WHAT’S NEWS WHERE’S MY BUS?

Riders waiting for the bus can no longer tell what time it will arrive after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority systematically removed schedules from bus stop poles, according to four Bay Ridge lawmakers who fired off a letter to MTA Chairperson Patrick Foye objecting to the move and contending that the absence of printed schedules at bus stops is a hardship for riders who don’t have smart phones and cannot access apps like MTA Bus Time and MY MTA that offer up-to-the minute information on bus arrivals. Civic leader Mike Long talks about his distinguished career in public service BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

Brooklyn-born Mike Long has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in local and state politics. Long is undoubtedly a pillar within the borough where he served as a city councilmember and ultimately took on the role of New York State Conservative Party chair, a role he only recently retired from. Long’s career in politics began in 1981 when he was elected to the City Council as member at large for Brooklyn. He served until 1983, when the post was eliminated. In 1988, Long became chair of the New York State Conservative Party, a position he held until his retirement in January 2019. During his 30 years of service, Long left quite a mark on state politics and had the opportunity to get to know world-renowned political figures, celebrities and presidents of the United States. He was especially known as the model of a civic leader in the Bay Ridge community, where he and his brother Tom owned Long’s Wines and Liquors at Fifth Avenue and 79th Street. Long, 79, was a long-time resident of Bay Ridge before recently moving to Breezy Point. He and his wife Eileen have nine children and are parishioners at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church. Long is chair of the Board of Directors at Holy Angels Catholic Academy, a school with strong ties to the parish. He is a member of the board of directors of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn and vice chair of the Fort Hamilton Citizens Action Committee, and is also a member of the American Legion. Among the people Long helped are former Gov. George Pataki, former Congressmembers Susan Molinari, Vito Fossella, Michael Grimm and Dan Donovan, and former state Sen. Marty Golden, as well as current Assemblymember Nic-

ole Malliotakis. Long took the time to share some of the fascinating events he’s witnessed and people he’s met during his remarkable career. Spectator: You were a volunteer for Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign and you joined the Conservative Party in 1964. What first drew your attention to politics at that time? Long: In 1964, I was first attracted to politics through Barry Goldwater’s campaign for president. His outspoken and fierce positions against worldwide communism led me to get involved in the New York State Conservative Party. Spectator: What was it about the Conservative Party that resonated so strongly with you? Long: The beliefs and values that the New York State Conservative Party have always enunciated are what led me to my long term involvement in the Conservative movement. Also, it became clear to me that both Democrats and Republicans were not separating themselves on issues.

Spectator: In 1997, under your chairmanship, the Conservative Party helped elect Gov. George Pataki by delivering the amount of votes needed to narrowly defeat his opponent, incumbent Gov. Mario Cuomo. That must have been quite a rewarding feeling. Long: In 1994, I was proud to be the state chairman of the Conservative Party and to have participated and provided monumental change in the state of New York. By electing Governor George Pataki, the party helped to defeat a liberal icon like Mario Cuomo as governor of the State of New York. That year, the Conservative Party provided the margin of victory for Gov. Pataki and Attorney General Dennis Vacco in New York State. Spectator: What were some milestone events that

Former New York State Conservative Party Chair Mike Long occurred during your years as chair of the party? Long: Throughout the years, as chairman of the party there were many accomplishments. The most significant was the election of the governor and attorney general of the State of New York which created a sea change of policies. These changes benefited the citizens of our great state, and brought about tax cuts, stricter law enforcement policies and a more business-friendly environment for the entire state. Spectator: President Ronald Reagan once said, “The Conservative Party has established itself as a preeminent force in New York politics and an important part of our political history.” You were friends with Reagan. How did that friendship come about and any interesting stories you might share with us?

Long: In 1975, before his first run for president, I had the honor of introducing him as our featured guest speaker at our state dinner at the Waldorf Astoria, where we spent more than three hours in deep political conversations. In 1980 and again in 1984, I had the honor of serving as a member of the electoral college for the state of New York where I cast the votes for him as president of the United States. Through the years, with many events and activities, I grew to know him personally. Each time I was with him, my admiration grew. Spectator: What other presidents or heads of state have made a strong impression on you? Long: Other world leaders that have made great impressions upon me are (former British Prime Minister) Maggie

Thatcher and Pope John Paul II.

would have enjoyed it.

Spectator: Any other political stories you could talk about? Long: In 1981-1983, I was a member of the New York City Council. To date, I am the only member of the New York State Conservative Party to serve on the New York City Council.

Spectator: Following the loss of two key seats in the last election, do you think the Conservative and Republican Parties will be able to win back seats in Congress and the Senate? Long: I strongly believe with the right candidates we can retake the congressional and state senate seats.

Spectator: You also continue to serve as chair of Holy Angels Catholic Academy. How important is that role for you? Long: As chairman of Holy Angels Catholic Academy it was most rewarding to assist in providing an education and a strong faith foundation to students in our academy. Spectator: Were you ever granted an audience with the pope? Long: No, I was never granted an audience with the pope but

Spectator: How do you feel about the state of the Conservative Party today with new State Party Chair Jerry Kassar and Brooklyn’s Chair Fran Vella-Marrone? And how do you view the future of the Conservative Party in the next few years? Long: I have worked side by side with Jerry Kassar since 1977 and with Fran since 1980. The party couldn’t be in better hands.

‘Artivist’ mural done by youth artists highlights Sunset Park community issues BY VICTOR PORCELLI EDITORIAL @BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

The mural lies on the edge of the Upper Bay in Sunset Park along First Avenue.

ebrooklyn media/Photo by Victor Porcelli

A group of young artists unveiled a mural in Sunset Park on Aug. 28 that seeks to highlight issues within the community such as gentrification and leftover detrimental effects of Superstorm Sandy. At the corner of 56th Street and First Avenue, the mural stretches across a building on the edge of the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. It was done by a group of 18 artists from ages 19 to 24 as part of Groundswell NYC’s Artivist Allstars Program. Groundswell, and specifically its flagship program called the Summer Leadership Institute, seeks to support young artists by creating public murals over the five boroughs between July and August. Done in partnership with the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the National Academy of Design, the Sunset Park mural was led by teaching artist Raul

Ayal. Ayal and his team partook in 10 different sessions from May to late June in order to plan the mural, including a listening session with community members held at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Ayal said the group of young artists talked to community members and organizations to learn about Sunset Park and the unique issues residents face there. Members of the group also had conversations, did readings and exercises, and went to museums or watched movies to inform their approach to the mural. The mural includes images of the Statue of Liberty being hit by intense waves of water Ayal said represents Superstorm Sandy, as well as a Mayan figure surrounded by roots being stomped on by modern-looking business shoes. Elsewhere, averagelooking people can be seen cleaning the water, with images of nature and a goddess with open-arms depicted further down.

Sahadi’s to finally open its doors in Sunset Park BY JAIME DEJESUS

After a long wait, Sahadi’s is finally opening its doors in Sunset Park. The family specialty grocery store that’s been a Brooklyn fixture since 1948 announced in early 2018 that it would open its second location in Industry City. On Thursday, Aug. 29, it will offi-

cially make its grand opening. The new space is 7,500 square feet with approximately 80 seats and a bar. It will offer the traditional ancient grains and spices, bins of freshly roasted nuts, dried fruits, imported olives and old-fashioned barrels of coffee beans that customers look for at its first location on Atlantic Avenue, along with new additions. second location finally open. “Our family and our business have deep roots in Brooklyn. We live here, we work here,” she said. “Brooklyn is a dynamic place. We’re constantly looking for ways to innovate while preserving what our longtime customers know and love. The Industry City store will allow us to share the beloved Sahadi food and hospitality culture in a new, modern setting.” The Industry City location will offer light breakfast and full coffee service, lunch, bakery items, and grab-and-go dinner options. The new eatery will also offer an open kitchen that allows customers to order their food and watch staff prepare made-toorder saj and pita breads. The new store has been designed to create, “a warm and relaxed community vibe — a departure from the ticketed, bazaar-like atmosphere at the original location,” Sahadi’s said in a release. “The Industry City store is just a few blocks from Sahadi’s longtime production facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The Sunset Park warehouse houses an 18-foot-tall roaster which freshly roasts top quality nuts and seeds, stores thousands of pallets of imported delicacies, and supplies accounts across the country.”

plying gas to homes and businesses. In a letter to the Department of Public Service, Gov. Andrew Cuomo wrote that the state would instead bring in other companies. In his letter, Cuomo directed DPS to broaden an investigation it is currently conducting into the moratorium. In addition, the governor directed DPS to consider alternatives to National Grid as a franchisee for some or all of the areas it currently serves if the problem is not resolved. National Grid announced earlier this year that it would

no longer provide gas hookups to new or returning customers, citing a shortage in the supply chain and an increase in demand for service. It cannot increase gas capacity unless New York State approves a permit to construct a new gas pipeline between New Jersey and New York, company officials have stated. Homeowners and businesses in Brooklyn have been complaining to their local elected officials after being rebuffed by National Grid if they have complied with the company requirement that they turn off gas service during renovation projects, and

request, following the completion of the project, that gas service be reinstated. According to Assemblymember Bill Colton, a Democrat who represents Gravesend, part of Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights, the moratorium is hurting working families and mom and pop businesses. Cuomo ordered DPS to broaden its probe to include the investigation of incidents in which National Grid has refused to restore gas service. The governor wrote that DPS must “take any steps” within its authority and should use “appropriate penalties and sanctions” to ensure that National Grid immediately provides service to customers affected by these refusals.

DOT to install guardrails along Belt Parkway to protect promenade BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The New York City Department of Transportation will install guardrails along the Belt Parkway in Bensonhurst at a faster pace than originally planned after community leaders and lawmakers requested quick action to increase public safety along the Shore Parkway Promenade, the bike and pedestrian path that sits adjacent to the busy highway. DOT officials confirmed that they will be putting up guardrails this fall. The original plan was to install the barriers in 2021. The Belt Parkway runs alongside the Shore Parkway Greenway for several miles along the Gravesend Bay waterfront. There are no

guardrails along the section of the eastbound Belt Parkway between Exits 4 and 5 (Bay Eighth Street to Bay Parkway). Community Board 11 officials breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s wonderful news,” Board 11 District Manager Marnee Elias-Pavia said. “Community Board 11 had called on DOT to install guardrails on the Belt from Bay Eighth Street to Bay Parkway following the terrorist attack on the West Side Highway.” Elias-Pavia was referring to an October, 31, 2017 incident in which a driver plowed into crowds of people in Hudson River Park, killing eight and injuring 11. “Our promenade is totally exposed,” she said.

The promenade is a popular area that in warm weather is crowded with residents biking, strolling, jogging, roller-blading and fishing, according to local officials. Councilmember Mark Treyger and Vincent Gentile, who was serving in the City Council at the time, began pushing DOT to install guardrails several years ago. This past spring, U.S. Rep. Max Rose and Councilmember Justin Brannan, who succeeded Gentile in the Council, held a press conference on the promenade near 17th Avenue to illustrate the danger bike riders and pedestrians face when the only thing separating them from vehicular traffic on the highway is a patch of grass.

News From Your Neighborhood WILLIAMSBURG STREET DANGEROUS FOR DRIVERS

WILLIAMSBURG — Driving down South Fifth Street has become dangerous because painted street markers are missing, according to CBSNewYork. A parked car lane is in the middle of the street, with bikes on one side and car traffic on the other. At least one confused driver was about to line up behind the parked cars until he realized that they were stationary. A spokesperson for the city Department of Transportation said that crews will be painting markings on the street this month, weather permitting. 

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT FLOODS SLOPE ROWHOUSES

PARK SLOPE — A massive city construction project has resulted in the routine flooding of several Park Slope brownstones, according to the Brooklyn Paper. “People have had anywhere from 2 to 16 inches of sewer water and stormwater in their homes,” Michael Saunders, who lives near Sixth Avenue and St. Johns Place, told the Brooklyn Paper. “It’s cost me thousands of dollars to deal with the damage.” The project requires workers to dig a massive trench along Sixth Avenue between Union Street and Park Place in an effort to replace underground water mains and install sewers, catch basins, and manholes. 

LAWSUIT: RED-LIGHT CAMERAS ARE ILLEGAL

CITYWIDE — A Brooklyn man is suing the city Department of Transportation, claiming that red-light cameras are illegal, according to the New York Post. The plaintiff, whose name is Monroe Street, filed his lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday after he was issued a $50 fine for going through a red light in Brooklyn. He claims his ticket’s accompanying “Technician’s Certificate,” which is designed to ensure that a worker double-checked the red-light camera, is illegal because it wasn’t notarized. Street’s lawsuit wants any red-light camera tickets issued to drivers since August 2013 to be voided, since most of them haven’t been notarized. 

CITY AGENCY COULD BUY EX-CATHOLIC SCHOOL SITE

KENSINGTON — Brooklyn Catholic leaders are in the process of demolishing a rundown former school building on Fort Hamilton Parkway between 40th and 41st streets and are also looking to sell the site, according to the Brooklyn Paper. When asked whether they were in the process of purchasing the property, a spokesperson for the city’s School Construction Authority suggested that they are. “We are very early in the process,” said spokesperson Kevin Ortiz. “The [School Construction Authority] is always looking at diocese buildings as viable locations for new public school space,” Ortiz added. The building was formerly occupied by St. Catherine of Alexandria School, which the diocese closed in 2005 due to declining enrollment. 

FORMER REPUBLICAN POL MAY HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

BAY RIDGE — Former Republican State Sen. Marty Golden is considering a run against Democratic State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, according to Kings County Politics. Gounardes lost to Golden in the 2012 Senate race but defeated him last year by a little more than 1,000 votes. Gounardes’ win was part of the “Blue Wave” that also enabled Democrat U.S Rep. Max Rose (Southern Brooklyn-Staten Island) to defeat Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan, Kings County Politics said. State Conservative Party Chair Jerry Kassar, Golden’s former chief of staff, said, “Marty has not made a decision yet. We’ve been taking to him, and he’s not sure yet, as he has a very good job with the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens.” 

STREET COVERED WITH RAW CHICKEN PARTS

BOERUM HILL — A stretch of Bond Street in Boerum Hill was covered with raw chicken parts last Friday morning, according to The New York Times. “Every car and truck that pushed through the scattered parts unleashed a series of pops, snaps and cracks,” the Times reported. The parts were mainly thighs and wings, and there may have been some turkey parts as well, onlookers said. Neighborhood residents believed the parts fell off a truck, as there are several butchers nearby. 

The victim told police he was serving customers at the chain’s location on Jay Street near Myrtle Avenue when the suspect threatened to hit him in the face in a bid to steal the coffee cup. The tour, led by architect Arthur Platt, leaves from Chelsea Piers, moves along the West Side, then turns around for a look at the changing waterfronts of Brooklyn and Queens. “One of the main themes at the forefront has been, how do you build an urban waterfront in an age of rising sea levels and frequent storm events,” Platt told NY1. 

South Brooklyn to host multiple 9/11 memorial events BY VICTOR PORCELLI EDITORIAL@ BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

On September 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked commercial jetliners and flew them into the World Trade Center, Brooklyn residents were among uniformed service member, first responders and financial sector victims. Now, 18 years after the horrific attack, Brooklyn residents will hold a host of memorials for those who died on that terrible day. At 10 p.m. on Friday Sept. 6, the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton will hold its annual 9/11 Commemorative Memorial Ceremony. Fort Hamilton is the only active military base in New York City. Its ceremony often includes a moment of silence and a bugle performance of “Retreat.” The Night Before Candlelight Ceremony will take place at MCU Park’s Wall of Remembrance at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10. The wall is engraved with images of 346 firefighters, 37 Port Authority officers, 23 New York City police officers, three New York State officers, one member of the New York Fire Patrol and one rescue dog. This year, the ceremony will use electric candles and will have Fire Department chaplains present. “It’s hard to realize that it’s been 18 years since 9/11,” Sol Moglen, honorary deputy chief with the FDNY and founder of the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance, told this paper. “This is the 18th anniversary, and a

lot of the families don’t feel comfortable going down to Ground Zero because it’s a very sad place. But in Coney Island, at the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance, they come to celebrate them and that’s the nice part: we’ve made it a celebration.” Those interested can meet at the memorial at 1904 Surf Ave. at 7 p.m. On Sept. 11 itself, Brooklyn State Sen. Andrew Gounardes will be continuing the tradition of his predecessor, Marty Golden, by holding two vigils: one in Marine Park and one in Bay Ridge. First, the senator will mark the anniversary at Marine Park ebrooklyn media/file photo in front of the Carmine Carro Community Center at 6 p.m. A A scene from last year’s memorial on the 69th Street Pier. second vigil will be held at the 69th Street Pier at Bay Ridge committee, explained. “So, Commemoration Ceremony Mychal Judge, a Franciscan Avenue and Shore Road at 7:30 one day out of the year, the at 4 p.m. This year’s cere- priest, was also killed. Finally, the 18th Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5k Run & Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Siller was an FDNY firefighter who died trying to rescue survivors. The run retraces his final footsteps, beginning at the Brooklyn entrance to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and finishing across from the World Trade Center at West and Murray streets. The run will be followed by a barbecue and concert; 30,000 participants are expected to attend. The event honors all first responders, and this year will for the first time also include tributes to service men and women killed in the line of duty since 9/11; their faces will be displayed on banners held by ROTC Cadets. For information on participating, go to tunnel2towers.org. Noah Singer contributed reporting to this article.

I saw the death blow that brought down the Bowne building. It happened on Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 2, 2019. Construction workers all over America had the day off. But a demolition crew was on the job at the Red Hook property where entrepreneur Samuel Winter Bowne built a four-story brick grain storehouse for Gowanus Canal commerce in 1886. At 10:23 a.m., an excavator with a rope attached to it backed over debris-strewn ground — and with a single yank, tore the roof right off the historic S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse at 595 Smith St. Mighty timbers that had held up the roof since Grover Cleveland was President snapped like toothpicks.

A long, flat panel of roofing material, which was ribbed with a row of wood beams, twisted as it plummeted earthwards. A torrent of brown dust cascaded to the ground.

At 10:40 a.m., when I left my sidewalk vigil for the S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse, the excavator was using a pair of giant jaws to pick up broken bits of the building and toss them into a pile.

‘PROJECT MAYHEM’

RUBBLE IN THE RAIN

Workers at the site cheered so loudly that I heard them on the other side of the Gowanus Canal, where I stood on the sidewalk of the Hamilton Avenue Bridge as noisy traffic rushed by. The S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse, which belongs to the Chetrit Group, is the Gowanus Canal-side industrial building that preservation advocates and elected officials tried to save from demolition. The roof the workers ripped off was the last thing that held together what remained of the north half of the building.

An excavator is hard at work at the S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse even as rain falls on Labor Day afternoon. By early morning on Labor Day, a large portion of the brick wall on the side of the building facing the Gowanus Canal had already been knocked down. An interior wall that had divided the north and south sides of the grain storehouse was exposed to the open air. When I stood on the sidewalk on Smith Street, I could see graffiti murals on it. One of them was labeled “Project Mayhem” in big letters. The demolition crew was working although the city Buildings Department had issued a Partial Stop Work Order for the property on Aug. 29. On Monday, I asked agency spokesperson Andrew Rudansky if what they were doing was legal under the order’s provisions. He said the order solely banned “scaffold work.”

Buildings Department inspectors who checked up on the crew at 595 Smith St. early Monday afternoon “determined that no scaffold work was ongoing, and the active demolition work did not violate the Partial Stop Work Order,” Rudansky told me. A few days earlier, the demolition crew had obliterated the south half of the building. That’s the part of the historic property where a two-alarm fire was “deliberately set” — those are the words of FDNY spokesperson Jim Long — in June 2018. As a Bureau of Fire Investigation report obtained by City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca says, on the night of that fire, a nearby hydrant that didn’t work properly had a brick and screws stuffed inside it.

After I left the doomed building, it rained a lot. When a huge mid-afternoon downpour subsided somewhat, I returned to the Bowne building and discovered the workers had done lots more demolition in my absence. The very northernmost corner of the structure was still standing. Just about everything else was gone, gone, gone, reduced to mammoth mounds of rubble in the rain. As thunder cracked in the distance and light rain fell, workers walked on wet piles

of lumber. They don’t appear very clearly in my photos, but they were easy for me to see because they were wearing bright yellow vests. The rain stopped for a few minutes, and the excavator got to work, tossing around torn-up timbers once again. It started raining lightly, but the machine kept right on rumbling.

‘SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE PERMITTING PROCESS’ In 2018, before there was a fire at the Bowne building, the Gowanus Landmarking Coalition asked the Landmarks Preservation Commission to put the property on its calendar to consider designating it as a landmark. That didn’t happen.

Red Hook’s S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse has been torn down In the afternoon on Labor Day, everything but the north corner of the Bowne building has been reduced to rubble. — Continued from page 12INB — “The Bowne Storehouse is the Empire State Building of the Gowanus Canal,” Simeon Bankoff, the executive director of the Historic Districts Council, told me in July. It was the waterway’s most visible 19th century industrial building. The Chetrit Group didn’t respond to a request for comment about what it plans to construct on the Bowne building site. Earlier this year, Menchaca revealed that during his first term as councilmember, the developer showed him a design with residential towers. In the wake of the S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse’s demise, preservationists and community activists think city regulations governing demolition permits should be changed — in particular, permits for buildings with ongoing fire investigations.

INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

“Something is wrong with the permitting process,” Bankoff said. “On the one hand, you have the city recognizing that this is a worthy historic resource which has been damaged under suspicious circumstances; on the other, permits are issued to demolish the building and once issued, trump everything else,” he explained.

‘THE LAW NEEDS TO BE CHANGED TO STOP BAD ACTORS’ “If there is an ongoing fire and/or police investigation of a site, the Buildings Department needs to bar issuance of demolition permits for the site until such time as the investigation has been completed,” Gowanus Landmarking Coalition member Brad Vogel said. Artist Ken Rush shows me his painting needs to be an automatic red of the S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse flag“This in the Department of Buildings’ sysafter a June 2018 fire at the building. tem — it should not be subject to the whim of the investigating agency as to whether it decides to inform DOB of the investigation or not,” he added. “The historic Bowne Storehouse is a casualty of a system that does not work and an unethical developer who knew where all the cracks in the system are and who committed lots of violations along the way,” said Carolina Salguero, founder and president of PortSide NewYork, which operates a museum and floating cultural center on the Mary A. Whalen tanker.

Plenty of fun in the rain and the sun By Paul Frangipane, Jimin Kim and Mark Davis

Monday was Labor Day, which means the West Indian Day Parade and preceding J’Ouvert celebration turned the neighborhood of Crown Heights into a massive celebration of Caribbean culture. The combined events drew thousands of spectators as the neighborhood was decorated with people dressed in colorful costumes and traditional attire. J’Ouvert, the pre-dawn observance that ramps up to the West Indian Day Parade, is celebrated with steel pan drumming, dancing and reveling (which includes motor oil, paint and baby powder body painting). The name means daybreak, but starting last year and continuing this year, the celebration began at 6 a.m. as a way to help curb violence by pushing the beginning of the parade into the morning light. Several thousand police officers also accompanied participants as they made their way across Empire Boulevard and down Nostrand Avenue. The West Indian Day Parade, which has been held in Crown Heights since 1969, was full of traditional Caribbean head dresses, dancing and flags. The parade kicked off at Ralph Avenue and made its way across Eastern Parkway to Grand Army Plaza.

BACK TO SCHOOL Reaching-Out gives kids backpacks to start school year in style BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

Hundreds of children will be ready when school opens on Sept. 5, thanks to Reaching-Out Community Services Inc., which distributed free backpacks and school supplies at a late summer event outside its Bensonhurst headquarters on Thursday morning. Tom Neve, founder and

executive director of Reaching-Out, a non-profit organization that assists low-income residents, said more than 700 families signed up for the back-to-school event. “It went wonderfully,” Neve told this paper. Neve and an army of volunteers handed out backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons and other school supplies to the

happy and eager kids. Tents were set up on the sidewalk outside Reaching-Out’s offices at 7708 New Utrecht Ave. and children and their parents patiently lined up to have the opportunity to stop

at each booth to collect school supplies they needed. Reaching-Out, which Neve, a retired New York City sanitation worker, founded more

than 25 years ago, operates a food pantry for underprivileged families and Neve said he sees the back-to-school backpack giveaway as an extension of the organization’s mission. “We feed the body, so we think it’s important to feed the mind,” he said. “It’s another way we like to give back to the community.” Reaching-Out conducts a back-to-school drive every year. Neve credited the event’s sponsors and volunteers with

its success. The volunteers who helped Neve hand out the school supplies included several members of Midwood High School’s Key Club. The sponsors who donated funds to help Reaching-Out purchase hundreds of backpacks and school supplies included the Verrazano Rotary Club, Ben-Bay Kiwanis Club, Dime Community Bank, Bensonhurst Center for Health and Rehabilitation and J.L. HVac Inc. Councilmember Justin Brannan, a Democrat representing Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and parts of Bensonhurst, secured city funding to help Neve with the event.

Tom Neve posed with an excited Melisa Chanash. “These are the people who make it happen. If not for them, I couldn’t do it,” Neve said of Brannan and the sponsors.

NYU Langone preps students with supplies, vaccines in back-to-school event BY VICTOR PORCELLI EDITORIAL@ BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

Sunset Park residents received free school supplies, dental screenings and face paintings from NYU Langone Health at a back-to-school event on Wednesday. At Martin Luther Playground, right across from NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, hundreds of families flocked to receive everything they need before the school year starts. The event was timed to occur during National Health Center Week, which celebrates federally qualified health centers across the country. With around 60 sites in New York City, NYU Langone’s Family Health Centers serve most of southwest Brooklyn. The centers run more than 40 school-based programs and eight primary care sites, according to Executive

Director of the centers Larry McReynolds. With the mission of increasing access to care in marginalized or hard-to-reach populations, the centers partnered with Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus and a variety of community programs on Wednesday. More than 1,600 backpacks filled with pens, pencils, a notebook, a folder and more were handed out. Dental screenings, a tooth-brushing presentation and vaccinations were also provided by the health center. “We want to make sure that kids are ready to go back to school physically, mentally, financially and also have the supplies to be successful when the new school year starts,” McReynolds told this newspaper. McReynolds said that National Health Center Week is held purposefully around the

same time as kids get ready to head back to school because children are required to complete physicals anyway at the beginning of the school year. Cynthia Felix, a board member of the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, said that she feels the timing couldn’t be better. “It’s a great week to do it because a lot of parents are anxious about back-to-school and how to pay for their supplies,” Felix told the Brooklyn Reporter. “This gives them the opportunity to get everything done before school begins and they don’t have that anxiety. Their kids go back to school confident that they have their supplies and the parents go back to school confident that their kids are healthy and ready to conquer school.” This year, in particular, there have been policy changes that may affect the communities the centers serve, McReynolds

Amy Cunningham.

Writing a condolence letter: Do’s and don’ts with Amy Cunningham It’s difficult to know what to say when someone close to you has lost a loved one. The best intentioned of us get caught up in finding the right words, leaving that message unwritten and unsent. But it’s the act of sending that’s important, suggests licensed funeral director and death educator Amy Cunningham, stressing, “Take excellence off your list of objectives.” On March 30 of this year, Cunningham led a step-by-step guide to the Art of the Condolence Letter in the Green-Wood Cemetery’s Modern Chapel. Drawing on letters written by some of history’s greatest luminaries, Cunningham encouraged a frank discussion on the lost art, delving deeply into conversations on grief, loss and, ultimately, the human experience.

The writing of a condolence letter, Cunningham emphasizes, is about practice, not perfection. She urges one to consider it as a meditative exercise rather than focusing on the final result. “Condolence notes are in essence always failures, but that’s okay,” she says. “The act of writing them is the point. The act of comforting is secondary.” Wondering where to begin? Cunningham has a few pointers. She recommends a letter sent by mail, even better if it’s handwritten. She stresses that it’s the personal touch that makes all the difference. (Cunningham presented her personal writing kit during the program, inspired by Victorian stationery boxes, to illustrate this point.) Let them know you are there and thinking of them. Share a memory or story. She

also pointed out a few common blunders to avoid. Say “died,” not “passed away.” Don’t say, “I know how you feel.” You may not have the words of Emily Dickinson or Ernest Hemingway, but you’re forging human connection, and that’s what really matters. Lastly, Cunningham stresses that it’s not only about the recipient. It is also a deeply personal experience for the writer, who in the act of writing is forced to reflect upon his or her own experience and understanding of life and death. This discussion, and other death education programming, including the Death Café, hosted by Cunningham at GreenWood since 2017, are just some of the ways that Green-Wood continues to engage its audiences in conversations on death and dying in the 21st century.

Keep sharing. Keep loving. Keep living. Here’s the essential truth about hospice: it’s more about living, than dying. In fact, studies show that patients who receive hospice care actually live longer than those who do not. MJHS Hospice provides the clinical, emotional and spiritual support that patients and their families need to help make the most of the precious time they have together, so they can relive old memories, share stories and keep on laughing. Why wills matter Everyone needs and should have a will. A will is a legal declaration of how a person wishes his or her possessions to be disposed of after death. Wills make sure that the antique jewelry which belonged to a beloved grandmother will be passed on to a daughter or that college will be possible for a grandson or that one’s favorite charity will receive funds to continue its good work. If you die without a will, your possessions and property will be distributed only among your family members; perhaps not exactly the way you want. New York State law will make these determinations – not you. No charities or friends would benefit. Many other legal complications may arise after a person dies “intestate” or without a will. Some of them can be costly and lead to an unnecessary tax burden on your estate or family. Many people believe that a will is only necessary when there is a significant amount of money, valuables and property to be distributed after death to loved ones, children, families, friends and charities. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even a person with a limited amount of money or property should have a will. How does one go about making a will? The first thing to do is to list all your assets and then decide whom you want to share these assets. You will also need to think about a “personal representative” or “executor” who will carry out the provisions of your will. Most experts caution against drafting your own will without using professional legal advice. Even though the “will” forms available on the internet or at an office supply store look

impressive, they may omit an essential requirement. It is all right to use these forms for a draft of your will, but it is best to call an attorney and make an appointment to discuss the final draft of your will. Many attorneys are willing to quote prices over the telephone so be sure to discuss fees in advance. Many offer a free or low-cost first consultation. A copy of your will along with any funeral arrangements you have made should be kept in a safe place where family or a close friend can have access to the information when needed. A safe deposit box is sealed immediately after the death notice is published, so it is not recommended for storing instructions for funeral arrangements, wills or insurance documents. If you do not have a personal attorney, call the New York State Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service at 1-800-342-3661. You can request a comprehensive report on Wills and Living Trusts by writing: AARP, 601 E Street, NW, Washington, DC 20049. YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS ‘HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’ (something about 'sense of place'...'no place like home'.... home is where the heart is, but sometimes home is where the hearth is...) ‘There’s no place like home’ is the line spoken by Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, in the film The Wizard of Oz at the end when Dorothy has defeated the Wicked Witch of the West and revealed the true nature

of Oz, and now she's ready to go back to Kansas. Home Improvement was one of the Top 10 highest rated finales. Believe it or not, it even lured -even chartered-Frasier, Dallas, Happy Days and Gunsmoke. Though it still ranks under the imperviously popular M*A*S*H. Our favorite Home reality shows are not as dreamy as they seem. Some HGTV renovation shows allow you to keep the furniture, but Fixer Upper isn't one of them. The only way to enjoy Joanna Gaines' stunning furniture finds forever is to purchase them all for a hefty price.

Jimmy Doolittle, center, wins the Thompson trophy race at the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1932. He is shown with Charles Thompson, sponsor of the race, and Mrs. Thompson. AP Photo ON SEPT. 4, 1932, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Cleveland (AP) — A new land plane speed king was crowned today at the National Air Races as Major James H. Doolittle blistered over a three-kilometer course at an average of 296.287 miles an hour. Eclipsing the eight-year-old record of Warrant Officer Bonnett, France, by 17.807 miles an hour, the St. Louis flier blazed his snub-nosed plane six times over the straightaway and took the best four consecutive laps for his high average. He carried a sealed baro-graph and his only doubt of not making an official record lay in a pull-up from the course at the beginning of his runs when a forma-tion of army planes crossed his path to land. His record may only be stamped as official after the instrument is calibrated in Washington and the flight report homologated by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, world governing aviation sport body in Paris.”

Keep your motor running! Motor oil never wears out, it just gets dirty. Old oil can be recycled, re-refined and used again. Bring your own tote! It takes a 15-year-old tree to produce 700 grocery bags. Burying coffins also means that 90,272 tons of steel, 2,700 tons of copper and bronze, and over 30 million feet of hardwood covered in toxic laminates are also buried per year. However, a British company called “Ecopod offers coffins made from 100% recycled paper.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Sept. 5, 1946

ON SEPT. 5, 1946, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The biggest maritime tie-up in the country’s history was under way today as two A.F.L. unions called out 65,000 seamen in a strike against a Wage Stabilization Board ruling against a negotiated pay increase. All in all, some 500,000 maritime workers were affected, their ranks including C.I.O. unions which have pledged their support to the walkout. The action in New York Harbor hit 310 American ships and paralyzed industrial activities on some 300 piers in the metropolitan area. In Brooklyn the total volume of shipping is about 25 percent of the entire port area, according to an estimate by a spokesman of the Port of New York Authority. According to authority figures, there are 204 piers in the harbor section, 58 of them in Brooklyn. The industrial paralysis at the borough’s waterfront, already present because of the trucking strike, was now made complete by the shipping walkout.â€? ď‚Ťď‚Ťď‚Ť ON SEPT. 5, 1947, the Eagle reported, “Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 5 (U.P.) — President [Harry] Truman said today the United States is determined to support the United Nations with ‘all the resources at our command,’ but warned it will take steadfastness of purpose, unremitting toil and infinite patience to make the U.N. work. Mr. Truman, speaking to a joint session of the Brazilian Congress, said the nations of the Western Hemisphere have demonstrated to the world that right-thinking men can submerge their ‘individual prejudice and their individual aims’ to an agreement that will bring ‘great benefit’ to the world.â€?

The astronauts on Apollo 14 carried tree seeds into space with them, and later back on Earth the seeds sprouted and grew. The trees were then given away to various state forestry services in 1975 as part of the nation’s bicentennial celebration. Shhh! Some trees ‘talk’ to each other. When WIllows are attacked by webworms, other wills appear to produce more tannin, which makes it harder from the pests to dissect their leaves. OPINION FAIR PRACTICES

was intrigued by the response of many Asian nations to the United States’ increased tariffs on goods imported from Communist China. Many of them saw an opportunity for increased U.S. consumption of their own goods. It’s an opportunity that places like Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand, to name a few, are taking. In fact, Japan just a few days ago signed a new trade agreement with the United States. Other nations are working with their industries to seal long-term deals with large U.S. retailers or businesses so that China could be frozen out for years to come. I do not suspect that this has gone unnoticed in China.

A

It has a sagging economy and enormous environmental issues, and there are gigantic protests in Hong Kong, considered key to China’s economic well-being. It does not need further pressure on its exports nor does it benefit from placing tariffs on American goods, which will translate into fewer items on its retail shelves. President Trump plays hard ball. It is likely that many of the international trade specialists in our government or academia do not agree with him. Then, again, for many years addressing unfair trade practices conducted by Mainland China has not occurred. The president deserves credit for bringing this issue to a head.

*** As of this writing, Dorian, a gigantic hurricane, was bearing down on the eastern seaboard of the United States after a devastating blow to the Bahamas. I have no crystal ball and can only pray that the likely impacted communities from Florida to North Carolina are spared a severe hit. This storm is a reminder of the close bonds so many in the New York City metropolitan area have with this part of our country. Like just about everyone I know, I have relatives and friends throughout Florida. New York’s association with the Carolinas for retirement has grown enormously in the past 15 years. Savannah, Charleston and Myrtle Beach have become

almost as big as southern Florida for snowbirds and vacationers. As such, I do not think any of us on Sunday watched the news reports with a detachment to the dangers building in the South. We closely watch every report, a bit helpless but ready to do whatever we can do to assist our families and friends.

NEVER FORGET

fter walking a few miles south, we merged onto the Manhattan Bridge with stone-faced people from lower Manhattan. A woman covered in soot emerged, resembling an actual stone figure. As we ascended, a man pulled out a typical New York souvenir and announced, “Get your Twin Towers statues!” It was despicable, but nobody acknowledged him. Though thousands of us silently ambled past, I’m certain none of us have forgotten that one person trying to take advantage of the tragedy of 9/11. Around the same time, Donald Trump was being interviewed on WWOR-TV. He bragged about his lower Manhattan property, saying, "And now it's the tallest." Nobody else had mentioned this because (a) it wasn’t true, and (b) normal people

weren’t contemplating which building was now the biggest and best. Five weeks ago, President Trump hosted a White House ceremony for the reauthorization of the Victim Compensation Fund. Before 60 first responders, he said, "I was down there also, but I'm not considering myself a first responder." In 2016, speaking of those who cleared rubble and searched for survivors, he claimed, "I helped a little bit." People who were there, like FDNY Deputy Chief Richard Alles, who attended the White House ceremony in July, have stated they know private citizen Donald Trump was not at Ground Zero. Donald Trump lies. A lot. But lying about 9/11 is truly abhorrent. He took $150K from a program for small businesses hurt by 9/11, despite

publicly saying none of his properties sustained damage. He later claimed it was reimbursement for charitable work, but an aide to former-Gov. Pataki confirmed the program didn’t reimburse for that and records show funds were requested for cleanup and repair. Donald Trump lies. A lot. But lying about 9/11 is truly abhorrent.

Trump said he donated $10K to the 9/11 fund, but the comptroller’s office verified no such donation was made. There are only records of $1K to a Scientology program for first responder treatments and $100K to the 9/11 Museum during the 2016 campaign from his Trump Foundation, which is funded with others’ donations. He contends that from his

COMMON SENSE *** Gov. Cuomo supports raising the wages of prison inmates. Will he use the $25 fee on the new license plates he is requiring many New Yorkers who do not need or wish to replace their license plates to pay? Of course, I say that with a tinge of sarcasm. Beyond the sarcasm, I do have a point. New York State is a black hole for taxpayer dollars. Money goes into the hole, it disappears, and then naively we start all over again. The license fee is illustrative of the problem. One additional point on the license plate fee issue. The governor, in an attempt

to deflect blame, called on the legislature to return to Albany to fix what he now considers a problem. This is amazing considering the original statute from several years ago allows a maximum fee of $25 to be set by the executive branch — the governor, in other words. Thus, the governor can order a reduction to say $10 or even lower if he should desire. Instead, he called for the legislature to return at a cost of $2 or $3 million to fix a problem that he created and he can solve. I assume he thought no one would notice. He was wrong.

apartment window he witnessed people jumping from the towers, even though he was more than four miles away. I watched that morning from a midtown building a mile closer, and you couldn’t see that. Trump claimed, "I lost hundreds of friends in 9/11," yet he cannot name one. For this to be true, he’d have had to have known one in every 10 people who died. He’s said, “I watched in Jersey City, N.J., where thousands and thousands of people were cheering," adding, "It was on television. I saw it… a heavy Arab population, that were cheering as the buildings came down." Police say this didn’t happen and there are no reports or

television footage of it. On 9/11/13, he tweeted, “I’d like to extend my best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th.” He bragged that his appearance on “Face The Nation” in 2017 gave the show its highest ratings since 9/11, saying 9/11 was a tremendous advantage in comparing ratings. When he didn’t like the proposed design of the new Trade Center, he griped, "The terrorists win if we build this job the way it is. I mean, I don't want to have the terrorists win... and that's what's going to happen if we build this pile of junk." Normal people don't invoke the idea of terrorists winning because of a

design they dislike or use our nation’s darkest day to compare ratings. Normal people don’t use 9/11 to extend best wishes, call out enemies or fabricate a story to demonize a group of people. Normal people don’t lie about seeing things they didn’t see that day, losing hundreds of friends or donating to victims’ charities. Normal people don’t steal money meant for those hurt by the attacks, pretend they toiled at Ground Zero or boast about themselves when talking about the horrific event. Normal people don't do any of this. This is not a normal person. These are not normal times. But normal people will rebuild after this disaster, too.

Focus on Bay Ridge

NORC status inspires seniors to fashion more proactive agenda

By Charles F. Otey

New NORC center on Third Avenue responds to our ‘aging in place’ population Outreach focus sessions highlight specific needs of thousands of resident retirees

For decades the Bay Ridge Center — known originally as the Bay Ridge Ovington Avenue Senior Center when it was founded almost four decades ago by the late Rev. Darrell Helmers, who is very ably succeeded today by Rev. Paul Knudsen — has been a vital force in the local community, recognizing since its inception that stable neighborhoods tend to develop a larger number of residents over the age of 60. These have lately become known as “NORCS,” or “Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities” — a phenomenon that Bay Ridge Center Executive Director Marianne Nicolosi, Deputy Director Todd Fliedner, focus group moderator Cathy King and others have recognized with the establishment of the new NORC center on Third Avenue. Fliedner was effusive in his praise for the focus team and noted that “the new storefront location ... will offer services and programs aimed at adults 60+. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and attendees expressed a strong pride in their community and an eagerness to make the changes needed to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.” In the open forum there were a number of points made about the usual problems like crime, sanitation and dangerous intersections, but there was a uniform expression of the solidarity of the Bay Ridge community. “We’re special. Here in Bay Ridge we really do have a community; we even have our local newspapers and a community council. But one thing we need now is a community center — a place where people

can hold meetings and maybe learn more of what is happening in Bay Ridge,” one speaker said. Another offered, “Maybe this [the NORC office] can be a community center.” All of the suggestions, including the oftenvoiced complaint of speeding bicyclists, were noted and will be made a part of the program “as our NORC center gets moving,” King said. Another speaker immediately intoned, “And we really need to beware of those new bike lanes. It’s hard to tell where it’s safe to cross. The bikers don’t pay attention to red lights and stop signs.” The NORC center, which a witty attendee said might be called “NORC by NORC-west” after the Cary Grant movie, hasn’t acquired an official name yet. How about Project NORC? Regardless, the satellite represents a significant and positive development because it is located on one of the busiest streets in Bay Ridge; it’s much more accessible and visible than the Ovington Avenue center. Among those welcoming the imminent NORC center opening was attorney Bob Howe, who serves as president of the Merchants of Third Avenue Business-Civic Association. “A lot of credit has to go to the center leaders,” Howe said. “Through this satellite they will ultimately reach thousands of passersby. At the same time their active presence will encourage our businesses to take greater cognizance of the vital role seniors play in the greater Bay Ridge community.”

In a series of successful focus group gatherings, officials at the Bay Ridge Center on Ovington Avenue have been honing in on the specific needs of older residents who compose a large and influential segment of the population here, identified by the fact that they are “aging in place.” A new NORC satellite office located at 7609 Third Ave., set to officially open later this month, hosted these recent gatherings. Shown here: NORC group members direct their attention to moderator Cathy King.

Third Ave. Pioneers’ Larry Morrish Award goes to our own Paula Katinas

Each year, the Merchants of Third Avenue holds its Annual Pioneer Reception, and the next reception is set for Nov. 12 at the Bay Ridge Manor. During the event, the group singles out outstanding businesses along the avenue and presents civic awards to recognize important volunteers throughout the broader community. A few years ago, with the passing of the late and irrepressible Larry Morrish, Merchants President Bob Howe and Pioneer Committee Co-Chair Lori Pedone announced a new award in his honor — the Larry Morrish Community Service Award. On Nov. 12, this prestigious honor will be given to journalist Paula Katinas, who has served as a reporter and an editor of these newspapers for more than 35 years. “Many people do not know that Larry was very press-savvy, so before going public with a new venture, another clean-up or charitable fundraiser, he would consult Paula, who has always had her finger on the pulse of the greater Bay Ridge community,” Howe said. “Over the years the stories writ-

ten and edited by Paula in a very real way tell the story of the remarkable Larry Morrish. It’s time we recognize the key role she played in understanding his good intentions and helping him bring them to fruition in the public eye.” In addition to the award to Paula, the Pioneer Committee, in keeping with tradition, will shortly announce the names and positions of those whose volunteer contributions will be underscored at this year’s event. The first Larry Morrish Community Service honoree was John Quaglione, who, in addition to having served on the staff of State Sen. Marty Golden, was a longstanding friend of the peripatetic Ridgeite who had been his longtime mentor.

Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (center) recently met with Ivanka Trump (right) and former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle to discuss her candidacy. Bay Ridge and Staten Island, is seeking to unseat Rose in the 2020 election in New York’s 11th Congressional District. The district covers the entire borough of Staten Island and takes in Southwest Brooklyn. Rose, a U.S. Army veteran, was elected to Congress in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Dan Donovan. Malliotakis was first elected to the Assembly in 2010. She ran for mayor

against Bill de Blasio in 2017 and lost. Malliotakis has met with major GOP figures like U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the House minority leader, and U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, a member of the House leadership team, to discuss her campaign to win a seat in Congress. She has also talked to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of President Donald Trump,

who is a senior advisor to the president. “I want to thank my contributors and campaign team for helping raise the funds necessary to be selected as ‘On the Radar,’ the important first step in being chosen as a member of the NRCC’s Young Guns program. In the first quarter, we surprised pundits and politicos alike when we raised more money than any Republican challenger in

the nation,” Malliotakis said. “Representative Max Rose needs to know that the voters of NY-11 are on to his charade of claiming to be a moderate when in the district, while all the time defending and supporting the words and actions of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Ilhan Omar and the other radical socialists who are taking over the Democrat Party. With the Young Gun designation, we’ll have

the resources to defeat him in next year’s election,” Malliotakis added. Rose wasn’t the least bit impressed by his opponent’s Young Gun status. “It’s no surprise that a former lobbyist like Nicole is so focused on getting approval from the DC establishment because people back home know she hasn’t accomplished a damn thing,” he said in a text message to the Home Reporter.
