Students from UNCF-member institutions packed the Sheraton Hotel and Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis for four days of lively workshops and luncheons, including the annual Corporate Luncheon, sponsored this year by FedEx. Ms. Regina Johnson, a sophomore from Memphis, represented the Bearcats as Miss Rust College UNCF. Regina graciously stepped in for Ms. Nicole Matthews, who won the title, but was unable to attend the conference.

Students were able to speak candidly with financial aid representatives, graduate and professional school recruiters, as well as some job recruiters. The young ladies received a basic self-defense class, taught by instructors with Divas in Defense, a self-defense corporation begun by two brothers who witnessed domestic violence firsthand while growing up.

Rust College, along with administrators, alumni, and staff members of Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, and Philander Smith College, had the pleasure to serve as a Local Host School for the UNCF 68th National Alumni Council/56th National Pre-Alumni Council Leadership Conference held February 12-16 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Rust College was represented musically by the World Renowned A’Cappella Choir, who wowed the audience during the Corporate Luncheon, and by student Rodney Kurirai Matonga, who performed a self-composed Rodney Matonga performed ballad and played guitar at the Opening Reception. for the Opening Reception.

Class of 2013 graduate and former Student Government Association president Chase Carr was honored for his nomination by Rust College as an Outstanding Young Alumnus. Dr. David L. Beckley was recognized with other college presidents in attendance, including Dr. Johnnie B. Watson, president of LeMoyne-Owen College, Dr. Beverly Wade Hogan, president of Tougaloo College, and several others.
