Bay Ridge is getting a new bike lane network after all

The Department of Transportation will move forward with a batch of proposed bike lanes for Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, despite the recommendations made by Community Board 10 earlier this week to nix or further study part of the plan.

At its last general meeting before breaking for the summer, the board voted not to approve at least half of a bike network expansion that aims to bring 10 new bike lanes to Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights.

In all, five stretches were approved by the panel and five were rejected or sent back to the agency for “further study.”

However, a DOT spokesperson confirmed to the Home Reporter on Thursday that it will be implementing all but one lane of the original suggested expansion by the end of this year. The expansion plan emerged after previous proposals were challenged by the board, and resulted from a broader engagement effort by the agency that included a town hall.

“These new bike lanes are critical in creating a safer and larger cycling network in Southern Brooklyn,” said the DOT representative, who added that the agency hopes to return in the future to discuss safety improvements for Third and Fourth Avenues.

DOT expects all of the lanes to be fully functional by the end of summer or the fall.

Nine new routes will be added: • 64th Street from Seventh to 14th Avenue • 66th Street from Seventh to 14th Avenue • Bay Ridge Parkway from Shore Road to 14th Avenue • Ovington Avenue across the Seventh Avenue overpass to connect with Seventh Avenue • 84th Street from Colonial Road to 14th Avenue westbound • 85th Street from Narrows Avenue to 14th Avenue eastbound • 11th Avenue southbound from 64th to 85th Street • 10th Avenue northbound

from 64th to 86th Street • Ridge Boulevard from 66th Street to Marine Avenue DOT has since said that, board opinion aside, it will move forward with all but the Third Avenue lane. That lane would have stretched from 68th Street to 79th Street northbound, and from 79th Street to Shore Road north and southbound.

The agency will also install a new lane on Dyker Place from 84th to 85th Street, a stretch that CB10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann said was never brought before the board. The board also previously voted to support a protected bike lane for a chunk of Seventh Avenue, but that was not on DOT’s list of confirmed routes coming.

Outgoing CB10 Chairperson Doris Cruz told the Home Reporter the local panel was taken back by the decision, which came before the board could even put their formal recommendation into writing.

While she said the board is “grateful” for DOT’s collaboration on the project, for the participation of the public and for the agency’s go-ahead on the approved routes, “We are surprised, however, that the DOT commissioner has opted to proceed with bicycle lanes on Ridge Boulevard before the conclusion of active DOT studies taking place at its north and south end.”

Also staggering, Cruz said, is “that DOT has chosen not to review or consider the safety concerns raised regarding 84th and 85th Streets and Bay Ridge Parkway. Thus, CB10 will forward its recommendation outlining those safety concerns to the attention of [DOT Commissioner] Polly

Trottenberg.”

Both Cruz and Traffic and Transportation Committee Chairperson Jayne Capetanakis urged board members Monday to keep an open mind, but also to remember that it is the group’s duty to keep the needs of “all of those who live in the district” in mind.

“No plan is ever going to be perfect, but we have to start somewhere,” Capetanakis said. “Safety for everyone is our ultimate goal.”

Some local residents — board members and nonmembers, alike — have said the plan as proposed would increase congestion and put cyclists and pedestrians in danger. Merchants on Third Avenue have also expressed that a lane on the strip would likely interfere with deliveries to stores on the busy commercial corridor and could lead to mass confusion for merchants, delivery workers, bike riders and pedestrians.

Following the board’s vote earlier this week, State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, Councilmember Justin Brannan and Assemblymember Mathylde Frontus wrote to DOT Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Keith Bray on Tuesday to express their disapproval of the board’s decision.

Gounardes told the Home Reporter on Thursday he’s glad to see the agency “prioritizing safe streets for everyone.”

“Not just cars, not just bikes, not just pedestrians, but everyone,” he said in an email. “Given that we all already share the road, it’s our responsibility to ensure that we we build the safest possible infrastructure. This plan was the result of a yearlong visioning process and we look forward to having the DOT

Beckmann, the board’s district manager, said she hopes DOT will revise the lane proposal to integrate the community’s latest input.

“This began as a collabora-

tive effort after the board’s rejection of [a route] on 92nd Street — which was based on cyclist and resident opposition for safety reasons. What we did was come together and work collaboratively — with

residents, with cyclists and with the DOT — on expanding the bike network,” she told the Home Reporter.

“We hope we can continue that collaboration. We hope DOT will reconsider.”

It’s official! City designates Doctors’ Row as historic district

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commiss-

ion voted unanimously on Tuesday, June 25 to designate Doctors’ Row, the famous Bay Ridge block known for its unique architecture and pristine beauty, as a historic district.

“The block really does stand out,” Landmarks Preservation Commission Chairperson Sarah Carroll said before the vote was taken.

Applause erupted in the meeting hall after the vote, according to one of the attendees.

Doctors’ Row, which earned its nickname thanks to the many physicians who have kept their offices there over the years, is located on Bay Ridge Parkway between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

It will now be known as the Bay Ridge Parkway — Doctors’ Row Historic District.

The decision by the Landmarks Preservation Commission means the facades of the buildings on the block, some of which date back to 1906, will be protected and preserved.

Linda Assini, co-founder of the Bay Ridge Parkway 400 Block Association, the group that spearheaded the effort to win historic district status for the street, called the vote a victory for the entire community.

“Designating Doctors’ Row will undoubtedly add to maintaining the unique character of Bay Ridge,” Assini stated.

“Landmarks’ designation means we now have an army of preservationists to help us protect the integrity and beauty of Doctors’ Row now and for future generations,” said Susan Brown, who lives on Doctors’ Row. With the vote, Doctors’ Row becomes the first historic district in Bay Ridge. There are three city landmarks in the neighborhood — Fort Hamilton, the Bennett-Farrell House at 119 95th St. and the Gingerbread House at 29 83rd St. — but no historic districts, until now.

“This is a great day for Bay Ridge and for Southern Brooklyn,” Brian Kaszuba, chairperson of Community Board 10’s Zoning and Land Use Committee, told the Home Reporter following the vote. “The city is taking notice of the great buildings and architecture we have.”

Community Board 10 fully supported the efforts spearheaded by the Bay Ridge Parkway 400 Block Association to convince the city to designate the street as a historic district. State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and

Councilmember Justin Brannan also endorsed the proposal.

Gounardes, who once served as president of the Bay Ridge Historical Society, said the vote is reason to celebrate.

“History and architecture buffs can celebrate the designation of Doctors’ Row as a historic district.” Noting that the strip was “Built at the turn of the 20th century, when transit options were turning Bay Ridge from suburban to urban,” Gounardes said, “This is a great way to celebrate the unique history of Bay Ridge and the medical professionals who have lived here — past and present.”

“Doctor’s Row has long been an important piece of how people in Bay Ridge have come to know, love and identify with their neighborhood. It is an honor to be in office at this time, not only to help facilitate but to simply witness Bay Ridge’s very first historic district come to be,” Brannan said in a statement.

Kelly Carroll, director of advocacy for the Historic Districts Council, provided expertise and technical assistance to Bay Ridge Parkway residents throughout the process. The Historic Districts Council is a nonprofit organi-

zation that advocates for the preservation of notable buildings in New York City.

The Bay Ridge Parkway — Doctors’Row Historic District is a block of 54 row houses constructed between 1906 and 1913, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The block was constructed by one builder who used only two architects. The limestone row houses were built in the Renaissance Revival style with some elements of the Colonial Revival style. The block is architecturally consistent, experts said. The buildings are all two stories tall with a basement and the block still looks very much as it did in the first decade of the 20th century, according to experts.

History buffs, architecture fans and housing preservationists have marveled at the beautiful limestone row houses on the tree-lined street.

Assini hinted that Tuesday’s vote could be just the beginning.

“We look forward to working with LPC in further expanding historic district status to include other worthy blocks,” she said.

Congressperson Ilhan Omar supporters, critics clash in Bay Ridge

Protesters and counter-protesters set up near the Bay Ridge office of Rep. Max Rose on June 23, with one group demanding that Rose censure fellow Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar and the other voicing support of the embattled Minnesota lawmaker.

The original protest was called by Americans Against Antisemitism, a new group founded by former Democratic Assemblymember Dov Hikind, who represented Boro Park before retiring from the state legislature. The protesters — whose leaders also included Brooklyn Reform Party Chair Bob Capano and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa — urged Rose to call for Omar, who has been accused of anti-Semitism, to be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The group opposing Omar, numbering around 20 protesters, gathered on the corner of

Third Avenue and 82nd Street.

A crowd of counter-protesters — around three times the size of the original protest — gathered on the opposite side of the street, voicing support of Omar.

In February, Omar apologized for a tweet in which she said supporting Israel was “all about the Benjamins,” which critics said was an antiSemitic remark. Rose criticized Omar on Twitter for her words and later hosted a town hall on the topic, at which Rose apologized to his constituents on behalf of Omar but said he did not support her removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“We are faced today … with a break-out of anti-Semitism like we’ve never seen before in my life,” Hikind told the Home Reporter. “With the things that [Omar] has said, she does not belong on the Foreign Affairs Committee.”

Counter-protesters adopted the same chant as the protesters at one point, with both parties yelling “Max Rose, do the right

thing” in tandem. Led by a coalition of Bay Ridge grassroots organizations which included Yalla Brooklyn, a group focused on getting Arab and Muslim residents in Southern Brooklyn out to vote, counter-protesters came out to support Omar and encourage Rose to support her.

“Max Rose needs to understand, he has the largest Palestinian community, the largest Muslim community in one district, here, in his district,” President of Yalla Brooklyn Murad Awawdeh told the Home Reporter.

Awawdeh said that counterprotesters came to stop Islamophobia from being spread. He cited a recent hate crime in Sheepshead Bay, where someone spray-painted the message ‘Kill Arabs’on a bus shelter, saying that “it’s because of people like Dov Hikind that things like that can happen.

“We can’t stand and allow someone to come in here and spew more hatred in our communities,” Awawdeh said.

On June 19, Community School District 20 middle school students gathered at MCU Park in Coney Island to “Escape the Vape.” The schools brought bands, cheerleaders and flags to the arena where students and staff were entertained while listening to speakers explain how dangerous vaping can be.

Entertainer Guy Zoda, better known as King Henry, was there, and the Dyker Heights

Intermediate School band played “The Star Spangled Banner” before the Ditmas I.S. 62 cheerleaders took to the stage to entertain the audience. The students also participated in a mascot race.

District 20 Superintendent Karina Costantino spoke at the event, along with a series of anti-vape experts . . . including a robot. Michael Davoli from the American Cancer Society said that vaping was poison and just as harmful as smoking tobacco cigarettes.

New York City Department of Health experts Joel Bhuiyan,

Jessica Ingram-Bellamy, Elyse Mallin, Jonathan Thornton, Nicole Miller, Abdul Usman and Deidre Sully also spoke at the event.

McKinley Principal Janice Geary was delighted with what the rally represented.

“We celebrated life-long learning and promoted good health for everyone,” said Geary.

McKinley seventh-grade student Farwa Tashin felt that the event was worthwhile.

“I learned vaping is worse than smoking. Long-term vaping can affect our health later in life,” Tashin said.

City bucks coming back big-time to Bay Ridge Shore Road turns into runner’s

The new $92.8 billion city budget approved by the City Council on June 19 includes important items to help Southwest Brooklyn residents at the grassroots level, according to Councilmember Justin Brannan, who said he worked hard to ensure that schools, parks and nonprofit social service groups in his district got their fair share of funding.

“Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach and Bensonhurst did very well in this budget,” Brannan told the Home Reporter in an email. “We were able to secure major investments in our public schools, libraries, playgrounds and parks.”

Fiscal Year 2020 begins July 1.

The budget includes $240,000 toward sanitation services in the neighborhoods Brannan, a

Democrat, represents.

Brannan also secured $500,000 for NYPD security cameras around the Bay Ridge Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District.

Thirteen public schools in Brannan’s district will get a share of $3.4 million for items like technology upgrades, auditorium renovations, playground repairs and security cameras.

The city is putting $250,000 toward a full renovation of the community meeting room at the McKinley Library on Fort Hamilton Parkway.

Brannan secured funding for local parks, including: $5.4 million for renovation of J.J. Carty Park, $3.4 million for renovation of Vinland Playground, $500,000 for a new dog run in John Paul Jones Park and $200,000 for new trees and tree guards at Owls Head Park.

Among the nonprofit organizations for which Brannan

secured city funding are the Federation of Italian-American Organizations ($225,000), the Arab-American Association of New York ($225,000), NIA Community Services Network ($225,000), Guild for Exceptional Children ($75,000) and Reaching-Out Community Services ($30,000).

Brannan said $250 million was added to reserves for a “rainy day” fund.

The budget agreement between Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson was announced on June 14 and the Council approved the fiscal package less than a week later.

The budget includes funding for 200 additional social workers in public schools and monies to build senior housing.

“The Fiscal Year 2020 Adopted Budget creates greater fairness for all New Yorkers,” de Blasio said in a statement.

Shore Road Park looks like the starting line of the New York City Marathon every Saturday with runners stretching and warming up.

But the athletes who gather in the park at 79th Street each weekend aren’t training to break any world records.

They just want to have fun getting in shape.

Dozens of people take part in what has become a weekly run/walk in Shore Road Park sponsored by the New York Road Runners, the same folks behind the New York City Marathon.

The exercise program, called the NYRR Open Run, is open to all residents and designed to encourage people

to get moving and enjoy nature, according to NYRR spokesperson Matthew Singer.

“Participants are encouraged to run, jog or stroll, and are free to bring children in strollers, or their dog on a leash,” said Singer.

The run is 5K, starting on Shore Road and 79th Street.

“We run down to Xaverian High School (located at 71st Street) and over to the other side of the ballfields and up to 89th Street. Once around is one mile,” Bay Ridge resident and Community Board 10 member June Johnson said.

Don’t worry if you don’t finish the course. Not everyone does, according to Johnson.

“Some only run/walk half. What I like is that everyone is so friendly

and kind to each other,” Johnson said.

The program is a collaboration between NYRR and the Parks Department’s Community Parks Initiative. It was launched in St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx in 2015 and has since grown to 19 parks. In Brooklyn, Marine Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Canarsie Park, Highland Park and Shore Road Park are all open run sites.

“We’ve had nearly 12,000 unique participants of NYRR Open Run since we started in 2015, including approximately 5,000 from the five Brooklyn sites. Per week we see, on average, more than 700 Open Run participants,” Singer said.

A member of the Air Force assigned to Fort Hamilton Army Base was arrested in Brooklyn in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, 37-year-old Alla Ausheva, also an Air Force member assigned to Fort Hamilton, and their young children inside their Staten Island home on the morning of June 22.

Authorities arrested 36-yearold Shane Walker on charges of murder, manslaughter, arson and criminal possession of a weapon after he was spotted by cops in Brooklyn on Sunday morning. He was taken to Maimonides Medical Center for evaluation.

Walker is charged with killing Ausheva and their children, three-year-old Elia Walker and two-year-old Ivan Walker.

CROOK CANNED: A crook was seen trying to break into a home on Bay Ridge Parkway between Sixth and Seventh Avenues on June 24. Cops say that at around 7:15 p.m., the suspect took a garbage can from in front of the home, stood on it and tried to open the front living room window. One of the homeowners, a 61-year-old woman, saw the perp looking inside the home. When she approached the window, the would-be intruder took off on foot eastbound on Bay Ridge Parkway toward Seventh Avenue. No arrests have been made.

MISSING CAR: A car parked near 72nd Street and Shore Road was stolen on June 24, after its owner, a 38year-old man, parked it two days earlier at around 10:30 p.m. He last saw it the day after he parked it at 3 p.m.

When he went to move the car for street cleaning on Monday at 11:30 a.m., it was gone. No arrests have been made.

SLASHED: A 19-year-old man was slashed by another man near 67th Street and 14th Avenue on June 23. Cops say the victim, who was drunk,

According to the New York Daily News, Ausheva won a green card lottery and had been invited with 24 other military members to the White House to be sworn in as a U.S citizen.

“We are in the early stages of an investigation, which is ongoing at this time.” Corey said.

“The medical examiner will determine the cause of death; however, we are treating this as a homicide investigation.” told them that the assailant, described to be in his 30s, was looking for help because he claimed a group of men was trying to jump him. According to police, the victim reported that the unknown perp grabbed a kitchen knife and slashed his arm. Later, cops found pepper spray and the knife at the scene. No arrests have been made.

TWO CROOKS TRY TO BURGLARIZE BAY RIDGE SCHOOL: Two crooks attempted to burglarize a school near Fourth Avenue and 95th Street on June 24 at around 10:15 a.m.

According to the police, the suspects broke a metal gate protecting a window leading to the auditorium. Surveillance footage shows the perps kicking and breaking two locked doors and throwing an air conditioner off the roof. No property was taken; however the crooks did around $250 worth of damage. No arrests have been made.

The Brooklyn District Attorney has begun an investigation into the other cases of a Brooklyn cop who was indicted Wednesday on a perjury charge for allegedly lying about getting almost run over.

Michael Bergman was suspended without pay from the NYPD’s Grand Larceny Division after he was arrested and indicted last week for the alleged lie.

On a criminal complaint and in grand jury testimony, Bergman claimed a Sunset Park burglary suspect drove a car at him and his partner, causing him to dive to the ground and suffer injuries. But surveillance video obtained in May by the DA’s Office showed that the car did not come close to hitting Bergman or his partner.

The indictment has called into question the legitimacy of Bergman’s testimony in other cases.

“Following last week’s indictment, our Law Enforcement Accountability Bureau has already started a review of this officer’s past cases in collaboration with the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau,” a spokesperson for the Brooklyn DA told this paper in a statement.

Public defenders at the Legal Aid Society echoed that the DA’s probe was necessary, calling for a review of every case that Bergman worked on.

“This misconduct is unconscionable, and it is not the first time that NYPD Officer Bergman has been accused of flouting the law and disregarding New Yorkers’ constitutional rights,” said Tina Luongo, attorney-in-charge of the crim-

10K ROBBERY: A 42year-old man was attacked on June 22 by another man who stole $10,000 from him as he was on his way to the bank to make a deposit. The victim, the manager of a convenience store, had driven to the bank, near 85th Street and 23rd Avenue, and was walking out of the parking lot when the unknown man punched him in the head and grabbed the bag containing the cash. The thief then got into a gray SUV and fled eastbound on 85th Street, heading toward 24th Avenue, where he turned to get onto 83rd Street. No arrests have been made.

A review of data by the Legal Aid Society and shared with this paper showed that Bergman was an arresting officer in 55 of their cases. He was also a defendant in a 2015 lawsuit that claimed he and other officers “illegally trespassed, searched, invaded, intimidated and violated the plaintiff’s civil rights,” according to the lawsuit.

The suit was settled for $175,000.

The Legal Aid Society does not handle all of Brooklyn’s criminal cases, and it is not

clear how many total cases there are in which Bergman was the arresting officer.

“Officer Bergman’s actions led to the wrongful arrest of an innocent New Yorker, and we fear that this incident isn’t an outlier,” Luongo said. “If other New Yorkers have been wronged by Officer Bergman, we need to know. This behavior must not be tolerated,” she said.

Bergman, represented by John Tynan, was released without bail Wednesday by Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun. He is due back in court Aug. 7.

Avenue and 64th Street was assaulted by another man who attempted to steal his cellphone on June 19 at around 6:25 a.m. The assailant hit the victim, 51, in the back of his head and tried unsuccessfully to nab the phone. The victim fell to the floor. When he looked up, he recognized the assailant as a former employee from years ago. Nothing was stolen and the perp fled westbound on 65th Street in a red Ford. No arrests have been made.

Benson Avenue. The other suspect was apprehended at the scene.

MAN BUSTED IN ALLEGED ROBBERY: A 25-year-old man was arrested after he and another suspect allegedly attacked and attempted to rob a 36-year-old man at Bay 14th Street and Benson Avenue on June 19. Cops allege that at around 3:30 a.m., the suspect approached the victim and pushed him, demanding his bag and bike. The victim refused and the second perp fled on foot towards

SMALL TALKING CROOKS: A pair of crooks stole a cellphone from an 18year-old woman, whom they had just chatted up, at Bay Parkway and 73rd Street on June 23 at around 9:55 p.m.

Cops say one of the perps snatched the phone from the victim’s hands as they were talking. The two thieves then fled north on Bay Parkway on foot. No arrests have been made.

TEEN PUNCHED, ROBBED OF BIKE: A 13year-old boy was attacked by a 16-year-old boy, who stole his $750 bike, at 15th Avenue and 72nd Street on June 17.

Reports say that the teen punched the victim in the chest and rode away with his bike westbound on 72nd Street. No arrests have been made.

Coney Island got wild for 37th annual Mermaid Parade

undreds of thousands of people de s c ende d on Coney Island Saturday afternoon, June 22, for the annual event that draws the creatures of the sea out onto land in a celebration of eccentrics, art and summer.

The 37 th annual Mermaid Parade took over the neighborhood’s amusement district, featuring revelers decked out in seafaring attire and reportedly drawing over 800,000 people to Coney. It is considered the largest artistic parade in the country.

Zigun, the permanently unelected mayor of Coney Island, founded the event in 1983 as a way to pay homage to the neighborhood’s art community. This year, he welcomed two Coney Island natives back to the shore as the parade’s King Neptune and Queen Mermaid:

The two are children of the iconic folk singer Woody Guthrie, and they are the first king and queen actually to have lived on Mermaid Avenue.

“We’re kind of like amphibious. We crawled in from the sea and got as far as Mermaid Avenue.”

and sea creatures that keeps up for hours after the parade concludes. Those people, Arlo Guthrie said, are one of the reasons his father loved living in Coney Island.

“He loved being here among all the regular people of the world who seemed to be coalescing right here in this one spot,” Guthrie said.

News Around the Boro BAY RIDGE — Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-Southern Brooklyn-Staten Island) last week applauded State Senate Democrats for pulling the Automatic Voter Registration Bill after finding a critical typo in the measure that would have forced non-citizens to register despite their ineligibility. The measure would have enabled agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Office of Children and Family Services, the Department of Health, the Department of Veterans Services and the Department of Labor to register residents to vote automatically. Malliotakis protested the passage of the bill, calling it the “Automatic Voter Fraud” bill. 

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Police have released video footage of a Citi Bike-riding gunman who shot a 24-yearold man and a 23-year-old woman in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The suspect was allegedly cruising on his bike heading eastbound at Lexington Avenue and Tompkins Avenue on June 7 when he took out his firearm and shot six rounds, striking both victims in the legs, according to police. Cops are not sure whether they were the gunman’s intended victims. 

BROWNSVILLE — A retired police officer was stabbed on Sunday night during an apparent road rage incident in Brownsville, according to the New York Post. A confrontation took place near Alabama and Livonia avenues, and the retired officer was stabbed in the arm. He is expected to be okay. The attacker was taken into custody, police said. 

CANARSIE — A Brooklyn writer is making his directorial debut with a film being shot partially at Egoli Barbershop on Seaview Avenue in Canarsie, according to News 12.

Moise Morancy’s “When a Tree Falls” focuses on a character named Calvini, who is played by Morancy, who finds out his stepfather is a drug dealer. Morancy said some of the actors are from the neighborhood, and the film addresses many issues in the black community. Morancy has had acting roles on “SVU’ and “Blue Bloods.” 

CONEY ISLAND — The Brooklyn Historical Society will partner with the Brooklyn Cyclones for the minor-league team’s home game against the West Virginia Black Bears on July 13. CROWN HEIGHTS — Someone placed a noose outside a Brooklyn church last weekend in what is being probed as a possible bias crime, according to the New York Post. The noose, a symbol of black people being lynched in the South, was found Saturday on bushes outside the United House of

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A three-story, early 20th century building in Downtown Brooklyn with terra-cotta figures may be replaced by a 23-story tower, according to Curbed. The building, at 308-310 Livingston St., was built in 1911. In October, architecture firm Fogarty Finger filed an application to build a 23-story building, and in May the firm filed another application for full demolition. The current building was once used as a meeting place for followers of the Bahai religion. The new building would have 160 units, a rooftop deck and a fitness center. 

EAST FLATBUSH — Brownstoner recently looked back at four of the real-estate website’s featured Brooklyn listings from six months ago, focusing on homes in East Flatbush, Windsor Terrace and Ditmas Park. A two-story brick row-

house in East Flatbush sold in May for $665,000, which was $44,000 below the asking price. A fifth-floor co-op in Brooklyn Heights, which has four rooms and views of trees and neighboring gardens, sold for $1.31 million, $60,000 above the asking price. Another building, a circa-1900 limestone townhouse in Windsor Terrace that faces Prospect Park, sold in February for $2,787 million, $8,000 below the asking price. 

EAST NEW YORK — A billboard is going up in Brooklyn to help police find a boy who went missing more than nine years ago, according to CBSNewYork. The billboard, which is located near the apartment building on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York that was his home when he disappeared, shows a photo of how he looked at age 7 when he disappeared and a computer-aided image showing how he would look today, at age 16. Investigators believe he may still be in Brooklyn, police said. 

FORT GREENE — The Fort Greene Park Jazz Festival is scheduled to come to the park on the afternoon of July 27. The Eric Frazier Sextet will be performing live. The sextet consists of Eric Frazier, vocals and percussion; David Lee Jones, sax; Charles Carrington, keyboard; Wayne Jeffrey, guitar; Hillard Greene, bass; and Lon Ivey, drums. 

GREENPOINT — Comedian Louis C.K. received a standing ovation when he made a surprise appearance at Skankfest NYC, a three-day comedy festival held last weekend at Brooklyn Bazaar in Greenpoint, according to the show-business website TMZ. He opened by making jokes about the various controversies surrounding him. In 2017, he admitted that he’d exposed himself to several women. In late 2018, he got into trouble by making jokes about the Parkland school massacre. 

OCEAN HILL —Permits have been filed for an eight-story, mixed-use building at 1520 Broadway in Ocean Hill, according to New York YIMBY. The building, on the corner of Hancock Street and Broadway, would be near the J train’s Halsey Street subway station. The developer of record is MacQuesten Development, while the architect is listed as GLUCK+. The building would contain 108 apartments, probably rentals, as well as 9,002 feet of commercial space. 

An influx of activity is slated to take place in and along the Gowanus Canal in the coming months, as dormant bridges are raised and numerous barges maneuver along the narrow waterway in preparation for a massive cleanup of the canal. For the full story, visit brooklyneagle.com.

WILLIAMSBURG — Japanese artist Takashi Murakami visited Williamsburg on Friday to unveil a new sculpture and mural for “Beyond the Streets,” a Williamsburg street festival that features 150 artists in over 100,000 square feet.

The exhibition also includes work by Shepard Fairey, Keith Haring and Jenny Holzer, as well as an archive of Beastie Boys artifacts, according to the New York Post. Chris Rock and LL Cool J were at the opening, and both visited the show’s tattoo parlor, called Magic Touch.

This group exhibition mines the archive and examines the rich history of sculpture and three-dimensional papermaking at Dieu Donné.

Since 1976, Dieu Donné has been on the forefront of an artistic movement to challenge the notion of paper as mere support of the image. The choice to create dimensional works in paper pulp is not just for its aesthetic and physical qualities but for the powerfully subversive, humorous, political, and emotional associations that paper and the printed word embody. DON’T FOLLOW THE WIND: NON-VISITOR CENTER Beyond the threshold of the inhabitable, how does culture contest the crippling effects of long-term catastrophe? Don’t Follow the Wind is a project situated inside the radioactive Fukushima exclusion zone in Japan, the inaccessible area surrounding the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, established in the wake of the 2011 disaster that contaminated

the environment separating residents from their homes, land, and community. As radiation knows no borders, transported on wind and water currents, it is a form of contamination that implicates us all in its unseen isotopic presence.

The exhibition draws its title from the rallying words of transgender artist and activist Marsha P. Johnson, underscoring both the precariousness and the vitality of LGBTQ+ communities. The exhibition presents twenty-eight LGBTQ+ artists born after 1969 whose works grapple with the unique conditions of our political time, and question how moments become monuments.

Weeksville Heritage Center is a cultural jewel, a living reminder that an independent free black community thrived in preCivil War Brooklyn.

Its landmarked houses, powerful witnesses to history, have been on my mind in recent weeks as the center’s executives carried out an emergency CrowdRise funding campaign to keep the Crown Heights museum open.

The oldest of these houses on Hunterfly Road dates back to the 1840s.

On June 14, there was dramatic news: The city designated Weeksville Heritage Center as a member of the Cultural Institutions Group.

This was the first time in 20 years a new member had been brought into the group. Membership affords a real shot at financial stability through unrestricted operating grants from the city Department of Cultural Affairs, which also pays the institutions' heat, light and water bills.

City Councilmembers Laurie Cumbo and Robert Cornegy and Council Speaker Corey Johnson and the Brooklyn Black Elected Officials urged the de Blasio Administration to make it happen.

The designation made Weeksville Heritage Center the first black Brooklyn institution on the group’s roster — which was a “huge honor,” the center’s President and Executive Director Rob Fields told me in an interview that day.

Weeksville Heritage Center is the crown jewel of Weeksville the neighborhood.

Nearby, there’s a metal sculpture hanging over the door of 1779-1781 Pacific St. The sculpture depicts six industrial workers.

This is the Piscopo & Nogara Iron Works.

Nogara Group bought the site for $70,000 in 2006 and constructed the building, city Finance Department and Buildings Department records indicate.

TWO FINE FIREHOUSES

IRONWORKS NEAR THE COMMUNITY GARDENS So. Did you know Weeksville is used as a neighborhood name even today?

The City of New York includes it on its map of Community District 8, which Community Board 8 serves, along with North Crown Heights and Prospect Heights.

Weeksville is located within the easternmost section of Crown Heights on the border of Brownsville.

Weeksville the neighborhood consists of the blocks surrounding Weeksville the museum, which is at 158 Buffalo Ave. If you start walking on Atlantic Avenue and stroll the streets parallel to it between Troy and Ralph avenues, you can’t go wrong.

Weeksville’s got lots of beautiful old housing stock.

One of the things you’ll see on a Weeksville walk is Imani Community Garden II. It’s on the corner of Pacific Street and Schenectady Avenue.

It’s the nearby neighbor of Imani Community Garden, which is the home of the chickens I recently photographed.

As you keep walking, soon you’ll find an old-fashioned firehouse at 1472 Bergen St. This is the Rescue Company No. 2 building, constructed in 1893.

There’s a painting on the garage door dedicated to the memory of Firefighter Louis J. Valentino Jr. He died in 1996 while searching for wounded firefighters during a blaze at an illegal chop shop in Flatlands.

As you know if spend time in Brooklyn’s waterfront neighborhoods, Louis J. Valentino Jr. Park and Pier in Red Hook is named for him. It’s a good place to go for views of the Statue of Liberty.

The cast concrete and terra-cotta building is designed as a training facility, with features like a bridge, a manhole and a trench that simulates a subway tunnel.

But back to Weeksville. Further down Bergen Street, on the corner of Ralph Avenue, Engine 227’s eye-catching firehouse can be found.

A CHURCH THAT WAS A STATION ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD The streets of Weeksville are dotted with beautiful churches.

For instance, there’s Berean Baptist Church at 1635 Bergen St. The portion of it that was built in 1894 stood in shadow the afternoon I took my Weeksville stroll. So instead of photographing it, I snapped a picture of the more modern portion of this house of worship, which was constructed in 1960.

The church was established in 1850 — and was a station on the Underground Railroad, its website says.

A second church that caught my eye was the Greater Bibleway Temple on the corner of Rochester Avenue and Lincoln Place.

The late-afternoon sun lit up its pale brick facade.

The Bibleway Church has been located at this building since 1973, its website says.

The Maynard Co-Ops at 1509 Bergen St. have eye-catching window bays.

ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL IS BEING TURNED INTO A NURSING HOME

Here’s a glimpse of Berean Baptist Church.

Architectural history expert Suzanne Spellen said in a 2014 Brownstoner.com story that the stunning church at 261 Rochester Ave. was built as Temple Petach Tikvah in 1914 and 1915.

The day I took my stroll, athletes were busy at St. John’s Park, which is packed with playing fields. A colorful mural on the back wall of St. John’s Recreation Center brightened the scenery.

I didn’t go inside the venerable rec center, which has been in existence since 1956. But the city Parks Department’s website mentions there’s a swimming pool, which sounds pretty great this time of year.

I saw all kinds of lovely old-fashioned housing stock in Weeksville.

For example, there’s a hilly block on Lincoln Place between Buffalo and Ralph avenues that’s very picturesque.

And when I strolled down Prospect Place, I got an eyeful of a bright new facade on the mammoth building that was formerly St. Mary’s Hospital.

Centers Health Care is converting the seven-story building into a 281-bed nursing home, a 2016 project recommendation written

by Borough President Eric Adams says.

The property, whose address is 170 Buffalo Ave., was the last Catholic hospital left in Brooklyn when it closed in 2005.

The building was constructed in the 1970s. Before that, St. Mary’s facility on this site had been built in the 1870s.

On June 26, 1844, President John Tyler married Julia Gardiner in New York City. In its June 27 edition, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The bride is said to be accomplished, beautiful, interesting, an heiress, and 22 — the President, on the other hand, is known to be as homely as a brush fence, and 55 years of age, being a difference of 33. Some of his children, therefore, are probably many years older than their step-mother.�

He and his first wife Letitia (1790-1842) had eight children. He and Julia Gardiner had seven children. Their son Lyon (1853-1935) was married twice, the second time to Sue Ruffin, who was 35 years his junior. Lyon and Sue had three sons, two of whom — Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. (born 1924) and Harrison Ruffin Tyler (born 1928) — are still living.

OPINION A SALUTE TO MIKE LONG

L

ast week was a big week of events, with something happening every night. For me, the highlight of the week was the State Conservative Party Dinner at the Sheraton Time Square honoring Mike Long.

Since taking over for Mike as party state chairperson in late February, this annual dinner has been a big part of my focus. I wanted to get it right. After all, Mike was the state chairperson for 30 years — the longest tenure of a New York State party chair of any party in the history of the state. I think working closely with our party’s small staff, we got it right.

The crowd was big, 400 people in fact, sprawling throughout the hotel’s main ballroom among 33 regular tables and a single special table of 45 for Mike and his wife Eileen, and their immediate family.

That’s right. Mike and Eileen have nine children and 25 grandchildren and great grandchildren, together with wives, husbands and

other close family.

We sat 45 people at a single table in the middle running from the dais to the back. There was a two-tier dais, something you do not see much of these days, that had a bevy of legendary conservatives on it.

Former Sen. and Judge James Buckley presented Mike with the party’s first annual James Buckley Award. At 96 years of age, this soft-spoken gentleman mesmerized the crowd with his comments on the current and future state of our nation.

Al D’Amato, who was first elected by his Conservative Party vote, thanked Mike for their longtime friendship and then surprised the crowd with a rallying speech for change. Former longtime State Sen. and Party Chairperson Serph Maltese spoke warmly of Mike and their many years working hand in hand as party leaders.

With both having served in the Marines, Serph

tugged on an emotional cord when he turned to Mike and exchanged a salute with him. Dennis Vacco, another individual who was elected on the Conservative Party line, also thanked Mike for his advice and friendship over the years.

Many former gubernatorial candidates were on the dais. Gov. Pataki, who was out of the country, had his former Chief of Staff John Cahill read a letter of praise.

Judge Jeannine Pirro was on the dais and although she did not speak earlier, she mixed among the crowd, taking many pictures with guests.

In fact, there were Fox and other conservative media personalities throughout the ballroom.

Master of Ceremonies Jim Kerr read parts of a Congressional Resolution honoring Mike placed into the record by Rep. Elise Stefanik. Of course, there was a letter of praise from President Trump. Mike and the president have known each other for several decades.

It was a great night for Mike and a great night for the Conservative Party.

The letter was warm and personal, reflecting their longtime relationship.

Mike’s remarks were a combination of a thank-you, reflections on the party over the years and comments on the current state of politics in our state and nation.

He gave his wife Eileen credit for making so much possible when he often needed to work at the family business or on Conservative Party matters. Eileen, who sat with Mike on the dais, received a gigantic cheer when she was introduced.

ast week, the state legislature adjourned the most productive legislative session in New York history. Democrats used their majorities in both chambers this year to pass over 300 bills that originated on the left. As the 2019 legislative session closed, 47 of those had already been signed into law by the governor.

A sweeping package of rent reforms and tenant protections ended provisions that had allowed landlords to raise rents up to 20 percent each time a unit became vacant and steadily decreased the inventory of stabilized units. The new legislation also extended and made permanent rent regulation laws that have been expiring every four to eight years for decades.

Lawmakers eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses, greatly

reducing the chance that someone would spend the night in jail for a minor offense. With the decriminalization of marijuana, possession of small amounts no longer carry the possibility of jail time and those formerly convicted on marijuana possession can file for expungement of the charge from their records.

In the age of the #MeToo movement, the state legislature took substantive steps to address sexual harassment in the workplace.

The “severe or pervasive” standard that had created an often-impossible bar to clear was finally eliminated.

Legislators also passed a bill which will ensure a certain percentage of subcontractors on state contracts must be minority or woman-owned businesses.

Women’s health issues were the subject of some of the first bills that the Senate

and Assembly coordinated on early in the year. The Reproductive Health Act removed punishments for abortions from New York’s penal code and codified into law that abortion will remain a legal right in New York, regardless of any Supreme Court decision at the federal level. The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act now requires health insurance companies to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive options.

In the age of the #MeToo movement, the state legislature took substantive steps to address sexual harassment in the workplace.

The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act prohibited discrimination based on gender identity or expression and added transgender people to

the Conservative Party. You can find many pictures of the event on the New York State Conservative Party Facebook Page. A video will be going up shortly. *** I worked in the New York State Legislature for 40 years. One of the first things they tell freshman legislators is to read the bills.

Often there is language buried in the bills that expands on or even changes what you believe a bill was intended to do.

Fortunately Brooklyn/ Staten Island Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis and Orange County Assemblymember Colin Schmitt do read the bills. The two caught a serious error (giving the Democrats the benefit of the doubt) in a piece of legislation that would have resulted in those illegal aliens who just a week ago were given the right to

obtain driver’s licenses being automatically enrolled to vote.

The bill had already passed the State Senate, thus I would encourage Sen. Andrew Gounardes who voted for it to pay closer attention in the future.

In the end, as a result of Malliotakis and Schmitt sounding the alarm, the Assembly withdrew the bill from consideration. The next morning, the governor spoke with disdain about what had almost occurred in the legislature, agreeing that indeed the bill would have enrolled illegal aliens as voters.

For those that are interested, the automatic voter registration bill A8280A says, “If you are not a citizen of the United States, do not check the voter registration box below [the opt-out box].”

those protected under New York’s hate crimes law. In a separate bill, lawmakers banned conversion therapy for minors.

With the enactment of the Child Victims Act, child victims of sexual abuse can now seek prosecution against their abuser until the age of 55 in civil cases and until the age of 28 for criminal cases; the previous age limit for both had been 23.

School zone speed cameras have been proven to be effective, lowering speeding by 60 percent in areas where they operate. The major expansion of the program, which will go into effect on July 11, will not only increase the total number of speed

cameras to 750, but instead of only ticketing speeding drivers during school hours on school days, they will be issuing summonses from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays year-round.

A gun control bill package banned bump-stocks, extended the background check period for purchases and instituted a “red flag” law to keep guns from those who pose a danger to themselves or others.

While 9/11 first responders have had to plead again with Republicans in Washington to reauthorize funding for their ongoing healthcare, the state legislature passed bills to reduce delays in benefits processing by increasing the number of NYCERS physicians and to guarantee all city employees

with 9/11-related illnesses access to time off.

The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act is the most ambitious state climate bill in the nation and its passage will lead to investment in renewable energy infrastructure and an 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Elections matter, and the prolific 2019 legislative session by this Senate and Assembly should be a reminder to every voter just how much they matter. Remember that, not just when you vote next November, but when you conveniently vote on a weekend before Election Day, because they also enacted comprehensive election reforms, including early voting.

3rd Ave. leaders prepare for Summer Stroll on 3rd, and popular BID Initiative When the Merchants of Third Avenue got together last week at the Greenhouse Cafe, they discussed many matters that will impact the Greater Bay Ridge community, including the upcoming Summer Stroll on 3rd and the much-antitipcated launching of the Third Avenue Business Improvement District.

Merchants President Bob Howe noted that the initiative “will be a big plus for Third Avenue and all of Bay Ridge.” He described it as a Business “Investment” District.

Home Reporter executive Marc Hibsher pointed out that the Fifth Avenue Business District “has been a great development for

merchants, residents and property owners there; in fact, we just learned that the city, which favors BIDs, awarded a special $100,000 marketing grant to them.”

One of the bonuses a BID will bring, according to a spokesperson, is “an ultramodern, interactive website” that will be accessible to each and every person along Third Avenue. On this topic, Hibsher offered the following: “With such a web operation, merchants wouild be able to post daily specials or overarching themes reaching at least 1,000 targets immediately and many more in the course of a day.”

The Kiwanians provide the venue, the DJ, a photo booth and more. Every year, Spinelli told us, Romantique Limousine has provided, at no cost, a super stretch SUV limo for many participants to take part in photo opportunities.

Spinelli credits sponsors Empire State Bank, Northfield Bank, Ridge Abstract Corp. and many colleagues within the BRLA for their aid in defraying the substantial expense the event entails and he is especially grateful that, since its inception, the prom has been held at Sirico’s Catering Hall through the generosity of the owners.

Like a hot dog without a bun: Feltman’s loses Coney Island home

The bun slicer turned rival

The origin stories of Feltman’s and Nathan’s have been written about frequently and exhaustively since the Michael and Joe Quinn launched Feltman’s 21st-century iteration.

Charles Feltman was a German immigrant with a Coney Island pie wagon. He wrapped sausages in rolls and called them red hots back in 1867.

Feltman’s business boomed, and in due time it became a sprawling entertainment complex. Feltman’s Ocean Pavilion, part of that complex, claimed to be the world’s largest restaurant.

Feltman died in 1910 — six years before his rivalto-be emerged. Nathan Handwerker worked as a bun slicer (apparently, that was a job title a century ago) for Feltman’s sons before starting rival hot dog business — Nathan’s Famous — in 1916.

But, even as it competes with the giant of Nathan’s, the modern-day resurgence of Feltman’s has won positive reviews.

A 2016 Gothamist headline declared it “NYC’s Best Hot Dog.” Last year, it landed the No. 2 spot on Grub Street’s Absolute Best Hot Dog in New York list. (Nathan’s was Number 12.)

Nationwide, Feltman’s f ran k was the Daily Meal’s No. 6 pick for its 2018 list of America’s 75 Best Hot Dogs. (Nathan’s was Number 44.)

Box 658, Brooklyn, NY 11232 Facility: Gowanus Generating Station 420 2nd Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11232, Kings County Project Information: Article 10 of the Public Service Law (“Article 10”) provides the regulatory process for siting some power plants in New York State. Astoria Generating Company, L.P. (“AGC”) is seeking a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (the “Certificate”) from the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (the “Siting Board”) pursuant to Article 10 and Siting Board Rules and Regulations under 16 NYCRR Part 1000. AGC operates two existing electric generating stations on barges in the East River along the shore of the Gowanus/Sunset Park neighborhoods, Community District 7, Borough of Brooklyn, Kings County, City of New York, the Gowanus Generating Station (“Gowanus”) and Narrows Generating Station (“Narrows”). AGC is proposing to repower the older, less efficient generating units at Gowanus replacing them with new, more efficient generating units and then retire the Narrows generating units (the “Gowanus Repowering Project” or the “Project”). The Project entails replacement of the current 32 older generating units on four barges with eight larger more efficient, natural gas-powered units situated equally on two barges. The current megawatt (“MW”) rating of Gowanus is 640 MW. The Project will result in a MW rating no greater than 590 MW, 50 MW less than the current facility. The current MW rating of Narrows is 320 MW. Upon commencing operation at the repowered Gowanus facility, AGC will retire Narrows decreasing traditional generation in the Sunset Park neighborhood by a total of 370 MW. The Gowanus Repowering Project will result in cleaner, more efficient electric generation providing electric reliability required for the area and, since the units will continue to be situated on barges, the Project will maintain critical infrastructure resilience during storm events. As the City and State move toward greater reliance on renewable energy sources, should the Gowanus units no longer be needed for reliability, the barges may be easily removed without abandoning infrastructure in the community. On May 14, 2019, AGC filed a Preliminary Scoping Statement (“PSS”) with the Siting Board under Article 10. The PSS summarizes the proposed scope of studies for the Project and is designed to gather input from the public and interested agencies ensuring proper preparation of the Project Article 10 (“Application”), to be filed at a later date.
