Coney Island pol gets fundsfor ‘holistic’ approach to curb gun violence By Meaghan McGoldrick The PHOENIX

Anti-violence programs across Coney Island are getting $850,000 in city funding to address an uptick in gun violence in the community, starting with gaps in social services. The funding, announced Tuesday by Councilmember Mark Treyger, will focus on holistic approaches like education and access to social workers. The goal, the lawmaker said, is to back a more proactive approach as opposed to a reactive one. The 60th Precinct, which includes Coney Island, Brighton Beach, West Brighton Beach and Sea Gate, has seen 12 shooting incidents so far in 2019 as of Dec. 8. That number is up from just three last year, and five murders this year compared to none in 2018, according to NYPD data. “We have a very holistic approach [here] to deal with public safety because, to me, you can’t look at things through silos,” Treyger said Tuesday at Liberation Diploma Plus High School. “What brought this together was, after each shooting, we did follow up with the 60th Precinct and other local law enforcement and we tried to find out what happened. But what we also did was ask how could we be helpful and proactive — not just reactive.” He and his colleagues found there was a connection between those who had committed shootings and those who had been through the criminal justice system. “Literally almost every single person that has committed an act of shooting, or an act of violence, has been through the justice system before, over and over and over again,” Treyger said. “You cannot

just simply police your way out of this issue. You cannot incarcerate your way out of this issue. You need to actually help people and address the roots.” Treyger said Tuesday that he secured $550,000 in City Council discretionary funding with support from Speaker Corey Johnson. He said he also worked to secure an additional funding enhancement of $300,000 to expand the Crisis Management System, the mayor’s anti-gun violence initiative, throughout Coney Island. The city’s allocation will add to a $250,000 grant from the state’s SNUG Neighborhood Violence Prevention Program for the Coney Island Anti-Violence Collaborative, a coalition of residents, business owners and organizations working together to end gun violence on the peninsula. The new city funding will go toward continuing the efforts of local organizations including the Operation H.O.O.D., Cure Violence Initiative and the Collaborative, as well as national ones operating in the area: Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services, the Center for Employment Opportunities, Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, Family Preservation Services and Heart Share St. Vincent’s Services. Operation H.O.O.D. — “Helping Our Own Develop” — aims to identify and mediate conflict among at-risk youth through mentorship and case management services. The group helps with housing, health care, social services and education, while promoting community norms that reject violence. Derek Latif Scott, the director of Operation H.O.O.D., told the room Tuesday

that his program’s violence interrupters have interrupted 117 violent acts so far this year. “We talk about trauma, but the trigger is pulled before the trigger is pulled,” Scott said. “What I mean by that is in so many cases, these adverse childhood experiences that exist within our household, within our neighborhood, that we turn a blind eye and deaf ear to. “We need a lot of work to be done, we want change to happen,” Scott went on, “but, unfortunately, a lot of us aren’t looking in the mirror and saying ‘I want to become the change.’ We have to look in the mirror and say, ‘What am I doing to change the face of Coney Island?’ That’s what my team is doing.” Many of the other programs assist individuals coming out of the justice system in finding jobs, building careers and achieving financial stability, as well as connecting them to education, health and social services. “Every year, about 600,000 people return home [from incarceration] and, for the most part, they’re left to fend for themselves,” Derick Bowers, director of social

enterprise at Center for Employment Opportunities said. “It’s very difficult for them, no matter how many policies we pass like banning the box on job applications, there’s still this huge stigma, these huge barriers that exist every day for those returning home.” Bowers’ organization provides immediate — and paid — transitional employment at 26 locations across the country. “We know that that immediate payment really goes a long way for those who really have those barriers, who need to get up in the morning and get a MetroCard, print out a resume, buy a tie because how can we expect folks to do those things without those resources,” he said. The neighborhood’s increase in shootings is an outlier in the precincts that make up Brooklyn South, where shootings overall are down 23 percent as of Dec. 8. Citywide, the number of shootings have slightly risen in comparison to 2018. That’s driven in part by a spate of mass shootings in other parts of Brooklyn. Court internship program blossoms into a marriage By Rob Abruzzese The PHOENIX

Eva Tshama and Tahirou Sow both moved to the U.S. as international students and attended the same college, but it wasn’t until they both got internships in the Brooklyn Supreme Court that they met each other and eventually married. Two interns who went into the Brooklyn court system looking to start a career found that and more, as the duo — who met in the courthouse — recently went on to get married. Eva Tshama and Tahirou Sow, one from France, the other from Guinea, came to the United States as international students and eventually found themselves working together for David Polk in the court's I.T. department. After hitting it off and dating for a while, the pair was married over the summer of 2019. “Eva and Tahirou could have met at school, at the library, at the induction ceremony of the honor society or even at the international students' office,” said Charmaine Johnson, who supervises the court’s Summer Youth Internship Program. “Nevertheless, they met one Thursday morning at the Kings County Supreme Court during their internship with the I.T. department.” Tshama moved to the U.S. from France in 2014.

She already had a bachelor's degree in sociology from Strasbourg University, but came here to study criminal justice at ASA College in Manhattan, eventually graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She is currently working on her master’s in urban studies at the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. Sow moved here from Conakry, Guinea, having previously studied computer networking and security in

Tunisia. He continued his studies at ASA College and eventually at St. Joseph College, where he currently has a 4.0 GPA in computer information technology. “Eva came to my life as a shining star in the dark,” Sow said. “When she opened the I.T’s room door, she carried my heart with it. She fills my life with joy. Meeting her was the most amazing thing that happened to me at the court."

News From Your Neighborhood CAR CRASHES INTO BED-STUY PIZZERIA

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — Police are investigating after a car crashed into a recently closed pizza shop in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Tuesday. The accident happened around 5 a.m. at the Pizza Wraps pizzeria on Fulton Street, and the car appeared to have gone all the way inside the pizzeria. The owner, Joy Lacoa, had hoped to reopen the space as a Caribbean restaurant, according to ABC7. “I started crying because that’s my livelihood, all of my savings getting taken, now I have nothing you know, and this is it,” Lacoa said. Police are working to determine what caused the driver to lose control. 

MANY QUESTIONS UNANSWERED ABOUT EAST FLATBUSH CAR CRASH

EAST FLATBUSH — A day after a fatal crash at the intersection of East 55th Street and Foster Avenue in East Flatbush, police are still searching for one of the drivers, and parents Collin and Joan Dixon are still searching for answers. Their daughter, Joanna Dixon, was a passenger in a black Mazda SUV, PIX11 reported, and was killed in the collision. The driver of the sedan, whom police say may have been intoxicated, allegedly ran a stop sign, collided with a Nissan GT-R coupe and then ran off, leaving Dixon and another woman behind. There are also questions about the sobriety of Rohan Shaw, the off-duty police officer who was behind the wheel of the Nissan. Shaw was initially charged with driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, speeding and reckless driving. But he was ultimately released pending further investigation, PIX11 said. 

COBBLE HILL CIVIC LEADERS DECRY CONSTRUCTION TRUCKS

COBBLE HILL — Cobble Hill civic leaders say that officials at the city Department of Transportation are doing a poor job providing oversight at three construction sites within the footprint of the former Long Island College Hospital, according to the Brooklyn Paper. Fortis Property Group is building two 15and 36-story towers on opposing sides of Hicks Street as part of a five-building development project known as River Park. At the same time, New York University plans to build a medical center in front of the taller tower once it acquires the land from Fortis, the Brooklyn Paper reported. Cement trucks and 18-wheelers regularly proceed onto Hicks Street, then struggle to make the turn onto Pacific Street, which leads to the worksite. 

BROOKLYN WOMAN LEFT INFANT IN SUV’S BACK SEAT

CANARSIE — A Brooklyn woman is facing an investigation after she left her 1-year-old child in the back seat of an SUV that was towed away for being illegally parked, according to amNewYork. The incident began when the unidentified woman allegedly left the baby in the back seat of the locked vehicle in the parking lot of the Bayview Houses in Canarsie. A manager with the towing company, A-Twin Towing on East 81st Street, said the company has a contract to tow vehicles with no permits from the parking lot. After the mother called the towing company to say the baby was in the back seat, workers forced open the rear door and called Emergency Medical Services. Officers from the 69th Precinct were also alerted, as well as the Administration for Children’s Services, amNewYork said. 

BROOKLYN ARTIST EATS $120,000 BANANA

MIAMI — Brooklyn artist David Datuna said he has “no regrets” about eating a banana that was part of a $120,000 art installation in Miami Beach, according to Patch. The banana, part of a work by artist Maurizio Cattelan called “Comedian,” was duct-taped to the Emmanual Perrotin Gallery’s outer wall. It sold for $120,000 to an art collector, Patch said. The banana was replaced with another one donated by a spectator. Police declined to arrest Datuna. 

ADAMS DEPLOYS CAMERAS ALONG NOSTRAND AVENUE

CROWN HEIGHTS — Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams recently joined the Nostrand Avenue Merchants Association, the 71st Precinct and elected officials to announce the expansion of Operation Safe Shopper, a program under which security cameras have been deployed outside local businesses with the help of the NYPD. The latest installation is along a stretch of Nostrand Avenue running from south Crown Heights to Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. The improvement comes as the holiday shopping season begins and foot traffic increases along major commercial corridors throughout Brooklyn, including Nostrand Avenue. “In the three years since we started Operation Safe Shopper, we have heard numerous success stories, and we look forward to creating a safer, more vibrant Nostrand Avenue with the expansion of this program,” said Adams.

More than 1,000 mourners streamed onto a Williamsburg street Wednesday evening to pay their final respects to two of the civilian victims of the Jersey City shooting. The crowd carried the bodies of the dead through the street before they were taken to their final resting places in the town of Kiryas Joel. Eagle photo by Paul Frangipane 

NADLER INTRODUCES BILL TO HELP CO-OPS, CONDOS

BOROUGHWIDE — U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Brooklyn-Manhattan) and several other congresspersons from both sides of the political aisle have introduced H.R. 5337, the Disaster Assistance Equity Act. The legislation is designed to ensure that owners of co-ops and condos are eligible for the same FEMA assistance available to other homeowners. The law makes essential common elements of a common interest community (such as a roof, exterior wall, heating and cooling equipment, elevator, stairwell, utility access, plumbing and electricity) eligible under FEMA’s Federal Assistance to Individuals and Households Program. It also makes common interest communities eligible under FEMA’s requirements for the removal of debris in the aftermath of a major disaster. 

NEW RESTAURANT COMING TO DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Restaurant operator American Standard Hospitality Group has leased two floors at 519 Fulton St. in Downtown Brooklyn for a new restaurant, according to the Commercial Observer. The hospitality firm hasn’t decided what kind of restaurant will occupy the space, which is owned by Thor Equities. However, it has several other restaurants in Brooklyn, including the Caribbean-flavored Woodland in Park Slope, Imani Caribbean Kitchen and Bar in Fort Greene and pizza spot Forno Rosso in Downtown Brooklyn. Thor owner Joe Sitt said American Standard was attracted to the build-

ing because “the property features unmatched visibility with over 100 feet of wrap-around frontage and serves as an excellent addition to their impressive portfolio.” 

‘NEIGHBORHOODS TO WATCH’ IN BROOKLYN

BOROUGHWIDE — Nicole Wu, economist for the real estate website StreetEasy, has predictions for the New York City real estate market for the upcoming year, according to CBS New York. Of her 10 neighborhoods to watch next year, six are in Brooklyn: Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Midwood, East Flatbush, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and Crown Heights. She also said that the Brooklyn Navy Yard is expected to become more of a destination next year as more large firms move in. 

WOMAN KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED IN A-TRAIN MISHAP

EAST NEW YORK — One woman was killed and another injured after they both fell onto the tracks early Sunday morning from the A train platform at the Broadway Junction station. The first woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition, according to Gothamist. Police said the two women were walking arm in arm near the platform’s edge when one of them stumbled and fell in between two train cars. They were both reported to be visibly intoxicated at the time. People tried to bang on the train to get it to stop, but it was too late, Gothamist reported. 

HUGE BATTERY PROVIDES POWER IN EAST NEW YORK

EAST NEW YORK — A huge battery has been quietly powering part of eastern Brooklyn’s power grid, according to Bloomberg News. The 4.8-megwatt device — the biggest battery in New York City — sits beside the Gateway Center mall in East New York and has been quietly running for months at the borough’s edge, according to a joint statement yesterday from the property owner, Related Cos., and the Italian tech firm that installed it, Enel SpA. More huge batteries are on the way, Bloomberg says. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has a goal to install 3,000 megawatts of storage by 2030 as part of an effort to curb reliance on fossil fuels. The battery at the Gateway Center mall can supply 16.4 megawatt-hours of electricity.

Frank Seddio hosts annual holiday house-lighting ceremony Frank Seddio and Henry Bolus.

Judge Mark Partnow and family. BY JOHN ALEXANDER JALEXANDER@BROOKLYNEAGLE. COM

K

ings County Democratic Chairperson F ra n k S e d d io held his much-anticipated house-lighting extravaganza on Friday, Dec. 6. Each year, Seddio invites family, friends, elected officials, community leaders, area residents and children of all ages to attend this festive event. The annual block long “block party” took place at Seddio’s law office at 9306 Flatlands Ave. Hundreds of people came to enjoy the winter wonderland that featured a live nativity scene with animals. There was a special guest appearance by Santa Claus, who was there to greet all the children. Those attending enjoyed Christmas carols sung by the Holy Family Church choir and students from P.S. 115. Seddio has been participating in the event and dressing up as Santa Claus since the 1960s and has been hosting it himself for the

past 33 years. “I love doing this,” Seddio told this paper. “This is my favorite thing in the whole world that I’ve done in my life. I’ve always considered this more like a vocation to me than anything else. It just means so much to me among all the things that I’ve been able to do in my life. It’s like the culmination of giving and that’s what I love most about it.” Seddio said that the greatest feeling was seeing the joy on the children’s faces when they come up to him. “What could be better than seeing the happy faces of the children! If that doesn’t make you happy, then I don’t know what will. It’s the absolute best,” he added. Every year, the display is dedicated to the memory of a local resident who has died. This year’s holiday display was dedicated to the memory of Josephine Bolus, the late wife of civic leader Henry Bolus, president of the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, and a longtime activist in her own right. “My wife passed away on

Santa with Bryston Bristol. July 25 of this year. We were married for 65 years,” said Bolus. “She was a member of many, many community organizations over the years, and she was truly a wonderful person.” Elected officials and civic leaders attending included

Santa with Jacob and Isabella Cruz. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli; Attorney General Letitia James; City Councilmember Brad Lander; Judge Mark Partnow and his wife Sue Ann Partnow, who serves as the female leader of the 59th Assembly District; Federation of

Alora Calistia and Jackson Copper with Santa.

Italian American Organizations President Jack Spatola; FIAO Brooklyn Director of External Affairs Joseph Rizzi; Judge Katherine Levine and Deputy Inspector Terrell Anderson, the commanding officer of Canarsie’s 69th Precinct.

“Frank and I go back 40 some odd years and I love coming to this event. If you look around at all the Merry Christmas signs and the way it’s all set up, it’s just truly amazing and inspirational,” Bolus stressed.

Part One: See historic homes in Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy On a walk down Gates Avenue, you can see a nice slice of Central Brooklyn brownstones and rowhouses.

INBrooklyn photos by Lore Croghan

By Lore Croghan INBrooklyn

Central Brooklyn’s 19th- and early 20th-century rowhouses are a thing of beauty. Gates Avenue offers you glimpses of some very fine ones indeed, in Clinton Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant. If you keep walking, before you know it, this avenue will also take you across Bushwick to the Queens border.

The avenue, which was In a New York minute, named after American Revoyou’ll walk past the Royal lutionary War General HoraCastle Apartments. tio Gates, is walkable in a This six-story, red-brick day if you aren’t obsessively apartment complex at 20-30 photographing the handsome Gates Ave., aka 470-476 homes and churches. The designation report offers an interesting random fact about German-born architect Deitrich Wortmann. He was a member of the U.S. wrestling team at the 1904 Olympics. Gates Avenue begins at the intersection of Fulton Street and Clermont Avenue in Clinton Hill. When you look west on Fulton Street, you can see some of Downtown Brooklyn’s high-rise towers in the distance. When you face east, a small public space called Gateway Triangle is in your immediate line of sight. The first cross street you arrive at is Vanderbilt Avenue. This part of the neighborhood is not included in the Clinton Hill Historic District. But there are handsome brownstones and carriage houses here.

THE GOLD COAST

As you stand on the Gates Avenue corner of Clinton Avenue, take a minute to look up and down the street. It’s one that you should come back to for a separate stroll. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wealthy Brooklynites considered Clinton Avenue a hot spot to construct their mansions. Everybody called it the Gold Coast.

— Continued from page 16INB — They were following the example of Charles Pratt, the philanthropist who made a fortune in oil and founded nearby Pratt Institute. He built houses on this street as wedding gifts for his sons. The one at 229 Clinton Ave. is now used as a home for Pratt Institute’s president. On the Gates Avenue corner where you’re standing, you can see a magnificent pair of limestone mansions built in 1902 — 463 and 465 Clinton Ave. An architect named Mercein Thomas designed them in 1902. The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the Clinton Hill Historic District says the original owner of Beaux-Arts-style 463 Clinton Ave. was Morgan Bogart. His son, a surgeon named Dr. J. Bion Bogart, was the first person to live in the house. The original owner of neo-Italian Renaissance-style 465 Clinton Ave. was William Berri, the designation report says. He was the owner of a newspaper called the Brooklyn Standard Union and a prominent Republican leader. He was a member of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York, his 1917 New York Times obituary says.

This dour fellow can be found on the facade of the Royal Castle Apartments.

AN 1860S CHURCH

As you continue on Gates Avenue, you leave Clinton Avenue’s mansions behind and see lovely brick and brownstone rowhouses and a couple eye-catching churches. For starters, there are lovely neo-Grec brownstones with mansard roofs on the corner of Waverly Avenue at 63 to 69 Gates Ave. An architect-builder named Joseph Kirby constructed them in 1880 for a grain merchant named Stephen R. Post, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. The next Gates Avenue corner, which is Washington Avenue, is graced by elegant, red-brick Brown Memorial Baptist Church, whose congregation was established in 1916. The congregation won grants from Partners in Preservation and the New York Landmarks Conservancy for the restoration of a Tiffany stained-glass window called “The Pilgrims,” which it completed in December 2014, the church’s website says. The building, whose address is 484 Washington Ave., was constructed in 1860. Its architectural style is early Romanesque Revival, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. The architect was Ebenezer L. Roberts. The congregation that built and originally occupied it was the Washington Avenue Baptist Church, the designation report says.

Limestone mansions 463 (left) and 465 Clinton Ave. stand on the corner of Gates Avenue. The Italianate brick rowhouse on this corner, whose address is 129 Gates Ave., has a storefront on its ground floor that was a drugstore back in the day. The current occupant is Locanda Vini E Olii — a restaurant that Michelin Guide 2020 calls a “jewel.” The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the historic district says Samuel Asman designed 129 Gates Ave. in 1877 for John Bahrenburg. The Italianate rowhouses next to it, from 131 through 143 Gates Ave., were constructed by a builder and lumber dealer named Jeremiah Johnson around 1864. A mansard roof was added to 131 Gates Ave. in the late 19th century and a new brick facade was added in the 1930s, the designation report says. At the intersection of Gates and Grand avenues, you’ll find the Vendome, a property with big historic significance. It’s Brooklyn’s oldest multi-family apartment building. Its address is 363 Grand Ave. An architect named Halstead Fowler designed the Vendome in 1887, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report says. It’s a Romanesque Revival-Queen Anne-style building. A plaque on the side of the property says it was threatened with demolition in 1987 but saved by neighborhood residents led by the late Ralph Walter.

TWO LOVELY CHURCHES

As you continue your stroll, you will walk through a few Clinton Hill blocks that aren’t included in the neighborhood’s historic district. One of the most eye-catching sights on these blocks is Mount Zion Tabernacle at 182 Gates Ave. on the corner of Irving Place. The church has a beautiful old-fashioned spire. When you cross Classon Avenue, you’re in BedfordStuyvesant. This boundary has been the subject of some debate over the past decade or so. There are no official government-designated boundaries for New York City neighborhoods. But Kenneth Jackson and John Manbeck’s book “The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn” says Classon Avenue is the dividing line between Clinton Hill and BedStuy, and that’s what I’m going with. By the way, there are handsome rowhouses on Classon Av-

enue at this Gates Avenue intersection. As you keep walking, you’ll notice a cluster of Romanesque Revival rowhouses on the south side of Gates Avenue near the corner of Franklin Avenue. On the north side of this block, the bright white facades of Mount Sinai Baptist Church at 241 Gates Ave. and adjacent homes at 247 through 253 Gates Ave. glow with a serene, almost otherworldly light when the sun is shining. The Baptist congregation has owned the church building since the 1950s, Finance Department records indicate.

THE DOE FUND

As you continue into Bed-Stuy, you pass eye-pleasing rowhouses. At the corner of Nostrand Avenue, there’s an old-fashioned apartment building called Norgate Plaza. This building has affordable units for low-income tenants, online postings indicate. Its address is 390 Nostrand Ave. St. George’s Episcopal Church, which is an individual city landmark, is on the corner of Gates and Marcy avenues. Worship services were first held there in 1888, the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s designation report about the church says. The designer of the Victorian Gothic-style church at 800 Marcy Ave. was Richard Michell Upjohn. He and his father Richard Upjohn are best known in Brooklyn for their design of the main gates of Green-Wood Cemetery. On the Gates Avenue block between Marcy and Tompkins avenues, you’ll see a big four-story building that’s a Doe Fund facility. The Doe Fund is a nonprofit George and Harriet McDonald created in 1990 to assist homeless New Yorkers by providing occupational training, jobs, transitional housing, education and social services. This is the end of my first Gates Avenue stroll. The shadows are lengthening and it’s getting hard to take good photos. At a moment like this, when what I most need in life is caffeine, I head for Brooklyn Tea at 524 Nostrand Ave. It’s one of many excellent spots to get a bite to eat in Bed-Stuy.

RENOVATION PROJECTS, PAST AND PRESENT

The intersection of Gates and Washington avenues is another fine spot to pause and take in the scenery. The red-painted, brick multi-family building with squareheaded window bays at 461 Washington Ave. is especially eyecatching. Amzi Hill, one of Brooklyn’s distinguished 19th-century architects, designed the four-story building, the designation report says. In 1981, when the designation report was published, this property was abandoned. It has since been renovated and divided into four condos. One of them sold this year for $1.9 million, city Finance Department records indicate. Nearby, on the corner of St. James Place, a renovation project is nearing completion. The address of the Italianate rowhouse is 109 Gates Ave. It has gleaming glass storefronts on its first and second floors which are similar to storefronts that were added to the building in the early 20th century. A builder named John Funk constructed 109 Gates Ave. and the rowhouses beside it in the 1860s, the Clinton Hill Historic District designation report indicates.

BROOKLYN’S FIRST APARTMENT BUILDING

Another important Gates Avenue intersection in the Clinton Hill Historic District is the one at Cambridge Place.

This is historic Brown Memorial Baptist Church.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Dec. 11, 1941

ON DEC. 11, 1893, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Throngs of shoppers are visiting the dry-goods establishment of Bloomingdale Bros., Third avenue and Fifty-ninth street, New York, to take advantage of the big book sale. Thousands of volumes of fine books were bought of Charles E. Gould, the receiver for the United States Book company, the International Book company, the Horendon Book company and for Lovell, Coryell & Co., in anticipation of the holiday season. These enormous stocks were obtained in some instances at less than the cost of the paper. This is doubtless the greatest sale of books for years, whole volumes of standard works selling in many cases for less than $1. The stock comprises books worthy of any library, such as Cooper, Irving, Byron, Scott, Dickens, Thackeray, Hawthorne and Macauley. Among the French writers are Dumas and Sand. Many of the books are nicely bound in cloth and gold.”  ON DEC. 11, 1921, the Eagle reported, “Washington (AP) — A new quadruple agreement to preserve peace in the waters of the Pacific was announced to the world today by the United States, Great Britain, Japan and France. As a consideration of the international realignment, Great Britain and Japan agreed to consign to the scrap heap the Anglo-Japanese alliance, long viewed with appreciation in both America and Asia. The provisions of the agreement, which is in the form of a ten-year treaty, are confined to the ‘region of the Pacific Ocean.’ Under them, the Powers are to respect each other’s island possessions and to meet in consultation if a dispute arises or if the rights of any of the four are threatened by any other Power.”  ON DEC. 11, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Washington (UP) — Germany and Italy went to war against the United States today, and Congress prepared for immediate action on an impending request by President Roosevelt for a resolution formally recognizing existence of hostilities. The official German war declaration was delivered to the State Department at 9:25 a.m., while the Italian war notice was handed to the American charge d’affaires in Rome by Count Galeazzo Ciano, Italian Foreign Minister. The action completed the Axis cycle of aligning its full military and naval forces against the United States, following by four days Japan’s assault on this nation’s Pacific strongholds. The greatest war in the world’s history became a full reality for an America which for months has been on a basis of undeclared shooting with Germany and Italy. Members of Congress pledged full support to the President in the extension of the war and said it might last for years.”  ON THIS DAY IN 1954, the Eagle reported, “Indiana, Pa. (U.P.) — Jimmy Stewart, film actor, plays a ‘supporting’ role today at the wedding of his 82-year-old father to a Canadian widow in a home-town ceremony before about 40 friends. The lanky cinema star plans to be best man for his octogenarian father, Alexander Stewart, a widower who owns and operates the town’s hardware store. Stewart, a life-long resident of this small western Pennsylvania mountain community, will wed Mrs. J.J. Stothart of St. James, New Brunswick, at the home of Mrs. Robert Dingman, a next-door neighbor, and a niece of the bride-to-be. The elder Stewart was reported by his family to be ‘bursting with excitement’ over the impending ceremony. His famous son arrived after an overnight train ride from New York, accompanied by his wife, former model Gloria McLean. Stewart was first married in 1906 to Elizabeth Ruth Stewart, Jimmy’s mother. She was the daughter of a Civil War veteran and steel company founder. She died here Aug. 2, 1953.”

Brooklyn Daily Eagle cover from Dec. 12, 1941

ON DEC. 12, 1859, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The ship Henrietta, which arrived here on Saturday evening from Leghorn, has on board a very small horse. It is a stallion, of a clear jet black, perfect in shape, with black mane and tail, and is about 7 hands high. During the voyage he has had the run of the ship like any ordinary dog.”  ON DEC. 12, 1861, the Eagle published a letter which read: “Some near and dear relatives of mine crossed the Atlantic and went to London expressly to hear the Oratorio of the Messiah performed by three thousand artists and they tell me that the performance of the glorious Hallelujah Chorus alone repaid them for their trouble and expense. Imagine, dear Mr. Editor, three thousand singers in the ‘King of Kings’ and ‘Lord of Lords’ and ‘He shall reign forever Hallelujah,’ in this great chorus of Handel! This is an age of improvement. Perhaps this time next year under the auspices and influences mentioned, we may hear with delight the grand chorus of the Messiah, the Creation and the Elijah artistically performed by young men and maidens of Brooklyn.”  ON DEC. 12, 1930, the Eagle reported, “Washington (AP) — Twelve thousand tons of granite have been blasted from the stony heart of the Black Hills to make place for a portrait of George Washington. Gutzon Borglum, famous sculptor in charge, has watched with satisfaction the progress being made on the Mouth Rushmore Memorial in South Dakota. So pleased, in turn, was the commission supervising the project that it used Borglum’s poetic words today in its second annual report to Congress. The sculptor had called the job a cool-headed setting down of ‘a few epochal facts regarding the accomplishments of Old World radicals, who shook the shackles of oppression from their light feet and fled despotism to people a continent; who built an empire and rewrote the philosophy of freedom, and compelled the world to accept its wiser, happier forms of government.” Nick Clifford, the last known survivor of the workers who carved Mount Rushmore, died on Nov. 23, 2019. He was 98.  ON DEC. 12, 1941, the Eagle reported, “Manila (UP) — Three daredevil American aviators flew to fame — and one to death — today against the Japanese. Terse statements from military and naval sources in Manila told the story of how American and Filipino aviators struck back against powerful enemy assaults. The name of 26-year-old Capt. Colin Kelly Jr. of Florida, who was killed in action, heads the roll of heroes.” It was also reported, “The metropolitan area went about its normal business today, the people calm and resolute in the face of total Axis warfare, but behind the scenes plans materialized for the evacuation of women and children, the aged and disabled from congested areas in the event of air raids.”  ON DEC. 12, 1952, the Eagle reported, “London (U.P.) — A Congregationalist minister criticized the Royal Family today for giving a toy gun recently to four-year-old Prince Charles, heir to the British throne. The Rev. Hubert Oliver wrote in a church magazine: ‘The Royal Family usually sets us such a good example, but I am amazed by this gift.’”

BROOKLYN'S BEST GUIDE

Boro dept. stores outsell Manhattan TO GOODS , SERVICES & EMPLOYMENT BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE DEC. 12. 1946

With an approximate 42 percent increase in dollar volume over last year’s Christmas sales, officials of three downtown department stores agreed today that “we are doing better than Manhattan stores. The present pre-Yule buying boom got underway the first week of December, when customers mobbed the stores, fearing that supplies would be limited because of the coal strike, according to a survey among buyers conducted by the Brooklyn Eagle. Along with a run on luxury and non-essential buying, customers this year were intent on buying hundreds of items available in limited quantities for the first time in five years.

Buyers pointed out that the stores were trying to hold the OPA ceilings, with “slight increases in articles on which production costs have been raised. The executives of Loeser’s, the Namm and Abraham & Straus based their claim that Brooklyn is topping Manhattan on a report released by a large Manhattan department store recently, indicating that its sales had gone up 25 percent on a “typical day, as compared to last year. Announcing that on that same day sales showed an increase of 40 percent at Abraham & Straus, William Tobey, sales promotion manager, asserted that “we are doing better than the New York stores because the shopping public finds more assortment in the Brooklyn stores.
