The 2020 Census is underway.

Here’s what you need to know

Your chance is here to take part in the census, the federal government’s once-in-a-decade effort to get an accurate count of every person living in the country.

The population of Brooklyn is notoriously hard to nail down.

According to the Brooklyn Community Foundation, Kings County is the most difficult county in New York State in which to conduct the census, with over 20 percent of Brooklynites living in neighborhoods classified as “hard to count” by the Census Bureau.

Roughly 33 percent of Brooklynites did not mail back their census forms in 2010, giving Brooklyn the lowest mail return rate in the country among counties with populations over 500,000.

The city’s overall census participation rate was less than 62 percent in 2010, compared with a national average of 76 percent.

Brooklyn’s community leaders are hoping for a better return rate in 2020, since the data gathered helps to determine how much federal money the borough gets for local needs like public education, food assistance programs, infrastructure, affordable housing and more — not to mention how many representatives in congress Brooklyn has.

The high stakes have led the city to invest $40 million in census outreach, including community-based grants, partnerships with the Brooklyn Public Library, field operations and a multilingual marketing campaign called “Get Counted NYC” to drive home the importance of census participation.

Brooklyn households began receiving the first census mailers March 12. The form can be completed online, by phone or by free return mail.

A large crowd in New York City. mation about the people living in your household as of April 1, 2020, including roommates, children, partners and tenants. The Census Bureau estimates it takes about 10 minutes to complete.

The form will not ask for your Social Security number, or about your citizenship status. That last point is important, since, according to a 2019 survey from the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, 42 percent of undocumented immigrants believe a citizenship question is part of the

census, despite the Supreme Court striking the question down.

Forty branches of the Brooklyn Public Library will serve as “census hubs,” with workers onsite to help people complete the census form online.

If you don’t respond to the census form by April, you can expect a census taker to knock on your door sometime in the coming months. The federal employees are also enlisted to count the homeless, students and other hard-to-reach populations.

Maimonides Medical Center, New York Community Hospital to merge

Southwest Brooklyn’s health care system is about to undergo a major change as two venerable institutions, Maimonides Medical Center and New York Community Hospital, announced plans to “integrate” their two organizations.

While the official announcement jointly issued by the two hospitals did not mention the word “merger,” Kenneth Gibbs, president and CEO of Maimonides Medical Center, told the Brooklyn Eagle that the two medical institutions were indeed entering into a type of merger.

“We are coming together and we are in the process of working out a governance structure,” he told this newspaper on Wednesday.

Over the coming months, the two hospitals will be engaging in discussions with their respective communities,

workforces, labor unions and physicians to work out the details.

Gibbs said he was confident that it would take less than six months to develop a governing arrangement.

But any deal between Maimonides Medical Center and New York Community Hospital to integrate the two hospitals would require the approval of the New York State Department of Health.

It’s not clear if either hospital will be changing its name.

Maimonides Medical Center is a 711-bed non-profit tertiary care provider located at 4802 10th Ave. in Borough Park. It is the largest hospital in Brooklyn. Founded in 1911, Maimonides is an affiliate of Northwell Health.

New York Community Hospital, which was founded in 1929, is a 134-bed non-profit acute care hospital at 2525 Kings Highway in Midwood.

The agreement between the two hospitals will give Brooklyn residents the opportunity to receive a full range of health care services within the borough, close to home, officials said. It will also enhance New York Community Hospital’s role as a provider of a range of specialty services and will strengthen Maimonides’ role as a tertiary care destination for patients across Brooklyn.

“We have always believed that the best care is local care,” Gibbs told the Brooklyn Eagle.

The two hospitals began the process of coming together in 2018 when they launched a clinical collaboration agreement that saw Maimonides specialists providing services at the New York Community campus.

The two staffs got along beautifully, officials said.

“It has worked out so well, we decided to take this additional step,” Gibbs said.

“Most integration agreements are directed from the top down, and the staffs have to adjust. This is happening from the bottom up.”

Brooklyn judge returns to her elementary school every year for Dr. Seuss Day

Each year, between 40 and 60 kindergarten and first grade students take part in the annual Read Across America Dr. Seuss Day with the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association.

Just like they have done every year since 2014, members of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association were at P.S. 274 in Bushwick last Monday to participate in Read Across America’s annual Dr. Seuss Day. It’s a tradition in no small part because of the actions of Judge Joanne Quinones, who helped to start the program seven years ago.

“It’s so much fun to come and read to these kids every year,” said Hon. Sylvia Hinds-Radix. “This wouldn’t be possible without the work that Joanne does. Every year, when the BWBA board has its first budgetary meeting at the Women’s Bar, she is there fighting for this to make sure that it is in the budget again.”

Judge Quinones is quick to point out that she didn’t organize the event alone and that a lot of the women who attend every year help out in the planning. She also explained that the inaugural event in 2014 wasn’t even paid for by her or the BWBA, but instead her friends Cheri Gatling, Jacqueline Lawson-Oates, Rachel Villarini, Annette Mutunga and Angela Mitchell footed the bill for much of it.

“The BWBA did pay for the books that we gave to the kids that year so they helped out, but those women were the ones who paid for all of the swag that we gave out that year,” Judge Quinones said.

“Cheri Gatling is a retired police offi-

cer, and she came to the first RAA dressed as the Cat in the Hat,” Judge Quinones continued. “The other women are all clerks or retired court officers and sergeants. They did it as a surprise. I did not know they were doing it and I asked them for not one red cent.”

Every year, a group of about 10 members of the bar association head to the Bushwick elementary school which Judge Quinones attended as a child. They read to the kids, usually kindergarten students and first graders, and they pass out cake, make the children recite an oath to read and give them gift bags.

The purpose is not just to read to the students, although that is certainly the biggest part of it, but also to expose them to judges and lawyers in a setting where they can see that they’re normal people.

“The students really love it and the ones who have done it before really look forward to it,” said Maritza Ollivierra, the principal of P.S. 274. “Joanne is so charismatic and has such a great personality that these kids don’t easily forget this experience.

“It’s such a great day because Dr. Seuss is an author that they know and love, and to get an opportunity to interact with the judges,” Ollivierra continued, “what a memorable experience it is for them. Even some of the other staff and I look forward to it.”

Industry City expansion plan receives boost from Brooklyn BP Eric Adams

Industry City’s contentious waterfront expansion plan received a major win on Monday after Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams issued his recommendations for the rezoning, effectively approving three of four proposed actions — one with conditions — and disapproving the fourth action with conditions.

ping of 40th Street and for a newly mapped “special Industry City District.” He approved with conditions a zoning special permit and disapproved with conditions the creation of special district zoning text. (Approving and disapproving with conditions are virtually the same.)

“These recommendations represent a holistic, comprehensive vision for the future of Industry City, to both address the needs of long-time Brooklynites and revitalize this long-neglected area by promoting the growth of good paying jobs in maker industries for local residents,” Adams said. “We have listened closely to the voices of our community in crafting these recommendations and deeply appreciate their robust input during this process.

“Industry City has the potential, with changes to the application such as those proposed in these recommendations, to become a vibrant, mixed-use project that truly addresses the needs of Sunset Park while continuing Brooklyn’s explosive growth trajectory.”

The entire rezoning process has been extremely contentious, pitting those within the Sunset Park community against one another.

The proposed expansion, a $1 billion redevelopment, would add roughly 1.3 million square feet of space to the complex by 2027. The land use application currently includes academic space and hotels, and expanding “innovation economy” maker spaces and retail. Backers say these changes would help bring in investment and tenants that will drive job growth.

Industry City CEO Andrew Kimball said Industry City expects to create more than 20,000 jobs, attract $1 billion in private development and create educational and training resources through the redevelopment.

Critics of the plan, however, say the rezoning could dramatically reshape Sunset Park, exacerbating displacement and gentrification in the largely immigrant, low-income neighborhood.

They argue any changes to the Brooklyn waterfront should be geared toward adapting to climate change, protecting blue-collar jobs and preserving the working-class character of the area.

Kimball praised Adams’ recommendations, and said his team would continue to work with community leaders as the plan moves forward in the public review process.

“Borough President Eric Adams recognized the merits of this plan that builds for the future of Industry City, particularly its innovative approaches to creating career pathways through academic training and programs that will create greater and more equitable economic opportunity for thousands of New Yorkers,” he said.

The Borough President’s Office is the second legislative body to issue recommendations on the plan. Community Board 7, which represents Sunset Park, voted in January to disapprove two of four proposed actions on the expansion unless 82 conditions are met by both Industry City and city and state agencies.

Adams, along with the community board, City Planning Commission and City Council are required to issue their recommendations as

part of the city’s seven-month Uniform Land Use Review Procedure.

Both the community board and borough president’s recommendations, however, are advisory.

The City Planning Commission will be next to issue their vote by April 6, followed by the City Council.

Councilmember Carlos Menchaca wields the most power in the rezoning battle. His vote in the City Council is crucial to the proposal’s approval, and he has said he would only support the plan with concessions from Industry City and additional community investment from City Hall. (City Hall has so far rebuffed the request.)

Adams hosted a public hearing on the rezoning in January, but he was forced to end it early due to interruptions from the audience. It was the second such gathering on the rezoning that ended prematurely due to disturbances.

CITYWIDE — Brooklyn Public Library President Linda Johnson recently joined library leaders from Queens and Manhattan to call for new funding that would grant amnesty to thousands of children and teens who have racked up fees and fines for overdue books, according to the Brooklyn Eagle website. According to librarians, most of those fines are concentrated in the city’s neediest neighborhoods. “There are families who refuse to even use the library for fear of accumulating fines,” wrote New York Public Library President Anthony Marx. BPL and the Queens and Manhattan systems gave kids a one-time amnesty in 2017. According to Marx, about 11,000 kids and teens who previously were blocked from borrowing books because of fines rekindled their relationship with the library within one month of having their fines waived. 

REAL ESTATE OPEN HOUSES CALLED OFF DUE TO VIRUS

CITYWIDE — Some New York City real estate brokers have called off open houses because of fear of the coronavirus, according to Bloomberg News. “If the coronavirus for some reason — and I hope it doesn’t — goes out of control and New York City faces drastic increases in the virus, that may have a chilling effect,” said Fritz Frigan, executive director of sales and leasing at Halstead, who compiles a weekly index of open house activity across the five boroughs. Frigan told Bloomberg News that his office has even seen a potential seller who was on the fence about whether even to list a property out of concern about having visitors come look at it. 

KPF DESIGNS RENOVATIONS TO RED HOOK HOUSES

RED HOOK — Architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox has designed the redevelopment of a public housing complex in Red Hook that was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy eight years ago.

Thousands of residents of NYCHA’s Red Hook Houses were left without power and access to supplies for more than two weeks following Sandy, according to dezeen, an architecture and design website. KPF’s scheme involves a resiliency and renewal program designed to lessen the community’s vulnerability to natural disasters. The measures include a series of raised flood barriers, an above-ground boiler plant and more, dezeen reported. 

THREE-STORY CONDO BUILDING IN RED HOOK NEARS COMPLETION

RED HOOK — Construction is nearing completion at 730 Hicks St., a three-story condo development in Red Hook, according to New York YIMBY. The building is slated to contain 15 residences, 10 parking spaces, basement-level storage and gardens surrounding the property. The building is being developed by Shiraz Saujana and is designed by Marie Architects. 

NEW HOTEL PLANNED FOR 86TH ST. IN BAY RIDGE

BAY RIDGE — Permits have been filed for a six-story hotel at 634 86th St. in Bay Ridge, on the current site of an auto dealership and lot, according to New York YIMBY. The lot, at the intersection of Battery Avenue and 86th Street, is a short walk to the R train’s 86th Street subway station. Xiaojun Chen, under the name Sunshine Brooklyn LLC, is listed as the developer, and Wu Chen of JWC Architect Engineer is listed as the architect. The proposed development would have 76 rooms, a rear yard and eight enclosed parking spaces. Demolition permits for the auto lot were filed last June. 

NEW BAR EMPHASIZES WINE AND CURED MEATS

PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — And Sons, which Gothamist describes as “an American ham (and wine) bar,” opened about six weeks ago in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, according to the website. It is owned by former waitress Phoebe Damrosch and former sommelier Andre Hueston Mack, and it is named for the couple’s four sons. Mack told Gothamist that he was inspired during trips to Spain and Italy, where such spots are much more common. “The heart of the And Sons experience,” said Gothamist, “is the sliced-to-order selection of country-styled cured hams.” Both the wines and the hams are mainly from the continental United States. 

ANGRY MAN DEFACES COP CAR IN BAY RIDGE

DYKER HEIGHTS — An angry man snapped and took his anger out on a police car in Brooklyn, footage released on Saturday shows. The unidentified man walked up to an NYPD Traffic Enforcement Division vehicle on Seventh Avenue near 92nd Street, according to brooklynreporter.com. After looking over

his shoulder to make sure no one was there, he hurled an unknown object at the windshield, the footage shows. He then ran up and started rapidly punching the car window. Finally, he whacked the passenger’s-side mirror. He is described as a man in his 30s with a beard and was last seen wearing a bright green sweater, blue jeans and brown shoes. 

BROOKLYN ARTIST VISITS GALLERY IN BINGHAMTON

BOROUGHWIDE — Brooklyn artist Jenny Morris visited the Memory Maker Gallery in Binghamton to showcase her own artwork as well as artwork created by people who suffer from memory loss, according to Fox 40, a local channel in Binghamton. Morris spent months working with people who suffer from conditions such as Alzheimer’s to further her thesis about the relationship between memory and art. “We can’t have propriety over this idea of doing art with people with dementia,” said Christina Muscatello, co-founder of the Memory Maker Project. “The idea of the residency really grew out of the idea that we need to continue giving a voice to people with dementia.” 

MOVIE’S NOODLE DISH IS A HIT IN KOREAN RESTAURANTS

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Ram-don, a noodle dish that was essentially invented for the South Korean movie “Parasite,” has become a hit in the city’s Korean restaurants, according to New York Eater. The name ram-don is an amalgamation of ramen and udon, two types of low-cost noodles, which are combined to make a cheaper meal more interesting. Esther Choi, chef and owner of the Brooklyn restaurant Mokbar at 212 Flatbush Ave., says she makes her own noodles to serve in the dish because it “wouldn’t make sense” to serve instant ramen at an upscale noodle shop. Her version features both seafood and beef. 

COUNCILMEMBER LEVIN HONORS IDA B. WELLS

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Councilmember Stephen Levin (D-Boerum Hill-Brooklyn Heights-Downtown Brooklyn-DUMBO-Greenpoint) and other Brooklyn officials hosted a street co-naming ceremony in Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday to honor Ida B. Wells. Wells was a groundbreaking investigative journalist, civil rights leader and feminist. When living in Brooklyn, she published editorials exposing lynching and helped to found the National Association of Colored Women

in 1898. A plaque for Wells was unveiled on the façade of J.P. Morgan Chase at 4 MetroTech during the street co-naming. 

PROTESTERS SLAM ALLEGED ASSAULT BY POLICE

CANARSIE — Hundreds of protesters rallied outside the 69th Precinct in Canarsie Saturday to demand answers after a video captured police officers tackling a 20-year-old man during an arrest for alleged marijuana possession, according to the Brooklyn Paper. The video posted to Twitter showed a plainclothes officer holding Fitzroy Gayle at gunpoint just before a group of officers tackled him to the group, as the young man screamed. Police said Gayle was smoking marijuana outside 100% Playground on Glenwood Road and had resisted arrest, but his attorney said his client had not committed any crimes, the Brooklyn Paper said. “We had a rally outside the precinct calling on the district attorney of Brooklyn to investigate this heinous kidnapping and assault,” said Rev. Kevin McCall of the Crisis Action Center in Brownsville. 

REFINANCE BOOM HAS LENDERS SCRAMBLING TO MEET DEMAND

CITYWIDE — A sharp drop in mortgage interest rates has sparked a sudden and unexpected refinance boom that has lenders scrambling to handle the large volume, according to CNBC. The stress on the lending market is keeping mortgage rates higher than they could be. Mortgage rates hit 3.11 percent on Monday, CNBC said. One borrower who called Bank of America on Saturday was told there would be a two-hour wait to speak with a loan officer. At Cross Country Mortgage, a small lender in Boca Raton, Florida, phones were ringing before 8 a.m. on Monday. 

CROWN HEIGHTS RESTAURANT OFFERS VEGAN ETHIOPIAN FARE

CROWN HEIGHTS — Crown Heights’ newest restaurant, Ras Plant Based, brings an Ethiopian presence to the neighborhood, according to Patch. The owners, chef Romeo Regali and his wife Milka, also own the Cobble Hill Ethiopian restaurant Awash. The new restaurant features a menu centered around an Ethiopian platter consisting of a variety of vegan options, from collard greens to red lentil stew, served over a traditional spongy flatbread. Other items include a vegan kebab, traditional Ethiopian coffee, vegan desserts and more.

The restaurant is at 739 Franklin Ave. near Sterling Place, Patch said.

Irish eyes were certainly smiling at the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade dinner dance as elected officials, family and friends gathered to salute this year’s esteemed parade marshals.

Honorees for the 27th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade — which will be held on Sunday, March 22 — were recognized at the gala event

which took place at El Caribe at 5945 Strickland Ave. in Mill Basin on Saturday, March 7.

The 2019 parade’s grand marshal is community leader Linda Gallagher-Lomanto.

“I’m very humbled and proud that the committee has chosen me to lead the 27th Bay Ridge St Patrick’s Day Parade down Third Avenue,” Gallagher-Lomanto told this paper.

“The parade committee and its sponsors have done a wonderful job keeping Irish culture and heritage thriving in Bay Ridge.

Deputy marshals for the 27th annual parade include Meaghan McGoldrick, Judy Conway, Tracy McDonagh-Joerss, Eileen Tynion, Kristine Woods-Hansen, Eric DiRamio, Christopher Cody, Steven McEvoy, Billy Murphy and John Ward.

“It’s such a tremendous honor to be a deputy marshal at this year’s parade,” said Tynion.

“It’s the thrill of a lifetime and I have my family and friends here with me tonight. I’m just delighted,” she added.

McGoldrick said that it felt very surreal to be honored. “It’s very humbling to be recognized as a deputy marshal, and I’m just thrilled to keep the tradition going.”

The honorary Irishman of the year was Romeo Petric, who was born in Zadar, Croatia, but has served as parish athletic representative for the CYO Sports program at St. Patrick since 2002. He has also been involved in nearly every facet of the parish’s sports programs for over 25 years including soccer, baseball, basketball and

swimming, as well as serving as the commissioner for each program.

“I’m humbled and honored to be the Bay Ridge Parade’s honorary Irishman,” said Petric.

“There’s no better place and no better people.”

The Claddagh Award recipients were Barbara Slattery, Bill Boshell and Tom Maclellan.

Elected officials and community leaders attending included U.S. Rep. Max Rose, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, former State Sen. Marty Golden,

former New York State Conservative Party Chair Mike Long and attorney Mike Connors, his wife Beth and son Michael Connors.

This year’s honorary Irish family of the year recognition was bestowed upon the Mayrose family and its patriarch and matriarch, Arthur and Eileen Mayrose.

“Initially, I thought the recognition was just for me alone and I really wasn’t sure about it,” Arthur told this paper.

“But then they said, ‘No, we

mean your entire family,’ and then I thought, oh, this will really be fun because when you look at the entire family from my oldest son Eddie to my youngest granddaughter Maeve, everybody has done something in sports, has done something with mentoring young kids, fundraising for various churches in the community; everyone in the family has done something remarkable. You don’t realize it because being involved has just always been our way of life,” he added.

id you know Bath Beach was named for England’s famous spa town, Bath?

I hadn’t strolled around this charming Brooklyn neighborhood in the longest time.

When the sun came out the other day, the idea of taking a long walk by the glittering waters of Gravesend Bay, then looping through quiet streets looking for modernized Victorian houses, was irresistible.

An escape into the fresh air, where I found fab scenery, flocks of seagulls and a view of one of my favorite bridges, cheered me up immensely. Isn’t that what everybody needs these days — a little cheering up?

One of Bath Beach’s most alluring features is a pedestrian and cycling path at the edge of the neighborhood, right on the shoreline, with the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge rising high above the water.

So yeah, the Belt Parkway is there too, on the other side of a barrier. But I’m a very finicky person, and I don’t find the highway’s proximity too troubling. The sound of the passing cars is like white noise.

Bath Beach’s waterside pathway is an extension of Bay Ridge’s popular Shore Road Promenade. I’m a big fan of the Bay Ridge end of the promenade, and I’ve published photos of it many times, in sunshine and in fog. The Bath Beach end of the path is pretty great, too.

AMERICA’S LONGEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag. On Bath Beach’s waterside promenade.

Before you head for Bath Beach, I should mention that you’ll need a heavier jacket than the day’s weather report suggests.

Gravesend Bay’s waters are cold this time of year, and the breeze that comes off them is chilly.

If you don’t live in Bath Beach, the easiest way to get to the shoreline promenade is to ride the R train to its terminus at 95th Street and Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge.

Walk down Fourth Avenue for several blocks. Along the way, you’ll notice Cannonball Park. That’s what Bay Ridge residents call John Paul Jones Park. A 58-ton, Civil War-era cannon is on display there.

At the end of Fourth Avenue, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge looms large. The promenade runs beneath it. Turn left, in the opposite direction from Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

Gravesend Bay begins at the bridge and stretches down to Sea Gate.

If you’re obsessed with taking pictures like I am, you’re going to stop a lot during your walk along the shoreline and turn yourself and your camera back towards the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

It’s America’s longest suspension bridge, with a 4,260-footlong main span. Othmar Ammann, a structural engineer who was Bath Beach’s shoreline promenade offers a terrific view of the born in Switzerland, designed it. It opened in 1964.

INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan You probably recall that for a half-century it was the VerrazanoNarrows Bridge with one “Z,” instead of two “Z”s like namesake explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano’s spelling. In October 2018, A MILITARY INSTALLATION’S TWO CENTURIES OLD Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill to correct this typo.

When you start walking on the promenade, before Bath Beach homes come into view, you’ll see Fort Hamilton. It has the distinction of being New York City’s only active military base.

The fort was established in 1825. On special occasions, civilians are invited onto the premises. Several years ago, I had the honor of attending Fort Hamilton’s 9/11 commemorative ceremony.

On Sunday, when I was out on my waterside stroll, I saw a cargo ship heading towards Manhattan and a tiny tugboat pulling a big barge beneath the bridge. Runners and cyclists politely gave me a wide berth as I stood at a railing along the water, snapping photos.

High clouds made pretty patterns in the azure sky.

Whenever I was walking instead of gazing backwards at the bridge, I could see the top of the landmarked Coney Island Parachute Jump in the distance.

As I kept walking, the promenade became a double-lane pathway with a grassy median.

FEED THE BIRDS, TUPPENCE A BAG At Bay 8th Street, there’s a hill with a staircase that leads to an overpass connecting the rest of Bath Beach to the promenade. It’s worthwhile to climb the stairs for a bird’s eye view of the promenade, the bay and the bridge.

Back down on the shoreline, there are benches if you want to linger and look at the water. When I was there on Sunday, a gentleman sat on one of the benches and fed seagulls and pigeons.

They swirled around him like an avian tornado.

A second overpass connecting the shoreline and the rest of Bath Beach can be found at 17th Avenue. These stairs also offer an excellent vantage point from which to see the promenade and Gravesend Bay. When seagulls aren’t being fed, they congregate on the rocky shoreline. Three of the birds flew up onto the railing along the promenade and stayed still long enough for me to snap a photo.

SAY SO LONG TO THE SHORELINE The promenade comes to an end at the edge of Bensonhurst Park, which is at the bottom of Bay Parkway.

If you find it hard to leave the soothing shoreline, there’s a cluster of benches where you can sit and take a last look at Gravesend Bay. Eventually you should continue your walk, though. There are beautiful homes and an eye-catching NYPD stationhouse to see on the inland streets.

As you turn up Bay Parkway, you’ll see Ceasar’s Bay Shopping Center. According to a posting on the Hey Ridge website, it’s spelled C-E-A-sar like its namesake, Ceasar Salama.

Keep walking and you’ll pass a section of Bensonhurst Park that’s undergoing a $6.5 million renovation. It’s at the corner of Cropsey Avenue and Bay Parkway.

Any direction you choose is a good direction for a walk in Bath Beach. I decided to turn onto Bath Avenue, then loop around on Benson Avenue back to Bay Parkway.

Continued from page 12 INB I was afraid I would run out of time, so I left Cropsey Avenue out of my walk.There are lots of beautiful houses there. Several years ago, I took pictures of them.

Low-rise Bath Avenue is lined with grocers, medical offices, pharmacies and interesting places to eat.

TERRIFIC TURRETS Many Bath Beach homes are mid-20th century attached brick rowhouses with garages on their bottom floors. I dearly love this type of housing stock, which can be found in numerous neighborhoods outside Brooklyn’s Brownstone Belt.

But I also love the standalone Victorian houses that dot Bath Beach. They’ve got turrets and porches and panache. They’ve been modernized with siding. Some have walled-in porches. So what? They’re beautiful.

America’s largest concentration of Victorian wooden houses can be found in a cluster of Flatbush neighborhoods that includes Prospect Park South and Ditmas Park. The iconic homes are also scattered through southern Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge and Bath Beach.

As I walked along Bath and Benson avenues, I glanced up each side street. If I spotted a Victorian house, I walked over for a closer look. It was kind of like an Easter egg hunt when the eggs are placed out in the open. A quick look is all it took to find them.

One of Bath Beach’s Victorian gems is 122 Bay 26th St., which has a turret, a wraparound porch and an enormous yard.

It’s not in the best of shape. But it’s lovely.

A STELLAR STATIONHOUSE Another fine sight is a pair of homes at 8730 20th Ave. and 8732 20th Ave. Turrets on the corners of these houses look like silos.

To give you a rough idea of how Bath Beach Victorians are priced, the property at 8730 20th Ave., which is a two-family home, sold for $1.4 million in 2015, city Finance Department records indicate.

A couple blocks further down Bath Avenue, at the corner of Bay 22nd Street, you’ll see a distinguished wedge-shaped building. It’s red brick with stone cladding on its ground floor and has a band of green-hued ornamentation below its roof.

This is the 62nd Precinct Police Station, as the name over the front door tells you. The building’s address is 1925 Bath Ave. The neighborhoods included in the 62nd Precinct are Bath Beach, Bensonhurst and Mapleton.

A few years ago, volunteers did extensive interior restoration, my colleague Paula Katinas reported.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE TRAIN TRACKS I can’t end this story without mentioning a trio of big, beautiful old houses.

They include 79 Bay 25th St., which is on the corner of Benson Avenue, then 75 Bay 25th St., then 67-69 Bay 25th St. The last house I mentioned is clad in green-painted shingles and has an enormous front porch. City Buildings Department records suggest it was constructed in 1924.

Even with Daylight Saving Time, sunset arrives all too soon when you’re walking around taking photos. When it got too late to take any more pictures, I turned left on Bay Parkway and headed up to 86th Street, which is considered the border of Bath Beach and Bensonhurst.

There’s a D train station on the corner if you want to go home.

Or you can get a bite to eat on 86th Street. There are lots of restaurants and cafes.

If you’re in the mood for an additional adventure, you can continue east on 86th Street to Gravesend, where you’ll find popular pizzeria L&B Spumoni Gardens.

WITCHES’ HATS As I continued walking on Bath Avenue, a terrific Victorian house at 137 Bay 11th St. caught my eye. The roof on its slender turret is shaped like a dinner bell.

I also noticed the skinny turret on the house at 1465 Bath Ave., which is on the corner of 15th Avenue.

Some big houses are eye-pleasing even though they don’t have Victorian architectural flourishes — for instance, four homes with sharply peaked roofs at 143, 145, 147 and 149 Bay 8th St. When I got to the end of Bath Avenue, I turned onto 14th Avenue, walked up the block and then turned again onto Benson Avenue. I saw some beautiful homes I couldn’t photograph because the late-afternoon sun was right behind them.

I did get a picture of a row of four Victorian houses that have rectangular towers topped with little roofs shaped like witch’s hats.

Their addresses are 57 to 69 Bay 11th St.

ENDLESS SUNSHINE As I continued along Benson Avenue, one of the most eyecatching buildings I saw was a modern brick and glass property on the corner of 18th Avenue. This is the Italian-American Cultural Community Center, also known as Il Centro. It has classrooms, a fitness facility, a swimming pool and event space.

Nearby, on the corner of Benson Avenue and Bay 20th Street, stunning St. Finbar stands. This Roman Catholic parish was established in 1880, when the village of Bath Beach was a mix of farms, resort homes, hotels and yacht clubs.

This Victorian home at 122 Bay 26th St. has a large lawn.

INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan The parish’s website says the man who donated the site where the church was originally built, William Swayne, was from County Cork in Ireland. He asked that the church be named for St. Finbar, who was the first Bishop of Cork.

According to a posting on Catholic Online, legend has it that when St. Finbar died, which was around the year 633, the sun didn’t set for two weeks.

New head coach guides Brooklyn to second straight victory

A late-season coaching change, the ongoing battle to safeguard against the Coronavirus and a showdown against one of the best teams in the NBA weren’t enough to stop the resurgent Brooklyn Nets in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 23 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 28.3 seconds remaining, as Brooklyn improved to 2-0 under new Head Coach Jacque Vaughn by holding off LeBron James and the Lakers, 104-102, in front of 18,997 fans at the Staples Center.

Dinwiddie’s elbow jumper proved to be the final points of a game that saw the Nets (30-34) open a four-game West Coast swing with one of their most impressive wins of the year.

And it almost wasn’t.

James fed Anthony Davis for a wide-open three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded, but the ball bounded harmlessly off the rim, leaving Brooklyn unbeaten in two games since Vaughn stunningly replaced former Head Coach Kenny Atkinson on Saturday morning.

“It feels good because it’s a high-quality opponent on the road for a team that is doing its best right now to continue to find itself,” admitted Dinwiddie, one of several Nets who blossomed into a legitimate NBA regular under Atkinson.

Though there continues to be speculation regarding both the timing and reasoning behind Atkinson’s dismissal, as well as ongoing restrictions and safeguards against the worldwide virus scare, the Nets have flourished over the past week, winning three in a row and four of their last five games.

Vaughn, who replaced the longest-tenured coach of the Brooklyn era over the weekend, watched from the sideline as Davis launched what many thought would be the game-winning shot.

“It’s like the joy and pain of basketball,” Vaughn said. “I had the perfect sight line. I see it leave, just watching the flight of it. Looked to see if his feet were behind the line, so I said, ‘This is a three-ball.

We’re either losing this thing, or we’re going to win this thing.’”

Ultimately, they won, knocking off the team that had beaten 11 of its previous 12 opponents, including league-best Milwaukee last Friday night, and still owns the top record in the Western Conference.

Though it is a small sample size, the Nets, along with their new coach, are eager to continue building momentum as they continue their trip tonight at Golden State.

“Obviously, we’ve gone through injuries and the coaching change as well. There’s been a ton of up and down,” noted Dinwiddie.

“And the [Lakers are] one of the top, what, three teams in the league, right? The championship contenders, Lakers, Clippers and Bucks. So, it’s big for a team that’s learning and going to try to be a champion to add this win.”

The New York Islanders were happy to get a point in their latest loss Tuesday night in Vancouver.

But one look at the Eastern Conference playoff standings might change their rosy outlook.

Brock Nelson scored a pair of goals, including the game-tying tally in the third period, but the Isles still dropped their seventh straight game, suffering a 5-4 shootout defeat to the Canucks in front of 18,871 fans at Rogers Arena.

“It seems like we’re close, but we just have to find that puck or that play that is going to get us over the hump right now and turn it around,” Nelson said after New York opened a four-game road trip by falling one point behind Carolina and Columbus for the final two postseason spots in the East.

“It seems like everything is stacked up against us a bit… We did a lot of good things today; I think we’re close.”

Close hasn’t been nearly good enough for the Isles (35-23-10), who have gone 0-3-4 since posting a 4-1 victory over San Jose at the renovated Nassau Coliseum on Feb. 23.

Andrew Ladd scored his first goal of the season, Jordan Eberle also tallied and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for New York before allowing J.T. Miller’s shootout goal that left the Isles on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.

“Good point,” Isles Head Coach Barry Trotz said, putting a positive spin on the worst slide his team has endured during his two-year tenure at the helm.

“You have to take every point. You worry about the points you can get,” he added. “Obviously, we put a point on the board tonight and we’ll just have to try to get another point or two next game. Keep doing that and we’ll look up after 82 and see where we are.”

The Isles will continue their trip tonight in Calgary before visiting Edmonton tomorrow and Pittsburgh on Sunday.

ISLE HAVE ANOTHER: Ladd, who has played sparingly these past two seasons due to a pair of knee injuries, lit the lamp for the first time since Oct. 30, 2018, against the Canucks. “It’s fun to be back in that room, playing with those guys and contributing,” Ladd said. “Hopefully, we can get it going in the right direction here and string a few wins together here. I’m confident if we play like that every night, we’ll get the result.”
