Internet speeds pick up across city schools BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK

MEAGHAN @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

When eighth grader Ibrahim Amtiaz first joined the Code Squad two years ago — William McKinley Junior High School’s digital coding club — the building’s internet could barely keep up. “When I started on the Code Squad in sixth grade, our internet was really slow. It took a long time for our programs to load and fewer of my teachers used technology in the classroom because it took so long to set things up,” Amtiaz said. His school wasn’t alone. As of this school year, every New York City school building has gotten a broadband upgrade to at least 100 megabits per second, Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced Wed-

nesday from Amtiaz’s school auditorium in Bay Ridge. Just five years ago, Carranza said, not even 10 of the city’s 13,000-plus schools could say that. “We have high expectations for all of our students, and we want them to have the tools to be successful. Yet, at the start of this administration, technology wasn’t necessarily where we wanted it to be, the infrastructure wasn’t where it needed to be and it was not serving our students well,” said the schools chancellor. Councilmember Mark Treyger, a former educator who chairs the council’s Committee on Education, told the Home Reporter that slow speeds in school buildings isn’t an isolated issue. “Too many schools face issues with even accessing the internet due to structural issues,

including wiring problems and lack of internet bandwidth,” Treyger said Wednesday, adding that, in meeting with educators and parents, he’s learned that “a number of schools lacked the technological capacity to provide 21st century access to students.” Earlier this year, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer raised similar concerns. In February, she released a study that found that only eight of 78 sampled schools in her borough had Wi-Fi speeds fast enough to utilize basic cloud-based technologies like Google Drive. Futhermore, Brewer’s report found that 18 of the 78 campuses had a difference of at least five megabits per second (and five schools had differences closer to 30).  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

City Council votes to affirm Doctors’ Row Historic District The City Council voted Thursday to affirm the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s decision to designate the famous Bay Ridge street known as Doctors’ Row a historic district, a legislative act that marked the final piece of a campaign started by

proud residents of the block. The LPC voted unanimously in June to grant historic district status to Doctors’ Row, the block located on Bay Ridge Parkway between Fourth and Fifth avenues that has grabbed attention over the years for its handsome, largely intact early-20th century rowhouses. The City Council has the

authority to either affirm or overturn the LPC’s decision. The block earned the nickname Doctors’ Row due to the numerous doctors who kept their offices there over the years. The historic district designation means that the facades of the buildings will be protected and preserved, advocates said. The block is populated by 54 rowhouses constructed between 1906 and 1913. The houses were constructed in the Renaissance Revival style with some elements of the Colonial Revival style, according to LPC. The buildings are all two stories tall with a basement and are united by a continuous cornice line, which remarkably, has been retained by all of the houses. Councilmember Justin Brannan, who pushed for the Council to back the commission’s decision, said Doctors’ Row deserves special status. “Doctor’s Row has a special and ongoing place in Bay Ridge history. To residents and locals, the block was already a landmark. It was well past time that we as a city officially recognize that status,” said Brannan, a Democrat representing Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and parts of Bensonhurst.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

The streets of Dyker Heights are expected to be jammed with tourists this holiday season for the popular Christmas Lights Display, but if those visitors suddenly get the munchies while they’re looking at the decorations, they’ll be out of luck. The borough’s most famous resting place for the dead is getting injected with some new life: $500,000 in funding toward a new education and welcome center for the hundreds of thousands of visitors Green-Wood Cemetery rec-

eives annually. The money will cover classroom and workshop space, programming and community areas for the $34 million, 20,000-square-foot project, which is expected to break ground in fall 2021. The grant comes from Brooklyn Borough President (and mayoral hopeful) Eric Adams.

from a large section of Dyker Heights from Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Eve Day, the height of the Christmas lights display season. The idea behind the ban is to give a sense of relief to Dyker Heights residents who put up with traffic jams, noise and lots of litter during the holiday season, according to Councilmember Justin Brannan, the bill’s sponsor. “We hope this bill will allow tourists and residents alike to

enjoy the holiday season,” said Brannan, a Democrat representing Dyker Heights, Bay Ridge and parts of Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. The Council’s Consumer Affairs Committee, chaired by Councilmember Rafael Espinal Jr., approved the vendor ban bill on Wednesday, the day before the full Council took up the measure.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Bath Beach Park to get $5.6 million facelift BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

A popular local park is about to undergo a major renovation to the tune of $5.6 million. Bath Beach Park, a 2.96-acre recreation area nestled between Bay 14th and Bay 16th streets on Shore Parkway, will be getting a new entrance ramp, a new comfort station, an expanded children’s play area with

new sprinklers, adult fitness equipment and new fencing, according to officials at Community Board 11. No date has been announced for the start of construction. The project’s design is still being finalized, officials said. Board 11 members, who discussed the renovation plans at their Oct. 10 meeting, were generally pleased with the design, with one caveat. “The only issue we have

is that there are no bike racks,” District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia said. She planned to reach out to the city’s Parks Department about it. “We’re going to ask that they include in the design bike racks,” she said. Councilmember Justin Brannan, a Democrat whose district includes parts of Bath Beach, secured the funding for the renovation project in the city budget.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

The MTA says it will begin studying a plan to bring passenger trains back to the Bay Ridge Branch, a stretch of Long Island Railroad-owned, above-ground tracks between Bay Ridge and Queens that’s been moving only freight for the past 95 years. The branch runs from Fresh Pond Yards in Ridgewood, through East New York,

Flatbush, Midwood and Bensonhurst, then ends in Bay Ridge. The line carried passengers from its opening in 1876 until 1924. If the branch were to reopen to commuters, it would be the first step toward realizing the larger Triboro RX plan, a 24mile rail line first proposed in 1996 by urban research nonprofit the Regional Plan Association. The Triboro would loop around the city through a patchwork of existing

rail, which passenger trains would share with freight trains. The Triboro would carry passengers from Bay Ridge, through Brooklyn and Queens and up to Co-Op City in the Bronx. Along its route, it would cross paths with 17 existing subway lines and four LIRR and Metro-North commuter lines, giving passengers many more connection options.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Alum’s family gives $250k gift to Fontbonne BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The family of a deceased graduate has bestowed a $250,000 gift on Fontbonne Hall Academy, the largest endowment in the school’s 82-year history, school’s officials confirmed. The $250,000 gift from the Callaghan & Pierog Family Foundation will be used to renovate the school’s STEM lab and to create a

new science lab, according to Director of Development Joseph Geraci. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The donation was made in memory of Theresa Callaghan, a 1954 graduate of Fontbonne who is now deceased. One of the new labs will be named in her memory, Geraci said.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Six people nabbed for drug possession in Bay Ridge Cops say one suspect jumped from window trying to flee BY JAIME DEJESUS JDEJESUS @BROOKLYNREPORTER

Police arrested six people and charged them with drug possession, after raiding a Bay Ridge home. According to authorities, on Thursday, Oct. 17 at around 9:42 p.m., police officers went to the house on 74th Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues with a warrant. During the investigation, cops say, the officers on the scene observed that the suspects were in possession of controlled substances. One of the suspects, 43-yearold Jessica Davis, attempted to flee by jumping through a window. She fell and sustained injuries. According to the police, 51year-old Michael Kempf, 53-

year-old Paul Carson, 52-yearold Tony Grandelis, 43-yearold John Dubegallo and 37year-old Anthony Vittorio were each charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument, second degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia and seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Davis, who a witness said jumped from the second-floor window, was also charged with possession of a hypodermic instrument, second degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia and seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance as well as obstructing governmental administration in the second degree.    For the full police blottrr, see brooklynreporter.com.

Local pub hosts fifth annual ‘Hero’s Benefit’ BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

It’s all about our true American heroes and how they readjust to life after serving our country overseas. On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Wicked Monk at 9510 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge was the site of the fifth annual “Hero’s Benefit” to raise money this year for the Hope for the Warriors organization. Hope for the Warriors was founded in 2006 by military families at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Hero’s Benefit was started in 2012 by Bensonhurst native and Bay Ridge resident Gabrielle Puglia to bring people together while also raising funds

to support military veterans. Puglia previously told this paper that she was inspired to give back after an August, 2011 Chinook military helicopter crash killed 38 people — 25 American special operations personnel, five United States Army National Guard and Army Reserve crewmen, seven Afghan commandos and one Afghan interpreter — and one U.S. military working dog. Hope for the Warriors is run by combat veterans and military family members and offers three programs for veterans — transition services, clinical health and wellness and sports and recreation.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Military Entrance Processing Station, which processes applicants for all branches of the military and covers New York City, Long Island, Westchester County and parts of New Jersey. It’s the second largest military entrance processing station in the country, after Los Angeles. The anniversary celebration took place on Friday, Oct.

18 at the processing station, hosted by Lt. Col. Patricia Jones-Johnson, MEPS commander. It was a chance for soldiers, veterans and community members to pay tribute to all those who have entered the service through the MEPS during its 50 years at Fort Hamilton. Jones-Johnson welcomed all the returning soldiers who had passed through MEPS, the first step in creating soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines and members of the Coast Guard.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

U.S. Rep. Max Rose held a roundtable discussion with a group of senior citizens to discuss the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs and what the federal government can do to help older adults afford the life-saving medications they depend on. “We’ve been letting Big Pharma price gouge and rip off our seniors for far too long,” said Rose, who hosted the roundtable at his Brooklyn district office on Third Avenue on Oct. 18. NYPD Task Force investigating anti-Muslim crime at T.J. Maxx BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating a shocking anti-Muslim incident in an 86th Street clothing store on Saturday in which a woman shouted “Go back to your country!” at a hijab-wearing female and her husband, and then attempted to knock a cell phone out of the husband’s hand. The ugly scene unfolded inside T.J. Maxx at 502 86th St., at around 1 p.m., according to police. Mido Mourad, a 41-yearold Egyptian journalist living in New York, has stated in media interviews that he was shopping with his wife for winter clothes for their children and that both were standing at the store’s checkout counter when they were approached by a woman who shouted “Go back to your country!” The suspect

also cursed at the couple. Mourad walked out of the store to call 911. The suspect, who also left the store, threatened Mourad when she real-

ized he was filming her with his cell phone. “I’m going to f—- you up,” she told him as she attempted to knock the cell phone out of his hand.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

OPINION Clinton vs. Gabbard

s it possible that a fairly unknown Democratic member of Congress from Hawaii could have delivered a political near-death blow to Hillary Clinton? Hawaii’s Tulsi Gabbard is anything but a conservative or for that matter, in my view, a moderate. However, in this year’s crop of far-left Democratic presidential candidates, she seems almost reasonable by comparison. She may even have had a legitimate gripe that the media was not taking her seriously because she refused to fall into the trap of name-calling and hollow political charges that has become the hallmark of this presidential campaign. Of course, few would have ever given her charges a second thought and she like so many failed presidential candidates would have become a footnote to history. Then, along came Hillary

Clinton. Mrs. Clinton, by simply focusing attention on Congressmember Gabbard, would have given her a political boost. Leveling outlandish charges as being the choice of Russia through a third-party bid designed to help President Trump took Gabbard and the attention given to her campaign into the stratosphere. Gabbard, as a military reservist holding the rank of major who saw service twice in the Middle East, including a tour in Iraq a few years after 9/11, defies any attempt to paint her as a disloyal American susceptible to Russian influence. Additionally, her modulated approach to policy issues makes her appear more attractive to independent voters and blue dog Democrats then anyone in the Democratic field. Plus, she

is almost 35 years younger than any of the leading Democratic candidates. This all adds up to Mrs. Clinton’s rantings seeming off the wall. This was only exacerbated by Gabbard’s response which took Mrs. Clinton and her claims apart, leaving you with the sense that Gabbard was a victim of a great left-wing conspiracy. I suspect Mrs. Clinton knew she had gone too far inasmuch as she canceled most of her public schedule last weekend. Gabbard is a liberal in every sense of the word. All one needs to do is go to her website and it is all laid out for anyone to see. But, she is different, falling much more into the framework of traditional liberal Democrats who have run for president. I cannot imagine how she could become the nominee. Regardless, due at least in

In my opinion, most political observers will look at less polarizing Democrats such as Gabbard, at 38 years of age, as the future of the party if the Democrats hope to become the majority party in America. eginning on Saturday, October 26, for the first time in New York, you will be able to vote at a polling place before the first Tuesday in November. Early voting kicks off that day and runs for nine consecutive days, including the next two weekends. Depending on where you are in Southern Brooklyn, you may have an early voting polling site at a high school like Fort Hamilton, New Utrecht, FDR or James Madison or at the Coney Island YMCA. If you prefer, you can still vote on Election Day at your normal polling place. Being that this year has less buzz electorally, the 2019 election is the perfect time to begin early voting, which the new state legislature passed as one of its

first orders of business in January. You won’t find any of the biggest races on the ballot this year. Following the special election this past February, you will again have the opportunity to vote for public advocate. You may be like me and also have a choice of two candidates for civil court judge of Kings County, but there are two other judicial elections; in one race, a candidate is running unopposed, while the other instructs you to select five candidates from a list of five candidates. The five ballot proposals this year, covering a host of issues, may be the choices many voters find most interesting. These races are obviously very important to the candidates whose names are on the ballot, but to average

Mrs. Clinton, for her part, will take one more step off the Democratic stage. *** I very much enjoyed attending the street naming in honor of Joe and Flo Leopoldi at Fifth Avenue and Seventh Street. Joe, who passed away 30 years ago, and Flo, who passed last December, were both friends of mine and Brooklyn Conservative Party Chairperson Fran Vella-Marrone. Joe was an early member of the Brooklyn Conservative Party in Park Slope where he first owned and operated an ice cream parlor and then a hardware store that his sons continue to operate. Flo was Mike Long’s

assistant when he was in the City Council and a member of the Conservative Party’s state and county committees until her passing. It was great to see so many people, from relatives to friends, customers and neighbors, come out to celebrate their lives. They all adored Joe and Flo, and so did I. *** The New York Post reported last Saturday night that Ian Reilly Walsh has filed a $5.5 million defamation lawsuit against State Sen. Andrew Gournardes for “falsely accusing [Reilly] of being a member of the Proud Boys.” This suit should capture the interest of the city, state and even national media over the next few months.

voters, 2019 is just a slow election year. And most welcome that.

The results of 2016 moved many to do more than they had done before and we saw that newfound enthusiasm a year later in the 2017 election.

The results of 2016 moved many to do more than they had done before and we saw that newfound enthusiasm a year later in the 2017 election. Mayor, comptroller, public advocate, borough presidents and all City Council seats were on the ballot, with the latter category garnering a lot of interest and energy locally. People who often skipped

voting committed to getting to the polls. Many who would regularly vote but keep that between their family and friends, knocked on the doors of neighbors they had never met to tell them about a candidate they believed in. It occurred again in 2018, in local congressional and state legislature races, as well as elections for governor, lieutenant governor, and New York State attorney general. This is why, after two very busy years, many have welcomed this slow 2019 election cycle, which has felt like a chance for everyone to catch their collective breath before what promises to be a wild year ahead.

All of us are very aware of the looming presidential election, as well as the fact that all of the House reps, state senators and assemblymembers we elected in 2018 will be up for reelection in 2020. But, I don’t think many realize just how long it will be until we have another slow year like 2019. After we survive 2020, all city races will again be contested in 2021, but what most may not be aware of is that due to the redistricting that follows the Census, every 20 years councilmembers are elected to two-year terms. This will be the case in 2021, which means that after another even-numbered year with congressional and state legislature races in 2022, in addition to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand running

for reelection, 2023 will find all City Council offices up for grabs, once again for two-year terms. 2024 will bring another presidential election cycle, along with all the other races that occur in even-numbered years, as well as the election for Sen. Chuck Schumer’s seat. In 2025, mayor will be on the ballot again, along with borough presidents, all the other citywide offices, and City Council races for the third time in a five-year span. In fact, it won’t be until 2027 until there is another electoral year that is as quiet as 2019. Now is the time to finish recharging the battery in preparation for what will be a busy year ahead or, more precisely, a busy seven years ahead.

olice are looking for a man who smashed a pumpkin displayed outside a home in Bay Ridge. The 68th Precinct tweeted four photos of the suspect grabbing the pumpkin on 81st Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue and throwing it to the floor. “Does anyone recognize this tough guy pumpkin smasher,” the precinct tweeted. “This happened on 81st Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue #Brooklyn. If so please call 718-439-4220.” One of the victims took to Facebook to show the surveillance video; according to the victim, the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 and the pumpkin belonged to the victim’s threeyear-old granddaughter. The victim also shared an additional video taken approximately two weeks ago during the evening hours in which seemingly the same suspect smashed a pumpkin.

News From Your Neighborhood NEW FORT GREENE TOWER TO HOUSE MUSIC SCHOOL

FORT GREENE — Gotham Organization, a developer, and FX Collaborative, an architect, are planning to develop a 22-story residential tower that will also house the Brooklyn Music School, according to Curbed. The project would rise next to the school’s existing building at 126 St. Felix St. in Fort Greene. It will have a neo-Romanesque design with a pattern of vertical windows and light-colored brick and limestone. The enlarged music school facility will allow for additional and more diverse programming, Curbed said. The development will have 120 new residential units, about 36 of which will be allocated for moderate-income households. Gotham bought the empty lot for $5.5. million in 2015. 

OFFICIALS JOIN PUSH FOR BAY RIDGE HATE CRIME PROBE

BAY RIDGE — City Councilmember Justin Brannan (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bath Beach) and fellow Bay Ridge elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Max Rose, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus, have formally asked the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force to investigate Saturday’s incident at T.J. Maxx in Bay Ridge. As the Eagle reported, a Muslim couple in the store were verbally harassed and physically assaulted by a woman who told them to “go back to your country.” “Bay Ridge is a diverse community where residents of all different faiths, races, and backgrounds live together peacefully. When an incident like this goes unpunished, it threatens the very fabric of this community and makes our constituents feel less safe in their own neighborhood,” the officials said in a joint statement. Bay Ridge is home to one of the largest Arab and Muslim communities in the city. 

ROBBERY CREW HITS STORES IN B’KLYN NABES

BOROUGHWIDE — A group of robbers has stolen more than $75,000 in jewelry, cash and electronics in Brooklyn, according to the New York Post. The most recent heist occurred at NY Jewelry in Downtown Brooklyn on Oct. 19. Surveillance video shows one of the crew pointing a pistol at an employee while a second man keeps watch and the others steal jewelry. On Oct. 5, the bandits held up La Casa de Oro in Bushwick and stole $50,000 in jewelry and $4,000 in cash, the Post reported. They also robbed a Metro PCS store in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Sept. 23 and a T-Mobile store in East Flatbush on Sept. 27. In both robberies, they forced employees into the bathroom before carrying out their heists. Their first stick-up took place at Clean City Laundry on Bushwick Avenue on Sept. 19. 

AMITY STREET IS MOST EXPENSIVE STREET IN B’KLYN

COBBLE HILL — A street in Cobble Hill is the only one in the borough that got into the top 15 of PropertyClub’s list of the city’s 50 most expensive streets, according to Patch. The three-block long street, which has a median price of about $2.5 million, landed in 11th place on the list. The next-most expensive Brooklyn corridor was India Street in Greenpoint, at No. 31. The city’s top-ranked street, Central Park South, had a median sales price of $9.8 million. Home sales at one development, The Cobble Hill House at 78 Amity St., drove the price up, Patch said. The building is on the former Long Island College Hospital campus. 

FIVE-STORY BUILDING PLANNED FOR W’BURG

WILLIAMSBURG — Permits have been filed for a five-story residential building at 222 North 8th St. in Williamsburg, according to New York YIMBY. The location, between Driggs Avenue and Roebling Street, is one block from the L train’s Bedford Avenue subway station. W Square, the development arm of WSQ Global, is listed as the owner on the application, and Marat Mutlu is listed as the architect of record. The building will have five apartments, most likely condos, according to New York YIMBY. 

BROOKLYN SHOPPER SUES WHOLE FOODS OVER SOY MILK

EAST FLATBUSH — An East Flatbush shopper upset about the flavor of her soy milk has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Whole Foods, claiming that the company’s advertisements for its own brand of soy milk is misleading customers into thinking that only real vanilla is used, according to Patch. Brooklynite Walletta Burke is one of 27 people suing food makers across the country because of vanilla “food fraud.” Burke’s attorney, Spencer Sheehan, told Patch that everything from yogurt to cookies to ice cream is mislabeled as vanilla when manufacturers really are using a substitute for vanilla beans. The ingredients list for Whole Foods’ vanilla soy milk puts natural flavors above organic vanilla extract, Patch said.

Halloween brings many beloved traditions, like trick-or-treating, wild parties, upstate apple picking and entertaining friends with spooky stories. But objectively, the very best Halloween tradition is watching dogs prance around in costumes. For some of the best spots to do that, visit brooklyneagle.com. INBrooklyn photo by Liliana Bernal 

KURUCS APPEARS IN B’KLYN SUPREME COURT

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Brooklyn Nets forward Rodions Kurucs appeared in Brooklyn Supreme Court in connection with his domestic violence case on Monday, according to the New York Post. The NBA star arrived in court in a dark suit and was ordered back to work on Nov. 19. Kurucs is accused of assaulting his live-in girlfriend on June 27 in their Gowanus apartment. During the argument, the Latvian-born player allegedly grabbed a knife and threatened to kill himself, sources toward the Post. Kurucs’ girlfriend was not identified by name. 

TOUR CO. HOLDS LAUNCH EVENT IN DUMBO

DUMBO — Collette, a tour operator, unveiled its tours for next year at an event in DUMBO, drawing travel agents from the tri-state area, according to Travel Pulse. The company plans to offer 165 tours next year, including 20 new ones in places ranging from Portugal to Nashville to the Greek islands. Dan Sullivan, CEO, said the company had done launch events before but wanted to be more “hip” by locating in a neighborhood like DUMBO, Travel Pulse said. The company originated in 1918, giving tours in New England and Canada. 

MAN ROBBED IN BARBERSHOP CHAIR

WILLIAMSBURG — Police are investigating an incident in which a man was robbed at gunpoint last week while getting his hair cut in Williamsburg, according to NY1 News. Surveillance video captured the scene on Oct. 14 at the barbershop at 139 Maujer St. While the victim was in the barber’s chair, a man behind him pulled out a gun and demanded cash and valuables. The victim turned over a cellphone, a credit card and $350, NY1 News reported. No arrests had been made as of press time. 

STUDIO IN ONCE-UNWANTED HEIGHTS BLDG. SELLS FOR $499K

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — When the plain-looking co-op apartment building at 45 Grace Court was built in the mid-1960s, Brooklyn Heights preservationists unsuccessfully went to court to try and stop it. Now, however, a studio apartment there is selling for $499,000, according to Brownstoner. The unit has two sets of full-wall, built-in bookcases, a half-wall divider between the living room and sleeping area, a separate kitchen and a large walk-in closet. The kitchen has modern appliances, and the bathroom was recently renovated with tan tile walls.

EVICTION OF CANCER PATIENT POSTPONED UNTIL JANUARY

BROWNSVILLE — The city’s Housing Court has delayed an eviction against a cancer-stricken tenant at NYCHA’s Woodson Houses in Brownsville, according to Patch. The Legal Aid Society has urged NYCHA to stop attempting to evict Sanchez because he is too occupied caring for his elderly mother to take care of his eviction case. The tenant, William Sanchez, was never added to the official tenant list because his mother is too ill to go to the housing office and fill out the necessary forms, Patch reported. The court ruled that the eviction case be delayed until Jan. 28, but the Legal Aid Society wants the housing agency to drop the eviction case altogether. 

NEW COOKBOOK FOCUSES ON B’KLYN ITALIAN HERITAGE

BENSONHURST — Bensonhurst-born Daniel Paterna’s new cookbook, “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food and Family,” includes photos of the neighborhood and a family memoir alongside the recipes, according to the Brooklyn Reporter. Among the dishes Paterna spotlights are arancini, eggplant parmesan and torta dolce di ricotta, a cheesecake made with ricotta rather than cream cheese. The Feast of the Seven Fishes refers to a meal containing seven different seafood dishes that is customarily served on Christmas Eve. Paterna told the Home Reporter that when outsiders think of Italian American Brooklyn, they often think in stereotypes. Some people have asked him whether he knows anyone in the Mafia, while one co-worker, upon hearing his Brooklyn accent, suggested speech therapy. “I always felt we grew up in a very dignified house. My mother abhorred `The Sopranos,’” he said. 

MAN CRASHES INTO PARKED BUS AND DIES

EAST NEW YORK — A man who was arrested in August for crashing into a bus while driving a stolen Cadillac was killed Sunday night after he smashed his car into a garbage truck in East New York, according to the New York Post. Zachariah Johnson, 22, was speeding east on Cozine Avenue when he veered into the westbound lane and slammed into the parked garbage truck. A passerby pulled Johnson’s body out of his demolished Toyota Camry just as the car was beginning to catch fire, the Post said. He was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. In August, he was arrested and charged with grand larceny, reckless endangerment and possession of marijuana.

Marine Park hosts party in the pumpkin patch featuring costumes, crafts and climbing By Noah Singer INBrooklyn

“Costumes, games and fall fun! What more can you ask for?” said State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, when asked about the Marine Park 34th Halloween Fall Festival. His words rang true on Saturday afternoon when the festival drew nearly 3,000 participants who came to celebrate mid-fall and the Halloween season with their families. The festival is organized annually by the Marine Park Community Association along with the New York City Dept. of Parks & Recreation. At the festival’s “pumpkin patch,” kids chose small pumpkins to decorate at nearby tables. Other attractions included face painting, balloon animals, temporary tattoos and popcorn. The festival’s costume contest awarded ribbons and gift cards to kids for their creative attire. Among the winners were a tyke in a tiny chef outfit and another clad adorably as Super Mario. True to tradition, the City Parks Foundation’s popular CityParks PuppetMobile provided free marionette shows for attendees of all ages. For older kids and adults, the NYPD contributed to the festivities by bringing in a towering rock wall. “We were proud to co-sponsor this exciting event in partnership with the Marine Park Community Association. It was a fun-filled day for the community, and especially for the children,” said Marine Park Director Margot Perron. “It was truly a collaborative effort as the Marine Park Community Association, NYPD, our Urban Park Rangers and students from the local high school rallied together to bring crafts, a climbing wall, face painting, puppets and much more to this festival.” Paul Link of the Marine Park Community Association said that this was the first year that the event was held on the Fillmore Avenue side of the park, between Madison Place and Marine Parkway. The organizers plan to keep the festival in this location for future years. “The Marine Park Fall Festival is a valued local tradition and I am glad that members of my team could be there to join in the fun,” said Gounardes, who sent representatives to the event.

By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

You can walk from Boerum Hill to Brownsville on Bergen Street. What a fine stroll. There are pre-Civil War brick rowhouses, an industrial area that residents want to rezone, clusters of Romanesque Revival homes and elegant churches. You can walk this route in a single day if you aren’t an obsessive-photo taker. But I am, so I split the stroll into two successive days — and two separate stories. This is Part One. Bergen Street begins at Court Street. If you don’t live close enough to walk here, take the 2,3,4,5 or R subway to august, landmarked Brooklyn Borough Hall and stroll several blocks. Court Street is full of interesting shops — and movie theaters, which is a great thing since there aren’t as many of them in Brooklyn as old-school filmgoers would like. Be sure to come back another time and plan to stay a while. On the first block of the walk, you’ll see an eye-catching cluster of wood-frame rowhouses from 26 to 36 Bergen St. They are painted pastel colors, like Easter eggs. On the other side of the street, old brick houses alternate with new low-rise multi-family buildings.

Welcome to Bergen Street, where pre-Civil War rowhouses mingle with eye-catching institutional and commercial buildings. INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

Bergen Street begins here, at the corner of Court Street. Near the intersection of Smith Street, there are upscale stores such as eyeglasses seller Warby Parker (55 Bergen St.) on the ground floors of the residential buildings. When I got to Smith Street, I was tempted to make a detour and spend the whole day there, photographing the restaurants and bars and shops.

Wood-frame houses grace the first block of Bergen Street in Boerum Hill. Instead, I stopped at Van Leeuwen Ice Cream (81 Bergen St.) which is open at breakfast time, bless their hearts. Yeah, it was early in the day. But a signboard out front mentioned seasonal flavors like pumpkin cheesecake ice cream. If caffeine is your preferred fuel for a walk, Single Origin (85 Bergen St.) will make you a cup of coffee.

HUMPHREY BOGART WAS A DESCENDANT Since we’re focusing on Bergen Street, surely you want to know where its name comes from. The Bergens were one of Brooklyn’s prominent families in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The clan descended from a ship’s carpenter from Bergen, Norway named Hans Hansen Bergen, who came to Dutch-controlled New Amsterdam (which is present-day lower Manhattan) in the 1630s, Leonard Benardo and Jennifer Weiss’s book “Brooklyn By Name” says. Bergen married Sara Rapalje and they moved to an estate near the present-day Brooklyn Navy Yard, a posting on the Bowery Boys Podcast’s blog says. Rapalje was the first female child born to European parents in New Netherland (a Dutch colony stretching from Albany to Delaware). Rapalje remarried after Bergen died. Her second husband was named Teunis Gysbertsen Bogaert. Beloved actor Humphrey Bogart was one of their descendants, a posting on New Netherland Research Center says.

PRE-CIVIL WAR ROWHOUSES Several blocks of Bergen Street are located within the Boerum Hill Historic District, which was designated in 1973, or the Boerum Hill Historic District Extension, which was designated in 2018 thanks to the Boerum Hill Association’s persistent advocacy. The earliest rowhouses in these landmarked areas were constructed in the late 1840s and early 1850s. Many others were built in the 1860s and 1870s. On Bergen Street, the landmarked sections of Boerum Hill start soon after you cross Smith Street and end at the intersection of Nevins Street. One of my favorite spots on this part of the walk is the sevenhouse brick row from 106 to 118 Bergen St. A developer named Joseph C. Billin constructed the Italianate-style houses in 1867, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the Boerum Hill Historic District Extension says. The house in the middle of the row, 110 Bergen St., is painted a soft creamy color that makes the red-hued brick homes on either side look especially pretty. The beauty and tranquility of these blocks will soothe your brain a bit, which is helpful given all the vexations that come with living in America these days.

REAL ESTATE

HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS AND POTTED PLANTS Another eye-catching block starts at the corner of Hoyt Street, where a slim residential building at 133 Bergen St. was constructed around 1872. Next to it, there’s a row of brick houses with Italianate features from 135 to 163 Bergen St. A builder named John Monas constructed the homes between 1871 and 1873, the Boerum Hill Historic District’s designation report says. Lots of people have Halloween decorations on their stoops, which is fun to see. Though it’s October, lush foliage on the trees is mostly summer-time green. Flowers are still growing in some of the front gardens. Keep your eyes peeled for the potted plants with enormous leaves on the balconettes, stoop and front patio of 226 Bergen St. They’re fabulous. By the way, this house is part of a looong row of Italianatestyle brick homes constructed for Helen Martense in 1855, the Boerum Hill Historic District Extension’s designation report says. In the mid-19th century, the Martense family was one of the big landowners in what is now called Boerum Hill, along with the Hoyt, Nevins and Gerritsen families, the book “Brooklyn by Name” says.

THE HOUSE OF PAIN As you continue your Bergen Street stroll, you’ll pass the Veterinary Wellness Center of Boerum Hill, which is at 96 Third Ave. There are entrances on different sides of the building for cats and dogs. The vet’s website explains there are separate hospitals for felines and canines to help reduce the stress that pet patients experience during their treatment. When you get to busy Fourth Avenue, be sure to stop in the median strip for a look at Brooklyn’s best-known landmark, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. The 512-foot tower topped with a four-sided clock looms large though it’s several blocks away at 1 Hanson Place. The neo-Romanesque building was constructed between 1927 and 1929. Architecture firm Halsey, McCormack & Helmer designed it. These days, it’s a residential condo building — but you might remember it was called the House of Pain for many years because lots of dentists were tenants when it was an office building. After you cross Fourth Avenue, you’re in Park Slope for a couple blocks. The brownstones are beautiful on the block between Fourth and Fifth avenues. At the intersections of both these avenues, you get an eyeful of the some of the high-rise apartment buildings at Atlantic Yards. That’s what community leaders, elected officials and everybody else I’ve ever met calls the 22-acre mega-development despite its name change to Pacific Park several years ago. On the Bergen Street block between Fifth Avenue and Flatbush Avenue, you’ll find a row of shops with old-fashioned storefronts. Gorilla Coffee is one of the tenants (472 Bergen St.) if you’re still in need of caffeine.

Here’s the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Clocktower seen from the intersection of Bergen Street and Fourth Avenue. INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan Once you’re on the far side of the avenue, you’re in Prospect Heights. One of the first things you’ll see is the NYPD’s 78th Precinct Stationhouse, with its handsome, dignified exterior. It’s on a Bergen Street corner at 65 Sixth Ave. A couple blocks of Bergen Street are located within the Prospect Heights Historic District. Most of the rowhouses and apartment buildings in this landmarked area were constructed in the second half of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. Two of my favorite Bergen Street houses are in the historic district. Both of them have mansard roofs. They face each other on opposite corners of Carlton Avenue. The neo-Grec house at 560 Carlton Ave., which has a brick facade on Bergen Street and a brownstone facade on the avenue, was designed by architect Charles Werner and constructed around 1882, the Prospect Heights Historic District’s designation report says. Mary Skelly was the original owner. The mansard roof at 575 Carlton Ave. was probably added some time since the late 1980s, to what was originally an Italianate brownstone constructed between 1869 and 1880, the report notes. The side of the house that faces the avenue is resurfaced in black and the window surrounds are orange. BROWNSTONES, BIBIMBAP AND A BAKERY

A brownstone row on Bergen Street’s landmarked block between Carlton and Vanderbilt avenues has deep front lawns. The landmarked district’s boundary on Bergen Street is Vanderbilt Avenue. A four-story building that wraps around this corner and uses 638 Bergen St. as its address is especially eye-catching. It was MANSARD ROOFS IN PROSPECT HEIGHTS constructed around 1891. It has a three-story, barrel-shaped It will take you a couple minutes to cross mammoth Flatbush window bay above its front door. Daniel O’Connell designed the combination Romanesque Avenue — which by the way has lots of interesting restaurants Revival-Renaissance Revival property and was its first owner, and shops and deserves a return visit. the Prospect Heights Historic District’s designation report says. The brick and brownstone building looks like it could use a little TLC, but not to worry. Minor facade work and a gut rehab of the second, third and fourth floors are planned, city Buildings Department filings indicate. Cater-cornered to 638 Bergen St., there’s a trio of Italianate brick residential buildings with storefronts, namely 597-599-601 Vanderbilt Ave., that property owner John Doherty constructed around 1879. Chef Liz Kwon’s nouvelle Korean restaurant, which is called White Tiger, is located on the ground floor of 601 Vanderbilt Ave. Non-landmarked Prospect Heights extends for another couple blocks on Bergen Street. The neighborhood’s boundary is Washington Avenue. In a cluster of buildings at the corner of Washington Avenue, you’ll find a good spot for dessert at 740 Bergen St. It’s called the Bakery on Bergen. The shop got a makeover on an episode of the Bravo TV series “Get a Room with Carson & Thom.” This is as far as I’m walking Low-rise buildings at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Bergen Street frame a view today. Next week, I’ll tell you about of Atlantic Yards high-rises. the rest of my Bergen Street stroll.

ON OCT. 23, 1960, the Brooklyn Eagle reported, “Sen. Jack Kennedy returns this week to pivotal Brooklyn in an attempt to clinch enough votes in the borough to swing New York State over to his column in the Electoral College. He will make six speeches here in strategic spots. Riding high, after what Brooklyn Democrats called a ‘tremendous visit,’ the presidential contender from Massachusetts will deliver an address at the Eastern Parkway Arena Thursday night. Kennedy spoke to an estimated 30,000 persons on a quick swing through Brooklyn. Several times during the ride through the borough’s streets, he was almost pulled from the rear of his open convertible by well-wishers. In a new development, President [Dwight] Eisenhower announced yesterday that he and Vice President [Richard] Nixon would make major campaign speeches in New York Nov. 2. Nixon had previously canceled his single scheduled appearance in the boro. Kennedy, campaigning yesterday through Missouri and Kansas, called on Nixon to abide by Eisenhower’s code of ‘face to face’ settlement of differences by agreeing to a fifth ‘Great Debate.’ Vice President Nixon, on a campaign swing in Eastern Pennsylvania, broadened his attack on Kennedy on the Cuban issue.”  ON OCT. 23, 1962, the Eagle reported, “Washington (UPI) — President Kennedy last night clamped a Naval blockade on Cuba because Soviet intermediate range missiles and other arms had turned the island into an armed camp capable of hurling destruction into the heart of America. The blockade on shipment of offensive weapons to the Fidel Castro regime was part of a seven-step program ordered by the president to meet the ‘threat to hemispheric security’ posed by the Soviet arms buildup. The president said the Naval blockade would not deny Cubans the civilian necessities of life. The buildup, the president said in a nationwide radio and television report to the people, now includes medium range ballistic missiles capable of firing nuclear warheads for more than 1,000 miles … The United States, the president said, was asking for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council where this country will introduce a resolution calling for prompt dismantling and withdrawal of all offensive weapons in Cuba under U.N. supervision. The president said the offensive weapons would have to be removed before the quarantine could be lifted. He called on Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev ‘to halt and eliminate this clandestine, reckless and provocative threat to world peace and to stable relations between our two nations.’”  ON OCT. 24, 1945, Eagle sportswriter Tommy Holmes wrote, “The thing about the Jackie Robinson story today that strikes right out and hits you between the eyes is that the first Negro ever to be signed to a contract in organized baseball may be blocked from a bona-fide test by members of his own race. The Kansas City Monarchs, for whom Robinson played this summer, are preparing a formal protest to Commissioner Happy Chandler. They do not like the fact that our Mr. Branch Rickey signed their star ball player to a contract with the Montreal Royals, No. 1 farm club of the Dodgers. Whether the commissioner of baseball will deem it unfair practice to sign a player under contract to a club in an established Negro league remains to be seen. If he upholds the protest, it may be years before another opportunity opens up for a Negro in organized baseball again.”

“Feast of the Seven Fishes” blends memoir, recipes and neighborhood history BY ALEX WILLIAMSON

B

e n s o n h u r s t- b o r n home cook, photographer and graphic designer Daniel Paterna is dishing up more than mouthwatering recipes in his new cookbook, “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family.” Through lovingly rendered photographs, readers also get a taste of the neighborhood’s little Italian bakeries, butcher shops and corner stores, alongside a highly personal family memoir. The Bensonhurst backdrop gives rich context to recipes for dishes like arancini, eggplant parmesan and Paterna’s favorite, torta dolce di ricotta, a traditional Italian cheesecake made with ricotta instead of cream cheese. “I think anyone that has it is kind of over the moon,” said Paterna. “You can’t not like it.” Paterna began to think about the food and the culture of Bensonhurst as something to be preserved after a few years away in Boston in the ‘90s. When he went home, he wanted to document his family’s Italian traditions like the Feast of the Seven Fishes, a meal with seven different seafood dishes customarily

served on Christmas Eve. “When I would go home for holidays, I started to document and photograph my mom cooking,” Paterna said. “During that time, I would reflect on, wow, this is a very unique thing that we do every year.” Paterna also started visiting Bensonhurst’s “negozi,” or little Italian shops, many of which have been run by the same families for generations, to photograph and interview the proprietors. Nearly eight years later, those efforts are compiled in “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” out from PowerHouse Books Nov. 5. The book Photos courtesy of Daniel Paterna is filled with authentic recipes, interviews, family Queen Ann Ravioli snapshots and stunning on 18th Ave. original photographs by Paterna, almost entirely and settled in Red Hook around 1915, right at the shot on Kodak 400 ASA. “I was committed to shoot tail end of a massive wave everything on film,” Paterof immigration that brought na said. “I felt that roughly two million Italian the work I was immigrants presenting to the city. and the Like maconcepts, the emony of the grandtions I children was evokof those ing were i m m i all taking place in the grants, who came mostly film era.” from southern Pater n a’s Cheese from g ra nd fat her Lioni Latticini on Italy, Paterna grew up in lef t Naples 15th Avenue.

for the book that Paterna had from the outset was to portray Bensonhurst’s “B-Side,” the side of the middle class, Italian-American neighborhood that defies stereotypes. Outside of Brooklyn, Paterna says he encountered those stereotypes often. People would ask if he knew anybody in the Mafia. Coworkers found his Brooklyn accent intimidating, and one even suggested speech therapy. “I always felt like we grew up in a very dignified house,” said Paterna. “My mother abhorred ‘The Sopranos.’ There’s no identification, no glorification in that. And I think that’s because it was all too real for us… you step out in the street, you could run numbers or be part of an organized crime outfit very easily, so for us it was taken seriously.” Paterna’s mother, who died in 2013, sang in the choir at church and was a seamstress and a bank teller. She spoke Italian and would help new immigrants to set up bank accounts, apply for mortgages and, in general, establish themselves in the neighborhood. Her reputation in the community helped Paterna

as he was visiting shops in Bensonhurst to photograph and interview the sometimes-reluctant owners. It also came in handy after he finished the book. Hoping for a positive blurb, he mailed an advance copy to Michael Lomonaco, the former Food Network host and chef at Windows on the World. Unbeknownst to Paterna, before Lomonaco was a wellknown chef, he had worked at a bank with Paterna’s mother. “He said, ‘Had I not seen the word ‘Paterna’ on that FedEx, I would have never opened it,’” Paterna said. “I really feel like my mom had a direct hand.” Lomonaco read the book and wrote a glowing preface. In part, he wrote, “This deeply personal book is meant to move you, to help you understand the story of one family, and to see that so many other families lived much like this.” Paterna says the book is a way to preserve not just his own family’s traditions, but the traditions of a changing neighborhood. “Me photographing these stores and the area was sort of like a way to hold onto what’s left,” Paterna said. “I think that’s what people are reacting to when they see the book.”

12• EAGLE NEWS MEDIA— A SECTION OF HOME REPORTER AND BROOKLYN SPECTATOR • Week of October 25 – October 31, 2019

It has never been harder to be a New York City police officer. NYPD morale is at an all-time low. Politicians and police brass have abandoned the cops in your neighborhood.

But it could get even worse…

An NYC Charter Revision Proposal on your ballot this November would radically expand the power & jurisdiction of the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

CCRB is a failed institution: 98% of complaints result in no finding of misconduct against the police officer, but every complaint hurts that officer’s career.

We protect your family every day. Now more than ever, we need your support.
