Students to Participate in UNCF/Mellon Summer Institute Two Rust College English majors will participate in the UNCF/Mellon Summer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia beginning June 1, 2013. Joshua Stampley-Gardner and Naomi Rahn were selected for UNCF/Mellon Undergraduate Fellowships based on application materials demonstrating outstanding academic achievements, and their potential to become professors and scholars at the college and university levels. Joshua and Naomi will each receive stipends and funding to support preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). As Mellon Mays Fellows, they will be connected to a wide variety of programs that will assist them in their development as scholars and with their graduate school applications. Dr. Alisea McLeod and Dr. Sharron Sarthou will serve as mentors for Joshua and Naomi, respectively. Social Work Department Receives Accreditation Reaffirmation The Council on Social Work Education Commission on Accreditation reviewed the reaffirmation application for the baccalaureate social work program of Rust College during its February 2013 meeting. The Commission on Accreditation (COA) voted to reaffirm the program’s accreditation for eight years, with a progress report to be reviewed by the COA. Congratulations to the Social Work Department, led by Dr. Gemma Beckley, Program Director.

Faculty Member Made Honoree, Recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Submitted by Hope Green During the 81st Southeastern Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Dr. A.J. Stovall, Chair of the Division of Social Science, was recognized for his efforts in the community. The Theta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated elected to honor Dr. Stovall during their sorority’s public honoree meeting. “Due to Dr. Stovall’s tireless efforts and accomplishments with human rights and social justice, we could not see any other faculty member better fit to be honored,” stated Theta Upsilon President Hope Green. The meeting was held in Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 2013 at the Cook Convention Center. Also recognized during the meeting was Mississippi State Representative and Rust College alumnus Kelvin O. Buck, ‘97.
