Duffy Anderson-Rothe, Associate Producer Photo credit: Jeff O’Kelley
Duffy Anderson-Rothe is Ruth Eckerd Hall’s new Associate Producer. She has held a wide variety of positions in theater. Most recently Duffy was the Vice President of Production and Presentational Development with Shorenstein Hays Nederlander Theatres (SHN). In addition to overseeing and managing the New York office, she also served as Executive Producer of the 2010 Tony Award® winner for Best Revival, August Wilson’s FENCES, starring Denzel Washington and was the Line Producer for A Behanding in Spokane, starring Christopher Walken. Prior to her position with SHN, Duffy was the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Clear Channel’s Pacific Entertainment Group based in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, where she was the Executive Producer of the Peking Opera project and for incoming and outgoing live entertainment projects for the Pacific Rim region. Duffy is married to her husband, Kai and they have a daughter, Harper. Reporting directly to Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s President and CEO, Duffy will immediately become the point person for the national tour of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Agatha Christie’s The BBC MURDERS, scheduled to open later this year for a week’s run at the Capitol Theatre. Personal Call will be presented for the first time in Florida at the Capitol Theatre November 13-18 before heading out on a national tour. The first stop of the tour will be the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in January 2013. Duffy will also be involved in existing and new aspects of production at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall including Eckerd Theater Company (ETC) events and performances for the local and regional stage, such as The Hundred Dresses and A Thousand Cranes. She will also be greatly involved in strengthening the Broadway Series and building the subscription series as well as launching the Technical Theater Track. Zev commented, “We are so pleased to welcome Duffy to Ruth Eckerd Hall. This significant addition to our senior staff is a result of our stepping up shows to be produced by Ruth Eckerd Hall in the immediate future. She brings a wealth of knowledge and passion from her experiences producing Tony Award®-winning Broadway productions.” “I’m excited to join a team at such a respected venue in the Bay area and around the world. I look forward to working with Zev, our Chief Programming Officer Bobby Rossi and the entire Ruth Eckerd Hall staff as we develop productions for Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre,” Duffy shared.

This season, Friends of Music kicked it up a notch with two FANTASTIC concerts this spring and a focus on making education opportunities possible with the Friends of Music Education Express. KID ROCK rocked The Capitol Theatre on April 1 with a full-blown rock show and showed members that he is a superstar performer moving from rap to country. Next up was The Fray on May 5 who performed a blend of new and old hits as well as surprised guests by showing up at the after party for Cinco de Mayo at the Harborview Center. What a treat! Two education opportunities were made possible by funds raised from the Friends of Music program this spring. In March, St. Petersburg College students were able to attend a Q&A event with the legendary Billy Joel at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg. In May, 17 students from The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute were given the opportunity to attend a private rehearsal with Gavin DeGraw and take photos with him at the Springs Theatre in Tampa. Both of these opportunities were made possible due to our new Friends of Music Education Express, a van that provides the transportation for artists to be driven to places in our community or for students to be driven to where the artist will be performing. B2B Sign Resource (located at 32140 U.S. Highway 19 in Palm Harbor) sponsored the entire van wrap and helped make this idea come to fruition.

belong Expanding the Experience To Meet the Needs of the Community Nearly 30 years ago Ruth Eckerd Hall was built in response to the community’s needs for a symphony concert hall and premier performing arts center. Community leaders and arts patrons came together to raise the necessary funds. This year, Ruth Eckerd Hall is embarking on an $18 million capital campaign entitled Expanding the Experience, to once again meet the community’s needs. The campaign includes renovation and expansion to both the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus and the Capitol Theatre as well as reserve funds for both. The construction funds for the Capitol Theatre have already been secured. As members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall family, we want to share a few highlights of the campaign: • $12 million to improve Ruth Eckerd Hall focused on upgrading and expanding space and patron amenities in the West Lobby, Grand Concourse, Hoffman Dress Circle Lounge and increasing visibility from McMullen Booth Road. • All land and construction monies have been raised for the Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater, which Ruth Eckerd Hall has been operating for the city for more than two years. These funds have been committed by the City of Clearwater. • Three million dollars in additional building and operating reserves to help ensure future sustainability of the “Expanded Experience” at Ruth Eckerd Hall. A two million dollar reserve fund for the Capitol Theatre is in the works.

“We’ve been in a ‘quiet’ campaign resulting so far in completing all the funding for the Capitol Theatre construction, which leaves us to raise nearly $18 million in the coming year for construction and various reserves,” said Joshua Magidson, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chairman of the Board of Directors. In late May and early June, private receptions were held for the usher corps and Circle of Stars members to share the excitement and details of the campaign along with information on how to get involved. “As we approach our 30th birthday, Ruth Eckerd Hall is embarking on a wonderful journey to expand the experience for the greater Tampa Bay area,” commented Stephanie Smith, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Development Officer. “This is an exciting time at the Hall and we hope that all our Ruth Eckerd Hall family members will get involved in supporting this incredible venture!”

shine Families and Children Benefit from Tampa Bay Times Fund Generosity Once again this year, the Tampa Bay Times Fund has stepped forward with a contribution to the summer tuition assistance program of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. With a donation of $5,000 they have enabled The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute to ensure that no child is denied an arts experience because of financial need. “We know that participation in arts programs helps children appreciate their creativity and their unique gifts,” said Nancy Waclawek, Director of the Tampa Bay Times Fund. “And summer camp is fun! So we’re thrilled to be able to help more children experience that fun.” One such child is Kasey Yates, who returns to the summer program for the second year. His mom, Loyda, offers this insight: “This program granted an unimaginable opportunity for Kasey to grow in the performing arts world. Given the tuition assistance program and the amount of positive encouragement he receives each day from The Marcia Kasey Yates, a seven-year-old summer camp participant with P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute staff, teachers and peers he is allowed to be himself spina-bifida doesn’t let his disease prevent him from having a and experience new opportunities. This made an impact for a lifetime in his ever growing great summer being a regular kid. and changing world.” This year, Kasey will participate in several classes, including Try It!, Fairies & Wizards, Ice Age and Band of Pirates at no cost to his family. “The summer program for Kasey is a tremendous blessing for us,” says Loyda. All involved couldn’t agree more!

shine Technical Theater Track to Launch This fall, Ruth Eckerd Hall and The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute will launch its most ambitious effort in years, a Technical Theater Track to give Bay area students the opportunity to receive the creative and technical foundation for future careers in today’s entertainment industry. The Technical Track will partner with Pinellas and Hillsborough County high schools, private high schools and local colleges. This program will broaden the opportunities for students that wish to work behind-the-scenes to design and build sets, operate lighting, sound and digital effects under the supervision of award-winning professionals of Broadwaycaliber productions. A major partner in this exciting endeavor is Production Resource Group (PRG), which will help recruit leading industry professionals to work with the students (as will the Broadway League through their Broadway Speakers Bureau). PRG will also provide state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that students are working with the most current and widely used entertainment technology. Students will also be given the chance to apply for PRG’s prestigious internships at 14 sites across the U.S. “We are about to embark on a fabulous journey,” said Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO. “When I speak with community leaders they comment that what is needed are jobs, jobs, jobs. Young people want to be a part of theater but don’t realize they can have a technical career in the arts.” Additionally, when the renovation of Ruth Eckerd Hall is complete, a cabaret theater stage (see pages four and five) will be a new feature in the Grand Lobby. Students will have the opportunity to perform as well as be part of the technical process preparing performances Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Technical Theater Track will broaden the opportunities for students to receive the creative and technical for Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Main Stage.
