It’s no secret that nightlife thrives in New York. There’s a reason, after all, that the metropolis is dubbed The City That Never Sleeps. The $35.1 billion industry creates roughly 300,000 jobs — and Brooklyn is leading the charge, according to the city’s Nightlife Mayor Ariel Palitz.

“I have some Brooklyn sta-

tistics that show what a lot of us already know, which is that Brooklyn is outgrowing all of the rest of the five boroughs when it comes to nightlife,” she said. “Brooklyn is booming.”

Brooklyn, according to Palitz, accounts for 21 percent of all of the city’s nightlife and 10 percent of job growth — higher than any of the other four boroughs.

City begins fining businesses for using single-use foam products

Just months after banning plastic bags, New York City has begun to fine restaurants, stores and manufacturers that continue to offer single-use foam products — like takeout clamshells, cups and “packing peanuts” — after the material was banned on Jan 1.

Following a six-month warning period, the city’s Department of Sanitation began issuing penalties in July, with 38 violations handed out as of Tuesday. A first offense is $250, a second is $500 and third and subsequent offenses are $1,000 apiece.

Foam, which is not biodegradable, is collected as trash and often ends up as litter in streets, beaches and in waterways where it absorbs pollutants and is mistaken for food by marine life. The material, also known as Styrofoam or polystyrene, can also clog storm drains.

“Foam cannot be recycled, plain and simple,” Dina Montes of DSNY told the Greenpoint Gazette. “It’s also a contaminant in our recycling and organics programs,” she added. “Bottom line — this type of waste creates big problems.”

Prior to the ban, foam made up roughly 1 percent of New York City’s waste stream, according to Montes, who said that while that percentage may seem low, it adds up.

Just last year, 30,000 tons of foam were collected in the city.

Foam blocks used as protective packaging, for example, and foam containers for raw meat or seafood are exempt from the ban.

Since January, DSNY has worked to educate businesses about the ban and the fines for ignoring it through mailers, email blasts and social media campaigns, including #FoamBanNYC and #FoamFreeNYC. Fines are issued when DSNY’s Enforcement Unit observes violations or while investigating 311 complaints. The city’s Department of Health and Department of Consumer Affairs can also issue summonses to businesses.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said he was thrilled that New York City was finally taking steps to remove the material from the city’s waste stream.

“Reducing our waste is vital to the health of our planet and our city,” Johnson said. “Single-use foam has littered our streets, sidewalks and parks or ended up in our landfills for too long.”

Assistant Speaker of the Assembly Felix Ortiz said that the city’s decision to ban foam should pressure the state and ultimately the country to ban the product.

Albany and Suffolk counties, as well as the city of Glen Cove, have already banned foam within New York State. Major cities that have also enacted the ban include Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Portland, Oregon.

Maryland and Maine have also agreed to ban foam. Maryland will become the first state in the nation to go foam-free when its ban beings July 1, 2020, while Maine’s ban goes into effect Jan 1. 2021.

Paper bags pose their own set of environmental burdens.

The ban on plastic bags is coming. Does it go far enough?

When New York became the third state in the country to ban plastic bags, many applauded the decision, but some believe that even stricter laws need to be implemented to limit their use further and to prevent residents from becoming equally reliant on paper bags — which come with their own set of environmental burdens.

The plastic bag ban goes into effect in March 2020, but the law only applies to a handful of establishments like grocery and big-box stores. Restaurants, pharmacies and dry cleaners, for example, will still be able to use them, causing some activists to view the ban as only a Band-Aid solution.

Jeremy Cherson, legislative advocacy manager of water nonprofit Riverkeeper, said that while the ban is a good first step, it’s not enough.

He said the restaurant industry in New York City is massive and that delivery and food ordering services like Grub Hub

and Uber Eats use copious amounts of bags.

New Yorkers go through roughly 23 billion single-use plastic bags per year, according to the New York State Association of Counties, and the average life cycle of a plastic bag is a mere 15 minutes.

Cherson said the ultimate goal is to have a 100 percent ban on all single-use plastics, including bags, cutlery and cups, and to nudge consumers into more environmentally sustainable practices like bringing their own reusable containers.

Come March 1, 2020, retailers across the state will be able to offer customers paper bags, but according to Cherson, they pose an equal if not worse threat to the environment.

“By banning plastic bags, we don’t want to create another problem,” he told the Greenpoint Gazette. “We’re trying to address climate change and water scarcity, but we’re shifting to a product that is energy-intensive in both its production and transportation and also water-in-

tensive in terms of growing the trees and then processing them into paper.”

He said that because paper bags are heavier than plastic ones, they require more fossil fuels for transport, and they also take up more space in landfills, adding to an ongoing recycling crisis.

Cities and counties have the option of charging a fivecent tax for single-use paper bags to motivate shoppers further to bring reusable bags.

Three cents from that fee will go to the Environmental Protection Fund, while the other two cents will go to the locality to pay for distribution of reusable bags. New York City has already opted into implementing that charge.

Cherson said that while it may take some getting used to, people will eventually become acclimated to bringing their own reusable bags to stores.

“I don’t foresee a situation where people can’t adjust,” he said. “People have adjusted in Europe where laws like this have been in place for years, and life goes on.

There are bigger and more pressing day-to-day issues for people to worry about.”

Both providers and consumers of Brooklyn’s nightlife are constantly fighting to protect the integrity of the industry and

avoid upcharges — a trait inherent to the club scene in Manhattan — but competition from mega corporations continues to make it difficult.

“It’s not just the music business where you see this conglomeration, where you see just a couple of brands out there, it’s part of our society,” said Charley Ryan, co-owner of Brooklyn Bowl.

“I just wish that people would be a little more discerning and really go with their heart when they go with their wallet.”

State doubles down on efforts to create more green roofs

State legislators have voted to increase tax breaks for building owners who choose to implement “green roofs,” roofs covered by trees and vegetation.

According to the city’s Comptroller’s Office, only seven roofs in the city have taken advantage of the tax abatement since its creation a decade ago. Only one in every 1,000 buildings in New York City have green roofs.

The new law, sponsored by State Sen. John Liu and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, aims to change that.

Advocates argue that green roofs not only provide green spaces in neighborhoods tight on square mileage, but also help alleviate storm run-off during rain storms.

“New York City should be at the forefront of urban sustainability and green innovation,” New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer said in a statement. “Our barren roofs offer an ideal opportunity to improve air quality, re-

duce energy use, ease storm related flooding, and increase the amount of green spaces in communities that need it the most.”

The new law triples the tax break from $5.23 per square foot of green space to $15 in community districts prone to sewer overflows during rainstorms and lacking in green spaces. It also extends the already existing tax abatement until 2024.

Bushwick residents sue landlord over negligent living conditions

Working-class tenants are taking their landlord to court over uninhabitable living conditions at a four-story building in Bushwick.

Five tenant families at 299 Troutman St. contend that they have been enduring decades of negligent repairs and shoddy building work, including leaky roofs and rotted walls, and now are suing their landlord to force immediate repairs.

Aided by Mobilization for Justice, Inc., the families have filed a complaint in which they ask Brooklyn’s Housing Court to appoint a new administrator to manage their building in an effort to bring their broken-down units up to code and make emergency repairs.

The application is part of a Housing Quality Enforcement Program under the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, in which extremely distressed or at-risk privatelyowned residential buildings are temporarily taken over in a bid to improve health and quality of life issues of residents.

“The ultimate relief you can have is … the [Housing] Court appoints an administrator to take the rent roles, manage the building, and take loans out against the landlord to do the actual repairs that are necessary in this case,” said Araina Marmora, senior staff attorney for Mobilization for Justice, Inc. If the tenants succeed in their filing, an administrator is appointed and HPD will provide loans to make emergency repairs on the building. The loans in turn will go back onto the property as a lien to be paid back by the building’s landlord.

“It’s one of the statutes on the books that we use in the most severe cases. The standard is ‘conditions threatening the life, health or safety of the tenants that have existed for more than five days,’” added Marmora.

HPD conducted a feasibility study back in April to determine the needs of the Troutman Street property. The results included the need for a new roof, heating system, water system and window replacements, among other major renovations.

“Without proper incentives for building owners, we can’t achieve our goal of a sustainable city,” Adams continued. “We’re happy that Albany picked up where we left off and increased the tax abatement.”

Green roofs have also been found to reduce the “urban heat-island effect,” cooling communities where heat is trapped in concrete and asphalt. Cities can sometimes be as much as five degrees hotter than rural counterparts, which drives air pollution, heat-related deaths and increased air conditioning costs.

As the effects of the climate crisis hit New York, summers promise to get hotter. Green roofs are also a part of the city’s NYC Cool Roofs initiative, which has also sent city workers to paint more than 9.2 million square feet of roofs white to reflect the sun and cool the city down.

“Business should see the government as a support system to help them implement these sustainable practices,” said Adams.

BAY RIDGE — The most recent Bay Ridge location of Circles Café and Grill has closed its doors at 6931 Third Ave. and disconnected its phone, according to Brookynreporter.com. The restaurant’s original location, which opened in 1976 was 310 Bay Ridge Ave. The owners opened an addition Bay Ridge location at 9023 Third Ave., which lasted until 2015. “One of [Circles’] chefs died this past year, and they decided to close the business,” Moe Sayed, a real estate broker who is listing the property, told Brooklynreporter.com. BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Bedford-Stuyvesant has turned into a “hotbed of construction,” with about 27 percent of all homes on the market being within a football field’s distance of an active construction site, according to Patch. “Moving to Kings County might not necessarily bring you peace and tranquility, at least in the near term as the borough’s building book continues,” said Nur Gonen, data scientist for Localize.city, a real estate research website. Localize.city warned house- or apartment-hunters, especially those who look at properties at night, to investigate the neighborhood before they sign a lease. According to a Patch survey, Bed-Stuy was Brooklyn’s second-busiest neighborhood, just behind Williamsburg. 

BOROUGHWIDE — On Friday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams joined elected officials and health experts at Borough Hall to urge Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O’Neill to include mediation and mindfulness training in a recently announced NYPD Health and Wellness Task Force. Since the beginning of 2019, six police officers have taken their own lives. “The stress and trauma that our police officers face on a daily basis, where they are frequently forced to make life-ordeath decisions, are all too familiar to me as a former NYPD captain and member of the force,” said Adams, speaking at Borough Hall. “The job of a New York City police officer has always been a stressful one, but policing today is more mentally and environmentally taxing that ever before,” added Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. 

BROWNSVILLE — On July 27, 30 Brooklyn kids will get a chance to run their own business, according to Brooklyner. Through the National Lemonade Day program, they have been drafting business plans and learning about finance. Finally, they will sell their lemonade at the Brownsville Recreation Center. Children who participate mainly are referred by the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corp., although some sign up individually. “When you see how inspired kids are when they actually start collecting money, it’s a pretty powerful thing,” said Bryan Guadingo, the National Lemonade Day program’s New York City director. Last year’s event was held in McCarren Park in Williamsburg. 

BUSHWICK — The MTA has announced that it will cut back L-train overnight service between Lorimer Street and Broadway Junction on nights and weekends for the rest of July and for occasional nights and weekends through the end of the year, according to Curbed. Trains are already running only every 20 minutes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. On weeknights, trains won’t run between Lorimer and Broadway Junction from midnight to 5 a.m.; and on weekends, the closure will begin at 10 a.m. The MTA says it needs access to the tracks in Brooklyn to make repairs as part of its over Canarsie Tunnel project. The L train’s East River tunnel was seriously damaged during Superstorm Sandy. While the Lorimer-Broadway Junction stretch of the L train is closed, shuttle buses will be available to straphangers, Curbed said. 

CANARSIE — Mozelle Brown, who lost her daughter to bullet mean for someone else two years ago, held a party in Canarsie Park recently to honor those who put her daughter’s killers behind bars, according to PIX11.

“You feel like family now,” Brown told the detectives and assistant district attorneys attending the party. After the original shooting, Det. Philip Facenda of the 81st Precinct and Det. Thomas Pisano of Brooklyn North tracked

CONEY ISLAND — The Brooklyn Paper recently listed what it considers Coney Island’s top food spots. They included Al Cavallino, a pizza shop serving “high-end personal pizzas” that opened two months ago; Kitchen 21 in the former Childs Restaurant building, which serves traditional seaside fare such as burgers and seafood with a gourmet twist; Nathan’s Famous, whose hot dogs are synonymous with New York franks for many people; Williams Candy Shop, the home of candy apples and chocolate-covered marshmallows; and Ruby’s Bar and Grill, “your beer and snack go-to while on the beach.”

Conspicuous by its absence from this list was Gargiulo’s Italian Restaurant, a few blocks from the amusement district, which has been a high-end attraction for more than 100 years. 

CROWN HEIGHTS — MTA New York City Transit President Andy Byford thinks handwritten service announcements, such as the hastily scrawled “No Manhattan-Bound Trains” signs found at the President Street station on Crown Heights on Monday, make the subway system “look like a mom-and-pop shop.” The standard 8½-by-11-inch sheets of white paper were the only notices of the closure. Byford added that “Handwritten signs are anathema to me. They are an embarrassment,” according to the New York Post. Station managers have been reminded to stick to official signs. 

DYKER HEIGHTS — Five people were injured when a car in Dyker Heights jumped onto the sidewalk and crashed into a deli on Sunday morning, according to ABC7. The incident happened around 8:15 a.m. at the corner of 14th Avenue and 67th Street. Two people were injured seriously, and three others suffered minor injuries. The victims were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and Maimonides Medical Center. 

FORT GREENE — A restored 1850s townhouse in Fort Greene topped luxury real estate sales in Brooklyn last week, according to The Real Deal. The six-bedroom property was sold for $3.9 million. The second most expensive contract was for a condo at 347 Henry St. in Cobble Hill, which went for $3.7 million. Luxury sales in the borough were worth a combined total of $38.9 million,

PARK SLOPE — The Park Slope Civic Council and the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID are scheduled to present “Art Slope,” a presentation of film shorts, at the Old Stone House in Washington Park on July 19, starting at 8:30. Washington Park is just off Fifth Avenue and Third Street. Eight short films will be shown, and all are suitable for children, according to the Civic Council. 

RED HOOK — Forbes recently reviewed an electric car ride one of its writers took in Brooklyn. The electric car in particular was a Porsche Taycan, the luxury brand’s first battery-powered electric vehicle. This Taycan took part in last weekend’s electric-car races on the Red Hook waterfront. The ride wasn’t a cab ride, but a “demo ride” before Sunday’s race. “The Taycan seemed to handle remarkably well,” Forbes reported. “It was stable through corners with minimal body roll, although it did pitch forward under hand braking.” Bear in mind that through much of the demo ride, the Taycan was going forward at triple-digit speeds. 

SEA GATE — Registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who has been getting quite a lot of publicity lately due to his reputed ties to President Donald Trump, grew up in Sea Gate, a gated middle-class enclave at the western end of Coney Island, according to the Forward. The family lived across the street from Kenesses Israel, the area’s oldest synagogue. Epstein and his brother Mark were both gifted students in math, and Jeffrey himself was known as a talented musician. Like most kids in the neighborhood, he attended Lafayette High School, which was then largely Italian-American and Jewish.

Eventually, Epstein went to college, started teaching at the elite Dalton School and moved to Wall Street. “He never looked back,” the Forward said. 

WILLIAMSBURG — The 116 annual Giglio feast is underway in Williamsburg. The feast, dedicated to San Paolino, came to New York from Italy in 1903, according to PIX11. Part of it involves lifting a towering “Giglio” statue. In the past, there were waiting lists for people who wanted to help lift the Giglio. Seventh annual Play for Pink Golf Tournament raises money for cancer research

t was a perfect afternoon to golf for a very good cause on Saturday, July 13 at the seventh annual Play for Pink tournament at Dyker Beach Golf Course.

The fundraiser was sponsored by the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club with all proceeds going to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

According to event organizer and Brookridge Women’s Golf Club member Katherine Condon this was their best turnout so far.

“It feels awesome to be here,” Condon told this paper. “The weather is perfect and I believe this is our best event ever. We were sold out two weeks ago with 144 players of all levels—from expert to amateur — with men hitting the links as well as women.”

Conlon was also thrilled that this year’s event raised over $28,000, besting last year’s total of $25,000.

“It’s also wonderful that Dyker Beach Golf Course on their own ran different events to collect money for us,” continued Condon. “They donated over $6,300 towards this event and that to me is very special that they would do this for us. I love golf and

it’s just a great event overall.”

The day included a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf with a cart, hole in one contests and longest drive contests. After playing, golfers enjoyed lunch on the Dyker Beach Golf Club veranda with door prizes, raffles and gifts.

This year’s winners were Eddie Gardner, Victoria Gardner, Terry Tarangelo and Maddie Lopez.

t was a solemn night to reflect and recall loved ones lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and pay tribute to the heroic first responders who risked their lives to save lives at the twin towers.

Over 500 people attended the 12th Heroes Night celebration at the Wall of Remembrance at MCU Park in Coney Island on Friday,

July 12.

Those attending the service included families of first responders, 36 probationary firefighters carrying the American flag, the FDNY Ceremonial Unit and the FDNY Emerald Society Bagpipers.

The event allows the families of first responders to enjoy a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game following a prayer service at the wall with FDNY Chaplain Msgr.

Play Nice Theatre has begun its season of lighthearted musicals with positive, life-affirming messages about cooperation and kindness. And they’re looking for their July/August cast, musicians, and backstage helpers.

Relocated from Manhattan, this all-volunteer company’s rehearsals and meetings reflect their mission and message by encouraging its mixed-generation cast and crew (ages 6 to 106) to interact socially and share stories of their own lives on and off stage.

In a welcoming atmosphere, the experienced and new Play Nice actors and crew are encouraged to come early and linger after assigned rehearsal slots in order to get to know each other, help each other memorize their lines, do school homework and play games. Some may choose to help with scenery painting or prop-making.

All ticket sales from main stage shows ($10 admission) is donated to local charities, a prime motivation for many participants who find it rewarding to help raise money for those less fortunate through donating their time and talent.

According to theatre founder Rob Lester, the cast and crew are like a second family. “Working on a show with

friendly people is fun and satisfying,” he says.

The Brooklyn Eagle stopped by the new location at 89 Fourth Avenue, five blocks from Barclays Center, where the two-act musical “The Three Little Pigs Buy a Brownstone in Brooklyn” is running on weekends (2 p.m. Saturdays, 3:30 p.m.

The Eagle is mentioned prominently in the Brooklyn-centric script in Scene 6 and the newspaper is used as a prop as well. The show’s target audience is ages six and up, with plenty of humor adults will appreciate.

DASKALAKIS, James

— For the past 86 years, James Daskalakis enjoyed living in New York City. A child of the Depression, he regaled his family with stories of shining shoes for troops in Sheepshead Bay, Midwood High School in the 1940s, five-cent double-features at the movies, playing baseball in Florida for the minor leagues, jumping out of airplanes as a paratrooper and crazy exploits

with his brothers. Jim owned an auto collision business for many years. He had a great talent for fixing things and making them look brand-new. His skill in this was magical to see. In addition to baseball, he satisfied his competitive streak in a bowling league, playing a high-speed game of ping-pong, and beating everyone at pool, mahjong and gin rummy. In his later years, he loved beach days at Coney Island and the Rockaways or a dip in the pool. But most of all, he loved Annie. His wife and family were precious to him.

He worked hard to give them a wonderful life, leaving them with many joyous memories. He will be dearly missed.

Actor Vincent Pastore celebrated at Saturday block party in Gravesend

The neighborhood was out in force outside Our Lady of Grace Church on Saturday, July 13 to celebrate actor Vincent Pastore's birthday a little early at an old-fashioned Brooklyn block party.

Hosted by Gravesend-born actor and filmmaker William DeMeo and Michelle Frantzeskos’s Entertainment and Consultant Inc., there was food, music and dancing aplenty.

Classic cars lined up along the church’s parking lot. Maria “The Ice Cream Girl” Campanella’s ice cream truck, Stella’s Zeppoles, A&S Fine Store’s BBQ and Isabella Creations’ birthday cake provided the food.

Vendors onsite to sell their wares included Brooklyn Brand T-shirts, Wise Girl Wear perfume and Wise Guy Wear cologne. The music was powered by DJ’s McGee Too, Lenny Santawasso and Ross the Boss.

A $20 donation to the church was the price of admission.

Participants also had countless opportunities to take photos with and get autographs from celebrities, including Joseph D’Onofrio, Federico Castelluccio, Robert Gillings and Rick Borgia, as well as DeMeo and, of course, Pastore himself.

A few days prior to the event, DeMeo said he couldn’t wait to bring back, even if for a night, the tradition of Brooklyn block parties, something he said people always looked forward to in the summertime.

“I like events like these, when people can get a sense of how they grew up, coming back to just the way it was,” DeMeo said in a phone interview before the party. “It’s a great feeling to see people you haven’t seen in years. Lots of those who moved on have come back because they want to feel like they did when they were younger. We want to remember how we grew up.”

event, the hosts had a surprise not only for the guest of honor but also for the “Sopranos” fans in attendance who gathered around a Swan truck, a rented vehicle that provides high resolution screens for video and audio entertainment, to watch clips of Pastore’s most notable

performances on the TV series.

Later, Frances Mignano, a Brooklyn-born actress, producer and singer, took to the microphone to sing “Happy Birthday,” alongside a couple of hit songs, such as Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.”

Domini Monroe, a musical artist, and Biagio Benevenga, an Italian-American singer, drove the excitement of the night forward, as party-goers hit the dance floor.

Monroe performed her own hit songs, while Benevenga brought the crowd back to the ‘80s with Joe Dolce’s “Shaddap Your Face” and Julius La Rosa’s “Eh Cumpari.”

“Everybody from Brooklyn, from Michele, to Willy, my dear friend — he is like my son — thank you,” said Pastore. “You know, I met Willy many years ago. I was doing a project and Willy came up. He handed me a script called the ‘Wannabees.’

And I looked at him and said,

‘You don’t come up to an actor when he’s doing a movie and hand him a script.’ He then went on to do so many projects.”

He continued, “I was so happy that he always called me and said, ‘Hey, Vinny, you want to do this, or do you want to do that?’ He always gave me something different, and I amhappy to say that I am working with Willy on ‘Gravesend,’ his

new project.”

“Vinny is a class-act. He is such a talent,” said DeMeo, “And to have him in my projects, it’s so incredible. He’s a great guy, through and through.”

Pastore announced that his band, “Big Pussy’s Gangster Squad,” will be playing at the Bar 360 at Resorts World Casino on July 18, beginning at 8 p.m.

If you’re staycationing in Brooklyn, there’s a neighborhood to visit that you might not have thought of: Windsor Terrace.

It’s tucked between Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery. So if you’re going to the park’s BRIC Celebrate!

Brooklyn Festival, a stroll around Windsor Terrace’s tree-lined streets is an entertaining preliminary activity.

This is the 41st season of the free outdoor concerts at the Prospect Park Bandshell. BRIC is an arts incubator and presenter of free cultural programming.

If it’s not a concert night at Prospect Park, you can combine your Windsor Terrace stroll with a movie at Nitehawk Cinema. The theater is at 188 Prospect Park West, just steps away from the edge of Windsor Terrace.

People love this landmarked movie house because ...

A. You can drink while you watch the film and eat excellent food that you order from your theater seat.

B. There had been a theater on this spot since the 1920s.

Then a couple years ago, developer Hidrock Realty decided to build condos on the property with just a small movie theater.

There were widespread objections to the condo design.

The developer changed course and sold the building to investors connected to Nitehawk.

It already operated a popular drink-and-dine movie theater in Williamsburg.

Clouds add drama to this Windsor Terrace streetscape.

SPIDER-MAN’S HOUSE

LOVELY LIMESTONE ROWHOUSES IN THE SUMMER SUN A good place to start a walk around Windsor Terrace is outside the F train’s 15th StreetProspect Park Station. This puts

Welcome to leafy, lovely Windsor Terrace. you at the corner of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest, where a pair of eyecatching tall columns marks the entrance to the park.

There’s something else here that might confuse you if you see it on a map before you arrive — a circle that’s a square.

When you’re actually standing here, it makes perfect sense.

Across from Prospect Park there’s a traffic circle lined with handsome old-fashioned apartment buildings with curving facades. A small piece of land in the middle of the traffic circle has a World War I memorial called Bartel-Pritchard Square.

The square commemorates two Brooklyn soldiers who fought and died in that war: Emil Bartel, who’d lived on nearby Windsor Place, and his friend William Pritchard from Bushwick.

So. Let’s start walking already.

When you head down Prospect Park Southwest, there’s all kinds of architectural eye candy.

The great visuals start with limestone rowhouses with angled facades. They are adorned with elaborate decoration on the stonework above their windows and front doors.

On the other side of the street, Prospect Park’s tall trees and lush foliage brighten the scenery.

Further along, there’s an especially charming home at 85 Prospect Park Southwest. The old-fashioned shingled house is painted green and has window shutters, a mansard roof and a weather vane.

There are numerous interesting turns you can take off Prospect Park Southwest.

Whichever direction you go, you’ll find houses with nifty porches, some glassedin and some open-air.

Pretty porches are a feature on two single-block streets called Howard Place and Fuller Place that run parallel to each other between Windsor Place and Prospect Avenue.

In “The Amazing SpiderMan” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, a house on Fuller Place served as Peter Parker and Aunt May’s home, the website Movie-Locations.com reported.

Please don’t email me to tell me they lived in Queens. I know they did. The filmmakers used a Brooklyn location to depict that other borough.

A LANDMARKED FIRE HOUSE Another street where the rowhouses are particularly beautiful is Windsor Place.

And on Seeley Street, some homeowners have turned their front yards into picturesque mini-meadows of wildflowers.

Now let’s detour into the 19th century for a minute.

Lots were laid out and some streets were built in Windsor Terrace in the early 1850s, but neighborhood development got off to a slow start, a city Landmarks Preservation Commission report indicates.

Irish immigrants arrived after the Civil War. By 1890, there were about 150 houses in the neighborhood.

Rowhouses were built in the early 1900s. Developer William Calder constructed and sold 700 of them in a 17year span, the LPC report says.

The report’s main focus is the Engine Company 240/Battalion 48 Firehouse.

Danish-born architect Peter J. Lauritzen designed this Romanesque Revival-style FDNY treasure at 1307-1309 Prospect Ave. It was built in 1895. It’s an individual city landmark.

Prospect Park is Windsor Terrace’s giant backyard.

Check out Windsor Terrace — Continued from page 14INB — One vantage point from which you can see the firehouse is a pedestrian bridge you enter at the corner of Prospect and Greenwood avenues. The footbridge hangs over the Prospect Expressway, which split Windsor Terrace into two parts when it was built in the 1950s.

A BRONZE SCULPTURE OF LIBERTY Pedestrian bridges are such a novelty to me. This one’s got interesting stuff on both ends of it.

For instance, the ramp on the other side of the footbridge leads to the corner of Greenwood Avenue and East 5th Street.

There, at the edge of Greenwood Playground, there’s a monument to 47 soldiers and sailors from the neighborhood who died while serving in World War I. It’s a bronze relief sculpture of Liberty placing a palm frond — which symbolizes peace — on an altar.

An inscription on the altar says, “They gave their lives in the cause of Freedom.”

The artist who made the sculpture was Charles Keck. His best-known New York City work is the statue of Father Duffy beside the TKTS discount theater-tickets booth in Times Square.

On another corner of Greenwood Avenue and East 5th Street, there’s an ice cream stand that makes slushies out of the Italian ices that are on its menu. They’re staggeringly good.

The shop is called Kathy’s Gourmet Italian Ices and Ice Cream.

It takes a really large serving of Italian ice to make a slushie, in case you were wondering.

The homeowners on the corner of Caton Avenue and East 4th Street display a small cannon on their lawn that commemorates the Battle of Brooklyn.

Caton Avenue was a roadway called Martense Lane during the Revolutionary War. Hessian troops marched on it on their way to the battle.

AN INSTAGRAM-WORTHY PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS

This is Fuller Place, where scenes from “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel were filmed.

This pedestrian overpass casts some serious shadows.

There are so many beautiful blocks in this area.

After you weave your way around to the part of the neighborhood where the streets don’t have “East” in their names — which is on the other side of Vanderbilt Street — you’ll find another Prospect Expressway pedestrian bridge. Its entrance is at 10th Avenue and 19th Street.

This photogenic footbridge is enclosed with a semicircle of wire mesh. It’s like you’re walking through a tunnel, but up in the air.

When you get to the other side, on Tenth Avenue and 18th Street, the wire enclosure casts an abstract pattern of shadows on the sidewalk.

Speaking of photogenic, the brick rowhouses on nearby 17th Street are eye-pleasing.

At this point, you’re on the north end of the neighborhood — near Prospect Park West, where there are bars and restaurants for a bite to eat before the BRIC Celebrate! Brooklyn Festival.

If you stroll in the opposite direction and wind up on the south end of Windsor Terrace, there are fun spots to eat on Fort Hamilton Parkway.

There’s also some great housing to see — for instance distinctive redbrick rowhouses on Caton Avenue, which is Windsor Terrace’s southern border.

Cold war: Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory to open across from rival creamery Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is returning to the Fulton Ferry area by summer’s end.

The city has made it official: Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory is coming back to its home turf at the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

There, the artisanal ice cream maker will face off with Ample Hills Creamery — which took over the Marine Fire Boat Station where Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory’s shop was located for 17 years.

Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory had to move out in December because Brooklyn Bridge Park selected Ample Hills Creamery to be the new tenant of the 1920s building, which is located next to the Brooklyn Bridge and gets heavy foot traffic from park visitors.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission unanimously approved the design for Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory’s walk-up stand. It will be made out of a cargo container that will be installed in the parking lot of the restaurant at 14A Old Fulton St. The ice cream stand will share the site with a restaurant that belongs to River Cafe owner Buzz O’Keeffe. He and Mark Thompson co-own Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.

Thompson told the INBrooklyn after the LPC’s vote that he hopes to open the ice cream stand before the end of the summer.

He’s pleased to bring his ice cream shop back to the area.
