LIU Tennis makes history in Brooklyn swan song By John Torenli, Sports Editor Brooklyn Eagle

First-year LIU-Brooklyn Head Women’s Tennis Coach Jan Griga knew that anything short of a third straight Northeast Conference title for the well-decorated squad he inherited last August would be considered a failure. So. he and the Blackbirds made it their mission during the final season of the squad’s tenure here in Downtown Brooklyn to complete an historic three-peat and get back to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Mission accomplished! And then some. As the tournament’s top seed, the Blackbirds knocked off neighborhood rival St. Francis Brooklyn, fourth-seeded Sacred Heart and FDU to increase their season-ending winning streak to nine in a row since opening the campaign with a 5-7 record. The red-hot Blackbirds will now visit the University of Texas, ranked eighth in the entire nation, for Saturday’s opening-round NCAA Tournament match in Austin, Texas. A stunning upset of the Longhorns would send LIU into Presented by: a second-round match against either Rice or Texas A&M on Sunday. “I could not be more proud of this team for what they have accomplished and I could not be more thankful to have had a chance to coach these talented young ladies,” Griga told the Eagle via e-mail Tuesday night as his team prepared to take on one of the nation’s elite tennis programs. “Stepping up to the head coaching position this year was somewhat of a dream come true for me and something I really, really wanted,” added Griga, who served as a volunteer assistant coach on the previous two championship squads before replacing former head man Anthony Davison. The promotion came with plenty of pressure, as well. With a star-studded roster, a top preseason ranking and the knowledge that the tennis program would be shifted to the LIU Post campus beginning this coming fall, as per the school’s One LIU initiative announced last October, Griga knew the stakes were higher than usual in 2019. “Given the success we’ve had in the previous two seasons, it was absolutely crucial for me to do well at the helm in my first year,” he ceded. “While having the same team returning with even more experience was a definite advantage, the same could not be said of the pressure and the naturally high expectations placed on our shoulders this year.” • FREE Continental Ironically, Griga credited the team’s worst stretch of the season — a three-game skid against non-conference foes Breakfast Columbia, Lynn University and Florida Atlantic back in • FREE Screenings mid-March — for the Blackbirds’ late-season push to yet another title. • FREE Parking “Although we lost those matches, I believe that this was • FREE Raffles the turning point for us,” he said. “Whether we became tougher by facing this level of opposition, or we were forced • Approximately 40 to re-establish our sense of humility, realizing that previous Exhibitors will be on successes don’t guarantee continued success, doesn’t really matter. hand to answer your The Grand Ballroom • 1030 86th St, Brooklyn, NY 11228. “What does matter is that we hit the ground running, working harder than ever to win the next nine straight health-related questions matches, rain or shine, to eventually clinch our record third NEC title for a moment we will never forget.” Plus a discussion panel That moment also came with the bittersweet realization of expert speakers in that the Blackbirds had already played their final match here in Brooklyn with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Villanova Urgent Care, Health Insurance, on March 22. Medical Miracles: SUNY Downstate hosts second annual Chronic Pancreatitis and Diabetes Symposium By John Alexander Brooklyn Eagle

Imagine a miraculous procedure that could help patients suffering from diabetes and pancreatitis that would allow a surgeon to remove diseased cells from the pancreas, extract all the necessary and healthy cells and inject it back into the liver allowing a patient to lead a full and normal life. Well, that nonconventional procedure is a reality and was part of the discussion at SUNY Downstate Medical Center/University Hospital of Brooklyn’s second annual Chronic Pancreatitis and Diabetes Symposium held on Thursday, April 25 at the SUNY Downstate Alumni Auditorium located at 395 Lenox Road. The all-day event featured a panel of world-renowned experts in the field exploring the management of chronic pancreatitis and diabetes, both progressive and disabling diseases; and innovative new patient treatments and surgical techniques for both progressive debilitating diseases. “One of the most important things about chronic pancreatitis and the treatment that this disease necessitates, is the fact that it requires a procedure that only a handful of private insurance companies in our country approve,” according to Alexander Schwartzman, SUNY Downstate’s clinical professor of surgery, vice chairperson, Department of Surgery. “In England and Canada, and you know how regulated the healthcare in England and Canada is, it is approved in both countries. In the United States the procedure is not approved by Medicaid or Medicare and it is only approved by a handful of companies. And that holds true for even patients who they know need it and still can’t get the procedure.” The experts shared groundbreaking techniques and best practices for delivering comprehensive and collaborative approaches to diagnose and treat both disorders. The event is designed to engage primary care physicians, family practitioners and internists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists and surgeons to improve patient outcomes. According to the National Pancreas Foundation, each year in the U.S. nearly 220,000 people will be afflicted with acute pancreatitis, and more than 80,000 people will be diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. SUNY Downstate Department of Surgery Chairperson Rainer Gruessner, who organized the symposium with Schwartzman, explained the importance of participating in such an event in Brooklyn. “I think the reason why we had this meeting here is because Brooklyn is the capital of diabetes and what I wanted to bring to Downstate is an awareness of where cutting edge medicine is these days and what can be done, and what is being done around the country, and what we can actually do here in Brooklyn for our patients,” said Gruessner. “We are also the largest teaching institution in the state and we are one of the largest residency programs in the state and we want to bring the excitement that new techniques can bring to the next generation of physician leaders,” added Gruessner. Among those attending the symposium from

SUNY Downstate were Mary Ann Banerji, chief, Division of Endocrinology, and John Renz, vice chairperson for program development, Department of Surgery. “I think this is a wonderful event for the people of Brooklyn with chronic pancreatitis,” said Renz. “You have total world-class talent coming to Brooklyn to discuss a very important disease.” Speakers from across the country included Balamurugan Appakalai, Ph.D., associate professor of surgery, University of Louisville; Melena Bellin, M.D., associate professor, pediatric endocrinology, University of Minnesota Medical Center; Bernhard Hering, M.D., professor of surgery and medicine, executive director, Schulze Diabetes Institute, University of Minnesota; Jose Oberholzer, professor of surgery and biomedical engineering, chief, Division of Transplant, University of Virginia; Nuri Ozden, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, SUNY Upstate Medical Center; and R. Paul Robertson, M.D., professor emeritus, Universities of Washington and Minnesota. Robertson commended Gruessner for spearheading the symposium. “The procedure of extracting the pancreas and removing healthy cells was pioneered by David Sutherland at the University of Minnesota in 1980. It’s been almost 40 years and the program is still not universally accepted. This program needs to be championed and I just think of all the patients out there who need this procedure and don’t know about it,” Robertson told this paper. Bellin, who specializes in islet auto transplantation in children and adults with chronic pancreatitis, explained how the disease can affect even the youngest of children. “We have a number of children who come to us from pretty much across the U.S. and Canada who have chronic pancreatitis that is primarily due to genetic reasons,” said Bellin. “It’s pretty unusual in children but a lot of disabilities come with it when it occurs in children sometimes as young as one or two years of age, and the inflation causes severe abdominal pain so they need to be properly diagnosed,” she said. Schwartzman explained the goal of the symposium was to impact future research of chronic

“We have some of the brightest medical students and residents here and in the end, it’s all about educating our next generation as it is to help our patients to diminish human suffering,” he said.

BY JAN GROOVER Jan Groover created her famous Kitchen Still Lifes in 1978 and 1979. Using a large-format camera, she transformed colanders, knives, spatulas and baking pans into objects of beauty that still hold a visual interest that transcends their common use. Her seductively modern color palette of greens, pewter, bronze and brown tonalities permeates the space dissected by kitchen paraphernalia. These take on a new visual meaning as a result of Groover’s juxtaposition of the elements. Although never unrecognizable as everyday objects, these utensils float into an abstract amalgam of planes and shapes. Zolotov crafts a sprawling survey of misanthropy, isolation, and social rejection in the context of contemporary youth culture through intensive artistic studies of the ephemera of Kurt Cobain, the iconic vocalist of Nirvana. The artwork connects how these various elements of the dark side of modern adolescence relate to an ongoing roiling cycle of self-harm, addiction, and ultimately, premature self-destruction among marginalized young people today. Developer William M. Greve’s mausoleum is very grand.

Come see Green-Wood Cemetery’s cherry blossoms

There’s a really nice one where a walkway called Verdant Path intersects with Battle Avenue. If you photograph this tree facing up the hill, your image will include one of the quirkiest mausoleums in the cemetery.

You know spring has really arrived in Brooklyn when the cherry trees blossom beside INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan Green-Wood Cemetery’s landmarked gateway. It’s the tomb of pianist Alfred Ross Parsons and his wife Alice Schuyler Van Ness. They died in the early 1930s. Parsons was an Egyptologist. Their tomb is shaped like an ancient Egyptian pyramid. There’s a sphinx statue out front as well as

statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The Untapped Cities website included the Van Ness-Parsons mausoleum in a posting called “The Five Weirdest Tombs and Mausoleums at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.”

— Continued from page 10INB — You can step closer to the trees via a little walkway called Fir Path.

WILLIAM M. GREVE MAUSOLEUM You might get to the point where you’re weary of walking, no matter how fine the scenery. It would be a shame to stop strolling, though — because you’d miss William M. Greve’s mausoleum and the tremendous cherry blossoms that hang beside it. The tomb looks like a miniature Classical temple. It’s near the modern Hillside Mausoleum, which is close to the cemetery’s McDonald Avenue boundary. Did you know Greve was a developer? As the head of a company called Realty Associates, he built hundreds of bungalows in Gerritsen Beach in the early 1920s.

MINERVA, THE GODDESS OF BATTLE HILL I should mention that Green-Wood’s gates have strict closing hours. When the exits on Fort Hamilton Parkway and Prospect Park West are open, which is weekends and certain holidays, they’re locked up at 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., you’ll have to double back to the main entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. This time of year, the main entrance remains open until 7 p.m. One good way to get to the main entrance is to stroll on Border Avenue. After you walk for a while, turn onto Hemlock Avenue and find your way up onto Battle Hill. As of course you know, this piece of the cemetery is a key site of the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn. Frederick Wellington Ruckstull sculpted Battle Hill’s magnificent statue of Minerva, goddess of war, that commemorates the battle. The most known fact about Minerva is that she lines up perfectly with the Statue of Liberty down in the harbor. Minerva raises her hand in salute to Lady Liberty in a gesture that mirrors Lady Liberty’s gesture of holding up her torch. If you photograph Minerva in profile, you can include nearby cherry trees in the picture.

VAN NESS-PARSONS PYRAMID As you head down Battle Avenue towards Green-Wood’s main gates, you will see other blossoming cherry trees. You Should Know This Fun Facts About Mother’s Day

• In Greek mythology, spring festivals were held in honor of the maternal goddess Rhea. She was the wife of Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many deities. • In 1600s England, Mothering Sunday took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honor of the Virgin Mary. Afterward, children would present their mothers with flowers. • Anna Jarvis was the woman that may have been behind our traditional Mother’s Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Though she never had children of her own, she tirelessly campaigned for the day and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Individuals • Corporations • Small Businesses All At Reasonable Rates

• In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day.

• Unhappy with results of last year's tax return? • Current accountant not taking your calls? • Receiving tax penalty & interest notices? • Tired of preparing your own tax return?

Nationwide Titles Plates . Registration ON THE SPOT PLATES Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from April 30, 1945 ON APRIL 30, 1939, the Eagle reported, “The infinite patience of a St. Albans youth is today demonstrated by the fact that when the silken cord is snipped at 11 a.m., officially opening the World’s Fair to the public for the first time, 20-year-old George Horn will have completed 39 hours waiting at the North Gate to be the first person admitted. Come what may, George’s determination has not been dampened despite the Fair folks who can’t see the humor of the situation and occasionally chase him away. Since 8 o’clock Friday night, young Horn has been camped at the North Gate to the exposition grounds on the Flushing Meadows. Fair police or no Fair police, his claim has been staked, he declares. They may chase him, but the moment the coast is clear he trots back to take up his vigil.”  ON APRIL 30, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Steeplechase Park, the oldest and largest amusement park in Coney Island, will begin its 45th season on Sunday at 1 p.m. Founded in 1896, the giant fun center is expected to have its greatest season as the park has acquired the gem of the late World’s Fair midway, the parachute jump.”  ON APRIL 30, 1945, the Eagle reported, “Paris, April 30 (U.P.) – The notorious Dachau concentration camp seven miles north of Munich – the first and blackest of the political death camps established in the early days of the Hitler regime – was overrun by the 7th Army yesterday. There the Yanks killed or captured 300 SS guards and liberated 32,000 political and religious prisoners who greeted their rescuers with hysterical joy. For hundreds and perhaps thousands of Dachau’s other inmates the Americans came too late. Fifty boxcars were found on a nearby railroad siding, loaded with bodies, torture chambers, gas boxes and other paraphernalia of terror that the Nazi guards were attempting to remove.”  ON APRIL 30, 1948, the Eagle reported, “Joe Pignatano, of 2612 W. 15th St., an 18-year-old catcher, has been signed by the Dodgers to a contract with the Cairo, Ill., club of the Kitty League by scout Art Dede. Pignatano is a graduate of Westinghouse Vocational High School.” Pignatano made his major league debut for the Dodgers in 1957, went west with the team when it moved to Los Angeles and was a member of the 1959 World Champions. He played for the Mets in 1962 and served as the bullpen coach for the 1969 championship team. He will celebrate his 90th birthday on Aug. 4.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from May 2, 1945 ON MAY 2, 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The greatest invasion of eels that has ever come to Brooklyn is causing any amount of trouble to the Department of Water Supply. In one day this week sixty-eight complaints about eels lodged in water pipes reached the office of the deputy commissioner. These complaints came from all parts of the borough. At first the residents of the Heights thought that the visitors were coming to them alone, but now from Williamsburg, Bushwick and many other sections word comes that the drinking water tastes ‘fishy,’ that the pressure is slow or stopped altogether, that hydraulic motors and pipes are clogged, and even that live eels are dangling from the faucets.”  ON MAY 2, 1932, the Eagle reported, “A group of visitors were being shown about the Columbia studios. ‘There’s Kate Smith,’ the proud page boy pointed to the song bird. ‘And there’s Alex Gray and Guy Lombardo and Ruth Etting. Over there is Eddie Dowling conversing with Helen Morgan. There’s Paul Robeson, too.’ ‘Yes,’ one of the bored tourists sighed as he flicked the ash from his cigarette, ‘but where are some of the celebrities?’”  ON MAY 2, 1945, the Eagle reported, “London, May 2 (U.P.) — The German high command admitted today that the survivors of Berlin’s garrison had been splintered into isolated fragments in the government district of the dying capital. Soviet reports said Red Army shock troops were storming the ramparts of the German chancellery, where the Nazis said Adolf Hitler died at a command post yesterday. The brevity and despair of a German communique’s report on Berlin indicated the Nazi command might be about ready to write off the capital. It said: ‘Remnants of the brave garrison of Berlin continue to fight doggedly in the government district, split up in isolated battle groups.’ … Red Army troops were converging from three directions on the spot where the German radio said Hitler went down at his command post and observers speculated whether the Russians would find Hitler’s body or some other evidence to support or refute the report of his death.”
