Kota Kinabalu
Kota Kinabalu, formerly known as Jesselton, is the city capital of Sabah as well as the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. Strategically situated in the Northwest Coast of Borneo Island, facing the South China Sea and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park on one side, and set against the backdrop of Mount Kinabalu; this beautiful ‘Nature Resort City’ stretches for miles along the coast and towards the inland. Affectionately known as KK or Api Api by the locals, Kota Kinabalu is a popular tourist getaway and a major gateway into Sabah and Borneo Island. Apart from featuring a number of tourist attractions in and around the city, Kota Kinabalu is also one of the most thriving industrial and commercial centers in East Malaysia.
Lahad Datu Lahad Datu is located in the Tawau division, occupying the peninsula on the north side of Darvel Bay. Lahad Datu is surrounded by stretches of cocoa and oil palm plantations. Apart from that, it is also an important timber exporting port. A haven for naturalists, Lahad Datu is the gateway to pristine nature destinations such as Danum Valley Conservation Area, Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Madai Caves. Lahad Datu is also a great place to explore on a mountain bike, if you’re into mountain biking.

Semporna
This gateway to beautiful islands is located in the Tawau Division, in the East Coast of Sabah. It is known as an illustrious scuba diving and snorkeling spot, with popular dive spots such as Mabul, Sipadan, Mataking, Pom Pom and Bohey Dulang islands. Off the coast is the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, also known as Semporna Islands Park which was gazetted by Sabah Parks in 2004. Semporna town is mainly populated by the Bajau Laut ethnic community, otherwise known as the Sea Gypsies—many of whom live in sprawling stilt villages above the water or inside the traditional Lepa boats. The grandest event in Semporna -the Regatta Lepa -- is held annually in April.
Sandakan
The historical city of Sandakan is the second largest city in Sabah. It is located in the east coast of Borneo Island and is the administrative centre of the Sandakan Division. It had served as the capital of the British North Borneo during the British colonial time. Sandakan is famous as the gateway for eco-tourism destinations in Sabah such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Selingan Turtle Islands Park, Sukau Proboscis Lodge and Gomantong Caves. Sandakan’s Kinabatangan floodplain is also one of the best places to spot wildlife and go birdwatching. For divers, honeymooners and sun worshippers, Lankayan Island is Sandakan’s handsomest island offering by far.
Tawau
Nestled in the south-east coast of Sabah is Tawau—the third largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. Being surrounded by the ocean, this fast-developing town is famous for its fresh, succulent and cheap seafood. It is also the largest agro-tourism destination in the state with attractions such as Balung Eco Resort, Tawau Hills Park and Teck Guan Cocoa Museum, to name a few.

EATING IN
Kota Kinabalu The city capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu is teeming with places to eat as well as large varieties of cuisines to sample – ranging from local favourites to international delights.
HERE ARE SOME OF OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: SANG NYUK MIEN
Sang Nyuk Mien (Pork Noodle Soup) Ask the average Sabahan abroad of what makes them dream of home the most and chances are, you will hear these three words. Essentially a dish of stewed pork meat (with the option of including organ meat) served with noodles, sang nyuk mien is the ultimate Sabahan comfort food – topped with sinfully luscious lard-ladden broth and zhu you zha (pork cracklings which is made into a paste). It is even better when teamed up with sprinklings of homemade chili! Where to eat? • Kedai Kopi Jia Siang, Lintas Plaza Plaza (tel: 0168303435) • Kedai Kopi Melanian, Gaya Street (tel: 012-8382888).
BEAUFORT MEE
One of the lovely byproduct of diversity is the Beaufort mee, a dish invented by the Hakka community in the Interior Division of Sabah. In appearance, the Beaufort mee looks somewhat similar to the wattan hor (wet fried noodle), except that its thick gravy doesn’t contain egg white and it is usually topped with a generous amount of veggie. The Beaufort mee is usually served with slices of pork meat or char siew (barbecued pork). Where to eat? • Kedai Kopi Yu Hing, City Mall (tel: 088-484747). • Kedai Kopi New Man Tai, Jalan Bundusan (tel: 088717930)
9
SABAH-STYLE TOM YUM NOODLE If you’re used to having the traditional Thai-style tom yum noodle, trying the Sabah-style tom yum noodle will surprise you! Unlike the traditional tom yum, Sabahan tom yum generally has thicker broth, which is added with either evaporated milk or santan (coconut milk). The result is a richer and more filling broth that is simply delicious! Sabahan tom yum is mainly served with seafood such as fish slices and fresh prawn. It is a wonderful bowl of spicy, tangy and creaminess all rolled into one. • •
Where to eat? Kedai Kopi Seng Hing, Sinsuran (tel: 088-211594) Kedai Kopi Janggut, Hilltop (tel: 016-8413849).
(beef noodle soup)
LAKSA
NGIU CHAP
The delicious curry laksa noodles, referred simply as ‘laksa’, is a coconut-based curry soup noodles. The main ingredients for most versions of curry laksa include tofu puffs, fish sticks, shrimp and cockles. Some vendors may sell chicken laksa which uses chicken instead of shrimp. Cockles are also very commonly used in laksa. To enhance its spicy taste, laksa is commonly served with a spoonful of sambal chilli paste. Laksa is simply referred to or ordered at a restaurant as laksa (curry laksa) or assam laksa.
The iconic ngiu chap is Sabah’s answer to the universal beef stew dish. A dish almost identical to the Vietnamese pho, the ngiu chap consists of sliced beef and meatballs, with the option of adding organ meat such as tripe, tendon and liver. It is normally served with noodles, although you can also have it with rice if you like.
Where to eat? • Yee Fung Restaurant, Gaya Street (tel: 6088312042) • Kedai Kopi Kinabalu, Gaya Street.
Where to eat? • Kah Hiong Ngiu Chap, Plaza Grand Millennium (tel: 088-731646) • Kedai Kopi Loi Hin, Donggongon (tel: 088712136).
