Coney Island celebrates America’s birthday with annual fireworks display

Raise a glass to pomp and parade, games, bells, fireworks and freedom. On America’s 243rd birthday, the night sky was red, white and blue in Coney Island. For the thousands of spectators, it was a dazzling sight. Thursday, July 4 marked the sixth annual free Steeplechase Spectacular Fireworks Show, organized by the Alliance for Coney Island, a not-for-profit organization that works to improve the iconic neighborhood. Alexandra Silversmith, the

executive director of the Alliance, said, “Unlike the majority of other options in New York City, Coney Island is the only place where you can spend the whole day with your family and celebrate the Fourth of July. There’s food, there are rides and you can go to the beach.” A host of events preceded the fireworks, including Nathan’s annual Hot Dog Eating Contest. This year, Joey Chestnut of San Jose, California and Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, Nevada won the competition again, Chestnut for the 12th time in 13 years and Sudo for the sixth year in a row. Later in the evening, attendees filled the stadium at MCU Park

to watch the Brooklyn Cyclones compete against the Aberdeen IronBirds. The amusement areas and businesses were also open throughout the day. At 9:50 p.m., spectators gathered on the Boardwalk to watch the fireworks. “We’re happy to provide that free programing for a special night to remember,” said Silversmith. Enza Naimo, one of the attendees and a resident of Brooklyn, relayed how fulfilling it was to be at Coney with her family, celebrating the nation amidst a diverse crowd. “I was able to experience what it’s all really about,”

Naimo said. “Different groups of people celebrated by playing their music, dancing and eating. They were having fun.” Aside from the Fourth of July festivities, the Alliance also sponsors fireworks every Friday during the summer, between West 10th and West 15th Street, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Reaching-Out, a mainstay in Bensonhurst that sponsors a food pantry and assists clients in applying for government programs, operates out of a space at 7708 New Utrecht Ave. But Neve said he has seen a dramatic increase in the number of families coming to him for help. That fact, coupled with stagnant funding levels from government and private sources, has forced Neve to tighten his belt. Reaching-Out barely has enough money to continue assisting the families that are already on its roster, Neve said. Neve told the Home Reporter in a recent interview that money is so tight that he had to stop adding new clients in 11 of the 16 ZIP code areas his group serves. “When Fr. Michael Gelfant of St. Finbar R.C. Church recently heard of our situation, he contacted me and said he will do what he can to help,

and yes he did. Reaching Out Community Services is so grateful to him,” Neve said in a statement his organization emailed to the community. “This type of support gives us a reason not to give up,” Neve added. The $10,000 from St. Finbar will “help us overcome our financial challenge where we are lacking funds necessary to help keep our doors open for those dealing with food insecurity,” Neve stated. “Thank you so much Fr. Michael Gelfant for your support, you truly have encouraged me today, and I hope I can find further support for the sake of those who need this organization,” Neve stated. Neve said he is seeing a sharp increase in people coming to his office for help, despite statistics showing a strong U.S. economy. Reaching-Out, which has been open for nearly 30 years, might be forced to make drastic cuts if it does not get more government funding. A recent City Council allocation of $30,000 is welcome, but is not enough to keep the program open, according to Neve. If Reaching-Out doesn’t obtain more funding, Neve

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it may have taken less time to build the city than it has to build the ramp to Shore Road Park at 97th Street in Bay Ridge. The project’s successful completion — which began after the ramp partially collapsed in April 2016 — could well be due to an ultimatum City Councilmember Justin Brannan delivered to the Parks Department in February that was first reported in this paper. The councilmember threatened to sue if the ramp, which provides convenient access to fields in the park below, was not reopened by the end of June. “I don’t want to take too big of a victory lap because it took too damn long, and no one is more aware of that than me,” Brannan told this paper. The ramp saga began when structural engineers from the Parks Department determined the partially collapsed ramp needed to be closed immediately for public safety. In July 2017, plans were revealed for the new ramp’s

ADA-compliant design. Over two million was allocated by the mayor, but repairs didn’t start. For some residents, getting to Shore Road Park without the ramp has not been easy. Coaches carrying large bags of sports equipment must walk for blocks to get down to the field. Romeo Petric, athletic director for St. Patrick Catholic Academy and Fontbonne Hall Academy, is one such coach. “Being able to blame the mayor is one way to look at it but there’s a heck of a lot of people to blame for this disaster,” he said. Brannan is pleased with the new ramp. “What we had before was this primitive ramp. Before, when you sat in these benches, you couldn’t see anything. Now you have a spectacular view. There’s nothing else like this here right now,” he added.

It might not yet be time for a victory lap around the pre-K schoolyard but it's safe to say the mayor and city councilmembers are on the right path for pre-K and CBO pay parity with the DOE. On Tuesday, July 9, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Corey Johnson joined Labor Relations Commissioner Renee Campion, District Council 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido, District Council 1707 Executive Director Kim Medina and Day Care Council of New York Executive Director Andrea Anthony in the Blue Room at City Hall to announce a tentative contract agreement between early childhood care providers, District Council 1707 Local 205

and the Day Care Council of New York. "This is great news for our children and our families and the future of early childhood education in New York City," said de Blasio. De Blasio announced the new agreement which would up the salary for a starting preK or CBO teacher with a master's degree by $20,000, on par with DOE pay. The contract extension will benefit 4,241 early childhood educators. The tentative agreement provides a pathway to pay parity between certified early childhood education teachers and entry-rate Department of Education salaries by October 1, 2021. "All New York City teachers deserve the same pay, the same benefits and the same respect," said Johnson.

The tentative agreement includes additional compensation for non-certified teachers and support staff and health care cost reductions. Non-union teachers will not immediately benefit from the pay parity arrangement, however. "I find it amazing that once again, our mayor and City Council are slapping each other on the back and congratulating themselves on the issue of parity," said Alice Mulligan, director at Our Saviour's Lutheran Preschool at 414 80th Street in Bay Ridge. "Today, Mayor de Blasio granted long overdue parity to only those that work in unionized child care facilities and has completely dismissed the rest of us," she said. "What happened and why don't we matter?"

According to a police spokesperson, a single report is on file for the eatery, for a June 20 incident in which several young teens threw smoke bombs and snappers inside the shop. No injuries were reported. The shop owner’s daughter Rana Ismail says the problem has persisted for over two months and they want the suspects caught. “It started with them steal-

ing donuts from the display table,” she told this paper. “Then they started kicking over the table … They kicked it over again, it broke and we had to get it replaced.” Ismail says the destruction got worse from there. “They took the table and they broke our glass with it and they pushed the door so hard that they broke the ice cream fridge,” she said. “This was happening every few weeks.”

Then smoke bombs and firecrackers were thrown into the store. Following the incident, Ismail called the police. She claims the young vandals returned later that night. She later posted surveillance footage on social media. Ismail received letters from witnesses describing the suspects as being in the sixth to ninth grades, and stating they’ve seen the teens harassing other establishments.

U.S. Rep. Max Rose has organized elected officials to push for new parking regulations outside the Dyker Heights Post Office. Rose and four of his colleagues, state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, Assemblymembers Peter Abbate and Mathylde Frontus and Councilmember Justin Brannan, are calling on the Department of Transportation to establish a “No Standing Except for USPS Vehicles” zone on 13th Avenue between 83rd and 84th streets. The new regulation would allow postal workers to park outside the post office over-

night instead of on surrounding streets, Rose said. Residents have complained to elected officials and to Community Board 10 about postal workers hogging parking in the neighborhood. “It’s been a problem for a long time,” Dyker Heights Civic Association President Fran Vella-Marrone told the Home Reporter. The elected officials have written a letter to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg requesting the “No Standing” zone. “USPS carriers’ struggle to find parking will be eased and residents and small business owners will no longer have their property impeded

by commercial vehicles.” the lawmakers wrote. Adding to the parking problem is the fact that the USPS has had to increase the number of trucks it uses at the Dyker Heights Post Office because of an increase in deliveries generated by Amazon, according to a postal worker. “We went from three trucks to seven trucks,” the postal worker told the Home Reporter last year. The same postal worker estimated that employees operating out of the Dyker Heights Post Office handle 3,000 parcels a day, much of it from Amazon. DOT officials did not return numerous messages.

A seemingly endless round of applause erupted on June 19 at the 68th Precinct as Police Officers Nicholas Mosby and Stephanie Drodz were honored as Cops of the Month at the precinct’s latest community council meeting for nabbing a man who allegedly exposed himself to two children in Bay Ridge. According to Capt. Robert Conwell, the commanding officer of the 68th Precinct, on May 17, at around 6:15 p.m., the NYPD received a call from a distraught father who said that a man had flashed his two sons, an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old. The incident happened near Vista Place and 68th Street.

PERPS NEARLYSNATCH MAN’S BAG: Three crooks approached a 27-year-old man who was walking on 72nd Street between Third and Fourth Avenues on July 6 at around 3 a.m. and tried to steal his bag. Cops say that one of the three punched the victim in the head and said, “Give me all you got.” The bag’s strap broke when the thieves tried to grab it. They then fled empty-handed westbound along 72nd Street on foot. No arrests have been made. MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED STABBING: A 59-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing another man at Ridge Boulevard and 69th Street on July 7 at around 8 p.m. Cops say the victim walked into the 68th Precinct with a stab wound to the chest and gave officers a description of the suspect. Police later arrested a man who matched the description; police say he was holding a can of beer and a knife with blood on it when he was collared. MAN BUSTED FOR ATTACKING 78-YEAROLD MAN: A 38-year-old man was arrested for

As soon as the officers had obtained surveillance footage of the incident, Conwell said, they disseminated it across media platforms, and urged residents of the borough to contact the police if they had seen, or knew, the man. The footage shows a person cops believe to be the suspect in all dark clothing, wearing glasses, approaching the two children, showing them his genitals and fleeing eastbound on foot. But the flasher’s gaze straight into the camera was what gave him away, Conwell

told his listeners. Sharing the close-up, the officers asked anyone with information to help them identify the flasher. On May 21, Mosby and Drodz arrested the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Jianxing Cai of Bensonhurst. Cai was charged with lewdness, exposure of a person and an act injurious to children under age 17. Although Drodz was not at the meeting to receive her award because of a line-ofduty injury, Mosby gladly accepted the honor on her behalf, too. “They worked effectively and quickly to stop the perpetrator who endangered the safety of young children,” Conwell said. Cai’s next appearance is scheduled for Aug. 1 in Kings County Criminal Court.

GUNPOINT ROBBERY: An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with a gunpoint robbery inside an apartment near 19th Avenue and 84th Street on July 2 at around 8 p.m. Cops say the suspect was one of a trio who knocked on the apartment door then pushed their way into the apartment, terrorizing the three people inside. One of the robbers wielded a gun and demanded that the 29-year-old man who opened the door give him “everything.” The trio ransacked the living room, then went into two different bedrooms where people were sleeping, threatening the occupants with the gun and taking their possessions. According to the police, the responding officers saw two men matching the description of the suspects coming out of the apartment building when they arrived. One of the suspects ran off, but they collared the other, who allegedly threw the box of sneakers he was holding at them and attempted to flee. Cops arrested him and recovered the gun at the scene.

MAN BUSTED FOR STEALING $5: A 32-yearold man was arrested for allegedly threatening an 18year-old man and stealing $5 from him at 18th Avenue and 81st Street on July 5 at around 6:55 p.m. Cops say the suspect told the victim to give him money or he would punch him in the face. The victim then took $5 from his pocket which cops allege the suspect grabbed. THREE AGAINST ONE: Three men allegedly chased and robbed a 41-year-old man at 64th Street and 17th Avenue on July 5 at around 4:30 a.m. According to the police, the victim was walking home after parking his car on 64th Street between New Utrecht Avenue and 16th Avenue when the suspects, all described to be in their 20s, followed him. The victim tried to run away but the crooks chased and surrounded him. He handed $80 to one of his pursuers, who then fled eastbound on 64th Street towards 18th Avenue on foot. No arrests have been made. ONE ARRESTED

SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM: An unknown crook broke into a deli at Avenue S and West Ninth Street and stole ice cream on July 3 at 10:30 p.m. According to the police, the man gained access by kicking in the plexiglass at the bottom of the door, then crawling into the store. No arrests have been made. BURGLARY SPREE: Cops say a clothing store near 21st Avenue and 86th Street was robbed on July 6 by two men who stole several items of clothing before taking off in an unknown direction. No arrests have been made.

BAY RIDGE — A new ramp to Shore Road Park at 97th Street in Bay Ridge has finally been finished, according to the Brooklyn Reporter. The previous ramp at that location collapsed in April 2016. Earlier this year, Councilmember Justin Brannan (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights) threatened to sue the Parks Department if the ramp, which provides access to ballfields in the park below, wasn’t opened by the end of June. Parks finally opened the ramp on June 30. 

BENSONHURST — Assemblymember William Colton (DGravesend-Bensonhurst-Bath Beach-Dyker Heights) has demanded that the city Department of Transportation repave the crosswalks at Bay Parkway and 86th Street. “The asphalt at that location is dangerously cracked, potholes are all over the roadway and this is unsafe,” Colton said in a news release. “These conditions are hazardous to the pedestrians, individuals crossing with strollers, children and especially the seniors with the shopping carts.” 

BOROUGHWIDE — Brooklyn-born poet Marie Ponsot, who won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Robert Frost Poetry Award, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the Poetry Foundation and several other awards, died on Friday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at age 98. When she was a child, some of her poems were published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. She graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn and earned a master’s degree from Columbia. She wrote several collections of poetry, most notably “The Bird Catcher,” and translated 69 children’s books from French. She also taught poetry at NYU, Columbia University and the YMCA. BROWNSVILLE — An argument between two women turned deadly Monday night at the Sutter Avenue subway station in Brownsville, and a suspect is now in custody, according to CBSNewYork. The victim was identified as LaTanya Watson, who worked at Fairway in Red Hook. She was stabbed in the neck, face and arms. Police said the suspect accidentally stabbed herself in the arm during the struggle, and investigators were able to follow the trail of blood to her grandmother’s house. Watson was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. 

BUSHWICK — Honig Capital Partners and Brickman Real Estate have received $15.2 million in refinancing for the Box Factory, a creative office and entertainment space at 1519 Decatur St. in Bushwick. Until 2017, the building served as a warehouse, according to Commercial Property Executive. Now, the three-story property features office spaces on each floor, an outdoor courtyard, a bike storage room, new windows, new restrooms and a new elevator. Mission Capital provided the loan. 

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Representatives of the city’s Economic Development Corp., the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and Community Board 2 joined Councilmember Stephen Levin at the opening of temporary green space at Willoughby Square in Downtown Brooklyn. The temporary park will be open until summer 2020, when construction of a permanent park is expected to begin. “I’m thrilled to open this space for the community to enjoy this summer,” Levin said. Planning for the development of Willoughby Square has been under way since 2010. 

EAST FLATBUSH — A motorist who was rushing to the hospital, trying to save a friend who had a gunshot wound, crashed his car two blocks away from Kings County Hospital, according to the Daily News. The driver and his passenger had been sitting in the driver’s car on Union Street and Utica Avenue when an attacker blasted eight or nine bullets at them, police said. The driver floored the gas, driving as fast as possible, running red lights, until he inadvertently slammed into a Nissan Altima. Medics rushed the wounded man the rest of the way to the hospital.

Thousands will flock to Downtown Brooklyn this weekend to celebrate the rich culture and influence of Caribbean and Latinx culture and music in Brooklyn — and to dance late, late into the night. The seventh annual Afro-Latino Festival begins on Friday. This year’s theme is Reclaiming Spaces & Culture, a tribute to Brooklyn’s own Caribbean and Afro-Latino communities. The initiative, made possible by a partnership between Eugene and the Council of Jewish Organizations of Flatbush, will help local youth ages 14-24 gain valuable work experience in the summer. “I have first-hand experience with providing opportunities to young people through my work running a non-profit organization, so I understand how crucial these programs are to our students, and to the families who need to place their children in a safe and structured environment when they are out of school,” Eugene said. 

FULTON FERRY LANDING — The Ample Hills Creamery, a popular ice cream shop, has opened in the former Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory space near Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, according to News 12 Brooklyn. The chain has about a dozen locations. The shop already has long lines of people waiting for ice cream. The owners say the location, on a pier with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge, is an ideal place to enjoy ice cream. 

GOWANUS — A woman was slashed by a stranger outside Whole Foods in Gowanus after he greeted her with a “hello,” according to the New York Post. The suspect, identified as Rodney Robinson, a Philadelphia resident, approached the woman from behind as she was loading groceries into her sister’s car on Monday night, the Post said. After being slashed, the woman jumped into her car and fled the parking lot. A security guard pulled his gun on the suspect and held him there until police arrived. 

GREENPOINT — Vinnie’s Pizzeria at 253 Nassau Ave. in Greenpoint announced recently on Instagram that Park Slope-based De Nonna Rosa will take over the store. De Nonna Rosa plans to retain the entire staff, according to Greenpointers, a local blog. Vinnie’s will retain its store on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. “Greenpoint has always been a blessing, a peaceful slice of Brooklyn that seems so different than anywhere else in New York,” a spokesperson for Vinnie’s wrote online. 

EAST NEW YORK — A subway commuter was slashed in the neck, arm and face during an argument at the East New York-Broadway Junction subway station, according to NY1 News. They argued in the early morning hours of Friday, then their argument got physical. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his wounds.

MILL BASIN — A knifepoint robbery and beating in Mill Basin last month was caught on video, and now police are looking for the perp, according to NY1 News. A 56-yearold man was walking on Strickland Avenue near Avenue V when a man in a white shirt approached him, took out a knife and demanded money. The assailant threw the victim to the ground and hit him in the face several times. He was able to steal a cellphone and $130 in cash.

Kirsten Gillibrand have asked the U.S. Post Office Inspector General to conduct an audit of mail delivery in the North Brooklyn ZIP codes 11211, 11222 and 11259. “New Yorkers deserve better than the inadequate mail delivery service that many Brooklyn residents in Williamsburg, East Williamsburg and Greenpoint are getting right now,” said Schumer. “Not only are these problems, including missing and late mail, an inconvenience to residents, but they could pose real problems for people awaiting critical and time-sensitive personal and professional mail.” 

PROSPECT PARK — Three people were robbed at gunpoint while relaxing in Prospect Park in the early morning on Sunday. Two women, ages 20 and 21, and a 20-year-old man were “just chilling” in a field in the park near Third Street in Park Slope when two men walked up to them, according to the New York Post. One of the men pulled out a handgun and demanded their wallets and cellphones, police said. The park-goers gave up their property, whereupon the thieves fled. 

RED HOOK — A Brooklyn toddler became sicker as NYCHA sought to avoid cleaning out lead contamination in his family’s home, according to the New York Post. “He probably wouldn’t have been sick,” if NYCHA had addressed the issue the first time that lead was found in Red Hook East, the boy’s mother, Sherron Paige, said. Elevated lead levels were first found in Kyan’s blood in 2017. The city Health Department sent its own inspectors to the apartment, and they found four “hot spots” there. However, NYHCA then sent its own inspectors, who said the amount of lead wasn’t enough to justify a cleanup. After persistent complaints, the city finally ordered NYCHA to clean the apartment, the Post said. 

WEEKSVILLE — Black VegFest, a two-day outdoor vegan festival, will take place at Weeksville on Aug. 10-11. BlackVeg Fest is a vegan festival focused on black culture, animal welfare, health and wellness. The festival will include a workshop room dedicated to exercise, yoga and mental health. It will also include entertainment for children and adults, including food and fitness demonstrations, virtual reality, double-dutch, chess, games and an outdoor fitness competition. 

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg pizza shop Best Pizza has just opened a new location in Montauk, and an Instagram post calling for “experienced NY pizzamen only” as staffers has been getting some flak, according to New York Eater. Several women complained that “pizza maker” would work as well. A spokesperson for the restaurant responded, “Men, women, Martians, I don’t care as long as you can make 20 pizzas.”

An American flag cascaded down the Brooklyn Bridge, rainbows above and cheering crowds below, as the nation’s biggest Fourth of July celebration took to the East River. The 43rd annual Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display returned to south of the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014, with more than 70,000 shells from four barges and 100 spots on the bridge itself, kicking off at 9:30 p.m. This year’s theme was “American cinema,” featuring scores from “The Wizard of Oz,” “Star Wars” and “The Godfather.” But from Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, no music could be heard over the explosions. “I love the show, and I always say I want to

see it live; I don’t want to just always watch it on TV,” said Cheryl McKenzie, 48. The Flatbush resident came to the park by herself around 4:30 p.m. to get a good spot. She saw the fireworks in the park a few years ago with her family, but the crowds left them reluctant to return, so she decided to enjoy the show on her own. “When I came with my family, it wasn’t a good experience for them, so they didn’t want to come back,” McKenzie said. For Miriam Tirado, it was an opportunity to show her 13-year-old son what real fireworks shows are made of. “My youngest son, he wants to see the real deal,” she said. “It’s more for him than really for me.”

Fort Hamilton hosts another fun-filled annual Fourth of July celebration BY JAIME DEJESUS JDEJESUS@BROOKLYNREPORTER. COM

The Fort Hamilton Army Base hosted its annual Independence Day celebration, which featured several genres of live music, vendors, food and, of course, fireworks, on July 3. The concert featured genres such as salsa, classic rock and R&B. Among the artists who performed were Raine Torae, Wild Night: An Evening of Bon Jovi and Sound House. The night was considered yet another success. “Thank you to all who supported this event,” Fort Hamilton MWR’s Facebook page read in a post. “Everyone enjoyed the music, vendors and fireworks. Excellent performance from Raine Torae,

PEARL DONCHAK DIED ON SUNDAY JULY 7, 2019, AT THE HOME OF HER DAUGHTER, DIANE, IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. SHE WAS 98 YEARS OLD. Pearl, the daughter of Wassil and Pearl (Falatovich) Chelak, was born August 14, 1920, in Park Place, PA, one of eleven children. She graduated from Mahanoy Township High School in 1938. Following the end of WWII, she married Peter Donchak of Frackville, PA, and settled in Brooklyn, NY. They raised four children together. Pearl worked as a sales associate for the Beechnut Company in Brooklyn, NY and later spent 20 years working at Abraham and Straus Co. (Macy’s) department store. Pearl was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for over sixty years. She enjoyed bowling with a league in Sunset Park and was a member of the Bay Ridge Center. Pearl was an avid cook and will be remembered for her traditional holiday meals. Although she spent many years in New York, Pearl always considered herself a “country girl from Pennsylvania”. Her fondest memories involved family celebrations surrounded by her loved ones. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband Peter Donchak on July 22, 2011. Surviving are two daughters Diane Donchak of Brooklyn, NY; Lisa Donchak of New York, NY; two sons Peter J. Eye on REAL ESTATE Celebrate Sunset Park landmarking with a summer stroll STELLAR ARCHITECTURE FOR WORKING-CLASS IMMIGRANTS OF YESTERYEAR By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

They used aristocratic architectural styles to create working-class housing stock. Three cheers for the developers of yesteryear who constructed beautiful, beautiful rowhouses in Sunset Park for waves of immigrants to live in.

Sunset Park’s new historic districts are full of rowhouses built by immigrants for immigrants. The builders deployed Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival design aesthetics — with some Queen Anne and neo-Grec flourishes thrown in for good measure — like you’d find in rich Brooklyn neighborhoods. But they made Sunset Park’s brownstone, limestone and brick rowhouses smaller and set them up as more economical two-family homes. Those builders from bygone days are on my mind because present-day Sunset Park residents finally won a long battle, led in recent years by the Sunset Park Landmarks Committee, to get those beautiful homes landmarked. Three decades of perseverance paid off when the city Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously voted last month to create four small historic districts in their neighborhood. Why not celebrate the grassroots activists’ victory by spending the day in Sunset Park and strolling around the newly landmarked areas?

A PICNIC IN THE PARK AND TEA TIME IN CHINATOWN Of course, when you’re done with your self-guided house tour, you’ll want to pick up lunch from one of the Mexican, Dominican or Peruvian restaurants on Fifth Avenue and have a picnic on the hilltop in the park that’s called Sunset Park. Later, there are a zillion places to have dinner in Sunset Park’s Chinatown on nearby Eighth Avenue. Or at the very least, you should have boba tea at Ten Ren, a highly regarded seller of Chinese tea and ginseng. By the way, the LPC’s creation of the Sunset Park historic districts means people can’t tear down buildings in them without the preservation agency’s permission. This gives the residents a measure of protection against the proliferation of finger buildings. You know what finger buildings are. You’ve seen them on non-landmarked low-rise blocks in numerous Brooklyn neighborhoods. These skinny, newly constructed mid-block edifices are considerably taller than the homes on either side of them. This makes the block look like a hand that’s flipping the bird.

THE SUNSET PARK SOUTH HISTORIC DISTRICT A good place to start a landmarked Sunset Park stroll is in the Sunset Park South Historic District at 59th Street and Fourth Avenue. There’s an N and R subway station on the corner and

the NYC Ferry’s Sunset Park dock is a few blocks away. Walk up and down each side street between Fourth and Fifth avenues from 59th through 54th streets. The corner buildings you’ll see are not part of the landmarked area. The historic district consists of more than 280 buildings constructed between 1892 and 1906. Nearly all of them are rowhouses that are two stories tall above basements. Just look at them. Such eye candy. On blocks including the even-numbered side of 58th Street and the odd-numbered side of 55th Street, the brownstones are chocolate, coffee and vanilla-colored, like ice cream. On the even-numbered side of 55th Street one rowhouse is the color of strawberry gelato. The LPC’s designation report about this district says many early residents of these blocks were immigrants from Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland. Some worked on the waterfront as ship brokers, ship carpenters and iron-foundry foremen. Some were skilled laborers in other types of businesses. Some did office work or owned small businesses. Later waves of immigrants turned the area into a Scandinavian-American stronghold. Houses in the Sunset Park South Historic District were constructed by speculative developers such as Charles and Alfred Hamilton, a pair of brothers who owned a barge and steamboat company before getting into the real estate business. Various architect-builders in the area were immigrants, such as William Hassan, who was born in Ireland. Another architect-

Celebrate Sunset Park landmarking with a summer stroll STELLAR ARCHITECTURE FOR WORKING-CLASS IMMIGRANTS OF YESTERYEAR — Continued from page 14INB — builder, Thomas Edwards, was the son of an Irish immigrant. As you stroll around these streets admiring the builders’ work, you’ll notice gardens and stoops lined with pots of flowers.

THE SUNSET PARK 50TH STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT A short walk away from the Sunset Park South Historic District, you’ll find the beautiful brownstones of the Sunset Park 50th Street Historic District, which is between Fourth and Fifth avenues. Once again, buildings on the corners of the two avenues are not part of the landmarked area. The 50 rowhouses in the 50th Street district — is there an echo in here? — were constructed between 1897 and 1899. LPC’s designation report about the Sunset Park 50th Street Historic District calls it “one of the neighborhood’s finest historic blocks.”

There was some drama during the development of this block. The Waldron Brothers, who were builders, constructed 10 houses and then went broke and fled to Canada, the designation report says. The Hamilton Brothers, whom I mentioned a moment ago, built the other 40 houses.

THE CENTRAL SUNSET PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT A few blocks away, 47th Street and 48th Street blocks between Fifth and Sixth avenues comprise the Central Sunset Park Historic District. A stretch of Sixth Avenue from 47th Street to nearly 49th Street is also part of the district. Neo-Gothic-style Iglesia Presbiteriana Sion, which is on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 48th Street, is the only house of worship in Sunset Park’s four historic districts. It was built in 1921 and was originally called the Park Presbyterian Church. The LPC’s designation report about this new historic district says Eastern European Jewish families and immigrants from Italy, Germany, England, Scandinavia and Syria were the early inhabitants of its 140-plus, two-story rowhouses and small multifamily buildings. They were constructed between 1897 and 1907. Later, Norwegians became the area’s biggest ethnic group. And there was a large group of Syrian residents, “with many involved in the importing and retailing of lace, linens, kimonos and rugs,” the designation report notes.

In 1908, Thomas Bennett designed a row of limestone houses with rounded bays and brownstone basements on 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. It’s a prime location — because the hilly recreation area that’s named Sunset Park is right across the street. These two-story homes are now part of the Sunset Park North Historic District. They’re dignified but not pretentious, beautiful but not intimidating the way really large limestone homes in rich people’s neighborhoods can be. The Sunset Park North Historic District also includes lowrise apartment buildings on the corners of Sixth Avenue. They were built between 1910 and 1914. These construction dates and lots of other helpful info can be found in a Landmarks Preservation Commission designation report. Brick rowhouses with flat facades on the 44th Street block between Sixth and Seventh avenues are also part of this historic district. Developer William Kay constructed them in 1903. In total, there are more than 50 buildings in the Sunset Park North Historic District.

OPINION A WONDERFUL CELEBRATION

he annual fireworks and Independence Day celebrations held at Fort Hamilton Army Garrison on the evening of July 3 were as usual spectacular. The event, which was open to members of the public who registered in advance, filled the base bluff — which overlooks the entrance to the Narrows in the shadow of the bridge — to capacity. There was live music, food to be purchased and fantastic weather. Around 8 p.m., two towed barges pulled maybe 150 yards off the shore. At 9:20 p.m., the half-an-hour-long fireworks show began and it was exceptional. As far back as I can remember, Fort Hamilton has shared its annual celebration with the community. When the base was under the command of the Capital District, the 1st Infantry

Regiment, which includes a highly trained ceremonial unit, performed a Military Tattoo each year. For the past eight or nine years, Fort Hamilton has been under a regional command headquartered at Fort Dix in New Jersey. Since then, fireworks have been the celebration of the day. If you have not been at the base for its Independence Day celebration, I recommend that next year you look for the announcement and make a reservation. Short of a rain-out, if you plan to be in town on the evening of July 3, this is a very enjoyable event. *** I was invited by the new New York State Republican Chairperson Nick Langworthy to attend his election as state chairperson this past week at the Albany Marriott. There was a big crowd,

a lot of press and a great deal of energy in the room. Nick, as usual, gave an impassioned speech calling for change through the election of Republicans (I might add, conservative Republicans) to statewide office. Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis was one of the keynote speakers and she hit it out of the park, making a strong case against the progressive actions of the New York legislature which are often mimicked in Congress. I congratulate him on his election and hope to be working closely with him in electing conservatives to state office. *** New York City, according to a well respected website, for the third year in a row ranked as one of America’s worst-run cities. It was not an indictment of city services as a stand-alone

I think we can all assume that the high cost of living in New York City will eventually become unsustainable. metric. It was a heavy criticism of the extraordinarily high cost of maintaining those services. On a number of occasions, I have noted the gigantic increase in the number of city employees. The bottom line is that the city is ranked 146th out of 150 cities when you divide the quality of services by the cost. That in turn translates into a criticism of the management of the city. I think we can all assume

oncentration camps are notorious for inhumane conditions. Dirty, malnourished children. Women whose hair is falling out. Detainees wearing soiled clothing for weeks. Outbreaks of flu, chickenpox, scabies. Lice infestations. These are accounts from camps near our southern border today. One hundred and fifty-five men held in a cell meant for 35, so crowded they can’t lie down to sleep. Young children caring for infants and toddlers. Twoyear-olds with no diapers, soiling themselves. Baby formula limited to three bottles per day. Kids sleeping on concrete floors with only a foil wrap. Twenty-five migrants have died in ICE custody under the current administration. Seven migrant children have died in custody the past year, after nearly a decade without such a death. Under a standard

dictionary definition, as a place where large numbers of a persecuted minority are imprisoned in a small area with inadequate facilities, these centers are concentration camps. That term has become somewhat synonymous with Nazi extermination camps, but if you’re parsing what to call these, rather than calling out what’s happening, you’re missing the point.

When we see that a new refugee tent city in Donna, Texas has ordered 2.24 million baby diapers, how can we not ask how many babies do they expect to detain and for how long? More cruel than the deplorable conditions are the child separations, still occurring a year after an executive order declared an end to the practice. This is all based on the president’s

zero tolerance policy, which disregards current law. Asylum seekers presenting at ports of entry are turned away, in violation of U.S. law, which was born out of the Geneva Convention. Undocumented migrants are treated as hardened criminals for illegally entering the country, which is a misdemeanor. Minors are being held in camps far longer than the 72-hour maximum established under federal law. It’s been firmly established that non-citizens are afforded the same rights when being processed by the courts and cannot be subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. And yet “cruel and unusual” seems to be the standard for migrants. Whether it be a U.S. attorney arguing in court that “safe and sanitary” requirements shouldn’t mean CBP has to provide children with soap or border patrol agents telling women and

We are currently seeing some of New York’s wealthiest citizens beginning to split their time between New York and another home out of state in a manner that allows them to avoid a great deal of local taxes. *** On July 11, the school zone speed cameras go into operation. What you should know that might surprise you is that the cameras are in effect Monday through Friday in the summer from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. You should also know that the new law sponsored by Senator Gounardes not only effectively made the cameras live all weekdays, all summer,

it also created a quarter-mile radius for enforcement around each school, whether it is open or closed. Due to the change which created a quarter of a mile radius, drivers should assume that just about all of Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights are in a school safety zone. In New York City, the camera enforcement begins at 11 miles over the speed limit which can vary but is usually 25 miles an hour. No one should speed. Frankly, our streets are too congested and it is highly dangerous to all. At the same time, I think there are several aspects of this law that were not understood at the time it was passed and which will be met by hostility in our community.

On July 1, as members of Congress finally toured border camps, an expose revealed a secret Facebook group of Border Patrol agents with 9,500 members — nearly half the number of active agents — with posts

that are racist and sexually violent, including jokes about migrant deaths. Having grave concern for where this is headed doesn’t mean one is making direct comparisons to the Holocaust. In America, we should oppose inhumane acts that fall well short of atrocities. When we hear that Fort Sill in Oklahoma will house unaccompanied children crossing the border, how can we not draw parallels to the fact our government interned Japanese Americans at the same location during World War II or that following the Trail of Tears, Native

Americans were forcefully relocated to that same area? When we know that Jewish refugees like the family of Anne Frank, who repeatedly sought asylum in the United States, were turned away and sent to their deaths, how can we abide policies that imperil so many refugees today? After delaying them two weeks prior, Donald Trump declared the day after the July Fourth holiday that ICE raids will be starting fairly soon. New York will be among the cities where migrants will be rounded up and sent, en masse, to camps. Will we need to consider hiding our neighbors in our attics? Will our next president’s first act in office be sending troops to liberate camps here in our own country?

Joey Chestnut wins Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, downing 71 dogs in 10 minutes

For the 12th time in 13 years, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut of San Jose, California, dominated the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest, wolfing down 71 hot dogs in 10 minutes, just three franks short of the world record he set at last year’s competition. Thousands of spectators gathered at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues Thursday to find out who would eat the most dogs and take home the Mustard Belt in 2019. The competition was broadcast live on ESPN. Chestnut’s closest rival was Darron Breeden, who ate 50 franks, which, while impressive, was still 21 dogs short of Chestnut’s total. Chestnut became the only contestant to eat 70 hot dogs in 2016, and he’s pulled off the feat every year since, eating 72 dogs in 2017, 74 in 2018 and 71 at this year’s contest. In the women’s competition, Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, Nevada, em erge d victorious for the sixth straight year, putting away 31 hot dogs in 10 minutes. In 2018, Sudo choked down 41 franks. Trailing just behind her this year was Michelle Lesco, who ate 27. oricua! A sudden storm didn’t put a damper on the 21st annual Boricua Festival, aka Salsa at the Waterfront, which organizers labeled another success. Held on Saturday, June 29 at Brooklyn Army Terminal’s Pier 4, the event attracted thousands of attendees who enjoyed food, games, dancing and more. “It was a great event,” said co-founder and President of the Boricua Festival Committee Pat Ruiz. “It was very well-attended. People were dancing, sitting on beach chairs. We had an excellent turnout of a variety of vendors who sold Spanish food, T-shirts, smoothies.” Performers included Piel Canela Dance School, Elvin Velazquez, DJ Benny Fuego, Jerry Hernandez Orquesta Dee Jay, Charan Salsa and Charlie Aponte. The weather didn’t cooperate during

the performances, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of

those that attended. “It was awesome,” wrote one attendee on Facebook. “People on the NYC Ferry saw us and they were yelling, ‘Boricua!’” Ruiz said. Ruiz also thanked NYU Langone for its participation. “They have supported us since day one when they

were Lutheran Medical Center back in 1998,” she said. “They provided a Gator, which is like a mini golf cart with EMS personnel. They were riding around the pier looking for anyone that required medical attention. They were fantastic and we’re very grateful for their participation.” The Dr. Antonia Pantoja Youth Leadership & Service Award was given to two

students, Raejean Burgos and Jasmine Ramirez, who, Ruiz said, “each received a $1,000 check from the Boricua Festival Committee and a crystal plaque along with a $500 gift card to Bed Bath and Beyond to help decorate their dorms.” Even though this year’s festival just happened, Ruiz and company are already thinking ahead. “We had a great time and

we can’t wait to do it again next year,” she said.
