Interview with Don Crotsley.

NunSlaughter are one of the remaining Metal bands in America. Andrew Stanton talked to Don of the Dead about the current American scene.

Hello and welcome to Inside the Darkness.

Thank you for the interview.

- Can you tell our readers a bit about your history, please?

To be in depth would be a very long story. The short of it is….NunSlaughter started in 1987 with 3 guys that wanted to make Death Metal in Pittsburgh PA, USA. It was just a passion that drove us to create blasphemous metal and since then NunSlaughter has never stopped. One of the longest continuous running death metal bands in the world. We have over 150 releases and have traveled to 29 countries to deliver our brand of Devil Metal.

- What bands did you like growing up?

I began by listening to my parents records which was mainly Motown (from my dad) and 50’s Do Wop (from my mom). Once I heard Kiss, I knew that Metal music was for me. My favorite underground music was Slaughter, Death/ Massacre, Necrophagia, Sick From Hate, Matricide, Venom and Hellhammer. This music is what NunSlaughter has continued to draw on to make music.

- Why do some bands get bigger while others stay underground? Is it just a question of luck?

I would say some luck, some talent and some desire. We never wanted to make a full length album so we avoided it for almost 13 years. We never wanted to perform live so we avoided it for almost 15 years. So on and so forth. We make music for ourselves. If others dig it that’s great.

- What do you think of Black Metal?

I can say I am a huge fan of early Black Metal like Bathory but not much of a listener of new Black Metal bands. It seems watered down with keyboards and extraneous elements that just clutter the music rather than add to it.

- What good bands are in America these days?

Many excellent bands in the USA. Moulder, Centenary, Blood Tusk, Midnight. Too many to mention. Unfortunately, the underground has too many bands and not enough fans, as a good friend told me once.

- Why do so many people avoid Satanic bands?

I have no idea. Satanic bands are what I mainly listen to. People like different subjects but I tend to hate Christ and what his stupid image stands for and how religion, all religions, oppress people.

- What is the Metal scene like in Pittsburgh?

Not very familiar with the Pittsburgh music scene. I have not lived there in 30 years but I am sure it is thriving.

- Did you never want to go South and join the Florida scene?

Absolutely not.

- What can fans expect from your new album?

The new album has a few songs that were written with our drummer, Jim, who died a few years ago. About half the album are new tracks written with the current members of the band. I think this LP is a bit faster than our last one and definitely more aggressive sounding.

- Do you have a message for our readers?

Metal is Death Death is Metal NunSlaughter Death Metal.
