Students to Participate in UNCF/Mellon Summer Institute Two Rust College English majors will participate in the UNCF/Mellon Summer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia beginning June 1, 2013. Joshua Stampley-Gardner and Naomi Rahn were selected for UNCF/Mellon Undergraduate Fellowships based on application materials demonstrating outstanding academic achievements, and their potential to become professors and scholars at the college and university levels. Joshua and Naomi will each receive stipends and funding to support preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). As Mellon Mays Fellows, they will be connected to a wide variety of programs that will assist them in their development as scholars and with their graduate school applications. Dr. Alisea McLeod and Dr. Sharron Sarthou will serve as mentors for Joshua and Naomi, respectively. Social Work Department Receives Accreditation Reaffirmation The Council on Social Work Education Commission on Accreditation reviewed the reaffirmation application for the baccalaureate social work program of Rust College during its February 2013 meeting. The Commission on Accreditation (COA) voted to reaffirm the program’s accreditation for eight years, with a progress report to be reviewed by the COA. Congratulations to the Social Work Department, led by Dr. Gemma Beckley, Program Director.

Faculty Member Made Honoree, Recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Submitted by Hope Green During the 81st Southeastern Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Dr. A.J. Stovall, Chair of the Division of Social Science, was recognized for his efforts in the community. The Theta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated elected to honor Dr. Stovall during their sorority’s public honoree meeting. “Due to Dr. Stovall’s tireless efforts and accomplishments with human rights and social justice, we could not see any other faculty member better fit to be honored,” stated Theta Upsilon President Hope Green. The meeting was held in Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 2013 at the Cook Convention Center. Also recognized during the meeting was Mississippi State Representative and Rust College alumnus Kelvin O. Buck, ‘97.

Rust College Student Wows JSU Instructors Submitted by Hope Green
Four Rust College Students—Roosevelt Ford, SGA President Chase Carr, Tineka Barber, and Hope Green— attended “Black History Makers: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Medgar Wiley Evers” on the campus of Jackson State University, on Wednesday, February 20th. Dr. Michael Vinson Williams, author of Medgar Evers: Mississippi Martyr, gave a presentation on civil rights activist Medgar Evers. After Dr. Williams' presentation, students including Rust College’s Tineka Barber, gave their own paper presentations. Ms. Barber’s paper was entitled, “Electoral Politics and Race: The Election of Eddie L. Smith as Mayor of Holly Springs, MS: 1985-1989”. At the conclusion of Ms. Barber’s presentation, she was greeted and praised by many Jackson State instructors. Dr. Marco Robinson, Associate Professor of History and Jackson State alumnus stated, “This event provided my students with the opportunity to present their research and seek out opportunities for graduate study. Most importantly, this was a chance for them to hone their professional skills and network. I believe that it is very important for faculty and staff to help build bridges for students to reach their professional goals.”

2013 Minority Institution Research Support (MIRS) Program Are you teaching in the areas of biology, chemistry, paleontology, geology, atmospheric physics, planetary science, astrophysics or cosmology? Are you interested in conducting research in which these science areas can be combined? Then the MIRS program may be for you. The MIRS Astrobiology program provides opportunities for researchers at minority serving institutions (MSIs) to collaborate with Astrobiology Program research teams through the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI). Established in 1998, the NAI was formed as an innovative way to develop the field of astrobiology and to provide a scientific framework for flight missions. With 15 teams of over 180 institutions and international partners, we’re confident you’ll be able to align your research with one of the researchers associated with an NAI team. The program provides funding for salary, housing and travel during the summer, and additional funding to continue the research at your campus during the academic year with the intention that you’ll share your research and experiences in the summer program with your students. The goals of the program are to strengthen the infrastructure of astrobiology research at MSIs, increase diversity of Astrobiology Program activities and to ensure that the next generation of astrobiologists reflect the diversity of the US and international scientific communities. Components of the MIRS Program • Year-round opportunities for research and collaboration with astrobiologists in the U.S. • 10 weeks of support with a stipend of $1000 per week during the summer • Housing and travel stipend of $5,000 • A stipend of $10,000 for continuation of the summer research experience during the academic year to develop astrobiology curriculum and laboratories at the institutions • Participation in an Astrobiology Cluster/Interest Group at the conclusion of the summer sabbatical to collaborate with other MIRS researchers, obtain additional funding and to expand research options Eligibility Requirements • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident • Full-time faculty at a US Minority Serving Institution as designated by the U.S. Department of Education • Ability to provide a commitment letter from the faculty’s institution stating interest in the astrobiology curriculum • Qualified to conduct astrobiology-related research at both the host institution/laboratory and the home institution To explore this opportunity further or to apply for the program, please visit www.uncfsp.org/NAP-MIRS or contact Dr. Jacquelyn Y. Rust Alumnae Establishes Frances A. Hathorne Inspirational Scholarship Rust graduate Cindricka L. Arrington has established an annual scholarship eligible for Rust College sophomores, juniors and seniors, in the name of Rustite Mrs. Frances Allen Hathorne.

“Mrs. Frances A. Hathorne was a model woman of class and positivity. As an undergraduate at Rust College, she impressed upon me the qualities to be a finer woman and to contribute to others by giving of my time as well as tangible resources,” said Ms. Arrington. “Her legacy as a life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., wife, mother, grandmother, and active community leader has inspired me to heights of excellence, as well as a desire to help give others the same opportunity. This scholarship’s goal is to assist a young person from a single parent home in his/her educational pursuits by defraying tuition or non-tuition costs such as gas, supplemental study aids, or personal expenses.”
CRITERIA: a. Must be a matriculating student with sophomore to senior status at Rust College b. Must be a product of a single parent home c. Write an essay of 500 to 800 words of who or what inspires you and why. List your goals and how receiving this scholarship will help to meet them. d. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA e. Must be a professed Christian who believes in the trinity- God the Father, Jesus the Son, Lord & Savior, and the Holy Spirit f. Must provide proof of active church membership g.
