Preparatory Division The Preparatory Division classes for ages 7–19 are suitable for students who have talents they wish to develop through sequential study to prepare for college-level training and/ or a career in the arts. Students are required to audition before a panel of arts advisors for placement in our structured curriculum.

Attendance Policies:
Fall Term
Students are expected to attend class each week. Fellow students’ development is affected when a classmate is absent because the majority of the work done in class is ensemble in nature. School conflicts for concerts, performances, etc. may be excused when advance written notice is given. Illness may be excused with advance notice by phone or email. In case of a family emergency, a call within 24 hours of the absence is requested. Should a student miss multiple classes for unacceptable reasons, the status of the student will change to class participation only and the student will not take part in the final performance or presentation nor receive transcript credit for the class. Please inform the Registrar via email or phone in advance of any anticipated absence so the instructor can plan appropriately for each class.

DARE TO DREAM SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are awarded annually in the areas of drama, voice, jazz, instrumental and dance to high school juniors and seniors currently enrolled at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute to encourage continued study. First place awards are $3,000. Applications will be available August 24 and the submission deadline is October 15, 2013. Preliminary auditions are November 6, 7 and 9. Finals will be held January 30. PRIVATE LESSONS
Preparatory Classes
Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students who wish to strengthen their performance skills. The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute offers private instruction in voice, piano, violin and viola, guitar, dance and acting.
Private Lesson Fees and Policies • Lessons may be purchased in multiples of 4 (e.g., 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.)* • Lesson fees are as follows: $25.00-$31.50 for 30 minutes $37.50-$46.75 for 45 minutes $49.75-$62.50 for 60 minutes
Dance Track
With a strong emphasis on technique, the Dance Track provides a course of study that prepares the dancer for a future career or collegiate study. Jazz and tap technique classes are the foundation for the Tap Ensemble. Tap repertoire will include cutting-edge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk. To promote a solid foundation in all dance styles, ballet study is offered and encouraged for all levels.

Beginner/Advanced Beginner Tap Technique
• We accept credit or debit cards. For your convenience, automatic payment for private lessons is available. Lessons will not be provided without payment. • Private Lesson Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made no less than 24 hours prior to the lesson to receive a makeup lesson (which will be scheduled at the discretion of the teacher). If a student misses a lesson without notifying a Registrar in advance, a lesson fee will be charged.
Ages: 8-15, Tuesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Beth Caprio For the beginner/advanced beginner studying the basic fundamentals of tap technique. All styles of tap are taught, from traditional rhythm tap to a broad range of tap such as Broadway theater, Fred Astaire and rhythmic styles of today. Tap shoes required.

Intermediate Jazz Technique

Beginner/Advanced Beginner Jazz Technique Ages: 8–13, Tuesdays, 6:15–7:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Madeline Fitzpatrick Children are taught the fundamentals and language of jazz in an atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and development of rhythm and isolation, which allow more freedom of expression and movement.
Intermediate/Advanced Theater Rhythm Tap Ages: 11–18, Tuesdays, 6:15–7:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Beth Caprio For the intermediate tap dancer who has mastered basic tap fundamentals such as shuffles, time steps, Irishes, Maxi Fords and cramp rolls. Students develop a personal style and musicality by creating their own rhythms and sounds. Intermediate rhythmic tap choreography is taught and dancers explore improvisation. Advanced Jazz Technique and Conditioning Prerequisite: jazz and ballet experience Ages: 12–18, Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Madeline Fitzpatrick This advanced technique class emphasizes the concept of isolation technique, a feature common to all the different and personal characteristics of jazz dance. While building strength and stamina, the essential skills of focus, projection, interpretation and style, linked to the ability to absorb and memorize choreography, are also developed.
Repertoire and Tap Technique Prerequisite: Rhythm and Sole Audition Ages: 12–18, Tuesdays, 8:15–9:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Beth Caprio Building on a strong foundation in tap and jazz, this advanced class is part of the required curriculum for the Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble. Enrollment is by audition only. Tap shoes required.
The Marcia P. Hoffman Institute Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble Ages: 11–18, Thursdays, 5:30-8:30pm Selected by audition, members of the Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble will be required to attend the Tuesday tap and jazz classes recommended by the Director. The ensemble rehearsals will take place on Thursdays, 5:30-8:30pm.* Tuition: $660.00 per term *Times within the three hours may vary dependent on casting Director: Beth Caprio Under the direction of Beth Caprio, The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute’s own resident tap ensemble meets twice a week to study and rehearse for performance opportunities. The ensemble is comprised of two groups that rehearse at appropriate levels and then combine their talents for performance opportunities. Past appearances by the ensemble have included Walt Disney World, the Bay Area Idol Talent competition, The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute’s Spring Concert on the Main Stage, and as the opening act for Maroon 5! The youth tap repertoire includes cutting-edge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk. Through education, performing, presenting tap events, collaborating with other artists, and by investing in talented youth, this ensemble strives to promote, expand and preserve the American art form of tap dance. PREPARATORY CLASSES
DRAMA TRACK
The Drama Track includes four levels that rotate curriculum on a three-year cycle to provide a varied and thorough experience. This year’s curriculum will emphasize the use of classic texts, introducing students to Shakespeare and other important authors. These classes build the essential skills and tools needed for the actor to succeed in performance and to prepare for further study. Level I: Setting the Stage Ages: 7–9, Saturdays, 11:15 am–1:15 pm Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: TBA This class focuses on developing the skill sets, theater vocabulary, and knowledge a young theater performer needs to sustain a performance, risk as a performer, develop in an ensemble art form, engage an audience, and grow as an artist through creative play, pantomime, reading, and acting out familiar stories and characters. As the class and individual students progress, work begins on developing the actors’ physical abilities, character connection, emotional comprehension, and listening and focusing skills. Course work will be showcased at the end of each semester.
Level II: Creating Connections Ages: 10–12, Saturdays, 11:15 am–1:15 pm Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: Crystal Haralambou Level II continues the refinement of skills covered in Level I while beginning the development of the student’s primary resources (the actor’s tool kit): the body, the mind, the voice and the imagination. Students explore the role that each of these tools plays in character creation, connection to setting, and listening and focusing skills. Further expansion of work in a collaborative ensemble will be linked with monologue reading and writing, and scene work. Course work will be showcased at the end of each semester.
Level IV: Focused Studies Ages: 14–18, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: Brian Shea Various Guest Artists Level IV addresses the needs of the teen actor who is preparing material for competition and college auditions. While continuing to develop the actors’ vocal and physical skills of expression, students will delve more deeply into understanding the role of the actor in professional theater. Students focus on the world of the playwright, learning to create truthful moments from a published play. Class work focuses on the growth and skill development of each individual student through monologues, duets, and student directed pieces from both original written works and classic dramatic repertoire. Guest artists, respected instructors from some of the top drama schools in the country, will conduct workshops throughout the fall and spring semesters. Drama students collaborate on performance pieces to be presented in December and April.
Technical Theater Track
Technical theater training is now offered by The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute through a limited number of high schools and local colleges. Workshops in lighting, sound, and technical design will be scheduled throughout the year. Students will be able to observe work calls and shadow professionals, preparing them for paid internships in the future.
Level III: Drama in Motion Ages: 13–16, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: Jack Holloway Level III further develops the actor’s physical skills through various techniques from Alexander, Meyerhold, and commedia dell’arte mask and body work. These techniques will be applied to the vocal and physical work of the singer/actor to assist in the creation of stronger and more truthful moments. Using scripts from Thornton Wilder, Eugene O’Neill and William Shakespeare, the application of these skills culminates in performance pieces to be presented in December and April.

VOCAL TRACK
Students are placed in a musicianship class of an appropriate level through an audition process which determines current knowledge of music literacy, sight-reading, ear training and vocal technique. The Vocal Track provides the necessary tools for vocal performance and/or further study.
The Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir Levels I & II Ages: 7–12, Saturdays, 9:00–9:45 am, musicianship class 9:45–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes musicianship class and Choir Instructors: Kathy Bawel, Bill Cusick The Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir prides itself both in entertaining its audiences and in achieving music literacy for all its members. Students are trained in sight-reading, vocal technique, and two- and three-part harmony. Performances reflect the diversity of choral repertoire, offering a variety of concerts both at Ruth Eckerd Hall and off site during the fall and spring semesters. Past performances include appearances at Disney World and Busch Gardens. Come be a part of this fun and high-level performance choir!

Bella Voce Girls’ Choir Levels III, IV & V Ages: 12–16, Saturdays, 11:30–12:00 pm, musicianship class 12:00–1:30 pm, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes musicianship class, Choir, and performance and text fees Instructor: Rosemary Collins This is an auditioned choir for intermediate girls in grades 6–10. Students in this choir will focus on vocal tone, choral blend, and independent part singing. They will receive individualized music theory study and will perform in a seasonal concert at the end of the fall semester and the Main Stage Spring Concert both as a solo ensemble and combined with Basso Voce as a mixed ensemble. Additional field trip / master class opportunities and performance opportunities may also be available. 12

Basso Voce Boys’ Choir Levels III, IV & V Ages: 12–16, Saturdays, 11:30–12:00 pm, musicianship class 12:00–1:30 pm, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes musicianship class, Choir, and performance and text fees Instructor: TBA This is an exciting opportunity for intermediate boys in grades 6–10. Students in this auditioned choir will focus on vocal tone, choral blend, and independent part singing with repertoire specific to the developing young male voice. They will receive individualized music theory study and will perform in a seasonal concert at the end of the fall semester and the Main Stage Spring Concert both as a solo ensemble and combined with Bella Voce as a mixed ensemble. This ensemble gives students an opportunity to learn varied choral repertoire and to build musicianship at a higher level. Students will have many opportunities to perform both on and off the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus, including in the Disney Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir. (Participation fees for the Disney Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir are not included in tuition.)

Center Stage Troupe Students from 14 to 18 years of age may apply to become part of this ensemble that performs a varied repertoire of music at hospitals, senior centers, and at events for charities, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the City of Clearwater. This experience can serve to broaden awareness of alternative career opportunities and the role of the arts in medicine while developing a deeper understanding of the connection between students and the community. Participants are eligible to use the Center Stage Troupe as their community service project for Bright Futures Scholarships. In partnership with Morton Plant Mease www.HOFFMANPERFORMINGARTS.org

Hospitals, this ensemble brings an atmosphere of healing to members of our community through the joy of music with songs which are selected, rehearsed and choreographed by the students and are performed at hospitals and senior centers. Audition/interview is required. Application forms are available from the Education Registrars. There is a $35 materials fee due upon enrollment.

All-State Preparation Workshops
The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute’s jazz studies are well known to the Tampa Bay area jazz community. Students come from a four-county range to participate and many past students are now studying at the country’s top music schools including Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Boston Conservatory and Loyola University. Students are placed in our multi-level Jazz Track based on their knowledge of music theory, instrument proficiency, and jazz improvisation skills. The Jazz Track includes participation in a musicianship/improvisation class and group and combo performance. Performance opportunities include the Ruth Eckerd Hall Main Stage, the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Flavor of Jazz and the Lakeside Jazz Festival.* The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. * Participation fees for the Festival are not included in tuition.

Sightsinging, listening, vocabulary, and more will be the focus of the first workshop on Saturday, September 7. Big Voices This fall, The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute launches a new program designed to nurture the talents of our classical singers by providing private lessons, group classes, keyboard instruction and master class opportunities. Under the direction of Elizabeth de Trejo, students will focus on performance elements as they prepare to showcase their talents on the stage of the newly renovated Capitol Theater. Participation is by audition only. For more information, contact the Registrars at 712.2706. Most recently, Elizabeth de Trejo has performed the role of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor with Opera Tampa to much acclaim and returned to Carnegie Hall to perform as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana. Ms. de Trejo returned to Opera Tampa for the role of Violetta in La Traviata, toured with the Florida Orchestra as guest soloist, and performed concerts of zarzuela in Mexico City and at Lincoln Center. She has worked with the Metropolitan Opera in Lulu, and in recent seasons, made her Carnegie Hall debut as a soloist under the baton of composer John Rutter. In addition to her many appearances with Opera Tampa, including the role of Rosina in Anton Coppola’s epic opera Sacco and Vanzetti, Ms. De Trejo has performed with Toledo Opera and Dayton Opera, and in Miami and Milan. Beyond her operatic repertoire, Elizabeth is a consummate recitalist and concert performer, having given numerous concerts both in Europe and the United States. She has worked with notable conductors and has appeared as guest soloist with many orchestras. She has also received numerous awards from prominent vocal competitions, including the Gerda Lissner Opera Competition in New York, the MacAllister Opera Competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in the Connecticut and Gulf Coast Regions, the Jenny Lind Soprano Competition, the Rosa Ponselle Competition, the Giulio Gari Foundation Opera Competition and the Liederkranz Competition. Ms. de Trejo is a recipient of a career grant from Career Bridges Foundation, the Sergio Franchi Foundation and the Jensen Foundation Competition. Ms. de Trejo received her Bachelor of Music from Loyola University, New Orleans and her Master of Music from Yale University. 14

JAZZ TRACK
Level I - The Ruth Eckerd Hall Lab Band Ages: 12–19, Mondays, 5:30–6:45 pm, theory and improvisation 6:45–7:30 pm, ensemble Tuition: $485.00 includes jazz class and performance group Text Fee: $17.12 includes tax Lead Instructor: Frank Williams; Associate Instructor: Chris Touchton The Lab Band is designed to give the traditional band student an opportunity to learn jazz style. Rehearsing and performing big band charts of moderate difficulty, the Lab Band offers students an opportunity to apply the concepts from jazz musicianship classes to the performance of various forms of jazz including the blues. Theory classes provide students with the foundations of music, including reading, writing and listening activities as well as mastery of elements essential for improvisation. Students in this group may audition for placement in the higher-level Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Youth Big Band when positions become available.
Basic Improvisation Building on the fundamentals of jazz literacy in which the student has demonstrated proficiency, he/she will add the elements of minor scales and arpeggios, major, minor and modal scales and arpeggios, basic chord construction including major, minor, diminished and augmented, and symbols and vocabulary specific to jazz music. In addition, participants continue development of aural skills in recognizing melodic and harmonic intervals. Level II - Ruth Eckerd Hall Big Band Ages: 14–19, Mondays, 6:45–7:30 pm, ensemble 7:30 –9:00 pm, repertoire and improvisation Tuition: $545.00 includes jazz class, performance group Text Fee: $17.12 includes tax Lead Instructor: Frank Williams; Associate Instructor: Christopher DeLeon This ensemble is comprised of the most accomplished and talented students in the Jazz Track. Participants are challenged and rewarded by studying and performing literature of the highest quality. The history and development of jazz music is explored. Performances are on the Ruth Eckerd Hall Main Stage and at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in Coachman Park and may include festival appearances.
Advanced Improvisation Advanced Improvisation is a hands-on theory experience which provides students an opportunity to use the theoretical knowledge they have mastered and apply it to their instruments. Building on the concepts previously studied (described above), participants add collegiate-level material including modal scales, chord extensions and alterations. Students learn to transcribe and play a solo performed by a jazz recording artist.
Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo Students in this advanced-level group will be featured performers at events for both Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. Possible appearances include: Capitol Theatre Opening, Circle of Stars Party, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Spring Gala, and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday’s Poster Unveiling. This combo is comprised of the most senior and experienced players. Participants in the Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo will receive full scholarships for all Jazz Track studies for the 2013–2014 season courtesy of Clearwater Jazz Holiday.

Exploratory Division The Exploratory Division allows students from toddlers through adults to select classes that suit their interests. These 10-week courses offer fun opportunities to discover talents, explore interests and experience the arts.

Kids Make Music 1 ~ Rhythms and Rhymes Ages: 15 months–3 years, Tuesdays, 1:45–2:30 pm Tuition per term: $124.50 includes Musikgarten® materials fee Instructors: Rick and Debbie Christie Children have an inborn love of rhythm and rhyme which they love to express musically. Musikgarten® curriculum, All Together Now, combines elements of listening, singing, dancing and playing simple instruments that will help you and your child enjoy musical play while developing your child’s natural talents. One caregiver per child is required.
Kids Make Music 2 ~ Sing, Listen, Move and Play Ages: 3–5 Tuesdays, 2:45–3:45 pm Tuition per term: $147.50 includes Musikgarten® materials fee Instructors: Rick and Debbie Christie Children are naturally whole persons, entirely engaged with their surroundings. The Cycle of Seasons curriculum by Musikgarten® combines creative movement, active listening, participatory singing and instrument playing with a view of the world around children to create interesting activities that stimulate imagination and enhance each child’s musical development. One caregiver per child is required.
Theater of Wonder Ages: 3–5, Saturdays, 9:00–11:00 am Tuition per term: $155.00, text/materials fee: $29.77 includes tax Instructor: Ruth Ann Rauter The Moon Tree Story is the theme for this magical exploration of Mother Nature’s changes in the autumn season. Children create their own picture books with watercolor painting and bring the story to life through song and dance, pumpkins and props, mime and drama. This creative experience nurtures each child’s sense of wonder and belonging, imagination, and whole child development. On the last day of class, students will share their version of the Moon Tree Story with family and friends.
Tiny Dancer: Ballet/Tap Combo Ages: 4–6, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm Tuition: $105.00 Instructor: Kristin McCranie Children are taught the fundamentals and language of dance in general and ballet and tap in particular in a fun, playful atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and developing a love of dance. 16

Singing Stars
For our Next Stop, Broadway students!
Ages: 7–9, Thursdays, 5:15–6:30 pm Tuition per term: $135.00 Instructor: TBA Does your child love to sing? This class prepares the young singer for performing by combining favorite songs and fun games to teach music literacy. Students enjoy singing a variety of entertaining, age-appropriate repertoire, including songs from musicals such as Annie, Oliver and Disney classics. This class culminates with a presentation at the end of the term.
Looking for an opportunity to showcase your talents? These classes “set the stage” for a Next Stop, Broadway experience. This twelve-week semester will culminate in a presentation for friends and family.
Drama Blast! Ages: 9–11, Wednesday, 6:15–7:30 pm Tuition per term: $135.00 Instructor: TBA Whether you already know your way around the stage or are just getting your feet wet, this class is a big bang of fun. We will be using a variety of theater and improv games, plus cool costume pieces and props, portraying classic comedians, dastardly villains and weird and wacky characters. All the while, students will be rehearsing the fundamentals of acting as they develop their performance skills and enter the wonderful world of stage acting.
On Camera Acting Ages: 8–10, Mondays, 5:15–6:45 pm Ages: 11–14, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:45 pm Tuition per term: $140.00 Instructor: Peggy Sheffield Ever thought about acting in films or on TV? Whether you’re new to acting or wish to take your theater training to a whole new level, our On Camera Acting class is an opportunity to learn and develop new skills, improve your auditioning process, and work with actual film and television scripts, as well as build your confidence and self-esteem. Anyone interested in professional work will receive ongoing information regarding non-union castings, agents, photographers, etc.

I Can Do That! Musical Cabaret Ages: 8–10, Wednesdays, 6:30–8:30 pm Tuition per term: $225.00 Instructors: Jarrett Koski and Hayley Matrai This semester, musical theater at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute kicks it up a notch. Music and dance are combined in this 12-week, two-hour class. Whether you are already a musical star or just want to explore your potential, this class will guide you to select and develop the Broadway style songs that will allow you to show off. Students will also explore the many dance styles used in the world of musical theater: tap, hip-hop, ballet, modern and jazz, and will apply basic choreography to Broadway musical standards to create impressive performances. By rehearsing and performing solos, duets and group numbers, students become more experienced and confident.
Spotlight: Broadway Cabaret–Putting It All Together Ages: 11-14, Thursdays, 6:00–8:30 pm Tuition per term: $275.00 Instructors: Jarrett Koski and Hayley Matrai This 12-week, two-and-one-half-hour class will expand your musical theater repertoire and hone your performance skills in both song and dance. With an emphasis on the wide range of styles associated with Broadway’s musical composers and choreographers, students will delve into dramatic interpretation and other aspects of vocal technique, as well as the iconic dance styles of the Broadway stage, as they prepare solos, duets and group numbers, all with the goal of putting together a complete musical theater presentation.

Adult Stage Acting
Ages: 19 and up, Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm Tuition: $13.50 per class Instructor: Beth Caprio For the aspiring hoofer, this class will have you doing a soft shoe to Tea for Two and shuffling off to Buffalo in no time. Come learn all styles of tap and razzle-dazzle your friends and family. Already have some tap experience? This class is tailored to challenge any level. Tap shoes required.
Ages: 19 and up, Mondays, 7:00–9:00 pm Session One: September 16–October 21 Session Two: October 28–December 9 Tuition per session: $100.00 Instructor: Stephan Alpert Veteran television (One Life to Live) and Broadway stage star Stephan Alpert will utilize classic, contemporary and original scripts in this scene study class for beginners and experienced actors. Beginners will learn the essentials of good acting and develop confidence on stage. Experienced actors will have the chance to stretch their acting muscles and explore in-depth character development while honing fundamental skills that are the foundation for great acting. Best of all, it’s fun, challenging and the ideal outlet for all of your pent-up creativity! Class size limited to 12.
Adult On Camera Acting* Ages: 18 and up, Wednesdays, 7:00–9:00 pm Tuition: $25.00 per class Instructor: Peggy Sheffield Auditions, character development, camera technique, memorization and overcoming nerves. The Clearwater Chorus, the official adult chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall, performs a variety of styles from classical to pop and has appeared at the Hall each year since its opening.
