Ruth Eckerd Hall | Capitol Theatre | Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute
Dear Friends of Ruth Eckerd Hall: It is hard to believe it has been 29 years since Ruth Eckerd Hall opened its doors to the community. As we take a moment to look back on the 2011–12 fiscal year, we remember the anticipation, excitement and tremendous support we felt from the Tampa Bay community. Today, having completed our 28th season and moved into our 29th season, we continue to experience the same feelings of excitement and support from the community and we THANK YOU!

At Ruth Eckerd Hall, Inc. one of our primary goals is to present the finest cultural and educational programming in the Tampa Bay area allowing friends, families and neighbors the ability to share in the excitement of the arts! During the 2011–12 season, Ruth Eckerd Hall had many milestones! We “burned the mortgage” on the 30 year mortgage for the additional $5 million (in the early ‘80s $9.5 million was raised; $14.5 million was the actual cost) needed for the completion of the construction. Announced an $18 million capital campaign entitled Expanding the Experience, which includes renovations and expansion to the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus with improvements such as expanding the Grand Lobby, adding floor-to-ceiling glass walls, adding a new cabaret theater stage in the Grand Lobby and expanding the Hoffman Dress Circle Lounge. Another exciting highlight was the announcement of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s first ever “self-produced” show – Agatha Christie’s The BBC Murders. The show will carry Ruth Eckerd Hall’s name nationally as it tours to other venues and be an additional revenue source. Auditions for Agatha Christie’s The BBC Murders, four lost and found classic radio plays, were held in June 2012. From top to bottom: First Ruth Eckerd Hall “self-produced” show. For nearly 10 years, Ruth Eckerd Hall has expanded its presence and branded the Hall’s name on events all around the Tampa Bay area and beyond.
Friends of Music from Ruth Eckerd Hall gives members unparalleled access to their music idols! FOM members enjoy three concerts per season and share unique, once-in-a-lifetime music experiences while raising necessary funds to bring performing arts into the lives of children who would not otherwise experience it. The third season of Friends of Music kicked it up a notch with three fantastic concerts with Kid Rock, The Fray and Neon Trees and two educational opportunities with Billy Joel at the Palladium in St. Petersburg and Gavin DeGraw at the Springs Theatre in Tampa. The educational opportunities were made possible with the Friends of Music Education Express, a van that provides the transportation for artists to be driven to places in our community easily or for students to be driven to where the artist is performing. The Friends of Music Education Express was made possible by Friends of Music members’ support and debuted at the Billy Joel event. B2B Sign Resource (located at 32140 U.S. Highway 19 in Palm Harbor) sponsored the entire van wrap and helped make this idea come to fruition.
Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road has produced the popular Tampa Bay Rays Summer Concert Series at the Trop for the past six years with over 50 concerts and Blast Friday, a free monthly outdoor concert in downtown Clearwater held in front of the Capitol Theatre in the Cleveland Street District, for two years. In 2011-12, Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road was also responsible for booking sold out concerts at the Palladium in St. Petersburg including Billy Joel, Kathleen Madigan and others. Additionally, Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road partners with many organizations and festivals such as the Clearwater Jazz Holiday (featuring Bonnie Raitt and the Avett Brothers), booked entertainment for corporate events for Tech Data Corporation in Florida and California and are currently booking the NFL’s St. Louis Rams postgame concerts. Additionally, Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road promoted The Blue Collar Comedy Tour at The Tampa Bay Times Arena in 2011. Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road books the artists for the popular Friends of Music Concert Series continuing to expand the brand locally as well as outside the Clearwater community. Since the inception over 29 years ago, Ruth Eckerd Hall has maintained a high level of arts education excellence both on-site and off-site, serving local, state and national communities.
The City of Clearwater owns the Capitol Theatre and Ruth Eckerd Hall manages and operates the intimate venue located in the Cleveland Street District located in the heart of downtown.
Since opening the doors in 2003, the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall has become a gathering place for the community – from retirees participating in Creative Aging seminars to high school and college-aged young adults experiencing the Technical Theater Career Training workshops. One of the many priorities for the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall is to provide access to the arts to those that may not otherwise experience it. In addition to the vast and generous efforts by the Leading Ladies, there are several annual scholarship programs to help accomplish that goal. They are the Leslie and Robert Freedman Scholarship Fund, which honors retired President and CEO and his wife’s outstanding support of the arts, the Fred Travalena Memorial Scholarship, which honors Fred’s special relationship with and commitment to our military, the Johnny Maestro Vocal Scholarship, which honors Jon “Bowzer” Bauman of Sha Na Na’s dear friend, the Landon Korabek Memorial Scholarship, which honors the Korabek’s son’s love of music and the guitar and five Ruth Eckerd Hall Youth Scholarships in Performing Arts. Additionally, the Barbie Englehardt Scholarship Assistance Fund and the Volunteer Usher Fund provide funds to deserving art students.
During the 2011–12 season, Ruth Eckerd Hall announced the $18 million capital campaign entitled Expanding the Experience, which includes renovations to the Capitol Theatre. Funding for the complete reconstruction of the Capitol Theatre was unanimously approved by Clearwater Mayor, George Cretekos and the Clearwater City Council. The Capitol Theatre received a $250,000 anonymous gift and a $10,000 check from Water’s Edge, a downtown Clearwater waterfront luxury condominium. Renovations to the Capitol Theatre will include increased seating capacity from 485 to 700, a new mezzanine level with a concession stand and restrooms, six luxury loge boxes, new seats throughout the theatre, enlarged and increased number of restrooms, increased lobby space, an enlarged ticket office, an elevator, improved staircases, a VIP Lounge with a private bar and a Rooftop Terrace with the best view in town! Community Partners In addition to presenting the finest cultural and educational programming as well as being gathering places for the community, Ruth Eckerd Hall, the Capitol Theatre and the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute proudly give back to our community. Two initiatives that the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall undertook during the 2011–12 season involved senior adults as well as high school and college students making our location a gathering place for both of these two different audiences. A $25,000 grant from an anonymous foundation had the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute partnering with the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA) to host one of three Creativity Matters: Arts & Aging Core Training for Teaching Artists sessions across the U.S. NCCA received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to pilot these workshops in order to form a replicable curriculum and training template to train artists to engage older adults in the arts through learner-centered arts education. An exciting new initiative was started with the first Technical Theater Career Training workshop. These workshops broaden the opportunities for students that wish to work behind-the-scenes to design and build sets, operate lighting, sound and digital effects. The Technical Theater Career Training Workshops partnered with Production Resource Group (PRG), Pinellas County high schools, private high schools and local colleges and the Broadway League. When the renovations to Ruth Eckerd Hall planned through the Expanding the Experience capital campaign are complete, a cabaret theater stage will be a new feature in the West Lobby. Students will have the opportunity to perform as well as be part of the technical process preparing performances for Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Main Stage.
During the 2011–12 season, nearly 1,570 complimentary tickets were donated to 275 nonprofit community partners to support their fundraising efforts. We also distributed nearly 1,190 complimentary tickets for teacher engagement through our educational outreach programs. Examples of other nonprofit organizations within our community that we have partnered with to expand our reach and assist in fulfilling our mission: All Children’s Hospital American Cancer Society American Diabetes Association American Heart Association Big Brothers/Big Sisters Boys and Girls Clubs Children’s Home Society of Tampa Clearwater Free Clinic Clearwater Jazz Holiday
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Homeless Emergency Project (HEP) Lighthouse for the Blind Make A Wish Foundation March of Dimes Muscular Dystrophy Association Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) Ronald McDonald House Charities
Safety Harbor Museum Suncoast Hospice Foundation Susan G. Komen Foundation St. Petersburg Free Clinic The Spring of Tampa Bay United Way of Tampa Bay UPARC VSA Florida YMCA of the Suncoast
Organizations we partnered with to assist them in meeting their mission and ensure that their participants had access to and inclusion in the arts:
Clockwise from top: Technical Theater Career Training students receive the creative and technical foundation for future careers in today’s entertainment industry. Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute students involved in Project: Shattered Silence, a project that uses true stories from its members to stage a play that helps the audience members learn that true healing comes when we share and learn from each other’s stories, presented a $1,600 check to the Children’s Home Society of Tampa. Claire, Connor and Adam Patchen with the big jolly man in the red suit at the Leading Ladies Breakfast with Santa event, which has become a holiday tradition for the family for the past eight years. Bonnie and Jason Patchen also support Ruth Eckerd Hall by being Friends of Music members. Students attending a Technical Theater Career Training workshop get up-close and personal instruction on lighting. Seniors stay active and experience arts education through Arts & Aging program.
