McKinley students help DOT beautify bike lane barrier

When the New York City Department of Transportation decided to beautify an eightblock-long bike lane barrier on Seventh Avenue by painting a floral design on the structure, DOT found a group of volunteers who were eager to help.

Enthusiastic eighth graders from McKinley Intermediate School were among the dozens of volunteers painting a 1,700foot-long section of the Jersey barrier on Seventh Avenue on Oct. 23.

It took hours to get the job done. The work area started at 67th Street and extended all the

way to Bay Ridge Parkway.

The Jersey barrier, which runs along the Gowanus Ex-pressway Service Road, protects the designated bike lane from vehicular traffic flowing south on Seventh Avenue. The two-way bike lane is part of DOT’s Green Wave Plan, a plan to erect 30 miles of bike lanes a year in the city.

At one point, McKinley Principal Janice Geary and Assistant Principal Donna Nastasi decided to pay a visit to the work area near 67th Street to take a look at how their students were progressing. “It looks great!” Geary said.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

While Gov. Andrew Cuomo has appointed 19 members to a new commission that will oversee the creation of a statue honoring Mother Cabrini, U.S. Rep. Max Rose has his own idea of how to honor the patron saint of immigrants.

He recently introduced legislation to rename the Dyker Heights Post Office, 8202 13th Avenue, the Mother Cabrini Post Office.

For a so-called “off-year” election, this year’s ballot has plenty for voters to consider.

Here’s a guide to what you’ll find when you show up at your polling place to cast your ballot.

One high-profile race this election cycle is the contest for New York City Public Advocate.

Incumbent Jumaane Williams, a Democrat, is running for re-election. His two opponents are Staten Island Councilmember Joseph Borelli, who is running on both the Republican and Conservative party lines, and David Balkind, president of the non-profit Sahana Software Foundation. He is running on the Libertarian party line.

Voters in Brooklyn’s 45th Council District will go to the polls to select a City Council representative. Incumbent Democrat

Farah Louis, who won the seat earlier this year after Williams won the race for public advocate, is running for re-election. Her two opponents are Liberal Anthony Beckford and Libertarian David Fite. The district includes Flatbush, East Flatbush and parts of Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands and Kensington.

The election ballot contains five proposed changes to the New York City Charter.

Ballot Question # 1 would amend the charter to give voters the opportunity to rank candidates in numerical order (instead of voting for just one candidate) in primaries and special elections for mayor, City Council, public advocate, comptroller and borough president. NIA celebrates fifth annual Halloween Spooktacular!

An entire neighborhood got an early start on Halloween as NIA Community Services hosted its annual Halloween Spooktacular for kids of all ages.

Nearly 1,000 revelers attended the Fourth Annual Spooktacular on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The event, held from 2-6 p.m. on 11th Avenue between 66th and 67th Streets, celebrated everything attendees expect from the spooky holiday, including a costume contest, magic show, performances, candy and more.

The primary focus of NIA’s work revolves around expanded after-school partnerships that serve several thousand students daily, encouraging exploration and learning through the arts and sciences, developing new skills, providing opportunities for exercise, and fostering positive youth development and healthy lifestyle choices.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

One of Brooklyn’s most venerable organizations, the Dyker Heights Civic Association, held its annual testimonial dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Sirico’s Caterers, 8023 13th Avenue.

Longtime association President Fran Vella-Marrone hosted the evening honoring two deserving community leaders, Dr. Joseph Caruana and Dawn Musorofiti.

“I’m so pleased tonight to have the two honorees that we have,” she told the crowd.

“Dyker Heights Civic Association has been around for over 90 years and throughout those 90 years, we’ve always been about improving and maintaining the quality of life in this neighborhood and speaking out for this community. The two honorees we

Caruana has been a member of the New York State Academy of Family Physicians for 25 years and is a past president of the Medical Society of Bay Ridge. He was named one of the top doctors in New York City by New York magazine. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Verrazano since 1992 and remains on its board of directors. The weather was perfect for the parade and activities.

Lieutenant governor, New York Edge visit P.S. 264 in Bay Ridge

A packed room of enthusiastic kindergarten through fifth grade students at P.S. 264, the Bay Ridge Elementary School for the Arts, gathered to greet Lt. Gov.Kathy Hochul and members of New York Edge, the largest provider of afterschool programs in the city.

Hochul was there to salute the 20th annual Lights On Afterschool program, which allows schools to stay open after hours, and to celebrate the impact it’s had on children who’ve participated in the program. Hochul and District 20 schools Superintendent Karina

Costantino were given a tour of the school by Principal Marisa Bolognino.

Following the tour, they were joined by State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Rachael Gazdick, CEO of New York Edge. They all watched the students, who worked in groups of five or six on their afternoon project, building a free-standing lighthouse tower out of 30 straws and cellophane tape with a tiny light on top.

Fire in Bay Ridge kitchen injures five

A fire in the kitchen of a Bay Ridge building left five people injured, including four firefighters.

According to the FDNY, the fire occurred on Thursday, Oct. 25, at around 9:52 p.m. on the third floor of the building on Third Avenue between 82nd Street and 83rd Street.

Twelve units quickly rushed to the scene. The flames were put out at around 10:39 p.m. In addition to the firefighters, one civilian was injured.

Two of the firefighters and the civilian were transported to NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

New York State mulls study of Sunset Park air quality

Ortiz to conduct a comprehensive study of Sunset Park’s air quality with an eye toward developing ways to mitigate any damaging effects, officials said.

“We share Assemblyman Ortiz’s interest in ensuring cleaner air for Brooklyn residents and will review his request,” DEC officials said in a statement emailed to the Home Reporter on Oct. 24.

The air quality in Sunset Park and its impact on the health of residents could soon be coming under close scrutiny by New York State environmental experts.

Police are looking for a man wanted for groping a woman inside a train station Bay Ridge during a recent morning commute.

Authorities say that on Thursday, Oct. 10 at around 10 a.m., the 32year-old woman was about to get off the R train at the

95th Street and Fourth Avenue station when the suspect stood behind her and rubbed himself against her buttocks.

After the woman screamed, the man fled.

Cops described him as a male around 45-50 years old, 5’9” and 180 pounds.

merican security forces, including military special forces and intelligence agencies, deserve an enormous thank-you from the American people and, for that matter, the world, for actions that resulted this past weekend in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The ISIS leader since 2010 was considered the most wanted terrorist of all and had a $25 million price on his head.

President Trump, who seems to get blamed for every thing, certainly under our Constitution as the nation’s military leader deserves a hearty pat on the back for working with top uniformed personnel and security agencies in approving a series of decisions that

brought about al-Baghdadi’s demise.

In fact, every part of this operation appears to have worked. America is a safer place as a result and justice has been done.

Al-Baghdadi, active in this terrorist organization for almost 20 years, executed or planned actions that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, as well as countless other atrocities.

He had been referred to by many as the most evil person on earth. Sadly, that is a competitive title these days, but without question he got what he deserved.

Thank you, President Trump and the men and women of the armed forces and Intelligence agencies.

*** Since the impeachment inquiry by the Democratic members of the House is predicated on a political calculation, I wonder how these same folks are viewing President Trump today.

I suspect they understand that their efforts will receive a fresh pushback from an invigorated president and his supporters.

Additionally, many other Americans who probably are just as happy not knowing what is going on in Washington but do care about our nation’s safety will question their Democratic representatives about the wisdom of pushing an impeachment effort against the president. *** As much as I strongly

The church sitting down with Andrew Cuomo to coordinate the creation of a Mother Cabrini statue seems wrong. support the idea of a Mother Cabrini statue, I do think the Catholic church in the Diocese of Brooklyn has gone overboard by cooperating with the governor on a state commission tasked with finding a location and creating such a statue using taxpayer dollars, thereby allowing Gov. Cuomo to gain political points with Catholics.

n We d n e s d a y, Oct. 23, dozens of House Republicans stormed a closed-door hearing where an impeachment inquiry deposition was scheduled to begin. They echoed the complaints of the president, who has bemoaned that the process of impeachment is being conducted in secret, his side doesn’t have an opportunity to question witnesses, and he is being denied his right to confront his accuser.

The problem with those contentions is that the first two are completely untrue, while the latter is something he is simply not entitled to.

He either doesn’t understand the aspects of constitutional law at play here or he is hoping the public doesn’t and won’t question him.

Impeachment is the word everyone seems to use to describe the entire process in general, but we actually haven’t even reached that phase.

Although impeachment is not a criminal proceeding, if we made a comparison to that process, the initial investigation is still underway.

We’re currently in the first 15 minutes of an episode of “Law & Order,” in which the detectives are still gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses.

For Presidents Nixon and Clinton, there was either a special prosecutor or an independent counsel who conducted this initial phase and, as in any such investigation, that person didn’t share evidence with the subject, nor allow witnesses to hear other witness testimony before providing theirs.

Robert Mueller did serve as special counsel for the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any related matters that stemmed from it, but the House did not move forward with impeachment

proceedings when his work concluded. It is doing so with respect to issues related to the Ukrainian affair and being that there is no special appointee to conduct an investigation, the three House committees with oversight over the matters in question are performing that function.

The claim that this is all being done in complete secrecy without an opportunity for the other side to participate is preposterous.

And that brings us back to the 30-plus Republicans who stormed a secure facility, cordoned off to protect classified information. The three committees whose members were allowed to be in that room include 47 Republicans. Those GOP committee members can be

Earlier this year, such a bill that went even further was delivered to his desk by the legislature. He signed it with great fanfare. For months, there was debate among Catholics over him being excommunicated for his support of this new law.

The featured speaker was Jeanette Nunez, the lieutenant governor of Florida, who is

a rising star in both the national GOP and conservative movement. In addition, at the event, Gov. George Pataki was recognized on the anniversary of his election 25 years ago.

There were many state legislators and candidates in the room including congressional candidate Nicole Malliotakis. Marty Golden was present as well as Mike Long, who introduced Gov. Pataki and personally deserves credit for his victory.

The Brooklyn Conservative Party as usual was heavily in attendance.

The committee chairs leading the inquiry have already stated that public hearings will follow. And when the impeachment inquiry finally concludes, only then will the House move to consider whether to begin the actual impeachment process.

Being impeached is the

equivalent of being indicted, so the impeachment phase is akin to what a grand jury does. And to be clear, both constitutionally and in practice, grand juries are conducted in secret and the accused do not have sixth amendment rights to confront witnesses accusing them of wrongdoing.

In actuality, impeachment is more favorable to an accused president than the grand jury process is to a criminal suspect.

If the entire process leads to articles of impeachment being drawn up and the House committee votes in favor of those charges, it would go to the entire lower chamber for a full vote.

If a simple majority votes in favor, the president is impeached. This means, in essence, he will have been

indicted, with a trial in the Senate to follow.

Being that removal requires a two-thirds vote of the Senate and it is hard to imagine any scenario in which at least 20 Republicans vote in favor, it has been a foregone conclusion that impeachment is as far as this can go. Some posit that being acquitted in the Senate trial would be a win for President Trump.

If that’s the case, why are Republicans storming closed-door committee hearings? Why are they telling Americans they are shut out of proceedings when 47 of them can attend? Why are they demanding the president have access to be involved with witnesses and accusers that they know he has no right to engage with at this early stage?

olice are looking for a man they say exposed himself to a group of young girls in Park Slope.

According to authorities,

the victims were walking home from school at Sixth Avenue and 15th Street on Oct. 21 at around 2:50 p.m. when the suspect approached them and displayed his genitals.

Cops describe the suspect

as an Hispanic male. When last seen, he was wearing a black baseball cap, blue jeans and a black jacket.

BROOKLYN NAVY YARD — Thousands of Wegmans fans, including some who began lining up at 4 a.m., poured into the city’s first Wegmans supermarket at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Sunday. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole adult life,” said Kimberly Ciaccia, 40, of Brooklyn, who arrived at the new store well before the crack of dawn, according to the New York Post. By noon, at least 30,000 shoppers had visited the 74,000-square-foot store, an employee of the Rochester-based grocery chain told the Post. One woman from the Bronx, Rashida Shabazz, told the Post that she was glad to make the hour-plus commute from her apartment because of the quality of the food. Shabazz, a retiree, had spent the night in her sister’s house in Brooklyn. Others, however, found the crowds disconcerting.

DEED FRAUD ISN’T NEW IN BROOKLYN

BOROUGHWIDE — There has recently been an epidemic of deed fraud in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and other gentrifying neighborhoods. However, the crime is not new, according to the Brownstone Detective website. For example, in 1907, Charles Edgar Appleby, a widower and retired lawyer reportedly worth $25 million, was reading a newspaper that stated that a parcel that he owned had been transferred to “Edith Stonebridge.” It was the first time he had heard of any such transaction, and he immediately wrote to his lawyers. Their investigation, Brownstone Detective said, led to the arrest of Patrick Moore, employed by Guarantee and Trust Company, and John Bough, lessee of the Dry Dock Hotel. Investigators also found that Stonebridge could not be found but was rumored to have “frequently Bowery resorts.” The deed was drawn by Frederick Anderson, a notary, but he couldn’t be found either. Assistant District Attorney Milner told the Eagle at the time, “There is a gang of straw bond men in New York who have for years been working in the courts. Their method is to forge a deed from some old man, transfer the property through three or four [fictitious] persons, until it is difficult to fix the crime upon any one person.”

COMIC ARTS FESTIVAL COMING TO PRATT

CLINTON HILL — The 11th annual Comic Arts Brooklyn Festival is set to return to Pratt Institute on Nov. 2, according to the Brooklyn Paper.

It will feature more than 300 cartoonists showing off their artwork, mini-comics and graphic novels. In addition to young artists showing and selling their comics, prints and art books, this year’s Comic Arts Brooklyn Festival will feature a full day of panel discussions. The next day, the festival will also host the “Cabaret Voltaire” variety show, featuring cartoons, comedy and puppet shows. The variety show will take place at the Market Hotel, 1140 Myrtle Ave. in Bushwick.

UNUSUAL HOTEL TO RISE ON LIVINGSTON STREET

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A 22-story hotel at 291 Livingston St. in Downtown Brooklyn will have an unusual striped façade, according to Brownstoner. Buildings Department records show there will be 103 hotel rooms and a beer garden on the ground floor. A rendering posted on the construction fence shows a thin, angled tower whose facade is covered in black and white stripes, Brownstoner reported.

Since the previous two-story building on the site was razed in 2017, walls for the new building have risen about two stories. The development is set back from the street, so it’s difficult to see. The development firm Hello Living bought the site from John Catsimatidis in 2017.

COPS SEEK DUO WHO TRIED TO ROB DELI

CROWN HEIGHTS — The NYPD is looking for two men whom they say tried to rob a deli in Crown Heights earlier this month, according to PIX11. On Oct. 21, an unidentified man, acting as a lookout, pretended to buy a drink at a deli near the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Place. Another man entered the store and pointed a gun at the man working behind the counter. The armed man threatened the employee and tried to remove cash from the register but was not successful. The two men then fled in an unknown direction without any cash, police said.

W’BURG HASIDIC DELI FEATURED ON WEBSITE

WILLIAMSBURG — Atlas Obscura recently featured Gottlieb’s Restaurant in Williamsburg, one of a small number of glatt kosher delis in the U.S. (Glatt kosher is a type of kashrut that is much stricter than the usual kashrut.) The deli, in the Hasidic area of the neighborhood, was opened in 1962 by a Hungarian holocaust survivor and hasn’t changed much. Although items such as sesame chicken and chicken lo mein have been added, most of the items on the menu are Eastern European mainstays such as goulash, stuffed cabbage, matzoh ball soup and pastrami sandwiches with fried onions.

PARK SLOPE — The Good Coffeehouse series continues at the Old Stone House in Washington Park, Park Slope, on Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. with singer-songwriter Pat Wictor. Wictor, a slide guitarist, is a former member of the folk group Brother Sun. He performs solo shows across the country, and tours as a music educator and collaborator. Tickets are available at the door. The Old Stone House, originally built in 1699 by the Vechte family, was the site of the largest battle of the Revolutionary War, and is now a museum and community center.

B’KLYN MUSICIAN FOCUSES ON AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN SOUNDS

BROOKLYN BRIDGE — A replica of Christopher Columbus’ Santa Maria got stuck in a sand bar off the coast of Brooklyn on Monday afternoon, according to the New York Post. The NAO Santa Maria, which travels to different cities to teach history on the 525th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage, got stuck during low tide as it traveled up the East River toward the Brooklyn Bridge for a photo shoot. Police responded and pushed the ship, but it didn’t break free until the tide went up and dislodged it from the sand bar. The ship finally sailed back to the Brooklyn Army Terminal around 4:30 p.m.

FORT GREENE — Dawn Drake, a performer who specializes in AfroCuban, Brazilian, Caribbean and African music, is performing every Tuesday night with her band ZapOte at 33 Lafayette St., Fort Greene.

She refers to her music as “chronic groove from the global south.”

As a percussionist, she studied extensively in Cuba, Brazil and Ghana before gravitating toward the bass. Her mostly female band puts a premium on highlighting women, and she has done a lot of work with the public-school system and the Brooklyn Arts Council.

‘TWO TOMS’ IN GOWANUS, COP HANGOUT, TO CLOSE

GOWANUS — A bar and Italian restaurant that has been a hangout for police officers and firefighters since it opened in 1948 will be closing shortly after Christmas, according to Patch. The restaurant, Two Toms, has been described as “equal parts social club, American Legion hall and grandpa’s rec room” by New York Eater. Anthony Catapano, the owner of Two Toms, who is planning to retire, says he is selling the building because of the changing landscape of the neighborhood and changing tastes. Catapano took over the restaurant from his late uncle Tom Giordano, one of the original two Toms, Patch said.

COP SEEN PUNCHING TEENS TRANSFERRED OUT OF PRECINCT

SUBWAY SYSTEM — An officer who was caught on camera punching two teens in a wild subway melee in Brooklyn last weekend was transferred on Monday, according to the New York Post. The cop, whose name wasn’t made public, was moved from the 84th Precinct to the Brooklyn Detective Squad. The same officer had many previous complaints filed with the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Some of these included the use of force. The melee began with a fight between two groups of teens. Video from the incident shows officers from the 84th Precinct trying to cuff one of the teens as he appears to pull away, the Post reported. Then, the cop who was transferred ran up to another teen and punched him in the face, starting another brawl. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a former police captain, had called for the cop who punched the teen to be placed on modified duty.

CLINTON HILL — The artist who posted cutouts of brown paper dolls that appeared to be hanging by their necks from strings as Halloween decorations has resigned from her art studio, according to ABC7.

ArtShack Brooklyn announced the resignation of Dany Rose on Friday.

Rose was one of the owners of the studio. Her artwork, which was displayed in the window of her home, was seen by many observers as racially offensive and sparked a large protest, ABC7 reported.

VOLUNTEERS PACK MEALS TO BE SENT TO BAHAMAS

BROOKLYN COLLEGE — On Sunday, about 50 volunteers came to the Brooklyn College Student Center to pack 10,000 rice-and-beans meals to be delivered to food pantries in the hurricane-struck Bahamas. The Category 5 hurricane was the strongest storm on record to make landfall there, Patch said. The food was purchased by the Brooklyn Bridge Rotary Club. Volunteers came from many groups, including St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy and the Brooklyn College Rotary. The food will be sent to the Rotary Club of East Nassau in the Bahamas.

BARCLAYS CENTER — A group of Brooklyn Nets season ticketholders allege that the team took their seats away because they were selling unused tickets on the secondary market, according to the New York Post. Brooklynite Simon Yedid, who says he’s spent $225,000 on season tickets since 2012, said in a lawsuit filed in Brooklyn Supreme

Court that state law gives him the right to resell his tickets when he’s not using them. A group called Smiles 4 Kids Entertainment filed a second, similar lawsuit on Monday, the Post reported.

HEALTH GROUP SET TO BEGIN HOME VISITS

BOROUGHWIDE — RiseBoro, a social services nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, is starting a new program in which health professionals can visit members in their homes for wellness checks.

Although the nonprofit has previously provided preventive services and home care, this will be the first time the services will be paid for by insurance, according to amNewYork. Many of RiseBoro’s clients tend to use the emergency room as their primary care doctor, amNewYork added. The at-home visits, set to begin in November, will involve talking with clients about their health conditions as well as assessing the quality of their home environment and daily living conditions. RiseBoro hopes to target a wide range of chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

WOULD-BE NONPROFIT SITE TO HOUSE UPSCALE DEVELOPMENT

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A century-old office building in BedfordStuyvesant will be turned into upscale residences or workspaces, despite state officials’ original intention of having a local nonprofit use the building to create jobs, according to THE CITY. The nonprofit group, Voras Enterprise, which is affiliated with the Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corp., sold the former state-owned building for $12 million in June to a company known as Rivington Company LLC. NEBHDCo poured $940,000 into running the building, but it still lost money and the building is largely empty, THE CITY reported. After Voras found itself in bankruptcy court, Bankruptcy Judge Nancy Hershey Lord expedited the sale over the objections of Jeffrey Dunston, president of Voras as well as CEO of NEBHDCo. Meanwhile, tenants of residential buildings owned by NEBHDCo are protesting conditions there, THE CITY said.

CONVERSION OF GREENPOINT BANK ANNEX IS UNDERWAY

GREENPOINT — The Greenpoint Savings Bank Annex at 1080 Lorimer St. has been renamed “The Helm” and is being redeveloped to house 29 one- to three-bedroom luxury residences, according to Greenpointers. The lower levels will house duplex townhouse-style units, and the third and fourth floors will have nine units. The Landmarks Preservation Commission signed off on the bank annex conversion in May 2016, Greenpointers reported. The domed bank building itself, at Manhattan Avenue and Noble Street, was built in 1906 and is now home to a Capital One branch. The annex is within the Greenpoint Historic District.

W’BURG REAL ESTATE FIRM TO BUILD 7-STORY BUILDING

WILLIAMSBURG — CW Realty is purchasing a large Williamsburg portfolio for about $39 million, according to The Real Deal. The firm is building the full blockfront on Hope Street between Keap and Rodney streets, along with space on Keap and Rodney streets themselves. CW Realty, owned by Cheskie Weisz, plans to build a 145-unit, seven-story rental building on the site with a doorman and a fitness center. Thirty percent of the building’s units will be affordable, The Real Deal said. CW is also involved in several other Williamsburg residential projects that are underway.

SALAZAR STILL DOESN’T HAVE A BROOKLYN OFFICE

CENTRAL BROOKLYN — State Sen. Julia Salazar has been in office for a year but still hasn’t opened a district office in which to meet her Brooklyn constituents, according to the New York Post. Salazar’s website lists her “temporary” district office as 250 Broadway in lower Manhattan, rather than within her senatorial district, which runs from GreenpointWilliamsburg to East New York, the Post said. In a recent interview with Kings County Politics, Salazar blamed her delay in renting an office on fiscal and bureaucratic snafus. “Whenever we find spaces — and we’ve found a lot — they have not met the pretty strict requirements, budgetwise and otherwise, of the Senate,” she told the website.

GAGE & TOLLNER COMES BACK TO LIFE

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Untapped Cities recently took readers inside the redevelopment of the ground-floor storefront at 372 Fulton St., most recently a discount jewelry and clothing store, back into Gage & Tollner, one of the city’s oldest restaurants, which occupied the site for almost 100 years. The eatery closed in the mid1990s, and the space was home first to a T.G.I. Friday’s and then to an Arby’s before it ceased being a restaurant. Its original wall panels, arched mirrors and chandeliers are being brought back to their original appearance. Unlike in the original restaurant, the overhead lights will not have the capability to be lit with gas, as they were on special occasions way back when, but will now be totally electric.

There will be a glass case on the second floor to hold artifacts, such as an ashtray from the original Gage & Tollner.

sales leading up to the Making Strides Brooklyn Walk on Oct. 20. At the same time, staff in appropriate roles began “Casual Fridays,” when, for a small donation, staff are permitted to wear jeans to work.

“Staff, patients and families alike enjoy our Pink Wednesday events, and truly come together to show their generosity in hopes to one day find a cure,” said Roman, whose department raised more than $6,000 in a single day. “It’s a labor of love, and it is truly heartwarming to see individuals touched by

breast cancer in some way, work collaboratively for the cause.”

Additionally, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island hosted two new fundraising events this year: Strike Out Breast Cancer and Bowling for a Cure.

MCU Park, which is the site of Making Strides Brooklyn, hosted Strike Out Cancer night.

More than 100 staff members and their families attended a Brooklyn Cyclones game against the Vermont Lake Monsters, and the Cyclones donated a portion of the ticket sales back to the hospital’s Making Strides

efforts.

“The Brooklyn Cyclones and MCU Park were fantastic hosts, and went above and beyond to promote the hospital’s efforts,” said Terrio, who coordinated the event. “It was fantastic to see our staff and their families come together for a fun night and a great cause in the community in which we serve.”

The hospital’s pharmacy department hosted a bowling tournament in October at Shell Lanes. Following a spirited competition, a first place trophy was awarded to the winning team, while proceeds were donated to Making Strides Brooklyn.

At the culmination of this

awareness month, Making Strides Brooklyn, Terrio and De Gennaro were joined by Mei Kong, RN, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer, to cut the ribbon to begin the inspiring event.

Although a final tally won’t be available until the end of November, the hospital has already raised more than $28,000.

In addition to funds raised, the hospital raised something that is equally as important as money: awareness. “At the end of the day, we want South Brooklyn to know we are here for them, and we’re proud to serve this community and provide exceptional care,” said Kong.

Eye Health for Older Adults: Reducing Risks of Age-Related Eye Diseases As people age, they are at higher risk for certain eye diseases and conditions, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

“While many of these diseases and conditions have no warning signs, they can be detected in their early stages during a comprehensive eye exam,” says Dr. Bruce Rosenthal, chief of low vision services at Lighthouse Guild, the leading organization dedicated to addressing and preventing vision loss. The key to saving sight is early detection and treatment.”

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among adults over 50. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision. A variety of treatments can help reduce the risk of vision loss in people with AMD. Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that causes vision loss and is very common in older people. Surgery is the only effective treatment. It is one of the most common surgeries in the US.

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that damages blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up care can reduce the risk of vision loss by 95 percent.

Glaucoma can cause fluid and pressure to build up in the eye and damage the optic nerve.

It first affects side vision, but can lead to total vision loss without treatment Treating Low Vision Low vision describes vision loss that makes daily tasks difficult. “Normal aging of the eye does not lead to low vision; it is a result of eye diseases, injuries or both,” says Rosenthal. Low vision symptoms include loss of central and/or peripheral vision, blurred or hazy vision or night blindness.

“If you experience any of these problems, it is important to see your ophthalmologist, who will check for and treat any underlying conditions and advise on resources, aids and devices — including brighter

lighting — to help with reading and other daily tasks,” Rosenthal explains.

Systemic health problems like high blood pressure can affect eye health, and the ability to see clearly can change frequently. “Keep your ophthalmologist informed about your health conditions and use of medications and nutritional supplements, as well as your exercise, eating, sleeping and other lifestyle choices,” Rosenthal advises.

Preventing Vision Loss Those with a family history of conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetes are at greater risk of developing these eye conditions. Early detection is the key to preserving vision.

Diabetics are especially at risk. People with diabetes should schedule a complete eye examination that includes a dilated fundus exam (an evaluation of the retina) to look for very early signs of the condition.

In addition to regular comprehensive eye exams, which

can detect problems before noticeable vision loss occurs, many lifestyle factors can play an important role in protecting vision as we age.

Following these recommendations will support eye health: •Eating a balanced diet including dark, leafy greens and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids.

•Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising.

•Getting enough sleep to rest and continuously lubricate the eyes.

•Quitting smoking.

•Keeping diabetes under control.

•Wearing sunglasses and a brimmed hat outdoors.

•Wearing protective eyewear during vigorous activity.

•Avoiding falls with slipproof rugs and secure railings.

•Discussing your family’s eye health history with your eye care professional.

Champions of Justice gala raises money for breast cancer, saluting women in the law

The Brooklyn legal community showed off its members’ support for each other and the collegiality they share during the Champions of Justice ceremony that honored women in the law, hosted by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on Tuesday night.

Some of the highlights of the event included three full tables of assistant district attorneys cheering and giving a standing ovation to support their chief of staff Maritza Mejia-Ming, multiple tables of hooting and hollering in support of RoseAnn Branda, and Tom Moore bragging that his wife Judith Livingston had successfully tried 35 cases that each resulted in at least a $1 million jury verdict.

A total of 26 women were honored and the themes of their speeches often had nothing to do with themselves, but instead were about the other women who helped them along their paths, or the co-honorees they were proud to share the spotlight with.

“We’ve come together this evening to recognize and celebrate women in leadership at all levels in the Brooklyn community,” Justice DiMango continued.

“While it’s true that we can’t all be Ruth Bader Ginsbergs or even Judge Judys, we all got here tonight by being success stories in our own right.”

Justice DiMango set the tone early when she explained some of the obstacles that she had to overcome to get where she is. She said that even though her path wasn’t always direct, she was often forced to adapt and became a better attorney and judge because of it.

An example shared by Justice DiMango, who had always wanted to be an administrative judge in Brooklyn, happened when she was transferred to the Bronx Supreme Court. Instead of sulking, she used the transfer as an opportunity to prove that she was ready for the job in Brooklyn. It ultimately got her the attention of Judge Judy, the famous TV judge who produces Justice DiMango’s show.

“Don’t focus on whether or not you have been slighted, because there is a good chance that you have been,” Justice DiMango joked. “My Bronx assignment could have been a disaster because on its face it was definitely not a favorable assignment. But I had a choice, and that was to view it as such or use it as an opportunity to make a name for myself.”

Branda, who was presented with the Wonder Woman Award by her law partner Frank Carone, the president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, was the first to be honored. She was followed by Judy Livingston and then Marianne Bertuna.

The nominees were all chosen by the various bar associations located in Brooklyn because of their distinguished careers and contributions to the bar and the legal community.

The money raised from the event is being donated to JALBCA, the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert. Justices Marsha Steinhardt and Ellen Spodek were on hand and were thanked for their efforts in coordinating that effort.

MURPHY, Dennis Patrick — Born July 1, 1962, reached his “end of watch” on Friday morning with his wife Mary Lu by his side, after a courageous battle with 9/11-related cancer.

He attended Paul Smith’s College, where he met his wife, and they both earned their degree in forestry. After appointment to the New York City Police Department on January 21, 1985, his tenacity and dedication to the job allowed for a rapid rise through the ranks. He earned the rank of detective in March 1992, and was promoted to detective second grade in

After 9/11, due to his career experience, he was assigned to the morgue. Dennis worked identifying and cataloguing remains, and provided invaluable closure for many victims’ families. Although retired, after his 2017 diagnosis he continued to help others as he worked tirelessly to bring awareness to fellow first responders. Dennis was relentless in his work with the Fealgood Foundation, H.O.P.S. and WTC Registry, helping to register many people, and went on to be instrumental in the passing of the VCF Bill.

In 2007, Dennis retired to his dream home on Trout Lake, where he spent as much time on the water as possible. He loved to hunt, golf, boat on Trout Lake and spend time with his family.

Dennis is predeceased by parents Caroline and Jerry Murphy.

He is survived by beloved wife, Mary Lu, sons Sean (Kayla) and Brian, as well as siblings Timmy (Annmarie) and Patti (Paul).

Dennis will also be missed by in-laws Sonja and John, and his nieces and nephews, Caroline, Paul Blaize, Jamie and TJ. Arrangements handled by the Alexander Funeral Home, Warrensburg, New York, and Marine Park Funeral Home.

You can walk from Boerum Hill to Brownsville. What a splendid slice of Brooklyn’s built environment.

If you move at a normal pace, you can complete this stroll in a single outing. It took me two days. I blame my slow speed on the fact that I photographed buildings on almost every block. A zookeeper I recently interviewed suggested my spirit animal is a sloth. (I’d always assumed it’s a tiger, which is my college’s mascot.)

Previously published Part One of my Bergen Street walk included Boerum Hill, Park Slope and Prospect Heights.

Today’s story is Part Two, which is about Crown Heights and the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville.

On the northeast side of the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Bergen Street, which is outside the M-Crown district, oldfashioned rowhouses are eye-pleasers.

I started at the intersection of Bergen Street and Grand Avenue in Crown Heights. Between Grand and Franklin avenues, the north side of Bergen Street is a border of the proposed MAN EYE-CATCHING STATUE Crown district. — Continued from page 12INB — LANDMARKED CHURCHES Bergen Street passes into the landmarked part of Crown Heights North to the east of the intersection of Nostrand Avenue.

When you stand at that corner and look left up Nostrand Avenue, you’ll notice beautiful Bedford Central Presbyterian Church.

The congregation’s origins date back to the early 1850s.

The religious group affiliated with the Presbyterians in 1894, the church’s website says.

The brick and terra-cotta church building is Romanesque Revival in its architectural style. The original portion of the building was constructed around 1897 and an enlargement was constructed around 1906, a city Landmarks Preservation Commission historic-district designation report says.

When you keep walking, you’ll see Neo-Grec brownstones built in the 1870s and Romanesque-Revival rowhouses built in the 1880s.

One of the prettiest clusters of Romanesque Revival homes on this stroll can be found on the corner of Bergen Street and New York Avenue. An architect named Charles Infanger designed and built the row of five buildings, whose addresses are 124 to 132 New York Ave., a designation report notes.

(I’m not being specific about which designation report is which because there are three of them about different sections of Crown Heights North.)

On another Bergen Street and New York Avenue corner, you’ll see lovely brick-and-sandstone Union United Methodist Church and its school and parsonage. The complex has multiple addresses including 121 New York Ave. It was constructed between 1889 and 1891.

The church’s designer was J.C. Cady & Co., a firm that was considered a leader in the use of Romanesque-Revival architectural style back in the day, an LPC designation report says.

JULIET BALCONIES There are such lovely houses along there. For instance, as you walk between New York and Brooklyn avenues, you’ll see an unusual cluster of seven houses between 1187 and 1199 Bergen St. that was constructed in 1894.

It’s unusual because the bricks that the houses are made of are the color of limestone, and they’re paired with bands of actual limestone. The pale hues are pretty together, especially since the roofs are made of contrasting red-clay tiles. Architectural details like Juliet balconies and curved window bays are interspersed among the houses.

Albert E. White was the architect of this Romanesque-Revival grouping; John A. Bliss was the developer and original owner, a designation report says.

If I described every Crown Heights North Bergen Street house that pleased my eye, it would take you a year to read this story.

On the block between Brooklyn and Kingston avenues, flowers are still growing outside 1282 Bergen St. In 1898, F.K. Taylor designed and built the row next to it, which extends from 1284 to 1298 Bergen St. The facade of one house is vanilla-hued, another is strawberry-colored and a third is a deep shade of chocolate, a combination that calls to mind Neapolitan ice cream.

The Bergen block between Kingston and Albany avenues has a nice surprise to offer. Partway down the block, on the north side of the street, you find the entrance to Revere Place.

This is a landmarked street that runs for a single block between Bergen and Dean streets.

There are 24 houses on Revere Place. The developer of all the homes was John A. Bliss, whom I just mentioned. He built them in 1896 and 1897. Once again, he teamed up with architect Albert E. White.

This new development is 2178 Bergen St. at the corner of Mother Gaston Boulevard.

The houses’ style is a combination of Romanesque Revival and Renaissance Revival.

The landmarked part of Crown Heights North ends before the intersection of Albany Avenue.

WEEKSVILLE HERITAGE CENTER

You can see Weeksville Heritage Center’s historic houses through the fence on Bergen Street.

After you cross Troy Avenue, you’ll pass FDNY’s Rescue Company Number 2 firehouse at 1472 Bergen St. It stands beside a section of St. John’s Park called Buddy Keaton Fields.

Past the intersection of Schenectady Avenue, Tamra Teahouse at 1524 Bergen St. is a good spot to take a break. Eater NY calls the restaurant an “under-the-radar Crown Heights Asian-Afro gem.” The butternut squash curry is great, by the way.

After you pass the intersection of Rochester Avenue, you will find Weeksville Heritage Center.

Through a fence, you can see historic wood-frame houses from a community James Weeks established in 1838 for free, landowning African-Americans. The houses stand on a gravel path that’s a remnant of Hunterfly Road, which was a Native American trail and later a street in Weeksville.

You should plan a visit to Weeksville Heritage Center if you haven’t been there lately. I had the privilege of touring the houses last spring. It’s an extraordinary experience.

At that time, Weeksville Heritage Center was raising money through a CrowdRise donations campaign to avoid closing. The fund-raising effort was successful.

In June, thanks to elected officials’ advocacy, the city designated Weeksville Heritage Center as a member of its Cultural Institutions Group. This means the museum will receive unrestricted operating grants from the city Department of Cultural Affairs, which also will pay the heat, light and power bills.

On the far side of Buffalo Avenue, there’s one more Bergen Street block within the boundaries of Crown Heights. The barrelvaulted rowhouses on this block are eye-pleasers.

If you swing around the block to Howard Avenue, you will find that Bergen Street becomes accessible to the public once again. The block that begins here is full of beautiful, old-fashioned rowhouses.

“The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn,” a book edited by historians Kenneth Jackson and John Manbeck, identifies the neighborhood you’re now walking through as the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville.

At the next Bergen Street intersection, there’s a handsome 80-unit apartment complex that uses 331 Saratoga Ave. as its address. It was built a couple years ago.

Half the units are for very-low income and low-income tenants; the other half are studios for formerly homeless people.

Beyond the new apartment building, the rest of the Bergen Street block is filled with eye-pleasing rowhouses.

As Bergen Street proceeds towards Eastern Parkway Extension, the terrain becomes hilly, which makes sense given the neighborhood’s name.

Bergen Street ends nearby at East New York Avenue.

There, a new, 33-unit rental-apartment building is being developed. Seven of the apartments are affordable units for people who earn 40 percent of Area Median Income. This puts them in the category of very-low income tenants.

When you’ve finished your stroll, if you need a subway to get home, Broadway Junction is a few blocks away. The A, C, J, Z and L trains stop here.

OCEAN HILL

The church at left is beautiful Bedford Central Presbyterian Church.

Ralph Avenue is the border of Crown Heights.

When you reach the intersection, you might think this is the end of Bergen Street because you encounter a fenced-in compound.

The New York City Children’s Center is located behind the fence. It’s a State Office of Mental Health facility for children and teens, with an outpatient clinic, day-treatment programs and other helpful things.

Provocative new production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”

ig Daddy and Maggie the Cat have come to Brooklyn in a provocative new production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” the iconic American play by Tennessee Williams. Performed by the Gallery Players and directed by Owen Thompson, the show offers a dynamic new vision of the captivating Pulitzer Prize winning classic.

“Blood pounds through the veins of this play as powerfully as any I can think of, and Tennessee Williams gives us some of his most vibrant characters with the matchless lyricism that made him — in my opinion — the greatest American playwright,” Thompson told this paper.

The cast includes veterans of Broadway and local actors performing in the scorching, hard-hitting drama from one of the 20th century’s greatest playwrights.

Amanda McCallum explained what inspired her to play the role of Maggie. “Maggie is one of the greatest creations ever written for the stage,” said McCallum. “It’s a dream role for actresses."

“What director wouldn’t want to get their hands on a play by Mr. Williams at the height of his powers?

And considering this play in 2019, one is struck by a new resonance,” said

Thompson. “The suffocating atmosphere of mendacity that poisons 1955 Mississippi in ‘Cat’ — a society built on slavery by white people blind to their privilege and who pathologically lie to themselves and each other — feels uncomfortably like the America in which we currently find ourselves.

“Playgoers who come to our production will experience one that embraces Mr. Williams’ rhapsodic tenderness without shying away from his lacerating view of what human beings are capable of at their lowest, his exploration of, as Mr. Williams himself put it, ‘the shocking duality of the human heart,’” Thompson added.

The play runs through Sunday, Nov. 10. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Saturdays (November 2 and 9) at 2 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. There will be an artist talk-back following the Sunday, Nov. 3 performance.

Bay Ridge Community Council and Maimonides host ‘An Evening of Health’

t was all about prevention and wellness at “An Evening of Health,” a joint endeavor sponsored by the Bay Ridge Community Council and Maimonides Medical Center.

The BRCC, well-known for its community service and volunteerism, hosted the event and introduced three top Maimonides medical professionals to talk about health concerns and preventive measures.

The health fair took place on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at St. Anselm Catholic Academy, 365 83rd St. Bay Ridge Community Council President Ralph Succar welcomed guests and First Vice President Ilene Sacco was the emcee.

Succar called the synergy between Maimonides and the BRCC a marriage made in heaven. “Here you have a community organization that really cares about its community as well as a medical center that also really cares about the community,” said Succar. He added that it was all about information and thanked Maimonides for providing it for free.

Kate Cucco, administrative manager at Maimonides, was delighted with the turnout. “Maimonides is really

Speaking at the event were Dr. David Silver, chief of urology and director, prostate center; Dr. Donna Marie Manasseh, director, breast surgery; and Dr. Edward Chapnick, director, infectious diseases.

Silver said that there were only two essential messages he wished to convey.

“The first message is hope,” he said. “The Prostate Center represents hope for all men in Brooklyn with prostate cancer or with concerns about prostate cancer. The

second message is a call to action. Prostate screening saves lives. Just do it,” he added.

Chapnick said he was there to talk about the importance of getting a flu shot and how effective it is in preventing the flu. He also spoke about a new shingles vaccine that has a high success rate and said that even if someone has had shingles in the past, the new vaccine is necessary.

“Shingles is reactive,” he explained. “It’s the chickenpox virus. Even once the shingles goes away, the virus is still in your body. So, if you’re over 50, you should have the shot.”

Manasseh said that the most important thing one can do for breast cancer awareness is to educate people. “I can give you all the numbers about how

Leo Lykourezos serves guests at BRCC’s first annual “An Evening of Health.” mammograms save lives, all the numbers we have about how therapy can save lives, but if patients don’t come in to get the mammogram, come in to get the screening, it can’t save anybody’s life,” said Manasseh.

“The purpose of events like this is basically to

educate the community and let them know that, number one, we are not very scary and that the disease is actually very treatable. We have lots of options for all stages of the disease, and I think the more you educate the community, the better our numbers are in terms of

survival,” added Manasseh.

Guests had an opportunity to ask questions and interact directly with physicians, and there was a free PSA screening for anyone who wished to be tested.

Maimonides Prostate Center Coordinator Jeffrey Nguyen was available for the screenings. “We need to educate the public about prostate health,” Nguyen told this paper. “We’re here to talk to men between the ages of 45 and 75 about the importance of prostate screening. All men should be screened and those with a family history of prostate cancer must be screened.”
