The new building planned for Third Avenue and 81st Street will have 32 rental units, parking for 16 cars and a small retail space on the ground floor.

Thirty-two units of housing with parking for half of them will be coming to the Third Avenue lot that, for the past several years, has served as parking for Brooklyn Market, the supermarket across the street. Michael Niamonitakis of Meridian Properties, LLC, the group behind the develop-

ment of the new five-story rental building that will replace the Brooklyn Market parking lot at 8101 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, told this paper, “The building will include a fitness room, a bike room, virtual package room, storage rooms and a roof deck. ... For some tenants who work at home, they will have the option of going downstairs and having internet access, printers, scanners and a coffee station.”

Colton says his office inundated with frantic calls on retaining wall BY PAULA KATINAS PAULA @BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

A decision by the New York City Department of Buildings to rescind notices of violation it had sent to homeowners living along the B, N and Q subway lines over the condition of retaining walls on their properties was met with a sigh of relief from residents and local officials. Assemblymember William

Colton said his office had been inundated with phone calls from angry homeowners in his district who live next to the N train line “who received and are still receiving Notices of Violation from the NYCDOB Commissioner Melanie E. La Rocca about the retaining wall behind their properties, which I believe is actually the property of the city.”    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

In addition, Niamonitakis said that there will be a single approximately 250-squarefoot retail space on the first floor that might hold a small coffee shop. Niamonitakis owns Meridian Properties along with his cousin, also named Michael Neamonitakis, but spelled with an “e.” Meridian has owned the lot for the past 10 years.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Mail “fishing” is going out of style, thanks to newer postal boxes on the streets, according to U.S. Rep. Max Rose, who came to Dyker Heights Thursday to tout a big change made by the U.S. Postal Service. Rose stood outside the Dyker Heights Post Office at 8320 13th Ave. and announced that the USPS has completed a project to upgrade all of the old sidewalk mailboxes in the 11th Congressional District, the district he represents. The new upgraded, tamper-proof mailboxes are designed to prevent mail theft. Rose called the upgraded mailboxes “a win for this community.” In the past few years, clever thieves have stolen mail out of sidewalk mailboxes by employing a method known as mail fishing. The crooks fish for mail by placing a sticky substance, like glue, on a rock or a stick, attaching the stick to a string and lowering it into the mailbox. The stick becomes attached to pieces of mail, which the thieves then haul back up to the surface.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Treyger pumps money into commercial street cleanups BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

The sidewalks on 86th Street are going to be a lot cleaner, thanks to stepped-up cleaning efforts and more frequent litter basket collections by the city. Councilmember Mark Treyger held a press conference outside Lenny’s Pizza at 1969 86th St. Thursday to announce that he had secured $260,000 in city funds to be used as part of the NYC Clean-Up Initiative in commercial areas in Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend and Coney Island. The NYC Clean-Up Initiative is a program started by the City Council to allow individual councilmembers to use their discretionary budget funds to pay for cleaning services for buildings, sidewalks and street in their districts.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Bay Ridge residents fed up over vandalized vehicles along Shore Road BY JAIME DEJESUS

JDEJESUS @BROOKLYNREPORTER.COM

Car vandalism is on the rise in Bay Ridge, according to locals, police and elected officials, much to the frustration of residents. Bay Ridge resident Gale Young was recently a victim. She found out on Wednesday that perps had keyed her car doors and slashed her tires. “A couple of weeks ago, I was outside talking to some neighbors and one of them mentioned that cars along Narrows in the mid 80s had been vandalized,” said Young, who lives

near 87th Street and Shore Road. Because Young rarely parks in that area, she thought her vehicle was safe. The damage was on the passenger side of the car, so Young didn’t see it immediately. “I got inside, got out of the parking spot and felt the car dragging,” she said. “It’s a brand new car. So I made a u-turn and pulled into another spot where I could see better, thinking maybe I ran over a nail or got a flat tire. Well I found out I had two flat tires and the whole passenger side was keyed.”  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

A pre-Veterans Day brunch, hosted by the Brooklyn Young Republicans Club was held on Saturday, Nov. 9 to honor veterans for their service to our country. All veterans were invited to the annual free brunch at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, 9511 Fourth Avenue in Bay Ridge. Among the community leaders attending to break bread with the vets were former State Sen. Marty Golden; New York State Conservative Party Chair Jerry Kassar; Brooklyn Conservative Party Chair Fran Vella-Marrone; Vito Bruno, president of the Edmund G. Seergy Republican Club; and Brooklyn GOP Executive Director Stephen Maresca.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

For the fifth year in a row, William McKinley students gathered in their auditorium on Friday, Nov. 8 to receive heartfelt messages from local veterans, and to recognize and celebrate all that veterans have done for this country. Jessica Amato, English Language Arts teacher and event coordinator, is responsible for community outreach for McKinley. Amato spearheaded the Veterans Day ceremony, which included a performance by students from all four of her classes. Attending the presentation were members of the school community including students from various grades, their fam-

ilies, PTA members, local veterans, civic leaders, members of Community Board 10, UFT District Representative Ellen Driesen and Assemblymember Peter Abbate. This year’s theme was a salute to the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day. Amato had her students write essays entitled, “One hundred words for 100 years.” Demonstrating democracy in action, Amato also had students vote on the best essays, and of her approximately 120 students, four of her students were “elected” to read their 100-word essay on stage at the ceremony. Winners and readers of the essay contest were Qiuyu Ye (Leo), Ashley Yhen, Yaolin Tan and Ava Wang.    For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Veterans have opening to join FDNY with new state law Sponsored in Albany by Gounardes, Abbate

BY PAULA KATINAS

PAULA@BROOKLYNEAGLE.COM

A bill sponsored by two Southwest Brooklyn elected officials to make it easier for military veterans to join the Fire Department of New York has been signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The legislation sponsored by State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Assemblymember Peter Abbate, both Democrats, will clear a path to allow veterans to become first responders by amending existing state law to extend the qualifying period

for veterans. Under the old law, veterans were allowed to deduct up to six years off their age in order to meet the age requirement of 29 to join the FDNY. The new amendment will permit them to deduct up to seven years. The law seeks to assist veterans whose military deployments might have kept them from applying for the FDNY sooner. “America’s veterans deserve the best when they come home, and here in New York, we are doing every-

thing possible to make it easier for them to join the workforce. While some public service work opportunities put an age limit on eligible applicants, veterans deserve a reasonable accommodation, since many of them were serving our country during the time that they would have been eligible for these opportunities,” said Abbate, whose district includes parts of Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Sunset Park. Cuomo signed the bill on Veterans Day. This year marked the 100th anniver-

sary of the celebration of Veterans Day. "Any person who puts their life on the line for our country deserves our unending gratitude and respect. With the passage of this bill, we are helping selfless people who have the desire to enter into public service as firefighters after already serving our nation in the military. This is the right thing to do, and I'm glad this commonsense change will be made,” said Gounardes, who represents Bay Ridge and Southwest Brooklyn.  For the full story, see brooklynreporter.com.

Despite Dem dominance, Brooklyn GOP director sees bright future BY PAULA KATINAS

New York City is a Democratic Party bastion, but the new executive director of the Kings County Republican Party isn’t all doom and gloom about his party’s future in the Big Apple. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Steve Maresca, who was tapped to serve as executive director of the Brooklyn GOP at the party’s county convention at the Bay Ridge Manor on Oct. 4, said he sees reason for hope for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 elections, particularly in Bay Ridge. He insisted that his optimism is well-founded, despite the devastating losses in 2018 of longtime Republican State Senator Marty Golden and GOP congressmember Dan Donovan. “The next three years are going to be critical, not only in Brooklyn, but in New York State,” Maresca told the Home Reporter. Next year will not only have a presidential election, but on the local level, one of the most anticipated congressional races will take place if Republican Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, as expected, runs against incumbent Democrat Max Rose in the 11th Congressional District covering large parts of Southwest Brooklyn and all of

gubernatorial race. “Andrew Cuomo has indicated that he wants to run for a fourth term. I think he will be vulnerable,” Maresca said. As executive director of the Brooklyn GOP, Maresca will be working closely with Republican County Chairperson Ted Ghorra. Ghorra, who first elected in 2016, was re-elected at the Oct. 4 convention. The other officers elected at the convention were Vice Chairperson Georgea Kontzamanis, Secretary Raymond Reilly and Treasurer Thomas McCarthy. “I liken it to a corporate structure where you have a CEO and a COO. I feel like Ted is the CEO and I’m the COO. The party is run by Ted. He is the ultimate boss,” Maresca said. But Maresca added that the role of executive director is a fluid one and that he is free to shape it any way he wants. He will play a role in recruiting candidates to run for public office and will be developing campaign strategies for specific candidates, for example. Maresca will be juggling a busy career as a financial advisor with his political work. The born-and-bred Brooklynite is a graduate of Xaverian High School and St. John’s University. He is one of the founders of the Verrazzano Republican Club in Bay Ridge. The club is led

by Liam McCabe. There has been intra-party fighting in the Brooklyn GOP in recent years, particularly when Golden was the state senator and held great sway over the party. At the time, Craig Eaton was the party chairperson and the two were locked in perpetual battle. Maresca, who has a long history with the Brooklyn GOP that dates back to the Reagan administration, said he has always managed to get along well with all of the warring factions in the party. He can identify with the struggles candidates face. He has run for public office on several occasions. In 1989, he challenged incumbent Democratic Councilmember Sal Albanese. He lost that race. In 1992, he ran against Assemblymember Eileen Dugan and was defeated. In 1998, he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination to challenge longtime Assemblymember Peter Abbate. Since 2015, Maresca has served as the Republican Party’s district leader in the 49th Assembly District. His coleader is Angela Petit.

Staten Island. But Malliotakis would first have to win a Republican Party primary. On Nov. 9, Joseph Caldarera, a former sex crimes prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, announced that he intends to run for the seat. A Rose-Malliotakis matchup would be a hot race, according to most political observers. Maresca said he thinks Malliotakis, if she prevails in a primary, would have a great chance of unseating Rose, especially with President Donald Trump at the top of the ticket. Trump is deeply unpopular in most of New York, but remains a favorite in the Staten Island portion of the 11th C.D. “It would be a hard-fought race. But Nicole has 10 years in the Assembly. She is a known quantity,” Maresca said. “I also think the Trump vote will come out next year and that will help Nicole.” In addition to the House race, freshman State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, a Democrat representing Bay Ridge and several other neighborhoods in southern Brooklyn, will be running for reelection in 2020 and Maresca said he feels confident the GOP can find a good candidate to run against him. The following year, there will be City Council races. In 2022, it will be time for a

One of Bay Ridge’s hardest working community advocates suffered significant injuries in a moped accident on Thursday, Nov. 7, while staying in Bermuda. Initially the prognosis seemed grim for Chip Cafiero, with reports of fractured ribs and collapsed lungs. An updated report says that Cafiero had five fractured ribs and that one of the ribs had punctured his lung. He also sustained numerous bruises, according to former State Sen. Marty Golden, a lifelong friend of Cafiero’s. “His family flew down to Bermuda to be with him,” Golden told this paper. “The good news is that he’s going to be fine. But he still can’t leave the island and he can’t take a plane. And he won’t be able to come back by ship until next Friday at the earliest. He’s still under strict doctor’s care.” Emil (“Chip”) Cafiero has spent his whole life in Bay Ridge. He’s been involved with a number of community organizations over the last 45 years, most notably as the event manager of the Third Avenue Festival. He has also created and run the Fifth Avenue Festival and the 86th Street Bensonhurst Festival

since their formation 25 years ago. Cafiero was recently honored at the BRAVO Volunteer Ambulance’s 45th anniversary dinner for his civic leadership, along with Golden. “We go back to when we were kids,” said Golden. “We grew up together. We were both brought up to give back and if anyone gave back, Chip did. Third Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Christmas lights, the concert series — Chip did it all.” Because the hospital in Bermuda does not accept insurance from non-residents, a GoFundMe page was set up by Cafiero’s friend Donna

Byrnes along with members of Cafiero’s family to help with the costs of his hospital stay. “Chip is a very proud person and he’s going to be so mad at me for doing this, but you know Chip gives so much to the community that it’s his turn to receive,” said Byrnes, who added she was also planning to help organize a benefit for him. Golden was just happy to learn that Cafiero is steadily improving. “We do expect to see him back, but he is a hurting puppy right now. Hopefully, he’ll feel better as each day goes by. But the important thing is that he’s going to be okay,” Golden added.

PUT IT IN THE BOOKS

T

his past Tuesday’s elections in New York State generally had a positive outcome for the Conservative and Republican Parties. Without any election being certified, it would appear that the Democratic Party was swept out of office in the Nassau County town of Hempstead, the largest town in the nation with a population of 770,000 people. The GOP/Conservative alliance solidly held the town of Oyster Bay, with the end result being 75 percent of local government in Nassau is under GOP/Conservative leadership. There were other larger towns and cities such as Yorktown in Westchester County and the city of Canandaigua in upstate Ontario County that also saw entire Democratically-controlled governments completely flip. There are important too-close-to-call elections

in places like the town of Colonie in Albany County and the District Attorney’s Office in Ulster County. The county government in Clinton County flipped Republican and the same is likely to happen in Cayuga County when the recount is completed. It is also worth noting that in many places including Dutchess County, Broome County (Binghamton) and Onondaga County (Syracuse), the Republican/ Conservative GOP control was renewed. Even in the city, the GOP and Conservatives won a Civil Court seat on the Democratic majority North Shore of Staten Island. I suspect the newly elected Democratic County leader Assemblymember Michael Cusick was not expecting to start his tenure with such a loss. This is not to say the Democratic Party was shut out. It held important county

executive offices against fierce competition in Suffolk and Erie County, plus, for only the second time in over 80 years, it won the county executive spot in Monroe County. Early voting was generally successful although it is expensive. There are some bugs that need to be worked out — all easily correctable. One interesting outcome of early voting will likely be permanent absentee ballots and military ballots making up a greater percentage of the post-election votes counted. These have in the past leaned Republican. If that remains the case, the GOP will have the advantage on very close races. I have one other takeaway. High taxes and the liberal concessions made this past year in an effort to reform the criminal justice system hurt the Democratic Party. In elections for district attorney where it was

I suspect the heavy media coverage of the state releasing 900 jailed individuals and the mayor giving them free Mets tickets did not go unnoticed in these races. In Hempstead, Democrats and Republicans both agree that high property taxes were the issue. Turnout, even with early voting, was incredibly low

his past week, a video of a churro vendor being put in handcuffs inside a subway station went viral, eliciting criticism of the response by many, followed by criticism of that criticism by others. State Sen. Andrew Gounardes, in a tweet, questioned the priorities of the MTA in focusing on this as a problem while so many outer-borough residents deal with service issues on a daily basis. Some then engaged in discussions about regular MTA commuting troubles, while others alleged that the senator hates all cops, despite having never mentioned the NYPD in comments focused on MTA priorities. There were comments that the MTA’s prioritization of service and this policing action have nothing to do with each other, but they are, in fact, closely related. MTA subways are private

property and they coordinate with the NYPD’s Transit Bureau on enforcement priorities. Gov. Cuomo plans to add 500 new transit police officers to the subways to combat quality-of-life issues. The cost of these additional officers will be $50 million per year at a time when crime statistics for the subways show levels that are falling and the system is in dire need of service investments that would benefit millions of riders. Many of the same people who dismiss concerns about the cost of these additional, unneeded officers also frequently bemoan how much money our government spends. Similarly, there seems to be a correlation between those who feel Elsa the churro vendor deserved being arrested and those who are offended if they receive a school zone speed camera citation in the mail,

complaining that it’s all just a money grab. Speed cameras are simply enforcing a law, and one that affects public safety, for that matter, with a $50 summons that is far less than what drivers receive from actual officers, which can run hundreds of dollars. Someone selling churros Someone selling churros is far less of a risk to public safety than a speeding driver.

is far less of a risk to public safety than a speeding driver. Public health concerns over unregulated food vendors are a consideration, but this raises questions about how to approach this matter in a reasonable manner that doesn’t clearly demonstrate unequal enforcement. What about kids selling candy for fundraisers or lemonade stands or bake sales?

in New York City. It’s true that there was very little on the ballot. Arguably, the five propositions should have garnered more attention inasmuch as they will have a substantial effect on city governance. If you looked at the proposals beforehand, they appeared very confusing as a result of many seemingly unrelated issues being combined. That could have been a turnoff. Then again, I do not believe there is ever an excuse for not voting. As Howie Rose is famous for saying at the conclusion of each Mets game, “Put it in the books.” The 2019 election is behind us. There is no doubt in my mind that turnout will not be an issue in 2020, but issues as well as character will be, in the literally thousands of major

elections that will be taking place across the nation. *** I heard Dr. Ben Carson speak at a New York State GOP event held last week at the Union League Club in Manhattan. Without going into detail, I would recommend, if you have an opportunity to hear him, take advantage. He is very inspiring. The housing secretary did not speak about housing nor did he give an overtly political talk. Instead, he related current events and issues to his own experiences. He has seen a great deal and done a great deal in his life. His medical, political and governmental careers are filled with notations that he was the first in so many areas. A life well lived is how I would sum up Dr. Carson.

MATTER OF FACT BY JAY BROWN

There are broader solutions to address some of these issues in systemic ways that can help prevent these occurrences from happening in the first place. New York City laws for street vendors have not changed since they were first implemented during the Koch administration. Though there are an estimated 12,000 street vendors currently, the city still only grants the same 4,000 street cart permits it did more than 30 years ago and the vast majority of those who hold the $200 two-year permits now sell them on the black market for as much as $25,000. There have been different pieces of legislation in the City Council the past

several years to address this in different ways, but each time the vocal opposition of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the Real Estate Board of New York, and chambers of commerce have seemingly derailed them. A currently pending bill would offer about 4,000 new permits over the course of a decade and require each holder be the person who operates the cart, thus eliminating the black market. A year ago, Los Angeles legalized street vending without any limit on the number of permits; however, there are various rules and restrictions to ensure public safety. Vendors must obtain business licenses and food permits, and maintain clean areas around their carts, while permits are only granted for locations that

do not impede pedestrian activity. Almost all New York City street vendors are struggling with artificially inflated permit costs or the perils of operating illegally, which can result in summonses, fines, confiscation of belongings and, apparently now, arrest. In a system in which a churro vendor could obtain a permit for a reasonable cost to sell her goods in a location that is permitted while meeting health code standards, not only would we avoid any rationale for the police needing to take away people like Elsa in cuffs, but we would enable hard-working people to come out of the shadows as the entrepreneurs they are attempting to be.

News From Your Neighborhood MTA SAYS IT HAS RESPONSIBILITY FOR WALL

FLATBUSH — MTA New York City Transit has written a letter to the city Department of Buildings saying that DOB should rescind notices of violation issued to several Brooklyn homeowners whose homes are next to the open cut that carries the Q and B trains through Flatbush. As the Eagle reported, DOB had issued notices of violation to these homeowners, saying that they were responsible for providing documentation that they have performed maintenance on the retaining walls between their homes and the subway right-of-way. In its letter, NYC Transit said that maintenance of the walls is the MTA’s responsibility and is done on a regular basis. 

CROWN HEIGHTS — Last Sunday, almost 500 Jewish Brooklynites, mainly Orthodox, held their annual Kosher Food Crawl, according to the Jewish Week. The crawl was organized by JMenu, an online ordering service for kosher food, and was a fundraiser for Toys for Hospitalized Children. Among the restaurant on the crawl were Gruit, a kosher beer garden; meat, a kosher steakhouse; Phomen, a kosher Vietnamese restaurant; and the Boozery, which served the group dairyfree chocolate and butterscotch desserts infused with alcohol. Ellen Koevary, a self-described “Jewish foodie” from the Upper West Side, told the Jewish Week, “I got tired of your standard roast beef deli sandwich.” 

PARK SLOPE — Police are seeking the public’s help in tracking down a man suspected of punching a traffic agent in Park Slope, according to the New York Post. The suspect punched the agent at 555 Fifth Ave. on Oct. 22 after he was issued a ticket for an expired meter, the Post reported. He told the agent to drop dead, then sped away in his 2008 Jeep Wrangler, police said. The agent had no visible injuries but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. 

Before her transformation, Beth works at a public relations firm in DUMBO, and her co-workers treat her like a second-class citizen, the Brooklyn Paper reports. But once she becomes Ishtar, the goddess of love, people bow down before her and offer her flowers. Much of the show was filmed in DUMBO and Bay Ridge. 

FROM CBD TO NYPD FOR HEMP EXECUTIVE

EAST NEW YORK — A Brooklyn man who was arrested in the 75th Precinct and charged with possessing 106 pounds of marijuana says his product was legal hemp that was being used to make CBD. Ronen Levy, who was still facing six drug possession charges on Thursday, said he had $30,000 worth of hemp. Police told NY1 News they were still looking into the case. “We got information about a large package of drugs. We got it in here. We field-tested it as marijuana and called the individual in, who was placed under arrest,” said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. Material on the web describes Levy as “chief strategy officer at Trait Biosciences, a cannabis biotech firm.” 

CAB DRIVER SUES CITY AFTER CONCRETE FALLS ON HIS CAR

PROSPECT EXPRESSWAY — A livery cab driver is suing the city over a piece of concrete that he said fell from the Prospect Expressway and hit his vehicle while passengers, including a baby, were in the back, according to CBSNewYork. The concrete crashed into Uber driver Mohammed Hossain’s vehicle on Seventh Avenue on June 23. “There was a 6-foot piece of concrete that fell down that struck the car at this angle,” said attorney Alex Omrani. FIRE SWEEPS THROUGH GREENPOINT WAREHOUSE

GREENPOINT — A three-alarm fire swept through a large warehouse on Van Dam Street in Greenpoint around 2:30 a.m. last Friday, according to ABC7. The warehouse housed a woodworking business. Firefighters had to battle the flames from outside after the roof began to sag, making the building unsafe, ABC7 reported. More than 130 firefighters and emergency medical technicians responded to the scene, and the FDNY began to have the fire under control within a few hours.

Homeowners united with housing advocates and local officials on the steps of Brooklyn Supreme Court this week to unveil a set of principles aimed at preserving affordable homeownership, including a measure that would tax any investor looking to make a quick buck on the borough’s booming real estate market. “The Homeowner Bill of Rights” was unveiled on Tuesday by the Coalition for Affordable Homes. It calls for state passage of legislation including the Small Home Anti-Speculation Tax — which imposes a 15 to 20 percent tax on property that is transferred to a new owner within two years of ownership. The revenue that is raised through this tax will then be used to finance affordable housing efforts through the state’s Homes and Community Renewal program. DETERIORATING CHURCH FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE

CROWN HEIGHTS — The future of a former movie palace on Nostrand Avenue and Eastern Parkway, which now houses a Seventh-day Adventist congregation known as the Philadelphia Church of Universal Brotherhood, is unclear, according to The New York Times. The need for repairs in the building’s ornate lobby is evident, but “the lack of funds has really kept us back, because we’re not rich,” D. Liendra Jeffries, the church’s senior pastor, told the Times. The theater, which was known as the Loew’s Cameo (later the Kameo), was built in 1924 in a neo-Egyptian style and served as a movie house until 1974, when it was sold to the church. Pieces of outdoor terra-cotta and other masonry have fallen off the building in recent years, making the church erect a sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians. Jeffries said the church has been besieged by offers from developers, but “we’re not going to sell.” Still, the building is not a landmark and can be demolished as of right. 

Gerritsen Beach Veterans Day Parade draws community applause The VFW Auxiliary Post 107 Color Guard marched in the parade. ebrooklynmedia/ Photos by Arthur De Gaeta

By Noah Singer INBrooklyn

Under clear blue skies on Monday, Nov. 11, residents flanked Whitney Avenue to honor community veterans for the annual Gerritsen Beach Veterans Day Parade. The event took place in the early afternoon along Whitney Avenue and ended at the Memorial Monument at Burnett Street, where supporters gathered for a ceremony. The parade was sponsored by Argonne Marine Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 107. “This is for the community. It’s to make sure the community keeps aware, teaches the young kids about what it means to be a veteran, and shows the respect and honor the veterans and the flag deserve,” said VFW Color Guard Capt. Gary Lewis. Marchers included VFW Auxiliary Post 107 members, local Boy Scouts, the VFW Post 107

Marching Band and the Knights of Columbus. The turnout was received enthusiastically by George Broadhead, a New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame honoree, who said of area residents, “Love them. It’s Gerritsen Beach; it’s a great community, great people.” The ceremony included a wreath-laying and gun salute by the members of VFW Post 107. VFW Auxiliary Post 107 President John Reilly spoke about the veterans’ sacrifices, and the crowd stood in silence as Jim Brandow and Gary Wasserman laid wreaths by the memorial. Many veterans, some decorated with war medals, proudly saluted the American flag that flew above the memorial site. The wreath laying was followed by Taps, played by bugler Jim Markson. Ceremony attendee Natasha Minze said, “It’s great that [the parade] brings the community together. Let us celebrate the veterans and remember this important day.”

Jim Markson played Taps at the ceremony.

Children, including Boy Scouts, walked in the parade.

Community activist Gloria Melnick dead at 79 BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM

Gloria Melnick, one of Bay Ridge’s most respected and revered community leaders, has died at 79. She was an unsung hero who remained an active part of the Bay Ridge community for decades. Melnick was a past president of the Bay Ridge Community Council and longtime executive secretary of the organization, and remained on the board of directors until recently. She was also very active in the BRCC’s Halloween art contest. Melnick also served as president of the Ragamuffin Children’s Parade and the Bay

Ridge Women’s Club. “I remember Gloria as always being pleasant and hardworking,” said former City Councilmember Vincent Gentile. “She was president of the Bay Ridge Community Council where I first worked with her. She so impressed me that when I became the city councilmember, I appointed her to join Community Board 10. I remember her being actively involved in our community downzoning efforts during the building boom in the early 2000s as well as other efforts. She loved and was loyal to Bay Ridge and we loved her. The effect of her work is still felt today.” Longtime friend and BRCC

member Jane Kelly echoed Gentile’s sentiments. “Gloria Melnick was a true Bay Ridgeite. She was involved in every aspect of activity in Bay Ridge. She will be sorely missed,” said Kelly. Throughout the years, Melnick chose to keep a low profile while being actively involved in many projects behind the scenes. She was a retired teacher with the Board of Education, and always worked toward the betterment of her neighborhood. CB 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann recalled Melnick’s tenure with the board. “On behalf of Community Board 10, I would like to extend my condolences to

Gloria Melnick’s family. She was a dedicated community member and volunteer who will be greatly missed.” Former State Sen. Marty Golden said that even though he didn’t always see eye to eye with Melnick, he always had great respect for her. “Gloria and I would debate about a number of different issues in our community,” he told this paper. “She was an activist, she worked hard, she was a teacher, she was a great community person and she will be missed,” Golden said. “She would be at all the community board meetings and all the different events over the years until recently. I’m sorry to see her gone. It is a great loss to our community.”

REAL ESTATE

Sometimes you need an urban adventure. How about a stroll beneath a highway? If it leads you through Red Hook, it’s totally worthwhile. There’s a gritty beauty to the underside of the BQE when you see it from Hamilton Avenue. Don’t worry. There’s a sidewalk, so this route is safely walkable. I’m heading to Columbia Street — which runs past leafy green parks and an urban farm that contrast with the highway system’s blacktop, concrete and steel. If you don’t live in transit-challenged Red Hook, the closest subway stop to the neighborhood is the F and G station at Smith and 9th streets. The station is a couple blocks from Hamilton Avenue.

A WALKWAY IN THE SKY The starting point on this stroll is the sidewalk on the Hamilton Avenue Bridge over the Gowanus Canal. The span was constructed in 1942 and is a “bascule bridge,” which is a type of drawbridge made of two parallel leaves for the northbound and southbound roadways. The toxic canal is a federal Superfund site. On its far shore, at 595 Smith St., you’ll see a single wall standing on a vast empty lot. This is a remnant of the historic S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse, which was constructed in 1886. Activists and elected officials fought to get the building landmarked. Its owner, the Chetrit Group, tore it down. Head up Hamilton Avenue in the direction of Court and Clinton streets. Some of the streets that run into Hamilton Avenue are lined with handsome rowhouses, for instance Nelson Street and Henry Street. Here and there, you’ll see businesses such as auto repair shops. I never realized it until I took this walk the other day, but the highway’s got a pedestrian overpass that connects Red Hook and Carroll Gardens. Its entrance ramp is located at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Luquer Street. When you’re scared of heights like some of us (meaning me), walking over a highway on a fenced-in path definitely qualifies as an adventure. In this case, the scenery was so interesting. You can see the top of the World Trade Center. And at the far end of the walkway, there’s a sunlit red-brick wall that’s the side of the Brooklyn New School on Henry Street.

There are lots of picturesque things to see on a walk along Hamilton Avenue and Columbia Street in Red Hook.

This is 5 Luquer St., which is in contract. After you double back on the overpass, Hamilton Avenue continues for a couple more blocks to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. This is the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, which was renamed to honor the governor who played a big role in rescuing New York from financial collapse in the 1970s. BTW, it’s North America’s longest continuous underwater tunnel, the MTA’s website says. There’s a sidewalk by the tunnel’s entrance at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Columbia Street. You can get a good view of the World Trade Center without straying into traffic.

LUNCH AND LOVELY ROWHOUSES After the highway scenery along Hamilton Avenue, the first block of Columbia Street rowhouses seems especially tranquil and charming. This block is a great place to linger if it’s warm enough for the outdoor seating at Camila’s Cafe (358 Columbia St.) on the corner of Seabring Street. Across the street, Jam’It Bistro (367 Columbia St.) serves Jamaican food. There’s lots of cool stuff to see at the next intersection. You’ll notice the cross street is Commerce Street on one side and Luquer Street on the other. The street grid is complicated

in this part of Red Hook. A mural on the facade of low-rise 22 Commerce St. is eyecatching. The trash bins in front of the building are painted to be part of the mural, which is a nice touch. An online posting says that Re:Gen:Cy is located in the building. It’s “a community and event space supporting sustainable development” by hosting educational programs, supporting small businesses and providing “a platform for regenerative projects to form.” On the corner of Luquer Street, at 379 Columbia St., there’s an Italian sandwich shop that has been in business since 1922. The shop, which is called Defonte’s, is known for its huge hero sandwiches. A bit further down the street, the bright-white painted brick facade of 5 Luquer St. caught my eye. Between the time that I took my walk and sat down to write this story, the New York Post mentioned this house in an article about five Brooklyn neighborhoods that are great places to live. The story noted that the house was for sale for an asking price of $1.65 million. A posting on listing broker Compass’s website says the house is in contract.

REAL ESTATE

Last winter, HUD appointed a federal monitor to make sure NYCHA corrects chronic problems at its properties.

A HUD FORECLOSURE

PARKS AND AN URBAN FARM

When you turn back onto Columbia Street, you’ll soon see it forms a traffic triangle with Dwight Street. The third leg of the triangle is called Nelson Street at the corner of Columbia Street and Delavan Street at the corner of Dwight Street. A portion of the street across from the triangle is blocked from vehicles with skinny bollards and painted with an aquatic mural. A big former industrial building at 5 Delavan St. is called the Monarch Luggage Factory Lofts. It photographs well when viewed from the corner of Dwight and Verona streets, too. On Columbia and Verona streets, there’s an apartment complex the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development foreclosed on in 2001, city Finance Department records show. Later that year, HUD sold a package of properties that included the complex to a private owner for $100,000. The deed specifies that all the apartments in the complex must be maintained as affordable-housing units for 25 years from the date it was signed. Past the corner of Verona Street, Columbia Street runs down the middle of the multi-block Red Hook Houses. HUD’s Regional Administrator Lynne Patton visited this New York City Housing Authority complex in August to hear residents’ complaints, the Brooklyn Eagle previously reported.

On the corner of Verona and Dwight streets, you’ll see eight-acre Coffey Park. It’s a leafy oasis. After Columbia Street crosses Lorraine Street, you’ll pass a huge vacant lot at 55 Bay St. A single-story, 95,787 squarefoot development is planned for the site. Past the intersection of Columbia and Bay streets, you find Red Hook Park. The running track looks newly refinished and is bright red. A fence surrounding Red Hook Soccer Field 3 in the middle of the track reminds you it’s off limits because the ground is contaminated with lead. A soil cleanup by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the city Parks Department is in the works. Across from Red Hook Park, an eye-catching new building at 556 Columbia St. houses a school called Basis Independent Brooklyn. It is on the corner of Sigourney Street. On the opposite corner of Sigourney Street there’s picturesque, productive Columbia Street Farm. Rows of leafy greens look ready to eat. There’s a composting site. The 2.75-acre urban farm at 560 Columbia St. was created in 2001 on the site of a concrete baseball field, its website says.

The Monarch Luggage Factory Lofts stand on the corner of Delavan and Dwight streets. The most eye-catching feature of the terminal is the 120foot-tall Red Hook Grain Terminal, which was built in 1922.

SEAGULLS AND A VIEW OF SUNSET PARK If you want to take a break, there are benches on the sidewalk where you can sit and listen to gulls’ cries. When you look north, Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn towers are arrayed on the horizon. When you start walking again, that’s Erie Basin on your right. Businesses such as VIP Fire Sprinklers Inc. are located there. Columbia Street curves. When you look out over the water, you’ll see Industry City down in Sunset Park. The building at the very end of Columbia Street is the NYPD’s Erie Basin vehicular evidence storage facility. You’ll have to turn around and retrace your steps to public transportation — city buses pick up passengers outside IKEA — or to get to Van Brunt Street for afternoon tea or happy-hour drinks.

Welcome to Coffey Park.

RIP TODD SHIPYARD

This is GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal.

IKEA is nearby at 1 Beard St. I didn’t go inside because I would have stayed for hours browsing through the housewares. Instead, I continued walking down Columbia Street to Erie Basin Park. IKEA was required to construct the 6.3-acre park after the City Planning Commission okayed the demolition of historic Todd Shipyard to make way for the construction of the Swedish furniture retailer’s megastore. The shipyard dated back to the 1860s. Gantry cranes that were salvaged from the shipyard are displayed in the park. They stand pretty far away from the Columbia Street side of the recreation area. You should walk to the other end of the park so you can take good photos of them. When you return to Columbia Street and head south again, the sidewalk runs right along the shoreline. A facility called GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal is there on your left. John Quadrozzi Jr. is the president of the terminal, where a wide range of industrial businesses such as scrap metal processors and fuel companies are located.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Nov. 12, 1938

ON NOV. 12, 1938, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Berlin (AP) — Jews today were assessed 1,000,000,000 marks ($400,000,000) as a penalty for the murder of Ernst vom Rath, German diplomat in Paris, it was announced officially. Field Marshal Hermann Wilhelm Goering, as director of Germany’s fouryear plan, issued a decree, effective next Jan. 1, prohibiting Jews from conducting retail businesses, mail order and commission houses and independent handicraft enterprises. Goering’s decree further banned Jews from heading any industrial or commercial concern by forbidding them to hold the position of ‘betriebsfuehrer,’ which every factory or similar undertaking must have under the national labor law. At the same time, semi-official sources said that 1,600 Jews had been arrested in Berlin alone. (The United Press estimated 6,000 Jews arrested in Berlin.) These sources said it was impossible to estimate how many other Jews had been seized in the rest of Germany since the killing of vom Rath, secretary of the German embassy in Paris, which incited nationwide burnings of synagogues and destruction of Jewish stores Thursday.”

When using a hammer, like a claw hammer, for home repair, never hit nails with the side or head of a hammer as the metal is not as hard as the metal of the striking face and could be damaged. If you get chewing gum stains on your clothing, place a newspaper (like the Brooklyn Eagle) over the top and give it a quick iron to save the day! Nothing is permanent! Even if your babies used a marker on the walls, toothpaste is a fine abrasive that will remove pretty much anything it touches!

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Nov. 15, 1940

ON NOV. 15, 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Dr. Booker T. Washington, leader of the negro race in America, and president of the Tuskegee Institute, at Tuskegee, Alabama, died yesterday from hardening of the arteries at his home, near the institute, only a few hours after arriving there from New York City, where he had been under treatment in St. Luke’s Hospital all last week … His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning from Tuskegee Institute, the school for negroes which he founded, and for which he worked with unflagging zeal during all of his active career … Dr. Washington was born a slave on the plantation of a family named Burrows, at Hale’s Ford, Virginia, probably in April, 1958. He did not know the exact date of his birth, for in those days records were seldom kept of the birth of slave children, and all he knew about it was what he could gather from hearsay in after years.”  ON NOV. 15, 1925, the Eagle reported, “The new Madison Square Garden, which is being constructed at 8th Ave. and 50th St., Manhattan, is rapidly nearing completion, and plans for the grand opening have been completed. The initial event will serve to reintroduce ice hockey to the New York public, after a lapse of some years, and will bring together the 1925 world’s champions, the Canadiens of Montreal, and the newly assembled team representing the New York Hockey Club, in an international match. This opening game will be held on Dec. 15 and will be a benefit for the Neurological Institute … The New York Hockey Club will be a member of the seven-club international league which will include representatives of Ottawa, which won the world’s championship in 1920, 1921 and 1923; Montreal, Toronto, the Canadiens of Montreal, who won the world’s championship in 1925; Boston and Pittsburgh.”  ON NOV. 15, 1940, the Eagle reported, “Coventry, England (U.P.) — Squadron after squadron of German airplanes divebombed this ancient industrial city for 10 1/2 hours in an attack which ended early today, leaving at least 1,000 casualties and wrecking the town as thoroughly as an earthquake. The survivors of the Nazi air fury today wandered through broken streets and row after row of houses and buildings shattered to matchwood and rubble by the explosion of thousands of bombs. The history of this present day industrial center of 167,000 population dates back to a medieval past brightened by the famous ride of Lady Godiva clad only in her golden hair. Coventry is 85 miles southwest of London.”  ON NOV. 15, 1950, the Eagle reported, “Tokyo (U.P.) — U.S. Marines reached the shores of the Chosin power reservoir — one of the great prizes of the North Korean campaign — yesterday, to find that its Chinese defenders had fled. But the Chinese were striking back hard in the west, forcing the South Korean 8th Division into a four-mile retreat. A motorized patrol of the Marine 7th Regiment, led by Regimental Comm. Col. Homer L. Litzenberg, Jr. of Philadelphia, reached the shores of the Chosin at 4 p.m. (2 a.m. Brooklyn time), and a half hour later troops began scrambling onto high ground commanding the southern tip of the artificial lake. ‘We’ve come a long way to look at this,’ said Litzenberg, pointing across the reservoir … The Chosin, supplying the bulk of North Korea’s hydroelectric power, had been defended bitterly by the Chinese, apparently to give them time to dismantle the power equipment. The Marines several days ago overran heavy crates of equipment the Chinese had not had time to remove.”

Hostfest brings a taste of Scandinavia to Bay Ridge BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM

all was in the air as the Scandinavian East Coast Museum held its annual Hostfest, or autumn festival on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge. Bay Ridge Conservancy and Scandinavian East Coast Museum President Victoria Hofmo said the event is a celebration of all things Scandinavian and helps introduce Scandinavian customs and culture to the community. “This event always has nice people and delicious food including Norwegian meatballs, mashed potatoes with gravy, mac and cheese and beet salad,” Hofmo told this paper. A community activist, Hofmo grew up in Bay Ridge and wants to preserve the

dessert. Another traditional thing to have is Norwegian cookies. Because it’s the season for hunting, we have a bow and arrow contest and we play pin the tail on the moose,” added Hofmo. Diana Hetteix won first place in the bow and arrow contest, hitting her target on the first try. She received a framed picture of an arts and crafts cat. The event also included a Scandinavian style lunch featuring a variety of Nordic fare and desserts. Solveig Simonsen McLoughlin explained the history behind a unique dessert that was offered.

Victoria Hofmo helps serve Norwegian meatballs and mashed potatoes. “It’s a Norwegian tradition around the holidays that we make Krumkake,” said McLoughlin. “It’s whipped cream with lingonberry, a popular tart type of Norwegian jelly that’s mixed in with the cream.” She explained that a lingonberry was very similar to a cranberry, but smaller and grown on a vine. In the afternoon, there was a Lapskaus auction featuring Thanksgiving-themed baskets and prizes, followed by entertainer Bob Carlsen, who was dressed in a dinosaur costume as part of his routine. Bethlehem Lutheran Church is located on the corner of Ovington and Fourth avenues.
