The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has revealed its plans for an extensive community engagement process, launching a new website focused on proposals for the Brooklyn Queens Connector (BQX) on Thursday, Jan. 9. Led by the EDC and New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), the city team will use the site to provide new

information and seek opinions from community members on the $2 billion-plus streetcar proposal that would connect a dozen neighborhoods along an 11-mile corridor from Red Hook to Astoria. The BQX as currently proposed would connect 13 subway lines, over 30 bus routes, nine NYC Ferry landings, over 100 Citi Bike stations and 400,000 people that reside along the route, according to EDC. According to the EDC, the city team will offer briefings with elected officials, communi-

ty board presentations, email blasts, webinars, on-the-ground outreach, public workshops and environmental review scoping hearings. The team will make a minimum of five Community Board (CB) presentations in Brooklyn and Queens, including at CB 2 and CB 6 in Brooklyn, to explain the current plan for engagement and environmental review, as well as to go over details in the Conceptual Design Report. They will also conduct five community workshops to reach community stakehold-

Board 11 to bring in experts Hot Bay Ridge for traffic study at Ceasar’s Bay real estate market BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

A heavily trafficked section of the neighborhood is going to become even busier this year and Community Board 11 officials are taking steps to

mitigate any potential problems that may come up. Board 11 voted at its monthly meeting on Jan. 9 to approve a plan suggested by District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia to commission a traffic study of four key inter-

sections located within the Ceasar’s Bay Shopping Center located on Bay Parkway at Shore Parkway. The vote was unanimous. The community board is going to hire an engineering firm to conduct a traffic study

of the following intersections: Shore Parkway and Bay Parkway; Cropsey Avenue and Bay Parkway; Cropsey Avenue and 23rd Avenue; and Shore Parkway and 26th Avenue. The study will be funded by $30,000 secured by the City Council. The Council set aside $30,000 for each of the city’s 59 community boards in the Fiscal Year 2020 city budget. Commercial and residential developments coming to the area are part of the reason the community board is eager for a traffic study, Elias-Pavia said. Target, the nationwide chain of department stores, is planning to open a two-story, 90,000-square-foot store at the former Kohl’s department store site at Ceasar’s Bay in July. The opening of Target is likely to cause thousands more shoppers to flock to the mall, local officials said. The 14,000-acre Ceasar’s Bay property is located next to the Belt Parkway’s Bay Parkway exit.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

gets even hotter

Plans call for eight-story buildings on Third Avenue

BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The far western corner of Bay Ridge is about to undergo a major change, the latest indication that the neighborhood’s hot real estate market is getting hotter by the minute. Plans for two separate construction projects to be built on the same Third Avenue block have been filed with the New York City Department of Buildings. A developer plans to demolish three one-family homes at 9952, 9956 and 9960 Third Ave. and construct an eight-story residential building at that site. Separately, the owner of a one-family home at

9964 Third Ave., a dwelling located next door to 9960 Third Ave., has filed paperwork with DOB to build an eight-story residential dwelling on his property. DOB has not yet given approval for either of these two projects, said Abigail Kunitz, deputy press secretary for the agency. But if the projects eventually get the go-ahead from DOB, it would mean that four one-family homes on a single block are going to be torn down. New York YIMBY was the first to report on the plans for the two new buildings.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

MTA to take steps before adjusting pay system BY PAULA KATINAS

Drivers who cheered when Congress approved a measure last month to reinstate twoway tolls on the VerrazzanoNarrows Bridge might want to save their applause. It’s not going to happen for a while. There are steps that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has to take before a two-way toll system is put in, officials said. The MTA oversees bridges and tunnels in New York City. For one thing, while Congress has approved the measure and President Trump has signed it into law, the MTA

hasn’t approved it yet. That is expected to happen but there is no timetable, officials said. In addition, the MTA will have to make adjustments to the bridge’s toll plaza before drivers can expect two-way tolling. “We must follow a process that includes, but is not limited to, seeking MTA board approval for implementation, as well as structural changes to the facility,” Meredith Daniels, an MTA spokesperson, told the Home Reporter. “We are in the early stages of this process,” Daniels added.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Brooklyn GOP Party unanimously endorses Malliotakis for Congress BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

Five-term Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis has her party solidly behind her in her bid to unseat first-term U.S. Rep. Max Rose. Malliotakis, the last standing Republican lawmaker in Brooklyn, whose 64th Assembly District includes portions of Staten Island and Bay Ridge, received a unanimous endorsement from the Brooklyn GOP Party Executive Committee and its Chair Ted Ghorra on Thursday, Jan. 9. “Nicole Malliotakis is the daughter of immigrants and understands the American Dream because she’s lived it,” said Ghorra. “She’s a seasoned campaigner and fundraiser who has the skills and the resources needed to win this race.”

Democratic presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg has picked up his first congressional endorsement, courtesy of U.S. Rep. Max Rose, who announced on Monday that he’s backing the former New York City mayor in his run for the White House. Rose, a Democrat representing several neighborhoods in Southwest Brooklyn and all of Staten Island, said Bloomberg’s ability to get New York City back on its feet after the devastating Sept. 11 terrorist attack is a key reason for his endorsement. “The city Mike Bloomberg inherited in

2002 was reeling from the worst terrorist attack in American history and facing economic recession. There were real fears nothing would ever feel or be the same again. Mike Bloomberg took the reins, brought New York City back to life and put us on track to lead in the 21st century,” Rose said in his endorsement statement. Rose, who was elected to the House in 2018, has sought to paint himself as a moderate Democrat willing to work with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to get things done. He sees Bloomberg as a kindred spirit in that regard.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

“One bite. Everybody knows the rules.” Two Bay Ridge pie havens, Elegante Pizzeria and Gino’s, recently got their 10 minutes of fame on popular sports and pop culture blog Barstool Sports’ fan-favorite segment, Pizza Reviews, in which Barstool’s founder David Portnoy — who has visited hundreds of pizza joints over the past few years, from upscale establishments in Manhattan to chains such as Little Caesar’s and Costco — assessed the local favorites. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Portnoy, who rates each slice he samples on a scale of 1-10, posted his review of famous local Bay Ridge spot Elegante Pizzeria, 6922 Fifth Ave., after a viewer kept suggesting he try it. “A guy hit me up on this place,” he said as he walked

out of Elegante with a pie. “He’s like Elegante. DM after DM. ‘Hey, wake up you jerk. Go to Elegante. How many times do I have to tell you about this place?’ No frills. He’s like, go to this place.” Portnoy, who is known to be a tough grader, acknowledged that the place appears old school, referencing the vintage cash register and lettering. “I have high hopes,” he said. “It’s a very basic football-looking pizza. It’s a big pie. Let’s see what we got.” After taking a bite and pondering the taste, he said, “A little greasy. It’s good pizza.” He then gave the Elegante slice a score of 7.4. Nonetheless, “Is it worth that guy calling me [expletives] because it’s that good?” he mused, adding, ”I don’t think so.”  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Census concerns lead Board 11 leader to take action Bill Guarinello mounts grassroots effort to prevent an undercount BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

As the U.S. Census gets closer, concerns are mounting among Southwest Brooklyn officials over the possibility that its citizens will be undercounted in the big national tally that will determine the number of seats New York will have in the House of Representatives as well as the distribution of millions of dollars in federal funding. In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of Census 2020, Community Board 11 Chairperson Bill Guarinello announced at the board’s monthly meeting on Jan. 9 that he has established an ad hoc Census Committee and has appointed board mem-

Their task will be to come up with ways to convince local residents, many of whom have been reluctant in the past to disclose personal information to the government, to fill out their Census forms. “We want to make sure we not are not undercounted,” Guarinello told board members at the meeting. Upcoming repairs and renovations are planned for local parks, playgrounds across southwest Brooklyn BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

It looks like the perfect time to take a walk in the park. With a slew of improvements coming to parks across southwest Brooklyn, City Councilmember Justin Brannan and Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Marty Maher met on Monday, Jan. 13 to discuss projects taking place in local parks and playgrounds in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Gravesend, Bensonhurst and Bath Beach. “My constituents work hard and pay plenty of taxes — they deserve a solid return on their investment. Making sure my district has world class parks, playgrounds, courts and fields is one of my top priorities as a local elected official,” noted Brannan, who added, “And we are just getting started.” According to Brannan, construction will soon begin on the basketball and tennis courts at the Fort Hamilton Field at Colonial Road and 83rd Street. The project includes the reconstruction of two full-court basketball courts, with three-tier bleachers, bottle-filler drinking

fountain, drainage and landscaping. The two full-court tennis courts will be completely reconstructed with drainage, paving, windscreen and fencing. The construction will begin in fall 2020 and end in fall 2021. This follows the full reconstruction of the synthetic turf track and field at Fort Hamilton along with water fountains by the School Construction Authority in August 2019. In addition, the building in Shore Road Park at 95th Street, which has been under construction since last spring, is scheduled to be completed by fall 2020. Additionally, work on a new Shore Road Park dog run at 100th Street is scheduled to begin in fall 2020 and be completed by fall 2022. And the 97th and Shore Road Park loop path will be repaved and restored so it makes a full lap around the entire park again, with a projected 2021 completion date. Further down the line is the proposed complete renovation of the Shore Road Park Vinland Playground at Shore Road and 94th Street. This all follows the completion in June 2019 of the long-awaited ramp in Shore

Road Park at 97th Street, a project that took over two years to finish. In addition, the tennis courts and parking lot at John J. Carty Park on Fort Hamilton Parkway between 94th and 101st streets will be reconstructed this year, with a garden added to the oasis; plus there will be a complete renovation of the adjacent playground between 94th and 99th streets. Across the Gowanus, the asphalt field in Dyker Beach

Park will undergo a complete reconstruction beginning in fall 2020. Further south, construction has already begun on a new comfort station at the Gravesend Calvert Vaux Park that includes new bathrooms, athletic league storage and a park headquarters. The projected completion date is spring 2021. In Bensonhurst Park, a completely reconstructed playground with an adjacent path and sitting areas is scheduled to

be completed by fall 2020. Other upcoming projects include a resurfacing of the Shore Road Parkway bike path between the Verrazzano Bridge and Ceasar’s Bay that’s scheduled to begin this spring. A complete reconstruction of the playground in Owl’s Head Park at Fourth Avenue and Shore Road is awaiting confirmation of funding. Additionally, there’s a $5.6 million renovation of Bath Beach Park at Bay 16th Street and

Shore Parkway in the pipeline; that project includes paths, a sitting area, a flagpole, drainage, benches, café seating, lighting and landscaping. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2021 with an estimated completion date of spring 2022. “From day one, I have been focused on increasing access to parks and investing in the future of these great, open spaces,” Brannan said. “They really are the soul of our crazy, busy and crowded city.”

CONEY ISLAND — A man who had been stabbed several times as a result of a “love triangle” apparently tried to flag down passing cars before he eventually collapsed and died on a Coney Island street early Sunday morning, according to amNewYork. None of the drivers stopped to help the dying man, police said. James Santiago, 42, of the Bronx, was with a married woman at her home on West 15th Street when her husband reportedly walked in on them. The husband then stabbed Santiago several times in the torso, amNewYork reported. Officials say they are holding the wife as a person of interest for allegedly helping to drag the wounded man into the street when he was completely naked and then abandoning him. 

IMAGINING DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN WITHOUT BQE

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — An op-ed in Streetsblog by Brooklyn-based urban designer Michael King criticizes current plans to rebuild the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to accommodate repairs to its cantilevered section in Brooklyn Heights. He pointed out that some of the land beneath the BQE could be reclaimed for shopping, offices, housing and parkland. Without the highway, he said, neighborhood streets that once existed in longer versions, such as York and Duffield streets, could be rebuilt. Furthermore, he said, the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge, without the ramps to the BQE, could be rebuilt as a giant plaza. Rather than creating traffic jams, he believes, the removal of the highway would deter traffic in general. 

Beat the winter blues with a stroll in landmarked Brooklyn Heights Do you know the way to Love Lane? By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Hey. All of you who are fighting the January doldrums and wishing Valentine’s Day would get here to cheer you up. Did you know that Love Lane is a real street? It’s in the middle of Brooklyn Heights, in the oldest historic district in all of New York City. What a fine place to take a loved one for a stroll. So yeah, there’s a CVS at the entrance to Love Lane as opposed to some romantic, candle-lit cafe where you can sip champagne together. But the drugstore is situated in a sweet little brick house with shutters on the windows. And Love Lane leads to College Place, which is one of the prettiest streets in Brooklyn Heights. That’s saying a lot in a neighborhood full of landmarked homes built before the Civil War. Do you know the way to Love Lane? Let me show you. It’s part of today’s stroll through the north side of Brooklyn Heights. I promise we’ll walk around the rest of the neighborhood on another occasion. To get to Brooklyn Heights, you can take the 2, 3, 4, 5 or R train to the Borough Hall stop or the A or C train to the High Street/Brooklyn Bridge/Cadman Plaza East stop. You’ll wind up on the corner of Court and Montague streets, or a couple blocks away, depending on which train line you take.

A walk around landmarked Brooklyn Heights should help you beat the winter blues. This lovely street is College Place. Below: Beautiful brownstones line this block of Pierrepont Street. INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

Just like Romeo and Juliet When you walk down Montague Street, one of the most eyecatching things you’ll see is a pair of century-old bank branches on the corner of Clinton Street. Both of them are city-designated landmarks. Both were constructed in an era when bank designs were invariably grand and regal. One is meant to look like a palace and the other a temple. Architecture firm York & Sawyer designed the Brooklyn Trust Company Building, which is directly on the corner at 177 Montague St. It is now a Chase Bank branch. It’s modeled on a palazzo in Verona, which is of course Romeo and Juliet’s hometown while we’re on the subject of Valentine’s Day and Love Lane. You must take a minute to step inside the neo-Italian Renaissance-style bank. This gives you a reason to stand on its front steps and get a close look at the Instagram-worthy lampposts on either side of the entrance door. The bases of the lamps feature big winged lions and little tortoises.

Then when you step inside, you will find a landmarked interior, which is a rare thing in Brooklyn. This banking hall has a vaulted ceiling, super-dramatic chandeliers, vast arched windows and an elaborately patterned mosaic floor.

Herman Behr House The second bank property, whose address is 181-183 Montague St., is the People’s Trust Company Building. It looks like a Classical temple, with a row of columns outside the front entrance and above them, a triangular pediment with fabulous sculptural figures. Architecture firm Mowbray & Uffinger designed the neoClassical building, which was constructed from 1903 to 1906. It is now a Citibank branch. From here on out, most of the neighborhood falls within the boundaries of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District. Entire blocks are landmarked. Turn up Clinton Street to the corner of Pierrepont Street, and you’ll find one of Brooklyn Heights’ most dramatic buildings. The Brooklyn Historical Society, designed by architect George Browne Post, was constructed in 1881. The Queen Anne-style brick building’s facade is decorated with terra-cotta busts of famous folk including Shakespeare and Beethoven. Turn left on Pierrepont Street, which has stately brownstones. There’s an eye-catching Beaux-Arts apartment house at the intersection of Henry Street. Kitty-corner from this apartment house, whose address is 161 Henry St., you’ll find Herman Behr House. This Romanesque Revival mansion’s address is 82 Pierrepont St. Frank Freeman was the architect. It’s currently used as an apartment building. Over the decades, it has by turns been a hotel, and belonged to a monastery, and reportedly housed a brothel.

Picturesque College Place Head up Henry Street. And in short order, you’ll be at the entrance to Love Lane. Cupid’s favorite Brooklyn street is one block long. In the middle of it, you turn right onto scenic cul-de-sac College Place. One side of College Place is lined with painted brick carriage houses with arched garage doors and shutters on the windows. Head back out onto Love Lane, which exits onto Hicks Street. The brownstones on Hicks Street are really something. If you’re in the mood to look closely at architectural details, there are Tudor-style doorways on side-by-side homes 131 and 135 Hicks St., Clay Lancaster’s “Old Brooklyn Heights: New York’s First Suburb” says.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES WITH A STROLL IN LANDMARKED BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Continued from page 2 INB — By the way, this is the book version of building-by-building historical research that Lancaster did, which neighborhood residents used in their successful efforts to get the city to create the Brooklyn Heights Historic District in 1965. If you need caffeine as you head up Hicks Street, you’ll find Joe Coffee Company in the storefront of a beautiful apartment building on the corner of Pineapple Street. Right next door to the apartment building, a lovely carriage house at 31 Pineapple St. is sure to catch your eye.

Let it rain In 2014, when Steven Spielberg was filming “Bridge of Spies,” he temporarily turned the storefront where the coffee shop is now located into a 1950s dress shop. As a crowd of Brooklyn Heights residents watched, Spielberg

used an enormous machine to pour simulated rain on this intersection — and actor Tom Hanks. Further up Hicks Street, take a quick detour onto Orange Street to see Plymouth Church, which was founded in 1847. Eminent abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher was the preacher there. His statue is on the church lawn. When you’re back on Hicks Street, keep walking. On the corner of Cranberry Street you’ll find a beautiful house constructed in 1829. The corner storefront is home to Jack the Horse Tavern, whose address is 66 Hicks St. Beloved wood-frame houses are sprinkled here and there on these blocks on the north end of Brooklyn Heights. Turn left on Middagh Street, and you’ll find them on both sides of the road as you head towards the corner of Willow Street.

Cher’s ‘Moonstruck’ house On that corner, you’ll find 24 Middagh St. This Federalstyle gray clapboard home has crimson-colored window shutters and a backyard with a carriage house. This eye-catching abode is nicknamed “the Queen of Brooklyn Heights Houses.” Accounts of its age differ. Some people think it has been around since 1790. Lancaster’s book says it was constructed in 1829. When you face the opposite direction on this Middagh Street corner, you’re overlooking the BQE. And beyond the highway, you see the top floors of Panorama, the office complex at 25 Columbia Heights that was formerly the world headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Remember the movie “Moonstruck,” which won Cher an Oscar for Best Actress? Her house in the film is on another Willow Street corner, at 19 Cranberry St. The brick house has a small plaque on the front of it that gives the year of its construction as 1833.

The unpainted brick, which is what you now see, is red. Continue down Willow Street. You’ll soon pass a fabulous 1920s hotel that was called The Towers. The toppaid Brooklyn Dodgers stayed there back when they were our borough’s baseball team. The property, whose address is 21 Clark St., later belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses. It’s now being turned into a rental building

for seniors called The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, with a mix of independent-living units, assisted-living units and memory-care units for residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The Promenade’s epic views Further down Willow Street, there’s a home where playwright Arthur Miller lived. The Federal-style rowhouse at 155 Willow St. was constructed in the 1820s. At the corner of Pierrepont Street, turn right. In just a minute, you’ll reach an entrance to the Promenade. The fate of the landmarked walkway hangs in limbo while a panel studies ways to repair the BQE beneath it. My colleague Mary Frost is keeping

everybody up to speed on this complex topic. For a moment, set the subject of the BQE aside and simply take in the views that the famous esplanade offers. There’s the World Trade Center with other Lower Manhattan skyscrapers. In the near distance, a new grass berm is taking shape at Brooklyn Bridge Park. To the north, the Brooklyn Bridge stretches across the East River. On the Promenade’s inland side, the backs of Columbia Heights brownstones brighten up the scenery. If you’ve taken your walk late enough in the afternoon, you’ll be right on time to see the sunset, which is always a thing of beauty. If it’s too early, you could go get a bite to eat on Montague Street.

Truman Capote lived on Willow St. Literature lovers appreciate Willow Street because Truman Capote lived on it when he worked on “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood.” The house at 70 Willow St., where the author lived in a basement apartment from 1955 to 1965, belonged to Broadway set designer and American Ballet Theatre codirector Oliver Smith. Visitor guides like the one on NYC & Company’s website say the Greek Revivalstyle house’s facade is yellow. But when the current owners renovated it a few years ago, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission gave them permission to remove the paint from the facade. of January 16, • INBROOKLYN — A Special Section of Brooklyn Eagle/HeightsPress/Home Press/HomeReporter/Brooklyn Reporter/BrooklynSpectator/Brooklyn Spectator/BrooklynRecord/Greenpoint Record/Greenpoint Gazette Gazette • 3INB January 16 – January 22, 2020 Week • INBROOKLYN — A2020 Special Section of Brooklyn Daily Eagle/Brooklyn Eagle/Heights

Want to hunt dinosaurs without leaving Brooklyn? In Gowanus, you can At Gotham Archery in Gowanus, archers can brush up on their hunting skills or just aim at foam animal targets for fun when the winter weather keeps them inside. Each animal (right) is given a different point amount. At the end of the night, the shooters tally their point totals and are added to a leader board.

The face of concentration that comes with preparing to let loose an arrow. By Paul Frangipane Brooklyneagle.com

A raccoon stands atop a trash mound, surrounded by rats. A black widow hangs feet away from a turkey, and a ram shares a perch with a Tyrannosaurus rex. An arrow whizzes through the air and pierces the abdomen of a foam deer, which shakes back and forth before it regains its footing on a wooden stand. This isn’t a hunting ground — it’s a Gowanus archery studio, which transforms into a faux hunting range on the first Saturday of every month. With a relatively short hunting season in New York, bow hunters take to events like Gotham Archery’s 3D Hunt to brush up on their skills alongside archers who are just shooting to switch up the monotony of aiming at paper targets. “It’s much, much more difficult than shooting in one distance,” said Oleg Vykrest, who started shooting three years ago with his now 12-year-old son, as a way to focus his son’s weakening vision.

In Gotham’s main room, archers stand in a line in front of a field of more than 30 animal targets, each with different point values. Some shoot at 3D targets from stepladders, while others sit down in fake shrubbery and aim at others. At the end of the night, they tally up their point totals to be added to a leader board. Three-D archery is typically shot outdoors and is a national tournament, said Gotham manager Pat Carroll, but in Brooklyn, it’s easier to find opportunities to shoot inside. The majority of the studio’s clientele just shoots 3D for fun. “Normally, I shoot bare bow, which means I shoot traditionally, without a sight or anything like that, and shooting 3D at different

distances with bare bow is a real challenge,” said Nelson Wong, who shoots as often as he possibly can. “It’s a lifestyle, it’s a sport, it’s exercise … eat, sleep, archery.” Once every quiver is empty after a round of shooting, the archers retrieve their arrows, sometimes getting help to pull them out of the foam models. If an arrow is so deep it won’t budge, a special tool is brought out to remove it. The hunts typically attract between 15 and 20 people for a night, Carroll said. But regulars like Martin Fuchs, who has yet to shoot 3D, also come out just to spend time in the social environment. “For me, archery is almost like therapy,” Fuchs said. “It’s very relaxing, it’s very calming, it’s how I can shut off my brain.”

Archers stand at a line in the back of the room and aim at different 3D targets in front of them.

ABOVE: Arrows are often so deep into the foam animals that the archers have difficulty removing them. LEFT: The event attracts a wide range of ages in participants. Catholic School Reimagined St. Ephrem Catholic Academy may not quite be the kind of Catholic School you remember. We pride ourselves on our progressive ideas in education while honoring our rich history and tradition. As our neighborhood has changed so we have changed with it. Our new academy has the foundational instruction in traditional academic subjects along with modernized learning techniques and technologies to help our students grow. Catholic Schools Week is a chance to highlight all of the great things that make Catholic education an important institution in our great city. An education at St. Ephrem Catholic Academy will not only give students an understanding in the foundations of language through the study of Latin and Greek Roots, but also prepare them for tomorrow’s world by teaching them in technology they will find most useful in their future endeavors. A great addition to our school this year has been our Digital Art classes. Here students learn to use modern iterations of Photoshop and Illustrator giving them the tools to succeed in High School and beyond allowing for the creative spirit to support the academic mind. The education of the whole child is at the heart of our mission. From weekly physical education classes to weekly Mass, our students are given the gift of a well-rounded education in a day and age where other schools are cutting programs. From the most talented and gifted students to those with special needs, we make it our goal to reach every child. Our Catholic faith and tradition give each of our students the education they deserve at a price that is affordable. As the Catholic Schools Week motto, Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed, states our school serves all to succeed in whatever world they wish to make. Please come visit our St. Ephrem Catholic Academy at 924 74th street Brooklyn, NY 11228 and see how we can best serve your child at our open house on January 26th following the 10 am Mass.

BY JOHN ALEXANDER COM

If ever a clergy member’s ministry embodied the essence of faith in Brooklyn, it was Father Joseph Gancila, who died on Monday, Jan. 6, at the age of 50. After stints in churches throughout the borough, the beloved priest was serving as a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Dyker Heights at the time of his death. Gancila was born in Brooklyn and attended the parish school at Regina Pacis and Xaverian High School. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn on June 2, 2001. In addition to his most current assignment, during his career, he served as a parochial vicar at St. Mary Mother of Jesus in Bensonhurst, Sacred Heart in Glendale, Our Lady of Angels in Bay Ridge and St. Bernadette in Dyker Heights. Gancila was remembered by Msgr. Kieran Harrington, the vicar for communication for the Diocese of Brooklyn, as the quintessential parish priest. Harrington knew Gancila for 22 years and was also a classmate of his at the seminary. “This is a man who loved being a priest in every ounce of his being,” Harrington told this paper. “He recorded in his own hand the names of every person he ever offered a Mass for or prayed for over the course of his 19 years as a priest. There were volumes and volumes of diaries listing those names,”

ON JAN. 14, 1929, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Los Angeles (AP) — Another of the Old West’s links with the glamorous past is gone in the passing here of Wyatt Earp, gun fighter, whose blazing six-shooters, notched a dozen times, were for most of his life allied on the side of law and order. Although Earp majored in gun fighting and adventure, his one contact with pugilism brought him unforgettable renown. Earp’s so-called ‘raw’ decision in the Bob Fitzsimmons-Tom Sharkey fight in San Francisco, Dec. 2, 1896, when he awarded the fight to Sharkey on a foul in the eighth round, caused a roar that reverberated through the boxing world for years and excited as much comment in its day as the long count given Gene Tunney at Chicago in 1927. Part of Earp’s life after he had laid aside his guns, which spoke often in the wild and woolly days of Dodge City and Ellsworth, Kan., and Tombstone, Ariz., ran parallel with that of Tex Rickard, and a last vain effort to send a word of cheer to his friend the promoter contributed to his death. Although he had been ill for some time, Earp left his bed here the day before Rickard died to send a telegram to his sick friend in Florida. The exertion caused a relapse and Earp died yesterday at the age of 80.”  ON JAN. 14, 1952, the Eagle reported, “A twin-engine Northeast Airlines plane, with 36 aboard, undershot the LaGuardia Field runway in the fog early today and plunged into the East River. At least 28 persons were injured. All passengers and crew members were rescued. Eyewitnesses reported that about 9 a.m. the plane, arriving from Boston, ‘sputtered’ and dived into the murky water about 1,000 feet from the field. A crash boat and a commercial tug were the first to arrive on the scene. Martin Byrne, 44, of 7522 Ridge Boulevard, aboard the tug, said the passengers lined the wings and tail assembly of the sinking airliner waving for help. Police, Coast Guard and Navy rescue facilities were rushed to the area and victims were taken to Flushing, Queens General and Mary Immaculate Hospitals in Queens and others were sent to Fordham Hospital in the Bronx. Police Commissioner George P. Monaghan, who directed police rescue operations at the emergency station at the foot of 14th Ave., College Point, said he was sure all passengers were removed from the plane. Joseph Amico, 27, of Mount Vernon, who operated the crash boat at the scene, took 25 persons from the sinking plane and transferred them to the nearby tug. ‘There was no screaming, no panic,’ he said, ‘although some of the passengers seemed to be suffering from shock.’”

Kids quiz Gounardes on climate change, public safety at town hall BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

hildren as young as five asked policy questions of State Sen. Andrew Gounardes at a special town hall the lawmaker hosted on Jan. 12. The Kids’ Town Hall, a two-hour session sponsored by Gounardes, took place at Edward B. Shallow Intermediate School on 16th Avenue and featured a discussion on a wide variety of topics, including climate change, vaping, public safety and discrimination. The town hall was aimed at children from elementary school age to high school students. The youngest person to ask Gounardes a question was a five-year-old who inquired about trash and littering in her neighborhood, according to the lawmaker’s office. State Sen. Andrew Gounardes fielded questions from youngsters on a wide variety of issues at his Kids’ Town Hall in Bensonhurst on Sunday.

Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and several other Southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods. He came away from the town hall impressed by the questions the children asked. “The kids of today will inherit the future we provide, and they deserve a seat at the table. Listening to young people inspires me and helps me focus on what’s important,” Gounardes said in a statement. At one point, the town hall was interrupted by protesters, according to Gounardes, who wrote about the interruption on Twitter. “Unfortunately, some anti-vaccine advocates disrupted the program, taking time away from the kids despite my repeated offer to meet with them after & were removed from the event. It’s a shame, but was necessary to continue & was out of respect for those who were waiting to ask Q’s,”

Gounardes tweeted. Despite the protest, Gounardes labeled the town hall a success and said he would like to host another one. “I’m excited to continue hearing from young people about their ideas to change the world, and look forward to the next time we can do this,” he tweeted. The session was designed to give youngsters the chance to ask questions of the local lawmaker on the issues they care about and to offer their ideas on how to make their communities and the world better places to live, according to Gounardes’ office. The town hall also included a resource fair. The participants included the Brooklyn Public Library, the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the Sunrise Movement, the Board of Elections and the Department of Health.

Sunset Park teen’s book celebrates Black History Month BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

S

unset Park resident Agatha Edwards is just 16 years old, but she is already a published author with six books under her belt including “The 100 Most Important African Americans.” Now, the Stuyvesant high school junior is raising funds via GoFundMe in order to give away 3,000 free copies of the book to kids in Brownsville for Black History Month. “The 100 Most Important African Americans” details the lives of important African Americans including activists, public servants, soldiers, lawyers, writers, painters, athletes and many more. “I wanted to give something back for the kids in Brooklyn,” Edwards told this paper. “I wanted them to be inspired by stories of real people who overcame huge odds, slavery and oppression to make a great contribution to America. These are 100 heroes who kids don’t know about. If they knew about them, they could use them as a model and be inspired,” she added. Heroic historical figures discussed include abolitionist Harriet Tubman, civil rights icon Rosa Parks, rebellion leader Nat Turner, writer W.E.B. Du Bois, and composers and musicians Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, as well as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Rep. Barbara Jordan, novelist

and teacher Toni Morrison, writer and activist Maya Angelou and President Barack Obama. Edwards explained why she chose to write this book. “Popular culture has the worst kinds of role models,” she said. “History can show us the best kinds of role models.” For the project, Edwards is collaborating with Brownsville Heritage House. “I wanted to work with Brownsville Heritage House because it was founded by Mother Gaston,” she told this paper. “I learned about her and included her in my book. Mother Gaston founded Brownsville Heritage House and devoted herself to teaching neighborhood kids about their history and heritage. This effort is really a big thanks to her for her sacrifices for others,” she added. Other books by Edwards include “The 100 Most Important New Yorkers,” “The 100 Most Important American Women,” “The Mystery of the Badlands,” “Grace and Susie” and “The Mystery in Arches.” “So far, 103 donors have helped raise $2,662,” according to Edwards. “The goal is to raise $10,500 to buy the 3,000 books and we will distribute them in one of New York’s most economically disadvantaged areas. It’s an incredible way to celebrate Black History Month, by putting this book into the hands of a child and helping affect them,” she added. To donate go to https://bit.ly/35OCrQx.

DRAMA LESSONS

ov. Cuomo’s State of the State address last week was notable for several items he did not address. There was no mention of amending the bail reform legislation which has been returning violent and repeat offenders to the street for the past three weeks. The new law also changed the discovery requirements, which in practice will force district attorneys to drop prosecutions as well as providing personal information on victims to the accused. The governor also failed to address the unusually large $6.2 billion state budget deficit. He did indicate that local governments needed to do more to rein in Medicaid costs. That is all well and good, but fails to take into account that his budget office has been kicking Medicaid costs

down the road from year to year, resulting in much of the deficit. Many legislators and budget-oriented good government groups warned him in early 2019 — warnings he did not heed. He also failed to acknowledge that the large migration of New Yorkers to other states was a growing problem. To this point, some of the wealthiest New Yorkers are taking their homes and their pocketbooks to other states, further hurting the state economically. What the governor did do in his address was create a heavily dramatized version of all he believes he has done to make the state better. This included a few slides of him involved in emergency operations. Hugh Carey of Brooklyn, a gubernatorial predecessor of Andrew Cuomo’s, in

a State of the State address during hard times, famously declared that the “Days of Wine and Roses” were behind us. For Andrew Cuomo, every day seems to be a day of wine and roses even if we have a large budget deficit, the population is fleeing and there is a general fear that the legislature has lost its way on important issues such as public safety. I was quoted in the Buffalo News as saying, “I know he has a law degree, but hearing this speech, you would think he went to drama school.” That would be my summation of the one-and-ahalf-hour 2020 Cuomo State of the State address: Mostly dramatic flourishes with little substance. *** The Democrats in the legislature seem to be all over the place on rolling back bail

HOLIDAY RECEIVING UNEQUAL TREATMENT

M

ost Americans in every state will be off from work Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For years, many states chose to ignore the namesake of this holiday completely for their version, while others used (or still use) the annual occasion as an even greater slight. Fifteen years after Dr. King’s assassination, President Reagan signed the holiday into law and it was first observed three years later, in 1986. It should be noted that Reagan opposed the idea, but when the bill was passed in Congress by an overwhelming, veto-proof margin, he was powerless to stop it. Several states, however, would spend years equivocating over their recognition of the federal holiday and it wasn’t until 2000 that all 50 states officially recognized

Martin Luther King Jr., at least in some fashion, on the third Monday of January. For years, Idaho and New Hampshire called the holiday by other names that didn’t cite Martin Luther King Jr. at all, instead choosing generic labels of “Civil Rights” or “Human Rights” for their official state observances. In the years following Martin Luther King Jr. Day becoming a federal holiday, Arizona went back and forth on the matter, until voters finally approved a 1992 referendum creating Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day. Their inability to commit to the holiday led the NFL to pull Super Bowl XXVII hosting duties from the state. Until 2000, employees of the state of South Carolina had to choose whether they wanted to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day or one of

three Confederate holidays. The idea of making citizens choose between Dr. King and the Confederacy may seem about as insulting to his legacy as one can fathom, but four other southern states took the indignity a step further. Until 2000, employees of the state of South Carolina had to choose whether they wanted to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day or one of three Confederate holidays. Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Virginia decided that their observances would pay tribute to the birthdays of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert E. Lee. In these states, the day honoring the United States' greatest African-American civil rights hero would simultaneously

increasing taxes. Republican legislators, to a person, support rolling back the bail reform law and oppose tax increases to address the budget deficit. You should ask your assemblymember and state senator where they stand. Clearly fixing this crazy bail law should have been done on day one. Instead, in the State Senate, the first business taken up was the establishment of automatic voter registration through contact with various government agencies including DMV. Who knows? Maybe this will increase the pool of voters who feel that the legislators who are running for re-election should

be removed from office for failing to address more urgent issues. *** In the past few days, congressional candidate Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis has received the unanimous endorsements of the executive committees of the Republican and Conservative Party organizations in both Brooklyn and Staten Island. She also reported over $1 million raised from thousands of contributions, almost $320,000 for the quarter, and well over $700,000 cash on hand. This w ill be one barn-burner of an election punctuated by Max Rose’s support for impeaching the president.

MATTER OF FACT BY JAY BROWN

commemorate a man who deserted our country to take up arms against the United States in an effort to maintain his right to own African-Americans. In 2000, Virginia finally removed Robert E. Lee’s name from the holiday, while it took Arkansas until 2018 to follow suit. Yet, neither state actually eliminated their Confederate commemorations altogether. Instead, they just moved them to other days on the calendar. Two states, which could be said to have been the primary battlegrounds of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, maintain shared King/Lee designations to this day. Alabama was where Rosa Parks’ defiant stand against segregation led to the

Montgomery bus boycott, but Montgomery was also the literal birthplace of the Confederacy when southern states formed their new slaveholding republic there. Alabama was where civil rights marchers were brutally beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, but Selma was also the site of one of several Civil War battles commanded by the Confederacy’s Nathan Bedford Forrest, an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan. Mississippi was where 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered and where Civil Rights leader Medgar Evers was gunned down in his carport as he returned home to his family, but was also the second state to secede and the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Alabama and Mississippi

featured prominently in both our Civil War and Civil Rights movement. This week, they once again recognize Dr. King and Robert E. Lee together. Both men, on the same day. One man who gave his own life, fighting to bring civil rights to African-Americans, and another man who took others’ lives, fighting a civil war to deny rights to African-Americans. Southern Brooklyn’s Fort Hamilton still has a street named General Lee Ave. Since Lee only attained the rank of general in the Confederacy, this U.S. base commemorates the period of Lee’s life when he killed U.S. soldiers as he fought to preserve slavery. On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let’s honor a man who deserves it and renew our efforts to remove honorifics for those who do not.

Focus on Bay Ridge By Charles F. Otey

Third Avenue ‘Pioneers’ will shine at 27th annual reception March 16 at Bay Ridge Manor Steve Casatelli, Abdul Elenani and writer Paula Katinas head Pioneer 2020 honor roll

While many are bemoaning the Amazon takeover of too much local retail business, some — especially attorney Bob Howe and his Merchants of Third Avenue team — are actually taking a positive attitude and championing what he calls “the unique service and sense of identity that local business can mean for a local community.” “We believe that the ‘human touch’ implicit in shopping on our avenue, which is so important in our daily lives, will ultimately sustain our members in the long run,” Howe said. His positive appraisal echoes news developments that are finally making government and other leaders realize that the huge tax breaks granted to Amazon and other mailorder behemoths should be slowed, along with a reduction of storefront taxes in this city and beyond. Another Bay Ridge leader, who asked for anonymity, agreed, telling us that “Congress may be slow in finally putting the brakes on the runaway internet, but the hearings finally being held in Washington indicate that, with political support, small businesses — which are the beating heart of the economy — deserve more support, especially lower and more equitable taxation.” Meanwhile, for the past 25 years, Howe has directed the proactive Merchants of Third Avenue Business-Civic Association. He reminds all that talented Pioneer Committee Chair Lori Pedone is preparing the 27th Pioneers of Third Avenue Reception, which will take place March 16 at the Bay Ridge Manor.

York City Partnership Chair Kathryn Wylde and New York Building Congress President Carlo Scissura (both Bay Ridgeites) have been cited as Pioneers, which, Howe says, “means that they use their positions and influence to help highlight the benefits of a ‘local marketplace’ where you can shop and dine and socialize with people you know.” Next on Howe’s agenda, under the legendary leadership of Festival Chair Chip Cafiero, is the Third Avenue Festival (now in its 49th year) and the annual Friday night Summer Strolls on 3rd. But Howe, Pedone and Merchants CoTreasurer Brian Chin advise that the 2020 class of Pioneers will include some leading names in many areas of endeavor. Among the initial slate of honorees are Steven Casatelli of the Kettle Black; Abdul Elenani, proprietor of the Cocoa Grinder; and journalist Paula Katinas, whose steady and professional reporting in the Home Reporter and Brooklyn Daily Eagle has earned her the reputation of being the borough’s most respected reporter. “We have pretty much decided on the other Pioneers,” Pedone said. “But we feel it’s best to spread out the announcements to provide a more unique focus on our honorees. “We should also mention that we have a new class of Pioneers to be announced in a month or so,” she added. “We’re creating a new category for Pioneer Newcomers, especially those new stores or businesses that have been active for at least a year.” Here are just some of the past Pioneers honored in past years:
