A Mexican immigrant fighting President Donald Trump’s attempt to end a program shielding young immigrants from deportation says he is nervous about the case finally being heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Martín Batalla Vidal is a lead plaintiff in one of the cases to preserve the Obamaera program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and has seen his name splashed in legal documents since 2016, when he first sued in New York.

The 29-year-old certified nursing assistant at a rehabilitation clinic for traumatic brain injury in Queens has described the legal journey since then as stressful, with people sending him hateful messages. He has had to sacrifice days at work so he could go to protests, press conferences and meetings with attorneys.

Even with his worries, Batalla Vidal is hopeful immigrants like him will be able to stay in the country.

“I don’t know what is going to happen,” said Batalla Vidal, who lives with his mother, two brothers and a dog in an apartment at the border of Queens and Brooklyn. “Whatever the outcome is, we know that we have fought hard for it and we will continue fighting. I am trying to be positive.”

The nation’s highest court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on the case Tuesday.

The program protects about 700,000 people, often called “Dreamers,” who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children or came with families that overstayed visas.

With the attempted elimination of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, there was renewed pressure in Congress to pass the 2 • PHOENIX • Friday, November 15, 2019

DREAM Act, or Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, a series of never-passed proposals to protect young immigrants vulnerable to deportation. Opponents say the law rewards people for breaking the law, encourages illegal immigration and hurts American workers.

Trump ordered an end to DACA in 2017, but federal courts in different states, including New York because of Batalla Vidal’s lawsuit, blocked him from ending it immediately.

The protections remain in effect at least until the U.S. Supreme Court issues its decision, which will likely be in 2020. Participants of the program can renew their status, but no new applicants can sign up.

The Obama administration created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals in 2012 to provide Social Security numbers, work permits and protection from deportation to people who, in many cases, have no memory of any home other than the U.S. The Trump administration argues that the program is unlawful because former President Barack Obama did not have the authority to adopt it in the first place.

Batalla Vidal initially sued when a federal court in a separate case ruled that DACA permits could not be extended for a third year, as the Obama administration wanted. Now he’s part of the legal fight over the program’s very existence.

When Trump ordered the termination of the program, lawyers for Batalla Vidal amended his original lawsuit to fight the termination and added more individual plaintiffs.

A federal judge ruled in their favor. The U.S. Supreme Court in June agreed to hear the administration’s appeal of Batalla Vidal’s and other cases from around the country.

On Monday, Batalla Vidal arrived in Washington on a bus with his mother to join representatives from colleges, civil rights groups, Democratic-led states and individuals who also sued. On Tuesday, he sat at the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments.

“Nobody thought we would get this far,” he said after speaking last week in a conference at LaGuardia Community College, where he studies criminal justice as an undergraduate student. “I have my family, my community, which has had my back since day one.”

Batalla Vidal crossed the border with Mexico with his mother and a brother when he was 7 years old. He has two other brothers who are U.S. citizens.

After going to high school in Brooklyn, he said he worked making deliveries at a deli and later at a gym to save for college, and later on to support his single mother who has thyroid problems and osteoarthritis.

Batalla Vidal also joined Make the Road New York, a nonprofit group that defends immigrant rights. Lawyers from the organization, along with the Worker and Immigrant Rights Advocacy Clinic of Yale Law School and the National Immigration Law Center filed the 2016 lawsuit.

“His bravery and commitment to justice for our communities throughout this legal fight have been admirable and captured the attention of people all over, thousands of whom sent him messages of support after he received hate-filled messages for suing Trump,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. “Martín is fighting for the freedom to thrive and be himself in this country, which is his home.”

A New York commission is facing a deadline to come up with a $100 million plan to allow political candidates to fund their campaigns with public dollars.

The Public Campaign Financing Commission has until Dec. 1 to release its plan, which becomes law unless lawmakers return to Albany to overturn it.

Lawmakers budgeted $100 million for a system that would match candidates’ fundraising with taxpayer money in hopes of reducing the role of deep-pocketed donors and corporations who have long held sway in Albany.

In recent years, New York lawmakers and Cuomo have thrown contentious issues — from hiking legislator pay to taxing motorists who enter congested New York City areas — to similar commissions with broad authority over sweeping changes.

Nine commissioners are still hashing out how much candidates should have to raise and from how many small donors to qualify for public matching funds.

Commissioners planned to meet yesterday and maybe today to discuss and potentially vote on the proposals, which include a Democratic appointee’s suggestion to delay the program until 2022 and allow candidates to seek small donors from outside their districts.

But what the commission will ultimately decide — and how much the system could cost — is unknown, and the final report could differ from how commissioners have voted.

Commissioners drew criticism when they voted 5-4 on Oct. 22 to limit the public funding system to in-district contributions — a week after they voted to allow out-of-district contributions.

Voting rights group, including Fair Elections NY, argue rural candidates will struggle to compete against well-funded challengers who can seek donations without much restriction.

The Brennan Center for Justice, which has long supported public campaign financing in New York, said its research suggests the New York City public campaign funding system, which matches all eligible donations 6:1, has helped city districts across income levels.

Such groups oppose the State Board of Elections’ proposal to house an enforcement unit within that agency instead of creating an independent body to oversee candidates’ use of public tax dollars. Advocates caution commissioners must not propose a plan that doesn’t also lower New York’s high contribution limits for all candidates.

“It will allow the status quo in which organized interests and large contributions continue to have an unchecked influence in Albany,” said Janet Massaro, a committee chair with the League of Women Voters’ chapter in Buffalo and Niagara, at a recent commission hearing.

Commissioners have also faced scrutiny for proposals to make it harder for third-party candidates to get on the ballot. Such fights come as centrist Democrats are facing competition from progressive challengers who helped fuel electoral wins last year.

Commissioner Jay Jacobs, the chair of New York’s Democratic Party, has pushed to raise the number of votes needed to get on the ballot from 50,000 to 250,000. Jacobs is also a critic of a long-established practice known as fusion voting, which lets candidates appear on a ballot several times if they get endorsed by minor parties.

Jacobs has denied suggestions that his proposals mirror Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s political fights. Jacobs has said he will provide evidence that some minor parties encourage political corruption at a future meeting.

Cuomo, meanwhile, has scoffed at suggestions that he’s targeting the well-known minor party, the Working Families Party, for supporting his opponent in the 2018 Democratic primary.

Cuomo recently said legislative leaders should ensure appointees protect fusion voting, which he has claimed could raise the costs of a public financing system.

“They have a voice on the commission through appointees,” Cuomo said. “Or come back and vote.

That’s your power.”

Staffers upset after Council gives ‘slap on the wrist’ to member accused of harassment

When the City Council voted not to expel Andy King last week, only four of Brooklyn’s 13 councilmembers joined the minority chorus calling for the councilmember to be booted from the 51-person body.

In the days since the vote, numerous Brooklyn Council staffers have expressed disappointment with its outcome — though none were surprised.

“It’s offensive. It’s a slap in the face,” said one woman who works for a Brooklyn councilmember. “Morally, everyone should have voted Councilmember King out.” She, along with the other staffers quoted in this article, were provided anonymity to speak freely on the subject.

King received a 30-day suspension from the Council following substantiated allegations against him of retaliation, disorderly conduct, conflicts of interest and harassment of staff.

The vote on King’s suspension — called for

by Queens Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer — came as an amendment to the punishment handed down by the Council’s Ethics Committee.

On top of the suspension, the Bronx councilmember was fined $15,000 and now has an independent monitor watching over his office — but the vote to expel him failed. Thirty-four councilmembers voted against, and only 12 voted in favor. Brooklyn Councilmember Matthieu Eugene abstained.

Last week, 93 current and 39 former council staffers signed onto a letter calling for changes to how the Council handles allegations of councilmember mistreatment of staff.

“I was extremely disappointed and frustrated and I think to watch a political process play out over something that, to me, was about how we show we value employees and stand up for staff’s rights was incredibly disheartening and upsetting,” said another woman who works for a Brooklyn councilmember who voted against expulsion.

The 12 councilmembers who voted for expulsion included Brooklyn’s Mark Treyger, Carlos Menchaca, Rafael Espinal and Antonio Reynoso.

Brooklyn Councilmembers Alicka Ampry-Samuel, Inez Barron, Justin Brannan, Robert Cornegy, Chaim Deutsch, Brad Lander, Stephen Levin, Farah Louis, Kalman Yeger and Laurie Cumbo all voted against.

“We are nothing without staff. I am nothing without my staff,” said Treyger, explaining to the Phoenix why he voted in support of expulsion. “I felt compelled to act and to vote for expulsion based on the totality of multiple offenses cited in the report. The harassment, the retaliation and the fact that there was no recognition and no remorse: it was very chilling.”

King, who is black, called the ethics inquiry into his actions a “campaign… to lynch me,” according to the New York Daily News.

When given a chance to speak ahead of the vote, he did not apologize.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who called on King to resign but voted against the amendment to expel him, said that he was afraid expulsion could set a dangerous precedent and would go against the wishes of the voters.

“One of the things we have in a democracy is voters get to decide who their elected officials are. We may not agree with that decision all the time, but that is what the voters get to decide. And Councilmember King has been elected three times by the voters of his district,” said Johnson at a press conference.

The penalty given to King was the harshest the Council has ever given out. The Council also hired Redwood Enterprise this year to ad-dress the legislative body’s sexual harassment policies, which it is currently auditing, accord-ing to a Council spokesperson.

were disappointed that councilmembers accused of mistreating or sexually harassing women are not disciplined more harshly — and that so few women in the Council voted to boot King.

“I think he should have been expelled. I think there’s always just been a slap on the wrist when it comes to these kinds of issues,” said another female staffer for a Brooklyn councilmember.

“The way Councilmember [Barry] Grodenchik was treated — how that was mishandled didn’t make me think Andy King was going to be treated any differently.”

Grodenchik admitted in May to paying inap-

propriate attention to a female staffer, including giving her unwanted hugs and kisses, and making comments about her weight. This came after he initially denied the woman’s claims.

He stepped down from his post as Parks and Recreation Committee chair.

The same staffer said that inappropriate behavior in the workplace extends beyond councilmembers.

“I think a lot of female staff have a really cynical view. It’s not just councilmembers who are creepy, it’s lobbyists, too. It’s a really patriarchal work environment that’s not always the

most comfortable,” the staffer said.

She called it “hugely disappointing” that more women did not vote for expulsion. “It just shows that identity politics only goes so far and it’s not enough to just elect more women. We need to elect people who fight for gender equity.”

Of the ZCouncil’s 51 members, only 12 are women. Manhattan’s Helen Rosenthal was the only one that supported the expulsion.

One former staffer to a Brooklyn councilmember said she was harassed while working for the body, but that her boss swiftly took care of it. “He handled things pretty much the way you would pray and hope a supervisor would,” the staffer said. “The particular issue happened on a Friday, and by Monday there were certain things put in place for it to never happen again.”

The former staffer said she thought King should have been expelled. “There were definitely certain things I thought were harsher than I’ve seen the Council do in the past, but I don’t think they went far enough,” she said of the punishment.

“Who would want to work in that kind of environment? If the Council’s goal is to discourage women from pursuing careers in government, they’re doing a great job,” said Cat Almonte, managing director of the Broad Room, a New York City activist organization that advocates for women. “[The] vote sends a clear message that abusers and harassers will be treated with kid gloves.”

One male staffer who works for a Brooklyn councilmember who voted against expulsion said he thought King would resign before the vote — and added that he wished more councilmembers had voted in favor of expulsion.

“I do think more people should have voted in favor of [expulsion],” he said. “I bet [women staffers] feel incredibly disappointed. There’s no way you can do this work without your fellow coworkers feeling safe and like they have an ally.”

Matchbox Cars, coloring book, Magic make Toy Hall of Fame The Associated Press

Matchbox Cars, the coloring book and the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering were inducted Thursday into the National Toy Hall of Fame, recognized for an enduring appeal that keeps them on store shelves today.

A panel of experts selected the Class of 2019 from among nominated finalists that also included Care Bears, the Fisher-Price Corn Popper, Jenga, Masters of the Universe, My Little Pony, Nerf Blaster, Risk, the smartphone and the top.

The honorees were installed during a ceremony at the hall, located inside the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester. They will be permanently showcased alongside 68 previous winners that include alphabet blocks, the Big Wheel, G.I. Joe and others recognized for their innovation, longevity and ability to foster creativity or discovery through play.

Matchbox Cars follow rival Hot Wheels, Class of 2011, into the hall. Lesney Products debuted Matchbox Cars in England in 1953 and in United States a year later, where they were selling at a rate of more 100 million a year by 1960, the hall said.

When the sporty Hot Wheels entered the market in 1968, Matchbox Cars responded with a “superfast” line of its own. Both brands are now owned by Mattel.

Wizards of the Coast introduced Magic: The Gathering in 1993 and quickly had trouble meeting demand, the hall said. A book series, electronic games and Netflix series have followed. The fantasy game employs chance and skill as players continuously collect new cards and refine their deck and strategies.

“The fact that it continues to maintain popularity is a testament to its revolutionary gameplay and constant evolution, making it

engaging for beginners and experts alike,” curator Shannon Symonds said.

The New York printing company McLoughlin Brothers gets credit for producing the first coloring books in the 1880s. In recent years, the activity’s appeal has crossed over to adults as a way to reduce stress and boost creativity.

Anyone can nominate a toy using an online form, but to make it into the hall, toys must have lasted across generations, be innovative, and foster learning, creativity or discovery through play.

The winners are chosen on the advice of historians, educators and others whose lives or careers are focused on learning, creativity and discovery, according to the hall.

I spent the night at ‘The Deplorables,’ a pro-Trump charity gala in NYC

Outspoken supporters of Donald Trump are rare in New York City. But on Wednesday night, more than 150 of them gathered together to enjoy each other’s company and support the president.

The occasion: “The Deplorables,” a Broadway charity benefit complete with music, comedy, dinner, drinks, American flags and relentless patriotism.

Attendees lined up on the sidewalk outside the Secret Room venue, which has no identifying signage, and preshow security was tight. A tall bouncer with a neck tattoo (“Living the Warrior Life”) triple-checked guests’ credentials. Some passersby asked people what show they were lined up for. Their answers were vague.

The guests, many of whom learned about the event while watching Fox television, spoke amongst themselves about the experience of supporting Trump while living in New York.

“If you go to Texas and you’re a Democrat, do you get abused? Do you get kicked out of restaurants? Do you get beat up? No! It’s so one-way,” one man said.

“New York State is anti-gun,” another man said. “So, if you own a store here, they can rob you. Cops won’t show up, and you don’t have a gun to defend yourself.”

Inside the Secret Room, video monitors played an endless loop show-

casing blonde girls singing “Trust in God but vote Republican,” alongside crowds cheering at what looked like a presidential inauguration. The video also showed scenes depicting military heroism and, in one photo, President Trump’s head superimposed on an astronaut’s body.

In starring roles at the four-hour extravaganza were singer-actor Robert Davi, comedian Steve “Mudflap” McGrew and headliner Terrence Williams, billed by the event as the “president’s favorite comedian.”

The crowd buzzed as Jeanine Pirro, host of Fox News Channel’s “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” made her way to a table. Waitresses wove through the crowd with shrimp cocktail and fried chicken cutlet appetizers.

The Deplorable Cocktail list included the Bye Bye Blasio (“Buy this for the privilege of paying 65 percent city tax”); The Beto (“Mexican drink but not really”); the Biden Brainbanger (“Drink this and you won’t remember anything ever again”) and Bernie on the Rocker. (“You don’t pay for it. Find the richest guy and he’ll pay.”)

Julio Gonzalez, chairperson and chief executive of Engineered Tax Services, which specializes in the preservation of wealth, told the audience the idea was “to bring comedy and music to people across America who were forgotten.”

Jill Mazur, who grew up in New York and now lives in Houston, Texas, said she was invited to the event by Gonzalez of Engineered Tax Services, “who put all this together.”

“No matter where you are, the conservative voice gets muffled because the liberals can be so loud,” Mazur said. “And I think they forget that just because they can’t hear you doesn’t mean you’re not there.”

Michael Rosenblatt, from Long Island, said he was invited by Mazur.

A big supporter of Trump, Rosenblatt feels his voice has been left out, “very much so.”

A man who refused to give his name (but who hinted he had traveled to New York City from “a place where politics resides”), said he wanted people in New York City to know, “What you hear on the news is not even close to the truth. And we know it for a fact.”

The man he was with refused to speak to this reporter. “I only talk to conservative Republicans,” he said.

Becky, from Charlotte but in town for an investment conference, said that at the event, “We can be cheerful about a growing economy and not have somebody look at us like we’ve got a cesspool on our face or something.”

Real estate and law consultant Jill Quentzel Winston, a Jersey girl who has lived in New York, spoke about the quid pro quo issue.

“You cannot look at the situation we have here and say that Biden’s corrupt intent is less important than Trump’s positive intent. He had an intent of investigating corruption.

Biden had an intent of being corrupt and then hiding that corruption,” she said.

Nina, who lives in Great Neck, was born in Iran. She said her experiences becoming an American citizen led to her supporting Trump.

“I’m Jewish, and after the Revolution we were basically kicked out. We had to escape from Iran literally on

foot. We hired a coyote to take us into Pakistan.

“I just don’t want this country to become a place where you can’t talk and can’t celebrate who you vote for,” she said. At “The Deplorables” event, she said she felt she could “finally be around people who are like-minded, who celebrate freedom, who celebrate open-mindedness.”

Nina’s husband is from Brooklyn, but declined to comment for this article.

New York City Instagram personality “King Face” was wearing a blue MAGA hat. “It matches the outfit,” he said. He described himself as “a viral political star. … I’m just a proud American who wants to support his country.

“The most important thing to know is that you can do whatever you want to do in this country. You have nothing holding you back,” King Face said.

“Especially as African American, we had that mentality, we think things are against us. But Donald Trump is not about black or white, he’s about America first. And that’s what I love about him.”

Jojo, from Manhattan, said she is active in the Conservative and Republican parties.

“I didn’t think we had the best and the brightest with the best intentions in Washington, D.C. We had way too many lifelong politicians … I’m a fan of put your head down, go to work and be a servant for this country,” she said.

“In 2016, the best that the Democrats could come up with is Hillary Clinton,” Jojo added. “We’re going into the 2020 elections, and there is no frontrunner.”

Trump “is not polished in some ways,” Jojo admits, but “I think his intentions are much better than what comes across.”

Profits from the show — tickets were $250 — benefited the Folded Flag Foundation and the Federal Enforcement Homeland Security Foundation.

News From Your Neighborhood MTA SAYS IT HAS RESPONSIBILITY FOR WALL

FLATBUSH — MTA New York City Transit has written a letter to the city Department of Buildings saying that DOB should rescind notices of violation issued to several Brooklyn homeowners whose homes are next to the open cut that carries the Q and B trains through Flatbush. As the Eagle reported, DOB had issued notices of violation to these homeowners, saying that they were responsible for providing documentation that they have performed maintenance on the retaining walls between their homes and the subway right-of-way. In its letter, NYC Transit said that maintenance of the walls is the MTA’s responsibility and is done on a regular basis. 

CROWN HEIGHTS KOSHER FOOD CRAWL ATTACTS 500

CROWN HEIGHTS — Last Sunday, almost 500 Jewish Brooklynites, mainly Orthodox, held their annual Kosher Food Crawl, according to the Jewish Week. The crawl was organized by JMenu, an online ordering service for kosher food, and was a fundraiser for Toys for Hospitalized Children. Among the restaurant on the crawl were Gruit, a kosher beer garden; meat, a kosher steakhouse; Phomen, a kosher Vietnamese restaurant; and the Boozery, which served the group dairyfree chocolate and butterscotch desserts infused with alcohol.

Ellen Koevary, a self-described “Jewish foodie” from the Upper West Side, told the Jewish Week, “I got tired of your standard roast beef deli sandwich.” 

COPS SEEK MAN WHO PUNCHED TRAFFIC AGENT

PARK SLOPE — Police are seeking the public’s help in tracking down a man suspected of punching a traffic agent in Park Slope, according to the New York Post. The suspect punched the agent at 555 Fifth Ave. on Oct. 22 after he was issued a ticket for an expired meter, the Post reported. He told the agent to drop dead, then sped away in his 2008 Jeep Wrangler, police said. The agent had no visible injuries but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. 

DUMBO — A new five-part YouTube series produced by the Brooklyn arts organization BRIC follows a depressed Brooklyn woman who is transformed into a Babylonian goddess, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Before her transformation, Beth works at a public relations firm in DUMBO, and her co-workers treat her like a second-class citizen, the Brooklyn Paper reports. But once she becomes Ishtar, the goddess of love, people bow down before her and offer her flowers. Much of the show was filmed in DUMBO and Bay Ridge. 

EAST NEW YORK — A Brooklyn man who was arrested in the 75th Precinct and charged with possessing 106 pounds of marijuana says his product was legal hemp that was being used to make CBD. Ronen Levy, who was still facing six drug possession charges on Thursday, said he had $30,000 worth of hemp. Police told NY1 News they were still looking into the case. “We got information about a large package of drugs. We got it in here. We field-tested it as marijuana and called the individual in, who was placed under arrest,” said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. Material on the web describes Levy as “chief strategy officer at Trait Biosciences, a cannabis biotech firm.” 

CAB DRIVER SUES CITY AFTER CONCRETE FALLS ON HIS CAR

PROSPECT EXPRESSWAY — A livery cab driver is suing the city over a piece of concrete that he said fell from the Prospect Expressway and hit his vehicle while passengers, including a baby, were in the back, according to CBSNewYork. The concrete crashed into Uber driver Mohammed Hossain’s vehicle on Seventh Avenue on June 23. “There was a 6-foot piece of concrete that fell down that struck the car at this angle,” said attorney Alex Omrani. Hossain move to America from Bangladesh 12 years ago and said he thinks highways are better in his native country than in New York City, CBSNewYork reported. 

FIRE SWEEPS THROUGH GREENPOINT WAREHOUSE

GREENPOINT — A three-alarm fire swept through a large warehouse on Van Dam Street in Greenpoint around 2:30 a.m. last Friday, according to ABC7. The warehouse housed a woodworking business. Firefighters had to battle the flames from outside after the roof began to sag, making the building unsafe, ABC7 reported. More than 130 firefighters and emergency medical technicians responded to the scene, and the FDNY began to have the fire under control within a few hours.

Homeowners united with housing advocates and local officials on the steps of Brooklyn Supreme Court this week to unveil a set of principles aimed at preserving affordable homeownership, including a measure that would tax any investor looking to make a quick buck on the borough’s booming real estate market. “The Homeowner Bill of Rights” was unveiled on Tuesday by the Coalition for Affordable Homes. It calls for state passage of legislation including the Small Home Anti-Speculation Tax — which imposes a 15 to 20 percent tax on property that is transferred to a new owner within two years of ownership. The revenue that is raised through this tax will then be used to finance affordable housing efforts through the state’s Homes and Community Renewal program.

FLATLANDS — Bumper cars on ice made their debut last Friday at Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field, just in time for the holiday season, according to amNewYork. These flying saucer-shaped cars are the first of their kind in the city, Aviator said. The cars have four-wheel drive and feature a dual steering system that can go in any direction. 

BEER AND BURLESQUE AT THE BROOKYN BREWERY

WILLIAMSBURG — The Love Show’s “Brooklyn Beerlesque,” described as “the world’s only beer and burlesque pairing,” comes to the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg on the second Monday of every month, according to Patch. The event serves a selection of Brooklyn Brewery’s famous craft beers accompanied by performances by such performance artists as Apathy Angel, Cassandra Rosebeetle, Pearls Daily and comedian Zero Boy. This extravaganza will be presided over by “certified beer server” David Slone, who is also an attorney, Patch said. 

DETERIORATING CHURCH FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE

CROWN HEIGHTS — The future of a former movie palace on Nostrand Avenue and Eastern Parkway, which now houses a Seventh-day Adventist congregation known as the Philadelphia Church of Universal Brotherhood, is unclear, according to The New York Times. The need for repairs in the building’s ornate lobby is evident, but “the lack of funds has really kept us back, because we’re not rich,” D. Liendra Jeffries, the church’s senior pastor, told the Times. The theater, which was known as the Loew’s Cameo (later the Kameo), was built in 1924 in a neo-Egyptian style and served as a movie house until 1974, when it was sold to the church. Pieces of outdoor terra-cotta and other masonry have fallen off the building in recent years, making the church erect a sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians. Jeffries said the church has been besieged by offers from developers, but “we’re not going to sell.” Still, the building is not a landmark and can be demolished as of right. 

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — An exclusive private school will be moving into 10 stories of a new development above Macy’s in Downtown Brooklyn, according to the Daily News. The school, Whittle School and Studios, will be located at 181 Livingston St. and open in fall 2020, the Daily News said. This will be the third in a chain of for-profit, high-end private schools sponsored by educational entrepreneur Chris Whittle. Whittle, a former publisher of Esquire magazine, hopes to open more than 30 of his schools, which focus on global studies, across the world. Larry Weiss, former head of school at Brooklyn Friends School, will lead the new school.



PERSAUD HOSTS DISCUSSION ON YOUTH VIOLENCE

BROWNSVILLE — State Sen. Roxanne Persaud (D-East New York-Brownsville-Sheepshead Bay), chair of the New York State Senate Social Services Committee, recently hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Examining the Prevalence of Youth Violence.” The discussion began with Persaud and her colleagues speaking directly with high school-aged youth about experiences with, or perspectives on, the pervasive culture of violence. Then, Persaud and colleagues continued the discussion with youth development advocates, youth service providers, anti-violence organizations and other. The discussion took place at the Spring Creek Educational Campus. 

PARK SLOPE PIZZERIA COOK SAYS HE WAS FIRED AFTER STROKE

PARK SLOPE — A cook at Princess Pizza on the corner of 14th Street and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope was underpaid for more than a decade and then fired after he had a stroke at work, a new lawsuit claims. The suit claims Manuel Yunganaula worked as many as 86 hours a week while getting minimum wage or less with no overtime pay, Patch reported. In May, he had a stroke, had trouble speaking and started doing “strange things” at work., the lawsuit said His bosses, told Yunganaula to go home and assured him that his job would be waiting for him when he recovered, but when he eturned, he found another cook had been hired, the lawsuit said. 

FIRE AT PINK HOUSES IS CONSIDERED SUSPICIOUS

EAST NEW YORK — A fire that erupted last Thursday inside an apartment at NYCHA’s Pink Houses in East New York is being investigated as suspicious, according to amNewYork. Anna and Dorilo Gonzalez, a couple who originally came here from the Dominican Republic, were rescued by firefighters after being trapped in their home, said amNewYork. Neither was seriously hurt, but investigators are now looking for the couple’s next-door neighbor as a potential suspect, FDNY sources said. He reportedly had made threats against the couple and had one on anti-Hispanic rants during the past month. 

FLATLANDS — Brooklyn Public Library’s Flatlands branch at Flatbush Avenue near Baughman Place has reopened after a three-month closure, according to the Brooklyn Paper. The branch closed on Aug. 3 so that a new conference room could be built. The space is now available for lectures or group activities, the Brooklyn Paper said.

Under clear blue skies on Monday, Nov. 11, residents flanked Whitney Avenue to honor community veterans for the annual Gerritsen Beach Veterans Day Parade.

The event took place in the early afternoon along Whitney Avenue and ended at the Memorial Monument at Burnett Street, where supporters gathered for a ceremony.

The parade was sponsored by Argonne Marine Park Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 107.

“This is for the community. It’s to make sure the community keeps aware, teaches the young kids about what it means to be a veteran, and shows the respect and honor the veterans and the flag deserve,” said VFW Color Guard Capt.

Marchers included VFW Auxiliary Post 107 members, local Boy Scouts, the VFW Post 107

Marching Band and the Knights of Columbus.

The turnout was received enthusiastically

by George Broadhead, a New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame honoree, who said of area residents, “Love them. It’s Gerritsen Beach; it’s a great community, great people.”

The ceremony included a wreath-laying and gun salute by the members of VFW Post 107.

VFW Auxiliary Post 107 President John Reilly spoke about the veterans’ sacrifices, and the crowd stood in silence as Jim Brandow and Gary Wasserman laid wreaths by the memorial.

Many veterans, some decorated with war medals, proudly saluted the American flag that flew above the memorial site.

The wreath laying was followed by Taps, played by bugler Jim Markson.

Ceremony attendee Natasha Minze said, “It’s great that [the parade] brings the community together. Let us celebrate the veterans and remember this important day.”

MINIERO, Dominick — A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, passed away on Friday Nov. 8, at New York Community Hospital of Brooklyn. Dominick

Community activist Gloria Melnick dead at 79

Gloria Melnick, one of Bay Ridge’s most respected and revered community leaders, has died at 79. She was an unsung hero who remained an active part of the Bay Ridge community for decades.

Melnick was a past president of the Bay Ridge Community Council and longtime executive secretary of the organization, and remained on the board of directors until recently. She was also very active in the BRCC’s Halloween art contest. Melnick also served as president of the Ragamuffin Children’s Parade and the Bay

Ridge Women’s Club.

“I remember Gloria as always being pleasant and hardworking,” said former City Councilmember Vincent Gentile.

“She was president of the Bay Ridge Community Council where I first worked with her.

She so impressed me that when I became the city councilmember, I appointed her to join Community Board 10. I remember her being actively involved in our community downzoning efforts during the building boom in the early 2000s as well as other efforts. She loved and was loyal to Bay Ridge and we loved her.

The effect of her work is still felt today.”

Longtime friend and BRCC

member Jane Kelly echoed Gentile’s sentiments.

“Gloria Melnick was a true Bay Ridgeite. She was involved in every aspect of activity in Bay Ridge. She will be sorely missed,” said Kelly.

Throughout the years, Melnick chose to keep a low profile while being actively involved in many projects behind the scenes. She was a retired teacher with the Board of Education, and always worked toward the betterment of her neighborhood.

CB 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann recalled Melnick’s tenure with the board. “On behalf of Community Board 10, I would like to extend my condolences to

Gloria Melnick’s family. She was a dedicated community member and volunteer who will be greatly missed.”

Former State Sen. Marty Golden said that even though he didn’t always see eye to eye with Melnick, he always had great respect for her. “Gloria and I would debate about a number of different issues in our community,” he told this paper.

“She was an activist, she worked hard, she was a teacher, she was a great community person and she will be missed,” Golden said. “She would be at all the community board meetings and all the different events over the years until recently.

I’m sorry to see her gone. It is a great loss to our community.”

Sometimes you need an urban adventure. How about a stroll beneath a highway?

If it leads you through Red Hook, it’s totally worthwhile.

There’s a gritty beauty to the underside of the BQE when you see it from Hamilton Avenue.

Don’t worry. There’s a sidewalk, so this route is safely walkable. I’m heading to Columbia Street — which runs past leafy green parks and an urban farm that contrast with the highway system’s blacktop, concrete and steel.

If you don’t live in transit-challenged Red Hook, the closest subway stop to the neighborhood is the F and G station at Smith and 9th streets. The station is a couple blocks from Hamilton Avenue.

A WALKWAY IN THE SKY The starting point on this stroll is the sidewalk on the Hamilton Avenue Bridge over the Gowanus Canal.

The span was constructed in 1942 and is a “bascule bridge,” which is a type of drawbridge made of two parallel leaves for the northbound and southbound roadways. The toxic canal is a federal Superfund site.

On its far shore, at 595 Smith St., you’ll see a single wall standing on a vast empty lot. This is a remnant of the historic S.W. Bowne Grain Storehouse, which was constructed in 1886.

Activists and elected officials fought to get the building landmarked. Its owner, the Chetrit Group, tore it down.

Head up Hamilton Avenue in the direction of Court and Clinton streets.

Some of the streets that run into Hamilton Avenue are lined with handsome rowhouses, for instance Nelson Street and Henry Street. Here and there, you’ll see businesses such as auto repair shops.

I never realized it until I took this walk the other day, but the highway’s got a pedestrian overpass that connects Red Hook and Carroll Gardens. Its entrance ramp is located at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Luquer Street.

When you’re scared of heights like some of us (meaning me), walking over a highway on a fenced-in path definitely qualifies as an adventure.

In this case, the scenery was so interesting. You can see the top of the World Trade Center. And at the far end of the walkway, there’s a sunlit red-brick wall that’s the side of the Brooklyn New School on Henry Street.

There are lots of picturesque things to see on a walk along Hamilton Avenue and Columbia Street in Red Hook.

This is 5 Luquer St., which is in contract.

After you double back on the overpass, Hamilton Avenue continues for a couple more blocks to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel.

This is the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, which was renamed to honor the governor who played a big role in rescuing New York from financial collapse in the 1970s.

BTW, it’s North America’s longest continuous underwater tunnel, the MTA’s website says.

There’s a sidewalk by the tunnel’s entrance at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Columbia Street. You can get a good view of the World Trade Center without straying into traffic.

LUNCH AND LOVELY ROWHOUSES After the highway scenery along Hamilton Avenue, the first block of Columbia Street rowhouses seems especially tranquil and charming.

This block is a great place to linger if it’s warm enough for the outdoor seating at Camila’s Cafe (358 Columbia St.) on the corner of Seabring Street. Across the street, Jam’It Bistro (367 Columbia St.) serves Jamaican food.

There’s lots of cool stuff to see at the next intersection.

You’ll notice the cross street is Commerce Street on one side and Luquer Street on the other. The street grid is complicated

in this part of Red Hook.

A mural on the facade of low-rise 22 Commerce St. is eyecatching. The trash bins in front of the building are painted to be part of the mural, which is a nice touch.

An online posting says that Re:Gen:Cy is located in the building. It’s “a community and event space supporting sustainable development” by hosting educational programs, supporting small businesses and providing “a platform for regenerative projects to form.”

On the corner of Luquer Street, at 379 Columbia St., there’s an Italian sandwich shop that has been in business since 1922.

The shop, which is called Defonte’s, is known for its huge hero sandwiches.

A bit further down the street, the bright-white painted brick facade of 5 Luquer St. caught my eye. Between the time that I took my walk and sat down to write this story, the New York Post mentioned this house in an article about five Brooklyn neighborhoods that are great places to live.

The story noted that the house was for sale for an asking price of $1.65 million. A posting on listing broker Compass’s website says the house is in contract.

When you turn back onto Columbia Street, you’ll soon see it forms a traffic triangle with Dwight Street. The third leg of the triangle is called Nelson Street at the corner of Columbia Street and Delavan Street at the corner of Dwight Street.

A portion of the street across from the triangle is blocked from vehicles with skinny bollards and painted with an aquatic mural.

A big former industrial building at 5 Delavan St. is called the Monarch Luggage Factory Lofts. It photographs well when viewed from the corner of Dwight and Verona streets, too.

On Columbia and Verona streets, there’s an apartment complex the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development foreclosed on in 2001, city Finance Department records show.

Later that year, HUD sold a package of properties that included the complex to a private owner for $100,000. The deed specifies that all the apartments in the complex must be maintained as affordable-housing units for 25 years from the date it was signed.

Past the corner of Verona Street, Columbia Street runs down the middle of the multi-block Red Hook Houses. HUD’s Regional Administrator Lynne Patton visited this New York City Housing Authority complex in August to hear residents’ complaints, the Brooklyn Eagle previously reported.

On the corner of Verona and Dwight streets, you’ll see eight-acre Coffey Park. It’s a leafy oasis.

After Columbia Street crosses Lorraine Street, you’ll pass a huge vacant lot at 55 Bay St. A single-story, 95,787 squarefoot development is planned for the site.

Past the intersection of Columbia and Bay streets, you find Red Hook Park.

The running track looks newly refinished and is bright red.

A fence surrounding Red Hook Soccer Field 3 in the middle of the track reminds you it’s off limits because the ground is contaminated with lead. A soil cleanup by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the city Parks Department is in the works.

Across from Red Hook Park, an eye-catching new building at 556 Columbia St. houses a school called Basis Independent Brooklyn. It is on the corner of Sigourney Street.

On the opposite corner of Sigourney Street there’s picturesque, productive Columbia Street Farm. Rows of leafy greens look ready to eat. There’s a composting site.

The 2.75-acre urban farm at 560 Columbia St. was created in 2001 on the site of a concrete baseball field, its website says.

The Monarch Luggage Factory Lofts stand on the corner of Delavan and Dwight streets.

The most eye-catching feature of the terminal is the 120foot-tall Red Hook Grain Terminal, which was built in 1922.

SEAGULLS AND A VIEW OF SUNSET PARK If you want to take a break, there are benches on the sidewalk where you can sit and listen to gulls’ cries. When you look north, Brooklyn Heights and Downtown Brooklyn towers are arrayed on the horizon.

When you start walking again, that’s Erie Basin on your right. Businesses such as VIP Fire Sprinklers Inc. are located there.

Columbia Street curves. When you look out over the water, you’ll see Industry City down in Sunset Park.

The building at the very end of Columbia Street is the NYPD’s Erie Basin vehicular evidence storage facility.

You’ll have to turn around and retrace your steps to public transportation — city buses pick up passengers outside IKEA — or to get to Van Brunt Street for afternoon tea or happy-hour drinks.

RIP TODD SHIPYARD

This is GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal.

IKEA is nearby at 1 Beard St. I didn’t go inside because I would have stayed for hours browsing through the housewares.

Instead, I continued walking down Columbia Street to Erie Basin Park. IKEA was required to construct the 6.3-acre park after the City Planning Commission okayed the demolition of historic Todd Shipyard to make way for the construction of the Swedish furniture retailer’s megastore.

The shipyard dated back to the 1860s.

Gantry cranes that were salvaged from the shipyard are displayed in the park. They stand pretty far away from the Columbia Street side of the recreation area. You should walk to the other end of the park so you can take good photos of them.

When you return to Columbia Street and head south again, the sidewalk runs right along the shoreline. A facility called GBX-Gowanus Bay Terminal is there on your left.

John Quadrozzi Jr. is the president of the terminal, where a wide range of industrial businesses such as scrap metal processors and fuel companies are located.

ON NOV. 12, 1938, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Berlin (AP) — Jews today were assessed 1,000,000,000 marks ($400,000,000) as a penalty for the murder of Ernst vom Rath, German diplomat in Paris, it was announced officially. Field Marshal Hermann Wilhelm Goering, as director of Germany’s fouryear plan, issued a decree, effective next Jan. 1, prohibiting Jews from conducting retail businesses, mail order and commission houses and independent handicraft enterprises. Goering’s decree further banned Jews from heading any industrial or commercial concern by forbidding them to hold the position of ‘betriebsfuehrer,’ which every factory or similar undertaking must have under the national labor law. At the same time, semi-official sources said that 1,600 Jews had been arrested in Berlin alone. (The United Press estimated 6,000 Jews arrested in Berlin.) These sources said it was impossible to estimate how many other Jews had been seized in the rest of Germany since the killing of vom Rath, secretary of the German embassy in Paris, which incited nationwide burnings of synagogues and destruction of Jewish stores Thursday.”

ON NOV. 15, 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Dr. Booker T. Washington, leader of the negro race in America, and president of the Tuskegee Institute, at Tuskegee, Alabama, died yesterday from hardening of the arteries at his home, near the institute, only a few hours after arriving there from New York City, where he had been under treatment in St. Luke’s Hospital all last week … His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning from Tuskegee Institute, the school for negroes which he founded, and for which he worked with unflagging zeal during all of his active career … Dr. Washington was born a slave on the plantation of a family named Burrows, at Hale’s Ford, Virginia, probably in April, 1958. He did not know the exact date of his birth, for in those days records were seldom kept of the birth of slave children, and all he knew about it was what he could gather from hearsay in after years.”  ON NOV. 15, 1925, the Eagle reported, “The new Madison Square Garden, which is being constructed at 8th Ave. and 50th St., Manhattan, is rapidly nearing completion, and plans for the grand opening have been completed. The initial event will serve to reintroduce ice hockey to the New York public, after a lapse of some years, and will bring together the 1925 world’s champions, the Canadiens of Montreal, and the newly assembled team representing the New York Hockey Club, in an international match.

This opening game will be held on Dec. 15 and will be a benefit for the Neurological Institute … The New York Hockey Club will be a member of the seven-club international league which will include representatives of Ottawa, which won the world’s championship in 1920, 1921 and 1923; Montreal, Toronto, the Canadiens of Montreal, who won the world’s championship in 1925; Boston and Pittsburgh.”  ON NOV. 15, 1940, the Eagle reported, “Coventry, England (U.P.) — Squadron after squadron of German airplanes divebombed this ancient industrial city for 10 1/2 hours in an attack which ended early today, leaving at least 1,000 casualties and wrecking the town as thoroughly as an earthquake. The survivors of the Nazi air fury today wandered through broken streets and row after row of houses and buildings shattered to matchwood and rubble by the explosion of thousands of bombs. The history of this present day industrial center of 167,000 population dates back to a medieval past brightened by the famous ride of Lady Godiva clad only in her golden hair. Coventry is 85 miles southwest of London.”  ON NOV. 15, 1950, the Eagle reported, “Tokyo (U.P.) — U.S. Marines reached the shores of the Chosin power reservoir — one of the great prizes of the North Korean campaign — yesterday, to find that its Chinese defenders had fled. But the Chinese were striking back hard in the west, forcing the South Korean 8th Division into a four-mile retreat. A motorized patrol of the Marine 7th Regiment, led by Regimental Comm. Col. Homer L. Litzenberg, Jr. of Philadelphia, reached the shores of the Chosin at 4 p.m. (2 a.m. Brooklyn time), and a half hour later troops began scrambling onto high ground commanding the southern tip of the artificial lake. ‘We’ve come a long way to look at this,’ said Litzenberg, pointing across the reservoir … The Chosin, supplying the bulk of North Korea’s hydroelectric power, had been defended bitterly by the Chinese, apparently to give them time to dismantle the power equipment. The Marines several days ago overran heavy crates of equipment the Chinese had not had time to remove.”

It’s getting harder and harder to find fault with the New York Islanders, who extended their season-high points streak to 13 games Wednesday night by hanging on for a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of 13,293 fans at NYCB Live in Uniondale, N.Y. But reigning Jack Adams Award-winner Barry Trotz, the Islanders’ second-year head coach, still found room for criticism as New York continued its longest points run since a franchise-record 15-game winning streak during the 1981-82 season.

“The game was sort of choppy, but I thought the best stretch was the third period, the first 15 minutes,” said Trotz, whose red-hot club opened a 5-2 lead on Casey Cizikas’ empty-net goal before surrendering a pair of late tallies to the struggling Maple Leafs.

“Once we scored the fifth goal, we just sort of stopped playing a little bit. I thought we were just okay today.”

Just okay might be a bit harsh.

The Isles, who complet-

ed their dual-site four-game homestand with a 3-0-1 mark, with the lone loss coming via an overtime defeat to Pittsburgh at Barclays Center last Thursday night, have climbed into second place in the Metropolitan Division behind Washington with three games in hand.

They have also not lost in regulation since a 5-2 setback at Carolina on Oct. 11, making it more than a month now that Trotz’s team has been playing the best hockey in the NHL. On Wednesday, Anthony Beauvillier scored a pair of goals, Mathew Barzal added a goal and an assist, and Derick Brassard also tallied and had a pair of helpers for New York, which edged Florida, 2-1, last Saturday to complete a run of three straight games in Downtown Brooklyn.

“It’s a different guy coming up with a big play for us at different times,” Isles veteran forward Cal Clutterbuck said of his team’s ongoing run.

“It speaks to the commitment that guys have to their roles.”

Big challenges await city’s new police boss

Each month, Dermot Shea sits with other top New York City police officials and the mayor to brief reporters on the latest crime statistics. In front of them, often, is a big, blue sign featuring a variation on their underlying message: “Safest Big City in America.”

Appointed a week ago to be the city’s next police commissioner, Shea will soon have the ultimate responsibility for keeping it that way. But serious challenges abound for the soon-to-be leader of the nation’s largest police department.

Shea, who succeeds James O’Neill on Dec. 1, will have to contend with looming bail and other criminal justice reforms, pressure to reduce arrests and incarcerations ahead of the planned 2026 closure of the city’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex, and dissent among the department’s 36,000 officers.

“The deck is stacked against him,” said Joseph Giacalone, a former NYPD sergeant who now teaches at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Shea and O’Neill have been raising concerns about the statewide reforms taking effect Jan. 1. Changes include eliminating bail for non-violent felonies, appearance tickets instead of arrests for low-level offenses and a requirement that authorities give more information to defendants before reaching a plea agreement.

Criminal justice advocates say the reforms, amid a widespread shift away from mass incarceration, will bring overdue fairness to a system that has long filled jails with people who are accused of low-level crimes and are unable to afford bail. Law-and-order types fear letting suspects roam free will make the city less safe.

O’Neill, who is leaving to become Visa Inc.’s head of global security, said he’s particularly worried that people involved in violent crimes will be let out whenever they get picked up for lesser offenses. “It’s a lot to throw at us at one time,” O’Neill said.

On top of the reforms, a recently approved plan to replace Rikers with four new jails around the city has officials pushing to cut the number of people locked up on a daily basis by more than half, to 3,300 inmates by 2026, from about 7,000 today.

Drastic drops in crime and a shift in the NYPD’s approach to minor offenses have already helped slash the city’s jail population from a peak of nearly 22,000 in 1991, the year Shea joined the department.

Shea, 50, and O’Neill, 61, worked together to unwind former Police Commissioner William Bratton’s controversial “broken windows” policies, which viewed low-level offenses as a gateway to bigger crimes.

Shea developed data-driven strategies for fighting and preventing crime, and helped O’Neill transition the department to a community-oriented policing philosophy, which pushes officers out of their patrol cars and onto the streets to build bonds with residents.

Shea said that approach, known as neighborhood policing, is vital to coping with the shifting criminal justice landscape. Police officers are increasingly focused on drivers of crime, like gangs and drugs, while looking for alternatives to arresting and incarcerating people in many other cases, he said.

In recent years, officers switched to writing tickets for minor offenses instead of making arrests, while some city prosecutors have stopped hauling people into court for small-time marijuana possession. In 2011, there were about 84,000 misdemeanor drug arrests.

Last year, there were fewer than 24,000.

“The blueprint, I think, is here,” Shea said. “I think it’s time to build on it. There is more work to do for all. We cannot and will not rest until all New Yorkers feel safe.”

Shea, the Queens-bred son of Irish immigrants, worked his way up the ranks over a 28-year NYPD career from Bronx patrolman to chief of detectives. Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was dazzled early on by Shea’s intellect and saw him as “the future of the NYPD.” Critics, though, pointed to a lack of transparency in the selection process and a continued lack of diversity in the department’s upper management. O’Neill’s second-in-command, Benjamin Tucker, who is black, said he was disappointed not to get the job.

Aside from criminal justice reforms, Shea must also navigate strained relationships with the police unions and lingering community resentment over how officers are disciplined and what information the department shares with the public.

The city’s largest police union accused department leadership of abandoning officers amid a wave of attacks on police with everything from water to a metal chair. In August, the union called on O’Neill to resign after firing an officer for the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner.

A spate of officer suicides this year led O’Neill to declare a mental health crisis, reacting to criticism that the department had not done enough to help officers in need. The deaths of two officers in separate friendly fire incidents prompted questions about how the department trains officers to deal with such scenarios.

The biggest factor in Shea’s success or failure, though, will be the crime stats, Giacalone said.
