Students from UNCF-member institutions packed the Sheraton Hotel and Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis for four days of lively workshops and luncheons, including the annual Corporate Luncheon, sponsored this year by FedEx. Ms. Regina Johnson, a sophomore from Memphis, represented the Bearcats as Miss Rust College UNCF. Regina graciously stepped in for Ms. Nicole Matthews, who won the title, but was unable to attend the conference.

Students were able to speak candidly with financial aid representatives, graduate and professional school recruiters, as well as some job recruiters. The young ladies received a basic self-defense class, taught by instructors with Divas in Defense, a self-defense corporation begun by two brothers who witnessed domestic violence firsthand while growing up.

Rust College, along with administrators, alumni, and staff members of Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, and Philander Smith College, had the pleasure to serve as a Local Host School for the UNCF 68th National Alumni Council/56th National Pre-Alumni Council Leadership Conference held February 12-16 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Rust College was represented musically by the World Renowned A’Cappella Choir, who wowed the audience during the Corporate Luncheon, and by student Rodney Kurirai Matonga, who performed a self-composed Rodney Matonga performed ballad and played guitar at the Opening Reception. for the Opening Reception.

Class of 2013 graduate and former Student Government Association president Chase Carr was honored for his nomination by Rust College as an Outstanding Young Alumnus. Dr. David L. Beckley was recognized with other college presidents in attendance, including Dr. Johnnie B. Watson, president of LeMoyne-Owen College, Dr. Beverly Wade Hogan, president of Tougaloo College, and several others.

Rust College Students Take the Bloomberg Aptitude Test Ten Rust College students completed the Bloomberg Aptitude Test on Monday, February 10th, under the guidance of Rust College Bloomberg for Education Coordinator Marjorie Sise, Rust College Assistant Librarian Dr. Renee Hooper and Bloomberg test proctor David Blackmarr. The Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT) is a two-hour test of students’ aptitude to work in business. It is used by employers in the business world to evaluate prospective employment candidates. The exam measures an individual’s ability to critically think on topics such as finance. Results from the test are used to measure the student’s level of readiness for business career-related fields. The exam is administered in 58 countries on university campuses, and reaches out to employers on a global scale. (bloomberginstitute.com).

...YE SHALL KNOW THEM” Rust College Junior Named HBCU All-Star All-Stars Named as Part of White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Rust College junior Larance Carter was recently recognized as an HBCU All-Star, as part of the Initiative White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (WHIHBCU). 75 undergraduate, graduate and professional students from 62 HBCUs around the country were named as part of this first class of All-Stars.

Larance Carter, a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi was one of five students recognized from the state of Mississippi. Larance is a Social Work major who also serves as a Resident Assistant at Rust College. He is the president of the Student Ministry Fellowship, the E.A. Smith Honors Society, and the Junior Class Treasurer. Larance was also recently nominated by the chair of the Division of Social Science to the 2014 class of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He was featured in the 2013-2014 edition of “NEXT: A Guide to Life After High School, a college guide by the Mississippi Business Journal.

“It is a privilege to announce these 75 students who have demonstrated a commitment to both their own academic achievement and making a difference in their communities, and we look forward to working with them as partners in advancing President Obama’s college completion goal,” said George Cooper, Executive Director of the WHIHBCUs.

Over the course of the next year, the HBCU All-Stars will serve as ambassadors of the White House Initiative by provide outreach and communication with their fellow students about the value of education and the Initiative as a networking resource.

Through social media and their relationships with community-based organizations, the All-Stars will share promising and proven practices that support opportunities for all young people to achieve their educational and career potential. In addition, the 45 female and 30 male All-Stars will participate in regional events and web chats with Ivory Toldson, deputy director of the WHIHBCUs, other Initiative staff and professionals from a wide range of disciplines. They will also have opportunities to engage with other scholars to showcase individual and collective talent across the HBCU community.

Financial Aid Awareness Week ~ “Know Before You Owe” Submitted by Nicole LaRue

For it to have been “Dead Week” at Rust College (the period in which no activities are held to allow students to prepare for their finals), the campus was buzzing with information. On Monday, February 24, the Financial Aid Office kicked the week off with their annual Financial Aid Awareness Week with their “Know Before You Owe” theme. The whole week was dedicated to helping students understand the importance of their financial aid and the loan process.

“Each year the month of February is set aside by most schools for financial aid awareness. We chose the last week in February and we want to try to keep the students engaged and informed about the different processes [of financial aid] and answer any questions they may have,” said Mrs. Helen Street, Financial Aid Director. “We also try to encourage students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming year.”

While America’s athletes are going for the gold in Sochi, our Rust College students were competing on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in trials for the “Olympics of the mind,” Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a knowledge game of quick recall for America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Now in its 25th year, more than $7 million dollars in grants have been awarded by Honda to participating HBCUs and nearly 100,000 students in 22 states have participated.

Students Aaliyah S. Travis, Janicia S. Mitchell, Atiyah M. Reed, Melanie Denise Stuckey and their coach Dr. Hilda Booker Williams, Assistant Professor of English are representing us at the National Qualifying Tournament at Alabama State Univ. in Montgomery, AL. 48 teams from the qualifying tournaments will advance to the Pictured above (l-r): Aaliyah Travis, Melanie Stuckey, National Championship Tournament at Honda’s Torrance, California headquarters. Over $300,000 is at stake this year, with the champion HBCU earning a $50,000 grant. The 48-team field was be announced on February 20th via a live webcast.

Students were able to receive financial aid information during lunch and dinner during Financial Aid Awareness Week.

On Tuesday, February 25, the Financial Aid Office held a “Chat and Chew” in the Rust College Recreational Center, giving students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with financial aid staff. Students were also able to ask questions of any concerns while being served a light snack.

“Honda would like to wish good luck to all the HCASC teams attempting to qualify for the National Championship tournament this weekend. The journey started at the beginning of the school year and has included long hours of hard work, practice and study, in addition to your regular academic course load.
