“Hawaii — I should’ve gone to Hawaii.” This though was pounding in my head as I was standing in the parking lot of the Keflavík International Airport at 5 o’clock in the morning. My chief editor talked me into trading my usual winter getaway to Hawaii for a photo reporting trip to Iceland. “It will be fun,” she said...
S
o there I was, pierced with a 50 mph wind, shivering in the cold air with the temperature dipping way below freezing. I tried not to slip on the sheer layer of ice which covered the sidewalks as I made my way towards the rental car terminal. The conversation with the rental car clerk reinforced my regrets. I’ve learned of a hundred ways I could die in Iceland as he was trying to sell me overpriced travel insurance. “Should’ve gone to Hawaii,” I told myself once again as I was leaving the airport in a budget rental car. The next six days in this land of paradox proved me wrong. It turned out to be one of the brightest adventures of my life. I got to climb the largest glacier in Europe, explore crystal ice caves, and watch the Northern Lights set the sky on fire. I tried some incredible food and met some amazing people from different parts of the world. The number of tourists visiting Iceland last year reached almost 2 million. This wasn’t the

RAIN case a few decades ago. I met with the family who opened one of the first tour operating companies back in the 80’s. Their idea seemed absurd at the time since tourism was almost nonexistent. Today their company is one of the largest tour operators in the country. In the same manner, a college student majoring in computer science saw a business opportunity in the midst of economic turmoil that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. When everyone else was trying to flee the country, he realized that economic changes presented great opportunities for foreign investors. Together with a group of friends he opened a travel agency that toured foreign investors around Russia. Their idea was well received and soon the agency was serving clients worldwide. Several decades later that young man became a reputable venture capitalist who helps businesses from all over the world get a foot in the door of the Silicon Valley. photo by: OlhaPhotography.com

Northern Lights The Aurora Borealis is a spectacular light show with distinctive glowing lights dancing across the night sky. This unique natural wonder is one of the top attractions most visitors wish to experience while in Iceland. The best chance to see the lights when the aurora activity is high is when it is cold, dark and the sky is clear. There are lots of tours that offer Aurora Excursions. Since northern lights is a natural phenomenon which is impossible to predict, most excursions pledge to take you again on a free tour in case if you don’t see the lights the first time around. Smaller tours with offroad jeeps or mini-vans generally get better reviews than large tour buses, as small tours tend to be less crowded and more personal. In contrast, the summertime is marked by the “midnight sun”, a natural phenomenon when the sun does not fully set at all, creating a mysterious lasting twilight during the night. THINK TWICE BEFORE BOOKING A HOTEL Booking a hotel is the first thing you’d be tempted to do when planning your trip to Iceland. Most tourists reserve their entire hotel accommodations in Reykjavik, the capital city which offers lots of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Big mistake. While Reykjavik is definitely the best place to stay while in Iceland, most top adventures including glaciers, ice caves, waterfalls, and geysers are located on the South side of the island, some 450 km away from the capital. If you are interested in exploring the best of Iceland you would need to spend a night or two away from the capital. Plan your adventures first, then make your hotel reservations. Chances are you will need to book several different accommodations.
EXPERIENCE BLUE LAGOON GEOTHERMAL SPA Due to active volcanic activity, Iceland relies on geothermal energy — water heated by the flowing lava underground. This creates lots of natural hot springs all around the island. Many pools have been turned into public swimming pools or day spas, with the most famous one being the Blue Lagoon. The island is situated on active volcanos which explain natural wonder of geothermal hot pools that can be found all over the country. TAKE A TOUR TO A CRYSTAL ICE CAVE During the winter, glacier rivers form a mesmerizing natural phenomenon called crystal blue ice caves. The caves vary in shape and size with some of them large enough to fit dozens of people. Standing inside an ice cave feels like finding yourself in the center of a crystal ball. It’s an adventure not to be missed since there are very few places on the planet which offer such an amazing experience. Since caves are hidden in the guts of the glaciers, you can only access them by booking a guided tour. You can choose an easy tour where you’d be taken to a cave on an off-road vehicle, or go extreme and hike or climb the glacier to get to a cave. Nevertheless, having your own means of transportation is definitely worth it. A visit to Iceland is not complete without a drive along the island or at least to the south shore. Glaciers, ice caves, and animal farms are all located on the southeast side of the country which is a good five hour drive from Reykjavik. Some companies include a coach bus and a hotel room in the price of their glacier tours, but this way you miss lots of fun stops along the way. Rent a car if you can. The roads in Iceland are great and there is barely any traffic. Buy a data card for your smartphone at the airport and use it as a navigation device. Make rental reservations and buy insurance ahead of time as the prices at the site grow exponentially.

You have held high level executive positions with some of the most auent Tech companies in the world. Why did you decide to jump o the corporate wagon and go back to the private sector?
What are the main qualities of a successful entrepreneur?
Silicon Valley has a unique, open-minded environment. It reminds of a giant international market of creative minds, ground-breaking ideas, and technologies. It encourages people with great potential and investors with vast capital to get together and make great things happen. My career with Microsoft and Adobe Systems gave me an invaluable experience and provided a unique insight into the internal workings of a corporate machine. If you succeed in a corporate world, your decisions are justified. If you miscalculate and make a mistake you take a big blow. Corporate structure makes the decision process extremely difficult and risky because one mistake can launch a chain reaction that would affect the entire organization. I am a risk-taker. What I like about the private sector is the ability to make my own decisions and bear responsibility for the outcome.
An entrepreneur by definition is someone who has the ability to make strategic decisions in a constantly changing, uncertain environment. A corporate officer may postpone a decision and delegate or share responsibilities; an entrepreneur needs to act fast. The ability to make decisions fast and bear responsibility for the outcome are musts for any successful entrepreneur.
How did you earn your starting capital?
Did anyone you met during those times leave a lasting impression on you?
Some people are concerned with the rapid development of robotics and artificial intelligence. What is your take on global robotization and AI?
Oh… It was back in my college years during the 90’s, right after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was the most outrageous time in the history of Russia, with economic turmoil, sky-rocking crime rates, mobs, corruption, you name it. My friends and I decided to open a travel agency that would cater to foreigners visiting Russia. Since I was fluent in English I was a private tour guide for lots of fascinating business people who dared to visit Russia during that criminallyromantic era. A few years later our travel agency became a large tour operator, carrying out charter flights and partnering with hundreds of foreign companies all over the world.
I met lots of interesting people during those days but one of them impressed me the most. It was a retired executive of General Motors. He came to Russian at his own expense to provide free consulting services to the Russian automaker “GAZ”. I was deeply struck by the fact that a person was willing to travel to a foreign country at his own expense and share his knowledge and experience for free to benefit our auto industry.
Does your close encounter with technology and AI affect the way you raise your three children? Would you encourage them to get a career in tech?
I strongly believe that children should be allowed to choose for themselves when it comes to their hobbies and career choice. That’s what my parents did when I was a child. I was involved in a great number of activities and sports as a kid, anything from chess to horseback riding, and my parents always allowed me to choose what I wanted to do. I find this a great parental strategy because it helps children develop in their areas of strength.
How do you see the future of cryptocurrency? Is it going to last?
Absolutely! Traditional currencies are outdated and do not meet current market needs. They’re inconvenient for micropayments, create difficulties in international transactions, and are influenced by political factors, to name just a few issues. Cryptocurrencies will solve all of these problems and more. So far, its biggest flaw is volatility (instability) but it is only a matter of time until this matter is solved.
What is the most extreme thing you have ever done?
I have been on the barricades of three revolutions, two in Russia, in 1991 and 1993, and one in Ukraine during the Orange Revolution in 2004. But perhaps the most extreme thing I have ever tried was an expedition I did as a kid to the Arctic Circle on the Kola Peninsula. The conditions were extreme, it was so cold that I got frostbite on my fingers, nose, and ears. I was severely dehydrated and utterly tired. I was only 14 years old at the time. This expedition taught me to push myself beyond my limits and survive in extreme conditions. It was the best training for my character and willpower.
One of the main concerns over robotics is that it may revolutionize the workplace, taking over some of the jobs traditionally held by humans. I believe that evolution of AI is a great thing that could spare people from hollow routine work and allow them to engage in more meaningful jobs that help to realize one’s full potential.
