Dear Friends, We’re thrilled you’re here! Once again, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the David and Nancy Bilheimer Capitol Theatre made Pollstar’s Top 5 venues world-wide*, a testament to your support! For almost 40 years, our organization has weathered the course, through lean years and growth spurts and everything in-between. Nothing prepared us to answer the jackpot question of 2020. When faced with an unprecedented global pandemic, economic crisis, compelling safety priorities, no road map nor end in sight, what do you do? This is what we did. We leaned on the leadership of our Board of Directors and advisors. We educated ourselves on public health solutions. We embraced the key advantage of having creative, talented and dedicated employees. We closed ranks with our community, asking how can we help? We provided free online content, virtual education and a few small-scale events at cost. Despite pay cuts and furloughs, our team volunteered to distribute groceries to those in need. They donned masks and clipboards to assist at our pop-up COVID-19 test site. In a season of hardship and anxiety, we maintained a connection with those we serve, albeit in a different and limited way, and that provided purpose and hope. It should not have surprised us. Music, dance, theater, storytelling, all art forms are about human connection; it’s in our DNA tracing back to the cave murals of early ancestors. Art builds community and in the absence of that connection, humans feel isolated, invisible and adrift. To quote a great friend of ours, GRAMMY®-winning artist Vince Gill,“Performing live in front of an audience is a two-way conversation. How lonely it would be without that.” We now begin our long journey back to financial health. Contributions to our recovery fund, membership renewals and ticket purchases all aid future programming and education opportunities. We are deeply grateful to our benefactors who enabled us to enter this crisis strong, our friends who extended patience, confidence, and financial support during our dark days and to you, our patrons, who ensure brighter days ahead.
