Another recipient, Diaspora Community Services, at 921 East New York Ave., will receive $283,875 for its program to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS among young adults and members of the LGBTQ+ community. The After Hours Project, Inc., at 1204 Broadway, was awarded $524,670 for its program aimed at reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS in low income and minority neighborhoods. Several of the HHS grants announced by Velázquez were awarded to agencies and nonprofit organizations sponsoring Head Start and Early Head Start programs in their communities. Catholic Charities Neighborhood Services, headquartered in Brooklyn Heights, is getting $7.3 million for its Early Head Start program. It has been operating for more than 100 years and offers programs in English, Spanish and Creole. The YM & YWHA of Williamsburg, Inc., located at 64 Division Ave., has been awarded $2.4 million for its

Early Head Start program. HHS awarded $2.4 million to Yeshiva Kehilath Yakove, a learning center at 638 Bedford Ave., for its Head Start program “Time and time again, reports released from the Department of Health and Human Services underscore the lifetime social benefits of Head Start Programs and their impact on our youth. From testing significantly better in literature and math to showing better socialemotional, language and cognitive development, the value of Head Start programs is well documented. I am proud to see a wide range of local centers receive federal funding to continue the important work of educating our youngest New Yorkers,” Velázquez said.

Bay Ridge Victorian mansion demolished despite preservationist outcry BY LORE CROGHAN

LORE@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

A developer tore down a beloved Bay Ridge Victorian mansion, distressing neighborhood activists who hoped it could be saved. On Monday, all that was left of the house at 7604 Fourth Ave. was the front stoop and the wall surrounding the ground floor. Playground equipment from its days as Grace Nursery School stood in front of rubble and tornup trees. The stately turreted woodframe mansion housed a nursery school for two decades. Before that, it was the site of the Masonic Club for many years. Bay Ridge’s dwindling number of Victorian houses is a matter of deep concern to preservationists. “The wood-frame, turn-ofthe-century houses which contribute to the character of Bay Ridge are beginning to vanish,” Kelly Carroll, the Historic Districts Council’s director of advocacy and community outreach, told this paper. “There are several which are obvious candidates for individ-

ual landmark status, and a comprehensive survey documenting them is past due,” she said. Four weeks ago, the Bay Ridge Conservancy sounded the alarm about demolition plans for the mansion on the corner of Fourth Avenue and 76th Street. Conservancy President Victoria Hofmo said at that time the demolition threat was especially problematic because the mansion was located right next to a large property at 7614 Fourth Ave. that has been a vacant lot for several years. She had hoped the mansion could be renovated and used as a community cultural center, a school or a residence. Now that the demolition of the Victorian mansion is nearly complete, the entire Fourth Avenue block between 76th and 77th streets is bulldozed land except for one building, the United Korean Church of New York at 371 77th St. Hofmo said on Monday that she’s “deeply saddened” by the demolition of the mansion. “Was it in poor condition? No. Was it unusable?” Hofmo said. “No. It was greed, pure and simple.”

The demolition of the Victorian mansion at 7604 Fourth Ave. is nearly complete. On a plywood fence surrounding 7604 Fourth Ave., the developer has posted two renderings of a new residential building that’s planned for the site. Big windows punctuate its pale-hued facade. There are balconies on the corners of the

building. In the renderings, the height of the new building appears to be six stories topped by a penthouse. There appears to be groundfloor commercial space. One of the renderings shows an outdoor parking lot on the

property. An entity called Grace Holdings BK LLC bought the former nursery school and Masonic Club for $3.5 million in 2017, city Finance Department records indicate. Finance Department records

do not list the names of the people involved in the LLC. City Buildings Department records identify John Kordistos as an agent for Grace Holdings BK LLC. He did not respond to this paper’s request for comment on Monday.

Two-way bridge toll would bring $10-15 million to MTA, pols say BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

U.S. Rep. Max Rose (at podium) was joined by several elected officials at the press conference, all of whom spoke out in favor of bringing back two-way tolls on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Photo courtesy of Rose’s office

Bringing two-way tolls back to the VerrazzanoNarrows Bridge would have a big economic benefit that could wind up giving residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island better transit service, according to U.S. Rep. Max Rose, one of three lawmakers pushing legislation to scrap the span’s one-way toll system. Rose claims that reinstituting two-way tolls would provide the MTA, the agency that operates the city’s bridges and tunnels, with an additional $10-$15 million a year — money that would go toward

repairs and upgrades of the transit system. Under the current tolling system, motorists drive from Staten Island to Brooklyn for free, while drivers headed the other way pay the toll. With a two-way toll, motorists will no longer be able to circumvent the tolling system by driving eastbound for free and returning for free by avoiding the bridge on the way back, Rose said. “Staten Island and South Brooklyn have been used as a cheap thoroughfare for far too long,” Rose said. Two-way tolling would not lead to increased fares, but instead would split the

toll in half to be paid in both directions, Rose said. Without E-ZPass, the one-way toll is $19. Under a two-way toll, non E-ZPass mo-torists would pay $9.50 each way. Rose, a freshman Democrat who represents Staten Island and several neighborhoods in Southwest Brooklyn, held a press conference on Sunday with U.S. Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Nydia Velázquez, State Sen. Brian Kavanagh, Assembly Members Peter Abbate and Jo Anne Simon and Councilmembers Justin Brannan and Margaret Chin. Rose, Nadler and Velázquez are pushing legislation to reinstate the two-way toll, which was first implemented

Bay Ridge BID wins grant to boost mom-and-pop stores BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District has won a grant from the city’s Department of Small Business Services to continue its mission of revitalizing the strip which is largely composed of mom-andpop stores. SBS Commissioner Gregg Bishop announced on Thursday, April 25 that the BID was one of four communitybased development organizations around the city to be awarded grants under the

agency’s Avenue NYC initiative, a program designed to boost commercial areas in the five boroughs. “We’re thrilled!” BID Executive Director Amanda Zenteno told this newspaper shortly after the grants were announced. Basil Capetanakis, a member of the BID’s board of directors, said the board is pleased to win backing from the city. “Of course, we’re all excited. It’s a great thing,” he said. The BID will receive $100,000 a year for up to three

years. The BID, a public-private partnership of business and civic leaders, represents property owners, store owners and residents along the Fifth Avenue commercial corridor from 65th Street to 85th Street. There are 359 storefronts located within the BID’s catchment area. Each of the city’s business improvement districts was created through City Council legislation and operates under the jurisdiction of SBS. The Avenue NYC grant money will be used to fund two separate programs, according to Zenteno, who said

the first thing the BID will do is conduct a comprehensive study, called a commercial district needs assessment, of commercial areas of Bay Ridge. “It gives you a picture of what the needs are. It can also help you identify retail opportunities,” she said. The study will encompass all of the commercial areas in the neighborhood, not just Fifth Avenue. After the district needs assessment is complete, the BID will then decide what comes next. The funds could be spent

on merchant engagement programs, street enhancements or other special programs. But the second part of the grant will pertain only to Fifth Avenue. “We will get to decide what to move forward on,” Zenteno said. In addition to the Avenue NYC grant, the BID recently received a 360 Fellowship grant from SBS that will enable the group to bring in a representative to engage with merchants. “He will be out on the avenue talking to merchants every day,” Zenteno said.

under federal legislation in 1986. MTA Chairman Patrick Foye also attended the press conference and endorsed the two-way toll legislation. The MTA is committed to making investments in public transportation in Southern Brooklyn and Staten Island in its 2020-2024 Capital Plan, according to Foye. Nadler said two-way tolls will have benefits that go far beyond Staten Island and Southwest Brooklyn. “The restoration of toll collection in both directions, using electronic tolling that does not require stops at a toll plaza, will greatly improve traffic and congestion in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, while also capturing new vital funding for the MTA from out of state trucks, who no longer will avoid a toll entering New York City via Staten Island in order to escape the charges on the Hudson River Bridge and tunnel crossings,” Nadler said. Other factors, such as a reduction in air pollution and less wear and tear on local roadways are also reasons to support bringing back twoway tolls, according to Velázquez. Savino, a Democrat whose district includes neighborhoods on Staten Island and in Brooklyn said there is another benefit to a two-way toll: stress relief for frazzled drivers.

Police investigating a report of shots fired on Bay Ridge Parkway.

Authorities discovered human remains over the weekend near the Bay Ridge end of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. According to police, at around 8 a.m. on Saturday, officers were alerted to the partially clothed, skeletal remains, which were found in a wooded area near Fort Hill Place and Dahlgren Place, close to the Brooklyn-bound lower level exit ramp of the bridge. The remains have yet to be identified. The investigation is ongoing as authorities wait for the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. According to the New York Post, that same morning, NYPD Harbor Unit cops discovered a second body floating in the East River, near the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Back in March, two bodies were discovered in less than four days in the waters of Sunset Park.

BY JAN GROOVER Jan Groover created her famous Kitchen Still Lifes in 1978 and 1979. Using a large-format camera, she transformed colanders, knives, spatulas and baking pans into objects of beauty that still hold a visual interest that transcends their common use. Her seductively modern color palette of greens, pewter, bronze and brown tonalities permeates the space dissected by kitchen paraphernalia. These take on a new visual meaning as a result of Groover’s juxtaposition of the elements. Although never unrecognizable as everyday objects, these utensils float into an abstract amalgam of planes and shapes. When: Tuesdays-Sundays through May 11th, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Where: DUMBO/Janet Borden, Inc (91 Water Street)

THE OUTSKIRTS, EXPOSED AND PUNCHED A solo exhibition of new work by Odette England. This will be the artist’s second solo show at the gallery, and brings together a selection of artworks from three recently completed and ongoing projects. Home is the center-weight of England’s artistic practice, with memory and forgetting being the counterbalances. Her photographs are fragile, contemplative and temporal spaces. When: Wednesdays-Saturdays through May 11th, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Where: DUMBO/Klompching Gallery (89 Water Street)

THE 2018 FEATURE SHOOT EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS To celebrate the announcement of the 2018 Feature Shoot

RACE AND REVOLUTION: REIMAGINING MONUMENTS

The show questions the relationship between historical memory and historical monuments and what the underlying implications are for those histories that remain absent. Seventeen artists were asked to envision monuments that add depth and truth to New York’s compelling history. Exhibiting artists include Alexis Callender, Ayasha Guerin, Chip Thomas, Damien Davis, Emmaline Payette, Kamau Ware, Kimberly Becoat, Lyra Monteiro, Maureen Conner, Maureen McNeil, Marilyn Nance, Rose Desiano, Sal Munoz, Studio Darn, Zaq Landsberg and Jennifer Mack Watkins. When: Fridays through June 14th, 3 – 6 p.m. Where: Park Slope/Old Stone House (336 3rd Street)

ANTON ZOLOTOV: PLAYING WITH FIRE A solo show featuring the work of Anton Zolotov. Zolotov crafts a sprawling survey of misanthropy, isolation, and social rejection in the context of contemporary youth culture through intensive artistic studies of the ephemera of Kurt Cobain, the iconic vocalist of Nirvana. The artwork connects how these various elements of the dark side of modern adolescence relate to an ongoing roiling cycle of self-harm, addiction, and ultimately, premature self-destruction among marginalized young people today. When: Saturdays & Sundays through July 7th, 12 – 7 p.m. or by appt Where: Red Hook/Peninsula Art Space (352 Van Brunt Street)

DON’T FOLLOW THE WIND: NON-VISITOR CENTER Beyond the threshold of the inhabitable, how does culture contest the crippling effects of long term catastrophe? Don’t Follow the Wind is a project situated inside the radioactive Fukushima exclusion zone in Japan, the inaccessible area surrounding the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, established

in the wake of the 2011 disaster that contaminated the environment separating residents from their homes, land, and community. As radiation knows no borders, transported on wind and water currents, it is a form of contamination that implicates us all in its unseen isotopic presence. When: Tuesdays-Saturdays through July 13th, 12 – 6 p.m. Where: DUMBO/Art in General (145 Plymouth Street)

ONE: EGÚNGÚN One: Egúngún tells the life story of a twentieth-century Yorùbá masquerade dance costume (egúngún), from its origins in Ògbómọ, Nigeria, to its current home in Brooklyn. Composed of over three hundred textiles from Africa, Europe, and Asia, this egúngún swirls into motion during festivals honoring departed ancestors. Centuries old, egúngún is still practiced in Nigeria, the Republic of Benin, and in the Yorùbá diaspora. When: Daily through August 2019, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Where: Crown Heights/ Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway)

Eye on REAL ESTATE

Developer William M. Greve’s mausoleum is very grand.

Come see Green-Wood Cemetery’s cherry blossoms

There’s a really nice one where a walkway called Verdant Path intersects with Battle Avenue. If you photograph this tree facing up the hill, your image will include one of the quirkiest mausoleums in the cemetery.

You know spring has really arrived in Brooklyn when the cherry trees blossom beside INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan Green-Wood Cemetery’s landmarked gateway. It’s the tomb of pianist Alfred Ross Parsons and his wife Alice Schuyler Van Ness. They died in the early 1930s. Parsons was an Egyptologist. Their tomb is shaped like an ancient Egyptian pyramid. There’s a sphinx statue out front as well as

statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The Untapped Cities website included the Van Ness-Parsons mausoleum in a posting called “The Five Weirdest Tombs and Mausoleums at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.”

— Continued from page 10INB — You can step closer to the trees via a little walkway called Fir Path.

WILLIAM M. GREVE MAUSOLEUM You might get to the point where you’re weary of walking, no matter how fine the scenery. It would be a shame to stop strolling, though — because you’d miss William M. Greve’s mausoleum and the tremendous cherry blossoms that hang beside it. The tomb looks like a miniature Classical temple. It’s near the modern Hillside Mausoleum, which is close to the cemetery’s McDonald Avenue boundary. Did you know Greve was a developer? As the head of a company called Realty Associates, he built hundreds of bungalows in Gerritsen Beach in the early 1920s.

MINERVA, THE GODDESS OF BATTLE HILL I should mention that Green-Wood’s gates have strict closing hours. When the exits on Fort Hamilton Parkway and Prospect Park West are open, which is weekends and certain holidays, they’re locked up at 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., you’ll have to double back to the main entrance on Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. This time of year, the main entrance remains open until 7 p.m. One good way to get to the main entrance is to stroll on Border Avenue. After you walk for a while, turn onto Hemlock Avenue and find your way up onto Battle Hill. As of course you know, this piece of the cemetery is a key site of the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn. Frederick Wellington Ruckstull sculpted Battle Hill’s magnificent statue of Minerva, goddess of war, that commemorates the battle. The most known fact about Minerva is that she lines up perfectly with the Statue of Liberty down in the harbor. Minerva raises her hand in salute to Lady Liberty in a gesture that mirrors Lady Liberty’s gesture of holding up her torch. If you photograph Minerva in profile, you can include nearby cherry trees in the picture.

VAN NESS-PARSONS PYRAMID As you head down Battle Avenue towards Green-Wood’s main gates, you will see other blossoming cherry trees. You Should Know This Fun Facts About Mother’s Day

• In Greek mythology, spring festivals were held in honor of the maternal goddess Rhea. She was the wife of Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many deities. • In 1600s England, Mothering Sunday took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honor of the Virgin Mary. Afterward, children would present their mothers with flowers. • Anna Jarvis was the woman that may have been behind our traditional Mother’s Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Though she never had children of her own, she tirelessly campaigned for the day and on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Individuals • Corporations • Small Businesses All At Reasonable Rates

Do any of these sound familiar?

• In the United States alone, around 122 million phone calls are made to moms on Mother’s Day.

• Unhappy with results of last year's tax return? • Current accountant not taking your calls? • Receiving tax penalty & interest notices? • Tired of preparing your own tax return?

Nationwide Titles Plates . Registration ON THE SPOT PLATES Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from April 30, 1945 ON APRIL 30, 1939, the Eagle reported, “The infinite patience of a St. Albans youth is today demonstrated by the fact that when the silken cord is snipped at 11 a.m., officially opening the World’s Fair to the public for the first time, 20-year-old George Horn will have completed 39 hours waiting at the North Gate to be the first person admitted. Come what may, George’s determination has not been dampened despite the Fair folks who can’t see the humor of the situation and occasionally chase him away. Since 8 o’clock Friday night, young Horn has been camped at the North Gate to the exposition grounds on the Flushing Meadows. Fair police or no Fair police, his claim has been staked, he declares. They may chase him, but the moment the coast is clear he trots back to take up his vigil.”  ON APRIL 30, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Steeplechase Park, the oldest and largest amusement park in Coney Island, will begin its 45th season on Sunday at 1 p.m. Founded in 1896, the giant fun center is expected to have its greatest season as the park has acquired the gem of the late World’s Fair midway, the parachute jump.”  ON APRIL 30, 1945, the Eagle reported, “Paris, April 30 (U.P.) – The notorious Dachau concentration camp seven miles north of Munich – the first and blackest of the political death camps established in the early days of the Hitler regime – was overrun by the 7th Army yesterday. There the Yanks killed or captured 300 SS guards and liberated 32,000 political and religious prisoners who greeted their rescuers with hysterical joy. For hundreds and perhaps thousands of Dachau’s other inmates the Americans came too late. Fifty boxcars were found on a nearby railroad siding, loaded with bodies, torture chambers, gas boxes and other paraphernalia of terror that the Nazi guards were attempting to remove.”  ON APRIL 30, 1948, the Eagle reported, “Joe Pignatano, of 2612 W. 15th St., an 18-year-old catcher, has been signed by the Dodgers to a contract with the Cairo, Ill., club of the Kitty League by scout Art Dede. Pignatano is a graduate of Westinghouse Vocational High School.” Pignatano made his major league debut for the Dodgers in 1957, went west with the team when it moved to Los Angeles and was a member of the 1959 World Champions. He played for the Mets in 1962 and served as the bullpen coach for the 1969 championship team. He will celebrate his 90th birthday on Aug. 4.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from May 2, 1945 ON MAY 2, 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The greatest invasion of eels that has ever come to Brooklyn is causing any amount of trouble to the Department of Water Supply. In one day this week sixty-eight complaints about eels lodged in water pipes reached the office of the deputy commissioner. These complaints came from all parts of the borough. At first the residents of the Heights thought that the visitors were coming to them alone, but now from Williamsburg, Bushwick and many other sections word comes that the drinking water tastes ‘fishy,’ that the pressure is slow or stopped altogether, that hydraulic motors and pipes are clogged, and even that live eels are dangling from the faucets.”  ON MAY 2, 1932, the Eagle reported, “A group of visitors were being shown about the Columbia studios. ‘There’s Kate Smith,’ the proud page boy pointed to the song bird. ‘And there’s Alex Gray and Guy Lombardo and Ruth Etting. Over there is Eddie Dowling conversing with Helen Morgan. There’s Paul Robeson, too.’ ‘Yes,’ one of the bored tourists sighed as he flicked the ash from his cigarette, ‘but where are some of the celebrities?’”  ON MAY 2, 1945, the Eagle reported, “London, May 2 (U.P.) — The German high command admitted today that the survivors of Berlin’s garrison had been splintered into isolated fragments in the government district of the dying capital. Soviet reports said Red Army shock troops were storming the ramparts of the German chancellery, where the Nazis said Adolf Hitler died at a command post yesterday. The brevity and despair of a German communique’s report on Berlin indicated the Nazi command might be about ready to write off the capital. It said: ‘Remnants of the brave garrison of Berlin continue to fight doggedly in the government district, split up in isolated battle groups.’ … Red Army troops were converging from three directions on the spot where the German radio said Hitler went down at his command post and observers speculated whether the Russians would find Hitler’s body or some other evidence to support or refute the report of his death.”

This past Saturday, the final day of Passover, Chabad of Poway Synagogue in San Diego was attacked by a shooter who killed one and wounded three. One cannot make sense of any of this without bringing front and center the word hate. Murder by itself accounts for the most serious of all crimes, but murders that are preceded by the word hate are an especially evil form that is not just a mark on the murderer/terrorist but a mark on a larger piece of society. Hate is a cancer that if not addressed spreads. It needs to be challenged whenever it raises its ugly head. The

Bible teaches that evil exists. We know one form of evil as hate. It is important that we understand that sometimes evil and hate can only be contained. That containment comes in the form of efforts made by law enforcement. Recently, it has seemed to me that as evil and hate have spread, our elected officials have moved to weaken the containment system we have in place. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, murderers are inherently evil. In my view and in the view of most others, men who beat up woman are haters. Parole boards that release cop killers and legislators who introduce bills to turn back life without parole as reviewable when the convict turns 55 are working

to undermine society’s containment system of those who have acted in the most hateful of manners. *** The Yankees looked foolish banning Kate Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America” from being sung during the seventh inning stretch or for that matter in any manner in Yankee Stadium. In the early part of her career, Smith did perform two songs that today would be considered unacceptable. She also raised hundreds of millions of dollars to fight the Nazis and the Japanese during World War II. And when she was not raising funds in support of the war effort, she was raising funds for many charities. Kate Smith in so many

It’s a shame the Yankees can only see a mistake that, in comparison to the Yankees’ support of segregated baseball, seems very minor. ast Friday, President Trump once again defended his remarks made days after the deadly white nationalist violence in Charlottesville that there were “very fine people on both sides,” chalking it up to people who simply “felt very strongly about the monument to Robert E. Lee.” To be clear, those who marched through Charlottesville under Confederate and Nazi flags, chanting “Jews will not replace us,” were not there primarily for a statue. But these Confederate monuments are powerful symbols, which is why white supremacists rallied around preserving one to General Lee. Here in Brooklyn we have been involved in this same debate. The week after the events of Charlottesville, local protesters rekindled demands that the U.S. Army

rename General Lee Avenue in the Fort Hamilton Army Base. St. John’s Episcopal Church, a stone’s throw from the base where Lee was once stationed, removed a commemorative plaque to him that same week. Any arguments made as to why these relics should remain simply do not hold water. People do not visit statues or street signs to learn about history. We have museums, libraries and Google for that. Monuments are intended to honor historic figures, but Lee was dishonorable, both as an American and as a human being. After serving in the United States Army for decades, Lee chose to commit treason and take up arms against his country — OUR country — for the purpose of preserving the right to own people. He commanded a seditious army in a war that

We actually do have monuments to the most famous traitor in our nation’s history, Benedict Arnold. At West Point, among plaques recognizing all the war's generals, the one for him is nameless. In Groton, Connecticut, a monument to the victims he slaughtered there refers to him as “Traitor Benedict

banning the Yankees from Citi Field? Actually, that would be dumb! Banning Kate Smith is also dumb. *** As a guest of the Connors and Sullivan Law Firm, I attended the Kings County American Legion’s 25th annual dinner in support of American Legion baseball. The packed event was held at Gargiulo’s Catering Hall. There were a number of excellent honorees, but I would like to highlight Frank Naccarato, currently vice president of the Federation of Italian American Organizations. Frank, whom I have known for a number of years, has been a constant

positive presence in our community. In addition to his support for many American Legion causes, Frank and Jack Spatola, FIAO’s longtime board chair, were more than any two people responsible for the creation of il Centro, an Italian American cultural center at 87th Street and 18th Avenue which is open to all. Literally tens of thousands of young people have enjoyed coming through American Legion baseball and other American Legion sports in the past 25 years. I very much enjoyed catching up with old friends and I wish the American Legion continued success.

claimed 620,000 American lives, nearly 20,000 of whom were New Yorkers. The United States Army suffered more than 150,000 casualties in battles led by General Lee.

COMMON SENSE

BY JAY BROWN

Arnold.” Rockland County has a monument at the location where he agreed to sell out his country, labeled “Treason Site.” Lee had actually opposed the idea of southern secession, but he was so committed to preserving the cruel institution of slavery, he did not hesitate in committing treason. And all accounts prove that he was truly cruel. He ended his family’s long tradition of respecting slave families. He was found in court to have violated a previous slave-owner’s will by not freeing slaves he was required to. He wrote that slavery was good for black

people because it gave them the “painful discipline… necessary for their instruction as a race.” His inhumanity extended beyond his own slaves. His army enslaved free blacks and brought them back to the south as property. Soldiers under his command massacred black Union soldiers who tried to surrender. Lee was a white supremacist, which is why the white supremacists of the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras, decades after the Civil War, erected most of the monuments that bear his name. That is why white supremacists today fight to preserve statues that honor him. This shouldn’t be a debate. We should all be outraged

that in our own backyard, here in the north no less, a street bears the name of man who brutalized slaves, killed unfathomable numbers of American servicemen, and espoused white supremacist ideology. We should be renewing efforts to call for the street to be renamed. Given he only reached the rank of Colonel during his tenure in the U.S. Army, perhaps what is most galling is that the street on Fort Hamilton base is named General Lee Avenue. Being that it wasn’t until his time in the Confederacy that he rose to the rank of general, our own military is literally recognizing the particular portion of Lee’s career spent killing American soldiers.

BID grant to aid mom-and-pops on Fifth Avenue

Also good news for BID in formation on Third Ave.

There’s good news for beleaguered momand-pop stores within the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, as the city’s Department of Small Business Services is making a substantial grant available to the BID. This cash advance, totaling $100,000 per year, is also good news for the Merchants of Third Avenue, under the leadership of President Bob Howe, who is working hard and effectively to establish a small store-sustaining BID strip along the home of Brooklyn’s “Restaurant Row.” This proactive thoroughfare is the site of the very popular Friday night Summer Stroll on 3rd program, which annually draws thousands of strollers from all parts of Brooklyn and beyond, as well as many other family-friendly ventures. “The $100,000 grant going to the Fifth Avenue BID is a good example of how the city continues to actively support BID programs throughout the city,” a well-placed source told us. “BIDs are legally and politically positioned to collect operational assessments and to benefit directly from grants such as this one, which is earmarked to support mom-and-pop stores that are being driven out of existence by internet mail-order giants such as Amazon.” Home Reporter writer Paula Katinas reported that, according to Small Business Commissioner Gregg Bishop, the Fifth Avenue BID “was one of four communitybased development organizations around the city to be awarded grants under the agency’s Avenue NYC initiative — a program designed to boost commercial areas in the five boroughs.” Third Avenue, as it is well known in Bay Ridge, is one of the most civic-minded business

The Third Avenue Festival, led by Chip Cafiero, has for more than four decades been luring hundreds of thousands of potential shoppers — and new residents — onto the avenue each fall. “A Third Avenue BID will enable the continuation of these many community-friendly endeavors that have helped define Bay Ridge as the city’s leading volunteer community,” our source said. “Perhaps as important, under a fairly financed BID, Third Avenue could develop a modern interactive web operation, which would become a new and inspirational lifeline for hundreds of businesses by linking them with thousands of shoppers on a daily — almost an hourly — basis! “We know that Amazon didn’t pay its fair share; it operated for years without paying any meaningful local taxes. It’s ironic that where Amazon got a free ride, our local businesses are still hit day by day with some of the highest taxes anywhere in the U.S. A BID would help — at least a little — to level the playing field for local business owners and their thousands of employees.”

organizations in the city. Under Howe, CoTreasurer Brian Chin and fellow officers Jay Sessa, Lloyd Berg, Sheila Brody and Wade Jabour, the Merchants of Third Avenue organization has spearheaded various initiatives, including the Verrazano Lifeway Campaign, the Gowanus Tunnel, and the creation of a two-way toll for vehicles using the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to stop the highway robberies that take place when thousands of northbound trucks use the toll-free bridge entrance on Staten Island to exit the city without paying a penny.

Memorial Day Parade Committee Chair Ray Aalbue with this year’s parade Grand Marshal Marty Golden. ebrooklyn media/Photo by Arthur de Gaeta Veteran newspaper columnists are never averse to quoting the words of another journalist to further a point; in this instance we’re lifting from Facebook the remarks of the legendary Ray Aalbue concerning the planning and inevitable success of the recent Memorial Day Parade fundraising effort: Aalbue didn’t ask to have his words put on the printed paper page, but much of what he put on Facebook bears repeating wherever possible because he relates the dedicated efforts of our volunteers, veterans and civic leaders as we all get ready for the highly anticipated Memorial Day Parade, set to kick off on Third Avenue on May 27. Without further ado, here’s what Aalbue wrote: “First and foremost, I want to thank the 2019 Memorial Day Parade Committee. They all get overlooked in all the posts on Facebook and in the paper. Memorial Day is not just a day for these folks. They live Memorial Day all year round. They start planning for the next parade about two weeks after the last parade with one very important goal: to remember all those who paid such a terrible price in service to our country and [to] honor their families who must endure that loss. This community owes them a debt of gratitude for keeping the memory of so many alive. It’s so easy to forget. I applaud Prisco DeAngelis, Connie and Joe Ranocchia, Barry and Irene Berger, Dyan Berger, Cary Spickler, Lonnie Delon and Ted General. Mission accomplished…until next time. “It was a great day at Patsy’s Pizzeria, where the ninth annual Memorial Day Parade fundraiser was held. Thanks to Jackie and Joe, and the staff at Patsy’s, for allowing us to invade their beautiful place and use it as our foxhole for the day. It could not have been a better venue. And the bands … wow … right from the start when Whippoorwill stroked the first chord, I knew it was going to be a memorable and unforgettable event. “The Canny Brothers were first class as usual, followed by the always popular Pepe Cardona and his son Tim, the Alive ’N Kickin’ Duo. To stir up the crowd, ShaDoobie hit the stage, making the Rolling Stones proud, and then Eddie Sarkis and Head ’N South brought it all home. “So much talent. Bay Ridge couldn’t have

asked for a better lineup. And who put this together? Cathy Santopietro, who put her heart and soul into making sure the day was a success. And once again, Bay Ridge came out in force to support Brooklyn’s 152nd Memorial Day Parade. Patsy’s was crowded all day. Great job. “We really appreciate Casa Calamari, Chadwick’s, Greenhouse Café, Hunter’s, Greenwood Park, Pipin’s Pub, Salty Dog, Tuscany Grill, Cebu, Ho’Brah, Kettle Black, Circles Café, New Corner, Tanoreen, Patsy’s Pizzeria and Wicked Monk for their very generous gift certificates for the raffle. Couldn’t do it without you! “Our Councilman Justin Brannan stopped by with a check to help fund the parade, and our Congressman Max Rose, who is a veteran, said a few words to the crowd on the importance of Memorial Day. The grand marshal for the 152nd parade, former State Sen. Marty Golden, stopped by with his wife Colleen. “This fundraiser was held to support and sustain a parade that honors all who died in service to our country and their families. Come out to the parade on May 27, 2019. Led by our Grand Marshal Marty Golden, it kicks off at 11 a.m. on Third Avenue and 78th Street, and runs along Third Avenue to Marine Avenue, up to Fourth Avenue and over to John Paul Jones Park, where we hold a memorial service immediately following the parade to pay our respect to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. “Please come to the memorial service. This year we have the 369th Experience, a recreation of the 369th Regimental Band of the Harlem Hellfighters. The band is part of a series of events endorsed by the World War I Centennial Commission and sponsored in part by the Coca Cola Foundation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I. In its original form, the band [was composed] of 65 African-American and Puerto Rican gentlemen who charmed the hearts and minds of Americans and Europeans. They will be the lead band in the parade and perform at the memorial service. “On behalf of the United Military Veterans of Kings County Parade Committee, we salute you all. Lest we forget.”

OBITUARIES

SUSANTO, Iwan — Passed away on April 18. Iwan lived a rich and fulfilled life. He was first and foremost a family man. He never hesitated to give what he had to his family. Iwan was devoted to his wife and children. He loved them unconditionally and always put them first. Iwan was the definition of a successful man. He raised his three daughters to become strong and independent women. Iwan was also a great friend. He genuinely cared for those in his life. He did whatever he could to help, whether it was to give advice or just to be there to listen. He always encouraged everyone around him to be the best version of themselves, whether it was his family at home, his friends, his coworkers or just an acquaintance in his life. He often shared his personal experiences to help others find their path. Some may not know his life story, a story of perseverance and determination. From a young age, Iwan was a daring and adventurous man. He travelled around the world by himself with no fear. He was never afraid to go and live in a new place, even when he did not speak the language. He lived in Holland and Los Angeles, and almost moved to Hawaii before he ultimately made the decision to move to New York. In New York, he met Rosiana, got married, and started a family. His family became his whole world. He did everything he could to provide for them. He always cooked and cared for his children. At times, he worked two full-time jobs to provide for his wife and daughters. Every single day, he worked hard and sacrificed to provide them with the best opportunities in life. And most of all, he taught his daughters to be like him, to be fearless and to fight for their dreams. Iwan was only one year

from retirement and was finally ready to enjoy what he had worked so hard for. He and his family had plans to buy a house together, where he would have his very own enormous kitchen, where he could cook all his family’s favorite foods while listening to the Rolling Stones. Knowing that his daughters were all grown up, he was also ready to start the next chapter in his life. Kind, generous, selfless and loving are only some of the words that describe Iwan. He had a big heart and always had the best intentions. The smallest moments together made him the happiest. He touched many lives and through each person he touched, he will continue to have a lasting impact through the years. All services arranged by Clavin Funeral Home.

PRAYER TO SAINT EXPEDITE

Most glorious martyr and blessed protector St. Expedite! Overlooking our demerits and based solely on your attainments and in the most precious blood of Jesus, we humbly ask that you bring us the ability to possess a humble faith, to perform abundant good works and to show fruits leading to everlasting life. Make our hope string and unwavering, even amid toils and bitter penury. Make us have an ardent charity that each day feeds our divine love. Make us see in each other a true image of our Good God. Let our words, thoughts, and actions reflect our constant search for the glory of God; may we never stray from the teachings of our Holy Mother, the Church, that we may always see in the Supreme Pastor the representative of Jesus Christ on Earth; we beg you to bring us from the Lord serene, calm days for our Mother Church, fortuitous days for our country, may the sick find healing for their maladies, may the infidel find the saving grace of the Holy Gospel, may those who leave this valley of tears find the joy of Christ’s embrace, and may the souls of our dead find rest in everlasting peace. Finally, oh glorious martyr, make it possible for the Lord to give us loyalty to Jesus here and when we reach the sweet bye and bye, Amen. (Ask for your boon now.) Right after this prayer, say three Our Fathers and three special Glorias as follow: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and the Holy Spirit; may they give power to St. Expedite so he may grant me what I want fast.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail) O, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, Splendor of Heaven Blessed Mother, of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O, Star of the Sea help me and show me, herein you are my mother. O, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. (Make Request) There are none that can withstand your power. O, show me herein you are my mother. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3X). O Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3X). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3X). Thank you for your mercy to me and mine. Amen. This prayer must be said for three days and after three days your request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Grateful thanks.

St. Anselm Angels make a splash BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM

T

he St. Anselm Angels celebrated a winning season, coming in second competing against teams from all over Brooklyn and Queens. The school has two teams, a girls’ team and a boys’ team, with over 200 swimmers in total with ages ranging from six to 14 in first grade through ninth grade. Ted Ghorra coaches the teams along with January Mark. Brian Doherty and Nancy Ngai serve as assistant coaches. “We swim as part of the CYO league’s competitive program,” Ghorra told this paper. “Our boys finished at the top of the Brooklyn division teams and qualified and

competed in the Division A championships,” continued Ghorra, who has been coaching for nine seasons. “Our girls finished their winning season placing second in the championship overall. We currently have 108 girls and 94 boys on the teams.” The girls’ awards ceremony took place on April 11 at the Fort Hamilton High School pool. The team celebrated coming in second place overall at Nassau Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The winning team was the FLUKES, a combined team from Holy Family, Flushing and St. Luke’s, Whitestone. All 14 graduating teammates from St. Anselm received an award for individual recognition. “Two of my three daughters have been through this program,” said Doherty,

Assistant Coach Nancy Ngai, Coaches Ted Ghorra and January Mark and Assistant Coach Brian Doherty.

The St. Anselm Angels girls’ swim team lines up along the diving board at the awards ceremony. who has been coaching for 10 seasons. “My older one graduated from this program last year. The great thing about the CYO program is that it’s intramural — you’re swimming against other parishes — but the format of the swim program allows you to have a team that has 15 swimmers or a team that has 150 and they just work it into different heats. Everybody gets a chance to swim so our program is gigantic.” Ghorra’s three daughters all compete on the girls’ swim team and his son participates on the boys’ team. “This swim program is more than just about swimming,” said Ghorra. “It’s about life, it’s about discipline, it’s about self-respect
