GUEST EDITORIAL: Why more places are abandoning Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day By Malinda Maynor Lowery | The Conversation

Increasingly, Columbus Day is giving people pause. More and more towns and cities across the country are electing to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an alternative to — or in addition to — the day intended to honor Columbus’ voyages. Critics of the change see it as just another example of political correctness run amok — another flashpoint of the culture wars. As a scholar of Native American history — and a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina — I know the story is more complex than that. The growing recognition and celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day actually represents the fruits of a concerted, decades-long effort to recognize the role of indigenous people in the nation’s history.

WHY COLUMBUS? Columbus Day is a relatively new federal holiday. In 1892, a joint congressional resolution prompted President Benjamin Harrison to mark the “discovery of America by Columbus,” in part because of “the devout faith of the discoverer and for the divine care and guidance which has directed our history and so abundantly blessed our people.”

Europeans invoked God’s will to impose their will on indigenous people. So it seemed logical to call on God when establishing a holiday celebrating that conquest, too. Of course, not all Americans considered themselves blessed in 1892. That same year, a lynching forced black journalist Ida B. Wells to flee her home town of Memphis. And while Ellis Island had opened in January of that year, welcoming European immigrants, Congress had already banned Chinese immigration a decade prior, subjecting Chinese people living in the U.S. to widespread persecution. And then there was the government’s philosophy towards the country’s Native Americans, which Army Colonel Richard Henry Pratt so unforgettably articulated in 1892: “All the Indian there is in the race should be dead. Kill the Indian in him and save the man.” It took another 42 years for Columbus Day to formally become a federal holiday, thanks to a 1934 decree by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was responding, in part, to a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, a national Catholic charity founded to provide services to Catholic immigrants. Over time, its agenda expanded to include advo-

cacy for Catholic social values and education. When Italians first arrived in the United States, they were targets of marginalization and discrimination. Officially celebrating Christopher Columbus — an Italian Catholic — became one way to affirm the new racial order that would emerge in the U.S. in the 20th century, one in which the descendants of diverse ethnic European immigrants became “white” Americans.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE POWER

But some Americans started to question why Indigenous people — who’d been in the country all along — didn’t have their own holiday. In the 1980s, Colorado’s American Indian Movement chapter began protesting the celebration of Columbus Day. In 1989, activists in South Dakota persuaded the state to replace Columbus Day with Native American Day. Both states have large Native populations that played active roles in the Red Power Movement in the 1960s and 1970s, which sought to make American Indian people more politically visible. Then, in 1992, at the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage, American Indians in Berkeley, California, organized the first “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” a holiday the city council soon formally adopted. Berkeley has since replaced its commemoration of Columbus with a celebration of indigenous people. The holiday can also trace its origins to the United Nations. In 1977, indigenous leaders from around the

world organized a United Nations conference in Geneva to promote indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. Their first recommendation was “to observe October 12, the day of so-called ‘discovery’ of America, as an International Day of Solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.” It took another 30 years for their work to be formally recognized in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was adopted in September 2007.

UNEXPECTED ALLIES

Today, cities with significant native populations, like Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles, now celebrate either Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. And states like Hawaii, Nevada, Minnesota, Alaska and Maine have also formally recognized their Native populations with similar holidays. Many Native governments, like the Cherokee and Osage in Oklahoma, either don’t observe Columbus Day or have replaced it with their own holiday. But you’ll also find commemorations in less likely places. Alabama celebrates Native American Day alongside Columbus Day, as does North Carolina, which, with a population of over 120,000 Native Americans, has the largest number of Native Americans of any state east of the Mississippi River. Just last year, the town of Carrboro, North Carolina, issued a resolution to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. The resolution noted the fact that the town of 21,000 had been built on indigenous

land and that it was committed to “protect, respect and fulfill the full range of inherent human rights,” including those of indigenous people. While Columbus Day affirms the story of a nation created by Europeans for Europeans, Indigenous Peoples Day emphasizes Native histories and Native people — an important addition to the country’s ever-evolving understanding of what it means to be American.

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal judges in three states on Friday temporarily blocked Donald Trump’s policy to deny green cards to many immigrants who use Medicaid, food stamps and other government benefits, dealing a setback to one of the president’s most aggressive moves yet to cut legal immigration and make it more based on employment skills than family ties. The rulings in California, New York and Washington came in quick succession four days before the new rules were set to take effect. The judges ruled in favor of 21 states and the District of Columbia, which challenged the policy almost immediately after it was announced in August. U.S. District Judge George Daniels in New York said the policy redefined longstanding immigration laws with a new framework that had “no logic.” Allowing the policy to go into effect now, he said, would have a significant impact on “lawabiding residents who have come to this country to seek a better life.” “Overnight, the rule will expose individuals to economic insecurity, health instability, denial of their path to citizenship and potential deportation,” Daniels wrote. “It is a rule that will punish individuals for their receipt of benefits provided by our government, and discourages them from lawfully receiving available assistance intended to aid them in becoming contributing members of society.” Ken Cuccinelli, acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, expressed confidence that the administration would eventually prevail and framed the policy as a legal attempt to ensure that those who settle in the United States can support themselves financially. “An objective judiciary will see that this rule lies squarely within long-held existing law,” Cuccinelli wrote on Twitter. “Longstanding federal law requires aliens to rely on their own capabilities and the resources of their families, sponsors, and private organizations in their communities to succeed.” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham added that the rulings were “extremely disappointing” and “the latest inexplicable example of the administration being ordered to comply with the flawed or lawless guidance of a previous administration instead of the actual laws passed by Congress.” While Trump has focused much of his attention on illegal immigration — including his pledge to build a wall on the Mexican border — he has also trained his sights on curbing legal immigration by moving away from a system that is largely based on family ties. He outlined his plans early in his administration in discussions with Congress to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws, turning to executive actions after those efforts failed. Just last week, Trump issued a presidential proclamation that says immigrants will be barred from the country unless they are covered by health insurance within 30 days of entering or have enough financial resources to pay for any medical costs. The measure, which is scheduled to take effect Nov. 3, could prohibit the entry of about 375,000 people a year, mainly family

members who account for a majority of people getting green cards from abroad, according to the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. Friday’s rulings put the policy to deny green cards to more immigrants on government aid on hold while lawsuits proceed. Federal law already requires immigrants seeking to become permanent U.S. residents to prove they will not be a burden on the country — a “public charge,” in legal terms —but the new rules detail a broader range of programs that could disqualify applicants. On average, 544,000 people apply for green cards every year, with about 382,000 falling into categories that would be subject to the new review, according to the government. Guidelines in use since 1999 refer to a “public charge” as someone primarily dependent on cash assistance, income maintenance or government support. Under the new rules, the Department of Homeland Security has redefined a public charge as someone who is “more likely than not” to receive public benefits for more than 12 months within a 36-month period. If someone uses two benefits, that is counted as two months. And the definition has been broadened to include Medicaid, housing assistance and food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Factors like the immigrant’s age, employment status and English-language ability would also be looked at to determine whether they could potentially become public burdens at any point in the future. While the administration argues that the rule changes would ensure that those gaining legal residency status are self-sufficient, critics say they are discriminatory and would have the effect of barring immigrants with lower incomes in favor of those with wealth. They consider it a betrayal of Emma Lazarus’ words on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the ruling “an important win for our country (that) sends a clear message that we will not allow these hateful policies imposed by the Trump administration to tear our country apart. Xavier Becerra, California’s attorney general, said it stops a “heartless attempt to weaponize” health care, housing and other essential public services. Daniels’ ruling in New York was in a lawsuit filed by the states of New York, Connecticut and Vermont. The Washington decision, authored by U.S. District Judge Rosanna Molouf Peterson in Spokane, was in a lawsuit by the state of Washington and 13 others: Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Virginia. U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in Oakland, California, ruled in favor of California, Maine, Oregon, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Her decision applies only in those states, a moot point because the other two injunctions are nationwide. Daniels and Hamilton were appointed by President Bill Clinton. Peterson was appointed by President Barack Obama.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard debuted on Tuesday its first new-fromthe-ground-up commercial development in more than a decade. BROOKLYN MUSEUM — A young lawyer died after he fell trying to slide down a banister at the Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturday party last week, according to Gothamist. Kirkland Dawson lost his balance and fell three stories. He was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he died the next day. Dawson, a law school graduate of Western Michigan University, worked as a parole officer in Michigan before moving to New York to pursue a legal career.  KENSINGTON — A driver struck and killed a 60-year-old woman on Church Avenue near East Fourth Street in Kensington on Saturday, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Olga Feldman and a companion were struck by a black Cadillac SRX traveling west on Church Avenue. The two were rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where Feldman was pronounced dead. The Brooklyn Paper reported that there have been 13 crashes on Church Avenue between Coney Island and McDonald avenues since 2016. 

ACTIVISTS SEEK TO FIND CHICKENS, SEIZED DURING JEWISH RITUAL, NEW HOMES

BUSHWICK — In a basement of a Bushwick house, about 100 chickens are awaiting transport to new homes after being rescued, according to NY1 News. Alexa Stone and her friend Rocky Schwartz rescued the chickens, which were originally purchased for a custom called Kaporos practiced by Hasidic Jews shortly before Yom Kippur (see Brooklyneagle.com). The chicken is flung in a circle around one’s head three times while a prayer transfers one’s sins to the bird, which is then slaughtered. However, the pair says, baby chickens are abandoned for a variety of reasons throughout the year in Brooklyn. Schwartz has kept a handful of rescued birds over the years. Most get transported to animal sanctuaries, according to NY1. 

SMORGASBURG TO MOVE TO NEW INDOOR SPACE

WILLIAMSBURG — Smorgasburg, the nation’s largest open-air food market, is moving indoors next month, according to the Brooklyn Paper. It will open at 25 Kent Ave. between North 12th and North 13th streets in Williamsburg. Smorgasburg’s outdoor food fairs will run on Saturdays in East River State Park and on Sundays in Prospect Park until the end of October before it moves to the new indoor venue. Last year, Smorgasburg moved for the winter to the Atlantic Center Mall. 

KOSCIUSZKO BRIDGE TRAFFIC STILL PROBLEMATIC

GREENPOINT — Traffic on the new Kosciuszko Bridge is not much better than on the bridge it replaced, according to NY1 News. In particular, drivers heading from Queens to Brooklyn have seen no improvement in traffic speeds in the morning or evening rush hour, according to a study from the transportation firm INRIX. Things are worse for drivers headed in the opposite direction, NY1 News said. Queens-bound travel in the evening rush hour proceeded at an average of 16 miles per hour on the new bridge. 

ADAMS, AT CROWN HEIGHTS VIGIL, DECRIES VIOLENCE

CROWN HEIGHTS — Borough President Eric Adams on Monday was one of several local leaders who spoke after a vigil to mourn the four victims of a shooting at an illegal gambling club on Utica Avenue in Crown Heights, according to CBSNewYork. Police identified the victims, all of them from Brooklyn, as Dominick Winbush, Chester Goode, Terence Bishop and John Thomas. Three other people were injured in the shooting. Police have recovered two weapons at the scene but haven’t yet made any arrests. 

COPS FIND STOLEN CAR WITH CHILD IN BACK SEAT

EAST NEW YORK — A 6-year-old boy was found safe in East New York, along with the stolen car in which he was a passenger, according to ABC7. The incident happened early Monday afternoon on Avenue L in Canarsie, where a white Acura MDX was reported stolen outside a plumbing supply store. “A guy just left his nephew in the car,” a witness told ABC7. “And somebody just drove the car away.” After a two-hour search, police found the child, identified as Ronald Mowatt, inside the car at Linden Boulevard and Georgia Avenue. The boy appeared to be unharmed, police said. 

COPS SEEK SUSPECTS IN ROBBERY OF DELIVERYMAN

EAST NEW YORK — Police are looking for two men who they say attacked and robbed a deliveryman in September, according to PIX11. The man was working inside his parked delivery truck on Williams Avenue near Newport Street in East New

York on Sept. 24 when the suspects entered the truck. The suspects assaulted the worker, stole his wallet containing $200 in cash, then fled. Surveillance photos released by police show two young African-American men, one shirtless and wearing a white baseball cap and the other wearing a red T-shirt and a black baseball cap. 

JIMMY KIMMEL HEADS TO BAM ONCE AGAIN

FORT GREENE — Jimmy Kimmel will be heading to Brooklyn for a week of shows starting on Oct. 21, according to Deadline, a show-business website. Kimmel’s lineup of guests is scheduled to include Eddie Murphy, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kelly Ripa, Ellie Kemper, John Krasinski, Paul Schaffer, David Byrne and the Sugarhill Gang. The show will be taped in front of a live audience at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It will be the fifth time Kimmel and his show have broadcast live from BAM, Deadline said. 

GROUP BOYCOTTS FLATBUSH BAR AFTER ASSAULTS ON WOMEN

FLATBUSH — An organization named Equality for Flatbush is hoping to get a Flatbush bar called the Zombie House closed after six women were reportedly assaulted there, according to News 12 Brooklyn. The most recent alleged attack took place when a man approached a woman, poured a beer on her, then knocked her to the ground. Another victim claimed she was sexually assaulted by the owner last year, News 12 Brooklyn reported. A representative of the bar said Equality for Brooklyn was spreading misinformation. 

ORTIZ BILL TO HELP LGBTQ YOUTH SIGNED INTO LAW

SUNSET PARK — Assemblymember Felix Ortiz (D-Sunset ParkRed Hook) last week saw Gov. Andrew Cuomo sign his bill that requires employees of programs providing care to runaway or homeless youth to attend training on how to deal with LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ youngsters make up to 40 percent of the population in these facilities. Ortiz contends that staff should be trained about how to address homophobia from other youth and how to deal with challenges specific to the LGBTQ community. “Many of these young people have faced difficult family situations due to their sexual orientation and/or gender expression,” Ortiz said. 

VICTORIAN FLATBUSH HOME BEING SOLD FOR $2.25M

MIDWOOD PARK — A single-family home in the Midwood Park area, built in 1908, is being sold for $2.25 million, according to Brownstoner. The home, at 699 E. 18th St. in the Fiske Terrace-Midwood Park Historic District, was built in the Colonial Revival style and has a hipped roof, bay windows and a wrap-around porch. “With seven bedrooms and four bathrooms over three floors plus a cellar, there is no lack of space,” Brownstoner said. THREE NEIGHBORHOODS JOIN MILLION-DOLLAR LIST

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Since 2015, three Brooklyn neighborhoods have hit a median recorded real estate sales price of $1 million or more, according to Business Insider. The three neighborhoods are Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Heights and Williamsburg. A report by StreetEasy, a real estate listing website, said that there were only four million-dollar neighborhoods in the city in 2010, but now there are 17. 

ANTI-JEWISH ASSAULTS REPORTED IN BROOKLYN

CROWN HEIGHTS — A Jewish man was slapped in the face and called a “dirty Jew” in Crown Heights on Saturday afternoon, according to the Forward. Police say the assailant was an African-American man on a bicycle. The incident is being investigated as a hate crime. Also, on Friday night in Borough Park, occupants in a car threw eggs at two Jewish men walking in the area. 

OFFICER INJURED IN BROOKLYN HIT-AND-RUN

PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — A police officer suffered a leg injury after he was run over by a suspect’s car in Brooklyn, but the suspect was arrested a half hour later after fleeing on foot, according to the New York Post. The cop, whose identity was not released, was hit near Bedford Avenue and Rutland Road in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens late Saturday night by a man driving a silver Audi sedan. After the driver ran the cop over, he crashed his car into a parked vehicle and fled on foot, police said. The officer was taken to Kings County Hospital. 

DUO TO OPEN ARGENTINIAN EMPANADA RESTAURANT

WILLIAMSBURG — Brooklyn restaurateurs Andres Whant and Andreas Rodas, who own the Italian restaurants Piccoli Trattoria in Park Slope and Belli Osteria in Clinton Hill, plan to open Masa Empanadas, an Argentinian empanada restaurant, at 804 Grand St. on Oct. 21. Whang told Patch that the new restaurant will focus on serving empanadas “with a Brooklyn flair.” Both owners grew up in Argentina. Patch added that all the empanadas will be served in a “no forks, no plates, no worries” style. 

B’KLYN STD RATES HIT RECORD HIGHS

BOROUGHWIDE — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its annual report, which reveals that Brooklyn has some of the highest rates of chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea in the country, Patch said. The report ranks Kings County sixth among the top 10 U.S. counties where the diseases are most prevalent and said Brooklyn has the most cases of chlamydia in New York State. CDC Director Gail Bolan said that progress in STD prevention has reversed in the U.S., and that “the resurgence of syphilis, and particularly congenital syphilis, is not an arbitrary event, but rather a symptom of a deteriorating public health infrastructure and lack of access to health care.”

Play Nice Theatre has begun its season of lighthearted musicals with positive, life-affirming messages about cooperation and kindness. And they’re looking for their July/August cast, musicians, and backstage helpers. Relocated from Manhattan, this all-volunteer company’s rehearsals and meetings refl ect their of mission Photos courtesy JAG-ONE and message by encouraging its mixed-generation cast and crew (ages 6 to 106) to interact socially and share stories of their own lives on and off stage. In a welcoming atmosphere, the experienced and new Play Nice actors and crew are encouraged to come early and linger after assigned rehearsal slots in order to get to know each other, help each other memorize their lines, do school homework and play games. Some may choose to help with scenery painting or prop-making. All ticket sales from main stage shows ($10 admission) is donated to local charities, a prime motivation for many participants who find it rewarding to help raise money for those less fortunate through donating their time and talent. FIAO celebrates 38th annual Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade By John Alexander INBrooklyn

It was an absolutely spectacular sunny day on Saturday, Oct. 12, with temperatures hovering around 70℉ for the Federation of Italian American Organizations’ 38th annual Brooklyn Columbus Day Parade. The parade, billed as the longest in New York City, started at 61st Street and 18th Avenue in Bensonhurst and ended at Il Centro on Benson Avenue and 18th Avenue. It all began with a pre-parade Mass at 10:15 a.m. at St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church at Bay Parkway and 61st Street with celebrant Rev. Msgr. David Cassato. The parade kicked off at 1 p.m. with school bands, elected officials, sponsors and proud Italian-Americans marching along the parade route. This year’s grand marshals were Francesco Genuardi, consul general of Italy in New York; Dr. Salvatore Cumella, executive vice president Lenco Diagnostic Laboratory and president and CEO of Cumella Professional Services; Capt. Anthony Longobardi, commanding officer of the 62nd Precinct; Robert Ciulla, principal at Dyker Heights Intermediate School; and Denise Daniello, director of admissions and community liaison at the Bensonhurst Center for Rehabilitation. “We express a deep sense of pride at today’s parade,” said Genuardi. “I think it’s the highest moment of the year to recognize how important contributions of Italians are to America and to the borough of Brooklyn. And I’m personally proud of all the Italian immigrants who came from Italy to Brooklyn, for what they did, what they’re doing and what they will do,” he added. Elected officials marching in the parade included U.S. Rep.Max Rose; State Sen. Andrew Gounardes; Assemblymembers Peter Abbate, Bill Colton and Nicole Malliotakis; and City Councilmember Justin Brannan. Also attending was Father Michael Gelfant of St. Finbar Catholic Church, who offered the benediction, and former City Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who was recently honored by the members of the New York City Council at its Italian Heritage Celebration. Carlo Scissura, president of FIAO, hosted the event from a reviewing stand set up directly across the street from the federation’s Il Centro headquarters. Scissura thanked the 62nd Precinct for helping with the parade security, welcomed guests and said, “Finally, a Columbus Day with no rain,” to which Gentile added, “God must be Italian.” Scissura asked everybody to turn around and face the Il Centro building. “Do you remember when everybody said we would never build an Italian community and cultural center in Brooklyn? Well, you’re looking at it, everybody. We built it, it’s running and people love it,” he added. Participating groups included the Bikes of Brooklyn and the New York City Police Band, which led the parade. Other marchers included parade sponsor Investors Bank, Tottenville High School in Staten Island, the Junior ROTC from Roosevelt High School, BenBay Kiwanis, the order of the Sons of Italy in America, the Knights of Columbus, Italian costumed dancers from St. Athanasius, and the Dyker Heights Intermediate School Marching Band, which performed the Italian national anthem. Frank Naccarato, past president of the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn, said, “It’s a beautiful day, not just for the Italians but for the entire community. We’re very proud of what we have accomplished through the years and we are counting on the community to support us. We’re already looking forward to next year and just having a great day today.” When asked what the parade meant to him, Lenny Aronica, an active member of Il Centro, said, “It means I’m proud to be an Italian-American and it gives me a thrill to see everybody so happy. I come to Il Centro every day and the people here treat me like a king. I’m just very lucky to be here,” he added.

Call it the Pizza Trail. You can walk from the Bay Ridge shoreline to popular L&B Spumoni Gardens in Gravesend on a single road — 86th Street. On this approximately five-mile trek, you’ll see a slice of southern Brooklyn. The street cuts through Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, then serves as the dividing line between Bensonhurst and Bath Beach and after that heads into Gravesend — to the metal picnic tables outside L&B Spumoni Gardens. The real estate you’ll find along the way is a vivid mix of suburban homes on large lawns, 20th-century rowhouses with garages and porches, fine old apartment buildings and storefronts thronging with customers. The famous pizzeria that’s your ultimate destination has been in business since 1939. It started out as a factory that made spumoni, which is a type of gelato. I’ll give you more details about this dessert when I get to L&B. Before you start your stroll, here’s what you need to know about the pizza at L&B. Neapolitan-style round pies and triangular slices are available. But you’re walking five miles to have a quintessential Brooklyn Experience, so you really should order the pizza squares for which L&B is famous. They’re topped by red sauce, with layers of cheese underneath and big, bread-like crust on the bottom. Veteran food critic Robert Sietsema says this type of pizza with the cheese below the sauce is sometimes called “the upside-down Sicilian style.” By the way, in his June 2019 Eater New York review, he says, “L & B Spumoni Gardens entirely rocks.” It would be a good idea to go there soon, while the weather is still warm enough for you to sit outside. But if you decide you want to eat there when the weather’s cold, fear not. L&B has a glassed-in porch and indoor dining room.

SHORELINE HOUSES If you don’t live in Bay Ridge, you might want to take the NYC Ferry to the neighborhood stop and stroll down Shore Road to get to the spot where 86th Street begins. The ferry service launched in June 2017. The houses on Shore Road are an eyeful in the best possible way. Many are perched on hilly lawns. Eighty-Sixth Street starts at the corner of Shore Road.

Our destination on this walk is L&B Spumoni Gardens (ABOVE) in Gravesend. The pizza draws locals and tourists INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan to L&B Spumoni Gardens. The houses on the first block of 86th Street between Shore Road and Narrows Avenue are big and beautiful, with ample lawns. On the next several blocks after that, the stand-alone houses vary in size from mansions to homes that look rather small on their street-facing sides but stretch way, way into their deep lots, so they’re really big. Everybody’s still got green lawns, though it’s autumn. The day of my walk, the leaves on the trees were still green, which was lovely. In a couple weeks, they’ll change to their fall colors, which will look wonderful too. Two big, old-fashioned houses at 130 86th St. and 132 86th St. looked especially pretty.

TIME FOR A COFFEE BREAK There’s one more quiet residential block — the one between Ridge Boulevard and Third Avenue — before 86th Street becomes a busy retail corridor. On this quiet block, you’ll see barrel-shaped limestone houses that are probably a century old.

UM, DRAG RACING? Since you’re doing this walk in the daytime, these blocks of 86th Street near the shoreline are tranquil and charming. Nighttime is a different story. Drag racing is a problem after dark. Yes. Drag racing. No. I’m not kidding. But the only thing the city Department of Transportation has been willing to do is paint median-strip lines instead of building concrete pedestrian islands, my colleague Meaghan McGoldrick recently reported. Anyway. Since it’s daytime and you can enjoy the scenery without the roar of illegal drag racers, stop for a moment to look at 8524 Ridge Boulevard, which is on the corner of 86th Street. The red-brick mansion stands on a hill with tremendous trees. Certificates of Occupancy in city Buildings Department records suggest that the house was built in 1926 and a renovation was completed just over a decade ago.

— Continued from page 20INB — There’s all kinds of great stuff on the retail blocks. Most notably, Century 21, the famous department store with discounted designer brands, is at 472 86th St. The salesclerks don’t allow photos to be taken inside the store, so I can’t show you the vintage Louis Vuitton handbags or the racks of beautiful clothes. Since you’re walking five miles, surely you’ll want a cup of coffee at some point. There are a zillion excellent spots to pick one up. I stopped at Mocha Mocha Coffee at 8602 Fourth Ave. on the corner of 86th Street. They make crepes and the pistachio baklava is really good. They serve loose-leaf Turkish tea in a carafe with a tiny hourglass beside it so you’ll know how long to let the tea steep. The busy retail blocks continue until the corner of Gatling Place, where 86th Street passes over the Gowanus Expressway. You can stand on the sidewalk and watch the rivers of traffic flowing on the highway down below.

REAL ESTATE

LOVELY DYKER HEIGHTS HOUSES After you cross busy Seventh Avenue, you’re in Dyker Heights. On the south side of 86th Street between Seventh and 14th avenues, you’ll find Dyker Beach Park, which includes a vast golf course. The north side of the street is lined with houses. Come back another day for a separate stroll around Dyker Heights. You’ve probably come here to see the neighborhood’s famous holiday lights. The suburban-style houses and big lawns are eye-catching in the daylight, without any yuletide decorations. One of the many lovely neighborhood homes you can see without detouring from your walk to Gravesend is at 1265 86th St. It has a pointy-roofed conical turret and a front lawn full of tremendous trees.

BENSONHURST AND BATH BEACH, SIDE BY SIDE When you cross 14th Avenue, you’re in Bensonhurst or Bath Beach, depending on which side of 86th Street you’re walking on.

This row of old-fashioned houses can be found on 86th Street in Bensonhurst. On the north side of 86th Street, which is Bensonhurst, there are some places with a very suburban feel, such as strip-mall-style retail buildings with parking lots and an Outback Steakhouse on the corner of 15th Avenue. Bay Ridge Chevrolet at 1575 86th St. has a Corvette convertible in the front window that you have to look at. It’s a thing of beauty. I say this as someone who is usually indifferent to the charms of automotive design. I don’t even drive anymore. On the south side of 86th Street, which is in Bath Beach, there are a couple blocks of single-story retail buildings with stone facades and tiny turrets that kind of suggest miniature castles. Near 17th Avenue, on the Bensonhurst side of 86th Street, there’s a beautiful row of yellow-brick houses with rectangular window bays. These homes look like they were built a century ago. They’re so pretty. There are excellent restaurants and bakeries in many storefronts between here and L&B Spumoni Gardens. Of course you’ll want to come back and try some of them when pizza’s not foremost in your mind. I managed to stay out of these tempting restaurants. But I did duck into El Tamarindo, a deli at 1729 86th St. that carries foods from Mexico and Guatemala, to buy a tamarind paleta (which is a frozen fruit bar) seasoned with chile powder. Those things are irresistible.

GROCERY SHOPS AND GRAND BANKS Overhead subway tracks appear above 86th Street where it converges with New Utrecht Avenue. This part of the street is very busy on weekends. In addition to the restaurants I just mentioned, there are lots of grocery shops with home furnishings stores and sneakers stores mixed in. On a couple of corner sites, distinguished bank buildings inject a note of grandeur. For instance, a former Dime Savings Bank is at 1901 86th St. on the corner of 19th Avenue. It has columns and looks like a Classical temple. It was built in 1929. It is now a Chase Bank branch. On the corner of 23rd Avenue, there’s a dignified HSBC branch. Its address is 2301 86th St. The handsome stone building has a dome on top of it that’s visible from several blocks away. A Certificate of Occupancy in Buildings Department records says the bank was constructed in 1926.

Engine Company 253’s firehouse is a city landmark. Buildings Department records also indicate that in the 1990s, this was a branch of Republic National Bank, which HSBC later acquired. An online summary of Republic’s history says that in 1974 it merged with Kings Lafayette Bank, which had 18 Brooklyn branches. I think that’s what this bank must have been. According to a New York Times obituary of a retired chairperson of Kings Lafayette Bank, that institution was created by the 1965 merger of Lafayette National Bank and Kings County Trust Company. I do not know which of these two banks was the original occupant of 2301 86th St. during the first four decades of the building’s existence. Readers, did any of you have a bank account at 2301 86th St., or work in the area, before the 1965 merger? If so, please let me know what the bank was originally called.

Limestone rowhouses can be found on 86th Street between Ridge Boulevard and Third Avenue. A landmarked home that’s popularly called Lady Moody’s House and was constructed on land she owned is at 27 Gravesend Neck Road. If it’s late and you want to get home, the D train’s 25th Avenue station is just a few blocks away.

GRAVESEND AT LAST Engine Company 253’s firehouse stands at 2425-2427 86th St. The eye-catching brick building was constructed in 1895 and 1896. The Parfitt Brothers, an important architectural firm of that era, designed the Dutch Renaissance Revival firehouse. When you get to the firehouse, you’re in Gravesend, the maps I brought with me indicate. Some of the things I read about Engine Company 253 say it’s in Bensonhurst. I’d spent so much time taking photos and staring into shop windows that daylight was starting to fade at this point on my stroll. So I picked up the pace on the final blocks of my Pizza Trail. I crossed busy Stillwell Avenue and then Avenue U. On the other side of the intersection of West 11th Street, the sign for L&B Spumoni Gardens appeared. The pizzeria’s address is 2725 86th St. Of course I tried the pizza squares. They were delicious. Feel free to argue the merits of thin-crust pizza versus thick-crust pizza amongst yourselves. As far as I’m concerned, pizza isn’t like political parties. You don’t have to pick a side if you don’t want to. Of course I tried the spumoni. You can get pistachio, chocolate and cremolata in a single serving. It was delicious. As I ate, sunset faded into night. The letters “LB” lit up in neon on top of the restaurant. They’re the initials for Ludovico Barbati, who founded the business 80 years ago. If your stroll to this beloved pizzeria only took you a couple hours and you have daylight to spare, when you’re done with dessert you should walk over to Gravesend’s historic blocks where Lady Deborah Moody settled in the 1600s.

ON OCT. 16, 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Various opinions were expressed today by Brooklyn surgeons and those familiar with the effect of bullet wounds regarding the strength shown by Colonel [Theodore] Roosevelt at Milwaukee after the bullet fired at him lodged in his breast. Viewing it from the information given by the newspapers, I believe that Colonel Roosevelt’s actions, under the circumstances, showed him to be a man of tremendous physical strength. That is about the only thing which could account for his activity, wounded as he was.’”  ON OCT. 16, 1946, the Eagle reported, “Nuernberg — Reichsmarshal Hermann Goering succeeded in cheating the gallows of allied justice by committing suicide in his prison cell a short time before the 10 other condemned remnants of the Nazi hierarchy were hanged earlier today. Despite the fact that an American security guard was supposed to be watching his every movement, the Crown Prince of Nazidom managed to place in his mouth, chew and swallow a vial containing cyanide of potassium. The vial of poison was hidden in a copper cartridge shell. Goering swallowed the poison while Col. S. Burton Andrus, American security commandant, was walking across the prison yard to the death block to read him and the 10 other condemned Nazi leaders the International Military Tribunal’s sentence of death … Goering had not previously been told that he was going to die this morning, nor had any of the other condemned men. How he guessed that this was to be his day of doom and how he managed to conceal the poison on his person is a mystery that has confounded the security forces.”  ON OCT. 16, 1949, the Eagle reported, “Hong Kong (U.P.) — The Chinese Communists occupied the heart of Canton yesterday and pushed south today to the British border, a dozen miles from the heart of Hong Kong. The vanguard of the Red army was drawn up across a flimsy barbed wire fence at the border between China and British territory, where 40,000 British troops were at battle stations. British and Gurkha troops waited with tanks, mobile guns, planes and armored cars ready to repel any invaders, whether Nationalist or Communist. Red troops, pursuing fleeing Nationalist soldiers, reached Shumchun, the village where the Canton-Kowloon railway crosses the border. Shumchun is about 15 miles north of Hong Kong. Communist underground agents took over the border village of Shataukok, 13 miles from the heart of Hong Kong. Shataukok is seven miles east of Shumchun, from which Red troops fanned out along the 20-mile border.”  ON OCT. 17, 1962, the Eagle reported, “With $125,000 riding on every pitch, the whiplash right arm of handsome Ralph Terry fired a pulsating 1-0 four-hitter for the deciding victory which gave the New York Yankees their 20th World Series Championship. Beaten four times in series play before he finally snapped his hoodoo by winning the fifth game, the 26-year-old Terry earned the plaudits of 43,948 fans in wind-swept Candlestick Park with a classic clutch performance. For those mighty Yankees gave him only one run to work with, and with $4,000 a man in series gold as well as the glory which goes with it hanging on every fastball and each curling curve, Terry tossed them to victory.”
