Crowds come out for fifth annual Dyker Heights tree lighting ceremony By John Alexander

JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

While tourists journey from far and wide to see the legendary Dyker Heights lights, the community gathered together on Friday Dec. 6, for the 13th Avenue Merchants Association’s annual Christmas lighting in front of Investors Bank. The two-story tree, located at 13th Avenue and Bay Ridge Parkway, is an extravagant holiday light display in a neighborhood famous for its

larger-than-life displays. Community leaders and local residents came out to celebrate the spirit of the season. Dyker Heights Civic Association President Fran Vella-Marrone joined with Investors Bank executives and staff for the tree lighting. “For the past four years, Investor’s Bank has been sponsoring the tree lighting and we’re very appreciative of what they do. Also, this year they worked with the NIA who helped put the event together,” Vella-Marrone told

this paper. “Every year, we also have a fire ladder and our local firehouse puts a flag on top of the tree, and it’s something that’s not done anywhere else. It’s unique to what we do, and we’ve been doing it for many, many years, so I’m always happy to be at the tree lighting,” she added. The festivities included a DJ, hot chocolate and — of course — some good, oldfashioned Christmas carols courtesy of kids from P.S./I.S. 30.

Outrage follows granting of parole in Bensonhurst cop’s murder BY JAIME DEJESUS

JDEJESUS @BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

Over 20 years after the cold-blooded murder of an NYPD officer, outrage has once again been sparked as the woman who was convicted of manslaughter in the death of Police Officer Anthony Mosomillo, a Bensonhurst native, was granted parole. As first reported by CBS News, Betsy Ramos was granted parole in November without the Mosomillo family having been previously

informed or given the opportunity to speak before the parole board. Mosomillo, who was assigned to the 67th Precinct, was killed on May 26, 1998 when he and his partner went into an apartment in East Flatbush to arrest Ramos’ boyfriend Jose Serrano on a drug-related warrant. Serrano was hiding in a closet. The officers found him and following a confrontation, Serrano grabbed Mosomillo’s partner’s gun, shooting Mosomillo four times. Mosomillo turned and shot and killed Serrano be-

fore dying. Ramos was prosecuted for helping Serrano get the gun away from the cop. Much to her dismay, Mosomillo’s widow Margaret found out that Ramos had been granted parole

when she received a letter saying that Ramos had already been in front of the parole board and been granted release. According to the family, the Parole Board’s Office of Victim Assistance, which is

tasked with liaising with crime victims and arranging victim impact statements, failed to notify them of Ramos’ appeal and new hearing.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Murderer of L&B co-owner Louis Barbati faces up to life in prison JDEJESUS @BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

Three and a half years following the murder of Louis Barbati, co-owner of Gravesend’s famous L&B Spumoni Gardens, the man behind the shooting has finally been convicted of the crime. Forty-four-year-old Long Island native Andres “Andy” Fernandez was convicted on Monday, Dec. 9 of seconddegree murder and seconddegree criminal possession of a weapon. Barbati, 61, was shot and killed outside his Dyker

Heights home near 76th Street and 12th Avenue just past 7 p.m. on June 30, 2016 while his wife and sons were inside. At about 6:40 p.m., he had left his restaurant and was carrying a plastic bag containing $15,483 in cash. About an hour earlier, according to the evidence, Fernandez — wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses — was lurking near Barbati’s home. When Barbati arrived, he parked his car alongside the house and got out, holding the bag of cash. Fernandez then walked across the street, shot Barbati several times and fled in a car without taking the money.

Evidence also showed that Fernandez was at L&B Spumoni Gardens earlier that same day. Fernandez faces up to 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 8, 2020. A police source who spoke with this paper on the day of Fernandez’s arrest, Nov. 3, 2016, said that cops believed that “Fernandez attempted to rob Barbati, and Barbati pulled away and tried to run inside the house, [into] the gated backyard.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Cutting back pilot program will make Access-A-Ride less accessible BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

Access-A-Ride

The MTA’s plan to cut back its Access-A-Ride pilot program has some lawmakers and seniors seething. In fact, for some seniors the availability of Access-A-Ride services for the disabled is a lifeline that impacts their quality of life. With the MTA planning to severely limit its pilot program, the fear is that it will impact people with limited mobility by reducing the number of affordable, wheelchair-accessible vehicles they can use. “Everyone needs to get someplace,” said Bay Ridge resident Jean Ryan, who is a member of the pilot program and has been using Access-ARide since 1994. “There were

two pilot programs,” explained Ryan. “One was cut last spring without telling any of the users. They cut it on March 1 and didn’t tell anyone until it was reported in the Daily News on March 17.” Ryan attended a monthly MTA meeting shortly after to voice her frustrations. “There were so many people there protesting and they were up in arms because it was really changing their lives so much,” explained Ryan. “Finally, Access-A-Ride found something that was working well and then they cut it.” The original pilot program cut in March allowed users to request a pickup via the blue and white vans by using an app or notifying Access-A-Ride online. According to Ryan, the program offered more flexibili-

ty for riders’ return trips among other benefits. “With regular Access-ARide, you have to book a trip one or two days before and you have to know exactly when and where you are going,” said Ryan. “So, when this was taken away, people who were able to do so much more were just suddenly back in the dark ages again.” While the current pilot program offers 1,200 people unlimited Access-A-Ride trips for $2.75 per ride through the app, a letter sent from MTA Chairperson Patrick Foye to Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the number of rides offered to its customers would be capped at 16 a month.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

State Sen. Andrew Gounardes voted yes! To marriage, that is. The bachelor lawmaker exchanged “I do’s” with his sweetie, Melanie Graf, on Dec. 7 in a ceremony at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New Rochelle, in front of a large crowd of family and friends. The ceremony was performed by the Very Rev. Nicholas Anctil, according to the New York Times, which reported on the nuptials in its Sunday Style section on Dec. 8. The Rev. Alex Orphanos, who is married to Gounardes’ sister Patricia, took part in the service. The wedding guests included Councilmember Justin Brannan, a close friend of the senator’s. Santa came to Bay Ridge on Thursday, Dec. 5, for the annual tree lighting at the Shore Road Park gazebo. There were music, carolers, hot chocolate and cookies to help brighten the spirits of all those attending the event. State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and City Councilmember Justin Brannan teamed up with NIA Community Services for the Christmas tree lighting that brought out well over 100 revelers braving the cold air to be part of the treasured neighborhood event. Mary Anne Cino, CEO of the NIA, welcomed guests. “The NIA is so pleased to be doing this community event this year in partnership with both our Sen. Andrew Gounardes and our Councilmember Justin Brannan,” said Cino. “We are happy to be bringing out the

community together and it’s just a joy to be here and see all of you.” Gounardes got the crowd in the mood by asking if everyone was ready to celebrate Christmas. “I’m so glad we’re able to carry on this great neighborhood tradition of lighting the Christmas tree here on Shore Road,” said Gounardes. He also thanked the NIA and the Columbia Society of the Sanitation Department for donating the books Santa Claus was giving to the children. “This is how we celebrate community, this is how we celebrate the holidays and this is what it’s all about,” said Gounardes. “It’s bringing the Christmas spirit, bringing the holiday cheer and bringing the joy of neighbors being neighborly to one another into our community.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

2019, he suffered a heart attack and went into cardiac arrest. It was while he was being treated for the heart attack that Vinitsky was diagnosed with ALS. “The only family he has is his 80-year-old mother who has medical issues herself. Mike is forced to have 24-hour health aides assigned to him. He is responsible for the medical costs himself. Whatever monetary amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated,” a message on the Go Fund Me page reads.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Retaining wall violations not rescinded, homeowners say BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

Homeowners living on West Seventh and West Eighth streets, on either side of the N subway line, are not getting any satisfaction from the New York City Department of Buildings over the retaining walls located between their backyards and the subway, local officials said. Last month, after an outcry from homeowners who were hit with notices of violation

due to the retaining walls, the DOB promised to rescind the violations. The New York City Transit Authority agreed to take responsibility for the inspections. A month later, it still hasn’t happened, according to one peeved pol, Assemblymember William Colton. The notices were sent out to several homeowners who live along the N, B and Q subway lines. Colton is demanding that DOB move immediately to

resolve the issue. “I demand an immediate cure of the notices of violation and a full investigation of why these notices were not rescinded by now, when work on subway tracks is being done on the retaining walls by the MTA,” Colton said, referring to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the parent agency of the New York City Transit Authority.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

“Where there’s light, there’s life,” said Jack Spatola, president of the Federation of ItalianAmerican Organizations of Brooklyn, as he made the announcement that two Southwest Brooklyn shopping strips will have Christmas lights this season after many years of darkness. The FIAO joined forces with Councilmember Justin Brannan to ensure that 13th Avenue and 18th Avenue will be adorned with Christmas lights to entice shoppers and make the holiday season brighter for the Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst communities. Brannan and Spatola made the announcement at the FIAO’s Il Centro community center at 8711 18th Ave. on Dec. 4.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Friends of a retired police officer stricken with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) have mounted a holiday-time effort to help their buddy pay his escalating medical bills. Retired cop Mike Vinitsky is currently undergoing treatments at Coney Island Hospital, where he has received visits in recent days from numerous police officers, as well as Councilmember Mark Treyger and the Rev. Michael Louis Gelfant, pastor of Saint Finbar

Catholic Church. One of Vinitsky’s friends, Eric Nass, started a Go Fund Me page on Nov. 30 to try and raise $150,000 to help the stricken hero pay his bills. Within five days, the effort garnered $28,000 in donations. Vinitsky’s troubles began in 2007 when he was attacked by a hospitalized prisoner he was guarding. The prisoner hit him in the head with a metal post, according to a biography of the officer on Go Fund Me. Vinitsky retired in 2010 due to the serious head injuries he sustained in the attack three years earlier. In July,

Councilmember Justin Brannan said he and the FIAO have been working since the summer to find a way to bring Christmas lights back to 13th and 18th avenues.

Bay Ridge remembers Pearl Harbor BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The Bay Ridge community gathered on Saturday, Dec. 7 for a memorial tribute to the brave veterans who sacrificed so much to defend our nation during World War II in honor of Pearl Harbor Day. The Brooklyn Council of the Kings County Veterans of Foreign Wars held the remembrance ceremony in Bay Ridge on the American Veterans Memorial Pier (formerly called the 69th Street Ferry Pier) at 11 a.m. The memorial — marking the 78th anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy on America’s Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii — was organized by U.S. Navy veteran John Sanford, a past County and District Commander. The salute was conducted by Brooklyn VFW County Commander Gary Wasserman, and included tossing a memorial wreath from the pier to represent the lives lost at Pearl Harbor. A total of 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 were wounded in the attack which galvanized American support for entering WWII. Dec. 7 was called “A date which will live in infamy” by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The wreath was tossed over the side of the pier during the ceremony.

Father Kane delivered the invocation.

Rev. Edward Kane, pastor of Holy Family Church of Canarsie, himself a veteran, delivered the invocation and spoke at the ceremony. There were nearly a dozen veterans in attendance braving the cold temperatures. Other attendees included U.S. Navy veteran Jeffrey Swansen, oper-

tions, that while our homeland may be attacked, our enemies will never defeat our republic or our way of life,” Wasserman told this paper.

News From Your Neighborhood CAR CRASHES INTO BED-STUY PIZZERIA

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Police are investigating after a car crashed into a recently closed pizza shop in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Tuesday. The accident happened around 5 a.m. at the Pizza Wraps pizzeria on Fulton Street, and the car appeared to have gone all the way inside the pizzeria. The owner, Joy Lacoa, had hoped to reopen the space as a Caribbean restaurant, according to ABC7. “I started crying because that’s my livelihood, all of my savings getting taken, now I have nothing you know, and this is it,” Lacoa said. Police are working to determine what caused the driver to lose control. 

MANY QUESTIONS UNANSWERED ABOUT EAST FLATBUSH CAR CRASH

EAST FLATBUSH — A day after a fatal crash at the intersection of East 55th Street and Foster Avenue in East Flatbush, police are still searching for one of the drivers, and parents Collin and Joan Dixon are still searching for answers. Their daughter, Joanna Dixon, was a passenger in a black Mazda SUV, PIX11 reported, and was killed in the collision. The driver of the sedan, whom police say may have been intoxicated, allegedly ran a stop sign, collided with a Nissan GT-R coupe and then ran off, leaving Dixon and another woman behind. There are also questions about the sobriety of Rohan Shaw, the off-duty police officer who was behind the wheel of the Nissan. Shaw was initially charged with driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, speeding and reckless driving. But he was ultimately released pending further investigation, PIX11 said. 

COBBLE HILL CIVIC LEADERS DECRY CONSTRUCTION TRUCKS

COBBLE HILL — Cobble Hill civic leaders say that officials at the city Department of Transportation are doing a poor job providing oversight at three construction sites within the footprint of the former Long Island College Hospital, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Fortis Property Group is building two 15and 36-story towers on opposing sides of Hicks Street as part of a five-building development project known as River Park. At the same time, New York University plans to build a medical center in front of the taller tower once it acquires the land from Fortis, the Brooklyn Paper reported. Cement trucks and 18-wheelers regularly proceed onto Hicks Street, then struggle to make the turn onto Pacific Street, which leads to the worksite. 

BROOKLYN WOMAN LEFT INFANT IN SUV’S BACK SEAT

CANARSIE — A Brooklyn woman is facing an investigation after she left her 1-year-old child in the back seat of an SUV that was towed away for being illegally parked, according to amNewYork. The incident began when the unidentified woman allegedly left the baby in the back seat of the locked vehicle in the parking lot of the Bayview Houses in Canarsie. A manager with the towing company, A-Twin Towing on East 81st Street, said the company has a contract to tow vehicles with no permits from the parking lot. After the mother called the towing company to say the baby was in the back seat, workers forced open the rear door and called Emergency Medical Services. Officers from the 69th Precinct were also alerted, as well as the Administration for Children’s Services, amNewYork said. 

ADAMS DEPLOYS CAMERAS ALONG NOSTRAND AVENUE

CROWN HEIGHTS — Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams recently joined the Nostrand Avenue Merchants Association, the 71st Precinct and elected officials to announce the expansion of Operation Safe Shopper, a program under which security cameras have been deployed outside local businesses with the help of the NYPD. The latest installation is along a stretch of Nostrand Avenue running from south Crown Heights to Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. The improvement comes as the holiday shopping season begins and foot traffic increases along major commercial corridors throughout Brooklyn, including Nostrand Avenue. “In the three years since we started Operation Safe Shopper, we have heard numerous success stories, and we look forward to creating a safer, more vibrant Nostrand Avenue with the expansion of this program,” said Adams.

The law makes essential common elements of a common interest community (such as a roof, exterior wall, heating and cooling equipment, elevator, stairwell, utility access, plumbing and electricity) eligible under FEMA’s Federal Assistance to Individuals and Households Program. It also makes common interest communities eligible under FEMA’s requirements for the removal of debris in the aftermath of a major disaster. 

HUGE BATTERY PROVIDES POWER IN EAST NEW YORK

EAST NEW YORK — A huge battery has been quietly powering part of eastern Brooklyn’s power grid, according to Bloomberg News. The 4.8-megwatt device — the biggest battery in New York City — sits beside the Gateway Center mall in East New York and has been quietly running for months at the borough’s edge, according to a joint statement yesterday from the property owner, Related Cos., and the Italian tech firm that installed it, Enel SpA. More huge batteries are on the way, Bloomberg says. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has a goal to install 3,000 megawatts of storage by 2030 as part of an effort to curb reliance on fossil fuels. The battery at the Gateway Center mall can supply 16.4 megawatt-hours of electricity.

Frank Seddio hosts annual holiday house-lighting ceremony Frank Seddio and Henry Bolus.

Judge Mark Partnow and family. BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM

K

ings County Democratic Chairperson F ra n k S e d d io held his much-anticipated house-lighting extravaganza on Friday, Dec. 6. Each year, Seddio invites family, friends, elected officials, community leaders, area residents and children of all ages to attend this festive event. The annual block long “block party” took place at Seddio’s law office at 9306 Flatlands Ave. Hundreds of people came to enjoy the winter wonderland that featured a live nativity scene with animals. There was a special guest appearance by Santa Claus, who was there to greet all the children. Those attending enjoyed Christmas carols sung by the Holy Family Church choir and students from P.S. 115. Seddio has been participating in the event and dressing up as Santa Claus since the 1960s and has been hosting it himself for the

past 33 years. “I love doing this,” Seddio told this paper. “This is my favorite thing in the whole world that I’ve done in my life. I’ve always considered this more like a vocation to me than anything else. It just means so much to me among all the things that I’ve been able to do in my life. It’s like the culmination of giving and that’s what I love most about it.” Seddio said that the greatest feeling was seeing the joy on the children’s faces when they come up to him. “What could be better than seeing the happy faces of the children! If that doesn’t make you happy, then I don’t know what will. It’s the absolute best,” he added. Every year, the display is dedicated to the memory of a local resident who has died. This year’s holiday display was dedicated to the memory of Josephine Bolus, the late wife of civic leader Henry Bolus, president of the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, and a longtime activist in her own right. “My wife passed away on

Santa with Bryston Bristol. July 25 of this year. We were married for 65 years,” said Bolus. “She was a member of many, many community organizations over the years, and she was truly a wonderful person.” Elected officials and civic leaders attending included

Santa with Jacob and Isabella Cruz. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli; Attorney General Letitia James; City Councilmember Brad Lander; Judge Mark Partnow and his wife Sue Ann Partnow, who serves as the female leader of the 59th Assembly District; Federation of

Alora Calistia and Jackson Copper with Santa.

Italian American Organizations President Jack Spatola; FIAO Brooklyn Director of External Affairs Joseph Rizzi; Judge Katherine Levine and Deputy Inspector Terrell Anderson, the commanding officer of Canarsie’s 69th Precinct.

“Frank and I go back 40 some odd years and I love coming to this event. If you look around at all the Merry Christmas signs and the way it’s all set up, it’s just truly amazing and inspirational,” Bolus stressed.

Central Brooklyn’s 19th- and early 20th-century rowhouses are a thing of beauty. Gates Avenue offers you glimpses of some very fine ones indeed, in Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant. If you keep walking, before you know it, this avenue will also take you across Bushwick to the Queens border.

The avenue, which was In a New York minute, named after American Revoyou’ll walk past the Royal lutionary War General HoraCastle Apartments. tio Gates, is walkable in a This six-story, red-brick day if you aren’t obsessively apartment complex at 20-30 photographing the handsome Gates Ave., aka 470-476 homes and churches. The designation report offers an interesting random fact about German-born architect Deitrich Wortmann. He was a member of the U.S. wrestling team at the 1904 Olympics. Gates Avenue begins at the intersection of Fulton Street and Clermont Avenue in Clinton Hill. When you look west on Fulton Street, you can see some of Downtown Brooklyn’s high-rise towers in the distance. When you face east, a small public space called Gateway Triangle is in your immediate line of sight. The first cross street you arrive at is Vanderbilt Avenue. This part of the neighborhood is not included in the Clinton Hill Historic District. But there are handsome brownstones and carriage houses here.

THE GOLD COAST

As you stand on the Gates Avenue corner of Clinton Avenue, take a minute to look up and down the street. It’s one that you should come back to for a separate stroll. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wealthy Brooklynites considered Clinton Avenue a hot spot to construct their mansions. Everybody called it the Gold Coast.

— Continued from page 16INB — They were following the example of Charles Pratt, the philanthropist who made a fortune in oil and founded nearby Pratt Institute. He built houses on this street as wedding gifts for his sons. The one at 229 Clinton Ave. is now used as a home for Pratt Institute’s president. On the Gates Avenue corner where you’re standing, you can see a magnificent pair of limestone mansions built in 1902 — 463 and 465 Clinton Ave. An architect named Mercein Thomas designed them in 1902. The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the Clinton Hill Historic District says the original owner of Beaux-Arts-style 463 Clinton Ave. was Morgan Bogart. His son, a surgeon named Dr. J. Bion Bogart, was the first person to live in the house. The original owner of neo-Italian Renaissance-style 465 Clinton Ave. was William Berri, the designation report says. He was the owner of a newspaper called the Brooklyn Standard Union and a prominent Republican leader. He was a member of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, his 1917 New York Times obituary says.

This dour fellow can be found on the facade of the Royal Castle Apartments.

AN 1860S CHURCH

As you continue on Gates Avenue, you leave Clinton Avenue’s mansions behind and see lovely brick and brownstone rowhouses and a couple eye-catching churches. For starters, there are lovely neo-Grec brownstones with mansard roofs on the corner of Waverly Avenue at 63 to 69 Gates Ave. An architect-builder named Joseph Kirby constructed them in 1880 for a grain merchant named Stephen R. Post, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. The next Gates Avenue corner, which is Washington Avenue, is graced by elegant, red-brick Brown Memorial Baptist Church, whose congregation was established in 1916. The congregation won grants from Partners in Preservation and the New York Landmarks Conservancy for the restoration of a Tiffany stained-glass window called “The Pilgrims,” which it completed in December 2014, the church’s website says. The building, whose address is 484 Washington Ave., was constructed in 1860. Its architectural style is early Romanesque Revival, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. The architect was Ebenezer L. Roberts. The congregation that built and originally occupied it was the Washington Avenue Baptist Church, the designation report says.

Limestone mansions 463 (left) and 465 Clinton Ave. stand on the corner of Gates Avenue. The Italianate brick rowhouse on this corner, whose address is 129 Gates Ave., has a storefront on its ground floor that was a drugstore back in the day. The current occupant is Locanda Vini E Olii — a restaurant that Michelin Guide 2020 calls a “jewel.” The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the historic district says Samuel Asman designed 129 Gates Ave. in 1877 for John Bahrenburg. The Italianate rowhouses next to it, from 131 through 143 Gates Ave., were constructed by a builder and lumber dealer named Jeremiah Johnson around 1864. A mansard roof was added to 131 Gates Ave. in the late 19th century and a new brick facade was added in the 1930s, the designation report says. At the intersection of Gates and Grand avenues, you’ll find the Vendome, a property with big historic significance. It’s Brooklyn’s oldest multi-family apartment building. Its address is 363 Grand Ave. An architect named Halstead Fowler designed the Vendome in 1887, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. It’s a Romanesque Revival-Queen Anne-style building. A plaque on the side of the property says it was threatened with demolition in 1987 but saved by neighborhood residents led by the late Ralph Walter.

TWO LOVELY CHURCHES

As you continue your stroll, you will walk through a few Clinton Hill blocks that aren’t included in the neighborhood’s historic district. One of the most eye-catching sights on these blocks is Mount Zion Tabernacle at 182 Gates Ave. on the corner of Irving Place. The church has a beautiful old-fashioned spire. When you cross Classon Avenue, you’re in BedfordStuyvesant. This boundary has been the subject of some debate over the past decade or so. There are no official government-designated boundaries for New York City neighborhoods. But Kenneth Jackson and John Manbeck’s book “The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn” says Classon Avenue is the dividing line between Clinton Hill and BedStuy, and that’s what I’m going with. By the way, there are handsome rowhouses on Classon Av-

enue at this Gates Avenue intersection. As you keep walking, you’ll notice a cluster of Romanesque Revival rowhouses on the south side of Gates Avenue near the corner of Franklin Avenue. On the north side of this block, the bright white facades of Mount Sinai Baptist Church at 241 Gates Ave. and adjacent homes at 247 through 253 Gates Ave. glow with a serene, almost otherworldly light when the sun is shining. The Baptist congregation has owned the church building since the 1950s, Finance Department records indicate.

THE DOE FUND

As you continue into Bed-Stuy, you pass eye-pleasing rowhouses. At the corner of Nostrand Avenue, there’s an old-fashioned apartment building called Norgate Plaza. This building has affordable units for low-income tenants, online postings indicate. Its address is 390 Nostrand Ave. St. George’s Episcopal Church, which is an individual city landmark, is on the corner of Gates and Marcy avenues. Worship services were first held there in 1888, the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the church says. The designer of the Victorian Gothic-style church at 800 Marcy Ave. was Richard Michell Upjohn. He and his father Richard Upjohn are best known in Brooklyn for their design of the main gates of Green-Wood Cemetery. On the Gates Avenue block between Marcy and Tompkins avenues, you’ll see a big four-story building that’s a Doe Fund facility. The Doe Fund is a nonprofit George and Harriet McDonald created in 1990 to assist homeless New Yorkers by providing occupational training, jobs, transitional housing, education and social services. This is the end of my first Gates Avenue stroll. The shadows are lengthening and it’s getting hard to take good photos. At a moment like this, when what I most need in life is caffeine, I head for Brooklyn Tea at 524 Nostrand Ave. It’s one of many excellent spots to get a bite to eat in Bed-Stuy.

RENOVATION PROJECTS, PAST AND PRESENT

The intersection of Gates and Washington avenues is another fine spot to pause and take in the scenery. The red-painted, brick multi-family building with squareheaded window bays at 461 Washington Ave. is especially eyecatching. Amzi Hill, one of Brooklyn’s distinguished 19th-century architects, designed the four-story building, the designation report says. In 1981, when the designation report was published, this property was abandoned. It has since been renovated and divided into four condos. One of them sold this year for $1.9 million, city Finance Department records indicate. Nearby, on the corner of St. James Place, a renovation project is nearing completion. The address of the Italianate rowhouse is 109 Gates Ave. It has gleaming glass storefronts on its first and second floors which are similar to storefronts that were added to the building in the early 20th century. A builder named John Funk constructed 109 Gates Ave. and the rowhouses beside it in the 1860s, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report indicates.

BROOKLYN’S FIRST APARTMENT BUILDING

Another important Gates Avenue intersection in the Clinton Hill Historic District is the one at Cambridge Place.

This is historic Brown Memorial Baptist Church.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Dec. 11, 1941

ON DEC. 11, 1893, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Throngs of shoppers are visiting the dry-goods establishment of Bloomingdale Bros., Third avenue and Fifty-ninth street, New York, to take advantage of the big book sale. Thousands of volumes of fine books were bought of Charles E. Gould, the receiver for the United States Book company, the International Book company, the Horendon Book company and for Lovell, Coryell & Co., in anticipation of the holiday season. These enormous stocks were obtained in some instances at less than the cost of the paper. This is doubtless the greatest sale of books for years, whole volumes of standard works selling in many cases for less than $1. The stock comprises books worthy of any library, such as Cooper, Irving, Byron, Scott, Dickens, Thackeray, Hawthorne and Macauley. Among the French writers are Dumas and Sand. Many of the books are nicely bound in cloth and gold.”  ON DEC. 11, 1921, the Eagle reported, “Washington (AP) — A new quadruple agreement to preserve peace in the waters of the Pacific was announced to the world today by the United States, Great Britain, Japan and France. As a consideration of the international realignment, Great Britain and Japan agreed to consign to the scrap heap the Anglo-Japanese alliance, long viewed with appreciation in both America and Asia. The provisions of the agreement, which is in the form of a ten-year treaty, are confined to the ‘region of the Pacific Ocean.’ Under them, the Powers are to respect each other’s island possessions and to meet in consultation if a dispute arises or if the rights of any of the four are threatened by any other Power.”  ON DEC. 11, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Washington (UP) — Germany and Italy went to war against the United States today, and Congress prepared for immediate action on an impending request by President Roosevelt for a resolution formally recognizing existence of hostilities. The official German war declaration was delivered to the State Department at 9:25 a.m., while the Italian war notice was handed to the American charge d’affaires in Rome by Count Galeazzo Ciano, Italian Foreign Minister. The action completed the Axis cycle of aligning its full military and naval forces against the United States, following by four days Japan’s assault on this nation’s Pacific strongholds. The greatest war in the world’s history became a full reality for an America which for months has been on a basis of undeclared shooting with Germany and Italy. Members of Congress pledged full support to the President in the extension of the war and said it might last for years.”  ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Eagle reported, “Indiana, Pa. (U.P.) — Jimmy Stewart, film actor, plays a ‘supporting’ role today at the wedding of his 82-year-old father to a Canadian widow in a home-town ceremony before about 40 friends. The lanky cinema star plans to be best man for his octogenarian father, Alexander Stewart, a widower who owns and operates the town’s hardware store. Stewart, a life-long resident of this small western Pennsylvania mountain community, will wed Mrs. J.J. Stothart of St. James, New Brunswick, at the home of Mrs. Robert Dingman, a next-door neighbor, and a niece of the bride-to-be. The elder Stewart was reported by his family to be ‘bursting with excitement’ over the impending ceremony. His famous son arrived after an overnight train ride from New York, accompanied by his wife, former model Gloria McLean. Stewart was first married in 1906 to Elizabeth Ruth Stewart, Jimmy’s mother. She was the daughter of a Civil War veteran and steel company founder. She died here Aug. 2, 1953.”

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Dec. 12, 1941

ON DEC. 12, 1859, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The ship Henrietta, which arrived here on Saturday evening from Leghorn, has on board a very small horse. It is a stallion, of a clear jet black, perfect in shape, with black mane and tail, and is about 7 hands high. During the voyage he has had the run of the ship like any ordinary dog.”  ON DEC. 12, 1861, the Eagle published a letter which read: “Some near and dear relatives of mine crossed the Atlantic and went to London expressly to hear the Oratorio of the Messiah performed by three thousand artists and they tell me that the performance of the glorious Hallelujah Chorus alone repaid them for their trouble and expense. Imagine, dear Mr. Editor, three thousand singers in the ‘King of Kings’ and ‘Lord of Lords’ and ‘He shall reign forever Hallelujah,’ in this great chorus of Handel! This is an age of improvement. Perhaps this time next year under the auspices and influences mentioned, we may hear with delight the grand chorus of the Messiah, the Creation and the Elijah artistically performed by young men and maidens of Brooklyn.”  ON DEC. 12, 1930, the Eagle reported, “Washington (AP) — Twelve thousand tons of granite have been blasted from the stony heart of the Black Hills to make place for a portrait of George Washington. Gutzon Borglum, famous sculptor in charge, has watched with satisfaction the progress being made on the Mouth Rushmore Memorial in South Dakota. So pleased, in turn, was the commission supervising the project that it used Borglum’s poetic words today in its second annual report to Congress. The sculptor had called the job a cool-headed setting down of ‘a few epochal facts regarding the accomplishments of Old World radicals, who shook the shackles of oppression from their light feet and fled despotism to people a continent; who built an empire and rewrote the philosophy of freedom, and compelled the world to accept its wiser, happier forms of government.” Nick Clifford, the last known survivor of the workers who carved Mount Rushmore, died on Nov. 23, 2019. He was 98.  ON DEC. 12, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Manila (UP) — Three daredevil American aviators flew to fame — and one to death — today against the Japanese. Terse statements from military and naval sources in Manila told the story of how American and Filipino aviators struck back against powerful enemy assaults. The name of 26-year-old Capt. Colin Kelly Jr. of Florida, who was killed in action, heads the roll of heroes.” It was also reported, “The metropolitan area went about its normal business today, the people calm and resolute in the face of total Axis warfare, but behind the scenes plans materialized for the evacuation of women and children, the aged and disabled from congested areas in the event of air raids.”  ON DEC. 12, 1952, the Eagle reported, “London (U.P.) — A Congregationalist minister criticized the Royal Family today for giving a toy gun recently to four-year-old Prince Charles, heir to the British throne. The Rev. Hubert Oliver wrote in a church magazine: ‘The Royal Family usually sets us such a good example, but I am amazed by this gift.’”

Boro dept. stores outsell Manhattan TO GOODS , SERVICES & EMPLOYMENT BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE DEC. 12. 1946

With an approximate 42 percent increase in dollar volume over last year’s Christmas sales, officials of three downtown department stores agreed today that “we are doing better than Manhattan stores. The present pre-Yule buying boom got underway the first week of December, when customers mobbed the stores, fearing that supplies would be limited because of the coal strike, according to a survey among buyers conducted by the Brooklyn Eagle. Along with a run on luxury and non-essential buying, customers this year were intent on buying hundreds of items available in limited quantities for the first time in five years.

Buyers pointed out that the stores were trying to hold the OPA ceilings, with “slight increases in articles on which production costs have been raised. The executives of Loeser’s, the Namm and Abraham & Straus based their claim that Brooklyn is topping Manhattan on a report released by a large Manhattan department store recently, indicating that its sales had gone up 25 percent on a “typical day, as compared to last year. Announcing that on that same day sales showed an increase of 40 percent at Abraham & Straus, William Tobey, sales promotion manager, asserted that “we are doing better than the New York stores because the shopping public finds more assortment in the Brooklyn stores.

Annual Celebration of Light has kicked off BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

L

et the Christmas lights shine bright! This year marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Celebration of Light, a month-long series of tree lightings held at 42 churches throughout the borough sponsored by Maimonides Medical Center. On Tuesday, Nov. 26, the hospital held a kick-off event for the glittering celebration at which representatives of the parishes were given donations to help fund the expenses for the lightings as well as decorations. The event was coordinated by Maimonides Executive Vice President Douglas Jablon and his office, It was hosted by Maimonides Board Chair Eugene Keilin and President and CEO Kenneth Gibbs in the boardroom at the Eisenstadt Administration Building at 4802 10th Avenue. For 25 years Maimonides has awarded $1,000 grants to parishes to help light up their churches at Christmas. Gibbs said that the hospital considers the community outreach an opportunity to carry out the Hospital’s mission to the greater Brooklyn area. The co-sponsor of the annual program is

Long and DeLosa construction firm in Sunset Park. Brian Long said that the program began 25 years ago with the construction of a crèche (nativity scene) on the lawn of Visitation Monastery, Bay Ridge, and has now expanded into the surrounding areas. Long delivered the welcoming remarks before an invocation by Msgr. David Cassato, pastor of St. Athanasius Church, which was followed by a moment of silence in memory of local civic leader Larry Morrish, who started the program with former State Sen.Marty Golden, Long and his partner John DeLosa. Long explained that the tradition began at Visitation Monastery and grew from there with many more churches being added yearly. “After Larry passed a few years ago, we set a stone at Visitation by the nativity scene in his memory,” Long told this paper. He credited Maimonides Executive Vice President of Patient Relations Douglas Jablon with being an instrumental part of the program. “This has become a really important event for Maimonides,” said Long. “And Douglas Jablon has been behind this 150 percent. It just gets bigger and bigger every year,” he added. The tree lightings began on Saturday Nov. 30 and will continue through Saturday, Dec. 21.

BETTER TIMES

o you recall the 1930s song “Happy Days Are Here Again?” I was singing it under my breath most of the day that the Wilpon family announced that they would be selling their controlling interest in the Mets. My only regret is that they will continue to have some role for the next five years. The Mets had a decent year despite the ownership. And that is the point. Few management decisions seem to manifest themselves in wins. Often, the lackluster nature of the ownership can be traced to poor player acquisition and handling during the playing season. How the Mets can annually become the orthopedic center of baseball with major players missing entire seasons is a

O

mystery for me and many fans alike. The Mets have been fortunate in having younger players attempting to make a name for themselves waiting in the wings who fill these big holes caused by so many injuries. Then, after a few fine seasons, the Mets, instead of making an effort to sign these players to longer term contracts, allow them to be picked up by other teams or simply trade or sell them in poorly regarded actions. A New York City sports franchise, regardless of the sport, will be one of the most valuable franchises in America. The New York City media market alone provides the Mets, even when they are losing, with more revenue than most any other baseball team in either

league. Yet, the Wilpon family, instead of using the large sums of cash they accumulate to build a playoff-quality team, makes decisions based on making money for itself. This could be a result of the enormous financial losses the Wilpons took in the Bernie Madoff scandal. Although it is too early to know what the future holds for the team under the new ownership of hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen, we do know that he has indicated his intentions of spending the money necessary to make the franchise a big winner. Inasmuch as he is super-wealthy, losing the Wilpons and gaining Cohen makes me feel that we are in for some really exciting times. Let’s Go Mets!

UNIFORM DECISIONS

n Dec. 9, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo called for the Violence Against Women Act to be reauthorized. The law, originally passed with bipartisan support in 1994, bars abusers from owning firearms. Two days earlier, one of his sergeants was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance. Directing his comments to Senators McConnell, Cornyn and Cruz, Acevedo said, “I don’t want to hear about how much they support law enforcement… who killed our sergeant? A boyfriend abusing his girlfriend.” The House of Representatives passed a VAWA reauthorization bill months ago, but the NRA-opposed legislation stalled in the Re public a n- c ont r ol le d Senate. It’s indicative of the hypocrisy of some lawmakers, who proclaim they stand up for law enforcement, but

then shrink when it comes to providing protections to keep officers safe. The same people are often quick to attack anyone who questions any action by any member of the police, accusing them of hating cops. But wanting those who are entrusted with a great deal of authority to be held to the highest standards is not an act of hate. There are debates to be had about how to police better and more effectively, in terms of protecting our communities, as well as how to serve them. Acknowledging that certain communities have different impressions of policing, based on their experiences, isn’t hateful. No group should be generalized, but that cuts both ways. It is not right to say all members of a particular group are inherently bad, but it’s also wrong to say they are all infallible. If no cop ever violated police

policy or the law, every police force wouldn’t have an internal affairs department. But they do, because there are instances when people in positions of authority do something wrong. This view that citizens must never question law enforcement comes from above. The nation’s top lawman, Attorney General William Barr, said last week that, “They have to start showing... the respect The protection that police officers provide is not something that is held over citizens’ heads in exchange for reverence and support that law enforcement deserves and if communities don’t give that support and respect, they might find themselves without the police protection they need.” The protection that

on Public Finance represents an unconstitutional delegation of legislative authority to a nine-member unelected commission. If we win, the $100 million state public campaign finance scheme, which is no more than your taxpayer dollars being used to help out politicians you may not support run for office, will not go forward. It will also stop efforts to eliminate third parties, for whose candidates as many as 600,000 New Yorkers each year choose to vote. The Democratic effort reduces political choice and, as an extension, free speech. We feel we have strong arguments as well as simple

logic on our side. In my view, if we win, you win, with $100 million being saved at a time that the state has a record $6.1 billion budget deficit. *** I wish to express my condolences to Assemblymember Peter Abbate on the loss of his mother. Mrs. Abbate was just short of her 101st birthday. Talking with Peter, it sounds like she had a wonderful life. Regardless, this is a sad time for the Abbate family. They are in my prayers. On a happier note, best wishes to State Sen. Andrew Gounardes who celebrated his marriage to Melanie Graf. I wish them many, many years of happiness.

MATTER OF FACT BY JAY BROWN

police officers provide is not something that is held over citizens’ heads in exchange for reverence. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Law enforcement officers serve and protect because they are professionals and that is their job. Going even higher, to the president, we see this simplistic view of others in uniform: the military. In the past few weeks, President Trump has pardoned or granted clemency to three service members. He intervened on behalf of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher who was acquitted of war crimes, but convicted of posing for photographs holding a dead teenage ISIS captive up by the hair. Fellow SEALs

claimed he had stabbed the teen in the neck while medics tried to treat him. Fellow SEAL snipers had also reported that Gallagher shot civilians, including two young girls and an elderly man. He was charged with threatening to kill those who reported him. Trump intervened on his behalf and ordered that the prosecutors in the case be punished. Last month, Trump issued pardons to two soldiers charged with murdering civilians in unrelated cases. Again, members of their own platoons testified against them, but the president declared, “We’re going to take care of our warriors and I will always stick up for our great fighters.” Excusing terrible actions isn’t taking care of warriors or sticking up for great

fighters, because these people are neither of those things. The great people are those who speak up, despite the danger it puts them in. “Support the troops” is a catchy slogan, but if you take the side of a few soldiers who commit murder over many service members who report those crimes, while stripping food stamps from thousands of veterans struggling with food insecurity, who exactly are you supporting? Calling someone a cop hater is an easy retort, but if you demand that nobody ever criticize the police because they only do great work, and then you declare police crime statistics showing they are doing a good job can’t be trusted, why should anyone trust anything you say?

Third Ave. Merchants party, collect ‘toys for tots’ in need

Led by President Bob Howe, members of the Merchants of Third Avenue BusinessCivic Association gathered with friends last week for a holiday party at the Greenhouse Cafe, where they were welcomed by hosts Bob Daquara and John Keegan. The party served as an opportunity to collect toys that will bring smiles to the faces of young children battling cancer this holiday season through the Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation. “The event is an annual celebration of the longstanding relationship between our members and the greater Bay Ridge community,” Howe said. “We know that good communities are built around responsive

marketplaces and, for decades, that’s how it’s worked on Third Avenue.” The collection bin overflowed with new, unwrapped toys, which served as the price of admission for the evening’s invited guests. Toy trains, board games, Lego sets, remote-controlled vehicles and puzzles were among the most popular donated items. “The Olivia Boccuzzi Foundation does such great work on behalf of children who are battling cancer. It’s our honor as merchants, neighbors and family men and women to give back to help make the holidays brighter for those in need,” Howe said.
