The first rule of each printed publication is to know your target audience. For example, ELLE targets women, GQ serves men, while COSMOPOLITAN aims at rebellious teenagers. You can’t go wrong with fashion and beauty for the ladies, success tips for men, or new treads and travel destinations for teens. It wasn’t that simple for us. Russian Time serves the entire Slavic community in the US. We had to come up with our own strategy. And so we did. Our goal is to provide you with a unique publication which has something interesting for everyone. We want this to be the magazine which you keep on your coffee table and share with your family and friends. We want you to find value on the pages of this publication, whether you’re a businessman, a stay at home mom, or an aspiring teenager. We want to make you our loyal reader, and we go above and beyond and to make it happen! Enjoy!

GOD HAS

A SENSE OF HUMOR I was raised in a family of highly educated people. My grandfather was an engineer in charge of the entire railroad communication system in Uzbekistan. My aunt was a doctor, running the biggest hospital in my hometown. My father was a doctor of mathematical science, heading one of the largest scientific institutes in the country.

From an early age I was taught to use logic to make sense of the world around me. As I grew older, I realized that some things are pretty hard to rationalize. Sometimes the universe aligns so perfectly, that things happen at a perfect time for a perfect reason. My grandfather used to call that a coincidence. I’ve learned to call those miracles. One of such miracles always makes me smile when i think about it.

It happened a week before Christmas several years ago. I was getting ready for a charity event we put together for underprivileged children every holiday season. It was quite a big endeavor, as we served kids from all the major foster care organizations, children receiving homes, and shelters for women and children in our city. Our goal was to make a lasting difference in lives of those kids, making them feel loved and cared for. Children enjoyed a red carpet experience with greetings from Disney characters and Santa, a festive dinner sponsored by Chickfil-A and Texas Roadhouse, a special holiday program, and a personalized Christmas present.

THINGS HAPPEN AT A PERFECT TIME FOR A PERFECT REASON

Sergey Ivannikov Page sergey_ivannikov sergeyivannikov @RAMceo

In order to bring hundreds of foster kids to one location we partnered up with Baylight Limousine & Transportation, who brought on board all the major limousine and transportation companies in the city. Children were picked up by luxurious limousines, which brought them to the event location and took them around holiday lights displays afterwards. That particular year the event got so popular, that we exceeded our capacity by several hundred children. My good friend, Frank Gayaldo, was helping me with transportation logistics. The limousines were at full capacity when I got an unexpected phone call. It was the director of a program for children with special needs. She was asking me to add 20 more children with disabilities to our event. I knew we were spreading thin, but I couldn’t turn those kids away. I knew that I put Frank into an impossible situation. “I want to serve those children more than anything,” he said, “but we could barely find enough transportation for the ones that already signed up. How are we going to provide transportation for more kids?” I had no solutions to our problem, so I said the only thing that comes to mind when I am desperate, “Jesus will provide,” I said and then I prayed. Frank, not being big on religion, left puzzled to look for more limos. Right as I said Amen, my phone rang again. It was Frank. “Sergey, you won’t believe what just happened! Jesus called! We have two more limo buses!” Even as a strong believer, it took me a minute to process this. Turns out, that the owner of Royal Party Bus company from Stockton, Jesus Gomez, heard about our event and decided to contribute. He called Frank to see if we needed more help, just as I was praying for a miracle. The timing couldn’t be more perfect! Sometimes it takes one person willing to do one good thing to make something impossible happen, to make a miracle. So let’s be kind to one another, let’s help each other one simple act of kindness at a time. You never know when you can become somebody else’s miracle.

KSENIIA ANIKUSHYNA The name Kseniia, in the Greek translation, means a wanderer or a foreigner. Maybe that’s why our featured guest has dreamed of traveling around the world since childhood. Five years ago, Kseniia arrived in the U. S. and realized that she didn’t want to leave this country. She was not only able to realize that goal but she has also been honored with the title of

Miss Russian California! by Olga Garicichina

Beauty without a soul is just a shell

photo credit: Olha Melokhina olhaphotography makeup & hair: Evgenya Vitcova evgenyapromakeup fashion stylist: Elena Shishkin showroombyelenashishkin

Kseniia was born and raised in Ukraine. She worked at a children’s theater for seven years and has two bachelor’s degrees. She was always fascinated by the fashion industry, artistic performances, make-up, music and photography. She graduated from modeling school, participated in fashion shows, starred in advertising campaigns, and won various competitions. Now, Kseniia is working towards a master’s degree and continues to work in the fashion and beauty industry. In just two months, she earned three major titles: Miss Russian San Diego, Miss Russian California, and Second Vice Miss Russian USA. On top of that, Kseniia received official recognition from the President of the California State Senate for her contribution to the preservation and development of Russian Culture in society.

Kseniia, tell us what brought you to the U. S. and why you chose to stay. I’ve loved traveling and exploring countries since childhood. My first visit to the United States was part of the Work and Travel student program, and back then, I almost immediately realized that I wanted to live in this country. After that, I returned home, graduated from university, got my student visa, and flew back here two years later. Now I’m studying to get a Master’s degree from San Diego University in Integrative Studies. During this period, I have visited Boston, Rehoboth Beach, Chicago, and Seattle. I have been living in San Diego for the last two and a half years. I really enjoy this city located in the sunny state of California. What made you take part in the Miss Russian California pageant? What did you achieve by participating and winning it?

brought almost no rest for 45 days. I spent a night on a bus to Sacramento each weekend followed by a day of training and another night on a bus to be back at school the next morning. Despite all that, it was an extremely worthwhile and exciting experience. The preparation process was exceptionally exhilarating. The pageant allowed me to express myself, discover my true potential, and boost my confidence. I made a few friends and was overwhelmed with positive emotions. Participating in pageants has been an important part of my life. You strive for something greater and have people to look up to as your role models. I want to thank the organizers, sponsors, committee members, and everyone who was involved. I have already tried myself in the role of coach and the event host. Also, I was a member of the jury at the contest Miss Russian San Francisco, Missis Russian America, and Miss Eastern Europe. There’s something special in the air that makes the world better when such wonderful, progressive, and motivated people come together!

Winning this pageant made me realize I needed to move forward

This was not the first beauty pageant I have participated in. Taking part in such pageants provide unique experiences. When I originally moved to the U.S., I didn’t even think of participating in pageants, but when I moved to San Diego, that all changed. I once again began to delve into modeling and photography and took part in the Russian Miss San Diego-2018 pageant. This was the first step towards my victory. Winning this pageant made me realize I needed to move forward. My next step was Miss Russian California 2019 and I hoped to win from the very beginning. The journey

What does success mean to you? For me, success is, first and foremost, self-fulfillment and self-development. It’s when you believe in yourself and can achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. It’s when you have your favorite job, friends, family, and the person you love. The main thing is to go forward, set goals, and achieve them; move forward despite your fears and problems. Then you will achieve success!

How did the quarantine and epidemic affect you? I think that the Covid-19 breakout and the quarantine have affected all of us. My studies went online, gyms are closed, there are no shows and virtually no photo sessions. It’s not particularly pleasant but you can still explore something, educate yourself, or do some soul searching during the quarantine. I’m interested in jewelry, so right now, I’m working on my own jewelry line. This project allows me to explore my artistic and creative potential while developing the most efficient designer solutions. It also deepens my understanding of fashion, history, culture, and modern trends. I hope that the world will go back to the way it was and it will all work out for the best! I think that the world is a wonderful place, and we should rejoice in the positive rather than dwell on the negative! What situation influenced you the most and changed you as a person? Since moving to the States, I’ve changed a lot. Before that, I lived with my parents, was naïve, trustful, and everybody knew me as a mama’s darling. But when I moved, I faced a lot of challenges with the new country, language, and people and had to deal with a lot of things on my own. At first, it was hard but as time passed, I managed to work through financial, household, and personal problems. My awareness about the world grew; I started making certain observations and conclusions. I can think for

myself even though I still regularly call my parents and listen to their advice. Overall, I’ve become more mature! What is your deepest dream you want to become a reality? I miss my family very much. I wish my parents lived with me in America. And I’m trying my best to become a successful, self-sufficient person who can support them as well. How would you describe living in the United States in several words? Possibilities, the pace of life, and tolerance. What title would you give to the book on your life? I think it would be Twists and Turns of Fate or Accidental/Nonaccidental Encounters. I’ve met a lot of good people in my life. Every new encounter led me to new revelations that either inspired me to do something immediately or manifested themselves later on. And some encounters have completely changed my life. I have always wondered how people’s fates interact: •

Why do we meet the people we meet?

Why does it happen at this particular time?

Why is it he/she, out of all the people?

My experiences in life reaffirmed my belief that we meet people for a reason and at the time we need them the most.

ALL-ON-4 Implants and Teeth is a new Game Changer in Dentistry

TEETHIN-A-DAY

is our specialization (Free smile evaluation is available) Photo by: Igor Ilyenko @coolstyle_productions

Dr. Alex Antipov: “WE HAVE THE POWER TO BRING PATIENTS

NEW SMILES AND CONFIDENCE IN ONE DAY!”

DR. ALEX ANTIPOV MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON AND DIRECTOR OF FUSION DENTAL IMPLANT CENTER www.dentalimplants.io | 916-713-3303 Dr. Antipov, you are a well-known specialist in implants and immediate teeth technologies in dentistry. What type of solution are you providing for your patients in our community? We love to work with the new All-on-4 Dental Implant and Teeth technology which appeared recently in dental implantation and restoration. This contemporary technique has appeared recently and has gained wide popularity due to the rapid and radical solution for people who are suffering from tooth loss. There is a common myth that tooth loss is considered to be a problem mostly for the elderly people. However, at any age, partial or complete loss of teeth can occur and lead to a full spectrum of serious health issues. Wow, that technology seems like a life changer. Could you tell us more about the details and how long did it take to restore the full teeth row?

cases, my professional team could help anyone who are looking for a beautiful natural smile! What do you think about the common situation when patients traveling abroad in order to save money on dental implants? Does it worth it in your opinion? I truly believe that there are a lot of great doctors in any country. And of course, I understand people’s concern about high medical bills here in the US. But in my opinion, around 70% of those who decided to save money, finally will pay much more, because most of the time we are redoing and improving mistakes made by other doctors. In our office, we offer the ideal combination of price and quality. We are working with a full range of medical insurances and also, we provide interestfree payment options for those who can’t pay right away. We use the best materials and our highly professional team of assistants and patient coordinators will go above and beyond for you to feel comfortable at our friendly clinic.

I am driven by the ability to solve complex problems and make people happy

That is for sure life-changing. Implantation All-on-4 quickly became the most popular procedure in our office. The implants are placed in special positions relative to each other: two in front-straight and two on the sides — at an angle of 35-45 degrees. A temporary non-removable prosthesis is immediately rigidly fixed on the implants. The temporary prosthesis is made of lightweight materials and provides aesthetic and functional rehabilitation. Rather than taking months to heal, a patient can have the All-on-4 dental implants loaded at once. In the history of implant dentistry, this thrilling alternative to ill dental health and appearance is virtually unmatched. Almost 100% successful implantation rate plays an important role in the high demand for this type of procedure. Just imagine, on the day of the surgery, the patient goes home with beautiful non-removable teeth and after a few weeks you can already take any food and smile! Since you have started your practice you saw thousands of patients who struggle with teeth loss. What are the most important things for those who are trying to keep their natural teeth and protect their gums? I am personally a big supporter of a healthy lifestyle. That includes a whole-food nutrition-dense diet, daily physical activity, restful sleep, and mindfulness. Also, I would suggest everyone check with his dentist every 6 months. It is much harder and pricier to help those who haven’t been at the dentist office for a while. But even in the most complicated

Is there one patient whose case or outcomes impressed you the most?

I can’t name only one patient. Every surgery and every client is different. I strongly believe in the personal approach to every situation and my top priority is to help people in returning them a new smile. When I see happy and grateful clients, then I realize how dramatically I can change anyone’s life in just a few days and it is a true miracle. How were you able to balance a busy dental implant surgery practice with an entrepreneurial pursuit by growing your practice and creating an educational center for the patients? The answer is simple: I’m just a fan of my business. I am happy to come to work every day. I have a great team that has values similar to mine. I am driven by the ability to solve complex problems and make people happy, returning them not only smiles but also lost health. After all, our health largely depends on the state of the oral cavity. And, if we have rotten teeth and can’t chew our food thoroughly, we can’t hope for good physical health. What is the “perfect smile” according to you? The perfect smile is a healthy smile. What is the best way to contact you and make an appointment? We invite everyone to our Fusion Dental Implants center. You can please call for a complimentary consultation and 3D image appointment at (916) 713-3303 or fill out a callback request from our patient coordinator with you on the website dentalimplants.io RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

ON HOW TO MAKE SPECTACULAR PHOTOS THE EARTH IS ART, THE PHOTOGRAPHER IS ONLY A WITNESS

Olha Melokhina:

PHOTOGRAPHY IS MY LOVE AND

VOCATION

OLHA MELOKHINA PHOTOGRAPHER Instagram: @olhaphotography | 916-288-5839 How did your love affair with photography begin? What motivated you to become a photographer? I have been in love with photography since I was a teenager. Capturing amazing and vivid moments in the camera lens is what I love most about photography. My path continued while studying at the Faculty of Graphic Design. During my second year, we studied the subject “photography”. It was then that my love for photography exploded with a new passion and I knew that photography would be my vocation! I studied everything I could possibly learn about photography: how to correctly set the light, the right angle, as well as creating accents. After moving to the United States, I decided to continue my journey in this direction. Seeing the beauty through a camera lens requires a special talent. Where do you get your inspiration? I find inspiration everywhere. A good mood and a sunny day create a great cocktail for inspiration. Sometimes I observe the works of famous and successful photographers, and that leaves me inspired. Even a single object or a person’s features can impress me in a way that is enough for a series of unique shots. I also love to discover new and unusual locations, play with light, fabrics, and special effects. Tell us about your most memorable photoshoot. Each photoshoot is unique and different. I have a personal relationship with all my clients and my own vision for each photoshoot. Perhaps, most touching for me is when my clients return again and again. For example, I photographed a marriage proposal, then a wedding, a pregnancy, the first days of their children’s lives, and a wedding anniversary. I am proud that people trust me with some of the most important moments of their lives.

Second, learn some basic composition like Rule of Third, leading lines, scale, framing to name just a few. Once you think you have the rules of composition down, break them, by playing with other aspects like lighting and angles. Try thinking outside of the box when it comes to what you’re capturing — your viewers could be pleasantly surprised by a cool or unexpected subject. Which star or celebrity would you like to work with and invite to a photoshoot? I don’t divide people into categories such as famous and ordinary. There is no difference to me who I am photographing. Every person is unique. I am interested in getting to know people, finding things in them that even they do not notice in themselves, and then emphasizing them in our photoshoots. I am following you on Instagram and it appears you travel a lot. In your opinion, what are the top three places for a stunning photoshoot? I can’t name only three locations. Our world has hundreds and even thousands of amazing places. It seems to me that the task of a professional photographer is to take extraordinary shots even from the most ordinary places. Have you ever been surprised by your clients, and if so, with what? To be honest, I probably have the most wonderful clients. I get a lot of gifts and surprises from them. Probably one of the most memorable moments was a trip to Hawaii. It was very spontaneous. My client called me, said that she was going to have a vows renewal in Hawaii, and asked what camera she should buy to get good photos from the ceremony. I jokingly told her, “Why would you take a camera if you can take a photographer?” Two days later, she called and invited me to the island. As a result, we all flew to Hawaii together and took incredibly beautiful pictures!

A cool mood and a sunny day is already a great cocktail for inspiration

Is it possible to take a beautiful and spectacular photo on a regular phone? If so, what advice would you give for this? Of course, you can. These days, even movies are created through the phone. Here are a few simple steps. First, keep in mind where your source of lighting is coming from. Try to be careful with the backlight while taking pictures of people. It can be really nice lighting at the golden hour or early mornings. Just make sure to choose the correct settings by using a special app that allows it or by changing settings on the phone if you have this option. Also, you may use flash to fill light.

What is your motto or favorite quote in life? Keep positive and know that with God’s help you can go through everything. What are your plans for 2021? I am in the planning process to launch a new project. If you and your readers want to know more, please stay tuned and follow me on Instagram: @Olhaphotography or @Olhamelokhina

TO ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOM

How does a Person’s Approach to life lead to PROSPERITY?

Slava Palamarchuk:

NEVER DELEGATE CONTROL OF YOUR Photo by: Natalie Vell @natalie.vell

FINANCES

TO GOVERNMENTS AND BANKS

SLAVA PALAMARCHUK WEALTH STRATEGIST www.slavapal.com | 916-628-0940 What motivated you to start your own business in the financial sector? How did you know that this was your calling? When I was in 9th grade, a teacher asked me what I wanted to do after I graduated from college. I was quick to answer and said I wanted to be a banker. I was born into a family of pastors (my dad and my grandfather) and I realized early on that I had a serving heart. So, as I pursued my career and looked at my options, I focused on three things. First, it was important that I stay local and stay connected to the community. Second, I knew that I needed to be in the realm of serving, helping, and changing people’s lives for the better. Finally, I desired to be compensated well for my hard work. When I bought a book and read about the most popular professions in the 21st century, all the pointers led me to finance! What is the most important lesson you have learned in 2020? Investment guru, Warren Buffett, makes an important point when he says, “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are afraid”. For a while, I was preparing for the fact that the markets would start to dive. As soon as this happened in March 2020, I told clients with a longterm time perspective and available cash that this was a great time to buy shares. The fact that people prepared ahead of time gave them a huge boost in April and June. One of the biggest psychological challenges for most people is to overcome the fear of the future. However, what I learned in 2020, is that when times are tough and investments of all kinds are falling in value, now is the time to control emotions and use the opportunity to invest for easy returns! Remember that the world is divided into two camps of people. The first type of crowd will always say that the moon is falling, the second will look for opportunities to make more money.

most people would rather borrow money from a bank and agree to pay interest.) In my opinion, the biggest mistake people make is that they put control of their finances in the hands of the government and banks. Also, I believe it can be financially harmful when income earners don’t apply the principles of discipline to how they manage money! What are the top 3 common mistakes among your clients? In my opinion, these are the most common mistakes in personal management: Excessive and frivolous spending, living on borrowed money and not adequately researching prior to investing in real estate, business or the stock market. The sad thing is that many people prefer to take risks. However, once a loss occurs, the usual tendency is to blame the investment mechanism for human shortcomings. As a result, poor money management and poor research lead to minimal trust and some degree of fear of these investments in the future. How to achieve financial freedom? Where should we even start? In all my meetings, we start with a deep understanding of the personal or business budget. Next, we focus our attention on debt management/ repayment (not all debts are bad). In addition, as we work together, we are fully aware of the future of how and where we can start investing. Usually, my job is to guide clients through the entire process, assess all risks, and set the right expectations. As soon as people see the results, their motivation to continue the course skyrockets!

My goal is to keep moving forward no matter what

According to statistics, 78% of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck. What, in your opinion, is the main reason for this wrong relationship so many people have with money? I believe that financial issues in a family or business reflect a person’s overall approach to life. For example, I like to think of money as soldiers. Imagine that you have an army and you have to go to war tomorrow. It’s time to assemble your army, and as a leader, you have no idea where your guys are. At this point, your leadership has completely failed. Not only will you lose the war, but you will potentially have to surrender, and you will be forced to agree to the winning party’s given terms regarding how you will pay for all losses! (Of course,

Tell us how you manage to combine successful work, family, and raising two adorable kids? Work-life balance can be the biggest challenge for many people. I also constantly remind myself of my main responsibilities to stay ahead. My true goal is to have a consistent daily routine in which I develop my intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social abilities. To manage it in the best possible way, I create systems and habits through thoughtful planning. I know that once the agenda is set, I will be great at execution (everyone should know their strengths and weaknesses). As a result, I organize my daily agenda with technology. In addition, I distinguish all my tasks between urgent and important. My method is to constantly communicate with clients and family members if things don’t go as planned. At the end of the day, I always analyze my day, learn from mistakes (I call them gifts), adjust my process, and move on. My goal is to keep moving forward no matter what. And yes, there is no better feeling than seeing both kids running towards me when I open the garage door. At this moment, there is nothing more important, and I am completely at their disposal! THE TRUE ENTREPRENEUR IS A DOER, NOT A DREAMER! Photo by: Volha Piatrouski @volha_piatrouski

Sergey Rovskiy: QUALITY AND HONESTY ARE THE BEST

BUSINESS PLAN

SERGEY ROVSKIY PROJECT MANAGER AT AMERICAN DREAM KITCHEN www.AmericanDreamKitchen.com | 916-465-1539

One business sector to successfully survive the recent pandemic is the construction industry. In your opinion, what factors contributed to this growth? Due to the pandemic, people spent much more time at home and many even started working from home. Events, concerts, restaurants, and most of the tourism industry were put on hold. With a lack of entertainment options combined with increased time at home, many families decided it was time for a home renovation. This included kitchen remodels, new window installations, and an overall makeover to give their home’s interior a fresh look. What key factors have allowed you to be successful in your industry? The first would be the raw materials which we use as they will ultimately determine the quality of the finished product. Second is the expertise and skill of our employees. I would also include honesty, decency, punctuality, and transparency in setting prices. We value our customers and the fact that they repeatedly choose us and refer us to their family and friends show that we provide first-class service at fair prices. Whose opinion is more important in making decisions on a remodel: husband or wife?

What role did your family play in your success? My family is my mainstay, my inspiration, and my greatest support. Success in any business is almost impossible if you do not have a reliable support system at home. My dear wife always supports me during both the ups and downs of life. I know that she is always ready to listen and help, and she inspires me to pursue new endeavors. What new trends do you see in the construction industry and how promising is this area for investors? Construction is currently one of the most promising sectors. Now we are actively working on 3D houses. Very soon, such projects will be implemented in our country. Also, no less relevant is the rental properties. The housing market and in particular, multi-family homes are on the rise. They are very convenient, compact and available for rent to a large number of people.

Success in any business is impossible if you do not have a family that supports you!

More times than not, it depends on where the renovations will take place. If we are talking about the garage, most often, the husband voices a stronger opinion. If we are talking about the kitchen, then in most cases, the last word belongs to the wife. To be successful in your business, what qualities do you need to have? In our business, punctuality and the quality of the materials and services offered are extremely important. Also, honesty, decency, and transparency in setting prices are very important. We value our customers and the fact that they choose us and advise their friends and acquaintances show that we provide the first-class service at fair prices.

Looking back at 2020, what is your greatest takeaway?

This past year has not been easy for any of us. Humanity was faced with many problems that have thrown most, if not all of us, out of our comfort zone. This year has highlighted just how important family, faith and the health of relatives and friends are. This is paramount! Spending time with your family and helping each other is priceless. ‘Family comes first’, is my motto in life and it has become more relevant than ever in 2020! If a person is interested in renovating their kitchen, is it possible to visit your showroom? Yes, I invite everyone who is planning or considering a kitchen upgrade to come by our showroom in Sacramento. You’ll see some model kitchen designs as well as inspect the quality of materials that we use. I will be happy to answer all your questions and help you choose the best option, with the perfect price to quality ratio. To make an appointment for a showroom tour, please call me at 916-465-1539.

YEARS HAND IN HAND

THE LOKTEFF’S LOVE STORY

This amazing couple sweeps you off your feet in the first minute with their sincerity, spontaneity, and tenderness as they look at each other. They have lived together for 60 years, raised four beautiful children, and helped thousands of Russian-speaking refugees move to America.

We hope you will be inspired by Mikhail and Nadezhda’s story of love, loyalty, and devotion as they share how it is possible to live with one person your entire life with love and respect for each other! Mikhail, Nadezhda, tell us when and under what circumstances you first met. Mikhail: I first saw Nadya when I was 13 years old and she was only 8. She was my best friend’s sister. Several years later, I began to talk with Nadezhda, and I realized that I was in love with her. As soon as she turned 18, I proposed to her. Nadezhda, do you remember how this happened? Nadezhda: Yes, of course. We spent a lot of time together with our mutual friends at the Sacramento River during the summers. There was a small platform on the river and one afternoon, Misha shyly called me up to him and proposed. I was in love with him, and without hesitation, I answered YES! What helped both of you to carry this youthful, passionate love throughout your life? What is most important in a happy marriage? Mikhail: The wisdom of God and patience of my dear wife are what helped both of us go through all of life’s difficult situations. My dear Nadya is an amazing woman. She always tries to understand me and helps reason through the most difficult decisions in life. Without her, I would not have been able to do half of what I have accomplished during my lifetime.

my mind: stunningly beautiful architecture and nature. Even the air was adorned with some indescribable purity. And suddenly, the bells started chiming, and this crystal ding-dong was the motive for the song “Moscow Nights”: Not a rustle heard in the garden, All is standing still till sunrise. If only you knew how dear to me are Moscow nights. As I slowly sang the song to the dinging of the bells, I remembered two Russian sisters who taught me the words of this song while walking down the Sacramento River with Bryte Youth many years ago. Now walking by the river, I thought: “These are my people”although I had never been to Russia before. I was born in China to parents who were lucky enough to flee communism. My thoughts were interrupted with tears, as I realized that the persecution of Christians was still real. It was not in vain that I was here to deliver Bibles and money for an underground printing press in the Soviet Union. I realized that I wanted to help my people and would do everything possible and impossible to save them. Nadezhda, certainly, Mikhail’s decision would affect you and your children. Did you support your husband in his decision immediately and what was the most difficult thing for you?

I was in love with him, and without hesitation, I answered YES!

Nadezhda: Of course, it was not easy, but I saw how sincerely my husband wanted to serve God and work for the good and salvation of his fellow countrymen.

Nadezhda: It’s very easy to live with Misha. He not only listened to me, but he also heard me. He always paid attention to me, delighted me with gifts, and always spoke to me with respect. To live your whole life together, you need to be able to communicate with each other and understand what your partner wants. Without the Lord and His wisdom, I think it is impossible to live a long and happy life.

I trusted the Lord and despite all the difficulties, I realized that I had to support Mikhail. The most difficult thing was solving everyday issues. Children, household, work – I was responsible for all of that. But I saw how Mikhail’s eyes would shine and the dedication he had for the “Word to Russia” Mission, so we went through all the difficulties together and helped each other.

One of the most significant events in your life is the formation of the “Word to Russia” Ministry. Could you tell me what made you, Mikhail, a respected and beloved teacher, leave teaching and start your missionary activity?

Mikhail, have there been moments in your life when you doubted your decision?

Mikhail: This crucial and decisive moment for me and my family occurred during a trip to the Soviet Union with my wife and about 25 tourists. I flew to Moscow and decided to go for a jog early one morning. This memory is still vivid in

All people have doubts. But I have never regretted the decision I made. Were there disappointments? Of course, there were. At the same time, the following life principle always helped me: If you did good, forget it! Don’t expect anything in return from that person. Not all people pay back their debts and not everyone remains grateful, so I have RUSSIAN TIME MAGAZINE

never done anything mercenarily. Everything I did was with all my heart, but what people did was beyond my power. And of course, the Lord has always supported me. In the most difficult times, He was always there. Mikhail, at the beginning of your career, you devoted many years to teaching and raising children. How do you see the educational system now and what is its main difference from 50 years ago? Mikhail: Oh, that’s a tough question that can’t be answered quickly. In fact, the subject is profound. You know, I still meet with my former students. They recognize me, and we have a very warm conversation and reflect on our school years. At that time, the role of a teacher was not limited to making students love and learn your subject. We talked a lot, even on spiritual topics. Children opened up in frank conversations which helped them grow not only in their studies but also helped them develop their moral and spiritual values. Now, unfortunately, schools have changed, and the level of education is different as well. The strong link between teacher and students is often not there and neither is reverence, respect, and trust for one another. I could give several examples of how a teacher’s personal involvement helped me make important choices. Nadezhda, what principles of upbringing did you adhere to in raising successful and happy children? Nadezhda: I think there is no universal advice, but it is especially important to study the Word of God with children and guide them but do it with immense love. Sometimes, permissiveness spoils a person much more than adequate discipline. It is incredibly important to love children, but even loving them, one must not forget that discipline in some situations will help to raise responsible, happy children who will respect themselves and other people. Mikhail, Nadezhda, what obligatory family traditions do you have in your family that you adhere to from year to year? Nadezhda: We definitely get together for all the major holidays such as Christmas, birthdays, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc. Of course, we cook lots of delicious food, sing songs altogether, give each other gifts, and thank the Lord for everything in our life! What is love impossible without? Mikhail: Without God and patience. Nadezhda: Without respect and belief in the presence of the Lord among us.

Living 60 years together in perfect harmony is truly an achievement, especially considering today’s realities. What helped you retain your love throughout your life? Mikhail: I am grateful to God for the fact that 60 years ago he gave me such a gift at the river. Nadya is a unique person. I love her very much and I am happy that we have had a common heartbeat for so many years. Nadezhda: I also thank the Lord for Mikhail. And I will add that we have always been able to talk. We never went to bed without speaking. We discussed all the difficult moments and knew how to hear each other. This is very important for a long and happy marriage. Is there a book or a movie that you would recommend everyone to watch? Nadezhda: The most important book for everyone is the Bible. It contains so much wisdom, love, and answers to even the most difficult questions. Regarding movies, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Gone with the Wind”, and “Doctor Zhivago” come to mind. Mikhail: These films show the complexity and strength of the human character. After all, each of us has incredible potential, and the most important thing is to find the strength and courage to realize it. What were your life mottos? Nadezhda, I want you to answer for Mikhail, and he will answer for you. Nadezhda: Give everything you can and never expect recognition. Mikhail: You can do a lot more if you don’t worry about who gets the praise and recognition for it.

You can do a lot more if you don’t worry about who gets the praise and recognition for it Communicating with you, Mikhail and Nadezhda, one can really believe that there is such a strong and true love! And my last question to you both: When you appear before the Lord, what will you tell him? Mikhail: I will sing the song “I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord” with Him. Nadezhda: And I will join in the song with my beloved husband.

BE A TROPHY,

NOT A PHONY Fashion is what you buy, style is what you can do with it”

Nicky Hilton

We live in a world where if you’re not“in”, then you’re out! Women are putting more effort than ever into enhancing their image, imitating celebrities, and essentially morphing themselves into a whole new identity; often pushing that boundary surgically. With more pressure from society, social media and culture, it is a marathon in which we are left completely and utterly drained physically, financially and mentally. Elena Shishkin cracked the code and is here to help you avoid making fashion mistakes. We all have that one photo we look back on and cringe thinking, ‘How did I ever allow myself to wear that’? This is where her expertise comes in. No surgery required. Dress How You Want to be Addressed! Don’t be a clothes hanger. To be stylish means to wear what suits you. The easiest way to be overlooked is to chase fashion trends. We seriously do not recommend that.

Buying things that don’t fit. This doesn’t have to do with your weight, but how you choose to enhance and work with what your mama gave you. Each of us is blessed in different ways. We must be mindful of how we dress if we are 5’ 2”, 6’ 2”, 102 lbs, 302 lbs, or have that extra blessing in all the right places. There are great options to show off those amazing features and curves; the trick is learning to do so correctly. Luckily for you and me, Elena offers professionalstyle advisor tips at her showroom, so we need not face a disaster like those old high school photos again. Do not buy cheap, low-quality items. It is better to have three or four higher quality pieces that can always be rotated with other items of clothing. Mass-market brands such as Zara or H&M carry unique pieces. When shopping, it requires a little work on your part to understand how these pieces fit into your wardrobe and how you can best utilize them for their maximum potential against your highest ‘assets’. It is not necessary to dress in four to five different colors at one time; being confused for a peacock by someone who left their glasses at home is not the goal. The most stylish looks mimic monochrome color schemes, in retrospect, you also do not need to imitate a burglar with the all black look. The bottom line here is, develop your own personal style. This will take time. This will take trial and error. This will take a range of Elena’s expertise catered to you at her luxurious boutique. Open is not an ‘all the above’ choice. You only get to select either A, B, or C. Legs OR cleavage. Backless OR legs. Cleavage OR backless. You get it, there are numerous variations. But semi-nude is not one of them unless you’re on a beach. Leave something to the imagination. No, this is not an old-fashioned way of thinking. This is a ‘respect me’ way of thinking and ‘yes we just met but I will not sleep with you tonight’ kind of body language. Unless you want to portray that kind of self-image, then, by all means, keep doing what works for you.

Business

Wear

Leave large, bulky bags at home. They give the appearance you’re toting a diaper bag. Unless, of course, you have babies! If you are of short stature, such bags do not compliment your look as they drape over half your body’s length. Your smartphone possesses half, if not more of the items you carry; therefore, eliminate the need to lug around such a suitcase. Relieve the pressure off your back and intensify your look with a clutch. You will instantly look more feminine.

Brand names are everywhere! This is no longer relevant and fashionable. Being a classy woman does not mean seeing the same two letters printed 500 times on your purse. We get it, you like nice, expensive things. What shows true elegance? A small logo of the brand printed on the corner thoughtfully matched to a belt in the same material. That shows femininity and thoughtfulness to your image which equals instant attraction. Jeans with enormous holes are out and this look is no longer in fashion. Some scuffs tactfully placed are acceptable, but this is slowly fading out. Buried alongside holes is the low waist. It is better to buy a good pair of high-quality blue jeans with a high fit which will emphasize the waist and lengthen the legs. Wearing rhinestones, lace, gold, and other gaudy accessories should be a subliminal touch, but not the main focus. If you see a younger girl wearing such jewelry, you assume she bought it from a kiosk in the mall and it will turn green when she washes her hands, the same for more mature women. It’s just not a good look. It never looks authentic and the saying, ‘less is more’ is true when it comes to accessorizing your outfit. If you are married, you already wear a ring. Most women have their ears pierced; that is already two pieces of jewelry without adding any more to ‘match’ your outfit. When in doubt, go without. Yes, this was a thing. Yes, we love to think this is still a trend. Ladies, this died a long time ago; please accept it. Beige, lacquer heels cannot be worn under every single outfit. While by themselves, they are sexy and stylish, they must properly compliment your attire. Shoes very much affect your image; therefore, incorporate colors to tie them in rather than assume that because of a bland color they can match ‘any’ outfit. Like cars, shoes go out of style. Look at modern models and save up to invest in a new pair of heels. There is no better feeling than sleeping in them the first night they are purchased before they are worn outside. Or is that just me?

Casual Wear

You are uniquely YOU and training yourself to spotlight what is your favorite feature will keep all eyes on you

Evening Wear We all have flaws; the trick is to learn to minimize them while highlighting and accentuating your gifts. Just like makeup, in fashion you can diminish the look of a feature you are not too fond of and virtually eliminate it, if only for a few hours. On the other hand, make those virtues shine! You are uniquely YOU and training yourself to spotlight what is your favorite feature will keep all eyes on you. The more practice you put into making a more confident you, the more effortless this will become. Just like a caterpillar, you will radiate with this newfound reliance that others just can’t put their finger on but will be captivated by your presence. Most importantly, never be afraid to experiment! The best memories and discoveries are made by trying something new. 2020 was so unpredictable. We need to break the mold that confined us with either a new look, style, adventure, etc. There is so much a new wardrobe can shake up in your life, Elena is able to meet with you one-on-one to discuss what is important to you and achieve that goal while your fashion statement screams beauty and elegance. INTERESTING AND FUN FACTS ABOUT CANCUN YOU WANT TO KNOW

1. The first name of the city was Nizuc which means point of grass in the Mayan language. The actual etymology of Cancun remains unclear, but it might mean a place of snakes. However, don’t be alarmed: out of 200 reptile and amphibian species inhabiting the Yucatan peninsula, only five snake species can be considered dangerously poisonous.

3. Cancun is a birdwatching paradise. Numerous species of tropical birds such as Yellow-throated Euphonia, American Redstart, Black Catbird, Yellow-lored Parrot, and Keel-billed Toucan inhabit the Yucatan peninsula. If you’re lucky enough, you may even spot flamingos in their natural habitat. 4. The only crocodile species that lives in Cancun is the Crocodylus acutus and is considered non-aggressive to humans. So far, there has only been one non-fatal crocodile attack in Cancun. On the off chance you do get hunted by a crocodile, make sure to zigzag as these predators can only run in a straight line.

2. Cancun International Airport is the second busiest Mexican airport and has nearly 25 million passengers every year. Cancun tourism revenues bring a whopping seven billion dollars into the Mexican economy annually.

5. Dazzlingly white sand won’t burn your feet when you walk barefoot as it’s made from crushed coral. More than 1 billion gallons of this sand was extracted from the seafloor to pamper tourists with some of the best beaches in the world.

HOW TO START

A NATIONWIDE COMPANY DURING A PANDEMIC The year 2020 was hard. Period. It was full of challenges which impacted so many that few people were not adversely affected by the events of this year. It was especially difficult for small businesses. Therefore, it may seem surprising that during this time, someone would decide to open a company with plans to roll out nationwide. The heroine of today’s Business Insider Column is Mila Petrov who did just that.

Creating a new business during a pandemic is very risky. How did you come up with the idea to start “Angel Hand Senior Placement” and why now? Starting a new business has always been my dream. I wanted to do something for a living where I could help others. I have worked many years with the elderly, and I’ve learned a lot from them. Being with them makes me understand that the life we have right now will fade away; that life is precious, and we need to value each day. During the pandemic, I saw a high demand to place elderly patients after their hospitalization. My business model is to provide the elderly and their loved ones with the resources and guidance needed to find appropriate placement. Often, the elderly are placed in nursing homes without knowing that there are so many other options available. My mission is to help families find the best options for their individual needs. And most importantly, our services at “Angel’s Hand” are free for the families! How would you describe the main value of your business? The biggest value of my business is to be the bridge between my clients and other businesses during their most difficult times. Also, I often see language barriers between patients and hospitals and our company has the resources to help. Honesty and integrity are most important in my business and being able to offer around the clock support to address their needs is my number one priority! How do you think the pandemic has changed the business environment in the US and around the world? The pandemic changed a lot in the business industry. We are forced to be online more than offline. My business is built on relationships that I create while working with families. Building a relationship right now is harder because we cannot meet as we did before. However, through it

all, we do ZOOM calls and virtual visits to facilities. Wearing the right PPE (personal protective equipment) and visiting clients and family is still the top priority of my business. Is it possible to combine a career and motherhood? Honestly, it’s challenging. But I really believe that one day all this hard work will pay off. I will look back and say thank God for giving me the wisdom and strength to do everything at the right time. As my son grows up, I want him to know that he has a mom who built a business that he may one day choose to own. I believe that being a full-time, working mom is a gift and I am thankful for this journey. I feel I have an obligation to make the most of it. What does it mean to you to be a successful person?

that. Remember, a real leader delegates tasks and does not try to do everything by himself. If you want to keep your business running optimally, then surround yourself with professionals who can advise you. My personal reference would be VolcheckDigital Company with their great promotion: Pay per Client Program. I think it is the future of marketing business growth. What helps you get through the most difficult and stressful times? First, I believe in God and His power of blessings because without him I am nothing in this world. Prayer is the most effective tool that helps me in difficult times. Also, taking care of yourself is necessary to survive tough times. You won’t be of any help to others if you aren’t healthy yourself.

For me to be successful is to pursue my goals in life and step-by-step achieve them. Since I was a child, I have dreamt of having my own business and helping others in need. I think that success is not the main point. The main idea is to be happy inside even if you are going through challenges and failures. I’m a Christian who loves God and serves him and lives by his principles.

Another great tool for me is to practice acceptance. Let go of what you cannot control. First, make a list of everything you worry about but don’t have control over. These are the things you can stop worrying about. During a moment of prayer, visualize yourself handing those items over to your higher power and letting them go. Then focus on what you can control, like your self-care, your words, your actions, and your decisions.

What is the biggest challenge that is facing small businesses right now?

What would I do with my first million earned?

The number one problem for small businesses is the lack of cash flow. You can never have too much — but you can certainly have too little when it comes to money. In fact, nearly 67 percent of current small business owners reported lack of capital as their top challenge, according to California’s Small Business Report.

First, I would invest money in real estate and then purchase stocks and bonds. I would rather invest than spend money. I strongly believe that money should work for you and not you for money!

Also, many small businesses lack an effective marketing strategy. Twenty eight percent of small business owners agreed that marketing and advertising is their second biggest business challenge. It’s okay if you aren’t a whiz when it comes to posting on social media or creating a website. There are plenty of people who can help you with

What motivates you to wake up every morning and go to work? My motivation is my family and my desire to help the community! I want to provide them with the best service that they can possibly get. My passion is providing the next level of care to my clients and seeing their best outcome possible. I am a small tool in God’s hands, and I am incredibly grateful that I have the time, knowledge, and desire to make my business grow and expand nationwide!
