Could ‘Fair Fares’ draw more riders — without clogging the MTA?

A new report from Boston shows that reducing fares for low-income straphangers significantly increases their ridership.

The report comes as New York City slowly rolls out its “fair fares” program, which has now enrolled over 50,000 New Yorkers to receive halfprice MetroCards.

“The study shows what we already knew: Reducing fares works,” said Danny Pearlstein, the policy and communications director at transit advocacy group Riders Alliance.

“New York has a large low-income population, and the rising degree of inequality is growing that number,” said Pearlstein. “Rent, medicine, food, clothing, all this competes with paying for transit for people.”

The MIT study conducted in Boston found that low-income riders given transit discounts rode public transit 30

percent more than low-income riders paying full price.

It also found that many of the additional rides were used for trips to access health care and social services.

Jeffrey Laurence Rosenblum, the urban planning Ph.D. candidate who conducted the study, gave halfpriced CharlieCards — the Boston equivalent to New York’s MetroCard — to people receiving SNAP benefits.

“Studying the habits of low-income riders really hasn’t been done that much,” said Rosenblum. “Nobody was in agreement with what reduced fares really accomplish.”

Opponents of reduced fares have argued that low-income riders don’t ride the subway any less because people are forced to bear fare hikes to get where they need to go. Rosenblum’s study disproves this.

sorbed into the current transit system without much friction.

Pearlstein, who worked with the Riders Alliance to champion the fair fares pro-

gram, explained why access to transit is so important for the health of the city.

“As housing costs rise, and people are scattered across the city, transit is a social lifeline,” said Pearlstein.

“It connects people to their community, family and civic institutions.”

The city has moved too slowly, according to many advocates, to extend discounted fares to eligible New Yorkers. Since the program began in January, just over 50,000 participants have been enrolled out of what Pearlstein estimates are around 700,000 eligible people.

Pearlstein hopes the city will continue to expand the program to all eligible New Yorkers.

“There are so many different aspects to creating equity in an urban environment; transit is one of the most important.” said Pearlstein. “This program is crucial to the life of our city and the progressive vision of New York.”

As a rapper might explain it: "Big brother not just watching, he's billing.”

The number of automated enforcement cameras catching motorists illegally driving in dedicated bus lanes is set to increase after the state legislature voted last Thursday to remove previous limits on their use in New York City.

The paperwork is just another state law, but the impact gives a boost to public transit and the government more enforcement power.

State law limited camera enforcement to just 16 routes across the city, but the new legislation allows for 24/7 enforcement wherever bus lanes are in effect.

Riders have long complained that without enforcement, buses get snarled in traffic, causing straphangers to endure longer commutes. New York City buses are the slowest in the United States, averaging only 8 miles per hour.

“I’m thrilled to know the MTA can now use automated cameras to enforce bus lanes citywide,” Riders Alliance member Debbie Baldwin said in a statement. “This will help millions of working-class bus riders get where they need to go on time. With full authorization to enforce bus lanes, the city now needs to follow through and paint more bus lanes and give riders priority on our streets.”

The legislation also increases the penalty

for repeat offenders, stepping up the fines for each violation within a 12-month period. A first offense is $50, while the second is $100.

They continue to increase by $50 per offense, up to $250. Revenue from that enforcement will go toward the New York City Transportation Assistance Fund.

Assemblymember Nily Rozic and State Sen. Liz Krueger sponsored standalone bills in their respective houses, though it was ultimately passed as part of a larger legislative package at the end of session.

“Public transit is the lifeblood of NYC and the entire region,” Krueger wrote on Twitter following the bill’s passage in the Senate.

“Buses are integral to that system. But w/out camera enforcement, dedicated bus lanes are just so many painted lines. Albany shouldn’t prevent NYC from deploying the tools to improve bus service and reduce congestion.”

Innovation economy needs ‘accessibility’ to grow in B’klyn Continued from page 1

conference on Brooklyn’s growing “innovation economy.”

Though Brooklyn lags behind Manhattan in the sheer number of tech and creative start-ups, the growth of innovative companies here — a whopping 155 percent over the last decade — outpaces their growth in Manhattan and most other cities. Maintaining that growth was the topic of the first panel, moderated by Jonathan Bowles, executive director of Center for an Urban Future.

Feeding the start-up flames is the fact that Brooklyn is “diverse, dense, dynamic and has direct access to Manhattan,” said James Patchett, president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

More than 200 languages are spoken in Brooklyn, and it’s the second densest city in the country.

For many, it was about real estate.

“Real estate and floor plates [leasable space on an individual floor] are available here,” Jessie Lazarus, head of Mobility Business Development for CARMERA told the crowd. (CARMERA creates real-time maps and navigation data for autonomous vehicles.)

“DUMBO, the Navy Yard, Industry City have the type of space that technology wants,” EDC’s Patchett said.

The sheer number of people and their density, enabling a large number of creative collisions, was cited

by Thomas Rush, head of platform and labs at ConsenSys, a blockchain technology company.

“The talent is here — directors, producers,” said Pete Abel, CEO of AbelCine, which rents professional filmmaking equipment for TV shows, films, commercials and other productions.

The stumbling blocks Higher real estate prices could drive out creative types, and that’s a problem, panel members said. Before the technology wave, areas like DUMBO were settled by artists, manufacturers and recording companies.

“If we don’t think of how important creativity is … then the jobs leave the area,” Abel said. “We take it for granted how magical Brooklyn is. Creativity is key. Creators will move to an area they can afford.”

And Brooklyn gets harder as you get older, said Blue State Digital’s head of Tech Consulting, Mike Conlow.

Conlow, who has two children, says too many public schools are still struggling in Brooklyn. While some individual schools are outstanding, “The city needs to raise the quality of all public schools.”

Gazette photo by Mary Frost Another stumbling block is transportation. While numerous subway lines come to Downtown Brooklyn, the transit system is “designed to funnel people into Manhattan. The transportation system is not set up to bring you from Bay Ridge to Crown Heights,” Patchett said.

CARMERA’s Lazarus said the “last-mile connection challenge” was an issue, and the city should help build a “multi-modal” last-mile solution.

Able added that his company, based in Sunset Park, also wrestled with the “infrastructure of the commute.”

“Not everyone can hop on the D train. They have gear,” he said.

Talent, talent, talent One of the biggest drawbacks mentioned by participants was finding enough trained talent.

“We can’t get enough computer engineers,” Lazarus emphasized. While CARMERA had to look elsewhere, she feels there’s “untapped potential” in Brooklyn. The city needs to “invest in K-12, STEM and workforce development,” she said.

ConsenSys’ Rush said the company had to look to Berlin and San Francisco to find enough developers with expertise in Solidity (a computer language for smart contracts).

EDC’s Patchett, however, said that often employers

“are not looking at the talent base from Brooklyn” because they’re focusing on people “who look like them.” Descriptive words like “smart and thoughtful” in want ads often signal “Ivy League school,” he said.

“You have to be intentional about where you’re recruiting,” Lazarus said. Of CARMERA’s 20 employees in the city, five are CUNY grads, and they are “some of our best computer vision engineers,” she said. “Some of the problem is employers get lazy. Hiring is hard. It’s a long pipeline and it starts in pre-K and goes to CUNY. “ The Center’s partners in the symposium — Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, DUMBO Improvement District, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and Industry City — recently commissioned a study on Brooklyn’s innovation economy.

“We asked the Center for an Urban Future to put together some of the statistics around the growth and highlight some the of the success stories, and also convene a discussion about how do we make it more accessible,” Andrew Kimball, CEO of Industry City, told the Greenpoint Gazette.

Spreading the benefits Kimball said that people attending the symposium want to know, “How do we make it equitable, and as widespread as possible?

Make sure that folks who have lived in Brooklyn for many decades, through the good and the bad, are benefiting as much as possible?”

That question was the focus of the second panel, moderated by Eli Dvorkin, editorial and policy director at Center for an Urban Future.

Adetoro Adegbola, program manager of diversity and inclusion at Etsy, said there are entry points at the company that don’t require advanced degrees, especially among vendors and contractors, as well as in the marketing and workplace facilities departments.

Jack Simon, resale manager at Revivn, an electronics recycling company, praised the employment center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, calling it a “personalized Monster.com.”

Faith Corbett, assistant vice president of public affairs and partnerships at CUNY’s City Tech, said that City Tech has been giving students the skill sets employers want, and partnering with outside companies.

“We can’t undo what happened in K-12. What we can do is stack our programs. To our two-year degree, we added a four-year degree.”

Students can take a fifth year while they’re working, she said. CUNY has also partnered with Microsoft and other companies on six-week to four-month training in specific skill sets. But CUNY runs a lean program, she lamented.

Quardean Lewis-Allen, founder of Made in Brooklyn, said kids in neighborhoods like Brownsville, where he is located, have extra barriers to success.

“They lack a network, have a poor educational system, lack mentorship that looks like [them]. They come to us discouraged,” he said.

Participants recommended investment in workforce development, vocational training, apprenticeships and embedding schools right inside companies.

They also said the city had to deal with the literacy crisis.

“Be intentional,” was frequently mentioned.

“I wish people would recruit from these neighborhoods like they do for the NBA,” said Darryle Hawes, machine operations manager at M Factory.

Isles are ‘Half-In’ for Brooklyn in 2019-20 Team announces split-site home schedule for second straight year

The New York Islanders announced Wednesday that they would continue their unorthodox dual-arena scheduling for the 2019-20 season, marking the second straight campaign in which the Brooklyn/Long Island-based franchise would be splitting its home schedule in half.

The Barclays Center, where the Islanders went 12-6-2 during the 2018-19 regular season before dropping a pair of games to Carolina at the Downtown arena during the Eastern Conference semifinals, will host 20 of the team’s 41 home dates.

NYCB Live, better known as the Nassau Coliseum, will pick up the other 21 dates, including the Oct. 4 season opener against the Washington Capitals and the regular-season finale April 4 vs.

New Jersey.

The Isles went 12-7-2 in Uniondale, N.Y, last season.

They also beat the Pittsburgh Penguins twice on Long Island during the opening round of the playoffs en route to completing a stunning four-game sweep.

Though the team ranked last in attendance on the 31-team NHL circuit at a paltry 12,442 fans per contest last season, the games at the “Old Barn” were certainly better attended considering the renovated arena’s modest capacity (just under 14,000 seats).

But the Coliseum’s lack of luxury suites kept it from hosting more than just the first round of the playoffs, especially in the wake of the league’s harsh announcement that the arena “does not qualify as an NHL major league facility.”

Apparently, it still qualifies enough to host the majority of home dates until the Isles get their dream facility built adjacent to the legendary Belmont Racetrack in Elmont, N.Y., a project that co-owner Jon Ledecky claimed was still very much “on track” despite the lack of even the earliest signs of construction as yet.

“I’m very confident that’s where we will be playing our games in the 2021-22 season,” Ledecky told Newsday back in May as the proposed site was undergoing a lengthy environmental review stage.

Even if the first shovel in the ground occurs before the end of this year, the Isles will likely continue their two-arena split into the 2020-21 season before moving into their state-of-the-art Belmont facility the following year.

This past season, there were rumblings that the Isles may move into the Coliseum full-time until the Belmont arena is erected and fully operational.

But the Commissioner’s Office nixed that with its pre-playoff proclamation regarding the facility’s lack of “major league” quality.

So, it’s likely going to be half-in for Brooklyn for the next two years, and perhaps beyond if there are more delays to the start of construction in Elmont.

better,” Isles Head Coach Barry Trotz said of Barclays Center during last season’s playoffs.

“The only difference is a little bit of convenience and we’ll take that out. That won’t be a big deal.”

New York’s first home game in our fair borough next season will be on Sunday, Oct. 6 vs. Winnipeg.

The Isles will play three games in a row at Barclays Center from Nov. 5-9, highlighted by a Nov. 7 encounter with Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.

The Barclays Center was in full throat for last season’s second-round playoff series against Carolina. The Downtown Brooklyn arena will host 20 of the Islanders’ 41 home games during the 2019-20 season, the team announced Wednesday.

The Isles will host both of their home games against the Rangers in Brooklyn on Jan. 16 and Feb. 25, respectively.

That bit of scheduling might have something to do with the fact that the East River rival Blueshirts have lost in all but one of their first eight visits to the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues.

The team will also host a pair of 1 p.m. matinees in Brooklyn on Saturday Nov. 9 vs. Florida and Saturday Feb. 1 against Vancouver.  While Isles general manager and team president Lou Lamoriello is doubtlessly still in the process of trying to secure the services of free-agent-to-be goaltender Robin Lehner and team captain Anders Lee, he did his best to boost the Isles’ roster during last weekend’s NHL Draft.

Lamoriello, who was seeking offensive help for a team that ranked 22nd in goals scored last season, selected Swedish forward Simon Holmstrom with the 23rd overall pick in the opening round.

“Our scouts were extremely high on him, where we had him rated,” Lamoriello said of Holmstrom, an 18-year-old right-winger who averaged just over a point per game in Sweden’s SuperElit League.

“It was unanimous with them, that if he was going to be there at that point, we were going to take him,” added Lamoriello.

Holmstrom has dealt with thumb and hip injuries, limiting him to just 50 games over the last two years, but Lamoriello insisted that the Isles’ staff gave him a clean bill of health entering the draft.

“If doctors feel there are no issues, then you go with that if it’s the best player,” Lamoriello said. “If there are any concerns, you don’t do it.”

Jack Adams Award-winning Head Coach Barry Trotz noted prior to the draft that the Isles were certainly lacking in scoring punch last season despite boasting the best goals-against average in the league.

He was also pleased with the organization’s pick.

“What our scouts are saying is that he’s got a really good release, lots of quickness, real good hockey IQ,” Trotz said. “When you’re watching him and [Mathew] Barzal walking together, hopefully they’ll play together some day.”

Barzal, whom Holmstrom named as a player he looked up to, was in attendance in Vancouver for the draft, and will likely be skating alongside the NHL neophyte when the Isles conduct their summer mini-camp on Long Island this week.

“It’s was pretty great [to meet Barzal]. He’s a great guy,” Holmstrom said after slipping on his Orange-and-Blue jersey for the first time Friday night. “[He] was looking at my game and he really enjoyed it. I enjoy his game as well.”

At 6-foot-1 and just under 200 pounds, Holmstrom believes his path to the NHL will be hastened by bulking up a bit, both this summer and going forward.

“I think I need to work a lot in gym,” he humbly ceded. “They are men and I’m still just a little boy. Hopefully, I’ll be a man soon and hopefully have more strength in my legs and in my skating.”

News Around the Boro BAY RIDGE — Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-Southern Brooklyn-Staten Island) last week applauded State Senate Democrats for pulling the Automatic Voter Registration Bill after finding a critical typo in the measure that would have forced non-citizens to register despite their ineligibility. The measure would have enabled agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Office of Children and Family Services, the Department of Health, the Department of Veterans Services and the Department of Labor to register residents to vote automatically. Malliotakis protested the passage of the bill, calling it the “Automatic Voter Fraud” bill. 

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Police have released video footage of a Citi Bike-riding gunman who shot a 24-yearold man and a 23-year-old woman in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The suspect was allegedly cruising on his bike heading eastbound at Lexington Avenue and Tompkins Avenue on June 7 when he took out his firearm and shot six rounds, striking both victims in the legs, according to police. Cops are not sure whether they were the gunman’s intended victims. 

BROWNSVILLE — A retired police officer was stabbed on Sunday night during an apparent road rage incident in Brownsville, according to the New York Post. A confrontation took place near Alabama and Livonia avenues, and the retired officer was stabbed in the arm. He is expected to be okay. The attacker was taken into custody, police said. 

CANARSIE — A Brooklyn writer is making his directorial debut with a film being shot partially at Egoli Barbershop on Seaview Avenue in Canarsie, according to News 12.

Moise Morancy’s “When a Tree Falls” focuses on a character named Calvini, who is played by Morancy, who finds out his stepfather is a drug dealer. Morancy said some of the actors are from the neighborhood, and the film addresses many issues in the black community. Morancy has had acting roles on “SVU’ and “Blue Bloods.” 

CONEY ISLAND — The Brooklyn Historical Society will partner with the Brooklyn Cyclones for the minor-league team’s home game against the West Virginia Black Bears on July 13. CROWN HEIGHTS — Someone placed a noose outside a Brooklyn church last weekend in what is being probed as a possible bias crime, according to the New York Post. The noose, a symbol of black people being lynched in the South, was found Saturday on bushes outside the United House of

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A three-story, early 20th century building in Downtown Brooklyn with terra-cotta figures may be replaced by a 23-story tower, according to Curbed. The building, at 308-310 Livingston St., was built in 1911. In October, architecture firm Fogarty Finger filed an application to build a 23-story building, and in May the firm filed another application for full demolition. The current building was once used as a meeting place for followers of the Bahai religion. The new building would have 160 units, a rooftop deck and a fitness center. 

EAST FLATBUSH — Brownstoner recently looked back at four of the real-estate website’s featured Brooklyn listings from six months ago, focusing on homes in East Flatbush, Windsor Terrace and Ditmas Park. A two-story brick row-

house in East Flatbush sold in May for $665,000, which was $44,000 below the asking price. A fifth-floor co-op in Brooklyn Heights, which has four rooms and views of trees and neighboring gardens, sold for $1.31 million, $60,000 above the asking price. Another building, a circa-1900 limestone townhouse in Windsor Terrace that faces Prospect Park, sold in February for $2,787 million, $8,000 below the asking price. 

EAST NEW YORK — A billboard is going up in Brooklyn to help police find a boy who went missing more than nine years ago, according to CBSNewYork. The billboard, which is located near the apartment building on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York that was his home when he disappeared, shows a photo of how he looked at age 7 when he disappeared and a computer-aided image showing how he would look today, at age 16. Investigators believe he may still be in Brooklyn, police said. 

FORT GREENE — The Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival is scheduled to come to the park on the afternoon of July 27. The Eric Frazier Sextet will be performing live. The sextet consists of Eric Frazier, vocals and percussion; David Lee Jones, sax; Charles Carrington, keyboard; Wayne Jeffrey, guitar; Hillard Greene, bass; and Lon Ivey, drums. 

GREENPOINT — Comedian Louis C.K. received a standing ovation when he made a surprise appearance at Skankfest NYC, a three-day comedy festival held last weekend at Brooklyn Bazaar in Greenpoint, according to the show-business website TMZ. He opened by making jokes about the various controversies surrounding him. In 2017, he admitted that he’d exposed himself to several women. In late 2018, he got into trouble by making jokes about the Parkland school massacre. 

OCEAN HILL —Permits have been filed for an eight-story, mixed-use building at 1520 Broadway in Ocean Hill, according to New York YIMBY. The building, on the corner of Hancock Street and Broadway, would be near the J train’s Halsey Street subway station. The developer of record is MacQuesten Development, while the architect is listed as GLUCK+. The building would contain 108 apartments, probably rentals, as well as 9,002 feet of commercial space. 

An influx of activity is slated to take place in and along the Gowanus Canal in the coming months, as dormant bridges are raised and numerous barges maneuver along the narrow waterway in preparation for a massive cleanup of the canal. For the full story, visit brooklyneagle.com.

WILLIAMSBURG — Japanese artist Takashi Murakami visited Williamsburg on Friday to unveil a new sculpture and mural for “Beyond the Streets,” a Williamsburg street festival that features 150 artists in over 100,000 square feet.

DON’T FOLLOW THE WIND: NON-VISITOR CENTER Beyond the threshold of the inhabitable, how does culture contest the crippling effects of long-term catastrophe? Don’t Follow the Wind is a project situated inside the radioactive Fukushima exclusion zone in Japan, the inaccessible area surrounding the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, established in the wake of the 2011 disaster that contaminated

the environment separating residents from their homes, land, and community. As radiation knows no borders, transported on wind and water currents, it is a form of contamination that implicates us all in its unseen isotopic presence.

Weeksville Heritage Center is a cultural jewel, a living reminder that an independent free black community thrived in preCivil War Brooklyn.

Its landmarked houses, powerful witnesses to history, have been on my mind in recent weeks as the center’s executives carried out an emergency CrowdRise funding campaign to keep the Crown Heights museum open.

The oldest of these houses on Hunterfly Road dates back to the 1840s.

On June 14, there was dramatic news: The city designated Weeksville Heritage Center as a member of the Cultural Institutions Group.

This was the first time in 20 years a new member had been brought into the group. Membership affords a real shot at financial stability through unrestricted operating grants from the city Department of Cultural Affairs, which also pays the institutions' heat, light and water bills.

City Councilmembers Laurie Cumbo and Robert Cornegy and Council Speaker Corey Johnson and the Brooklyn Black Elected Officials urged the de Blasio Administration to make it happen.

The designation made Weeksville Heritage Center the first black Brooklyn institution on the group’s roster — which was a “huge honor,” the center’s President and Executive Director Rob Fields told me in an interview that day.

Weeksville Heritage Center is the crown jewel of Weeksville the neighborhood.

Nearby, there’s a metal sculpture hanging over the door of 1779-1781 Pacific St. The sculpture depicts six industrial workers.

This is the Piscopo & Nogara Iron Works.

Nogara Group bought the site for $70,000 in 2006 and constructed the building, city Finance Department and Buildings Department records indicate.

TWO FINE FIREHOUSES

IRONWORKS NEAR THE COMMUNITY GARDENS So. Did you know Weeksville is used as a neighborhood name even today?

The City of New York includes it on its map of Community District 8, which Community Board 8 serves, along with North Crown Heights and Prospect Heights.

Weeksville is located within the easternmost section of Crown Heights on the border of Brownsville.

Weeksville the neighborhood consists of the blocks surrounding Weeksville the museum, which is at 158 Buffalo Ave. If you start walking on Atlantic Avenue and stroll the streets parallel to it between Troy and Ralph avenues, you can’t go wrong.

Weeksville’s got lots of beautiful old housing stock.

One of the things you’ll see on a Weeksville walk is Imani Community Garden II. It’s on the corner of Pacific Street and Schenectady Avenue.

It’s the nearby neighbor of Imani Community Garden, which is the home of the chickens I recently photographed.

As you keep walking, soon you’ll find an old-fashioned firehouse at 1472 Bergen St. This is the Rescue Company No. 2 building, constructed in 1893.

There’s a painting on the garage door dedicated to the memory of Firefighter Louis J. Valentino Jr. He died in 1996 while searching for wounded firefighters during a blaze at an illegal chop shop in Flatlands.

As you know if spend time in Brooklyn’s waterfront neighborhoods, Louis J. Valentino Jr. Park and Pier in Red Hook is named for him. It’s a good place to go for views of the Statue of Liberty.

The cast concrete and terra-cotta building is designed as a training facility, with features like a bridge, a manhole and a trench that simulates a subway tunnel.

But back to Weeksville. Further down Bergen Street, on the corner of Ralph Avenue, Engine 227’s eye-catching firehouse can be found.

A CHURCH THAT WAS A STATION ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD The streets of Weeksville are dotted with beautiful churches.

For instance, there’s Berean Baptist Church at 1635 Bergen St. The portion of it that was built in 1894 stood in shadow the afternoon I took my Weeksville stroll. So instead of photographing it, I snapped a picture of the more modern portion of this house of worship, which was constructed in 1960.

The church was established in 1850 — and was a station on the Underground Railroad, its website says.

A second church that caught my eye was the Greater Bibleway Temple on the corner of Rochester Avenue and Lincoln Place.

The late-afternoon sun lit up its pale brick facade.

The Bibleway Church has been located at this building since 1973, its website says.

The Maynard Co-Ops at 1509 Bergen St. have eye-catching window bays.

ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL IS BEING TURNED INTO A NURSING HOME

Here’s a glimpse of Berean Baptist Church.

Architectural history expert Suzanne Spellen said in a 2014 Brownstoner.com story that the stunning church at 261 Rochester Ave. was built as Temple Petach Tikvah in 1914 and 1915.

The day I took my stroll, athletes were busy at St. John’s Park, which is packed with playing fields. A colorful mural on the back wall of St. John’s Recreation Center brightened the scenery.

I didn’t go inside the venerable rec center, which has been in existence since 1956. But the city Parks Department’s website mentions there’s a swimming pool, which sounds pretty great this time of year.

I saw all kinds of lovely old-fashioned housing stock in Weeksville.

For example, there’s a hilly block on Lincoln Place between Buffalo and Ralph avenues that’s very picturesque.

And when I strolled down Prospect Place, I got an eyeful of a bright new facade on the mammoth building that was formerly St. Mary’s Hospital.

Centers Health Care is converting the seven-story building into a 281-bed nursing home, a 2016 project recommendation written

by Borough President Eric Adams says.

The property, whose address is 170 Buffalo Ave., was the last Catholic hospital left in Brooklyn when it closed in 2005.

The building was constructed in the 1970s. Before that, St. Mary’s facility on this site had been built in the 1870s.

This Week in History

On June 26, 1844, President John Tyler married Julia Gardiner in New York City. In its June 27 edition, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The bride is said to be accomplished, beautiful, interesting, an heiress, and 22 — the President, on the other hand, is known to be as homely as a brush fence, and 55 years of age, being a difference of 33. Some of his children, therefore, are probably many years older than their step-mother.�

He and his first wife Letitia (1790-1842) had eight children. He and Julia Gardiner had seven children. Their son Lyon (1853-1935) was married twice, the second time to Sue Ruffin, who was 35 years his junior. Lyon and Sue had three sons, two of whom — Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. (born 1924) and Harrison Ruffin Tyler (born 1928) — are still living.
