from the publisher

Russia has been dominating the news lately, mostly due to the Winter Olympics taking place in a small bay city of Sochi.

The

HONOR

OF CARRYING THE TORCH

I

t took the Russian government seven years and over $51 billion dollars to transform a fisherman’s village into a state-of-the-art sports complex equipped with the latest technology. Yet, it wasn't the special effects or the grand opening ceremony that touched me the most. It was rather a mere fact that all of a sudden my homeland became an international arena that brought together 88 different nations with one common goal – to carry on an ancient tribute to the art of sports.

To us Slavic Americans, the Olympic broadcasts from Russia were a great source of pride to see on television, here in California. Unfortunately, watching Sochi activities was not the only reason our homeland made the news. There were also many horrific reports from Ukraine as well. Many martyred lives were lost in the Ukrainians' struggle to choose between Western or Eastern political influences. We regret to see such turmoil in the countries of our ancestors, a place where many of our families came from. In Ukraine many had to give up their lives in order to be heard by their politicians, whereas here in California, we have

the luxury of meeting freely with our representatives. We have the freedom to consider our State Capitol ‘The People’s House'. And while politicians are trying to decide on what is "Right" and what is "Wrong" in terms of the unrest in Eastern Europe, we, peoples from the former Soviet Union now here in California, are deeply thankful for the freedoms granted by our new homeland. For that reason our community is honored to come together at the California State Capitol for the fifth year in a row to meet our policymakers. The Annual RussianSpeaking community Partners Capitol Reception allows community leaders to personally meet their representatives. This opportunity to meet and share with other cultures is one of the reasons that we will be celebrating the 11th International Kids Festive this spring. This festival steps beyond the boundaries of the Slavic cultures; it also involves Asian Americans, African-Americans, MexicanAmericans, and many others. So as we pursue our busy lives, and grab a Starbucks on the way to work, we feel awful to hear the news of the turmoil in Ukraine. Here, we Slavic Americans are

using our new-found freedom to keep and celebrate what makes us different. And though we have traditions which make us unique, we possess those common traits shared by all people, the desire to be free of war, and to raise our children in safety and peace. Just as at the Sochi Olympic Games, we ought to be joined for one purpose. We can ignite more “Good Will” to be spread to other people. Together, we can seek Peace, not War. Let our effort begin with us who have known both. Let’s begin now.

Warmly, SERGEY IVANNIKOV CEO & Publisher Russian American Media, Inc.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY

“I want my community to be aware of the similarities and curious about the differences between Russians and Americans.“

T

he recurring thought "We're not so different" has popped into my head at various times, from sitting at the kitchen table with my host family to chatting with university students. Our histories may be worlds apart but ultimately, we want the same things. Yes, being an American student in Russia is an entirely different experience than being born in Russia and permanently living here; however, as such I have a unique perspective. Like most Americans, I have watched my fair share of Cold War movies and had shaped my opinions of Russia long before I planned to study here. Upon my arrival to St. Petersburg, I was met with stern faces and strict rules but I felt at ease. The customs of icers were pleasant enough but there was a real sense of seriousness in their demeanor. Immediately, I was greeted by a St. Petersburg State University student who guided me out of the airport. After a few days of horror stories meant to keep me out of trouble, I was placed in my host home. My host home is conveniently located in between Nevskij Prospekt and the Summer Gardens and my host family consists of one married couple and their twenty-three year old daughter. My host father, Konstantin is a chemist and a university professor with a strong interest in international relations. His wife, Tamara is also a chemist; however, her interests include more domestic politics and ethnic studies. My host sister Tanya is a quiet, university student. In many ways, my Russian family is similar to my American family. Every night we all sit down to a feast that Tamara has prepared while we discuss how our day went. While relations between Russia and the United States are not always on the best terms, the people of these great

nations should not be affected by politics. Although we both have our stereotypes of each other we remain similar in our aspirations. Generally, we both want to see our loved-ones do well, at times we wish our homes were nicer or bigger and we all have a few complaints about work. Communication has never been easier for ordinary people living in such distant places. I am not alone in believing that creating and maintaining friendships abroad is incredibly important. Many Russian students that I have met have told me that they also have internet friends from abroad. Staying connected with friends abroad is great for language skills; whether you are learning a language or helping a friend retain or gain language pro iciency. The advantages of communicating with friends abroad are endless. I have been lucky enough to meet plenty of locals who are more than willing to show off their beautiful city. Originally founded in 1703, St. Petersburg is an especially beautiful city with countless wonders. I strongly encourage everyone (Russian-origin or not) to visit St. Petersburg. In just one day you are able to see such attractions and historic monuments as the Hermitage (Winter Palace), St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Church of Spilled Blood, the Summer Gardens, and Kazan Cathedral. This city boosts numerous attractions with major historical signi icance. Although much of the city has been rebuilt, St. Petersburg still possess a feeling of authenticity that I have not felt in many other cities. When you walk down the streets of this architectural utopia, it feels untouched. So many buildings have historical signi icance but have yet to be revamped. The architecture is much like the people of St. Petersburg: diverse, and with one glance perhaps intimidating, but within

a second you begin to see the beauty and the warmth as you begin to wonder what they have been through. The Sacramento area is so fortunate to have such a large and organic Russianspeaking community. Arriving in Russia, I was not met by too much culture shock because I have been lucky enough to spend time in the Sacramento area. Of course, I ate more Ukrainian food when in California than I do when eating out in St. Petersburg, but I ind the two very similar. The borscht that my host mother makes is very similar to the borscht that I order at Firebird Restaurant in Carmichael, as my host mother is actually Ukrainian. Although the differences between Americans and Russians can sometimes be transparent, I am learning more every day. The people of St. Petersburg have been incredibly patient with me and my mediocre Russian skills; I am constantly confusing people with my limited vocabulary. The most important things for me to bring back home are not Soviet faux fur hats and matryoshka dolls, but awareness and curiosity. I want my community to be aware of the similarities and curious about the differences between Russians and Americans. Russia Time guest columnist Alexandria Solari is scheduled to graduate from the University of Paci ic with a BA in international relations this coming May. She currently is working on connecting an agribusiness and wine delegation from Moldova with Lodi, California winery owners under the auspices of the Northern California World Trade Center and the International Visitor’s Leadership Program. Her name says it all. She is smart, sweet, and absolutely stunning. She became the face of the Slavic Community ever since she won Miss Russian California 2014 and she is undeniably intriguing in her new role. Nadejda had never competed in a pageant before, so she went through a slight phase of self-doubt. It was the encouragement from her family and loved ones that allowed her to recognize her strong desire to represent her heritage in our diverse community. She also saw it as an opportunity to get involved and challenge herself. Nadejda recalls the six weeks of rehearsals with nine young women as one of the best and most rewarding experiences. “We had amazing people with the Russian American Media and pageant coaches that took care of us and so selflessly made themselves available to ensure we were prepared for our big day. They instilled in us the importance of good sportsmanship and the value of being ourselves. As we got ready to talk about our passions, they ensured us that speaking from the heart is what is going to guide us through the answer and comfort us on stage,” says Nadejda. She believes that time leading up to the pageant was what made the whole experience so meaningful. It forced her to reflect upon herself, and think about who she truly is. It gave the participants the opportunity to think about what they wanted to share about themselves. For all of the contestants putting themselves out in the open was a growing experience both as a group and as individuals. Encouraging one another seemed to make them stronger. “I loved the fact that absolutely none of us ever hesitated to help one another back stage, anything from lending makeup to painting nails to just simply toward the end I knew that crown or no crown, title or no title, I will be walking away with a new appreciation for pageants, greater knowledge, a moving experience, and most importantly, newfound friendships. Winning to me, meant that I get the chance to take a step further and proceed to represent the Russian American community, continue to grow, and work hard to be the best role model I can be,” says Nadejda. Hearing her name called as the new Miss Russian California 2014 was truly a surreal and honorable moment. She was overcome with so much emotion that she felt like her heart exploded with joy. Accomplishing something that she had worked hard for and genuinely desired felt like a dream come true, especially since she contended with so many incredible young women. She felt exceptionally thankful to the sponsors and all others who brought the event to life and gave her this once in a lifetime opportunity. She felt especially fortunate to have the chance to share her interest in nutrition and speak out on the importance of our future generations to understand how crucial it is to live a healthy lifestyle. Nadejda have participated in the Roseville & Sacramento Santa Parade, Christmas Lights for the underprivileged children, Pirate and Princess Night at Chickfil-A Arden Fair, and she walked for many talented designers at different fashion shows. The support from her family, friends, and loved ones also played a key role in her courage to compete and be successful. She feels blessed to be a part of something so special and she will never forget the many memories she made. “I’m proud to say that I overcame a lot of fears, particularly public speaking, which rendered me to grow as a person. It wouldn’t have been the same without the other girls doing the same alongside with me, teaming up all together to show the public the accomplishments of our community as well as the remarkable Slavic women within it,” sums it up for our Miss Russian California 2014.

the miss quiz WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? I get stuck on YouTube for hours watching cute cat videos.

3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU? Benevolent, empathetic, positive

YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? I’m sure we have all tripped, stumbled or even fell in front of people, but feel lucky if you haven’t fallen off a treadmill at a public gym yet. Not only did I take a painful fall, but so did my ego. Never look back, one second you will be running, the next colliding with a moving treadmill belt lunging you into humiliation. But if it ever does happen, laugh it off, keep your head up and know that it will all pass over.

WHAT DOES BEAUTY MEAN TO YOU?

Beauty goes beyond what the eye can see. It comes from within. Whatever is on the inside of a person ultimately shines through the outside.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS? I see myself working hard on my degree in something that I love and having a stable job. There would be no greater sense of accomplishment than to be an independent, successful woman.

WHAT’S WH HA YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF? My understanding character and my fashion sense. I have a pretty much unbreakable habit of biting my lip when I’m nervous.

WHY DO YOU LIKE YOGA? Yoga is a great stress reliever for me. Creative Director: Susan Romanishin

YOUR PERFECT MEAL?

Fresh sushi, with hot jasmine tea by the beach on a warm summer night, topped off with a slice of chocolate tuxedo cheesecake.

the INFORMATION

hey go by The Andreys. They look as they just walked out of a Hollywood poster. Black fitted suits, fancy bow ties, and perfectly messed-up hair. The two easily fit James Bond profile with one little exception – their killer weapon is not a deadly gun. It’s rather an amazing sense of humor that makes the two young men the «most wanted» event hosts in town.

Andrey Kazak, 20 and Andrey Hurzhyi, 26 are two hosts and event planners that are very enthusiastic about what they do. Their job is to make people smile

Andrey Kazak

Andrey Hurzhyi

let’s GET TO KNOW THEM

and create unforgettable memories. The Andreys mainly focus on weddings.

Andreys, who are your main clients?

Andrey K: Well, we’ve done events for all sorts of people. Our big advantage is that we work well with everyone; people from different cultures, traditions, and languages. Here, in Sacramento, the biggest thing is probably Slavic weddings. I would guess, out of all the weddings (and we’ve done a lot), the Russian community would probably be our biggest and most popular audience.

They multitask, doing anything from finding venues and arranging decorations to writing scripts and singing or acting on stage. You name it, they do it. We met at a Starbucks café to talk about their artistic ideas, goals and inspirations.

.R

A

M

.

Do you have Slavic fans?

Andrey K: Absolutely. We actually had a wedding when a young man came up to us holding a video recorder. And he was like, “You know guys, this is a third wedding I’ve attended that you’ve been hosting. I’ve recorded all three. What I love about them is that they’re all different. Everything you guys do is new and fresh.” That is something we take great pride in. Sacramento is a small world; especially the Slavic community. Russian-speaking people are all over the place. For instance, whenever we host weddings in Seattle or Los Angeles we always meet guests that came from Sacramento. So our job is to make sure we don’t repeat ourselves and connect with each crowd.

Do you host anything besides weddings?

Andrey H: We mostly concentrate on weddings at the moment because that’s what we love to do. But we’ve done all sorts of things before, anything from media projects, to promotions, youth camps and fundraisers. Andrey K: We can also plan an event for a client. We have all the connections necessary to put together a function on any budget. We take care of anything from finding talent, video and photo professionals, venues, decorations. You come up with your repertoire on your own. What is your working process like?

Andrey H: Every wedding that we host is tailored to our clients, every single one. We meet with the couple, get to know them, figure out the dynamics of their relationship, learn how they interact with each other, and then use all that information to create a program. The script is then coordinated and approved by the clients to make sure they feel comfortable with our ideas. Andrey K: Exactly. And we never go beyond the comfort zone of our patrons. By the time we get to know them, we can tell exactly what their limits are. When did you come together as event planners and hosts?

Andrey K: We’ve been doing this for a while.

Our goal is to create an experience that is so vivid, it would not fade away as the years go by

What are some interesting places that you have performed at?

Andrey K: Our wedding hosting took off when one of our very close friends came up to us and said, “You guys have this incredible synergy, could you maybe host my wedding?” So, we decided to give it a shot. The audience was blown away and we were caught up in their excitement. There is something about the weddings… Maybe it’s the idea that it’s one in a lifetime for each couple. That’s how we like to think about it. You don’t want those memories to fade. Our goal as MCs is to create an experience that is so vivid, it would not fade away as the years go by. We make sure it’s unforgettable!

Andrey H: One day we had a wedding at a mansion. It was something different. It was more intimate. We had about, what, a hundred guests, but the ambience of the event was grand.

Are you trying to create something unique for each couple?

Andrey K: Exactly. Most hosts build their programs around the bride forgetting about the groom.

Andrey K: We are the masters of improvisation. We can switch things up, make it better on the spot. That’s how we create a unique atmosphere and connect with all types of people, whatever the program may be.

:: R

T

M

Andrey H: People try to think outside the box. We like to think inside the box. Client’s preferences and objectives from the box we are working in. We are not wasting our time or energy on anything not important to our current project or audience. For example, if our audience is Slavic, we work within the boundaries of Slavic culture. If our target is Spanish-speaking, we go outside our comfort zone and learn some Spanish phrases and traditions to get a connection with the crowd.

Andrey H: Officially our business started in beginning of September 2012. By the end of the month we came up with The Andreys and made it official. Before that we were working together for at least four years. We were doing camps, volunteered for non-profits, and participated in media projects.

Andrey H: We concentrate on a couple and their guests because relationships are what’s really important.

34

Andrey K: Andrey and I are not just business partners, we are good friends. We just connect so well you could say we complete each other. I’m energetic, I’m the guy who talks a lot. I’m the loud voice at the event. He is the brain. He is very smart. When we sit together, we just brainstorm. We come up with ideas, then we put together all the details and start talking. We find a way to put those details to work specifically for the client we work with.

Andrey K: We did a wedding in a castle. It was one of the most memorable weddings we’ve hosted. Very elegant, very formal. That’s another great perk of being event planners; we build connections with various venues and vendors.

What inspires you the most?

Andrey H: Relationships with people. Andrey K: We don’t just treat people as clients; we treat them like our friends. We’ve hosted weddings for 400 plus and we’ve MCed events for 50 people. At the end of the day, the relationships we build is what truly matters. What are your goals?

Andrey H: We have a million of them. We like to make people happy so we wish to touch as many lives as we can. We like to see people smiling. We enjoy making memories. Wedding is a celebration and we want to keep it this way. You can learn more about the dynamic duo by visiting their website at www.TheAndreys.com. DATES W

ith February being a month of love, anything romantic is deemed to be relevant. When it comes to romance, dinner and movies are the first two things that come to mind. While the first date at a restaurant can be truly unforgettable, at some point eating out and going to the theaters gets old and boring. Unless you are a teenager. Additionally, stuffing on food and getting glued to a movie screen are probably not the healthiest or most memorable ways of spending time together. For those of you who are brave (or bored) enough to try something new, we wish to offer a few fresh ideas that can get you and your partner in the best shape of your life, both emotionally and physically. Here are the alternative ways to spend time together shared by four of our local power couples known to be among the busiest players of our social arena.

"Getting Personal" – a close examination of

Congressman

Ami Bera, M. D. Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. represents the 7th Congressional District which encompasses Folsom, Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove. Bera is a well-established politician. He is a member of the Science and Technology and Foreign Affairs committees. At the same time he is Medical Doctor that comes from an immigrant household. Such an abundant background gives Bera a broader perspective on life and politics and a deeper understanding of his Russian-speaking constituents. In a special interview for Russian Time magazine Bera shares some of his personal out-look.

OG: What is your favorite thing about being a doctor? AB: I was drawn to the medical profession for the same reasons I decided to run for Congress - I wanted to help people, and that’s my favorite thing about both occupations. As a young doctor, I would be treating a patient who was my grandmother’s age and she’d share things with me that she wouldn’t be telling anyone else— things she was worried about or hoping for—and sometimes just

by listening I would be able to help. By listening to people, you are also able to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan to truly make a person feel better. There are very few professions that allow you to directly impact people’s lives so much in a way that brings them real relief. OG: From a doctor’s perspective, does our American society have a ‘chronic illness’? AB: Some of the serious illnesses we are dealing with all too often in the United States are heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. As our population ages and people are living longer, we see these chronic illnesses more. They can be big financial burdens for families, and we are losing far too many people to them. It’s important that we work on promoting healthy lifestyles so we can prevent these types of illnesses that are sometimes lifestyle diseases. That means we must invest in preventative care. We can prevent the heart attack, and we can diagnose cancer early when it can be treated. That’s not only good medicine; it saves lives and cuts the costs of care. OG: Does your medical background affect your political path in any way? AB: My experience as a doctor has been a strong foundation for

I am working with members of both parties to find real solutions for our nation’s problems. I am part of a bipartisan group of lawmakers called the No Labels Problem Solvers who meet regularly and, through listening to each other, build trust, and find common ground to move our country forward.

OG: Are there any common traits that unite our two cultures? Can you spot similarities between the Russianspeaking and Indian communities?

Through my work in my district office I am able to immediately help people resolve issues with the federal government through casework. For instance, we help people who have trouble getting their passports, and we help veterans whose benefits are being held up. We won’t always be able to solve every problem, but we .R

AB: Born and raised in California to Indian immigrant parents, I understand the strengths and struggles of firstgeneration Americans. And like my own parents and family, many Russianspeaking families came to America as immigrants. I think our cultures both value strong work ethic to build and create strong communities and to create better opportunities for future generations. Living in America as immigrants or as the sons and daughters of immigrants, we also have similar struggles of how to integrate

ourselves into the fabric of America while also letting our heritage and cultures shine. Both cultures, Indian and Russian-speaking, have so much to offer in terms of food, community, and talent. I think we both are here to pursue the American Dream and to build a strong foundation for all Americans. Like Bera’s own parents, of course many Russian-speaking people came to America as immigrants. As such, we are some of the most blessed peoples in this country. We truly have “The Best of two Worlds”. We bring strength of character to try to better our families, by each generation, and thus strengthen America. We are also blessed to have the opportunity in America to both assimilate and at the same time maintain the best of our cultures. And it is great to know that we are represented by a person that shares our values and understands our walks of life.

GoRedForWomen.org Движение the American Heart Association Go Red для женщин оказывает влияние на жизни женщин уже 10 лет. The American Heart Association Go Red для женщин национально спонсируется Macy’s. he American Heart Association Go Red для женщин и спонсор местной кампании Сакраменто Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute призывают женщин участвовать в кампании Go Red: одеваясь в красное, ведя здоровый образ жизни и распространяя знание о том, что порок сердца убивает наших матерей, дочерей, сестер и друзей.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

The People’s Senator By Dr. Florin J. Ciuriuc Slavic-American Community Leader

A strong patriot, a true American, a uniter, not a divider, and most of all, a man of faith and honor It was July of 2013. We were in Boise, Idaho for a friend’s wedding. w It was time to head back ba home to California when our ou nine-year-old son Josh decided decid to take one more loop around the block on his bike. We couldn’t object o knowing we had hours of driving ahead of us. But before we knew it, Josh was lying flat on a ground without any signs of life. He got into a bicycle accident severely damaging his internal organs. Within the next day Josh went through 5 ½ hours of surgery, with little hope to survive. We spent the next few days at the St. Luke Children’s hospital in Boise, devastated and scared. We were by Josh’s bedside talking to his I am deeply honored to doctor and nurses when the phone rang. It was have Senator Nielsen as Senator Jim Nielsen. We’ve done multiple community my mentor and friend projects together, yet he was the last person on earth I was expected to hear. Nielsen called to ask how Josh was doing. I’ve poured my heart out, sharing the doctor’s concerns and our deepest fears. Senator listened carefully, and then said, “My friend, Florin, please listen carefully. In prayers for Josh, I have spoken to our Lord Jesus. Please don’t worry. He will not die. He will be fine. He will recover. I will continue praying until you and your family come home safe”. This short story tells you a lot about a man of honor - Jim Nielsen. He is not just a politician. He is “THE PEOPLE’S SENATOR,” a man that cares about you and me. We first met over two decades ago at a community meeting. Our friendship has become stronger and stronger ever since. Senator Nielsen has become my mentor and my inspiration for leadership in the SlavicAmerican Community. Being a good friend of people in power, such as President Reagan himself, Nielsen has never forgotten about the common people.

Through his years of leadership at the California Capitol, Senator Nielsen has helped many ethnic and immigrant groups. He is convinced that we should have a chance to build better lives for our families in this land of opportunities. America is our new home and as new Americans we should stand together and act in the best interest of our community, our state and country. Personally, I followed Senator Nielsen’s example and dedicated the last twenty years of my life to representing my community. Just like my mentor, I have enjoyed serving other people with honesty, respect and care. Most newcomers in the Slavic community had my personal cellphone number that served as an ER for those in need or guidance or help. But when the time came for my own family to walk through the ‘Valley of death,’ it was Senator Nielsen’s phone call that gave us hope when we needed it most. The good Lord showed mercy on my family. Senator Nielsen’s prayer was heard and my son Josh is alive and well today. Of course Nielsen wasn’t the only person that was there for us. We are deeply thankful to all of our friends and family that were praying for Josh. However, to us that phone call from Senator Nielsen on Sunday afternoon was a message from God. It made us believe that everything could be all right again. My personal story serves as a testimony about a politician that cares about his people regardless of their nationalities, religion, and color. This is our Senator, and I am deeply honored to be represented by people like him in the State Assembly and Senate.

Senator Jim Nielsen presents Dr. Florin J. Ciuriuc with the State Assembly CertiďŹ cate of Recognition acknowledging his 20 years of serving the Russian-Speaking Community

"Our nine-year old son Josh was hanging by a thread ďŹ ghting for his life. It was the biggest test my family ever had to go through. Senator Nielsen's support gave us hope that God has not forsaken us and that Josh will make it through."

Building a Difference in a New Life

S

itting here at one of my favorite places reflecting on events of the past few years. I would never have guessed where God has taken me and is taking me. I'm traveling a lot these days, leading worship at an amazing church, I have songs on the radio and get to play those songs all over the country. I would never have guessed any of that was possible, let alone that I would be on a TV show; and one I used to watch while I was in school at that! October of last year I was on a plane headed to Chicago IL to see my brother that I had been searching for for the better part of twenty-two years. If my trip consisted of just that, I'd say, "That's a pretty cool story!" However, that wasn't the only reason...but still, a pretty awesome story but that'll wait for another article. The reason I was traveling was because I was contacted by the producers of a TV show shown all over the world that boasts a viewership well into the hundreds of millions. This show is aired on 30 networks. Among them are TLN, The Dove Channel, JCTV, KTLN, and the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). TBN alone broadcasts in well over 80 countries. The show is called Building a Difference. This show spotlights organizations and ministries that are quite literally building a difference in their communities and the world. I was contacted to possibly contribute music from Bradley Clark Band's new album Hold On, but as conversations continued, they wanted me to come out to experience the subject matter, meet some of the people they were profiling, and do a guest appearance on the show. Just being asked by any TV show is a huge honor and an accomplishment;

however this was a show that I watched when I didn't have cable and lamented at the fact that I'd never be good enough to do something like or be a part of what I was watching. When I was told of the mission of the ministry and the name of the ministry they were spotlighting, I was floored. Later, when I was asked to be a Co-Host and actually get to work on the show, I was evermore humbled and sank to my knees in praise. The subject of this five-and-one-half hour documentary which will be edited into the 14 episode series, features a ministry called New Life. This ministry takes in drug addicts who are at the end of their rope and over the course of fourteen months rehabilitates these people into productive citizens using biblical principles. New Life started in Russia and now has expanded to a beautiful 102 acre farm/cattle ranch in Cabool, Missouri that is worked by people who shouldn't have had a future, but by the grace of God, fearlessly look into a bright, faith-filled journey with a road as long as God desires. I flew into Chicago and my brother and I drove down to Missouri. When we arrived, all you had to do was to look around and see you were in God's country. Beautiful, peaceful land for as far as the eye can see. Earthy smells on fresh air as clean as you can imagine. When we drove up to the gate, I was immediately impressed with the stone work at the gate. Resting just to the left are the Ten Commandments chiseled on stone slab. The beauty in the architecture would rival anything shown on HGTV and to my surprise, just beyond the gate, is a stone bridge. We crossed, driving along the road we came to different buildings, each one simplistic in their design and beautiful in their foundations and accouterments.

This ministry is changing lives. I know it. I’ve witnessed it.

Going further along the road I spotted another gated dwelling. The gate reads HONEY OF NEW LIFE. Greeting you is another beautifully chiseled stone with a verse from Proverbs. This stone has come to be known as Roman's Rock. BCB's first radio single helps tell the story of Roman and how this rock came to be used in a video that can be found on the Building a Difference web site. I immediately felt connected with this place. Once inside the gates, the landscaping is truly a sight to behold. You are greeted with a cobblestone road which leads to a flat globe made from stones and pebbles. A beautiful mosaic showing how beautiful, big, and at the same time, small this planet really is. Go further, and you come to a small house. As you go to the door and turn, you find the reason for the name on the gate and this little house. This is where the honey is made courtesy of the bees and their keeper, a man named Uncle Leo. Uncle Leo is a world renowned bee keeper and donated his pension in order for this to be built. This enables the center to not only have one more skill for someone to learn, it also makes it possible for New Life to cultivate and sell fresh, organic honey to the locals and whom ever would like to order from around the world. However, honey isn't the only commodity New Life produces. From produce to beautiful hand made furniture, made by people that are turning their lives around by the grace and hand of God. What is incredible to me is my connection with this place. I graduated from a place called New Life Training Center which God used to save

my life. Now I am on a television show that I watched while going to school as I was walking in my "new life", with Bradley Clark Band's newest album 'Hold On' as the soundtrack, featuring a place that God is using to transform people and the world called New Life USA. It seems to me that we must Hold On and not give up in order to continue Building a Difference so that someone might just be saved and share their New Life as God has given it back to them. This is a wonderful ministry and I'm so honored to be able to be on the team that is telling their story. The premieres are set for spring and will be on the air directly following. This ministry is changing lives and I know this is true. I've witnessed it, I've gotten to know many at New Life and I'm proud of the work they do. Be on the look out for premiers in your area. If your church or organization would like to host a premiere, please contact Mick Richards at Info@BuildingaDifference.com .
