A CONEY ISLAND STREET NAMED AFTER A LOCAL HERO The corner of Surf Avenue and West 12th Street was co-named on Monday, July 15 in memory of P.O. Leon Fox, who was killed there in the line of duty in 1941. Among those present for the ceremony were Fox’s son, who was seven when his father was killed, and 92-year-old Leo Katz, who was a school child at the time who Fox used to shepherd across the street to keep him safe. Majority of Board 11 residents were born outside of U.S Health Dept. study finds large number of immigrants BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM
Bensonhurst and Bath Beach are proving to be hospitable places for immigrants, according to an eye-opening study conducted by the New York City Department of Health. The Community Health Profile for Community Board 11, conducted in 2018 by DOH and released earlier this year, found that 56 percent of the residents living in the Board 11 area were born outside of the U.S. “I’m surprised the number isn’t higher,” Board 11 Chairperson Bill Guarinello told the Home Reporter. “We have always been a neighborhood with a lot of immigrants, except that years ago, it was mostly Italian immigrants. Over the past 10 years, we have had a huge influx of Asians. We also had a lot of Russians moving in and Eastern Europeans. And we have a lot of Hispanic folks living here. It’s much more of a melting pot now. But I would say the majority of newcomers are Asian.” Board 11 has a total population of 204,829 and includes Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Mapleton and parts of Gravesend. The 56 percent figure represents the highest percentage of foreign-born residents of any community board in Brooklyn, according to the DOH, which put together a community health profile for

There are 18 community boards in Brooklyn. DOH looked at everything from life expectancy to obesity rates to college graduation rates to the percentage of the population that cools their homes off with air conditioners. The second highest percentage of immigrants in Brooklyn can be found in Community Board 13, where 53 percent of the population is foreign-born. Board 13 covers Coney Island and Seagate as well as parts of Gravesend and Brighton Beach. Community Board 6, which covers Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, the
Columbia Street Waterfront, Gowanus and parts of Red Hook, has the lowest percentage of immigrants, 17 percent. Ligia Guallpa, executive director of the Worker’s Justice Project, a non-profit organization that helps immigrants, said she was pleased to hear about DOH’s findings for Community Board 11. “When the Census was done in 2010, I was disappointed by the result because I felt that it did not truly capture the diversity of Community Board 11. It’s wonderful to see an official city report that truly reflects the diversity in the community. When we’re talking about Bensonhurst, we’re
talking about immigrants from all over the world,” she told the Home Reporter. And there is diversity even within the same ethnic group, according to Guallpa. “Even within the Latino community, there are different languages spoken, not just Spanish,” she said, listing Mayan as an example. Recognizing the need to have Board 11 reflect the diversity of the neighborhoods it represents, Guarinello and District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia have made a concerted effort in recent years to encourage Asians, Latinos and Middle Easterners to apply for membership.

Bus bulbs are curb extensions that allow buses to stop and board passengers without exiting the travel lane. Bus pads are more-durable sections of pavement installed at bus stops which prevent the common problem of deteriorated asphalt in areas where buses make frequent stops. The project also includes a
trench restoration with full street reconstruction on 20th Avenue from 86th Street to Benson Avenue, and safety improvements at the intersection of Benson Avenue and 20th Avenue. Rose led the delegation, along with his fellow Congressmembers Jerrold Nadler, Carolyn Maloney, Yvette Clarke, Nydia Velázquez and Hakeem Jeffries, in calling for the federal government to support the project to improve bus safety and accessibility in the southern part of the borough. The six U.S. reps wrote a letter to K. Jane Williams, acting administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, citing recent accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles throughout the region and specifically in Bensonhurst, claiming the improvements are critical to ensuring Brooklynites are able to get where they need to go safely. The letter also addressed the need for improved service on the subway system. “South Brooklyn is a particularly underserved area when it comes to public transportation,” the letter read. “Not only are subway stations sparse when compared with other neighborhoods of New York City, but also the service on these lines are some of the worst in the MTA system. As a result, bus service is often the only reliable way for Brooklynites to get about their daily lives.” The letter continued, “This
project will help to significantly improve safety and accessibility at bus stops currently located under an elevated rail line. At most of these locations, subway columns prevent buses from accessing the curb and bus riders are forced to wait for, board, and alight the bus in the middle of the street. This leaves bus riders vulnerable to collisions with vehicles and also results in bus stops which are inaccessible for the elderly and disabled, who may require the aid of the bus ramp/lift. In light of recent and tragic accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles in Brooklyn, and Bensonhurst specifically, these improvements are critical to ensuring Brooklynites are able to get where they need to go, safely.” Rose was adamant that these fixes needed to be implemented immediately. “Our transportation options and reliability is bad enough in South Brooklyn, but no one should have to be standing in the middle of the road to wait for or board their bus,” Rose told this paper. “We’ve seen too many tragedies on our streets,” he added. “I believe DOT’s proposal to improve safety and accessibility is an important step, and I hope the federal government hears our pleas because we cannot continue with the status quo.” This paper reached out to the MTA for a comment, and was told that this was a DOT matter. The DOT had not responded by our deadline.

They want to live near where they work. People had families who settled here so they moved in, too.”
The Community Health Profile is important because it provides a wealth of information neighborhood officials could use in their dealings with the city, according to Board 11 District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia. “It’s a fascinating report. We will utilize it,” she told the Home Reporter. “We have a large population of people, but our city services have not kept pace.”
For Amanda Rich, who takes a city bus to work, the improvements would be welcome. “Due to MTA budget cuts, and poor subway service in our community, local bus service has been the best way for me to get to work and back,” said Rich. “Still, many improvements are needed along the bus route,” she said. “Subway
columns prevent buses from accessing the curb, which leaves some commuters standing in the street or on the curb to flag a bus down. For seniors and people with disabilities or passengers with small children this is a liability, and for someone like myself who’s vertically challenged at 5’1”, these improvements will make a big difference.”

It was a spectacular day in Shore Road Park on Sunday, July 14 as the Arab American community gathered to celebrate their culture and heritage in Bay Ridge at the 13th Annual Bay Ridge Arab American Bazaar, a well-attended celebration of Arab American culture and heritage. There were live musical performances, food stations, henna artists, calligraphists, vendors, as well as face painting and other activities for the kids. Guests were met with the sweet smell of Middle Eastern food favorites such as shish kabob, kibbeh, falafel, tabbouleh, spinach pies and kafta. Among the elected officials and civic leaders attending were Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus; City Councilmember
Justin Brannan; Capt. Robert Conwell, commanding officer of the 68th Precinct; Dr. Habib Joudeh, chief executive officer of the Artisans of Medicine and Arab American Association Vice President; and community activist Linda Sarsour. “It’s a great feeling to be here today,” said Joudeh, a community leader and activist who owns two pharmacies in Bay Ridge. “We have a large attendance and a lot of people around us and we’re very grateful for everyone stopping by.” “I like to think of Bay Ridge as the original home to everyone from everywhere, and it’s organizations like the Arab American Association of New York that keep that feeling alive,” Brannan said. Frontus said she was elated to attend the event. “Fantastic music, dancing and food — this is why people love Bay Ridge,” she said.

Nearly 80 years after Police Officer Leon Fox was killed there in the line of duty, the corner of Surf Avenue and West 12th Street was conamed in his memory on Monday, July 15. Around 100 local residents, police and city officials, friends and family members gathered to celebrate Fox’s life and legacy at a poignant ceremony at the intersection, moments before the unveiling of the street sign for “Leon Fox Way.” In February 1941, Fox was escorting the manager of a Coney Island movie theater to the bank to deposit the day’s earnings. As they neared the
bank, three men approached them and grabbed the manager’s suitcase. They fired at Fox at least six times, then got into their vehicle and drove away. Already seriously wounded, Fox shot at the suspects as they fled. He was later pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. Fox served at the 60th Precinct for a decade. “For several years now, we have planned and prepared for this day, understanding how important it is to present Police Officer Leon Fox’s story,” said City Councilmember Chaim Deutsch, who represents the 48th Council District. “The man was known and loved by thousands of local residents, and it seemed inconceivable that he was gone.”
Beloved Bay Ridge bistro Circles Café has closed for good BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM
It seems like Circles Café and Grill has been a part of the fabric of the Bay Ridge neighborhood since it first opened its doors in 1976. Now the beloved bistro has quietly closed the doors of its most recent location, 6931 Third Ave., and disconnected the phone. The restaurant’s original location was at 310 Bay Ridge Ave. The owners opened an additional shop at 9023 Third Ave., where it remained until 2015 before being replaced by Pipin’s Pub, which itself had relocated from its original home of over four decades at 97th Street and Third Avenue. When the Bay Ridge Avenue Circles closed, it moved to the space once occupied by Cangiano’s Pork
Store, which shut its doors in October 2011. Moe Sayed, a real estate broker whose company Realtynerd is listing the property, confirmed that Circles has officially closed. “One of their chefs died this past year and they decided to close the business,” Sayed told this paper. City Councilmember Justin Brannan was surprised by the news. “Last I heard, they had hooked up with a new partner and were looking good,” Brannan told this paper. Bob Howe, president of the Merchants of Third Avenue, said he knew one of the owners, John Fahy, and was surprised to hear the news. “We’re sorry to see them go and hopefully they will open again in some shape or form along the avenue in the near future,” Howe said.
According to Deutsch, it was Police Officer Albert Mammon’s idea to name the street after Fox. When he was assigned to the 60th Precinct several years ago, Mammon learned of the story and urged the councilmember to sponsor legislation to co-name the street in Fox’s honor. Deutsch added, “At a time when police officers are under so much scrutiny… it is so important that we show our respect and gratitude to the difficult job that they do each and every day.” Gerald Fox, who now lives in California and is Fox’s only son, was just seven years old when his dad perished. “It was a terrible, terrible thing that happened to him,” Fox said. He said his mother remarried several times subsequently, but her love for his father was undying. Before she died at a nursing home, she reportedly told her son, “Remember your father. He was my first and only true love.” After Mammon recited Kaddish, a Jewish prayer for

Search begins for new executive director of Riders Alliance

One of New York’s leading transit advocacy groups is looking for a new leader. John Raskin, co-founder and executive director of the Riders Alliance, recently announced he is leaving his post at the end of the year. Raskin, who lives in downtown Brooklyn, has served at the helm since he helped launch the group seven years ago. Under Raskin’s leadership, the Riders Alliance successfully fought for congestion pric-
ing to raise revenue for the city’s troubled transit system and the Fair Fares program, in which poverty-stricken New Yorkers can purchase MetroCards at half price. “I will miss working every day with this extraordinary team, and I will miss our dedicated members who have contributed time and sweat and dollars and everything else to build up the Riders Alliance and win significant victories for public transportation,” Raskin said. Founded in 2012, the Riders Alliance has more than 1,000
members and a staff of 10 employees. The group operates with an annual budget of $1.5 million. Prior to founding the Riders Alliance, Raskin served as chief of staff to Daniel Squadron when Squadron was a Democratic state senator representing Brooklyn Heights. The Riders Alliance became well known for its innovative and attention-grabbing tactics aimed at convincing Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio and lawmakers to work to improve transit service. The organization introduced the hashtag #CuomosMTA to
bring attention to deteriorating subway service and had members ride the trains with a cardboard cutout of Cuomo to demonstrate how the governor holds sway over the MTA. The Riders Alliance is conducting a search for Raskin’s successor and has posted the job listing for executive director at www.ridersny.org/jobs. Raskin vowed to stay involved in the organization. “I will continue as a dedicated member, because I believe deeply in the need to fix our transit system and the capacity of this powerful grassroots movement to make it happen,” he said.

Argument leads to stabbing in Bay Ridge, two victims listed in stable condition

One man was taken into surgery with a stomach injury and another nursed a wounded arm after an argument turned violent in Bay Ridge on Monday, according to a police source. The two men were stabbed
around 4:45 p.m. on the corner of 78th Street and Fifth Avenue in the 68th precinct. The two victims were arguing with the perpetrator when he quickly slashed the two — one in the left arm and one in the stomach — and fled the scene, police said. The 58-year-old man who was stabbed in the stomach was taken into surgery at NYU Langone
Hospital-Brooklyn and is now in stable condition. Footage taken after the incident shows the second victim leading police to the nearby bodega and motioning down 78th street towards Fourth Avenue, potentially pointing to where the perpetrator fled. According to police, the investigation is ongoing.

The NYPD is seeking two male suspects for questioning in connection with the June 28 robbery of a Sunset Park corner store. According to the NYPD, the suspects allegedly arrived at the closed shop at 5101 Sixth Ave. in the 72nd Precinct around 4 a.m. and used a bolt cutter to break through the locks on the front gate. They forced the door open using a pry bar and entered the store, from which they stole roughly $3,000 in cash, plus Lotto tickets valued at approximately $200, before fleeing the area. The men are described as Hispanic males between 3040 years of age. In the shop’s surveillance footage from the night of the robbery, the suspects wore hooded sweatshirts. The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the men’s identities to call the confidential Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). For Spanish, call 1888-57-PISTA (74782). GOLD DIGGER: An apartment near 98th Street and Shore Road was broken into on July 11 around 12:22 a.m. and the unknown thief made off with over $15,000 of items, including $1,600 cash and $14,000 worth of gold jewelry, belonging to the 59-year-old woman who lives there. Cops say the crook broke in through the fire escape window, pushing in the air conditioner. The perp left through the front door. No arrests have been made. FOUR ATTACK ONE: A 21-year-old man was attacked by four men at Shore Road
and 96th Street on July 9 around 1 p.m. According to reports, the suspects, all described to be in their mid20s, grabbed his head and smashed it against the concrete floor. No arrests have been made. MAN BEATEN WITH BAT, BRASS KNUCKLES: A 21-year-old man was attacked by two men on 86th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues on July 8 at around 9 p.m. Cops say the man was standing outside his home speaking with a friend when the two suspects — both of whom were known by the victim — ran up to him, and struck him in the head and body with a bat and brass
knuckles. One of the suspects is described as a 21-year-old man, around 6’0”. The other suspect is around 25 years old and also around 6’0”. The victim sustained swelling and cuts to the head, and broken teeth. No arrests have been made. BAD HAIR DAY: A hair salon at Third Avenue and 76th Street was broken into on July 8, at around noon, and around $900 was stolen, according to police. Cops say the crook got in by pushing in an air conditioner in the side window, and stole the cash from the bottom drawer underneath the cash register. No arrests have been made.

VASE ATTACK: A 36year-old woman was arrested for allegedly hitting her 63year-old father in the head with
a glass vase on July 5 at around 7:45 p.m. According to the police, the alleged assailant’s father told them that she suffers from depression. The alleged assault occurred inside an apartment on 23rd Avenue between Benson and Cropsey avenues. The victim was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn for treatment. BAD DELIVERY: A wallet containing over $1,000 was stolen on July 5 after its owner, a 31-year-old man, dropped it in front of his home near 67th Street and 17th Avenue as he got out of his car. Surveillance video shows a male USPS employee picking up the wallet and walking away with it. No arrests have been made.

he avenue was packed on Friday night, July 12 as revelers took to the streets to enjoy the first night of this year’s annual Summer Stroll series. It was a sea of people walking along Third Avenue in Bay Ridge between 80th and 90th streets with an array of food, music, entertainment and activities for kids of all ages. Restaurants along the strip had bands playing and outdoor seating so strollers could stop and take in the sights. Outside Chadwick’s Restaurant at 88th Street, a band played while people danced in the street. Bay Ridge’s Summer Stroll is part of DOT’s Weekend Walks program, which was created to allow communities to use streets as public spaces. The event was presented by the Merchants of Third Avenue along with state Sen. Andrew

BAY RIDGE — The most recent Bay Ridge location of Circles Café and Grill has closed its doors at 6931 Third Ave. and disconnected its phone, according to Brookynreporter.com. The restaurant’s original location, which opened in 1976 was 310 Bay Ridge Ave. The owners opened an addition Bay Ridge location at 9023 Third Ave., which lasted until 2015. “One of [Circles’] chefs died this past year, and they decided to close the business,” Moe Sayed, a real estate broker who is listing the property, told Brooklynreporter.com. Councilmember Justin Brannan said of Circle’s owners, “They were hard workers who lived in the community and were involved in the community.”

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Bedford-Stuyvesant has turned into a “hotbed of construction,” with about 27 percent of all homes on the market being within a football field’s distance of an active construction site, according to Patch. “Moving to Kings County might not necessarily bring you peace and tranquility, at least in the near term as the borough’s building book continues,” said Nur Gonen, data scientist for Localize.city, a real estate research website. Localize.city warned house- or apartment-hunters, especially those who look at properties at night, to investigate the neighborhood before they sign a lease. According to a Patch survey, Bed-Stuy was Brooklyn’s second-busiest neighborhood, just behind Williamsburg.
BOROUGHWIDE — On Friday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams joined elected officials and health experts at Borough Hall to urge Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O’Neill to include mediation and mindfulness training in a recently announced NYPD Health and Wellness Task Force. Since the beginning of 2019, six police officers have taken their own lives. “The stress and trauma that our police officers face on a daily basis, where they are frequently forced to make life-ordeath decisions, are all too familiar to me as a former NYPD captain and member of the force,” said Adams, speaking at Borough Hall. “The job of a New York City police officer has always been a stressful one, but policing today is more mentally and environmentally taxing that ever before,” added Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.
BROWNSVILLE — On July 27, 30 Brooklyn kids will get a chance to run their own business, according to Brooklyner. Through the National Lemonade Day program, they have been drafting business plans and learning about finance. Finally, they will sell their lemonade at the Brownsville Recreation Center. Children who participate mainly are referred by the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corp., although some sign up individually. “When you see how inspired kids are when they actually start collecting money, it’s a pretty powerful thing,” said Bryan Guadingo, the National Lemonade Day program’s New York City director. Last year’s event was held in McCarren Park in Williamsburg.
BUSHWICK — The MTA has announced that it will cut back L-train overnight service between Lorimer Street and Broadway Junction on nights and weekends for the rest of July and for occasional nights and weekends through the end of the year, according to Curbed. Trains are already running only every 20 minutes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On weeknights, trains won’t run between Lorimer and Broadway Junction from midnight to 5 a.m.; and on weekends, the closure will begin at 10 a.m. The MTA says it needs access to the tracks in Brooklyn to make repairs as part of its over Canarsie Tunnel project. The L train’s East River tunnel was seriously damaged during Superstorm Sandy. While the Lorimer-Broadway Junction stretch of the L train is closed, shuttle buses will be available to straphangers, Curbed said.
CANARSIE — Mozelle Brown, who lost her daughter to bullet mean for someone else two years ago, held a party in Canarsie Park recently to honor those who put her daughter’s killers behind bars, according to PIX11. “You feel like family now,” Brown told the detectives and assistant district attorneys attending the party. After the original shooting, Det. Philip Facenda of the 81st Precinct and Det. Thomas Pisano of Brooklyn North tracked
the killers down to North Carolina. Last month, Nazir Saunders and Anthony Alexander were convicted of second-degree murder. The gathering released dozens of balloons with shouts of “We love you Chynna,” referring to Chynna Battle, the murder victim.
CONEY ISLAND — The Brooklyn Paper recently listed what it considers Coney Island’s top food spots. They included Al Cavallino, a pizza shop serving “high-end personal pizzas” that opened two months ago; Kitchen 21 in the former Childs Restaurant building, which serves traditional seaside fare such as burgers and seafood with a gourmet twist; Nathan’s Famous, whose hot dogs are synonymous with New York franks for many people; Williams Candy Shop, the home of candy apples and chocolate-covered marshmallows; and Ruby’s Bar and Grill, “your beer and snack go-to while on the beach.” Conspicuous by its absence from this list was Gargiulo’s Italian Restaurant, a few blocks from the amusement district, which has been a high-end attraction for more than 100 years.
CROWN HEIGHTS — MTA New York City Transit President Andy Byford thinks handwritten service announcements, such as the hastily scrawled “No Manhattan-Bound Trains” signs found at the President Street station on Crown Heights on Monday, make the subway system “look like a mom-and-pop shop.” The standard 8½-by-11-inch sheets of white paper were the only notices of the closure. Byford added that “Handwritten signs are anathema to me. They are an embarrassment,” according to the New York Post. Station managers have been reminded to stick to official signs.
DYKER HEIGHTS — Five people were injured when a car in Dyker Heights jumped onto the sidewalk and crashed into a deli on Sunday morning, according to ABC7. The incident happened around 8:15 a.m. at the corner of 14th Avenue and 67th Street. Two people were injured seriously, and three others suffered minor injuries. The victims were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and Maimonides Medical Center.
FORT GREENE — A restored 1850s townhouse in Fort Greene topped luxury real estate sales in Brooklyn last week, according to The Real Deal. The six-bedroom property was sold for $3.9 million. The second most expensive contract was for a condo at 347 Henry St. in Cobble Hill, which went for $3.7 million. Luxury sales in the borough were worth a combined total of $38.9 million,
The Real Deal reported. The properties each averaged 108 days on the market. Stribling, a high-end real estate firm, describes luxury sales as $5 million or higher.
PARK SLOPE — The Park Slope Civic Council and the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID are scheduled to present “Art Slope,” a presentation of film shorts, at the Old Stone House in Washington Park on July 19, starting at 8:30. Washington Park is just off Fifth Avenue and Third Street. Eight short films will be shown, and all are suitable for children, according to the Civic Council.
RED HOOK — Forbes recently reviewed an electric car ride one of its writers took in Brooklyn. The electric car in particular was a Porsche Taycan, the luxury brand’s first battery-powered electric vehicle. This Taycan took part in last weekend’s electric-car races on the Red Hook waterfront. The ride wasn’t a cab ride, but a “demo ride” before Sunday’s race. “The Taycan seemed to handle remarkably well,” Forbes reported. “It was stable through corners with minimal body roll, although it did pitch forward under hand braking.” Bear in mind that through much of the demo ride, the Taycan was going forward at triple-digit speeds.
SEA GATE — Registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who has been getting quite a lot of publicity lately due to his reputed ties to President Donald Trump, grew up in Sea Gate, a gated middle-class enclave at the western end of Coney Island, according to the Forward. The family lived across the street from Kenesses Israel, the area’s oldest synagogue. Epstein and his brother Mark were both gifted students in math, and Jeffrey himself was known as a talented musician. Like most kids in the neighborhood, he attended Lafayette High School, which was then largely Italian-American and Jewish. Eventually, Epstein went to college, started teaching at the elite Dalton School and moved to Wall Street. “He never looked back,” the Forward said.
WILLIAMSBURG — The 116 annual Giglio feast is underway in Williamsburg. The feast, dedicated to San Paolino, came to New York from Italy in 1903, according to PIX11. Part of it involves lifting a towering “Giglio” statue. In the past, there were waiting lists for people who wanted to help lift the Giglio. However, many Italians have moved out of Williamsburg in the recent past, and this year the organizers of the feast had to solicit lifters for the 72-foot structure. After outreach efforts, they found 100 new people, according to Giglio lieutenant Neil Dellamonica.

t was a perfect afternoon to golf for a very good cause on Saturday, July 13 at the seventh annual Play for Pink tournament at Dyker Beach Golf Course. The fundraiser was sponsored by the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club with all proceeds going to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. According to event organizer and Brookridge Women’s Golf Club member Katherine Condon this was their best turnout so far. “It feels awesome to be here,” Condon told this paper. “The weather is perfect and I believe this is our best event ever. We were sold out two weeks ago with 144 players of all levels—from expert to amateur — with men hitting the links as well as women.”

I love golf and
it’s just a great event overall.” The day included a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with a cart, hole in one contests and longest drive contests. After playing, golfers enjoyed lunch on the Dyker Beach Golf Club veranda with door prizes, raffles and gifts. This year’s winners were Eddie Gardner, Victoria Gardner, Terry Tarangelo and Maddie Lopez. Dyker Beach Golf Course has been hosting the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club since 1955.

Over 500 people attended the 12th Heroes Night celebration at the Wall of Remembrance at MCU Park in Coney Island on Friday,
July 12. Those attending the service included families of first responders, 36 probationary firefighters carrying the American flag, the FDNY Ceremonial Unit and the FDNY Emerald Society Bagpipers. Play Nice Theatre has begun its season of lighthearted musicals with positive, life-affirming messages about cooperation and kindness. And they’re looking for their July/August cast, musicians, and backstage helpers. Relocated from Manhattan, this all-volunteer company’s rehearsals and meetings reflect their mission and message by encouraging its mixed-generation cast and crew (ages 6 to 106) to interact socially and share stories of their own lives on and off stage. In a welcoming atmosphere, the experienced and new Play Nice actors and crew are encouraged to come early and linger after assigned rehearsal slots in order to get to know each other, help each other memorize their lines, do school homework and play games. Some may choose to help with scenery painting or prop-making. All ticket sales from main stage shows ($10 admission) is donated to local charities, a prime motivation for many participants who find it rewarding to help raise money for those less fortunate through donating their time and talent. According to theatre founder Rob Lester, the cast and crew are like a second family. “Working on a show with

friendly people is fun and satisfying,” he says. The Brooklyn Eagle stopped by the new location at 89 Fourth Avenue, five blocks from Barclays Center, where the two-act musical “The Three Little Pigs Buy a Brownstone in Brooklyn” is running on weekends (2 p.m. Saturdays, 3:30 p.m. Sundays, through July 1). The Eagle is mentioned prominently in the Brooklyn-centric script in Scene 6 and the newspaper is used as a prop as well. The show’s target audience is ages six and up, with plenty of humor adults will appreciate. “Two six-year-olds are among the actors, with the oldest member more than ten times their age, and the family idea is reflected literally: the cast includes two brothers who play two of the pigs; a mother and her son have a scene together as an older pig

A child of the Depression, he regaled his family with stories of shining shoes for troops in Sheepshead Bay, Midwood High School in the 1940s, five-cent double-features at the movies, playing baseball in Florida for the minor leagues, jumping out of airplanes as a paratrooper and crazy exploits
with his brothers. Jim owned an auto collision business for many years. He had a great talent for fixing things and making them look brand-new. His skill in this was magical to see. In addition to baseball, he satisfied his competitive streak in a bowling league, playing a high-speed game of ping-pong, and beating everyone at pool, mahjong and gin rummy. In his later years, he loved beach days at Coney Island and the Rockaways or a dip in the pool. But most of all, he loved Annie. His wife and family were precious to him. The neighborhood was out in force outside Our Lady of Grace Church on Saturday, July 13 to celebrate actor Vincent Pastore's birthday a little early at an old-fashioned Brooklyn block party. Hosted by Gravesend-born actor and filmmaker William DeMeo and Michelle Frantzeskos’s Entertainment and Consultant Inc., there was food, music and dancing aplenty. Classic cars lined up along the church’s parking lot. Maria “The Ice Cream Girl” Campanella’s ice cream truck, Stella’s Zeppoles, A&S Fine Store’s BBQ and Isabella Creations’ birthday cake provided the food. Vendors onsite to sell their wares included Brooklyn Brand T-shirts, Wise Girl Wear perfume and Wise Guy Wear cologne. The music was powered by DJ’s McGee Too, Lenny Santawasso and Ross the Boss.
A $20 donation to the church was the price of admission. Participants also had countless opportunities to take photos with and get autographs from celebrities, including Joseph D’Onofrio, Federico Castelluccio, Robert Gillings and Rick Borgia, as well as DeMeo and, of course, Pastore himself. A few days prior to the event, DeMeo said he couldn’t wait to bring back, even if for a night, the tradition of Brooklyn block parties, something he said people always looked forward to in the summertime. “I like events like these, when people can get a sense of how they grew up, coming back to just the way it was,” DeMeo said in a phone interview before the party. “It’s a great feeling to see people you haven’t seen in years. Lots of those who moved on have come back because they want to feel like they did when they were younger. We want to remember how we grew up.” As part of the

event, the hosts had a surprise not only for the guest of honor but also for the “Sopranos” fans in attendance who gathered around a Swan truck, a rented vehicle that provides high resolution screens for video and audio entertainment, to watch clips of Pastore’s most notable
performances on the TV series. Later, Frances Mignano, a Brooklyn-born actress, producer and singer, took to the microphone to sing “Happy Birthday,” alongside a couple of hit songs, such as Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.” Domini Monroe, a musical artist, and Biagio Benevenga, an Italian-American singer, drove the excitement of the night forward, as party-goers hit the dance floor. Monroe performed her own hit songs, while Benevenga brought the crowd back to the ‘80s with Joe Dolce’s “Shaddap Your Face” and Julius La Rosa’s “Eh Cumpari.” “Everybody from Brooklyn, from Michele, to Willy, my dear friend — he is like my son — thank you,” said Pastore. “You know, I met Willy many years ago. I was doing a project and Willy came up. He handed me a script called the ‘Wannabees.’ And I looked at him and said,
‘You don’t come up to an actor when he’s doing a movie and hand him a script.’ He then went on to do so many projects.” He continued, “I was so happy that he always called me and said, ‘Hey, Vinny, you want to do this, or do you want to do that?’ He always gave me something different, and I amhappy to say that I am working with Willy on ‘Gravesend,’ his
new project.” “Vinny is a class-act. He is such a talent,” said DeMeo, “And to have him in my projects, it’s so incredible. He’s a great guy, through and through.” Pastore announced that his band, “Big Pussy’s Gangster Squad,” will be playing at the Bar 360 at Resorts World Casino on July 18, beginning at 8 p.m.

Eye on REAL ESTATE Check out Windsor Terrace, a great staycation neighborhood By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn
If you’re staycationing in Brooklyn, there’s a neighborhood to visit that you might not have thought of: Windsor Terrace. It’s tucked between Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery. So if you’re going to the park’s BRIC Celebrate! Brooklyn Festival, a stroll around Windsor Terrace’s tree-lined streets is an entertaining preliminary activity. This is the 41st season of the free outdoor concerts at the Prospect Park Bandshell. BRIC is an arts incubator and presenter of free cultural programming. If it’s not a concert night at Prospect Park, you can combine your Windsor Terrace stroll with a movie at Nitehawk Cinema. The theater is at 188 Prospect Park West, just steps away from the edge of Windsor Terrace.
People love this landmarked movie house because ... A. You can drink while you watch the film and eat excellent food that you order from your theater seat. B. There had been a theater on this spot since the 1920s. Then a couple years ago, developer Hidrock Realty decided to build condos on the property with just a small movie theater. There were widespread objections to the condo design. The developer changed course and sold the building to investors connected to Nitehawk. It already operated a popular drink-and-dine movie theater in Williamsburg.

LOVELY LIMESTONE ROWHOUSES IN THE SUMMER SUN A good place to start a walk around Windsor Terrace is outside the F train’s 15th StreetProspect Park Station. This puts

Welcome to leafy, lovely Windsor Terrace. you at the corner of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest, where a pair of eyecatching tall columns marks the entrance to the park. There’s something else here that might confuse you if you see it on a map before you arrive — a circle that’s a square. When you’re actually standing here, it makes perfect sense. Across from Prospect Park there’s a traffic circle lined with handsome old-fashioned apartment buildings with curving facades. A small piece of land in the middle of the traffic circle has a World War I memorial called Bartel-Pritchard Square. The square commemorates two Brooklyn soldiers who fought and died in that war: Emil Bartel, who’d lived on nearby Windsor Place, and his friend William Pritchard from Bushwick. So. Let’s start walking already. When you head down Prospect Park Southwest, there’s all kinds of architectural eye candy. The great visuals start with limestone rowhouses with angled facades. They are adorned with elaborate decoration on the stonework above their windows and front doors. On the other side of the street, Prospect Park’s tall trees and lush foliage brighten the scenery. Further along, there’s an especially charming home at 85 Prospect Park Southwest. The old-fashioned shingled house is painted green and has window shutters, a mansard roof and a weather vane.
There are numerous interesting turns you can take off Prospect Park Southwest. Whichever direction you go, you’ll find houses with nifty porches, some glassedin and some open-air. Pretty porches are a feature on two single-block streets called Howard Place and Fuller Place that run parallel to each other between Windsor Place and Prospect Avenue. In “The Amazing SpiderMan” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, a house on Fuller Place served as Peter Parker and Aunt May’s home, the website Movie-Locations.com reported. Please don’t email me to tell me they lived in Queens. I know they did. The filmmakers used a Brooklyn location to depict that other borough.
A LANDMARKED FIRE HOUSE Another street where the rowhouses are particularly beautiful is Windsor Place.
And on Seeley Street, some homeowners have turned their front yards into picturesque mini-meadows of wildflowers. Now let’s detour into the 19th century for a minute. Lots were laid out and some streets were built in Windsor Terrace in the early 1850s, but neighborhood development got off to a slow start, a city Landmarks Preservation Commission report indicates. Irish immigrants arrived after the Civil War. By 1890, there were about 150 houses in the neighborhood. Rowhouses were built in the early 1900s. Developer William Calder constructed and sold 700 of them in a 17year span, the LPC report says. The report’s main focus is the Engine Company 240/Battalion 48 Firehouse. Danish-born architect Peter J. Lauritzen designed this Romanesque Revival-style FDNY treasure at 1307-1309 Prospect Ave. It was built in 1895. It’s an individual city landmark.

Check out Windsor Terrace — Continued from page 14INB — One vantage point from which you can see the firehouse is a pedestrian bridge you enter at the corner of Prospect and Greenwood avenues. The footbridge hangs over the Prospect Expressway, which split Windsor Terrace into two parts when it was built in the 1950s.
A BRONZE SCULPTURE OF LIBERTY Pedestrian bridges are such a novelty to me. This one’s got interesting stuff on both ends of it.

For instance, the ramp on the other side of the footbridge leads to the corner of Greenwood Avenue and East 5th Street. There, at the edge of Greenwood Playground, there’s a monument to 47 soldiers and sailors from the neighborhood who died while serving in World War I. It’s a bronze relief sculpture of Liberty placing a palm frond — which symbolizes peace — on an altar. An inscription on the altar says, “They gave their lives in the cause of Freedom.” The artist who made the sculpture was Charles Keck. His best-known New York City work is the statue of Father Duffy beside the TKTS discount theater-tickets booth in Times Square. On another corner of Greenwood Avenue and East 5th Street, there’s an ice cream stand that makes slushies out of the Italian ices that are on its menu. They’re staggeringly good. The shop is called Kathy’s Gourmet Italian Ices and Ice Cream. It takes a really large serving of Italian ice to make a slushie, in case you were wondering.
The homeowners on the corner of Caton Avenue and East 4th Street display a small cannon on their lawn that commemorates the Battle of Brooklyn. Caton Avenue was a roadway called Martense Lane during the Revolutionary War. Hessian troops marched on it on their way to the battle.
AN INSTAGRAM-WORTHY PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS
This is Fuller Place, where scenes from “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel were filmed.
This pedestrian overpass casts some serious shadows.
There are so many beautiful blocks in this area. After you weave your way around to the part of the neighborhood where the streets don’t have “East” in their names — which is on the other side of Vanderbilt Street — you’ll find another Prospect Expressway pedestrian bridge. Its entrance is at 10th Avenue and 19th Street. This photogenic footbridge is enclosed with a semicircle of wire mesh. It’s like you’re walking through a tunnel, but up in the air. When you get to the other side, on Tenth Avenue and 18th Street, the wire enclosure casts an abstract pattern of shadows on the sidewalk. Speaking of photogenic, the brick rowhouses on nearby 17th Street are eye-pleasing. At this point, you’re on the north end of the neighborhood — near Prospect Park West, where there are bars and restaurants for a bite to eat before the BRIC Celebrate! Brooklyn Festival. If you stroll in the opposite direction and wind up on the south end of Windsor Terrace, there are fun spots to eat on Fort Hamilton Parkway. There’s also some great housing to see — for instance distinctive redbrick rowhouses on Caton Avenue, which is Windsor Terrace’s southern border.

Damascus Bakeries’ Ed Mafoud honored at 24th annual Bishop DiMarzio Golf Classic BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM
O
ne of Brooklyn’s most respected civic leaders, Edward Mafoud, who owns Damascus Bakeries with his brother David, was honored at this year’s 24th Annual Bishop DiMarzio Golf Classic on Thursday, July 11 at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset. Mafoud has helped continue and broaden his maternal grandfather Hassan Halaby’s business which was started in 1930. Halaby opened Damascus Bakery, a local storefront bakery on Atlantic Avenue that soon gained a reputation for producing the best Middle Eastern pita and lavash breads in the community. Halaby wanted to bring the flavor and feel of his home country, Syria, to his new home in Downtown Brooklyn. After all, it was in Syria that he first learned traditional Middle Eastern baking recipes. “It was 1930, when Brooklyn was a borough of many proud immigrants building neighborhoods,” explained Mafoud. “It was also the time of the Great Depression and Prohibition. My grandfather would work night and day to bake his warm and delicious old world pitas, lavash and flatbreads for his new Brooklyn neighbors.” He was known as “King of the Avenue,” according to Mafoud and through it all his grandfather epitomized the American Dream. “He got married, started a family of four children,

In the late ‘50s, Leila married Mafoud’s father Tony. “During the 1960’s, ’70s, & ’80s, our father, Anthony Mafoud, and our uncle, Henry Halaby, introduced our pitas, lavash and other traditional baked goods made with old-fashioned excellence to the other boroughs of New York as well as to other cities in America. Our products now sell in all 50 states, and even other countries,” said Mafoud. Today, Damascus Bakeries carries on the old world tradition as new generations discover what
Mafoud’s grandfather created 80 years ago. In fact, the Mafouds have found a way to pay homage to their Brooklyn roots with their popular new Brooklyn Bred Bistro Breads product line. “We love baking for our Brooklyn community,” said Mafoud. “Every loaf is an opportunity for us to bake authentic — and truly outspoken — Bred that reaches out — and speaks out — to all, no doubt with a Brooklyn accent.” Aside from continuing the legacy of his family’s business, Mafoud is a civic leader in every sense of the word. Ridge and a trustee on the Staten Island University Foundation Board, and he also serves on the board of the Salaam Club of New York. Mafoud and his wife Marisol are the parents of Leila, Kamil and Lolita. The other honoree at this year’s event was Msgr. Alfred LoPinto, president and chief executive officer of the Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens who received the Distinguished Clergy of the Year Award. DiMarzio and DeSales Media Group, the communications arm of the Catholic Diocese, presented a check for $100,000 to Télé Lumière/Noursat, the first and only Christian television network in Lebanon and the Middle East. “Ed Mafoud, a man of great faith, has a very distinguished record of success in business and in service to others,” Diocese of Brooklyn Deputy Press Secretary John Quaglione told this paper. “It was only appropriate that Ed was honored at this year’s Bishop DiMarzio Golf Classic which raised money to support the efforts of Télé Lumière/Noursat to spread Christian values throughout the Middle East.”

lthough no one would expect any mayor to be chained to his or her desk, Mayor de Blasio’s Don Quixote effort to become president has taken him out of the city far too many days over the past four months. Although modern communications can keep him in touch, leadership is never a phone call away. For that, you have to be on the scene. That was apparent last weekend when midtown Manhattan went dark. The city’s emergency services, including police, fire and EMS, did their usual outstanding job. But what if? Sometimes you needed your elected leader in place, leading. Sure, as I said earlier,

no mayor can be expected to be in town all the time. Nevertheless, the citizens of our city should not be okay with their mayor being out of state in the past 120-day period better than 30 days. If Bill de Blasio plans to keep this travel schedule up until next February after the New Hampshire primary, then he should resign. For all practical purposes, using his present schedule as a yardstick, he would have been away another two months. *** I saw on social media a picture of Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis as a guest of the National Council of Young Israel placing a note in the holy Western Wall in Jerusalem on a recent trip.
Several months ago, my friend Neil Mostofsky asked me if I would like him to place a note from me in the wall during his visit. He told me that in Jewish tradition, the message written on notes placed in this wall are considered to be direct communication with God. I found this thought extremely comforting and of course gave him a short note. I thanked him in the past for his thoughtfulness. ugust of 2015, two months after Donald Trump launched his campaign, referring to Mexicans as criminals and rapists, two Boston men were charged with a hate crime for brutally assaulting a sleeping, Hispanic man. One told police he did it because “Donald Trump was right. All these illegals need to be deported.” Asked about the attackers days later, Trump replied, “People who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again.” Kicking and beating a man with a metal pole doesn’t make America great. Urinating on a bloodied victim is not a display of love of country. Addressing such actions as followers simply being passionate is un-American. And, in that case, it was racist. It’s no surprise Trump told four particular
congresswomen they should “go back” to the “broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Though all citizens, with three having been born here, for some reason he felt it made sense to tell these non-white Americans to go back to the countries they come from. He confirmed what he meant the following day, adding, “If you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, you can leave.” As someone who spent an inordinate amount of time complaining about how unhappy he was with the previous administration, by his own logic he should have left the United States years ago. But nobody, even his most vehement critics, ever considered telling Trump to leave the country. His campaign slogan implied America wasn’t great and his inauguration speech depicted “American Carnage,” yet he feels
comfortable telling certain people dissatisfied with where our country is that they don’t belong here. He and four of his kids are children of immigrants. He has married two immigrants. Yet, in his mind, women of color who disagree with him — the only one of whom not born here having been a citizen longer than his current wife — need to leave.
Whether it’s President Obama, women of color in Congress or recently telling a group of Jewish Americans that Netanyahu is their prime minister, Donald Trump continues to make clear that if you are what he considers an “other,” you are not a real American.

COMMON SENSE I rarely talk publicly about my situation and frankly, while I was ill, I kept up a full schedule at work and traveling, which included weekly trips to Albany. It was not easy, but I got through it. My reason for bringing this up now is to bring attention to the amazing announcement President Trump made this week relating to kidney disease, dialysis and transplants. Coming in the form of an executive order aimed at streamlining the overburdened kidney care and transplant system, it will, in the words of our
president, “bring new hope to millions of Americans suffering from kidney disease.” Thank you, President Trump! *** Allow me to wish my friend New York State Conservative Party Treasurer and Brooklyn Chairperson Fran Vella-Marrone a happy birthday! On the actual day, July 11, Fran was participating in a Conservative Party event in Westchester County, but I know her family was coming in from around the country last weekend to enjoy it with her. The same man who pushed Birtherism for years, based on the notion that a black president must have been born in Africa. Whether it’s President Obama, women of color in Congress or recently telling a group of Jewish Americans
that Netanyahu is their prime minister, Donald Trump continues to make clear that if you are what he considers an “other,” you are not a real American. We’ve seen the ramifications of this sentiment locally the past few years. Seven months ago, a woman was caught on camera in the subway assaulting another woman with an umbrella while calling her an anti-Asian slur. One year ago, a woman was caught on camera on the S53 bus threatening a woman in a headscarf, screaming, “She thinks she has rights that she doesn’t have” and, “Is that ICE? They’re here for you.” Two years ago, a man was caught on camera in the subway telling an Iranian couple to “go back to your own country,” before threatening
to kill them. A month after the 2016 election, NYPD Officer Aml Elsokary, previously honored as a hero for saving a baby from a burning building, was accosted by a man in Bay Ridge who was yelling, “ISIS bitch! I will cut your throat! Go back to your country. At the time, she was with her son and wearing a hijab. Words matter. Eighteen Republican members of Congress condemned Trump’s remarks the next day, but only 18. Only Sen. Tim Scott and Rep. Will Hurd specifically acknowledged it was racist. Some say the ‘go back to where you came from’ refrain is not who we are, but it is part of who we are. We have all heard that racist line in our lifetimes. Just never from our president.

For the eighth consecutive year the Merchants of Third Avenue, led by President Bob Howe, launched the latest edition of the Summer Stroll on 3rd in conjunction with the city’s Weekend Walks initiative. “It was ideal for strollers, diners, music lovers and Third Avenue businesses,” Howe said. “Especially for parents looking for ways to enjoy quality time with their kids, the variety of fun things to do was really fine, from puppets to face painting and other games. “One of our goals is to bring more foot traffic onto the avenue as we compete — unfairly, it might seem — with mail-order businesses like
Amazon. T
he feast in honor of Santa Rosalia has become a much-anticipated event in the Bensonhurst community. It’s a time to honor the patron saint of Palermo, Sicily with live entertainment, music, rides, games, food and drinks. Among the delicacies will be zeppole, rice balls and freshly-made brick oven pizza. Sponsored by Figli di Santa Rosalia, a member of the Federation of Italian American Organizations, the feast will be celebrated this year from Thursday, Aug. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 1 from 67th Street to 75th Street on 18th Avenue, aka Cristoforo Colombo Boulevard, in Bensonhurst. “The Santa Rosalia Feast, also known as the 18th Avenue Feast, has been a Bensonhurst tradition for over 44 years,” said District Manager of Community Board 11 Marnee Elias-Pavia. “While the neighborhood’s demographics have shifted, residents will have an opportunity to share in the culture, food and music of our Italian-American community.” The Feast of Santa Rosalia has been held continuously in Sicily since 1624 and is the largest Italian-American feast in Brooklyn. This year’s grand marshal
is City Councilmember Justin Branna n, who said he was honored to have been given the title. “I grew up going to the 18th Avenue Feast as a kid so this is a real honor for me,” Brannan told this paper. “It’s a Brooklyn tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation, started by Sicilian immigrants who wanted an American version of the famous Festino di Santa Rosalia that takes place in Palermo every year.” Brannan said that it was a way to pay homage to his cultural heritage. “As an Italian-American from Brooklyn whose ancestors came from Naples, this festival always makes me proud of both my Italian and Brooklyn heritage,” he told this paper. “And it reminds me of how immigrants have always made Brooklyn the beautiful and diverse place that it is today. I’m truly thrilled to be the grand marshal this year.” Last year’s Grand Marshal Carlo Scissura, president and CEO of the New York Building Congress, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event a success.

It’s a part of our culture, a part of the Italian community,” Scissura told this paper. “It’s part of the immigrant story, which is about a patron saint that was important for people from Sicily, that, by the way, once made up one of the largest groups anywhere in Brooklyn. “The nice thing is now with the changed community and many different ethnic groups, it’s a place for people to come together for 10 days, listen to
music, eat food, bring their kids out and just enjoy walking around the community,” he added. “I think that’s the beauty of it today.” Scissura was also delighted to have Brannan as this year’s grand marshal. “We’re very, very excited that Justin is the grand marshal. They told me I was a tough act to follow as grand marshal, so I said then Justin is the only one,” continued Scissura. “We’re very happy about it and I think he will be great. He’s been a staunch
community advocate and he supported the feast even before he was an elected official. I think he will be making his Italian grandparents proud. Justin is as Italian as they come,” he added. The feast will conclude
on Sunday, Sept. 1 with a religious procession at 3 p.m. beginning at 18th Avenue and 72nd Street and ending at St. Dominic Church at 20th Avenue and Bay Ridge Parkway where there will be a full mass at 4 p.m.
