Brooklyn attorney Maria Aragona held a party at Our Lady of the Snow Hall in Greenpoint recently where she announced that she would run to be Civil Court judge in the 3rd Municipal Court District.

Aragona, a St. John’s University and Hofstra Law School graduate, worked for one year in private practice prior to going to work in the court system. She was named court Employee of the Year in March 2019 and currently serves as the principal court attorney for Justice Kenneth Sherman. continued on page 3

Historic Bushwick brewery set for redesign

Developers plan to adaptively reuse part of the landmarked William Ulmer Brewery complex, including this former main brewing factory building.

A 19th-century Bushwick brewery will become an office and retail complex, after city Landmarks Preservation Commissioners approved the conversion on Tuesday.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve architecture firm DXA Studio’s adaptive reuse plan for two William Ulmer Brewery buildings — the Main Brew House and Addition at 71-83 Beaver St. and the adjoining Engine and Machine House at 35-43 Belvidere St. The property is located in a section of Bushwick that was home to a dozen breweries in its beer-making heyday more than a century ago.

The complex will be revamped to accommodate 10 or more commercial tenants, DXA Studio Co-founder Jordan Rogove said during a public hearing about the project.

Its developers envision the renovated brewery as “an ecosystem of modern creative users with a shared sense of values and community,” says a posting about an art exhibition called the Chimney X Ulmer Arts that was presented at the brewery last summer.

The renovation plan was “very thoughtfully approached and executed,” Commissioner Anne Holford-Smith said before the vote.

Commission Chairperson Sarah Carroll called the adaptive reuse plan “incredibly exciting.”

In recent years, the brewery buildings have served as a storage facility. Before that, they were used for manufacturing following the closing of the brewery when Prohibition began in 1920.

The brick American Round Arch-style brewery was designed by Theobald Engelhardt, a German-American architect who was prolific throughout Bushwick, Williamsburg and Greenpoint.

The buildings that are being adaptively reused are part of a larger brewery complex constructed between 1872 and 1890. Other buildings in the complex are not part of the project.

The renovation plan includes the construction of a penthouse that’s a visual echo of

small buildings found on Bushwick brewery rooftops in bygone days, which housed pumps and mechanical equipment. This penthouse will be clad with red copper.

The penthouse “will be beautiful and interesting,” Commissioner Adi Shamir-Baron said before the vote.

The renovation plan also calls for the addition of signs with tenants’ names to the complex’s facade and the repainting of the name “Wm. Ulmer Brewery” on it.

The brewery buildings that are being redeveloped belong to MacArthur Holdings, Rivington Company and Brightsky Investments, the project’s website says.

Rivington Company’s founder Travis Stabler was the authorized signatory for the LLC that bought the L-shaped property for $14 million in 2018, city Finance Department records show.

Real estate developer MacArthur Holdings is headed by brothers David, Philip and Howard Katz, the firm’s website says. MacArthur Holdings owns the former American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Brooklyn Office, Shelter and Garage at 233 Butler St. in Gowanus, which was recently designated as an individual city landmark.

Brightsky Investments is a real estate investment company founded by Alvaro and Alejandra Rincon.

Maria Aragona announces plans to run for Civil Court judge Continued from page 2

“Known for her work in various trial parts, Maria has a well-known reputation throughout the legal community for her ability, work ethic and professionalism,” Hon. Lawrence Knipel, administrative judge of the Brooklyn Supreme Court, Civil Term, said about Aragona at her Employee of the Year ceremony. “She also plays a prominent role in numerous local community organizations and bar associations.”

She is president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Kings County and of the Confederation of Columbian Lawyer Associations of New York State. Aragona is also a trustee of the Brooklyn Bar Association and vice president of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn and active in the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, the Puerto Rican Bar Association of New York and the Bay Ridge Lawyers Association.

“Maria refuses to accept the notion that she can’t help everyone,” Justice Sherman said at the same Employee of the Year ceremony. “There is hardly a person in this courthouse who hasn’t been helped by Maria in one way or another. We have a high calling here to deliver justice to our fellow citizens. Maria has never lost sight of that charge.”

Aragona said that she’s active in so many bar associations because she has always been involved in many organizations throughout her life. She explained that it was her experience with the bar that helped her to get a job within the court and one that provided her with many mentors over the years.

"The Confederation used to do a law student forum that I got involved in while I was still at Hofstra,” Aragona said. “Connie Mennella asked me to speak and it has always been something I've been very proud of. That helped to expose me to the bar associations where I have been able to form many of my professional relationships.”

Aragona was honored in March 2017 by the Catholic Lawyers Guild during Shrove Tuesday. When she presented her with that award, Judge Lizette Colon called Aragona a "rising star" and someone with wisdom beyond her years.

“She has been a rising star, not only in the Catholic Lawyers Guild, but in the legal community,” Colon said. “She does anything and everything for the Catholic Lawyers Guild and knows how to anticipate things that we don’t even ask her to do. As an attorney, she works with wisdom and the judgement of someone way beyond her years.

“Her selfless service is the exact example of all that we stand for: helping others without looking for remuneration or even recognition,” she continued. “Nothing is too small; nothing is too large for her to take on. She’ll go out of her way to help others.”

When Aragona was installed as president of the Confederation of Columbian Lawyers, she talked about the importance of family, and it’s easy to see why. She was heavily influenced to be an active community member by three previous generations of women who were apart of the Williamsburg community. She also was inspired to become a lawyer following her father’s death when she was just 10 years old.

“Following his death there was a legal dispute and even though I was just 10, I got a good education in exactly what the courts can do,” Aragona said. “From then on, I wanted to be a lawyer and I wanted to help people.”

Working for Justice Sherman, she explained, has been a great experience as they sit in the jury coordinating part, which handles nearly every case prior to it going to trial. She points to Judge Lizette Colon, who previously had her position as principal court attorney to Justice Sherman, and who now handles the busy prenote discovery part.

“Judge Sherman helps so many people, and I've watched him mentor Judge Colon, my predecessor, who is now able to help a ton of people herself and he has prepared me to move on and become a judge myself,” Aragona said. “So many cases go through his part before they go to trial. It's the last step to settle a case, and each day we deal with over 100 cases and between 20 and 30 motions.”

Aragona explained that her wanting to get involved with the community goes back to her great-grandmother who moved here from

Italy approximately 100 years ago. Her grandmother Tillie Tarantino and her aunt were also activists in the Williamsburg area, and Maria herself is involved with Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and Community Board 1, where she assists the Women's Issues Committee as a non-board member. Her mother is also a teacher at P.S. 152.

“I'm the fourth generation of strong women who are community activists in Williamsburg,” Aragona said. “I've always been the type of person that people came to with advice. I've always wanted to help people. It's why I went to law school because I knew that a law degree would open those doors.”

Man tosses juice on priest and altar during Greenpoint mass

A man was arrested after throwing juice on an altar and at a priest during a Sunday morning Mass in Greenpoint, according to the Diocese of Brooklyn.

The Dioceses on Tuesday released a video of the incident, which they say occurred during the 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. Anthony of Padua on Jan. 12. In the video, a man is seen approaching the altar during Mass and pouring juice on it. He is also seen tossing some at Father Jossy Vattothu, the priest leading Sunday’s mass.

“During my years as a priest, nothing like this has ever happened,” Vattothu said in a statement. “At first, as he approached the altar, I thought he had something to tell me. It is a miracle that the bread and wine were not damaged, and I was able to continue the Mass, consecrating the bread and wine into the body and blood of Vattothu, who recently celebrated his 10th year as a priest, is urging parishioners to come together, and sit closer to the altar.

“I pray for this person and do not know what was going through his mind. I am grateful for the parishioners who were so caring and consoled me after Mass,” he said. “I would urge Catholics who attend Mass to sit closer to the altar so that we as a faith community can be more together and make the priest feel more comfortable.”

The NYPD’s 94th Precinct responded quickly, according to the Diocese, and the suspect, who was detained by church attendees, was reportedly arrested. Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment and it remains unclear whether or not the incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

Monsignor Anthony Hernandez, chancellor of the Diocese of Brooklyn, said the incident hits a little too close to home as the city struggles to combat a recent spike in anti-Semitism, and other hate crimes, across the five boroughs.

“It’s really egregious that somebody would do that at the most sacred part of the Catholic Mass, which is the consecration,” he said. “I think right now, people are scared given the current environment of anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic incidents. People are afraid to go to their house of worship.”

In 2019, there were 15 hate crime-related arrests within the 94th Precinct, where Sunday’s desecration occurred, according to NYPD data.

The church, located at 862 Manhattan Ave., is especially poignant to the neighborhood. The red-brick church with stone trim, was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1982. The church, whose cornerstone was laid in 1873, is located at the foot of Milton Street in the Greenpoint Historic District.

Swastikas on Greenpoint restaurant latest in pattern of anti-Semitism, locals say

After the NYPD released footage of the vandals who drew swastikas on the side of a Greenpoint Mexican restaurant, residents are saying that racist graffiti is no new phenomenon in the neighborhood.

The footage, recorded on Dec. 22 outside the restaurant Acapulco and released Wednesday on Twitter, reveals the faces of two suspects, one of whom appears to be in the act of vandalizing the storefront.

“It’s one of the latest in a series of [hate crimes] that’s gone on here for years,” 20-year Greenpoint resident Heather Letzkus said of the incident. “It goes up and it goes down, but it’s always been here.”

The recent crime is reminiscent of a scourge of anti-Semitic messages found posted on U.S. Postal Service stickers around the area last January. September saw a fringe group of polish nationalists protest a Greenpoint resident’s City Council campaign launch, and in November 2018, a Williamsburg family was forced to cover swastikas carved into a concrete sidewalk after their complaints to city agencies and elected officials drew no response.

Dana Rachlin, a member of the community and founder of local civic engagement nonprofit NYC Together, said propagation of racist graffiti has been a repeated incident in Greenpoint.

“Two summers ago we started to see an uptick in swastikas and other incidents happening,” she said. “I think that it’s super important that the NYPD recognizes that this is a common occurrence that deeply impacts us emotionally and psychologically.”

Rachlin, however, lauded the police response, which she said has been swift.

“The police have been really great in working with our community to address the problem,” she later told the Gazette by phone.

Greenpoint residents on Twitter claim to have identified one of the vandals from the recent video as a member of white supremacist organization Proud Boys, using a photo taken at an October 2018 speech by group founder Gavin McInnes at the Metropolitan Republican Club. The event resulted in assaults on protesters and arrests of several members.

Commanding Officer Kathleen E. Fahey of the 94th Precinct, which covers Greenpoint and northern Williamsburg, said the Twitter posts claiming to have identified a suspect have been given to the hate crimes detective investigating the case.

BENSONHURST — As the U.S. Census gets closer, Bill Guarinello, chair of Brooklyn Community Board 11, which represents Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and portions of Gravesend, has announced that the board has established an ad-hoc Census Committee, according to the Home Reporter. Dr. Tim Law, a retired Department of Education administrator and longtime community volunteer, will chair the group. Its task will be to convince area residents, some of whom have been reluctant to disclose personal information, to fill out their Census forms.

Census Day is April 1. Afterward, temporary Census Bureau employees will hit the streets to interview people who didn’t fill out their forms. Fifty-six percent of Board 11’s employees are foreign-born. 

‘LOVE TRIANGLE’ REPORTEDLY LED TO DEATH IN CONEY

CONEY ISLAND — A man who had been stabbed several times as a result of a “love triangle” apparently tried to flag down passing cars before he eventually collapsed and died on a Coney Island street early Sunday morning, according to amNewYork. None of the drivers stopped to help the dying man, police said. James Santiago, 42, of the Bronx, was with a married woman at her home on West 15th Street when her husband reportedly walked in on them. The husband then stabbed Santiago several times in the torso, amNewYork reported. Officials say they are holding the wife as a person of interest for allegedly helping to drag the wounded man into the street when he was completely naked and then abandoning him. 

IMAGINING DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN WITHOUT BQE

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — An op-ed in Streetsblog by Brooklyn-based urban designer Michael King criticizes current plans to rebuild the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to accommodate repairs to its cantilevered section in Brooklyn Heights. He pointed out that some of the land beneath the BQE could be reclaimed for shopping, offices, housing and parkland. Without the highway, he said, neighborhood streets that once existed in longer versions, such as York and Duffield streets, could be rebuilt. Furthermore, he said, the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge, without the ramps to the BQE, could be rebuilt as a giant plaza. Rather than creating traffic jams, he believes, the removal of the highway would deter traffic in general. 

UNTAPPED CITIES OFFERS TOURS OF BAM ARCHIVES

FORT GREENE — Untapped Cities, a website and organization focusing on hidden aspects of the city, is offering several tours during the next few months of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Hamm Archives. The archives, named after banker Charles Hamm, a major benefactor of BAM, go back 150 years to tell the story of BAM and the neighboring communities. The archives are located inside a former Studebaker dealership building. The tours will be led by Louie Fleck, BAM’s archive manager. TIMES GIVES KUDOS TO GREENPOINT RESTAURANT

GREENPOINT — A New York Times review of Pierozek, a new Polish restaurant in Greenpoint, focuses, appropriately, on its pierogi, which are dumplings filled in this case with butter, fried onions, potatoes and cheese. Radek Kucharski, one of the owners, says many second- and third-generation families of Eastern European immigrants come to Pierozek because they are “in love with the taste and memories that we bring them.” Kucharski, who was born in Brooklyn, co-owns the restaurant with his wife Alexandra, who was born in Brooklyn to a Polish family. The Times review also mentions the meat version of pierogi, which contains pork shoulder; the sauerkraut-and-mushroom version; and the sweet version, which contains cheese and fresh berries.

FULTON FERRY LOFT IS GOING FOR $2.6M

FULTON FERRY LANDING — A unit at a loft building at 8 Old Fulton St. in Fulton Ferry Landing is on the market for $2.6 million, according to Curbed. The Italianate-style building was built in the early 1860s as an office for the Brooklyn City Railroad Company. It offers views of the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River and Lower Manhattan. PARK SLOPE — Last week, the city Department of Education and State Assemblymember Robert Carroll (D-Park Slope-Windsor Terrace) announced that the DOE had launched a pilot program for a new method of dyslexia screening, known as the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreen, at P.S. 107 in Park Slope and P.S. 130 in Windsor Terrace. “I have been lobbying DOE to universally screen for dyslexia since I was elected in 2016,” said Carroll.

“As someone who is dyslexic and benefited greatly from early detection which allowed my teachers and parents to take proper curriculum interventions, I know that early childhood screening of dyslexia will change the academic lives of countless children.” 

BED-STUY BROWNSTONE IS SELLING FOR $2.36 MILLION

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A stately 19th century brownstone at 195 Hancock St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant is selling for $2.36 million, according to Brownstoner. The neo-Grec rowhouse was designed by well-known architect Isaac Delamater Reynolds. The two parlors include elaborate woodwork, shutters, parquet floors, mirrors, build-in display cabinets and an elaborately carved fireplace. The home has been owned by the same family since 1974. 

BAY RIDGE PIZZERIAS FEATURED ON POPULAR BLOG

BAY RIDGE — Two Bay Ridge pizza havens, Elegante Pizzeria and Gino’s, recently were featured on the popular sports and culture blog Barstool Sports’ Pizza Reviews segment. In Pizza Reviews, Barstools founder David Portney, who has visited hundreds of pizza places, assessed the two Ridge favorites.

Portney gave the Elegante slice a score of 74 and the Gino’s slice a score of 76. 

BATH BEACH DISPUTE LEADS TO VIOLENCE

BATH BEACH — Two people are in the hospital and two others are being questioned by police after a dispute in Bath Beach turned violent on Sunday, according to CBSNewYork. The incident happened just after 5 p.m. on Bay Seventh Street. Police said the two men had an argument over their children that led to one man being stabbed in the neck. 

DEVELOPER SEEKS TO BUILD COMMERCIAL-INDUSTRIAL B’LDG

WILLIAMSBURG — A developer known as 307 Kent Associates is seeking zoning amendments so it can construct a nine-story non-residential building, according to New York YIMBY. The property at 307 Kent St. is currently occupied by an event space knows as Villain. If the zoning amendments are ap-

proved, the building would contain 9,000 square feet of retail space, 70,000 square feet of commercial and light manufacturing space, and 22,000 square feet of medical office space.

The amendments are also expected to spur the construction of a similar building on a neighboring lot known as “Development Site 2,” New York YIMBY said. 

LAUNDROMAT-COFFEEHOUSE OPENS IN WILLIAMSBURG

WILLIAMSBURG — A combined laundromat-café has opened in Williamsburg “where you can do your laundry while also enjoying a nice cup of coffee or tea,” according to Travel and Leisure. Sisters Corinna and Theresa Williams worked to create an “environmentally aware” place where people could both do their weekly laundry and also enjoy café drinks. The first floor of the establishment, known as Celsious, contains the laundromat, while the second floor contains the café, whose food is made with “sustainable ingredients,” Travel and Leisure reported. Celsious is located at 115 N. Seventh St. 

DESIGNER-ILLUSTRATOR INKS SEXY GRAPHIC NOVEL

BOROUGHWIDE — Brooklyn resident Sylvan Migdal, who works as a web designer and illustrator for the Brooklyn Paper, has written a 520-page graphic novel, “The Complete Curvy.” The story, which Migdal began while at college, is full of “sexy princesses, wizards and caramel cockroaches,” the Brooklyn Paper said. The story focuses on a Brooklyn resident who meets a princess from another world who has run away from an arranged marriage to a super-villain. The two explore their sexuality while fighting against the villain, according to the Brooklyn Paper. 

SPACE IS THE PLACE, SAYS ARTIST EXHIBITED AT BPL

GRAND ARMY PLAZA — A Texas artist recently unveiled a series of delicate sculptures at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch that he says is inspired by the search for alien life.

Dario Robleto, one of two creators behind the library’s “Stars Down to Earth” exhibit, plans to show off his work at an opening reception . “Robleto’s sculptures, built from domes of clear acrylic, hand-cut paper, and polished seashells, are designed as gifts for potential visitors from outer space,” the Brooklyn Paper said. Robleto recently worked as artist in residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute in California. 

VELAZQUEZ SEEKS FEMA RESPONSE TO PUERTO RICO EARTHQUAKES

BOROUGHWIDE — U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn-Manhattan-Queens) and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York) have asked FEMA in a letter to use all its authority to ensure the safety of lives and property across Puerto Rico. They urged the administration to release withheld disaster aid and to grant full disaster relief status. “Puerto Ricans remember all too painfully how this administration fumbled and failed in response to Hurricane Maria,” said Velazquez. “During that disaster, incompetence and indifference cost thousands of Americans their lives.”

Hey. All of you who are fighting the January doldrums and wishing Valentine’s Day would get here to cheer you up. Did you know that Love Lane is a real street?

It’s in the middle of Brooklyn Heights, in the oldest historic district in all of New York City. What a fine place to take a loved one for a stroll.

So yeah, there’s a CVS at the entrance to Love Lane as opposed to some romantic, candle-lit cafe where you can sip champagne together. But the drugstore is situated in a sweet little brick house with shutters on the windows.

And Love Lane leads to College Place, which is one of the prettiest streets in Brooklyn Heights. That’s saying a lot in a neighborhood full of landmarked homes built before the Civil War. Do you know the way to Love Lane? Let me show you. It’s part of today’s stroll through the north side of Brooklyn Heights.

I promise we’ll walk around the rest of the neighborhood on another occasion.

To get to Brooklyn Heights, you can take the 2, 3, 4, 5 or R train to the Borough Hall stop or the A or C train to the High Street/Brooklyn Bridge/Cadman Plaza East stop.

You’ll wind up on the corner of Court and Montague streets, or a couple blocks away, depending on which train line you take.

Just like Romeo and Juliet When you walk down Montague Street, one of the most eyecatching things you’ll see is a pair of century-old bank branches on the corner of Clinton Street. Both of them are city-designated landmarks. Both were constructed in an era when bank designs were invariably grand and regal. One is meant to look like a palace and the other a temple.

Architecture firm York & Sawyer designed the Brooklyn Trust Company Building, which is directly on the corner at 177 Montague St. It is now a Chase Bank branch.

It’s modeled on a palazzo in Verona, which is of course Romeo and Juliet’s hometown while we’re on the subject of Valentine’s Day and Love Lane.

You must take a minute to step inside the neo-Italian Renaissance-style bank. This gives you a reason to stand on its front steps and get a close look at the Instagram-worthy lampposts on either side of the entrance door. The bases of the lamps feature big winged lions and little tortoises.

Then when you step inside, you will find a landmarked interior, which is a rare thing in Brooklyn. This banking hall has a vaulted ceiling, super-dramatic chandeliers, vast arched windows and an elaborately patterned mosaic floor.

Herman Behr House The second bank property, whose address is 181-183 Montague St., is the People’s Trust Company Building. It looks like a Classical temple, with a row of columns outside the front entrance and above them, a triangular pediment with fabulous sculptural figures.

Architecture firm Mowbray & Uffinger designed the neoClassical building, which was constructed from 1903 to 1906. It is now a Citibank branch.

From here on out, most of the neighborhood falls within the boundaries of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District. Entire blocks are landmarked.

Turn up Clinton Street to the corner of Pierrepont Street, and you’ll find one of Brooklyn Heights’ most dramatic buildings.

The Brooklyn Historical Society, designed by architect George Browne Post, was constructed in 1881. The Queen Anne-style brick building’s facade is decorated with terra-cotta busts of famous folk including Shakespeare and Beethoven.

Turn left on Pierrepont Street, which has stately brownstones.

There’s an eye-catching Beaux-Arts apartment house at the intersection of Henry Street. Kitty-corner from this apartment house, whose address is 161 Henry St., you’ll find Herman Behr House.

This Romanesque Revival mansion’s address is 82 Pierrepont St. Frank Freeman was the architect. It’s currently used as an apartment building. Over the decades, it has by turns been a hotel, and belonged to a monastery, and reportedly housed a brothel.

Picturesque College Place Head up Henry Street. And in short order, you’ll be at the entrance to Love Lane. Cupid’s favorite Brooklyn street is one block long. In the middle of it, you turn right onto scenic cul-de-sac College Place.

One side of College Place is lined with painted brick carriage houses with arched garage doors and shutters on the windows.

Head back out onto Love Lane, which exits onto Hicks Street.

The brownstones on Hicks Street are really something. If you’re in the mood to look closely at architectural details, there are Tudor-style doorways on side-by-side homes 131 and 135 Hicks St., Clay Lancaster’s “Old Brooklyn Heights: New York’s First Suburb” says.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES WITH A STROLL IN LANDMARKED BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Continued from page 2 INB — By the way, this is the book version of building-by-building historical research that Lancaster did, which neighborhood residents used in their successful efforts to get the city to create the Brooklyn Heights Historic District in 1965.

If you need caffeine as you head up Hicks Street, you’ll find Joe Coffee Company in the storefront of a beautiful apartment building on the corner of Pineapple Street. Right next door to the apartment building, a lovely carriage house at 31 Pineapple St. is sure to catch your eye.

Let it rain In 2014, when Steven Spielberg was filming “Bridge of Spies,” he temporarily turned the storefront where the coffee shop is now located into a 1950s dress shop. As a crowd of Brooklyn Heights residents watched, Spielberg

used an enormous machine to pour simulated rain on this intersection — and actor Tom Hanks.

Further up Hicks Street, take a quick detour onto Orange Street to see Plymouth Church, which was founded in 1847. Eminent abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher was the preacher there. His statue is on the church lawn.

When you’re back on Hicks Street, keep walking.

On the corner of Cranberry Street you’ll find a beautiful house constructed in 1829.

The corner storefront is home to Jack the Horse Tavern, whose address is 66 Hicks St. Beloved wood-frame houses are sprinkled here and there on these blocks on the north end of Brooklyn Heights. Turn left on Middagh Street, and you’ll find them on both sides of the road as you head towards the corner of Willow Street.

Cher’s ‘Moonstruck’ house On that corner, you’ll find 24 Middagh St. This Federalstyle gray clapboard home has crimson-colored window shutters and a backyard with a carriage house.

This eye-catching abode is nicknamed “the Queen of Brooklyn Heights Houses.”

Accounts of its age differ.

Some people think it has been around since 1790. Lancaster’s book says it was constructed in 1829.

When you face the opposite direction on this Middagh Street corner, you’re overlooking the BQE. And beyond the highway, you see the top floors of Panorama, the office complex at 25 Columbia Heights that was formerly the world headquarters of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Remember the movie “Moonstruck,” which won Cher an Oscar for Best Actress?

Her house in the film is on another Willow Street corner, at 19 Cranberry St. The brick house has a small plaque on the front of it that gives the year of its construction as 1833.

The unpainted brick, which is what you now see, is red.

Continue down Willow Street. You’ll soon pass a fabulous 1920s hotel that was called The Towers. The toppaid Brooklyn Dodgers stayed there back when they were our borough’s baseball team.

The property, whose address is 21 Clark St., later belonged to the Jehovah’s Witnesses. It’s now being turned into a rental building

for seniors called The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, with a mix of independent-living units, assisted-living units and memory-care units for residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The Promenade’s epic views Further down Willow Street, there’s a home where playwright Arthur Miller lived.

The Federal-style rowhouse at 155 Willow St. was constructed in the 1820s.

At the corner of Pierrepont Street, turn right. In just a minute, you’ll reach an entrance to the Promenade.

The fate of the landmarked walkway hangs in limbo while a panel studies ways to repair the BQE beneath it. My colleague Mary Frost is keeping

everybody up to speed on this complex topic.

For a moment, set the subject of the BQE aside and simply take in the views that the famous esplanade offers.

There’s the World Trade Center with other Lower Manhattan skyscrapers. In the near distance, a new grass berm is taking shape at Brooklyn Bridge Park. To the north, the Brooklyn Bridge stretches across the East River.

On the Promenade’s inland side, the backs of Columbia Heights brownstones brighten up the scenery.

If you’ve taken your walk late enough in the afternoon, you’ll be right on time to see the sunset, which is always a thing of beauty. If it’s too early, you could go get a bite to eat on Montague Street.

Truman Capote lived on Willow St. Literature lovers appreciate Willow Street because Truman Capote lived on it when he worked on “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood.”

The house at 70 Willow St., where the author lived in a basement apartment from 1955 to 1965, belonged to Broadway set designer and American Ballet Theatre codirector Oliver Smith.

Visitor guides like the one on NYC & Company’s website say the Greek Revivalstyle house’s facade is yellow.

A raccoon stands atop a trash mound, surrounded by rats. A black widow hangs feet away from a turkey, and a ram shares a perch with a Tyrannosaurus rex. An arrow whizzes through the air and pierces the abdomen of a foam deer, which shakes back and forth before it regains its footing on a wooden stand.

This isn’t a hunting ground — it’s a Gowanus archery studio, which transforms into a faux hunting range on the first Saturday of every month.

With a relatively short hunting season in New York, bow hunters take to events like Gotham Archery’s 3D Hunt to brush up on their skills alongside archers who are just shooting to switch up the monotony of aiming at paper targets.

“It’s much, much more difficult than shooting in one distance,” said Oleg Vykrest, who started shooting three years ago with his now 12-year-old son, as a way to focus his son’s weakening vision.

In Gotham’s main room, archers stand in a line in front of a field of more than 30 animal targets, each with different point values. Some shoot at 3D targets from stepladders, while others sit down in fake shrubbery and aim at others. At the end of the night, they tally up their point totals to be added to a leader board.

Three-D archery is typically shot outdoors and is a national tournament, said Gotham manager Pat Carroll, but in Brooklyn, it’s easier to find opportunities to shoot inside.

The majority of the studio’s clientele just shoots 3D for fun.

“Normally, I shoot bare bow, which means I shoot traditionally, without a sight or anything like that, and shooting 3D at different

distances with bare bow is a real challenge,” said Nelson Wong, who shoots as often as he possibly can. “It’s a lifestyle, it’s a sport, it’s exercise … eat, sleep, archery.”

Once every quiver is empty after a round of shooting, the archers retrieve their arrows, sometimes getting help to pull them out of the foam models. If an arrow is so deep it won’t budge, a special tool is brought out to remove it.

The hunts typically attract between 15 and 20 people for a night, Carroll said. But regulars like Martin Fuchs, who has yet to shoot 3D, also come out just to spend time in the social environment.

“For me, archery is almost like therapy,” Fuchs said. “It’s very relaxing, it’s very calming, it’s how I can shut off my brain.”

If ever a clergy member’s ministry embodied the essence of faith in Brooklyn, it was Father Joseph Gancila, who died on Monday, Jan. 6, at the age of 50. After stints in churches throughout the borough, the beloved priest was serving as a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Dyker Heights at the time of his death.

Gancila was born in Brooklyn and attended the parish school at Regina Pacis and Xaverian High School. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn on June 2, 2001.

In addition to his most current assignment, during his career, he served as a parochial vicar at St. Mary Mother of Jesus in Bensonhurst, Sacred Heart in Glendale, Our Lady of Angels in Bay Ridge and St. Bernadette in Dyker Heights.

Gancila was remembered

by Msgr. Kieran Harrington, the vicar for communication for the Diocese of Brooklyn, as the quintessential parish priest. Harrington knew Gancila for 22 years and was also a classmate of his at the seminary. “This is a man who loved being a priest in every ounce of his being,” Harrington told this paper.

“He recorded in his own hand the names of every person he ever offered a Mass for or prayed for over the course of his 19 years as a priest. There were volumes and volumes of diaries listing those names,”

ON JAN. 14, 1929, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Los Angeles (AP) — Another of the Old West’s links with the glamorous past is gone in the passing here of Wyatt Earp, gun fighter, whose blazing six-shooters, notched a dozen times, were for most of his life allied on the side of law and order. Although Earp majored in gun fighting and adventure, his one contact with pugilism brought him unforgettable renown. Earp’s so-called ‘raw’ decision in the Bob Fitzsimmons-Tom Sharkey fight in San Francisco, Dec. 2, 1896, when he awarded the fight to Sharkey on a foul in the eighth round, caused a roar that reverberated through the boxing world for years and excited as much comment in its day as the long count given Gene Tunney at Chicago in 1927. Part of Earp’s life after he had laid aside his guns, which spoke often in the wild and woolly days of Dodge City and Ellsworth, Kan., and Tombstone, Ariz., ran parallel with that of Tex Rickard, and a last vain effort to send a word of cheer to his friend the promoter contributed to his death. Although he had been ill for some time, Earp left his bed here the day before Rickard died to send a telegram to his sick friend in Florida. The exertion caused a relapse and Earp died yesterday at the age of 80.”  ON JAN. 14, 1952, the Eagle reported, “A twin-engine Northeast Airlines plane, with 36 aboard, undershot the LaGuardia Field runway in the fog early today and plunged into the East River. At least 28 persons were injured. All passengers and crew members were rescued. Eyewitnesses reported that about 9 a.m. the plane, arriving from Boston, ‘sputtered’ and dived into the murky water about 1,000 feet from the field. A crash boat and a commercial tug were the first to arrive on the scene. Martin Byrne, 44, of 7522 Ridge Boulevard, aboard the tug, said the passengers lined the wings and tail assembly of the sinking airliner waving for help. Police, Coast Guard and Navy rescue facilities were rushed to the area and victims were taken to Flushing, Queens General and Mary Immaculate Hospitals in Queens and others were sent to Fordham Hospital in the Bronx. Police Commissioner George P. Monaghan, who directed police rescue operations at the emergency station at the foot of 14th Ave., College Point, said he was sure all passengers were removed from the plane.
