Inspired by the performance of Saturday Night Fever (scheduled for our Main Stage on March 18, 2016), plan to join us for a cocktail reception, a seated dinner, dancing, a silent and live auction and student entertainment as well as an encore performance by Southtown Fever Band. Record-Breaking Rankings

In March and April of 2015, Ruth eckerd Hall did more business than any other entertainment venue in the world according to Venus Today, an entertainment industry trade publication. During the same period, the Capitol Theatre ranked #5 in the world among venues with fewer than 2,000 seats. We did it by bringing Tampa Bay the very best performers, like Dave Chappelle, who sold out four shows in two evenings and broke every record at Ruth Eckerd Hall for food and beverage sales.

We love our Broadway shows, and we particularly enjoy connecting with the cast at our members-only “Cocktails with the Cast” parties in the Dress Circle. Here one of our youngest members takes a break from collecting autographs to pose with a member of the cast of Chicago.

Volunteers Saluted

www.RuthEckerdHall.com :: 727.791.7400

More than 300 volunteers were recognized at Ruth eckerd Hall’s 34th Annual Volunteer Salute in May, including two generations of the katz family. When Risa Katz Demers joined her mom, Myrna Katz, as an usher seven years ago, she was carrying on a family tradition started by her parents 15 years ago. Larry Katz passed away in 2010 but his wife and daughter continue with this important volunteer work, telling us, “Ushering never seems like work. We form special friendships and spend quality time with each other.” We are tremendously grateful. As we say all the time, we couldn’t open our doors without our volunteer ushers standing ready for every show.

Treasured Times

The songs of Martina McBride have played a very special role in the lives of Dress Circle member Monica Litrico and her daughter kathryn, whom she gave up for adoption 32 years ago. As mom and daughter reconnected in 2003 and started sharing things they had in common, they learned they both love country music and Martina McBride was – and still is – their favorite artist. So we were thrilled to have the privilege to coordinate an introduction when Monica told us that she and Kathryn were attending Martina McBride’s concert together. Monica wrote to us saying, “Thank you for helping us make an important memory the two of us will treasure forever!” Monica and kathryn, it was our pleasure.

National Champion trumpet player Matthew Taft was in for a heckuva surprise for his 15th birthday when his grandfather, Glenn Bergoffen, took him to see the world-renown jazz trumpeter Chris Botti at the Capitol Theater. Chris met Matthew and actually played for him a very special version of Happy Birthday! Connecting young musicians with their heroes is central to our mission at Ruth eckerd Hall. We fully expect Matthew to help the Tarpon Springs High School Band win another Grand National Championship and we hope to one day see him on our stages.

The Murray Theatre Grand Opening spotlighted Tampa Bay’s newest theater and marked the fulfillment of the dreams of many. The ceremony recognized the generosity of Clearwater philanthropists Ray and Nancy Murray, the State of Florida, the Expanding the Experience Capital Campaign donors and the Robert S. and Mildred Baynard Charitable Trust. The opening season of the new theater was a smashing success, with 36 performances, including our own nationally-renown production Project: Shattered Silence. The theater will also be home to our in-house theater company Hat Trick Theatre and our partnership with the prestigious GRAMMY® Museum’s Music Revolution Project. Pictured above are just a few of the 28,000 students impacted by our art education programs along with Joshua Magidson, Immediate Past Chairman of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Board of Directors, Quentin Earl Darrington, the 1994—95 Ruth Eckerd Hall Youth Scholarship winner for Musical Theater, Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO and George Cretekos, Mayor of the City of Clearwater.

Growing Again

“One year after opening the Capitol Theatre, we opened yet another theater—a children’s wonderland,” said Zev Buffman at the all-new Murray Theatre Grand Opening celebration. In addition to exterior improvements, the Murray Theatre features an enlarged and newly renovated lobby space, new concessions, updated flooring and new seats that can be configured into a myriad of arrangements. The theatre offers affordable, accessible, high-quality experiences to audiences of all ages and it will help us to change the lives of students from 5 to 85 with classes in jazz, musical theater, drama and dance. Here two students pass out souvenir pieces of the ribbon used during the ribbon-cutting ceremony to guests.

Student Showcase

At the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts, we strive to help students explore their talents and find their voices. Ella Jet, pictured here, is an alumna of our prestigious GRAMMY® Museum’s Music Revolution Project, where she wrote and performed some of the sophisticated songs that will appear on her upcoming debut album. At the grand opening of the all-new Murray Theatre, Ella performed alongside alumni and current students including the Ries Brothers and Courteney McClutchy. Thanks to these spectacular performers and our wonderful donors, this event helped raise more than $92,000 to support programming and student scholarships.

We are excited to welcome the Tampa Ballet Theatre to Ruth eckerd Hall as our new in-house ballet company. This partnership will allow us to offer high-quality ballet classes at multiple experience levels and to bring a traditional production of the Nutcracker back to our Main Stage in December with students to be cast alongside professional dancers.

Advancing Ballet

“I am thrilled about our partnership. It brings endless opportunities to our community.” – Tampa Ballet Theatre Artistic Director Lindsay Clark, pictured here with Ruth Eckerd Hall CEO Zev Buffman.

Students from our Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts joined Broadway and TV star Megan Hilty for an informal Q&A session before her sold out performance at the Capitol Theatre. The star shared insights about the entertainment world and encouraged our students to always follow their dreams. We are so grateful to Megan Hilty and to all the stars who share their time with our students. It means the world to them and to us!

Stars Sharing

Dreams Can Come True

Sylvia, a 21-year-old young woman with Down Syndrome, dreamed of one day meeting John Stamos. Our staff worked to make Sylvia’s dream come true! Here she is pictured with John, who was in town performing with the Beach Boys.

Amazing Alumni

Little did Charlie and kevin Ries know, after being selected to be part of our exclusive inaugural GRAMMY® Museum Music Revolution Project they would open for the legendary band Chicago in 10 cities! One of the many cities the Ries Brothers performed in with Chicago was Montgomery, Alabama. We’re helping to create stars of the future!

The Forger Screening Gala Benefits Students The two-time Academy Award nominee, John Travolta, hosted a gala screening of his newest film, The Forger, at the Capitol Theatre. He received a standing ovation when he announced that he would add $12,000 to the $38,000 raised to benefit our art education programs for a total of $50,000! John told the audience, “The funds raised here tonight will help young people grow as artists and inspire others to do the same.” Pictured with John is Bobby Rossi, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Programming Officer and Executive Vice President, Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO, students of the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts and Adam Nance, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Development Officer and Vice President—Development. Helping further students’ talents and dreams is central to our mission! So it made perfect sense to us to honor the star’s latest role in the film as an art forger by asking local high school and college art students to create “forgeries” of famous works of art. The five winning “forgers” each received a scholarship for their masterful interpretations. “We were honored to host this screening. We are so grateful that John recognized our work with young emerging artists and gave us not only his support but his time to benefit our kids,” said Zev.

Changing LiVEs

Tackling Tough Topics Our cutting-edge theater production continues to change the lives of students and audience members alike! The multi award-winning Project: Shattered Silence held its seventh sold-out production entitled, i am. While the piece is theatrical in nature, it is not “acted” in the traditional sense. This original theatrical experience is created each year drawing on the true life experiences of the teens involved. This year’s production focused on personal identity, with topics including personal appearance, gangs, family and death.

Shaping Futures

Sandrine was the lone participant of last year’s GRAMMY® Museum’s Music Revolution Project selected by her fellow students to attend the GRAMMY® Awards. Sandrine said, “It was an incredible experience. When Stevie Wonder went on stage, I cried. Listening to his music inspired me to start writing funk music. Just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean I have to write girly songs. GRAMMY® camp helped me find the Stevie in me. And this experience brought it full circle. For the first time I could see myself succeeding!” This year’s GRAMMY® Museum’s Music Revolution Project will hold its showcase performance on Friday, August 14 at Ruth eckerd Hall. Join us to see stars of the future!

Changing LiVEs Teachers’ Tales

every school has great teachers and Rosalia Maresca is one of ours! She has been a vocal instructor at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall for years. Rosalia has taught thousands of students throughout her career. She said, “At my age I still feel needed, productive and regarded. I have something to offer - I pass on the gift of a dream - one that is full of passion through music.” And she knows about that dream first-hand. Rosalia had a long opera and concert career internationally. And she had her own radio program in New York as well as being a member of the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.

Scholarships Awarded

This year’s Dare to Dream Awards were given to six talented scholarship winners. Each of them shared with us what these funds mean to them and their futures. every donor should feel proud to have helped these students reach for their dreams!

kylie Couture, Vocal said, “Invaluable for my college career. Assists me in studying my passions with greater freedom. And makes my aspirations a reality.” kyle Schroeder, Original Songwriter told us, “Advances my academic and music education forward as I hope to make a career out of what I love to do.” Steven estes, Instrumental Music said, “Helps fund my education. I want to be an educator at the university level.”

12

www.RuthEckerdHall.com :: 727.791.7400

Sydney Stanton, Dance told us, “Benefits my goals greatly as I work toward my academic and dance dreams of becoming a dance therapist.” Sukris Vong, Jazz said, “Enables me to go to college and take the first steps down the path of success toward performing and teaching.” Michael Mekus, Drama told us, “Makes pursuing my future and my dream that much more realistic as I strive to grow as an artist, a performer and most importantly as a person.”

Perfect Harmony

Alumnus Adam Abelson was thrilled to return to perform with The Duke University Pitchforks, an a cappella group! They performed at the all-new Murray Theatre and prior to a Friends of Music benefit concert. He said,” I am thankful to come back and perform on stages I used to dream of performing on.” Adam is the son of long time members and preferred corporate partner, David and Jeanie. And his sister Amy is also a former student of the Hoffman School pursuing her acting career in Chicago. Adam is proud to carry on his family’s tradition of keeping the arts alive in his life every day!

Healing Magic Thanks to a grant from South Arts kevin Spencer, a performer and illusionist, brought his program The Healing of Magic to town and mystified 3,000 physically and mentally challenged students and their caregivers. His program allows those labeled as ‘disabled’ to learn to do something that ‘able-bodied’ people cannot do. kevin said, “Learning magic provides them with the opportunity to feel special and offers them a tremendous boost to their self-esteem.” We were proud to bring this special program designed to reach and inspire kids with barriers to a variety of facilities in our community including UPARC, HEP and All Children’s Hospital.

thanking our donors First time loge box buyer Kim Vincent from Sarasota mistakenly went to Ruth Eckerd Hall for a Capitol Theatre show. So she was running late when she arrived at the Tommy Emmanuel performance. But she had such a great time she bought a box to two more shows mainly because of the attention and outstanding service provided by George Picard with Spectra, our food services partner. George made Kim and her guests feel right at home by providing impeccable service. He treats all patrons like they are guests in his own home. Thank you, George, for being a part of our family!

Cut-out silhouettes of Ringo, Paul, George and John spread the love and greeted our Circle of Stars members prior to RAIN®-A Tribute to the Beatles. One of the many benefits at this level of membership is the ability to attend parties before, during intermission and after select shows. And RAIN was one of those performances. These parties are sponsored by our long time corporate partner the Tampa Bay Times. Annica Keeler with TBT said, “This is exactly where we want to spend our money.” The evening was amazing with the added plus of meeting and talking to cast members. It was a night to remember!

Behind the scenes at The Forger film screening gala, John Travolta graciously took the time to pose for a photo with scholarship-winning students, Allison Ruckart, Michael Mekus and Sheldon Steele, from the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall. John even took the time to take a “selfie” with the students who wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet an internationally recognized star at any other area venue!

Members who attended the Murray Theatre Grand Opening Ceremony were treated to an intimate performance by the legendary group Sha Na Na. Due to our long standing relationship with them, they didn’t hesitate when we asked them to extend their stay. Their vocal harmony helped us get the ribbon-cutting of our newest theater off to a great start!

Home Is Where The “Art” Is

“When I arrived here 40 years ago, the local cultural landscape was pretty barren. No one who remembers those days would take our great artistic assets for granted. For the Times, Tampa Bay is home, and Ruth Eckerd Hall is one of the places that makes it special,” said Paul Tash, Chairman and CEO, Tampa Bay Times/Times Publishing Company. The Times has supported our art education and entertainment programs for over 30 years.

Positive Partnerships

“Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa is proud of our five year corporate partnership with Ruth Eckerd Hall. We are committed to supporting culture and arts in our community and understand that our success is directly impacted by the relationships we have forged with our partners. We are fortunate to have Ruth eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, which are well respected venues that our guests and employees can enjoy year-round and that focus on music education and the highest level of entertainment and performing arts,” said Dena Roady, General Manager Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa.
