publisher’s note
MAKING US PROUD 10 years ago, I attended a Bible study group at the home of my friends, Rita and Slavik Stasyuk. One evening after we were done with the class, their teenage son, Mark, invited me into his room to show me his electric guitar skills. He was slamming the strings and his energy and passion made me smile and think that this young man could become a great musician or anything else he wanted to become. Last month, I attended Mark’s funeral along with a thousand other people including hundreds of uniformed personnel from across the state. Mark had become a police officer and was shot in the line of duty. That young man, that I once knew, had grown up to became a hero. He showed us what the police uniform stands for: courage, loyalty, and the commitment to sacrifice it all in an effort to protect others. There are hundreds of thousands of young, second generation, Slavic Americans like Mark in our community. Young people that don’t take the opportunities offered by this great country for granted. They chase their dreams, graduate from universities, excel at their careers, and open their own businesses. When I look at my daughter, Tanya, coming home from medical school, and when I think of Mark and the great sacrifice he made, I take pride in the great, young men and women that we managed to raise. These are the kind of people this magazine is published for. You are our pride and joy. We are honored to serve you and take pride in the great accomplishments you make in our community!

What is your idea of a beauty queen?
In my mind, this title has always conjured up images of a fairy tale princess but after meeting Anna Petrova, Miss Russian California 2018, another comparison seems more fitting - Wonder Woman.
She has visited 24 countries, opened a dance studio in Rio de Janeiro, learned Portuguese in 3 months, received official recognition from LA City Hall for her work as a TV host, earned membership in the National Honor Society of Entertainment Arts, won the US West Coast Fred Astaire Ballroom Championship and started working as a professional dancer at Pasadena Symphony and Pops. In just one year, she earned two titles: Miss Russian LA & Miss Russian California. She has also started her own jewelry line - Anna Petrova Magnetic. And this impressive list of achievements is far from being complete. Anna has accomplished all this and more through perseverance, hard work and ingenuity! Such self-made individuals inspire us to reach new heights…

Anna’s life story is incredibly impressive. She grew up as a girl from an ordinary, Russian family with humble means to become a successful businesswoman who, business on top of all her other achievements, has earned the title of Miss Russian Californian 2018.
What is the secret to such remarkable success?
photo by: Igor Ilyenko | coolstyle.us
When you love what you do, you never have to make yourself do it. It may seem that I have enormous willpower but, in reality, I have always chosen to pursue what I enjoy and what interests enj me. Plus, I have been a dreamer since I was a little girl! If you follow your dreams, set goals, keep persevering despite obstacles, you will undoubtedly make your undoub dreams come true.
What achievement are you most proud of?
During her last swimming lesson, my three year old daughter was swimming almost entirely by herself. I am so proud of her! It’s odd but I don’t have an enormous sense of pride over my big successes. It’s really the small, achievements that are daily achie somehow more precious.
What moment in your life ended up becoming a turning point?
It was in 2009 and Russia was suffering the aftermath of an economic crisis. The quality of my modelling work dropped from fashion sessions and grand shows to promo work as a Snow Maiden in a pub named “The Mug”. I had just broken up with my boyfriend, b moved out of my rented apartment and moved back in with my mom in Yasenevo (a Moscow district). I was sitting in dreary morning, bumper-to-bumper traffic and math: this stop-and-go doing the m traffic was robbing me of four hours a day! How much is that in a week? In a month? What about in a year? I remember, very vividly, the moment when I burst out in tears and made the decision to leave. I was aware that there is le traffic everywhere but I was longing for sunlit traffic and a new adventure.
You studied dance in New York before moving to LA. You even lived in Brazil and opened a dance studio there. You continued your journey and left for journ Hong Kong. Do you like moving around or was it a search of self or an attempt to reach your potential? Where else would you like to live?
That was a search for self. When we run from a certain place, we are often running from ourselves. I was running away from my ‘Moscow-self’, then from my ‘California-self’, then from my ‘Brazil-self’ when I ended up in Kong. It was there that I Hong Kon realized that I was ready to make internal rather than external changes. By then, I had been a master of my own schedule for so long that I felt the longing for structure and the desire to continue my
education. I enrolled in lm school and headed back to the classroom. This started the transformation process that began from the inside out. Now I’m convinced that it’s possible to begin a life in any big city given that you are comfortable with th yourself. That’s why I am no longer in a hurry to run away again.
Los Angeles, just like New York, for that matter, is a city you either love or hate. What do you like about LA and do you miss Moscow?
Los Angeles has opportunities to t any lifestyle – from the healthiest, with all the latest developments in rejuvenation and detox, to the most self-indulgent, Hollywood-style hedonism with daily parties, illegal gaming and social events in e the homes of celebrities. You can choose whatever lifestyle suits you best. I love the fact that I can enjoy outdoor activities all year long: hiking, swimming, beach activities and yoga under the open sky. s I do miss the lack of familiar culture that is so dear to the Russian soul. When I am back in Moscow, I always try to catch up by going to the theater, expositions, museums, poem reading events and interesting lectures. le
Finish the following phrase: Being a real woman means…
Accepting and loving ourselves and paying attention to our inner self. Then, out of the abundance of love for ourselves, we must care for that and for those that surround us. Being in harmony with ourselves and accepting all of our different roles will allow us di to enjoy life to the fullest and will inspire others along the way.
What really makes you happy?
Dancing, music, time with family and friends, humor, irting, traveling and the realization of how lucky I am in life

How to Invest
like Warren Buffett?
Warren Buffett’s name is practically synonymous with his success. He is the third wealthiest person in the world with a net worth of 90.2 billion dollars. Learn his tips on making great investments and how to identify the best opportunities that are currently available on the market.
The bitcoin craze over the past year garnered a lot of attention from investors. The massive 1,470% increase in bitcoin’s price during 2017 caused a “gold rush” atmosphere with people taking out second mortgages and cashing in retirement funds to purchase the cryptocurrency. Bitcoin growth, however, is far from best return on investment (ROI) in the tech sector. Take, for instance, the story of David Cheriton, the Stanford professor who invested $100K in Google. His stock was worth more than $1 billion by 2012 – a ROI of over one million percent .
So, the billion-dollar question is, how does one identify opportunities where the ROI may be measured in tens of thousands of percentages and additionally, are there still such opportunities available in today’s marketplace? 26
RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE
David Choe, a high school dropout turned graffiti artist, enjoyed an even higher ROI on the $60K worth of painting services he provided to Facebook in exchange for its stock in 2005. The equity he received was worth $200 million when Facebook went public in 2012, $500 million in 2013 and is worth more than $1 billion now, an increase of over 1.6 million percent. Amazon's stock has risen 49,000% since it first went public. A $5,000 investment in the online retailer in 1997 would be worth $2.4 million today while the return on investment for the first preIPO Amazon investors has reached a dazzling SEVEN MILLION PERCENT.
The answer is YES!

Alex Konanykhin, one of the heroes of past issues of Russian Time Magazine, is the owner of the cloud-based platform, TransparentBusiness, which has more than 9,000 clients in more than 100 countries across the globe. Companies like Google, Ebay, Boeing, Sony, Intel and CNN are using TransparentBusiness technology that helps to digitize the work process, making working in the cloud transparent, efficient and accountable for people and companies.
As CEO of TransparentBusiness with its current valuation of $100M, Alex Konanykhin argues that the ROI in their current $25 million round of financing may exceed 90,000%*! HERE ARE 5 FACTORS THAT MAKE THEIR EXPLOSIVE GROWTH ACHIEVABLE: A huge market: There is a massive amount of remote, computerbased work performed in today’s economy and TransparentBusiness’s platform increases productivity of such work by 15-40% Key partnerships: TransparentBusiness is distributed through the tech giant ADP which handles payroll processing for much of Corporate America. TransparentBusiness has also secured partnerships with Google, Microsoft, SAP, Cisco, Facebook and EY.
Experienced team: TransparentBusiness is led by internationally acclaimed entrepreneurs. Government support: Several states are considering a program to mandate transparent verification of billable hours for government contractors. TransparentBusiness is best positioned to seize most of the resulting market.
"Successful investing takes time, discipline and patience. No matter how great the talent or effort, some things just take time: You can't produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant." Warren Buffett
A robust solution: TransparentBusiness has been designated as a “Top People Management Solution” by Citigroup
Of course, there are many more interesting and unique projects on the market that can yield a high ROI in the long term. However, it is worth remembering Warren Buffett’s main rule: Invest in what you know and nothing more! You don’t need to be a rocket scientist because investing is not a game where the guy with the 160 IQ beats the guy with the 130 IQ. Beware of self-proclaimed “gurus” selling you a hands-off, rules-based system of investing. If such a system actually existed, the owner certainly wouldn’t have a need to sell books or subscriptions. And don’t forget that investments always involve risk so any investment decision must follow a due diligence process which includes a review of all risk factors.
*As per Rule 506(c) set by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the opportunity to invest in TransparentBusiness is restricted to so-called “accredited investors” , i.e. individuals with a net worth of over one million dollars or an annual income over $200,000.

RED VELVET CREPE CAKE Servings:

Prep Time:
60 min
Cook Time:
30 min
Difficulty Level:
Beginner
Get yourself ready for the most stunning, festive crepe cake ever! Serve this at any holiday gathering, special occasion or celebration to ‘wow’ your guests! Every bite of this crepe cake is light, airy and absolutely delicious. It’s not too sweet so you can truly enjoy a large slice of this epic cake and not feel overwhelmed!
INGREDIENTS • 6 large eggs, room temperature • 2 3/4 cup (650 ml) milk, lukewarm • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chocolate liqueur • 1/3 cup (75 g) butter, melted • 2 1/2 cups (325 g) all-purpose flour • 1 tsp vanilla extract • pinch of salt • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder • gel red food coloring
• • • • • •
For Filling: 3 cups (710 ml) heavy cream, chilled 1 cup (125 g) confectioner's sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 8 oz (227 g) cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup (175 g) white chocolate chips, melted
INSTRUCTIONS 1 Prepare the crepes first. The easiest method for preparing a smooth, lump-free batter is to use a blender. If you don't have one, a mixer will also work well. Place all the ingredients for the crepe batter into the blender and mix for 2 to 3 minutes until the batter is smooth. Add enough red food coloring to make the batter bright red. Allow the batter to rest for a few minutes, then prepare the crepes. 2 As the crepes are cooling, prepare the whipped cream frosting. Pour the heavy cream into a stand mixer bowl and add the sugar and vanilla extract. Whisk on medium-high speed for 4 to 5 minutes, until stiff peaks form and the cream holds its shape. In a separate bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and softened butter for a few minutes, until mixture is smooth. Pour in the melted white chocolate and beat again on high speed for 2 to 3 minutes, until the mixture is smooth and creamy. 30

Whisk on high speed for 30 seconds to a minute, just until stiff peaks form. 4 To assemble the cake, spread a generous amount of frosting between each crepe, layering evenly and spreading the frosting to the edges to ensure that the cake stays level. Garnish the top with melted white chocolate, berries and any remaining frosting. 5 Allow the cake to set in the refrigerator for an hour or two before cutting and serving. This cake can be made ahead of time, up to 3 days. Keep refrigerated.

As the temperatures outside dip below freezing, it’s easy to dub winter the dreariest season of all. But the colder months don’t have to be spent hidden under blankets.
Fairbanks, Alaska
Lisbon, Portugal
Fairbanks is a particularly ideal place to view the Northern Lights, with cloud-free nights and a lengthy aurora season.
Soak in the culture, and get lost in the culinary scene and nightlife. In the area around Lisbon you can also go surfing all year long.
In fact, we’d argue that some of our favorite cities become even better in winter. Think fewer crowds, lower hotel rates, and dreamy snow globe scenes.
Park City, Utah This former Olympic city is undeniably one of the country's top winter sports destinations, with ample opportunities for skiing, fly fishing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding

Despite the "overnight" success stories you read about in glossy business magazines, the overwhelming majority of successful businesses take years, if not decades, to build. It's never easy. photo by: Igor Ilyenko | coolstyle.us
Entrepreneurs often ride a roller coaster of highs and lows that feel even more intense because they're running the show. Steve Jobs once said, "I'm convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance." We asked a few highly successful people to share their advice for other entrepreneurs going through a rough patch. Here's what they shared.

Every business owner has their own principles on which they build the business. For me, the key principles are efficient time management, attention to detail, ardent representation of each client, and time, love and care for self and family. So, passion for the work, compassion, patience, and self-care are the guideposts of success.
My grandmother once said, “Lena, never think that you are the best, otherwise you will have nowhere to grow”. This advice has guided me to this day. And yet, if you want to become number one in your field, then you need to love what you do, create a cohesive team around you, and give each client the best service. We value our customers above everything else!
Have a general career path in mind, build relationships along that path, and be willing to accept challenges even if it seems they may lead you down a different path. Being an entrepreneur means taking responsibility for everything that happens in your business. And yet we must remember that the best advertising is satisfied customers!
"Do your duty without thinking of outcome; do your duty, whether it will bring you happiness or misfortune” (Omar Khayyam). The utmost dedication and love for your work are the main components of a successful leader. Just enthusiasm and inspiration are not enough. Without professionalism and competence in your field, it is simply impossible to work effectively. I wish all entrepreneurs would devote themselves to their business and serve everybody with excellence and passion.
As entrepreneurs, we work 100-hour weeks and get little thanks. So we have to be clear about our "why." If we can’t think of anything else we would rather be doing with our time, then what we are doing today is right. We need to dedicate ourselves to what we are working towards and set up ambitious goals consistently and ultimately meeting those goals. Remembering, if we don’t know where we are headed, we will end up someplace other than our intended goals.

Top Marketing Strategy: CARE! The main point is do not focus on competitors; focus on your customer. First, concentrate on what you can do for them, and last – what you can get from them. You have to provide value to your target audience before you ask anything. Use social media to boost your results. Be creative and open for experiments in digital marketing.
Each client appreciates competence, efficiency, and punctuality. That is why your company should be focused on compliance with all of these three principles. Also, being a leader of the company means that your actions should inspire others to dream more, to learn more, to work more and to become better. Being a great example for your team will help you to create the most powerful and successful company ever!
First of all, you need to decide who are you: a leader or follower? A true leader influences others to be their best. And if you want to run a successful company, then you must motivate people to do more than they ever thought possible in pursuit of a greater good. Also, never forget, that any leader has periods when failures happen. Going through those tough moments can be hard, but if you surround yourself with positive people who inspire you, then every goal will be achievable!
Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there. This is the main rule that helped me to succeed in my business. I worked hard and I have always been happy to accept all event designer opportunities: both large and small. Each client wants fast, highquality and professional service, so the task of every entrepreneur is to be head and shoulders above its competitors.
Respect all of your clients and partners. This should be the number one rule in your business. It is impossible to develop a large and prosperous company without that. Another criterion for success is knowing your business from A to Z. Every CEO should understand all the processes in the company and hear the opinion of each employee. This approach allows us to be in the top ten of the transportation services market.

“Happiness is not all about money.” This is a famous Russian saying and it often characterizes the attitude of the Slavic culture towards money.
On one hand, we are known for our generosity and open souls. However, on the other hand, we often neglect to prepare for tomorrow. Instead, most people prefer to live in the moment. This is a predominant attitude of many immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
When business is going well, we tend to buy luxury cars, expensive-brand clothes, and vacation at expensive resorts. Not many people choose to think about the future and plan for a “rainy day”. These two things represent the difference between American and Slavic cultures. Americans believe that success isn’t measured by the amount of money that you have in your account now, but how well you manage your finances and how much money you have for your future needs (i.e. emergencies, opportunities, and retirement). Unfortunately, even nowadays, Slavic people believe several myths related to investments and insurance. To dispel them, I decided to turn to one of the top professionals in this field. My expert is Vlad Donets, Risk Management Advisor with Solera Asset Managers, a company which helps its customers increase their financial assets by managing almost two billion dollars.
photo by: Inna Stiblina; on photo: Vlad Donets, Risk Management Advisor, Lily Gensitskiy, Operations Specialist Daryl T. Seaton, Founder & Managing Director Slava Palamarchuk, Risk Management Advisor
This is a very common myth which I gladly refute. We have clients who invest millions, but we also have those who can afford to invest only $200 a month. A modest amount of cash set aside at regular intervals can result in a big nest egg upon retirement. At our firm, we recommend saving at least 15% of your net income which will eventually turn into significant savings. Consider this example, a person who is making $50,000 a year and setting aside 15% of his income for 35 years will end up with $1,400,000.* Everyone must start somewhere, and if one wants to retire wealthy, one needs to start by saving in small amounts first. After that, experts recommend paying bills next and then purchasing luxuries last. Most of my successful clients prefer to maintain the same freedom of choice after they officially retire. Some of them are working until the age of 70 or 80. However, it’s not because they must but rather it’s because they want to. Retiring early is not their main goal. A much better goal is to enjoy life knowing that you have protected your family and yourself from the “rainy days” at any given point of life.
This myth is very popular until people actually retire. I have never had a person in my office who said they really needed less money after age 65. The sad truth is that 2/3 of Americans reach retirement without any savings. Every client wants two things: 1) to have enough money for the next 2030 years and 2) to minimize their tax payments. When the Social Security System was created in 1935, for each retiree there were 40 working people. Now, according to the latest statistics, there are only three working people for every retiree. By 2030, there will be only two workers for every retiree. Social Security in its current structure is financially unsustainable and is doomed for a major failure. The government will have to make changes to the Social Security system, whether by increasing the eligible age to receive benefits or by increasing taxes. If the choice is made to increase taxes, say you earn $50,000 per year and pay 18% taxes, in a few years this figure may increase to 50%. This example illustrates our need to plan for retirement as soon as possible.
This myth can be very deceptive. Although a person may understand simple math, that knowledge may not help them to understand all the details associated with investing. There are so many risk factors to consider: inflation, market risk, taxes, new laws, and other fees. If the investor wants to avoid these risks, then they must constantly update their strategies that are being used. Did you know that today’s taxes are the lowest in recent history? If my financial plan does not factor in future tax increases, then how can I expect to receive one amount or another? That is why we, at Solera Asset Managers, consider all the factors we possibly can to satisfy our client’s expectations now as well as in the future.
Managing money wisely is a full-time job which takes experts with significant experience and skill!
*Investing $7,500 a year compounding at 8% for 35 years will equal $1,400,000. Past Performance is no guarantee of future performance. Investment returns will fluctuate based on investment risk. Results will vary and may be worth more or less than their original costs, including possible loss of principal invested. SOLERA’S Approach
6 components which make up our approach:
· Our Transparency · Our Efforts to Keep You Informed · Our Investment Philosophy
Every time a client tells me that life insurance is too expensive, I reply that it’s too expensive not to have it. When you scroll through your Facebook feed, it is common to see fundraising posts. I wish I could have helped those people before their tragedy occurred. For a 30-35 years old person who earns $50,000 a year, life insurance will cost around $40 to $50 a month with $1,200,000 of coverage. Is that too expensive?
The problem is that many buyers look for life insurance online and get confused with so many options. Often, it is hard to find the perfect plan that will satisfy all of your needs. That is why I strongly recommend getting help from a professional before deciding which type of life insurance is best for you and your family. Finally, purchasing life insurance makes the most sense when you’re young since the premiums are less expensive and you have fewer assets to pass on to heirs. For example, I bought a life insurance policy for my son who is one month old. Also, if you choose the best plan with the help of a professional advisor, then it can be a great part of your investment strategy.
· Our Understanding of Expenses & Taxes · Our Understanding of Financial Discipline · Our View on Risk Management
A famous quote from John Rockefeller is, “The major fortunes in America have been made in land.” A wise saying. But if you invest all your money in one source, then you need to accept all the risks that come with it; just remember the crisis that happened in 2008-2009. Many people lost their properties and ended up in bankruptcy. Another myth is that you should invest only in businesses. Do you know that statistically, eight out of ten businesses fail in the first five years? If you want to become a successful investor, then remember the main rule: you need to stick with diversification. Diversification is the fancy name for: don’t put all your eggs in one basket. We recommend having at least six or seven areas where you invest money. Diversification will help you avoid the worst of the financial market’s ups and downs. With enough variety in your portfolio, you will usually own some investments that are in favor even while others may be performing poorly.

What caused you to enter the fashion world and when did you realize that it would become your vocation?
What are the top 3 projects that you will always remember?
Do you have a style icon and if so, who is it?
What book would you advise everyone to read?
Since childhood, my grandma cultivated a passion in me for the arts by taking me to exhibitions, theatres and concerts. I was fascinated by it all. In school, I dressed informally and often broke the school uniform rules. As a teenager, I assisted makeup artists and later, I worked in television. I was the host of TV fashion projects, attended fashion weeks, and studied at Istitutto Marangoni, where I participated in advanced courses. I am so thankful for one photographer who got me involved in the styling industry five years ago. Presently, I’m primarily working in online personal shopping with women around the world and sorting out their wardrobes and conducting training sessions.
Photo shoots with world famous models. Unfortunately, I do not have the legal right to use these pictures in my portfolio. Fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Kiev granted me the opportunity to reach the highest levels in the industry and they opened doors to the fashion world’s backstage. Also, photo shoots with Istitutto Marangoni, in London, were very exciting. Having the opportunity to shoot for a magazine cover is exhilarating.
I have my muses, not icons. They change periodically; life does not stand still. I’m inspired by female ‘rough diamonds’. With their unique style, different nationalities, they are free and authentic, real women whose clothing is their self-expression. I like boho, gypsy, industrial and masculine styles.
What fact about you would surprise your parents?
My spiritual path. I meditate, exercise holotropic breathing and other different practices. I experienced clinical death, lucid dreams, and other paranormal things. I try not to go into these topics when speaking with my parents as they get too emotional and are not ready to hear this.
Did you have to make some sacrifice to move to Bali?
Personal communication with my grandparents. It was the only important and sacrificial decision for me. The rest was easy.

Both were involved in operations as they were growing up; they even helped their parents while going to college. In 2014, cancer unexpectedly claimed the life of their mother, Marina, who was the heart and soul of the company. Coping with this devastated tragedy, the family was faced with a huge challenge, whether to close down the business or find a way to restructure operations. Two brave girls, supported by their father, Igor, stepped in and took over the company. Not only did they manage to stay in
business but they also brought it to a whole new level, claiming the Best Catering Company Award in 2017. When asked what they like the most about being in business, the girls both replied that it is first of all a tribute to their mother. Citrus Plaza Catering had been the work of her life and the ladies are proud to carry on and expand on their mother’s dream.
