THE EXHIBITION
ADVANCED DIGITAL DESIGN - BEYOND VISUALIZATION @ BEYOND MEDIA FESTIVAL, July 9-17 2009
Assistant Professor RUTH RON and her class ADVANCED DIGITAL DESIGN - BEYOND VISUALIZATION spring 2009 @ BEYOND MEDIA FESTIVAL, July 9-17 2009
The current state of rapid development in computation and communications requires that the architect not only grasps new technologies but also incorporates them into the design process. With new tools to generate virtual and physical geometries, the architect must be both proficient in these skills, and be able to explore each tool’s prospective potential. When embedded in the traditional architectural design process, digital tools are typically used after the initial design is completed. They enhance visual communication, efficiency, accuracy, and affordability of the built form. However, this use of new technology does not leverage the immense potential of the medium, nor does it respond to cultural transition due to the ongoing information revolution and advances in communication technology. The Advanced Digital Design: Beyond Visualization class requires students to progressively challenge form, space, and time. It looks into the realm of threedimensional modeling, one that is no longer a simple representation of reality but becomes a generative apparatus.
44
The class investigates advanced digital modelling techniques with the purpose of employing them in the design process. It incorporates contemporary critical readings and precedent analyses, and concludes with a series of digital design exercises. The fundamental questions asked include: Does Internet network connectivity change the architectural notion of space and function? How can new tools influence the creative process of design and allow for innovative generative strategies? How can digital technology transpose a complex set of input data to inform the intricate quality of the architectural form? How can a parametric approach to design support multiple alternatives examination? And, how does performance evaluation reshape decision making practices in architecture? Technology is utilized to produce a progressive VISION of the future of Architecture, one that employs digital design Beyond its traditional Visualization role. The course looks for an inclusive approach to digital design, combining theoretical concept, diagrammatic process, design, visual presentation, and fabrication. It emphasizes the connection between these parts in order to create a meaningful architectural environment.
Advanced Digital Design - Beyond Visualization instructor: Ruth Ron (graduate teaching assistants: Bruce Werner, Hillary Hemstreet, Sihui Ma) Ruth Ron is an assistant professor at the University of Florida, where she teaches advanced Digital Design seminars and Studio. She is an architect and artist whose work explores the borders between architecture and technology, form and media. Ruth received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, a Masters Degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York, and a Masters Degree in Interactive Telecommunication from New York University. She has worked for cutting-edge architectural firms in New York and exhibited her work in New York, Seattle, Boston, Jerusalem and Paris.(www.ruthron.com) USA

THE CONTEXT
Stazione Leopolda, Florence, Italy - a space for contemprary Art and Design events July 2009
The aim of “SPOT ON SCHOOLS” is to highlight energetic lines of research that fuel architectural education with new life. All participating schools present installations which have been conceived and created for the special purpose of the exhibition. The schools participating in the 2009 edition of “SPOT ON SCHOOLS” are: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece; Asia University, Taiwan; Ball State University, USA; California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, USA; Clemson University, USA; École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne EPFL, Switzerland; ESARQ (Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, UIC), Barcelona, Spain; Facoltà di Architettura di Pescara, Italy; NABA, Italy; Politecnico di Torino, Italy; Rhode Island School of Design, USA; RMIT University, Australia; SCI-Arc, USA; Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA; Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Portugal; University of Calgary, Canada; University of Florida, USA; University of Hong Kong; University of Thessaly, Greece.

The works shown by the schools participating in “SPOT ON SCHOOLS” prove how digital technologies, when adopted without blind optimism, can not only produce new forms of expression, but can also, above all, stimulate research and experimentation.

uth Ron is an assistant professor at the University of Florida, where she teaches advanced Digital Design seminars and Studio. She is an architect and artist whose work explores the borders between architecture and technology, form and media. Ruth received a Bachelor of Architecture from the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology, a Masters Degree in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York, and a Masters Degree in Interactive Telecommunication from New York University. She has worked for cutting-edge architectural firms in New York and exhibited her work in New York, Seattle, Boston, Jerusalem and Paris. (www.ruthron.com)
he School of Architecture recognizes design as a synthesis of thinking, analyzing and most importantly making - an iterative process that engages issues of space, humanity, sustainability, ecology, energy, urbanity, landscape, built-form, and construction. Rapid population growth, fluctuating economic prosperity, climate change, limits on traditional building materials and dwindling agricultural centers challenge designers to become more synthetic, integrative and collaborative in order to design for the challenges of the future.
T
he University of Florida is positioning to respond to these issues through studio based design methodologies that leverage collaboration with a new generation of experts in engineering, ecology, business, anthropology, energy, fine arts, medicine and construction. This is an extension of our integrating of seven building arts programs associated within the UF College of Design, Construction and Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Preservation, Sustainability and the Built Environment, Interior Design and Building Construction.
A
rmed with new robust digital technologies, UF faculty and students are exploring form in theoretical space with the ability to leverage performance modeling to test, modify and optimize architecture toward innovation while streamlining building delivery. It is doubtful that these new tools will replace the inspiration of the napkin sketch or the quick hand-drawn diagram. We are hopeful, that by leveraging digital design tools, our architecture will thrive through critical inquiry, expectation and the responsibility of engaging the complexities of low-impact culture. T
he current state of rapid development in computation and communications requires that the architect not only grasps new technologies but also incorporates them into the design process. With new tools to generate virtual and physical geometries, the architect must be both proficient in these skills, and be able to explore each tool’s prospective potential.
W
hen embedded in the traditional architectural design process, digital tools are typically used after the initial design is completed. They enhance visual communication, efficiency, accuracy, and affordability of the built form. However, this use of new technology does not leverage the immense potential of the medium, nor does it respond to cultural transition due to the ongoing information revolution and advances in communication technology.

he Advanced Digital Design: Beyond Visualization class requires students
to progressively challenge form, space, and time. It looks into the realm of three-dimensional modeling, one that is no longer a simple representation of reality but becomes a generative apparatus.
T
he class investigates advanced digital modelling techniques with the purpose of employing them in the design process.
H
ow can a parametric approach to design support multiple alternatives examination? And, how does performance

echnology is utilized to produce a progressive VISION of the future of Architecture, one that employs digital design Beyond its traditional Visualization role. The course looks for an inclusive approach to digital design, combining theoretical concept, diagrammatic process, design, visual presentation, and fabrication. It emphasizes the connection between these parts in order to create a meaningful architectural environment. project website: web.dcp.ufl.edu/rron/ arc3181_09/rhino_index.html
