as impressive. We will also shed some light on how it feels to be in love with a Russian, or a Ukrainian, or an American. Get the insight on blended marriages in our story called Happily Blended.

ach woman has her own wish list, but I doubt that 4:45 am wake-up calls, strenuous exercise programs that push you to the limit both physically and mentally, a ban on anything pretty like make-up, music, and sweets make a wish list of any woman. Or so I thought, until I met these military girls. The Russian girls serving in the American armed forces. Why would any girl, let alone one born overseas, would ever give up make-up, fashion, and all the sassy little things that girls like to do? Why would a
young woman trade the comfort of her everyday life for weeks of excruciating training, long nights away from home, hard beds, and baggy uniforms? What could be an equal tradeoff for the risk of being drafted and tossed in the middle of a battle field? I asked these questions of two brave young women of Slavic heritage that pledged their allegiance and lives to protect and to serve the American flag and people. Our featured guests are Olena Leon who serves in the US Army, and Ella Zaremba, who trained with the US Air Force.

A pretty blond, the type you’d expect to find in a beauty shop flipping through the pages of a fashion magazine. But make no mistake, there is nothing sassy about this girl. Her golden-green eyes seem to shoot straight through you, pinning you down, reading you and captivating you at the same time. Olena Leon is a petite and young, and yet she radiates strength that seems to be shatterproof, the kind of strength you’d find a soldier, an American soldier. Olena is enrolled with the US Army and chose service to be her career path. She is now one of those people we salute with respect for their bravery and dedication. It was an interesting journey that started a long way from here that brought Olena to where she is today. Here is Olena’s story in her own words:

I
was born and raised in Astrakhane, Russia during the era of Soviet Union. My family moved to Crimea, Ukraine when I was two years old. And yes, it was Ukraine then, since in 1954 Nikita Khrushchev had given it to the Ukrainian SSR. In 1991, when I went to first grade, The USSR collapsed. Since then there were many ups and downs for my family. In the 1990’s in Ukraine were wild times for many. It was almost impossible to find a decent job. The wages were incredibly low. Those who tried to operate their own business, would live in constant fear that one day a group of tough guys with shaved-heads would show up and ask the owners to start paying a so called “roofing fee,” a monthly charge that would keep those shave-heads from flushing down the drain everything the owners had. My family lived in Sevastopol, in the area called Red Hill. It was a real hill in
the middle of town with mostly private houses. People had to battle with a constant lack of produce in grocery stores. One way of doing that was to grow your own fruits and vegetables, so most of the people had small gardens in their back yards. We had to plant our own fruit trees, tomatoes, and potatoes. People also raised chickens, goats, and even cows! It was like a small village in the middle of an urban town. There was barely any public transport going up that hill. I had to walk for about two miles every morning rain or shine just to catch a ride on the trolleybus to get to school. I remember in the winter time, after a heavy snowfall, my feet would be all wet and frozen by the time I would arrive at school. Going back home was the same route – walking up the hill. I guess, in a way, it was good for us, as we surely did a lot of walking. I was always into martial arts, so I did karate. RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
Later on I got into Muay Thai Boxing. Growing up during the 90’s was not easy. I remember that at some point my family was having such a hard time that we had our electricity and gas turned off because we could not pay the bills. It was winter time and we had no heat at home whatsoever. Waking up in the morning was the hardest part. I would open my eyes and feel the frost on my hair. Going to the bathroom at night with no electricity was also a struggle, especially when the bathroom is a shed in a backyard with a hole in the ground. My parents tried really hard to give me and my brother everything we needed. In 2002 I went to study at the branch of Moscow State University in Sevastopol. I was pursuing journalism. My father had to sell his old car to pay for my education, the education that I have not completed because I moved to the United States. WWW.RUSSIANAMERICANMEDIA.COM

I never regret growing up as an underprivileged child. It made me a fighter. It made me stronger, and it made me realize that nothing in life is given. You have to earn it.

I met my husband in my hometown. He was travelling with a friend. We dated for two years, and got married in Ukraine, on a beautiful coast of the Black Sea. Shortly after, we moved to the U.S. I’ve been living in the states for almost nine years now, and I still can’t get rid of my Russian accent. Getting an education in the U.S. was a struggle. I could not just transfer my credits from Moscow State; I had to start all over. I had to get all the necessary prerequisites before I could enroll in any university. I have never been good at math so I had to start at the basic level and work my way up. I set a goal for myself to be the best I could be. Years later, I am a 3.8 GPA student and a vice president of an academic honor society at the Sacramento State University. I am graduating in May 2015 with a degree in Journalism. But most importantly, I am commissioning as a Second Lieutenant (2LT) in the United States Army, Military Intelligence branch. I never regret growing up as an underprivileged child. It made me a fighter. It made me stronger, and it made me realize that nothing is given in this life. You have to earn it. You have to work really hard if you want to become someone. I decided to join the Army ROTC program because I knew that I could do it. Even though I am a mother of two and older than most of the cadets in the program, it did not stop me at all. I walked into the program knowing nothing about military. I am walking out rated second out of 27 cadets of my military class. I competed with over 5,000 cadets on the national Order of Merit List and received an active duty slot. I am proud to say that I am a future officer of the United States Army. Olena Leon

“You learn to be thankful for small things like a mattress and a pillow, because there is someone in a third world country sleeping in a trench with a weapon, guarding your life and their own. It gives you a renewed sense of appreciation,” says Ella.

Ella thought she had a pretty good idea of what the training was going to be like. Only when she got to the base did she realize that her perception did not even scratch the surface of how challenging the program really was. Basic Military Training is designed to push cadets to their limit to see who will fold under pressure. “The idea is to condition you for real life scenarios, where it is crucial to stay calm in chaos because your life, and that of your wing-man depends on it. “Physically it is very challenging, but it is the mental aspect that causes many people to break down.”
For Ella, the biggest challenge was giving up accommodations and retraining herself to a completely different lifestyle. A typical wakeup call at the base is 4:45 am with a meeting in formation in 15 minutes. Air Force routine assumes constant drills, daily classes, and strenuous exercise programs. Base rules ban the use of many things women are addicted to in day-to-day life, such as make-up, mp3 players, and sweets. Music and sweets were among the things Ella missed the most while at the base. “The highlight of our nights was a short break when we were allowed to go outside and eat our granola bars. I had never seen anyone guarding a granola bar with their life until I’d been thought the training.” Ella is now back home, working at an upscale surgery center, as a Oral Sergery Assistant in Roseville, California. A picture of her in the US Air Force uniform is hanging in the living room of her mother’s house, reminding Ella about her unparalleled experience. What she values the most about her military training, is the ability to see the world from outside of her comfort zone.

ur second guest is Ella Zaremba, who has completed special training with the US Air Force. She first got the idea of serving from her brother who was in the military at the time. Friends and relatives did not take her decision seriously at first. However, they soon realized it wasn’t just a “phase” Ella was going through. Once the gravity of her decision dawned on the family, they tried to support her in any way possible. “As with any life-changing decision, I second wondering myself many times, guessing, whether it was truly the right thing to do,” Ella recalls. “My family and friends helped me believe in myself.”
We all have the deepest respect for people that serve. Especially, when these soldiers are young women with an invincible spirit and a deep appreciation for the opportunities this land offers them or their ancestors. So, from all of us, a salute to these brave ladies!

You don’t have to get tongue tied trying start a conversation with that coworker you’ve been smiling at in the break room when you can simply IM them.
I
t’s amazing how technology alters our lives, from the way we shop to the way we meet people and build relationships. It became an essential part of who we are, what we do, and how we do it. After a ferocious but unsuccessful battle with my printer, I gave in and called our office IT guy. He may find common ground with anything that has a cord, a hard drive or a screen, he loses me the minute he opens his mouth. This leads me to believe that there are two types of people in this world, those who 24
RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
understand technology and those who simply use it. That makes me think of all the people that stand behind the things we use every day. People of different kind, those who make my tweets go viral, who allow me to do my last minute Christmas shopping from my computer, who made it possible to “GOOGLE” most anything I want to know. I might not be able to fully understand them in a conversation, but I depend on them to keep my technology running.

Who are they? Where are they coming from? Were they born that smart or did they acquire their skills? There is no doubt that it takes lots of human intelligence to advance the ever changing world of technology. What’s even more amazing, is that some of that intelligence comes from our very own Russianspeaking community. We wish to present you with five brilliant minds that share our heritage and work for top Tech companies, such as Google, Twitter, IBM, Intel, and WalMartLabs.
VASYL PIHUR
Senior Quantitative Analyst @ Google
V
asyl was born in Boryslav, Western Ukraine. Both of his parents come from a small community about 50 kilometers from Boryslav. To attend school, they had to walk to a neighboring village because their town was so small and remote. Vasyl was always a great student, technical subjects, especially math, were his favorite. In 1997, he came to the US. He then graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in Computer Science. After a short summer job, he enrolled into a graduate Biostatistics Program at the University of Louisville and received a PhD 5 years later. Thinking about staying in academia, Vasyl was offered a post-doctoral position in Statistical Genetics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. After staying with the prestigious research university for two years, Vasyl moved to Google where he is currently working as a Senior Quantitative Analyst more commonly known as a Data Scientist.
For those like me, who are not quite sure what data science is, Vasyl made it simple: “Let’s say you have a fitness gadget on your wrist. It constantly records and stores information about your physical state: steps, calories, heart rate, stairs climbed and so on. To find out the total number of calories you have burned throughout the year, you have to do data analysis, i.e. you have to extract daily calories numbers and add them up. It gets complicated very quickly. Quantitative analysts spend their days learning important insights from the data provided with the goals of improving Google products.”

To unsophisticated users like me quantitative analysis sounds complicated. But not for people like Vasyl. To him, being a data scientist is exciting as he gets to learn something new every day. And the best of all? The notion that he helps develop cutting edge technology that continuously improves people’s lives. Like Google Maps for instance, an application Vasyl personally uses every day.

alery Girshfeld was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. Both of his parents had college degrees so of course Valery attended an elite English school in Moscow. His parents always encouraged him to try even harder and do better. Once his dad helped him understand math, he fell in love with it for life. Because math came so easy for Valery, his parents transferred him to a school which offered an advanced math program. His family moved to the US and Valery followed his passion for math and logic and got a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He then got a Master’s of Science with concentration in Finance. He believes both hard work and luck got him the position of a staff network engineer with Twitter. He holds an advanced position that tops regular and senior engineers. Ever since elementary school, Valery crushed his teeth on advanced math courses dreaming of getting a college degree in math or science. Well he got both! His advanced education landed him a position with a small startup company in Palo Alto, California. His small startup was

unexpectedly bought out by Microsoft. Overnight, he was employed by a leading IT company. He stayed with the firm for over four years, which is considered a very long time to stay in one place in the IT world. This was the jump start of Valery’s career, it opened a lot of doors and eventually lead him to a position with Twitter. His responsibilities include network architecture and design, implementation, maintenance and project work. His favorite part about working with Twitter is the Challenge. “There is a point in your career when you realize you know your job inside out as you’ve been doing it for a long time. Everything about it becomes familiar and easy. That is why I really appreciate complex projects that make me walk off the beaten path, think outside the box and look for solutions. Such tasks could be compared to advanced math problems that may seem impossible to solve at first. They are challenging, time consuming, and require lots of energy and efforts, and yet, the euphoria you get when you finally solve one can be compared to nothing” says Valery.
A
lexandr holds a degree in Informational Technology and works as the Information Technology Consultant for IBM, one of the global leaders in Tech industry. Nevertheless, he is convinced that advanced education and a good position are not enough to stay on top of this constantly evolving field. The pace of technological growth requires constant skill adjustment – a challenge Alexander loves the most about his job. Alexander was born in Ukraine and moved to United States where he earned his diploma. He had an ambitious goal of getting a job with one of the leading tech companies, but it wasn’t luck that yielded him a position with IBM. He kept his vision in perspective, constantly advanced in his skill, and ultimately his persistence paid off when he got a position with the tech giant. Alexander describes his job as constant learning where he has to continuously mentally advance to new heights. It requires him to stay on top of different aspects of the IT field, analyze new trends, and come up with best possible solutions for challenging problems. Alex also knows what it means to be on the other side of the source code as he embraces technology as a user. He is a fan of new tech gadgets with his easy to use portable iPad being one of his favorites. One of the aspects Alex especially appreciates about technology is that it makes communication instant and friendlier as various communication channels make information exchange easier and faster than ever before.

tan starts his morning by solving a problem on his chess.com app. He swears it works better then coffee. It wakes him up and helps him focus on what he plans to do during the day. This useful habit comes handy as Stan’s responsibilities include assuring that you have a pleasant experience shopping on a website of one of the largest retails in the nation- WalMart.com. Stan is a Senior System’s engineer at WalmartLabs. He works with a team of experts that empower a cyber-version of the retailer giant. This is how Stan describes his work “I am a janitor, a builder and an architect all in one. As a digital janitor I need to ensure the data can flow without interruptions so that customers can have a pleasant shopping experience. Occasionally the job calls for a “clean¬up on aisle 6”. The spills should not cause the customer to leave the store. As an architect I get to make design decisions so, as a builder, I can build my pipes and aisles to minimize interruptions. All this for a store that has greater sales then the entire country of Austria.” Although Stan works for a giant fast growing retailer, the magnitude of the company wasn’t the major factor that drove Stan to work for WalMartLabs. The engineer was rather looking for a job that would challenge him, allow him to learn new technologies, and work with smart people. He strongly believes companies that can create an environment where engineers are empowered to experiment with new ideas attract talented employees. At WalmartLabs he found the team he wanted to be a part of and the technologies that interested him. Stan was born in the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine and comes from Ashkenazi Jewish descent. Stan’s parents did a fundamental job of installing the importance of education, a factor that helped Stan embrace the subjects he loved, such as math and physics, and perceiver with the ones he didn’t. Stan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from San Francisco State University.

В Древней Греции булочник мог занять очень высокий пост, а в Риме раб, умеющий печь хлеб, стоил в десять раз дороже самого искусного гладиатора. В Индии до сих пор преступникам запрещается есть хлеб, что для них является большим несчастьем, а по старым германским законам преступник наказывался втрое строже за убийство пекаря, чем за убийство любого другого человека. Первый — сезонная выпечка с белым шоколадом, фисташками и клюквой. Точно охарактеризовать вкус сложно — что-то среднее между десертным хлебом и сдобной булкой. Белый шоколад тает при выпечке, пропитывая воздушное тесто, и превращается в нежный крем. Фисташки придают изумительную хрустящую нотку, гармонично обыгрывая в этом тандеме кисловатую клюкву. Настоящий предновогодний фурор для всех ценителей домашней выпечки! Вторым кандидатом моего хит-листа стало блюдо из скрытого меню под названием “A-1-Asa”– горячий сэндвич из ростбифа на свежей чиабатте. Не ищите это наименование в меню, его там нет. Дело в том, что появилось это блюдо случайно, изобрёл его тот самый Аса, один из местных поваров, как “блюдо дня”. К его удивлению люди, попробовавшие сэндвич один раз, стали возвращаться за ним постоянно. И это не удивительно. Хрустящая корочка только что испеченного итальянского хлеба чиабатта, губчатая текстура которого идеально подходит для того, чтобы впитать солнечные брызги оливкового масла вкупе с соусом из кинзы, на который укладывают поджаренные и пахнущие дымком ломтики ростбифа, обрамленные кольцами красного лука. WHO ARE WE KIDDING? A “well-behaved,” responsible, respectable queen does not make headlines or good reality TV!
So we end up with shows like “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” that dilute a true meaning of pageantry – to use the power of beauty to make a difference. Pageants promote Confidence, Career Opportunities, a True Meaning of Being a Role Model, and Giving Back to the Community.
It builds up a popular belief that pageant girls are just ditzy and glitzy, with little else to offer on top of a pretty face and a fake smile. Unfortunately, this phony stereotypes dilute the sole purpose of beauty pageants – to use the power of beauty to make a difference. A true pageant queen is one who wins the crown and gives back to her community. She capitalizes on the opportunities presented to her, and becomes a role model for others across the country, or even the world. A crown and a sash are just the tools that allow the girls to make an impact on the world. The real reward is the satisfaction that comes with making a difference. Hey, but who are we kidding? A “well-behaved,” responsible, respectable queen does not make headlines or good reality TV! Who would be interested in that? A girl who competes in a pageant puts herself out there to be judged for the good, for the bad, and everything in between. The outcome is based on the judge’s opinion, what the director is looking for in their new titleholder, and the magical moment that God intends for a girl. Every contestant leaves

I have been on many different sides of the table, as a contestant, as a judge, and as a director. Till this day I don’t know who has it easiest, as everyone has a huge responsibility. Pageants promote confidence, career opportunities, the true meaning of being a role model, and giving back to the community. It has been 5 years since the day I was crowned Miss Russian California 2010 and I cannot describe how my life has transformed. I feel like I can write a book about my experiences, the different people I’ve met, and my transformation. Since the age of 18, I competed in 8 pageants. I have place top 20 at Miss California USA 2011, won Miss Orange County 2012, placed top 10 in Miss Nevada USA 2014 & 2015 and won Reina Mundial Del Banano 2014 in Ecuador. I have won some, lost some and each experience was completely different. I have also responded completely differently with each of my results. I’ve celebrated, I’ve cried, I was angry, and I’ve rejoiced. I cannot explain why
the things happened the way they did and I don’t think anyone can. I believe God has a purpose for each person and he has had an amazing journey for me. I have had the opportunity to do many extraordinary things, and one that stands out is the opportunity to travel to Ecuador for three weeks to represent USA in a world competition called “Reina Mundial Del Banano.” Each year Ecuador holds a pageant to picks one prominent young woman that will serve as an ambassador representing their trade. The contestants are invited from all over the world. Each girl has to be a titleholder in her own country. I was invited to participate on behalf of USA. It was a very spontaneous trip and I had no expectation but to meet some of the most beautiful women from all over the world and embrace Ecuadorian culture. Speaking very little Spanish, I managed to win the hearts of the people and the judges and brought home the crown.

Susan Romanishin As many immigrants, my parents put their lives on the line, left their families, friends, businesses and communities, to give their children an opportunity for a better future. Growing up, I set a goal to start my career early and I graduate high school at the age of 15. During my high school years I choose to spend my hours in the library and missed the opportunity to participate in sport activities, dances classes, and any other extra-circulars activities. People often ask me, whether I regret giving up the fun of teenage years to graduate so early. My answer is - Absolutely not!
Yes, I was a bookworm who spend her lunch recess at the library. And that is exactly how I’ve managed to get high school out of the way and get on with college. I’ve soon earned a Bachelor degree in communication with a minor in accounting and now have an amazing career. I am developing my path in real estate holding a position that provides private money lending for investors, developers, and rehabbers for short-term loans. At the same time I am following my passion to empower women. I share the priceless experience that I have gained from my victories, my failures, and my work in community with other girls that are looking for a way to make an impact. I help them embrace their personalities, unleash their confidence, and ultimately, make a difference on the world around them. So far it has been an amazing journey, and I have my eyes wide open, ready to see what comes next. 40

HAPPILY BLENDED Surprised. Confused. Intrigued. This is exactly how I felt when a pretty Nordstrom associate said “Multsumesk”, handing me a silver bag with my new Chanel lipstick. The thing is, I knew exactly what she was saying. She said “Thank You” in Moldavian. Last time I heard that, I was a kid clinging to my mother’s hand as she was getting her passport stamped by a TSI inspector. We were at the airport in Moldova, my mother’s homeland, permanently moving to the U.S. There are not that many people from this tiny post-soviet country leaving here, in California. And the Nordstrom’s associate clearly wasn’t one of them. Not even close! Blue-eyed platinum blonde with a hip boy-short haircut and delicate French features, she was as far away from the olive skin toned Moldavian women as the East is from the West. Either she felt my confusion, or I forgot to close my mouth when my jaw dropped, but the girl smiled and explained, “My husband is from Moldova. I recognized the accent. I learned the language so I can talk to his parents on Skype.”
Wow! This must be love! Why else would someone learn a language of a country most Americans don’t even know exists? I couldn’t help but ask her questions. A lot of them. How did they meet? What did she think about his culture? What was their families’ reaction? And that’s when I got curious – how does it feel to

be in love with a Russian? Or Ukrainian? Or Moldavian? Can mixed marriages flourish in real life or is it simply an illusion that disappears at the dawn of reality? What happens when two different cultures collide under one roof? Are the two ultimately doomed to clash in a perfect storm or can they create a new realm, different from everyone else’s? I started asking around, looking for mixed marriages where one of the two spouses comes from the Russian-speaking community. I didn’t have to look too far. It turns out they live all around us, some of them just married, others celebrating their silver or gold wedding anniversaries. Not only do they make it work, but they make it work well! The couples I’ve interviewed agreed to share some of their family secrets. So let’s take a peek into their Happily Ever After.

Vera & Robert Myers He is an American of German descent, she was born and raised in Ukraine. Although they come from two completely different countries, they don’t consider their family blended. The two have so much in common, they don’t even realize they are culturally different. The couple has been together for almost 20 years and both strongly feel that they are a perfect match!
The newlyweds. Gina is part Italian, part French, Toly is part Ukrainian and part Russian. They met at a community pool where she was working as a lifeguard. Fun fact about the two? They celebrate holidays twice, once with her family in Italian style, and once with his family in Slavic style. Both are loving it as they get to experience the best of both cultures! Down the road when they have kids they wish to teach them Russian and Ukrainian so they can talk to their grandparents.
When we first announced our engagement, people had very different reactions, from “Great news!” to “You are marrying WHO?” It was never about us personally though, but rather about our nationalities.
Morgan & Alex Botnariuc She is an American, he is from Moldova. They met while working at Saks Fifth Avenue at South Coast Plaza in Southern California. Alex was so bold he didn’t bother to asking IF they could go out for lunch, but rather WHEN could they go out. It’s been five years since then but they feel like they knew each other from before this lifetime. The most unique thing about their family? They come from totally different parts of the world, but share the same values in life.
Between the two of us we speak six languages: Spanish, English, Russian, Romanian, Moldovan, and Italian. Being multicultural makes us more well-rounded. Plus, now we have family all over the word.
Eleni & Sergey Malko Sergey was born in Lvov, Ukraine, and then lived in Norlisk, Russia. Eleni was born in Athens, Greece, and raised in New York. He is a professional ballroom instructor and the owner of a private dance studio. She is a personal chef and caterer. They met at a local “Dancing with the Stars” competition. He was one of the trainers. She was one of the contestants. They came in second out of 400 candidates, but she won the best prize – his heart. It’s been eight years since then.

Alex & Christine Tsymbalist Alex was born in Odessa, Ukraine. Christine is a Californian girl. They met in college in Oregon through a mutual friend and instantly clicked. The two happened to share the same humor and outlook on life. It’s been 8 years since then and they are still inseparable. According to them, the best thing about having a blended family is the ability to learn and appreciate similarities and differences of each other’s culture. They manage to find laughter and peace in any situation, good and bad. The ability to stand by each other and be patient to one another is what keeps them going.
David is an American, Oksana is half-Ukrainian, half-Russian, raised in Crimea. The two met in London almost 22 years ago. Oksana is an attorney by trade, but having a blended family taught her more about compromise and negotiation than a law school. By now, David knows a bit of Russian with his favorite words being quite sophisticated – such as “ny i ny” and “predpochitayu.” As for the holidays? The couple stays open –minded and celebrates both, Hanukah and Christmas.

Q. It took Christopher Columbus almost 10 years to discover America. And he only did it on the forth voyage attempt. And even so, it happened by a navigation mistake. Can you share with us how you discovered your America? A. I find it difficult to be compared to the
great Columbus, but, ironically, it also took me ten years to discover my promised land. The difference is in number of attempts. I failed sixteen times to have my application for exit visa approved. Only on the seventeenth attempt, ten years later, I got a “GO.” Unlike Columbus, however, I clearly knew where I was heading, as I had my mental navigation set for the United States. Q. So, when the long-awaited moment came and you found yourself in America, what was your first real discovery? A. The memory of my so-called “first discovery” makes me smile. During my first grocery runs, I was fascinated by pictures of strawberries on cereal boxes. The idea of finding fresh berries inside a dry food box intrigued me. It took me buying quite a few cereals to realize, that there were NO strawberries inside the box.
Speaking seriously, I was very fortunate to have some amazing mentors in my early years in America. One of my mentors, Hubert Humphrey, is especially fascinating, as this is a men that went from ZERO to HERO. Humphrey came from a very poor background, went to work for a railway company, and ended up as one of the most legendary entrepreneurs of financial industry. This man built two marketing companies with a market cap valued at $2,500,000,000 dollars from ground zero. Humphrey shared with me a powerful insight about the American economic
system. He said, “Remember, The System saves you from yourself.” I quickly learned that America is the country of absolutely unlimited possibilities and opportunities if you understand and apply The System. The thing is, HUMAN CAPITAL is the core value of the CAPITALIST system. The biggest power of the American System is that NOBODY can say NO to your dream. There is absolutely nothing in this country that can stop you from reaching your goal. But first, you have to buy into The System, you have to demonstrate a daily discipline in using it. Q. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned during your life in the US? A. In the world of business there is a concept known as “COST TO BENEFIT.” It means that in order to receive some kind of benefit in future you have to pay the price for it today. Every benefit has its cost. I am sure RTM readers know exactly what I mean. We all had to leave behind our friends, jobs, houses, things that were most dear to us in order to come here. We had to start all over again. This is a pretty big price to pay for the benefit of becoming an American.
However, moving to a better place is not the end of the journey. The most important lesson I’ve learned, is that you have to keep moving, keep trying! Don’t quit! Every time life gets you on your knees, take a breath and get up! Keep walking! You will make it! It works! It always does. Q. You started as a field sales agent for a major 160 year old New York Company, and became a Regional Vice President responsible for 17 states in just 8 years. Can you share the secret of your professional career achievements?

A. I will start with my first disappointment when I just moved to San Francisco. To my absolute dismay, I discovered that local TV channels did not broadcast any soccer games of my favorite team – “Dynamo Kiev.” That was a real blow to my passion as a fan. However, every TV station was broadcasting the SF Giants. At first I found baseball to be really boring! But pretty soon I’ve learned that baseball is a favorite pastime in America, so began to learn the game, and discovered a HUGE SECRET to success!
In baseball there are bases where players stand; there is a pitcher, the player that throws a small ball with a high speed: and there is a hitter, a player that is supposed to hit the ball thrown at him. The absolutely amazing fact is that the player who misses most of the balls thrown at him, still earns a multimillion dollar contract as long as he hits at least three balls out of ten...missing seven! It may even look like he is getting paid for missing shots, but the truth is, he is simply paid for continuously swinging the bat! It’s that SIMPLE! This simplicity put lots of fire in my belly! So SIMPLE! Just keep swinging the bat in whatever you do! I got licensed as an agent and began making phone calls through the numbers out of phone books. Not just calls, but up to 240 calls daily! Swinging the bat daily. Would you think I would get at least two appointments out of 240 calls! You bet I would! That simple! So,

This lesson I’ve learned early in my career, still serves today. Practice hard, learn to enjoy sweat and tears at practice, and keep swinging the bat. This is true in sports, in business, and most importantly, in life. Q. What is your role with World Class Advisors? A. To answer your question I’ll start with an old English joke. What is the difference between a pessimist and an optimist? The answer: The pessimist has more information. There is a good deal of truth in this joke. People that try to navigate their investments and financial markets on their own often become pretty skeptical. It is understandable, as overload of complex information simply creates confusion and disbelief for an average consumer.

For some it’s to drive a car with 12 cylinders, for others it is to have a family with 12 children. Some dream of sitting at the head of a table at a business meeting, others wish to head a table at a family dinner. Some want to serve, others to be served. So many questions, so many answers, so many options… One thing I am certain of -- being happy is undeniably the first step to success, whatever happiness means to you.
Q. Could you share a little about your plans and ideas for the Sacramento region? A. I am glad you asked. We are planning to launch an AmericanRussian Business Center called FIREBIRD. The name for the organization goes back to the Slavic calendar, where 2014 is The Year of Firebird. The Center will support local entrepreneurs and professionals representing the Russianspeaking community. It will also provide practical help in business expansion regionally, statewide, and countrywide. We are also planning to establish global connections with Russian-speaking business communities around the globe.
The other important project is a non-profit organization called ARFA, American Russian Fraternal Association. ARFA’s Mission is to support continuously an alignment of our cultural values that we bring to America and an organic adoption of American cultural values into ONE MISSION AND VISION for the Brighter Future for all people who want PEACE and Happiness everywhere in The West and The East. Q. It used to be that a smart person was someone who knew all the right answers. These days, a smart person is someone who asks the right questions. If I would ask you to name one right question, what would it be?

Руководил этим «музыкальным чудом» аббат Антонио Вивальди, в народе его называли - Рыжий Монах. Гениальный композитор работал с детскими душами, а его музыка окрыляла их жизни. И мало кто знал, что сам великий маэстро всю жизнь тяжело болел и при ходьбе задыхался. Но музыка возвышала и его дух, музыка укрепляла и его тело...

же давно не секрет, что музыка и игра на музыкальных инструментах обладают развивающим и целительным влиянием на мозг, интеллект и психику ребенка в целом, ведь «где музыка там плохого быть не может!" Классические звуковые композиции и гармонически благозвучные музыкальные произведения несут не просто звуковую информацию - они излучают жизнь, благотворно воздействуя на гены клетки, на весь организм, на всю душу ребенка! Вот почему мыслящие, интеллигентные люди всегда относились к творческому развитию детей очень серьезно; они с детства «причащали» их к искусству. Так, в дворянских семьях обязательно давали детям музыкальное воспитание, учили пению, игре на инструментах, рисованию. Занимаясь детским музыкальным воспитанием, родители и учителя делают для ребенка жизненно важное дело в плане формирования его как зрелой личности. Кроме прочего, «музыкальный» ребенок с детства приучается к постоянному труду, усидчивости, учится терпению и дисциплине; ежедневное погружение в мир прекрасной музыки развивает эмоциональный и духовный мир ребенка, делает его богаче и сильнее в культурном плане.
