Made in NYCampus designs revealed, slated to open in spring 2021

It’s finally taking shape.

On Thursday Nov. 21, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NY-

CEDC) released the designs for the garment manufacturing hub and public realm components of the new Made in NY Campus at Bush Terminal in Sunset Park.

According to NYCEDC, the campus, which is slated to open its doors in spring 2021, will pro-

vide affordable industrial facilities for garment manufacturing, film and media production, and related services and industries.

NYCEDC Senior Vice President and Department Head of Design and Construction Jhaelen Hernandez-Eli talked to

this paper about what this campus will bring to Sunset Park and how it will separate itself from similar spaces across the city.

“It is rare to combine public space and a public realm with industrial space,” he explained.

“This is one of the first industri-

al campuses in the United States.

To be able to reappropriate that kind of waterfront industrial space for more industrial space where people are making things is a unique opportunity. It doesn’t happen very often. Then, to be able to couple it with the pub-

Riders who wait for the B1 bus on 86th Street have to stand far out into the street due to the presence of stanchions of the elevated D train which render it impossible for bus drivers to pull up to the curb at most bus stops.

But thanks to an influx of federal dollars, that is about to change.

U.S. Rep. Max Rose came to Bensonhurst on Nov. 24 to announce that he and fellow members of the House Brooklyn delegation have secured $9 million in funds to improve bus safety and accessibility in the southern end of the borough.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Brooklynites have enthusiastically welcomed director Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated film “The Irishman” — which was finally released on Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 27 — in part because the film has numerous Brooklyn ties, including scenes filmed in New Corner restaurant in Dyker Heights back in late 2017.

The owners of New Corner, the Colandrea family, loved the film, and enjoyed seeing their restaurant in it, according to Joe Colandrea, director of marketing for the eatery and son of owner Vincent Colandrea.

“We were absolutely honored to have been selected to film a few scenes for the movie at Colandrea New Corner

Restaurant,” Colandrea told this paper. “As an establishment that has been serving Brooklyn since 1936, this truly meant a lot to our family, our loyal patrons and friends. It was surreal to be a small part in such a high-profile movie, and to meet the celebrities in person.”

Though the film, which is based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt and follows the life of Frank Sheeran (Robert DeNiro) and Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and tells the story of the assassination of labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa, takes place in several cities, New York plays a pivotal role.

Dyker power outage outrages residents

What a turkey!

A power outage left thousands of Dyker Heights residents without electricity at the tail end of the long Thanksgiving weekend, according to local officials, who said the power was off for about three hours on Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 3,600 Con Edison customers living in an area located between 11th Avenue and 13th Avenue from 67th Street to 85th Street lost electricity. Con Ed immedi-

ately dispatched repair crews to the neighborhood to address the situation, officials said.

It’s not clear what caused the Dec. 1 power outage. “I heard it was caused by a transformer going out,” Dyker Heights Civic Association President Fran Vella-Marrone told the Home Reporter. “But I really don’t know what happened.”

Vella-Marrone was among the 3,600 customers who lost power. She periodically checked on an elderly neighbor.

Christmas lights display, the holiday-time treat featuring scores of homes decorated with thousands of twinkling lights and giant Santa Claus figures, reindeer and angels, was not affected by the power outage, said Josephine Beckmann, district manager of Community Board 10.

“By 5 p.m., the electricity was back,” Beckmann told the Home Reporter.

A new hot spot for seniors — Bay Ridge Connects hosts ribbon-cutting ceremony

The Bay Ridge Center located in the basement of Bethlehem Lutheran Church has been the place to go for Bay Ridge seniors to spend time with friends. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, the center hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its brand-new annex, Bay Ridge Connects at 79th Street and Third Avenue.

The new storefront community center is geared towards adults 60 and over who are looking for a place to socialize in a modern, friendly space that’s tech-ready with computers and workspace available for anyone wishing to stop in.

Bay Ridge Center Executive Director Marianne Nicolosi said that the goal of

the new center was to be “an inclusive and welcoming space that engages populations currently underrepresented at the Bay Ridge Center, including the younger older adults of the Baby Boomers generation.”

Nicolosi introduced the board members who will staff Bay Ridge Connects on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“Our goal is to make this a state-of-the-art technology learning center. We want to provide a village-to-village platform for folks to be able to connect with one another, not just in person but online as well,” said Nicolosi. “Our goal is to bridge the digital divide for older adults,” she added.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

During its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20, the 68th Precinct honored Police Officers Christian Aleman and Taha Jahmi as Cops of the Month for arresting an armed man allegedly involved in a fight with his girlfriend near a hair salon in Bay Ridge.

“On Tuesday, Oct. 15 at approximately 4 p.m., officers assigned the Third Platoon responded to a dispute with a firearm at 9013 Fifth Ave. in

front of the Fifth Avenue Hair Studio,” Capt. Robert Conwell, the precinct’s commanding officer, told the group gathered in the station house, 333 65th St. Conwell said the victim told the two officers “that her exboyfriend verbally threatened her and showed her a black firearm.”

The victim, Conwell went on, “also told the officers that the defendant was continuously driving around the area and she feared for her life.” In response, said Conwell, the two cops sent out a radio alert with a description of the sus-

pect’s car, then began a canvass of the area in search of the car accompanied by the victim.

Eventually, said Conwell, the pair located the suspect, who was positively identified by the victim.

“Officers conducted a stop, placed the defendant in handcuffs,” and then conducted a search of the car, in which they “found a loaded nine millimeter black Smith and Wesson firearm [in the trunk] as well as a large quantity of controlled substances,” Conwell said, adding, “Thank you, guys, for removing a firearm off the streets.”

Two local civic groups — the Rotary Club of Verrazano and the Salaam Club of New York — joined forces to say thank-you to the service members at Fort Hamilton Army Base in Bay Ridge by distributing 80 turkeys at the base on Friday, Nov. 20.

Trevor Loew, director of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation at Fort Hamilton, made sure all the turkeys were reserved for service members who signed up, with extras allotted for any last minute walk-ins.

“Our goal is to take care of the military families on Fort Hamilton and we’re lucky to have community partners such as the Verrazano Rotary and the Salaam Club of New York that support not only the military families but the Fort Hamilton community in general,” Loew told this paper.

From Bay Ridge to Hollywood...

Ralph Perfetto finds second career as actor

If you watch the hit movie “The Irishman,” starring Hollywood heavyweights Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, you’ll see Ralph Perfetto playing a Catholic monsignor presiding over Ray Romano’s wedding. When Steven Spielberg’s muchanticipated version of “West Side Story” hits the big screen in 2020, you’ll see Perfetto playing an old ItalianAmerican man.

And if you watch any one of dozens of television shows, from “Law and Order SVU” to “Madame Secretary,” you can catch a glimpse of Perfetto.

Perfetto, 85, a longtime Bay Ridge resident who is better known as a local Democratic Party leader, has

found a rewarding second career as an actor.

“I’m having a great time and I’m making good money,” he told the Home Reporter.

Perfetto, who came to show business late in life, is the Democratic district leader of the 64th Assembly District covering parts of Bay Ridge and Staten Island and has spent decades working on political campaigns and advising elected officials on policy.

He also had years of experience working in city government, including a lengthy stint serving in the Public Advocate’s Office under Betsy Gotbaum and Mark Green.

While he still loves politics, Perfetto admitted that his blossoming acting career is taking up more and more of his time these days.

And who could blame him?

It’s not every day a person gets to rub elbows with famous directors like Martin Scorsese, who was at the helm of “The Irishman.”

“It was a thrill to be on that set. You knew it was going to be a special film,” he said. He enjoyed a nice chat with Pesci between takes and was thrilled when Scorsese came up to him at the end of the day’s shoot, shook his hand and thanked him.

Perfetto also loved working on “West Side Story,” especially the day Spike Lee came to the set to visit his friend Spielberg.

One of his fondest memories was teaching two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine how to play bocce on the set of “Going in Style.”

Caine was required to play bocce in a scene but was unfamiliar with the game. Perfetto came to his rescue by giving him some pointers. “Michael Caine, a man I admire so much as an actor, came up to me afterwards and thanked me for making him look good!”

Perfetto said.

Perfetto caught the acting bug early on, when he was a child. “When I was young, I had a nervous stutter and I was introverted. It’s hard for anyone who knows me now to believe it, but I was introverted,” he said with a laugh.

He went to a speech therapist for help. A theater workshop was located across the hall. “I went there for $10 a week,” he said.

At one point, the director of the theater workshop, Burt Lane, the father of actress Diane Lane, made him get up onstage and pointed him out to the other acting students as an example of a brave person unafraid to take chances. Lane encouraged the other acting students to be more like Perfetto.

The moment left an impression on Perfetto.

But he dropped acting. “I went on with my life,” he said. He raised a family and worked in politics and government.

In 2008, he was getting set to retire from the Public Advocate’s Office when an insurance fraud case came into the office. Perfetto helped the victim recover $5,000 owed to him. The victim told Ralph he had a strong persona and could be an actor.

“Three months later, I retired. He called me again to help him on a second case,” said Perfetto, who was working as a private investigator at the time.

He helped the client a second time. The man’s name was Clem Caserta, an actor who has appeared in many films, including “A Bronx Tale” and “The Untouchables.”

Caserta introduced Perfetto to an agent who got him roles as a non-union actor. “I started out non-union and worked my way up to become a SAG actor,” he said, referring to the Screen Actors Guild.

Since the start of his career in 2008, Perfetto has had small roles in 37 movies and appeared in 53 episodes of television series, including appearing seven times on “Law and Order SVU.” He played a juror on “The Good Wife.” He has worked on “Madam Secretary” and “Billions.”

He has acted numerous times in historical re-enactments on the Discovery Channel.

“I’ve done commercials.

I’ve played Mafia dons,” he said.

Perfetto’s love for acting is contagious. He acted in one commercial where the director needed a woman to play his wife. Perfetto recruited his neighbor, Gerri Sullivan.

CENTRAL BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn rapper who is known for his silver tinsel wig has launched a primary campaign against longtime incumbent U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez, according to Patch. Paperboy Prince is best known for his “Yang Gang” videos in support of presidential candidate Andrew Yang. “I have the power to get people interested and excited. That’s literally what I do for a living. I’m speaking the people’s language,” Prince told Patch. Asked about his unconventional attire, he answered, “I don’t want to look like these politicians. Art and youthfulness and creativity and fashion are at the center of the district.”

LAWSUIT CHARGES SEXUAL HARASSMENT AT SCHOOL

SOUTHERN BROOKLYN — For nearly four decades, a swath of southern Brooklyn has been waiting for a new Sanitation garage — and there is no end to that wait in sight. Members of Community Board 13, which spans Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst, Gravesend and Seagate, voted in September to put the garage back on its list of priorities. THOUSANDS WITHOUT POWER ON SUNDAY

DYKER HEIGHTS — Thousands of Brooklyn residents, most of them in Dyker Heights and Sunset Park, were without power on Sunday.

Con Edison said it was still trying to determine whether the outages were weather-related. A spokesperson for the utility said that more than 3,600 of the outages were located between 10th and 13th avenues. The rest were scattered throughout the borough. Service was restored around 5 p.m.

BIG MACS VS. ‘LUCRATIVE, HIGH-DENSITY’ HOUSING

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — The owner of a building containing a McDonald’s on Atlantic Avenue in Prospect Heights, just down the street from Barclays Center, is trying to hike the fast-food outlet’s rent 545 percent, from about $14,000 a month to nearly $90,000, according to the New York Post. Representatives for the owner, Vanderbilt Atlantic Holdings HHC, say they would like to build “lucrative, high-density” housing on the street. The McDonald’s chain, in return, is suing Vanderbilt in Brooklyn Federal Court for “attempting to corrupt a contractually required fair-market rental-valuation process.”

Vanderbilt spokesperson Tom Li told the Post, “I think there’s two sides to the story.”

BPL BRANCHES TO BEGIN LENDING BOARD GAMES

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — The Brooklyn Public Library will begin lending board games at branches in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights next spring, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Librarians aren’t revealing which games will be loaned out through the program, but the library system has conducted an extensive survey of library users’ preferences. Funding for the project will be provided by Bklyn Incubator, a Brooklyn Public Library program that funds creative programming ideas, the Brooklyn Paper said.

COLTON ANNOUNCES TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE

GRAVESEND — Assemblymember William Colton (D-GravesendBensonhurst-Bath Beach) has announced his annual Toys for Tots Drive on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps. “The U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program is a perfect example that our servicemen and women are doing more than just serving our country. Any contributions are appreciated and will help millions of less fortunate children to enjoy the magic of the holidays,” said Colton. Toys should be new and in their original packages. Anyone who would like to donate toys is welcome to drop them off any time before Dec. 16 at Colton’s district office, 155 Kings Highway in Gravesend.

WOMAN SCARES OFF WOULD-BE RAPIST

BENSONHURST — A brave woman walking to a Bensonhurst subway station fended off a suspect who tried to rape her behind several parked cars. The 48-year-old woman was walking to the 20th Avenue station near 64th Street around 5 a.m. on Thursday when a man grabbed her by the throat and dragged her behind two

parked cars. He tried to rape her but ran away when she screamed for help, police said. Surveillance video shows a white or Hispanic man in his late teens or 20s with a dark-colored T-shirt bearing a logo and dark-colored pants.

PARK, COLLEGE HAVE NEW DEFENSE AGAINST ALGAE

PROSPECT PARK — Toxic, blue-green algae have plagued Prospect Park Lake for years, and whenever dogs come into contact with it, they get sick, according to Gothamist. The shallowness of the lake and a buildup of phosphate in the water both contribute to the algae bloom. The Prospect Park Alliance has teamed up with Brooklyn College for a new nature-based solution called ecoWEIR, Gothamist said. This technology filters incoming water underground and uses plants grown on top to absorb excess nutrients. Professor Jennifer Cherrier of Brooklyn College said, “If you don’t stop the pollutants from going into the water in the first place, it’s just going to be never-ending.”

MIDEAST RESTAURANT FOCUSES ON FOODS OF SYRIA, JORDAN

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — The mother of a Brooklyn charter school student said another student sexually harassed and groped her daughter during a test and the school did nothing about it, according to the Daily News. In a lawsuit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court, Clerice Brown said her daughter was molested and harassed by a fellow student at Uncommon Charter High School last year. Brown said her daughter, identified as A.B. in the lawsuit, was at school to take a make-up Spanish test. A proctor noticed a boy staring at her during a group portion of the test, but staff still decided to put the two in a room together without any supervision, Brown alleged. Among the other student’s remarks were, “Hey, you a virgin? Look under the desk, I’ve got something to show you.” Eventually, he crawled under the table and grabbed her buttocks and leg. The school refused to transfer the boy to another school, the lawsuit charged.

MAN TALKS WOULD-BE JUMPER DOWN FROM BRIDGE

BROOKLYN BRIDGE — A stranger helped a man who was standing at the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday, CBSNewYork reported. Plumber John Hansen and a friend were driving over the bridge when they saw someone standing on the ledge. Hansen began yelling, “Walk back! It’s not worth your life!” When Hansen said, “Turn around, it’s not worth it,” the man turned and looked at him. The man was taken into police custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.

MANHOLE FIRES PLAGUE CROWN HEIGHTS RESIDENTS

WILLIAMSBURG — Sakib, a new restaurant on Bedford Avenue near the Williamsburg Bridge, has its roots in Syria and Jordan, according to New York Eater. It offers “Arabic pies something like individual pizzas, topped with ground meat, spinach, cheese or the spice-andsesame seed mixture called zattar” as well as bourekas, kebabs and falafel. The store also specializes in labneh, a Middle Eastern yogurt with a creamy and thick texture. Sakib is located at 349 Bedford Ave.

CROWN HEIGHTS — Residents of Dean Street and nearby thoroughfares in Crown Heights were awakened early Tuesday by popping and cracking sounds coming from multiple manhole fires, according to 4NewYork. No injuries were reported, but some 245 Con Edison customers were without power temporarily, the utility reported.

One of the manhole fires was reported to be directly underneath a parked car. Con Edison crews restored power by 9 a.m., 4NewYork said.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — The New York Times recently focused on Erin Lorek, a Bedford-Stuyvesant artist who works out of her living room rather than a commercial studio or loft. “It’s a constant negotiation of moving stuff around and finding space to do this,” Lorek, who works in metal, told the Times. In the past, artists were able to find affordable studio spaces in industrial buildings in Williamsburg, Bushwick, Sunset Park, Gowanus and other neighborhoods. However, faced with rising commercial rents, more and more artists are working out of living rooms, bedrooms or rented studios that they time-share with other artists. Moreover, the fact that artists are working from home means that they don’t have the sense of community that they used to have in loft and warehouse buildings.

HUGE PUDDLE PLAGUES CROWN HEIGHTS RESIDENTS

CROWN HEIGHTS — Homeowners on Midwood Street in Crown Heights have been forced to live with a large, stagnant puddle on their block for more than a decade, according to the Brooklyn Paper.

“In the summer, it’s a swimming pool. In the winter it’s a skating rink,” Bernadette Lewis, whose mother owns a house on the street between Utica and Schenectady avenues, told the Brooklyn

FLATBUSH — Police are searching for a man wanted in a violent purse snatching in Flatbush on Friday, Nov. 8, and have released surveillance video showing a suspect running and clutching the bag, ABC7 reported. The victim, a middle-aged woman, was riding in a dollar van, according to ABC7, when her pocketbook was taken.

CITYWIDE — A dispute over shipping homeless New Yorkers to Newark, N.J. landed in federal court on Monday after Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s administration filed a lawsuit against Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City of New York. For months, according to Politico, Baraka has expressed increasing frustration with de Blasio allegedly unloading his homeless problem onto surrounding municipalities.

Newark claims New York has sent almost 1,200 people across the Hudson River into New Jersey, often subjecting them to dangerous conditions, Politico said.

Let there be light! Sunset Park hosts another festive tree-lighting ceremony

A Sunset Park Christmas tradition continues, as the Sunset Park Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) held its annual holiday tree-lighting ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving.

As always, local families showed up on Friday, Nov. 30 outside Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 545 60th St., for goodies, entertainment, photos with an elf and, of course, the dramatic illumination of the towering tree.

“The front of OLPH is the closest thing that strip of Sunset Park’s Fifth Avenue has

to a public square other than the park itself so it’s really important to have that place to begin with,” noted Executive Director of the BID David Estrada, noting that the church partners with the BID to host the “shared event.

“Father [James] Gilmour said some beautiful words about the season of lights and appreciating having these lights during the darkest times of the year,” he added.

The entertainment included clown Payaso Pechuguin and band Hasta la Zeta, and the BID’s famous antique trolleys that were on the avenue the next day, throughout Small Business Saturday, and the BID gave away about 150 gift

“There used to be a Santa that sat outside but it’s just so cold for the little kids so now we have the antique trolley that runs in the afternoon for shopping and pauses in front of OLPH and becomes home base,” Estrada said.

The well-attended event means a lot for both Sunset Park and the BID, he added.

“I’m just happy to carry on a Sunset Park tradition like the lighting of the holiday lights on the avenue, followed by the tree lighting on Black Friday, which is trying to get people shopping small on Fifth Avenue. It all seems to line up beautifully,” he said.

He also thanked event producer Cathy Williams who was on the trolley all afternoon, handing out bags.

The trolleys will run again along Fifth Avenue on Saturday, Dec. 14, Sunday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 21.

BROWN, Dorothy M. — Resident of Framingham, Massachusetts and nearly lifelong resident of Brooklyn, died on Nov. 26 at the age of 112 years. Dorothy was born on May 1, 1907 in Brooklyn to Nellie (Sullivan) and Michael Corcoran. That year, Theodore Roosevelt was president, a movie cost a nickel and the Plaza Hotel opened its doors at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. The life expectancy of an American woman was just 49.9 years (which Dorothy outlived by 62.7 years). Dorothy was born at home on Tilden Avenue and was baptized at the Church of the Holy Cross, Brooklyn.

Her parents were born in New York City in 1871 and 1859 and all four of her grandparents and one great-grandmother were born in Ireland and immigrated to New York City. Dorothy had five brothers and three sisters.

Dorothy’s father was a printer who worked in New York City and then Philadelphia during tough economic times. When he returned home to Brooklyn each weekend, he brought magazines and chocolate from Lofts’ Candy Store for Dorothy.

That was the start of Dorothy’s life-long obsession with chocolate including Blackout Cake purchased at Ebinger’s on Bedford Avenue in Flatbush.

She had a long walk through Prospect Park from her home in Flatbush to the Manual Training High School on Seventh Avenue. After high school, Dorothy worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance for two years as a clerk. Dorothy met New Yorker Daniel Francis Brown at a house party in Brooklyn.

He proposed and took a job as a police officer with the Miami Police Department. At the age of 19, with two nice dresses her sisters gave her, Dorothy sailed on the steamship Seminole to Miami. The local Catholic priest checked on Dorothy at

the motel where she was staying and Dan’s brother officers collected 3,600 pennies for his and Dorothy’s honeymoon. The two were married on June 16, 1926 at the Church of the Holy Name, Miami, Florida. They returned to Brooklyn where Dan became a member of the New York Police Department assigned to the 103rd Precinct.

Dorothy lived through Dan’s long overtime hours brought on by the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and Two-Gun Crowley’s crime spree. After her children were grown, Dorothy started a career in retail sales working for Rogers Peet in Manhattan until retiring in 1974. She then worked for Dunhill’s at Rockefeller Center where her clients included Tony Randall, Walter Cronkite, Jack Lemmo, and Carol Channing. Upon retiring from Dunhill’s in her 70s, Dorothy became the head of travel for the Senior Club at St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church in Bensonhurst, a position she held until the age of 91.

Not wanting to sit around and do nothing, Dorothy shaved 10 years off her age and joined the Jeanette & Morris Kessel Volunteer Services Department at Beth Israel Hospital. She was a patient liaison and knit blankets for preemies. She also delivered yarn and picked up completed preemie blankets from friends who were elderly shut-ins. She remained in her own apartment on East Fifth Street until the age of 101 when she moved into assisted living at the Norwegian Christian Home and Health Center in Dyker Heights. In February 2019, at the age of 111, NCHHC suggested that it was time to think about a nursing home. Dorothy moved to a nursing home in Framingham where her family was able to be with her every day. Dorothy leaves two daughters, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Her husband, son, two son-in-laws and one grandson predeceased

her. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 429 Great Rd, Stow, Massachusetts on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Interment was at Old Calvary Cemetery, Queens.

The long-awaited 74,000-square-foot Wegmans grocery store in the Brooklyn Navy Yard has been open for about a month, gladdening the hearts of devoted shoppers who refer to themselves as Wegmaniacs.

I’ve got a suggestion for all of you who are schlepping a long way to Wegmans. Why not turn your shopping trip into an urban adventure?

There’s so much cool stuff to see in the area — including historic architecture, driverless cars and places to day-drink. Wegmans stays open until 11 p.m., so you have lots of time to do other things before you hit the produce department.

VINEGAR HILL Go and see Vinegar Hill, a quiet, picturesque waterfront neighborhood that combines 200-year-old rowhouses with a Con Ed substation that extends for blocks and blocks along the shoreline of the East River. The neighborhood is right up the hill from Wegmans’ Sands Street entrance.

The area was named after the Battle of Vinegar Hill, which took place during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Irish immigrant shipbuilder John Jackson owned a lot of the land on which the neighborhood was built. He chose the name to honor his homeland.

At the top of the neighborhood’s highest hill, behind a fence and gate, there’s a landmarked mansion built in 1805 and 1806 for the Commandant of the Brooklyn Navy. It has been privately owned since 1979. It is called the Commandant’s House. The address is 24 Evans St., if you’re looking for it on a cellphone map.

Charles Bulfinch designed the house, the city Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about it says. Of course his name rings a bell. He designed part of the U.S. Capitol.

The Vinegar Hill Historic District consists of several blocks in various parts of the neighborhood. It includes Greek Revival-style rowhouses located at 67, 69 and 71 Hudson Ave., which were constructed in 1817.

THE NAVAL CEMETERY LANDSCAPE At the edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, there’s an extraordinary 1.5-acre park with a winding boardwalk built a few feet above a former burial ground. It is open to the public.

This somber and peaceful place is called the Naval Cemetery Landscape. It is part of the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.

When you’re walking around the area surrounding Wegmans, this is NOT the next thing you will see after finishing a Vinegar Hill stroll.

But I’m mentioning the Naval Cemetery Landscape now because I suggest you see it early in the day while there’s plenty of sunlight. It takes a good long while to walk there.

You have to head down Flushing Avenue and go all the way to Williamsburg Street West, then turn left.

People who died at a hospital in the Navy Yard were buried in this hallowed ground. But in the 1920s, this cemetery was decommissioned.

Many of the dearly departed’s remains were taken to Cypress Hills Cemetery where baseball great Jackie Robinson is buried.

However, other bodies were possibly left behind in the Naval Cemetery, archival and archaeological investigators realized in the 1990s.

The raised boardwalk is a sign of respect for the unmarked graves that are probably on the site.

— Continued from page 16INB — There are also two lines of gigantic stones that form pathways in the park.

The terrain is planted with native meadow grasses, wildflowers and photogenic milkweed plants.

In one corner of the park, semi-circular rows of benches form an amphitheater.

In another corner, there’s an area called the Sacred Grove with a wooden bench for quiet contemplation. A compartment on the bottom of the bench holds a notebook in which visitors are invited to write their thoughts.

If you turn your head while sitting on this bench, you can catch a glimpse through the trees of the former Navy Yard hospital. It was built in 1838 and is made of Tuckahoe marble.

Several years ago, developer Doug Steiner of Steiner Studios showed me around the Naval Annex, which is the area where the hospital is located. He’s restoring the buildings in the 20-acre complex and turning it into a location for film and TV production.

THE NAVY YARD The Brooklyn Navy Yard where Wegmans is located is an immensely historic place. President John Adams established it in 1801, when the American Republic was young.

Famous ships that were built at the 300-acre site include the USS Arizona, which the Japanese sank in their Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Women worked at the Navy Yard during World War II — Jennifer Egan’s novel “Manhattan Beach” delved into that historic phenomenon.

In this day and age, the Navy Yard belongs to the city. It’s now an industrial park full of businesses that make innovative products such as bomb-proof underwear (Crye Precision) and tools that are used on the Mars Rovers (Honeybee Robotics).

Most of the Brooklyn Navy Yard is closed to the public. But there are guided tours that share some of its most interesting secrets.

One provides an overview of the Navy Yard’s past and present, another offers an inside look at the businesses located there now.

One tour focuses on the Navy Yard’s architecture, another’s about the Navy Yard’s role in World War II and another’s about urban ecology. Sign up for them on the Navy Yard’s website.

A few years ago, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. President and CEO David Ehrenberg gave me a tour of the facility. It was great fun.

The handsome brick building with the flag in front of it is the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Building 92.

At the end of the vineyard where the hammocks are set up, you see Downtown Brooklyn’s new high-rise apartment towers standing in a row. Off to the left, you get a glimpse of the iconic Williamsburgh Savings Bank Clocktower Building.

THE SELF-DRIVING CAR Have you ridden in a self-driving car yet? You can try one out in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

When you’re done with your Russ & Daughters snack, walk out the back of Building 77 and head for the NYC Ferry landing.

A path for pedestrians and cyclists passes alongside Dock 72, a 16-story office building I recently toured (this was a reporters’ tour). It’s the first new-from-the-ground-up commercial building to be constructed at the Navy Yard in more than 10 years.

At the end of Dock 72 by the ferry landing, a spot is marked for the self-driving cars that a company called Optimus Ride is operating in the Navy Yard. The vehicles will shuttle you to the Navy Yard’s Cumberland Gate — or if you’re a timid passenger, you can take a very short ride that ends outside Building 77.

The car moves verrry slooowly, less than 20 miles per hour.

And a human being, who’s referred to as a safety operator, sits in the driver’s seat in case anything goes wrong. The Optimus Ride cars are New York’s first commercial self-driving vehicles.

ROOFTOP REDS There’s a vineyard in the Brooklyn Navy Yard called Rooftop Reds — on top of Building 275. And it’s open to the public.

It’s “the world’s first commercially viable urban rooftop vineyard,” its website says.

You have to make a reservation, which is free of charge, to get access to Rooftop Reds. Also, you have to go to the Navy Yard’s Sands Street entrance to be allowed into the complex.

It’s a unique experience to stroll down rows of grapevines with industrial buildings all around you and the top of the Empire State Building rising up from the horizon. This time of year, the vines are leafless and austerely beautiful, like wiry modern sculptures.

There are hammocks to hang out in, and picnic tables, if you want to stay outside and stare at the superb scenery while you sip your vino. There’s indoor seating as well.

Once you know that, you’ll be less surprised to discover that Brooklynites with a sense of history call the neighborhood bounded by Flushing, Carlton, Myrtle and Classon avenues Wallabout.

In this neighborhood, you find the city’s largest concentration of mid-19th century wooden houses. There’s a city-designated Wallabout Historic District on Vanderbilt Avenue. Greek Revival-style LeffertsLaidlaw House at 136 Clinton Ave. is an individual city landmark.

Preservation activists are campaigning for landmark designation for Wallabout’s most culturally significant house — 99 Ryerson St., where famed poet Walt Whitman lived when he published the first version of his ground-breaking volume “Leaves of Grass.”

To keep things simple, the advocates refer to the neighborhood where Leaves of Grass House is located as Clinton Hill.

A petition urging the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate 99 Ryerson St. has 7,000 signatures.

Whitman was the Eagle’s editor in the 1840s.

WEGMANS

RUSS & DAUGHTERS One spot in the Navy Yard that is open to the public is the ground floor of Building 77 at 141 Flushing Ave., where you can get a bite to eat.

The Lower East Side’s famous century-old bagels and lox purveyor, Russ & Daughters, opened a shop and food-production facility in Building 77 a couple years ago. It’s a good spot to sit for a bit and nosh on bagels and smoked Scottish salmon, or Irish salmon, or sable, or … the list goes on and it’s all good.

Building 77 was constructed in the 1940s as a storage facility. It didn’t have any windows. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. recently renovated it.

When you sit at the picnic tables, you get a view of Navy Yard buildings located on one side of Flushing Avenue and homes on the other, which are in a neighborhood called Wallabout that I’ll tell you about in a minute.

BUILDING 92

So. About Wegmans. The dazzling new supermarket has an entrance at 21 Flushing Ave. As I mentioned at the beginning of this story, there’s also an entrance on Sands Street.

My colleague Paul Frangipane and I toured the Wegmans right before it opened and created a list of reasons people are obsessed with this grocery chain.

Now that it’s fully stocked and full of shoppers, the Brooklyn Wegmans is even cooler than I thought it was on tour day.

When I shopped there the other day, I tried out the store’s Burger Bar. The hamburgers and French fries were great.

There was quite a crowd at the cheese counter, where a misting system keeps the goods moist without forming puddles.

There were beautiful orchids in the floral department and bounteous bread displays in the bakery.

Did I mention there’s a cocktail lounge on the mezzanine?

It was full.

There are historic exhibits at the Navy Yard’s Building 92 at 63 Flushing Ave. It consists of a glamorous brick home constructed as the Marine Commandant’s residence in 1858 with a modern addition in the back.

Also, in Building 92’s Yard Work Gallery, there’s an exhibit of works by artists whose studios are in the Navy Yard’s Building 30.

HEAD HI Off Flushing Avenue just steps away from the Brooklyn Navy Yard, there’s a shop whose address is 14 Clermont Ave. Head Hi, as it’s called, sells books, art, coffee and snacks.

The book selection is beautiful. It’s a good spot to stop and refuel with caffeine before you head off to the serious business of shopping at Wegmans.

WALLABOUT The body of water where the Brooklyn Navy Yard is situated is called Wallabout Bay.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Dec. 5, 1941

ON DEC. 5, 1925, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Key West, Fla. (AP) — The steamer Cotopaxi, out of Charleston, was reported as missing to Coast Guard headquarters here tonight.

Institution of a search for the vessel was asked. Patrol boats have been ordered to leave port here tomorrow to hunt for the steamer. SOS calls were reported to have been heard from the ship several days ago.” The Cotopaxi, with a crew of 32, was never found. In Steven Spielberg’s 1977 blockbuster “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the ship reappears in the Gobi Desert.  ON DEC. 5, 1933, the Eagle reported, “The Board of Transportation today reported to the Board of Estimate on the proposed construction of a tunnel under the Narrows between Bay Ridge and St. George, S.I., indicating strongly that it believed the tube should be large enough to accommodate a tunnel for passenger subway cars and a passage for freight cars. Outlining four possible plans of construction ranging in cost from $45,813,000 to $49,106,000, it visions a huge system capable of carrying 42,000,000 passengers within ten years of the beginning of operation. It is stated that the tube should take six years to construct.”  ON DEC. 5, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Washington (U.P.) — Japan told the United States today, in response to inquiries by President Roosevelt, that her troop concentrations in French Indo-China are in full accord with an agreement between Tokio and Vichy. The Japanese reply, given to Secretary of State [Cordell] Hull during a 25-minute interview with the two Japanese envoys, Kichisaburo Nomur and Saburo Kurusu, was understood to assert: 1. The agreement between Japan and Vichy provided for the stationing of Japanese garrisons in Indo-China. The number of troops now there is consistent with the agreement; 2. Foreign reports of the number of Japanese troops in Indo-China have been exaggerated; 3. The disposition of troops in Indo-China was calculated to offset what was described as a threatening concentration of Chinese troops in neighboring Yunnan Province and they are not in a position menacing to Thailand. The reply was reported to have avoided any reference to troops or naval movements by the ABCD powers which, Japan claims, in Tokio utterances are attempting to encircle Japan in the Far East. Hull took the Japanese reply to the White House to discuss it with Mr. Roosevelt at a luncheon conference and formulate policy on the next steps of this country.”  ON DEC. 5, 1952, the Eagle reported, “Enroute Home With Eisenhower (UP) — President-elect Eisenhower started home tonight after getting the ‘feel’ of the Korean war in a top-secret three-day tour which included conferences with top commanders and chow with fighting men in sight of the battle line.

‘Much can be done to improve our position,’ he said. ‘Much will be done.’ The former five-star general was convinced that American aid to South Korea should be increased, but he was equally convinced that the war should not be allowed to spread. And he added that he arrived at ‘no panaceas, no trick ways of settling any problems.’ … Eisenhower’s trip, from his departure from his New York headquarters right to the battle line, was conducted behind a curtain of secrecy. News of it was not released until after he had left Korea and his Military Air Transport Service Constellation was safely out of the reach of Communist fighters.”

OPINION ‘TIS THE SEASON I hope all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. My wife Janet and I were visiting family in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The weather was warm, the company great and the food good. What more could you want for Thanksgiving?

I did manage to get a few Christmas items on sale for Black Friday that in my case was on Tuesday. Even the Black Friday sales are being moved up. I suppose in this cyber world, where everyone — including me — finds themselves buying more and more things online, the retail community must take every opportunity to push its wares. For what it is worth, there are many items

that are best not purchased online and probably never will be. *** Having come clean on my current shopping habits, I will be shopping locally for all sorts of items, ranging from wine to books as well as candy and cookies. Our avenues are populated with small businesses owned and operated by individuals who reside locally or nearby. There are plenty of bargains for high-quality wares. More importantly, our small businesses depend on your patronage to remain viable. Do plan to do some of your holiday shopping locally.

uring the Thanksgiving break we all just had, some congressional staffers were busy at work, distilling the findings of the recently concluded impeachment inquiry into a report to provide to the House Judiciary Committee.

One of the fact witnesses who provided relevant testimony about the administration’s pressure campaign on the Ukraine was Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, whose widowed father had emigrated to Brighton Beach with his three young sons from Soviet Ukraine in 1979.

In exchange for complying with a subpoena and testifying to what he knows, Lt. Col. Vindman was slammed by President Trump, attacked by GOP lawmakers, and has faced so many threats, the Army is prepared to move his

family to living quarters on a military base.

Vindman made a promise to his father in his opening statement, saying that he made the right decision fleeing to the United States.

He explained that in Russia offering public testimony involving thepresident would surely cost him his life, adding, “I am grateful for my father's brave act of hope 40 years ago and for the privilege of being an American citizen and public servant, where I can live free of fear for mine and my family's safety.”

It is unacceptable that anyone, especially members of Congress or the president of the United States, would denounce a decorated, career public servant and Purple Heart recipient, simply because he complied with a constitutionally mandated order

and answered questions truthfully. Vindman swore an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, not a loyalty pledge to one particular man.

Marie Yovanov itch, whose parents fled the Soviet Union and then the Nazis, and Fiona Hill, who was born in northern England before becoming an American citizen years later, also provided important testimony.

These three immigrants, who have spent decades serving the administrations of both Republican and Democratic presidents as nonpartisan, nonpolitical professionals, focused on the national security of our country, exhibited their unbiased nature during their testimony.

They leveled not one personal attack. Their

assertions stuck to the facts of what they knew, corroborated by documents and/ or the testimony of others, and they were explicit when what they were relaying was an opinion. They also readily offered up instances where they agreed with the president or felt that a particular criticism of him was not warranted.

The manner in which they comported themselves demonstrates that they were simply doing their jobs, which required them to question actions that were not in the interests of U.S. national security, possibly illegal or unconstitutional, and then show up to testify truthfully before Congress when issued a lawful subpoena.

BY JAY BROWN tweeted a few days before Thanksgiving that, “After Mueller it should have been OVER.” The fact is, after Mueller, it was essentially over. Following the release of the Mueller report, more Democratic members of Congress came out in favor of beginning an impeachment inquiry, but there still weren’t nearly enough on board to begin any such process.

As a whole, Democrats in the House knew how difficult impeachment would be, both on the country, and to carry out to the point of removing an American president for the first time in our history. They did everything they could not to go down the road toward impeachment.

But the day after Robert Mueller’s public testimony before Congress, when the

consensus was that there would be no consequences for what had been detailed in the Mueller Report, President Trump got on the phone with Ukraine President Zelensky to talk about the congressionally approved military aid he had decided to put a hold on and said, “I would like you to do us a favor, though,” explaining that the money would be forthcoming if Ukraine announced investigations into the Bidens.

In his remarks to members of Congress, Lt. Col. Vindman also told his father, “Do not worry, I will be fine for telling the truth."

When asked by New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney why he had confidence he could tell his dad not to worry, he responded, “This is America. This is the country I’ve served and defended …and here, right matters.”

The New York Times: Loss of local businesses means loss of community

Anthony’s Butcher Shop is one of the ‘Mom and Pops’ keeping hope alive on Third As most of us know, every neighborhood in this big city features places to go and people to see right across the street or around the next corner when we exit our front doors. It could be a barbershop, a fruit market, a deli or any small business where the owners — generically regarded as “Mom and Pop” — know your name just the way folks did on the iconic television show “Cheers.”

Fortunately, for those of us who live in Bay Ridge, there are plenty of places to go where they know your name in addition to popular bistros like Cebu, Greenhouse Cafe, the Kettle Black, Brooklyn Firefly, Vesuvio’s and scores of others.

Many of these places are simply friendly markets providing often specialized but necessary goods, like Anthony’s Butcher Shop at 74th Street on Third Avenue. Bucking the devastating Amazon trend, for the past five years — thanks to his personality and skills as well as the support of daughters Michelle and Christina and wife Rosemary — Anthony’s has become a welcoming tradition. It’s the kind of place where you can also pick up a free copy of this newspaper in addition to top-quality meats and assorted goodies.

Adding vital support to Anthony’s and a score of other Cheers-like stores is a pro-active business-civic association, the Merchants of Third Avenue, led by President Bob Howe.

Howe is aided by a top-notch slate of officers and others who all pitch in, including Northfield Vice President Brian Chin, Green Spa’s Sheila Brody, insurance executive Dan Texeira, Charmed’s Jeanine Conden, Edward Jones Financial’s Patrick Gilbride, Empire

State Bank’s Phil Guarnieri, and Greenhouse Cafe’s Bob Daquara and John Keenan, just to name a few.

Anthony’s Butcher Shop and all mom-andpops are grateful when Festival Manager Chip Cafiero stages a festival or helps carry out the busy Summer Stroll on 3rd events, evoking a can-do atmosphere that brings thousands of additional shoppers and provides the much-needed foot traffic every store needs to survive.

But, as we are all painfully and powerlessly aware, mail-order behemoths like Amazon are strangling thousands of small businesses on a nationwide basis.

Being ‘better, cheaper and faster than Amazon’ doesn’t guarantee survival

Don’t take my word for it; take a look at a story that ran in a recent edition of The New York Times titled “Better, Cheaper and Faster Than Amazon.” It’s a prescient and scary piece dealing with the fate of one longstanding neighborhood hardware store on Ninth Avenue in Manhattan. Writer Tim Wu reports that Naum Feygin’s Chelsea Convenience Hardware will be closing by the time you read this column.

Wu’s story details the speed and accuracy with which Feygin has supplied his market over the years, demonstrating that his 600square foot emporium is indeed “better, cheaper and faster” than the service provided by faceless worker drones located in scores of plants across this continent.

A particular statement by Wu sums the situation up perfectly, alluding to how “an ideology of convenience is reshaping the economy. Ordering things like tape or bolts

Clicking on a product from the comfort of your couch seems more convenient — and that impression of ease can have more influence on our behavior than better service, quicker acquisition and lower prices.”

We’re willing to bet that there was no business-civic organization with a history of community involvement and promotion that for decades has typified the contribution of the Merchants of Third Avenue, led ably by Howe for almost 25 years..

There were no Summer Strolls along that west-side road to bring in thousands of diners and buyers on a hot July Friday night, no colorful Ragamuffin Parade to involve and excite kids and parents in the contiguous neighborhood, encouraging them to know and patronize their vital “mom and pop” shops.

And, did a Ninth Avenue Festival ever bring hundreds of thousands of Sunday visitors — many of them new to the neighborhood — out to enjoy a fall afternoon along a closed but bustling and charmingly bedecked thoroughfare?

Finally, at the risk of being self-serving, was Ninth Avenue able to benefit from informative and defining years of print and online newspapers that for more than eight decades have been telling the story of that neighborhood, nurturing its organizations and schools, while encouraging more new businesses and welcoming in new residents?

We hate to rub it in, but Third Avenue businesses like Anthony’s Butcher Shop have enjoyed all of the above; maybe that’s why this family store, like more and more others hereabouts, happily distributes copies of our favorite traditional newspapers: the Home Reporter & Sunset News and The Brooklyn Spectator.

Anthony appreciates vital help from local publications

How does Anthony Perricone — a true professional butcher who spent most of his working life cutting up for Frank & Eddy’s legendary shops — keep it going?

“I give my customers what they can’t get anywhere else — an honest cut of meat with a personal word or two from me or my staff — and I even offer them a copy of our hometown newspapers.

“Everyone in my family — my parents and uncles and aunts — told me about how important the Brooklyn Eagle was to them.

(One of them, he said, delivered the Eagle back then.)

“I have a really helpful guy from the Home Reporter, Marc Hibsher, who comes in, makes sure I get the papers each week and we are talking about a package that would include some good publicity and advertising stuff. He even talks with my dad (a true Brooklyn Eagle fan), who brings in the St. Athanasius bulletin for my customers.”

Having lived and worked along Third Avenue for some time, this writer can attest that there are still many stores out there like Anthony’s — places where local residents can indeed be called by their name.

In the end, the Third Avenue economy relies on foot traffic and getting the word out to the kind of customer who isn’t content to sit on her or his couch and click themselves into Amazonian debt and decline. And, to a great extent, this economy — like so many out there — needs actual human beings coming into the door.

Perricone doesn’t just supply cold cuts.

Seven days a week he and his family skillfully prepare their specialized meats, feature all kinds of classy baked goods and, at the same time, serve as a social center where the local press is there to tell about its singular neighborhood.
