RUTH ECKERD HALL … CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS

Friends Dear Friends, With this year’s Community Improvement Report, we’d like to share stories with you about the countless ways that Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Capitol Theatre and the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts have touched the lives of so many within our community. We truly believe that the performing arts have improved our individual lives as well as improved our community as a whole. For Joshua (“Josh”), the performing arts entered his life at a young age when he attended his first live symphony performance. Since then, Josh has held key leadership roles at various performing arts organizations as well as made many fond memories attending performances and events at Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre. For Zev, the performing arts influenced who he has spent his life with (he met Vilma, his wife of 50 years, when she auditioned and was cast in his very first Broadway show). Zev (and Vilma) have spent a lifetime promoting the performing arts and they wouldn’t change a thing!

We encourage you to review the stories shared throughout our Community Improvement Report along with statistics and accolades for our premiere performing arts venue and exceptional arts education school in the “story notes.” We hope that you enjoy reading the stories as much as we did! Thank you for joining us on our continual quest to change lives through the performing arts!

Forming Bonds of Friendship According to Vicki and Steven DeGeorge, members since 2007, ”Our experience at Ruth Eckerd Hall goes beyond just seeing a show. Our chats with all the staff members sharing stories from our lives and their kind words of appreciation are what really keeps us coming back. Everyone gives us the red carpet treatment and we so appreciate that. We have also made great friends just by being behind the scenes and at Dress Circle events.”

Ruth Eckerd Hall has world class acoustics, an intimate setting and a friendly, proactive staff that makes each show a pleasure. It is the very best venue in the Tampa Bay area.” 7

THE CAPITOL THEATRE … CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS The historic Capitol Theatre underwent a major renovation that transformed it into a customer centric venue that rivals any other theater of its size in the country. While remaining sensitive to the intimacy, acoustics and sightlines that have made the Capitol Theatre special over the years, the new venue features a new façade that will reflect the historic past, all new seating for more patrons, more restrooms, better concession areas, new lobbies, loge boxes, a wraparound veranda, a rooftop terrace, a new stage, an expanded backstage area, additional dressing rooms and much more!

George Cretekos, Clearwater Mayor shared, “This is a proud moment in the continuing partnership between the City of Clearwater and Ruth Eckerd Hall. This groundbreaking ushers in a new era of world-class performances at the Capitol Theatre and breathes new excitement into Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District.” Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO commented, “When I joined Ruth Eckerd Hall in January 2012, my first priority was to rebuild and renew this theater and for it to be the crown jewel and anchor of downtown Clearwater. This vision is coming true! This could not have happened without our partner, the City of Clearwater, its Mayor and the City Council.”

New Life Breathed Into Capitol Theatre

In December 2012, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the City of Clearwater held a groundbreaking ceremony for the rebuilding of the Capitol Theatre. Nearly 100 supporters, patrons and residents attended. Located in downtown Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District, the Capitol Theatre was constructed in 1921 and is one of Florida’s oldest operating theaters. On March 24, 2013, after a sold-out performance by veteran comic Gallagher, the historic Capitol Theatre closed its doors. Prior to the show, a ceremony was held to unveil the Capitol Theatre’s final rendering. A rendering hung above the marquee and gave those who passed by a glimpse of the future of the 92-year-old structure. 8

STORY NOTES: Total number of events held – 54*. Total number of sold-out shows – 14*. *The Capitol Theatre was closed between March 25 and December 17, 2013 for renovations.

THE CAPITOL THEATRE … CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS

Honor Geri Trautlein donated $1 million to the Expanding the Experience Capital Campaign to restore the Capitol Theatre. Geri and her husband, Ray, had a long emotional history with the Capitol Theatre. Ray always wanted to purchase the Lokey building next to the theater, which housed a dress shop where Geri modeled. During the ‘80s when the theater was called the Royalty Theatre, Geri danced on the stage in Sweet Charity and served on the board. Ray passed away in 2009. According to Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall CEO and President, “Geri’s commitment to Ruth Eckerd Hall and especially the Capitol Theatre cannot be measured and her love for Ray to honor him this way is very special. We cannot thank her enough for her commitment to the Capitol and Clearwater.”

Ray Trautlein (1925 – 2009) “Ray and I have lived here more than 40 years and I still make Clearwater my home. We always felt a connection with the theater and that corner building. Now, Ray’s legacy will continue on that corner we love so much,” Geri shared. “I like giving while I’m living so I’m knowing where it’s going – it’s give-back time.”

In recognition of their generosity, two main areas of the all-new theatre will be named in their honor, The Ray & Geri Trautlein Grande Lobby and the Ray & Geri Trautlein VIP Lounge. 9

THE MARCIA P. HOFFMAN SCHOOL OF THE ARTS … CHANGING LIVES THROUGH THE PERFORMING ARTS Project: Shattered Silence – Helping Teens Find Their Voice Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Project: Shattered Silence features the real-life experiences of young people in our community, told in their voices. Since being formed, Project: Shattered Silence has grown from barely 15 participants in the first year to nearly 70 in the fifth year. One example of a real-life story was shared by Ana, who by the age of 15 had suffered unbelievable abuse at the hands of her stepfather. After three years and many beatings, Ana and her family bravely fled. After battling homelessness and tremendous anger, Ana has become an honor student, received prestigious leadership awards and has a very promising future. This unique program gave Ana an outlet to share her experiences and a way to work toward forgiveness and healing. This special type of heartfelt storytelling caught the attention of the local community station, WEDU, who jumped on board to document the process of creating Project: Shattered Silence start to finish. A segment of the documentary was nominated for and won a 37th Annual Suncoast Regional Emmy Award. The documentary premiered and aired on WEDU, bringing the project’s message to a broader audience outside the Clearwater community possibly changing even more lives.

Generosity Grantor’s Generosity Provides Enriching Environment for Students

For years the Tampa Bay Times Fund has supported tuition assistance for students whose families demonstrate need to attend summer classes at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Thanks to their generous grant we were able to offer tuition assistance for 95 classroom experiences to children ages three to 17. According to the parent of one of the students, “Thanks to the tuition assistance program our daughter was able to return for the second summer. It meant the world to her and our family. As a young child, she was extremely shy and found it difficult to speak up in school. Well those days are behind us thanks to the high quality training provided with love and guidance from your professional staff. My daughter has recently earned a solo spot in an upcoming school play. Thank you for making a tremendous difference in a young girl’s life!”

We thank Ruth Eckerd Hall’s grantors. They support our efforts to engage future arts patrons through a variety of programming! Support for Ruth Eckerd Hall is provided in part through the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Clearwater and the Leading Ladies of Ruth Eckerd Hall.
