CB 7 votes to allow party boats to dock at Brooklyn Army Terminal with conditions

After months of community opposition, Community Board 7 voted at its May 15 meeting to allow excursion vessels, also known as party boats, to dock at Pier 4 at the Brooklyn Army

Terminal, though board members attached a variety of stipulations to their approval.

A total of 28 members voted in favor, while two members were opposed and one abstained.

The vote followed a meeting between the board’s Economic Development/Waterfront Committee and representatives of

the New York City Economic Development Corporation on May 1 at which EDC presented its new rules and regulations for excursion vessel activity at the pier.

It’s been choppy waters for the party boats seeking to dock in Sunset. Back in April, CB 7 was nearly unanimous in its opposition to giving a

liquor license to Sherryll Princess, which wanted to use Pier 4 as its home port.

“If Sheepshead Bay doesn’t want them, why would we want them?” asked board member Pat Ruiz at that time.

It was a good day to be a Viking.

The Scandinavian East Coast Museum (SECM) hosted its annual Viking Fest in Owl’s Head Park on Saturday, a day before the neighborhood’s storied Norwegian Day Parade.

This year’s celebration saw a significant spike in attendance, presumably due to last year’s poor weather.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. attendees were treated to cultural music and dance, contests, a scavenger hunt, Scandinavian arts and crafts and more.

SECM President Victoria Hofmo was thrilled with the turnout.

“It was fantastic. We had such a nice day and a really good turnout all day long,” she said, lending thanks to the event’s reenactors who “really go out of their way to do interactive things. One of my friends was telling me that they were letting the kids try on helmets, and they had a great time.”

This year’s Viking Fest saw returning celebrants and new attendees alike. A diverse collection of music was presented by Sean LeFleur, who served as the event’s DJ. Hofmo also gave credit to all who helped make this year’s Viking Fest possible.

BY PAULA KATINAS Fewer than 25 percent of the 472 subway stations in the New York City Transit system have elevators, ramps or other accommodations for the physically disabled, according to state Sen. Andrew Gounardes, who said he is introducing legislation to force the MTA to increase accessibility for riders.

Gounardes said his constituents are adversely impacted by the lack of accessibility.

“Currently, none of the stations in my district have an accessible entrance,” said the senator, who represents a sprawling district that covers a wide swath of Southwest

Brooklyn.

Gounardes is the Senate sponsor of a bill written by Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz that is working its way through the State Assembly that would establish clear targets for the MTA toward making the subway system fully accessible to people with disabilities and other mobility limitations.

The pair recently held a press conference with advocates for the disabled to announce the bill.

The proposed legislation also seeks to improve the MTA’s compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. “For decades, the MTA has renovated stations at a cost of

The board also voted to stipulate that all boats docking at the pier be required to seek its approval when going for a liquor license.

The MTA has invested nearly $5 billion to make subway stations accessible, according to agency officials.

The recently-approved congestion pricing plan, in which drivers will pay a toll to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street, “is a huge step forward,” Tarek said.

Under the congestion pricing plan approved by the state legislature, revenue generated by tolls will go to the MTA.

Take me out to the ballgame — just don’t make me wait.

Days after an initial postponement of a New York Yankees game against the Baltimore Orioles turned into a called game more than an hour after the original start time, Councilmember Justin Brannan wrote a letter to Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred voicing frustration with the current rainout policy and asking MLB to amend it.

“Currently, when MLB games are delayed due to inclement weather, fans in attendance are left waiting — sometimes for several hours without updates or options — to see if conditions will improve,” Brannan wrote. “A family with school-age kids attending a weekday evening game, for instance, may be forced to call it a night before the outcome of a rain delay is determined. When this happens, fans are put in the position of having to forfeit several hundred dollars or more after tickets, food, drinks and souvenirs without ever seeing a single at-bat. I’m sure that’s not the experience you want them to have.”

Both the Mets and Yankees have had extended rain delays and/or rainouts.

The game that inspired Brannan to write his letter was originally supposed to be played on May 13, but was postponed due to poor field conditions, after a protracted

wait.

“Tonight’s Yankees game vs the Orioles has been postponed due to unplayable field conditions,” the Yankees tweeted at 7:48 p.m., well after fans had taken their seats.

“It will be made up this Wednesday, May 15th, as part of a single-game admission doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. All Yankee Stadium Gates will open at 2:00 p.m. for the doubleheader.”

Although attendees could attend the double header or exchange their tickets for a future date this season, the late postponement announcement didn’t sit well with fans.

One person tweeted, “That should be in the next CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement), where they need to make a decision by a certain time.”

The Yankees also had a lengthy rain delay on March 31. A scheduled 1:05 p.m. start was delayed until 4:20 p.m.

Brannan thinks MLB should require that all games commence within an hour of the scheduled start time; he also thinks that rain delays should not last more than one hour to “prevent loyal fans from lingering endlessly.

“I really don’t want to legislate this; I want to start a conversation,” he told this paper in a statement. “I would like to see Major League Baseball do the right thing by their fans. America’s national pastime is also a billion-dollar industry. They can certainly afford it. I don’t think it’s a lot to ask.”

Man wanted for flashing young boys in Bay Ridge

around 1:30 p.m. on May 11, a 25-year-old woman was shopping at Costco on 37th Street between Second and Third Avenues when she realized that her wallet containing several credit cards was missing.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect had pocketed the wallet while in the store and later used one of her

cards to make various charges at a Home Depot near 19th Street and Hamilton Avenue.

Police describe the suspect as a black man around 30 to 40 years old. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a multicolored shirt and black pants.

OPEN DOOR POLICY: A 29-year-old man who left his wallet in his car, and left the car unlocked, had his credit card stolen from inside the vehicle while it was parked on 68th Street between Ridge Boulevard and Third Avenue. Cops say the card was later used to purchase around $76 worth of products at a pharmacy. No arrests have been made.

CROOK STEALS HIS WHEELS: A car parked on 82nd Street between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard was stolen on May 11. The car’s

owner, a 67-year-old man, told police that he was the only one who had keys to the vehicle. No arrests have been made.

TRESPASSER BUSTED: A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trespassing inside a building on 62nd Street between 13th and 14th Avenues on May 15 at around 11:10 p.m.

Cops say the victim, a 42-yearold man, was home when he got a call telling him that someone was inside his house. Both the victim and the witness allegedly saw the suspect in the house.

The victim told cops that the door wasn’t locked.

SUCKER PUNCHED: A

31-year-old man was punched in the head and put in a headlock by two men during a robbery at Bay 28th Street and 86th Street on May 16 at around 1:30 a.m. Cops say one of the perps grabbed the man from behind and attacked him while the other suspect stole his wallet which contained around $232. The crooks then fled southbound towards Bay Parkway. No arrests have been made.

DRIVE-BY ROBBERY: Two unknown crooks attacked and robbed a 23-year-man near West Sixth Street and 86th Street on May 16 at around 11:50 p.m. Cops say that the victim was walking home from a bar when the men got out of a gray Lexus Suburban and pushed him to the ground. They then looked through his pockets and stole $100 and a cellphone. The duo

went back into the car and fled northbound on West Fifth Street towards Avenue O. The victim believes he saw the suspects at the bar. No arrests have been made.

BUSTED FOR SWINGING BOTTLE: A 31-yearold man was arrested for allegedly striking a 29-yearold man in the neck with a beer bottle inside a restaurant near New Utrecht Avenue and Bay Ridge Avenue on May 19 at around 12:35 a.m.

Cops say that witnesses saw the attack, in which the victim sustained serious cuts to his neck.

SHOPPING SPREE: A woman shopping inside a store near Shore Parkway and Bay 38th Street had her wallet snatched on May 19 at around 2:50 p.m. The victim, 35, stated that she was shop-

CREEP THREATENS WOMAN ONLINE: A 24year-old woman who sent compromising photos of herself to a man she met online was blackmailed by him, according to the police. Cops say the victim, who lives near West First Street and Quentin Road, sent the man the pictures after speaking to him, because she thought she could trust him. Days later, he demanded $3,000 from her, telling her that if she didn’t pay up, he would post the photos online. No arrests have been made.

Famed poet and Brooklyn Eagle editor Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday is May 31.

Nationwide celebratory events have been underway for some time and will continue on the big day and long afterwards.

The Walt Whitman Initiative, a group that promotes the Bard of Brooklyn’s artistic legacy, has a list of birthday activities on its website.

Here’s my idea for a way to honor Whitman: Take a stroll through historic Fort Greene Park. It came into being in the late 1840s thanks to his advocacy.

Bring your copy of “Leaves of Grass” to read when you’re done walking up the hill to the iconic Prison Ship Martyrs Monument and around the park’s winding paths.

Read in the shade beneath the landmarked 33-acre park’s staggeringly beautiful trees. Or take a seat on a bench with a commemorative inscription that’s a paraphrase of a Whitman verse.

“We were together. I forget the rest,” it says.

The complete line, from a poem called “Once I Pass’d Through a Populous City,” is “Day by day and night by night we were together — all else has long been forgotten by me.”

about Whitman’s two-year campaign to get the city of Brooklyn to build the park.

In the campaign, which he started in March 1846, he argued that working-class families who then inhabited the area needed an oasis with greenery and fresh air for the sake of their health.

According to the LPC’s designation report, there was a big shantytown along Myrtle Avenue at that time. Whitman referred to shanty-dwelling Irish immigrants as “the Emeralders,” a reference to their homeland, the Emerald Isle.

South of the park, there were modest frame, brick and brownstone houses for workers.

Fancy brownstones and mansions were constructed years later, after the park’s opening.

RIP, BRAVE COLONIALS If you’re coming from another part of Brooklyn and need to get oriented, Fort Greene Park’s boundaries are Myrtle Avenue, St. Edwards Street, DeKalb Avenue and a street that’s called Washington Park — which was the recreation area’s original name.

Come see Walt Whitman’s park on his 200th birthday — Continued from page 10INB — Distinguished architectural firm McKim, Mead and White designed the monument.

It’s a 149-foot-tall Doric-style granite column topped by a 20-foot-tall bronze urn. Its construction was completed in 1908.

The hillside on which the monument stands has a crypt built into it for Colonial Americans who died while incarcerated on British ships during the Revolutionary War. Nearly 12,000 people perished aboard the floating prisons.

A.E. BYE’S WORK IS IN JEOPARDY Alongside the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, an epic granite staircase leads to lower-elevation parkland near St. Edwards Street. Stand on these stairs and look down for an excellent view of mounds made of Belgian blocks and grass-covered earth and flanked by rows of tall trees.

The mounds are a little peculiar — and utterly beautiful.

The modernist mounds were designed in the early 1970s by A.E. Bye, aka Arthur Edwin Bye. His 2001 New York Times obituary called the landscape architect “one of the foremost practitioners of his generation.”

A $10.5 million Parks Without Borders project calls for the mounds to be removed — along with 58 mature trees — and replaced with a flat, paved plaza to create a park entrance at the corner of St. Edwards Street and Myrtle Avenue.

An activist group called the Friends of Fort Greene Park is waging a legal battle against the Parks Department over its planned removal of the trees.

The only still-standing New York City house where Whitman lived is at 99 Ryerson St. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Coalition to Save Walt Whitman’s House, which is calling for city landmark designation for the property.

The coalition refers to 99 Ryerson St. as Leaves of Grass House because Whitman lived there when he published the first version of his poetry book.

Be sure to step out of the park when you get to the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park.

On a cobblestone park-entrance plaza you’ll find “Adorn Me,” a concrete and steel sculpture by artist Tanda Francis. It’s 14-plus feet tall.

The artwork consists of three monumental heads joined together. The faces are incised with thin vertical lines, which are a reference to the West African practice of scarification.

Francis said on her website that she made the sculpture “to speak directly to the African American community which often goes unrepresented in public art.”

She said she was inspired by 13th-century sculptures from Ife, which was a city-state located in what is now Nigeria.

The Art in the Parks program brought the mesmerizing statue to Fort Greene Park. Francis is one of 10 emerging artists who each received $10,000 grants from Japanese clothing company Uniqlo to complete works that are displayed for a year.

“Adorn Me” was installed last August.

‘LEAVES OF GRASS HOUSE’ IS NEARBY Fort Greene Park has room for tennis courts, basketball courts — and eye-catching blossoms. The day I took my Walt Whitmaninspired stroll, the dogwood trees were blooming.

By the way, if you’ve got some spare energy after your day in Whitman’s park, you should walk several blocks down Myrtle Avenue into Clinton Hill and turn onto Ryerson Street.

ongtime community activist Larry Morrish was honored this past Saturday with a wonderful street renaming ceremony appropriately outside the Fort Hamilton Parkway gate of Fort Hamilton Army Base.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that Larry has passed. I first met him when I worked for Assemblymember Florence Sullivan way back around 1982. Larry by then was already a well-established community personality, having been one of the founders and a very active member of BRAVO. I attended Larry and Phillipa Morrish’s wedding and reception; Marty Golden was his best man. Phillipa

is a truly gracious lady. I was happy to see her and pleased so many relatives and members of Larry’s extended family — the entire community — were able to turn out on what was a beautiful morning.

In recent years, I would see Larry and his little dog almost every morning in the spring, summer and fall sitting on a bench near Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue. You just did not say hi to Larry. There was always a conversation about something going on and certainly a few words about how each of us was doing.

Saturday for me and many others was a reminder of how much Larry is missed.

Of course, those who are in our memories are never really gone. “Larry Morrish Way” will keep Larry’s memory alive in a special manner. Of course, so will so many other things that happened or exist in the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights community because of Larry.

Georgia. All have passed extremely restrictive abortion bans recently. By the time this goes to print, Missouri’s governor may have signed another.

While similar laws in Iowa and North Dakota have been struck down, legislation like this has been introduced in 11 other states, including New York.

The Reproductive Health Act passed in Albany this January has, no doubt, motivated anti-choice lawmakers to propose bills they hope will cause the Supreme Court to rule against abortion protections or even Roe v. Wade. And while the RHA permits abortions after 24 weeks if the fetus cannot survive or if the mother’s life is at risk, anti-choice advocates have made the untrue claim it allows doctors to kill babies after they are born.

Whether it’s attacks on safeguards for reproductive rights or justification for draconian abortion bans, a common thread has been a foundation of false information.

Ohio’s law, for instance, would require life-threatening ectopic pregnancies to be re-implanted in the uterus. The problem with that is such a procedure is medically impossible.

In Georgia, where anyone who terminates a pregnancy could face the death penalty, the law could also mandate that those who have miscarriages must prove they occurred naturally.

As many as one in five known pregnancies ends in miscarriage. For those intending to carry to term, it is an extremely traumatic experience. Treating those who live through this as possible murder suspects would be a heinous miscarriage of justice.

Most of the states moving these bans forward rank among the worst in infant mortality, child poverty and education. They also have among the lowest female representation in their legislatures. Twenty-five white men voted to pass an Alabama law that affects women’s health, with statistics showing that the greatest impacts will be on women of color.

About 700 women die each year in the United States from complications during or after pregnancy, women of color three times more often than white women.

COMMON SENSE NYCHA buildings; •De Blasio being unfair to a million New York City public school students, referencing a billion spent on programs that have since been discontinued and on high-paid consultants; •De Blasio being unfair to 76,000 homeless residents by first denying the problem existed and then spending billions to address the issue without success; •De Blasio being unfair to the NYPD and other first responders by tying their hands and in the case of EMS members, starting their

salaries at an unusually low $30,000; •De Blasio being unfair to property owners by allowing property taxes to skyrocket 44 percent in five years; •De Blasio being unfair to all New Yorkers by allowing city spending to get out of control to fund a bunch of progressive programs that are not working.

Nicole concludes by suggesting that, if you are a resident of a primary state the mayor is visiting, you ask him “How are things going back in New York?”

One in 3,500 mothers who give birth dies from complications. If all abortions were to cease, at that rate, approximately another 200 women who had wished to end their pregnancies would die, most of them being women of color.

The details in each of these laws show them to be logically flawed. If the argument is that all abortion is murder, why do most make exceptions for rape or incest? Why do most create punishments for whoever performs an abortion, but not for women who receive one?

Why would Missouri sentence a doctor to 15 years in prison for terminating a pregnancy, when first

degree murder is punishable by the death penalty or life in prison?

If life begins at conception, why does Alabama’s law exempt in vitro fertilization? There are hundreds of thousands of frozen embryos in the U.S. and many are discarded every day. Why isn’t there a movement to save the lives of embryos created by mostly affluent, white couples?

Alabama State Sen. Clyde Chambliss said, “The egg in the lab doesn’t apply. It’s not in a woman."

That’s the point. It all ultimately comes down to controlling women. White men with false information and flawed logic should not be legislating what women can do with their bodies.

Creating laws that deny women rights and imply their worth is derived from their ability to give birth creates an entire gender of second-class citizens.

The CDC has shown that abortions are at their lowest level on record, occurring at about the same rate as before Roe v. Wade, which three-quarters of Americans support. Changing laws will not prevent abortions, nor is it what most Americans want.

It is obvious there will be different personal opinions on this issue, but the fact is, it is settled law, based on the concept that although we are all allowed our own views, they shall not be imposed on others so as to deny them their own rights.

Hundreds gather for Senior Living Health & Financial Expo

Scissura-led panel will find a way to save our treasured B’klyn Heights Promenade Moses pulverized part of Bay Ridge in his ego-driven effort to build Verrazzano Bridge

When Carlo Scissura, head of the New York Building Congress, was asked to head a blue-ribbon panel dealing with the costly and controversial reconstruction of the BQE — endangering the precious Brooklyn Heights Promenade — he had long and instructive experience observing the long-term harm that an ill-conceived massive public construction proposal can do.

His home (had he been a Bay Ridgeite at that time) could have been destroyed by the hamhanded machinations of “Master Builder” Robert Moses in a community that suffered through the destruction of 2,000 dwellings and the loss of almost 10,000 residents.

Moses literally decimated 15 percent of the Greater Bay Ridge economy by forcing through the mammoth Brooklyn approaches to his trophy span — the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, which officially opened to traffic in November 1964 but was even earlier the source of heartbreak and financial ruin for so many in this remarkably still stable community in southern Brooklyn.

Such massive disruptions carried out by profit-seeking developers and indifferent public agencies no longer rule the day as they did in Moses’ time.

A case in point: a plan put forth by Department of Transportation bureaucrats to eviscerate the landmark Brooklyn Heights Promenade to justify highway expansion and repair on the BQE that runs underneath.

Thanks in large part to the early and accurate reporting of this newspaper’s partner publications — most notably by Brooklyn Daily Eagle Community Editor Mary Frost

— an alarm was sounded that jolted the affluent and politically powerful Brooklyn Heights neighborhood to a high state of alert.

The scenic waterfront promenade, which sits astride the BQE, is more than a landmark and tourist attraction. It is the Heights’ key identifier and its disruption would do substantial emotional damage to nearby homeowners, shopkeepers and residents, threatening many years of dirt, debris, noise and worse in one of the city’s most picturesque areas.

After several headlines warning of the undue chaos that the planned desecration of the Heights Promenade would bring, transit and political authorities agreed — at the behest of Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon and others — to establish a blue-ribbon panel of respected business, civic and education leaders to come up with an alternate plan that would spare the Heights Promenade.

Demonstrating a degree of judgment seldom seen in such public crises, it was decided that the aforementioned Scissura would head the panel.

Prior to joining the New York Building Congress, Scissura was president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, where he combined his civic, legal and business expertise to help the Chamber became one of New York’s largest business advocacy and economic development organizations.

Membership grew by more than 200 percent to more than 2,200 members during his tenure.

Ridge’s Kathy Wylde a valued panel member

Adding her impressive experience to the panel is another Ridgeite — Kathy Wylde, who heads the prestigious Partnership for New York City, an association that is prominent politically with members among the city’s commercial elite.

Wylde arrived in Bay Ridge to aid the redevelopment of Lutheran Medical Center in the early 1970s when the damage wreaked by the bridge approaches was most painfully evident, especially on Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge, a shopping strip that lost thousands of shoppers and many millions of dollars in income thanks to Moses.

She’s a confidante of political power brokers. Mayor Bill de Blasio has granted her total and respected access to City Hall, and she is part of a respected “institutional government” that survives and functions under administrations of all political stripes.

The press, thanks to Frost and now many others, is doing its job, which is to protect the Heights Promenade so that it doesn’t fall victim to terribly poor planning.

Now it’s up to the panel and, given the unique skills of leaders like Scissura and Wylde and 13 others, we suggest they'll come up with a program that will preserve the vaunted promenade from progress of the worst possible kind, exemplified by Moses’ adulation of the automobile travel that he valued far above the meaning of true community.

P.S. It’s worth noting that Scissura and Wylde have each been honored as Bay Ridge Civic Pioneers by the Merchants of Third Avenue. The next Pioneers Reception is set for Oct. 28 at the Bay Ridge Manor, according to President Bob Howe, who reports that the 2019 Pioneers class will be announced shortly.

Fort Hamilton salutes the ships for 31st annual Fleet Week

As hundreds of people stood on Engeldrum Bluff to watch and wave at the sailors, soldiers from the fort fired an 11-gun salute in honor of the USS New York.

It’s the sixth ship of the US Navy to be named after the state of New York and is one of three warships named to honor 9/11 victims, alongside the USS Arlington and the USS Somerset.

n a season of parades, the grandest one may just be the parade of majestic ships that sailed into the Narrows ushering in Fleet Week. The seven-day event is designed to salute the country’s military service vessels and highlight the accomplishments of those who serve on them.

Service members and their families gathered with community leaders, teachers and schoolchildren at the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton, the only active military base in New York City, on Wednesday, May 22 to welcome the ships into New York Harbor.

Fleet Week, now in its 31st year, will last until May 28. The week includes dozens of family-oriented activities, including free tours of battleships.

Lieutenant Commander Sarah Brennan of the Coast Guard Sector of New York welcomed guests to the ceremony. She explained that there were more than 2,600 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members

Twelve vessels, including five U.S. Navy ships, three U.S. Coast Guard cutters, four U.S. Naval Academy Yard Patrol boats, one Military Sealift Command ship and two Royal Canadian Navy vessels sailed past Fort Hamilton and then traveled underneath the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge on their way up the harbor to dock at Manhattan piers for the week-long stay.

11. It is also the country’s largest fireboat.

The Motor Vessel Hayward, whose primary mission is debris removal in New York Harbor, followed behind the fireboat.

Next in line was the USS Milwaukee, the third freedom-class littoral combat ship and the fifth ship to be named in honor of the city of Milwaukee.

Following the Milwaukee was the USS Jason Dunham, named after Medal of Honor recipient and New York native Corporal Jason Dunham. The Coast Guard cutter Campbell was next before the flagship USS New York made her entrance.

Following the ceremony, the colors were presented by the Fort Hamilton High School JRROTC. In addition, guests were treated to performances by the Xaverian High School Band and the James Madison High School Band. Other schools attending the event were P.S./I.S. 229, P.S./I.S. 104, P.S. 264, I.S. 259 William McKinley, Holy Angels Catholic Academy and Fontbonne Hall Academy.

Fort Hamilton Army Base commanding officer Col. Andrew Zieseniss was delighted with the ceremony. “You couldn’t ask for a better day to watch the parade of ships in arguably the best location in New York City and to see them pass through here,” said Zieseniss.

“It’s also a fantastic opportunity for us to connect all our military services with the local community,” he went on. “It’s a terrific day and I look forward to the events over the next couple of days here in New York City.”

Joseph Raymond was a devoted husband, father, brother and mentor, and was respected throughout his community for his wisdom, generosity, kindness and moral character. He was a strong advocate for education and preached the importance of education to his children and younger family members. He was a graduate of Brooklyn College and the City College of New York where he earned his master’s degree. His long-time passion of giving back to the community led Joseph Raymond to establish JKMS, Inc., a non-profit charitable foundation, with a mission to provide aid to those in need in Haiti and elsewhere. He is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Soeurette Cyprien, his two sons, Karl-Raymond and his fiancée Anna Meg, and Matthew. He is also survived by his siblings Pierre and his wife Estella Brutus, Violette Cyprien, Marie-Ange and her husband Mones Casimir, Belinda and her husband, Etniel Aspelly, and Jean-Louis.

The sun shone as thousands of attendees filled Third Avenue in Bay Ridge for the 67th annual Norwegian Constitution Day Parade, which commemorates the signing of the Norwegian constitution on May 17, 1893.

The annual event, held this year on May 19, brought out a flotilla of festive floats, marchers in traditional outfits and bands aplenty. Participants lined up on Third Avenue, between 83rd and 84th streets, and headed down to Leif Ericson Park, where closing ceremonies took place.

Norwegian Parade Chair Arlene Rutuelo told this paper that everything went smoothly.

“It was very successful. It was a really good feeling

in the sense of it being a community event,” she said.

“The weather held up. We would’ve marched in the rain or snow but we were really blessed by the day we had.”

Both the crowd and the

number of civic groups that took part in the parade increased, according to Rutuelo.

“Last year, we had 11 civic groups,” she said. “We doubled the number this year and a lot of them were community groups and nonprofits that haven’t participated before. It was really a feel-good event and

there were at least a few extra thousand people on the streets.”

Rutuelo noted that having former State Sen. Marty Golden serve as the parade’s grand marshal added excitement to the day.
