Rioja Alavesa is located in the south of the province of Alava, between the Toloño and Cantabria mountain ranges and the river Ebro, and crosses the 23 municipalities that make up Rioja Alavesa, a region traditionally linked to the culture of wine and which still preserves the charm of its medieval villages set among vineyards. With some 12,000 inhabitants, this region has 13,500 hectares of vineyards and almost 400 wineries with an annual production of 100 million bottles of wine under the control of the Appellation d’Origine Rioja. The wines of Rioja Alavesa enjoy a well-earned international reputation. The quality of its wines is largely due to a number of different factors including its alluvial marl soil, which allows the vines to absorb the moisture they need, to its climate and to the location of its vineyards, which are protected from the cold north winds by the Cantabria mountain range, as well as to the painstaking care of the region’s winemakers who combine tradicional winemaking processes and new technologies. In Rioja Alavesa, visitors can sample wines processed in medieval caves or against a background of the spectacular modernist design of some of our new wineries.

Since Roman times, this village has been an important crossing place on the river Ebro. Among the many wineries that exist in the village, some still conserve parts of the original Roman structures. Don't miss the church of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua. Its construction began in the 16th century and its doorway is representative of the decadent baroque style. The image after which the church is named is in the Romanesque-Gothic ‘Andra Mari’ style. A visit to the chapel of San Cristóbal, which offers views of the entire village, is well worth the trouble. The festivals in honour of this saint, who is highly revered in this region, are held on July 10. From the beginning of the 20th century and until recently, a life-size dummy representing the figure of Judas used to be burnt on Good Friday. In this festival, the young men of the village, disguised as Roman soldiers, used to pursue Judas through the streets.

The village of Barriobusto is found at the end of a narrow valley. During our walk through its streets, the tall mountains that loom on each side force us to concentrate our gaze on the stately mansions, some of which were built in the 18 th century. You can still see the village's olive oil press, which, despite being out of service, allows us to imagine how the liquid gold used to be extracted from olives. San Millán is the most modern church of the entire region, as it was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The altarpiece dates from the 17th century and was brought here from the monastery of San Prudencio on Mount Laturce, in La Rioja.

ELCIEGO

Before reaching Elciego, travellers are greeted from afar by the two unequal Gothic-Renaissance towers of the church of San Andrés. The Main Square is characterised by two splendid buildings that face each other across the square: the town hall, with its splendid imperial coat of arms, and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Plaza, with its 18th century octagonal layout. On the outskirts of the town you will find the chapels of San Vicente and San Roque as well as that of Santa Cruz. Another outstanding feature of the town are the avant-garde architectural projects of the winner of the Nobel prize for architecture, Frank O. Gehry. The village, which still conserves the old stone column that symbolised the authority granted to the village to administer justice, celebrates receiving the title of independent “villa” of Laguardia in the 16th century with the Independence Day Festival. This civic-religious festival takes place every year during the first weekend in July and the main symbol is the flag, which is lowered into the street from the balcony of the town hall.

ELVILLAR BILAR

Its position on the side of a hill gives it the appearance of a fortress. From a distance one can see the Parish Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, built on an old defensive bastion. Inside, there is a 16th century altarpiece, wellknown for the expressiveness of its images. A walk around its streets reveals a number of palatial mansions, one of which is especially outstanding: the Casa del Indiano, with its coat of arms, artistic balconies and railings. Its Main Square is a good place for meeting one’s friends on lazy summer evenings. Within walking distance of the town you will find the ‘La Chabola de la Hechicera’ dolmen, a megalithic construction that was apparently used as a mass pantheon and which, according to legend, was inhabited by a witch of an ancient race of mythological beings, similar to the gentiles of other regions of the Basque Country.

Kripan is crossed by the medieval pilgrims routes that run through Cantabria mountains. Around the village one can still see remains of the old road, possibly of Roman origin, lined with large slabs of stone. Inside the village, the noblest buildings are found in an open space in the Barbacana Square. The 17th century church of San Juan has an early baroque altarpiece. On the outskirts of the village you can visit the Los Llanos and Encinal dolmens. A good option is to visit the park of the Nacedero, a meeting place for hikers. The village is also good place to start the ascent to the chapel of San Tirso, protected inside a large cave high up in Cantabria mountains.

Labastida was a walled town belong to the kingdom of Navarre until 1200, the year in which it came under the control of the crown of Castile. In the town, you can find numerous stately homes, mansions, ample entrance halls, beautiful religious buildings and the largest number of ashlar stone ancestral homes in Rioja Alavesa, festooned with coats of arms. An interesting feature on the street called Calle Mayor is the house of Manuel Quintano, who was responsible for introducing the winemaking techniques of Bordeaux into Spain in the 18th century. The chapel of Holy Christ is a major feature of the town. This chapel still preserves the appearance of a fortress, a magnificent watchtower that affords splendid views of the region. The church of La Asunción contains an old organ built in 1670, perfectly preserved and still in operation, along with a spectacular baroque altapiece. In La Paz Square, next to the town hall, you will find the Casa Palacio de los Salazar, today the House of Culture, in the past, the home of several local families and before that, as its name suggests, it was the home of the Salazar family.

LABRAZA

Labraza occupies a commanding position on the horizon as one approaches the village, and on arrival one finds narrow streets, alleyways and an ambience that takes us back to the times when it was an important fortified town and a major player in many wars in the middle ages. Its walls contain towers and machicolations that are considered to be treasures of our historical heritage. Entering the walled enclosure via the south gate, a series of narrow alleys lead to the church of San Miguel, whose Gothic walls form part of the village's defences. It is interesting to visit the Fountain of Moro, dating from the 14th century. Inside there is a spout decorated with a carved Gothic head of the Moor that gives this fountain its name. The fountain, dug out of the southern side of the wall, concealed a secret passage leading to a place inside the village. It was an ingenious way of obtaining water Turing sieges. Labraza contains the Best World Walled Town award. This award is granted every three years to innovative projects that cover the management, conservation and restoration of this type of historical fortifications.

LAGUARDIA BIASTERI

Founded in the 10th century as a defensive stronghold of the Kingdom of Navarre, Laguardia stands on a small hill and its medieval layout has been preserved almost intact. At either end of the village, you will find the churches of San Juan Bautista and Santa María de los Reyes, with its exceptional, superbly-conserved polychrome portico. Nearby, you can see the Torre Abacial, an old castle refurbished as a bell tower. Its narrow streets converge on the Plaza de San Juan where you will find the Palace of Fabulista Samaniego, native of the village, built in ashlar stone and with a beautiful neoclassical doorway. One of the oldest civil buildings is La Primicia, which dates from the 14th century.Virtually every house in the village has its own winery, built under street level, and as a result, the subsoil of the whole village is riddled with an underground system of caves and vaults. A large number of civic-religious traditions are maintained. The festivals of San Juan and San Pedro have a magic all of their own.

The major feature of this church is its Renaissance altarpiece and Rococo choir with its beautifully carved pews and excellent Baroque organ, one of the oldest in the Basque Country.Another of its major religious buildings is the 18th century Chapel of Ntra. Sra. del Campo, with its “Andra Mari”type image of the Virgin Mary. One of the most important civil buildings is the 18th century Palace Marquesa de Armendáriz, today the town hall. Its underground ashlar-stone vaults are perfectly preserved. Near the town hall, you will find the magnificent neoclassical fountain, washhouse and watering trough, and the birthplace of the composer Sebastián Iradier y Salaberri, known worldwide for the song “La Paloma”. It is very interesting to visit oil press, which is still used to process olive oil according to traditional methods. Major attractions within the municipality include the Bridge Mantible, in the village of Assa, the Parish Church of Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción and the medieval fountain of Viñaspre.

This village, on the banks of the river Ebro, owes its name to a boat that used to cross the river, joining the region of Sonsierra, which belonged to the Kingdom of Navarre, with the Kingdom of Castile. It is curious to note that the boatman’s contract, dated in 1571, stipulated that the money paid by passengers on Sundays and on the days of Our Lady, had to be handed over to the sacristan of the church. Today, it is a very recommendable experience to walk along the banks of the river Ebro, the walk of La Póveda, to see its vineyards. You can also visit the 16th century Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which was built on an ancient cemetery. In the Street of Mediodía you can see an 18th century mansion. The long-seated tradition of the wine culture in this region can be seen in the area of Las Cuevas, where a Lumber of wineries, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, riddled the small hill located to the west of the village. In February the Uztaberri wine festival is held, where the vine-growers and winemakers celebrate the new wine harvest.

LEZA

Located on a crossroads, the village has Renaissance style 16th century homes festooned with coats of arms, as well as other splendid buildings. The Parish Church of San Martín has a doorway dating from the time of Queen Isabel, a neoclassical altarpiece and a beautiful star-shaped dome. Most of the wineries in Leza are located on the “lombilla”, a small hill to the east of the village. These were dug out of the ground and were used for processing excellent wines until gradually, over the years, they were replaced by more functional buildings, but without the charm of those ancient wineries. In the neighbouring area you can visit the El Sotillo and Layaza dolmens, vestiges of the men and women who lived in this region in prehistoric times.Very near Leza, one can climb the Herrera mountain pass, to the Balcón de la Rioja. From here one can get wonderful views of a large part of the area covered by the Appellation d’Origine.

MOREDA DE ÁLAVA

Built on a slope and boasting a number of splendid buildings festooned with coats of arms, the village still preserves parts of its walls and an ancient stronghold. The 16th century Parish Church of Santa María, is elegant and austere. The interior of the church is decorated with 17th century paintings. At No. 7, Street Virgen Blanca, you will find the oldest house in Moreda, which dates from the end of the 15th century and has a pointed arch. The village also boasts magnificent mansions dating from the 17th , 18th and 19th centuries. On the outskirts of the village, you should not miss visiting its historical olive oil press. Moreda still preserves the tradition of the burning of Judas on Resurrection Sunday, with a peculiarity that in this case there are two figures: the ‘judas’, husband and wife. Some days before, a group of young people prepare the life-size dolls, which are placed on a framework of sticks, and are filled with straw. After mass on Resurrection Sunday, the trial starts in the village square. The tribunal accuses the "judas" of being responsible for all the misfortunes that have occurred in the village during the year. There is no right of appeal against the verdict: they are burnt at the stake.

From the beginning of time, the border lands and fields of Navaridas were the scene of battles and wars between all the nations that fought to occupy them: Celts and Romans, Christians and Arabs, Basques and Castilians. All the inhabitants, from the Bronze Age to today, have worked the lands to produce the greatest of our treasures: wine. The people of Navaridas have always been attracted to the land where they have lived, preserving their ancestral traditions, ever since the town of Navaridas was founded back in the twelfth century, in the shadow of the crown land of Laguardia, where two small villages, Navaridas de Yuso and Suso, subsequently merged into a single town; today's Navaridas, and even when they were granted the title of "Villa", becoming independent from Laguardia, through purchasing the charter from King Carlos II in 1666 and becoming an independent member of the Juntas Generales de la Hermandad de Alava (General Courts of the Brotherhood of Alava).

An important milestone on the first pilgrim's way to Santiago, it still preserves mansions of great historical value. The Main Square (Plaza Mayor) features some of the oldest Renaissance and Baroque buildings and the old quarters offers a varied selection of coats of arms that speak of its medieval past. At the entrance to the village is the baroque palace of Marques del Puerto, whose facade includes the inscription: "no fallara esta espada quebrar miles". The church of Santa Maria has a sixteenth century Plateresque choir and its baroque tower is considered the most slender and well-designed in the Rioja region, topped by the silhouette of a spinner as a weathervane. Oyón retains many popular festivals, including the festivities of the patron saints, San Vicente and San Anastasio (in January), the "Revolcón del Katxi", ”los Marchos", "El Torillo" and the Auroras; as well as the Thanksgiving festivities (August) and the "Bajada del Katxi".

PÁGANOS

The most important features of the small village of Páganos are the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with its Renaissance doorway and altarpiece, and the mansion of Juan Ortiz de Zárate, of reddish stone and with a coat of arms on which one can read “El mundo es ansí”, the title of a novel by Pío Baroja. Ortiz de Zárate was secretary of the Inquisition in Zaragoza and later, Inquisitor in Cartagena (Peru) and Bishop of Salamanca. On the outskirts of the village and on the road to Laguardia-Biasteri do not miss the dolmen of San Martín. If you visit Páganos on February 3, the day of San Blas, patron saint of the village, you will see the most primitive traditional dance of the whole region, the “chulalai”. It is also traditional to drink “hot wine”, a drink made with boiled wine, lemon, sugar and cinnamon.

highlights • Festival of San Blas. February. • Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. • Mansion of Juan Ortiz de Zárate.

SALINILLAS DE BURADÓN GATZAGA

Salinillas is protected by the Toloño mountain range and played a major role in the defence of Castile. The village was also renowned for its saltpans, after which the village was named. These remained in operation until the beginning of the 19th century. Almost the entire village wall remains standing and it still preserves its gates, which are the only way one can access the village. On your walk through the village you will see the pilgrims hospital of Santa Ana, dating from the 15th century, and in the village square you will be surprised by the tower of the Sarmientos y Ayalas, dating from the 14th century, around which the Renaissance palace of the Conde de Oñate was built. Both buildings are in ruins today but they evoke a splendid past. This village is a stopping place for pilgrims on their way to Santiago after crossing the province of Alava from the "tunnel" of San Adrián from north to south.

The streets of Samaniego invite one to take a walk among the well-preserved, severe, stone-built houses. The village centre maintains a structure that recalls the important role this village played in the wars of the Middle Ages. The parish church of La Asunción was built on the walls of a fortress and still maintains its austere appearance today, in contrast to the decorative style of the late Baroque facade. La Casa de los Diezmos and the Palacio de Samaniego, which has been completely restored and converted into a magnificent hotel, are some of his more outstanding civil buildings. The village of Samaniego holds a number of events during the year, such as the Burning of Judas on Resurrection Sunday; “las mañas”, on the night of December 7 when people walk through the streets with burning branches in order to purify the village and to frighten away demons. Its carnivals and the celebration of Whitsunday are also interesting.

The village is distributed on both sides of the river Herrera, which runs through a deep valley. Its more important civil buildings include the Casa del Marqués de Solana or the Casa del Indiano, with its relief by Santiago Matamoros. Its parish church is dedicated to San Andrés, and was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. A visit to the chapel of San Torcuato and Santa María, where you can see the remains of its original Romanesque construction in the apse, is well worth the trouble. The charming village square is a perfect meeting place and the heart of the social life of the village. Villabuena is the perfect place for mountain bike enthusiasts as there are innumerable tracks through the vineyards.

YÉCORA IEKORA

The village of Yécora is placed on the hill surrounded by vineyards and cereal crops. Its old Gothic fountain, which stands in a charming little corner in the eastern part of the village, is of special interest. Little more than 1 km from the village centre, there stands the chapel of Santa María de Bercijana, which was built between the 13th and 14 centuries. The construction of the sanctuary, the choice of the place and the name of the image relate very closely to the belief that the Virgin Mary appeared on the hills to Berciján, a shepherd of Yécora. On August 25, there is a festival in honour of La Anunciación. The whole village walks down to the chapel in procession, behind a group of local dancers. On the Saturday before May 12, festival of Santo Domingo, there is also a procession to the chapel. On that day, there is a dance called “la cadena” and the image of the Virgin Mary of Bercijana (14th century) is taken to the church. The male dancers wear a brightly-coloured overskirt over white trousers and shirt and a blue band across their chest..

The San Pedro family has been making wine in the traditional manner in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa, for over 500 years. The cave, as such, dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth century and it began to be used as a wine cellar back to the sixteenth-seventeenth century. Like all underground cellars in Laguardia, it is located beneath the town surface, at a depth of about 8 meters below the streets, which provides excellent conditions for aging wine. It is one of the few that is still used as a cellar and is almost in its original state. We have daily tours to the cellar in Spanish and English. The wine from Ondalan is unique in its fidelity to the land where it is made, in the care and selection of our own grapes and in the permanent care placed in its preparation and maturing. The human factor is a fundamental part of his philosophy, where the direct, familiar and understanding treatment with those who share our work is a key element. TORRE DE OÑA MÁX. 20

Vineyards are the essence of Torre de Oña, which is located in the "Golden Mile" of Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Cantabria Mountain Range. When you have such unique vineyards, it is almost a duty to make wine that is a tribute to the privileged land that sees its birth. True to this "château" or estate wine philosophy, at Torre de Oña we only make wine of the best vintages and exclusively with our own grapes, 65 acres of Tempranillo and Mazuelo, surrounding our winery. During the visit we shall explain details of the vineyard on site from a typical shelter, visitors will see how we make our wine in the winery and, finally, we shall taste our wines together. You will see how we "listen" to our winery to prepare the Torre de Oña Reserve and the Finca San Martin aged wine. The scenery is fantastic, with a spectacular lay of the land. You may enjoy a meal in our private dining room, stay in our Mansion-Palace open to wine-tourism or just stroll through the vineyards in the sun. Torre de Oña is a joy for the senses. The fruits of our good work in caring for the vineyard, our wine making and ageing have been borne out by the fact that we have received numerous awards and recognition at different competitions both within Spain and overseas, in addition to high ratings in different specialist magazines. The wine cellar has a 300,000 litre capacity, and also owns 25 hectares of its own vineyards, controlled using stocks that are over 100 years old with 90% Tempranillo, 6% Viura 6%, 3% Malaysia and 1% other varieties arranged via a traditional low vine plantation system.
