CES 2015: All the latest stories from the biggest tech and gadget show on Earth CES 2015: All the latest stories from the biggest tech and gadget show on Earth The Consumer Electronics Show is, after all, the world’s biggest tech and gadget expo, and from 6th-9th January Sin City (and the sprawling Las Vegas Convention Center) becomes the venue for most of the world’s electronics giants – as well as a host of startup hopefuls – to tease their finest upcoming products and services. CES Unveiled is the opening press event of the show where brands big and small showcase a few key launches on trestle tables in a packed-out hotel function room. Traditionally, it’s where you’ll find some of the quirkiest gadgets of the show, and this year was no different. Television announcements and CES go hand-in-hand, and this year is no exception. Make no mistake: there are some exciting goggle-boxes being launched in Las Vegas right now. Sony, for instance, has unveiled a trio of ultra-thin (4.9mm at their thinnest points), near-frameless 4K televisions: the XBR X900C (55in and 65in in size) and the XBR X910C (75in). These new models all come with the Android TV operating system, voice search via the remote and PlayStation Now, Sony’s pretty astounding game-streaming service that lets you play PS3 games from the cloud. Sony also launched a handful of other, slightly less interesting 4K TVs. LG’s great Korean rival Samsung has, as usual, come out of the gates with a strong televisual showing at CES 2015. The company has introduced a new range of curved 4K TVs that it calls “SUHD”, and claims that its contrast, brightness and colour performance will knock existing Samsung sets out of the park. SUHD TVs will offer a remastering engine that automatically adjusts brightness depending on the scene; nothing new there, we know –
Page 2
but Samsung claims it’ll deliver darker blacks and 2.5 times the brightness of a conventional screen. The TVs (of which there are nine models in total ranging from 48in to 88in) will be powered by Samsung’s own Tizen operating system. Tizen is open source, meaning developers will be able to make their own smart TV apps. All these 4K TV sets are very exciting, of course, but the problem of content remains: there just isn’t enough 4K stuff around to watch. Panasonic is trying to remedy this, however: the company has taken the wraps off a prototype 4K Blu-ray player at CES and, while it’s keeping its card close to its chest regarding specs, it has revealed that (like the LG sets mentioned above) it will support High Dynamic Range video quality. One issue Panasonic is facing – and perhaps this explains why the player is still a prototype – is that the Blu-ray Disc Association is yet to finalise the specifications of a 4K Blu-ray format. One thing that should hopefully be finalised soon is what actually constitutes 4K or Ultra HD. The UHD Alliance, a collective of companies including LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Disney, Netflix, Dolby and more, is set to generate a set of standards in the months to come, so that consumers will know that what they’re buying actually constitutes a “real” 4K product. And it’s not a TV per se, but HP’s new 1080p Zvr Virtual Reality Display is one smart screen. Like any 3D screen, it lets you view stereoscopic 3D content through a pair of glasses, but here you can interact with onscreen objects using a stylus. HP also launched a range of 4K and 5K displays, intended for use as PC monitors. Sharp clearly doesn’t think 4K offers enough detail. The Japanese company has unveiled an 80in monster screen (due to go on sale later in 2015) that it claims is closer
The Coto de Caza News
to “8K” quality – despite having the same resolution as most 4K TVs. The secret is in the sub-pixels, which Sharp says boosts the detail levels massively. Not impressed? Well, the company also showed off a prototype 85in TV with an actual native 8K resolution of 7680 x 4320. It says it’s the first TV maker to comply with 8K test broadcasts, and hopes to sell its screen by 2016. Smart phones: With Mobile World Congress 2015 mere weeks away, it seems many smartphone makers are keeping their mobile powder dry during CES. However, there have been a few noteworthy announcements... LG has officially launched the successor to its bendy G Flex smartphone. Yes, the company is bringing flexy back in the form of the G Flex 2, a curved phone with a 5.5in Plastic OLED screen. The G Flex 2’s screen is sharper (1080p as opposed to 720p) and stronger than its predecessor’s, and its self-healing rear has been improved so that minor scratches disappear in 10 seconds as opposed to three minutes. Other improvements include a 13MP camera with LG’s laser autofocus system and dual LED flash, as well as the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit processor, which sits alongside 3GB of RAM and either 16GB or 32GB of storage. The battery has a capacity of 3000mAh and is non-removable. Check out our hands-on review of the LG G Flex 2 here. Asus, meanwhile, has launched two new smartphones. First up, the Asus Zenfone Zoom which, as its name suggests, is a photographyfocussed (no pun intended) mobile with a 3x optical zoom (extremely rare on a phone) laser autofocus and optical image stabilisation. The rear camera has a 13MP sensor, the frontfacer a 5MP sensor. There’s a 5.5in full HD screen, Intel Atom processor and 3000mAh battery on board, and
the Zenfone Zoom is expected in the second quarter of 2015, priced at around US$349. The Asus Zenfone 2, meanwhile, runs a little cheaper at US$199, but despite its affordable price tag it’s no slouch in the specs department: 5.5in full HD display, 64-bit Atom quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 13MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. Oh, and we’ve had hands-on time with it: check out our initial thoughts her Most – but not all – of the new wearable tech unveiled at CES 2015 thus far has been wrist-worn. We’ll look at smartwatches and their ilk below, but one company to buck the wristy trend is Sony, which allowed us to get our eyes on its SmartEyeglass augmented reality specs. Are they just a rip-off of (the apparently moribund) Google Glass? Find out what we thought in our hands-on. Sony also revealed its stainless steel SmartWatch 3 – not an entirely new device, but a timely (again, no pun intended) update of the already available model with a nicer strap, essentially. If you already own a SmartWatch 3, you can just buy the new housing and pop your device in. Instant upgrade. Sticking with smartwatches, Alcatel has introduced its promised Watch at CES, and at US$149 it’s temptingly affordable. But the low price isn’t its only boon: it’s also a cross-platform device that’ll work with both Android and iOS devices. Moving onto fitness-centric wearables, there’s the crystalline Swarovski/Misfitmashup dubbed the Swarovski Shine. Made from aircraftgrade aluminium, it features a watch function as well as the ability to track your activity and sleep. There are two versions of the device: one that carries a six-month battery and one that doesn’t need manual charging at all, thanks to a solar charger. The Shine collection will go on sale in the spring. Continued on page 3.

CES 2015: All the latest stories from the biggest tech and gadget show on Earth Garmin has gone gaga when it comes to fitness wearables, launching no fewer than four wristbands: the Vivofit 2 (due March 2015) is a minor update of the current Vivofit; the Vivoactive (also due March) is an entry-level GPS watch that also tracks calories and steps taken (and it’s waterproof to 50m); the Fenix 3 (out January) is a multisport GPS watch compatible with heart-rate sensors; and the high-end Epix (due February) is a sports watch with a colour screen and 8GB of memory for installing third-party apps. Taking fitness wearables in a slightly different direction is the AmpStrip, which is essentially a sticking plaster designed to be worn all day and all night on your torso – where your heartbeat is usually strongest. This waterproof sensor gathers all sorts of data, which it can feed to its accompanying AmpInsights iOS or Android app (it’s also compatible with third-party services like Strava and Runkeeper). It doesn’t have GPS, but it tracks heart-rate, cadence, calories burned, sleep and skin temperature – and it only requires taking off for charging once a week. The Withings Activité Pop is a lot like the current Activité (which we have called the “most gorgeous fitness tracker”) but is cheaper – thanks to its materials and build, it’s £120 as opposed to £320. It’ll be available from February. We also have a round-up of other fitness-related wearables unveiled at CES right here, including models from InBody, HealBe and Zensorium. Samsung has confirmed it’ll be launching a new range of curved soundbar speakers at CES 2015, alongside an all-new type of speaker that the company says “fills entire rooms with sound” no matter its placement. The WAM7500 and WAM6500 speakers use “Ring Radiator” technology that projects sound in a 360-degree arc. The WAM7500 is a “stand-type” model designed to be placed permanently, while the WAM6500 is portable and battery-powered. British hi-fi company Meridian Audio has announced that lossless streaming service Tidal, which features CD-quality music, is coming to the Meridian Sooloos system “from early 2015”. The company also announced that anyone who buys the Meridian Explorer 2 USB DAC will enjoy a three-month free trial of Tidal. During CES 2015, Tidal will be used to demonstrate Meridian’s MQA
lossless streaming format. Speaking of MQA, Imagination Technologies has just announced that its Caskeid wireless audio streaming service will support the format. That means lossless streaming on a variety of Caskeid-enabled products from the likes of Pure Digital, Onkyo and, yes, Meridian. Chord Electronics, meanwhile, has loosed a brace of new hi-fi products at CES. First up is the Hugo TT DAC/headphone amp, a large “desktop-oriented” device that’ll turn your computer into an audiophile powerhouse. The Hugo TT features twin headphone outputs, XLR outputs and USB-B inputs. Chord’s second product is smaller and more affordable: the 2Qute DAC combines two existing products in one box: the original Hugo DAC/ headphone amp and the Qute EX standalone DAC. Good news for streaming fans: Google Cast for audio is set to launch later in 2015. Working in a similar way to the company’s video casting ability, it’ll allow you to fling music from your phone or tablet (Android, iOS and web apps are all supported) to a range of supported TVs, hi-fis, soundbars and speakers. Google Play Music, Deezer, Rdio, Pandora and TuneIn will be among the apps supported at launch this spring – but interestingly there’s no mention yet of Spotify. Sony, meanwhile, has launched a new Walkman – and it’s aimed squarely at audiophiles. The Sony Walkman ZX2 supports Hi-Res and lossless formats, features 128GB of expandable storage and will cost a whopping US$1,000 when it arrives this spring. Audio-Technica has also gone down the Hi-Res route, launching a high-end new set of headphones called the MSR7 alongside the
AT-PHA100 Portable Headphone Amplifier. When combined (and paired with a source such as a PC, Mac or smartphone) they’re designed to offer high-end hi-fi performance without the need for a huge, hulking hi-fi. Monster has a new speaker that’ll have you looking forward to warmer times: the SuperStar BackFloat. Connecting wirelessly with your phone, it can float away in your pool pumping out stereo sounds – and doubles as a speakerphone. Nvidia has announced a new mobile processor. It’s called the Tegra X1 and it’s the first mobile chip that offers a teraflop of power (15 years ago, you’d have needed a 500,000W supercomputer the size of a suburban house to deliver a teraflop – the X1 is thumbnail-sized and consumes 15W of power). Expect to see the X1 used in tablets, smartphones and self-driving cars soon. Nest, maker of the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect smoke/ CO2 detector, has announced that a raft of third-party products now offer compatibility with their own. Imagine: a washing machine that knows when you’re home and automatically switches to quiet mode. Well, that’s now a reality. Welcome to your future smart home. And hey, creative types: there’s a brand new 3Doodler – dubbed the 3Doodler 2.0 – that’s just been announced and wants to tackle all your 3D drawing needs. Smaller, lighter and more flexible than its predecessor, it’s available for Kickstarter backing right now. The Misfit Bolt is a smart bulb that reminds us a lot of the Philips Hue smart lighting system – but unlike Hue it doesn’t require a central hub to work. Each Bolt bulb works as a standalone product, controllable from your Android or iOS tablet or
smartphone. The bulbs can display millions of colours and are available for pre-order in the US now. BMW has shown off its new techladen i3. It features four laser sensors which let it have a 360 degree view of its surroundings. This lets it navigate around pillars, pedestrians and trolleys when you’re parking - all without requiring any input from you. Even better, when you’re returning to the car park with bags of shopping, just give your smartwatch a verbal command and it’ll drive itself right up to you. Ghost chauffeur? We like the sound of that. Parrot has unveiled the RNB6, an in-car infotainment system that’ll fit in most vehicles. It runs on Android 5.0 and is compatible with both the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay platforms. It also integrates with your car’s diagnostic systems and works with a safety dashcam that constantly records the road ahead. Toyota is being all altruistic at CES. In an effort to increase the proliferation of hydrogen-fuel cars on the roads, the company is to grant royalty-free use of 5,680 global patents related to the technology from now until 2020. That means other car manufacturers have an easier route to getting in on the efficient gassy car act. And that’s good news. Gaming BMW has shown off its new techladen i3. RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA PARAMEDICS SHOW EXTRA COMPASSION FOR INJURED CYCLIST
While being loaded into an ambulance by Rancho Santa Margarita paramedics around 7pm Monday evening, an injured man requested that they also take his bicycle along to the hospital so he would have transportation home after
his hospital treatment. The private ambulance crew first denied his request saying that there was barely enough room for the crew and its’ equipment and that the bicycle could not be transported with the patient. The man then refused
to be transported to the hospital as he feared that his expensive bicycle might be taken while he was gone. As the crew was unloading the man from the ambulance, Rancho Santa Margarita paramedics stepped in and persuaded the ambulance staff to
take the bicycle with him for his ride to the hospital, to which they agreed. Both the patient and the bicycle were reloaded into the ambulance and sped off towards the hospital.

How to Jump Rope Your Way to Fitness! By Kristie Leong M.D. Are you looking for a fun and effective fitness routine that works almost every muscle in your body? You might want to give jump roping a try! A jump rope fitness routine can be carried out almost anywhere and there’s no need for fancy equipment, special clothing, or a gym membership. Plus, it’s fun to relive your childhood when it was so entertaining to jump to a variety of chants. You’ll forget it’s even exercise until you see the pounds start rolling off! Did you know jump roping is one of the best cardiovascular workouts around? You’ll love the fact that only 30 minutes of a moderately paced jump rope fitness routine burns around 300 calories. It’s a great way to develop your endurance, increase your aerobic capacity, tone the muscles of the lower body, and lose weight at the same time. Before you begin your jump rope fitness routine, it’s important to select the right equipment. A good pair of athletic shoes, preferably a crosstrainer with extra support for the ball of the foot, is critical to prevent excessive strain on the joints from the repetitive activity. You should select a jump rope of appropriate length for your height and with the right amount of weight. Some jump ropes are weighted which are probably best avoided since they can be rather difficult to manipulate, particularly for a beginner. Ideally, you should be able to test out your jump rope in the store before purchasing it. It’s important you feel comfortable with your selection since there are a variety of jump rope variations available. Discuss the different options with your sporting goods
dealer and have him help you choose the best jump rope for your height and build. There are a variety of jump rope moves you can do, but I would advise sticking to the basic jump in the beginning. The basic jump is performed by bringing the rope over your head and jumping once with bent knees for each turn of the rope. You can vary the pace of the basic jump based on your fitness level with the goal of picking up speed over time. You should land lightly on the balls of your feet with knees bent slightly. Try to maintain a steady rhythm, staring straight ahead while you jump, not looking down at your feet. Start out jump roping for 10 minutes at a slow pace and gradually work up to 30 minutes at a more rapid pace. There are a variety of ways to
make your jump rope fitness routine more interesting. I like to play lively music in the background which is a great motivator and makes the time go by more quickly. Occasionally, I’ll jump rope while watching a favorite television show, but I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re a beginner since you need to concentrate on your form. You can also do other off the wall things to enhance your fitness jump rope routine such as singing silly songs or childhood jump rope chants. If you need more ideas on jazzing up your fitness routine, read this article.Whatever works for you and makes your workout more fun is allowed! Here’s in hopes your jump rope fitness routine will become an important part of your daily routine and will help you meet your fitness goals while having fun!

CALIFORNIA’S MISSIONS DEPICTED IN 1883 ETCHINGS, PAINTINGS AS OLD AS 1886, FEATURED IN THE IRVINE MUSEUM’S UPCOMING EXHIBITION The Irvine Museum presents California: This Golden Land of Promise January 24 through May 21, 2015, an exhibition that will display paintings dealing with the state’s remarkable history, with many featuring California’s historic Spanish missions. The earliest views of the California missions in the exhibition are selections from a set of etchings by Henry Chapman Ford (18281894), published in 1883. The oldest painting on display is the courtyard of the Mission San Juan Capistrano, painted by Alexander Harmer (18561925) in 1886. At the time, what is now one of the most beautiful gardens in California is shown as a dry, dusty yard, with just a few geraniums growing against the pillars of the arcade. From the 1540s, California was a

distant colony of Spain, somewhat isolated from the mother country until the missions were built. Although the missions in Baja California are older, the first mission in what is now the state of California was founded in San Diego in 1769. For the next fifty years, 21 missions were founded throughout California, stretching as far north as Sonoma County. They were all connected by El Camino Real, the Royal Road or the King’s Highway, which today approximates Highway 101. In 1821, Mexico declared its independence from Spain and claimed California as a province. In the early 1830s, a series of laws secularized the missions, thus taking them and their vast land holdings away from the Catholic Church, and through the land grant system, were given to large cattle ranchos. The Rancho Period, lasting until the American conquest of California in 1848, was characterized by vast ranchos in Southern California, some comprising over 100,000 acres or more. At this time, California’s main product was cattle, not for the meat but for the hides, horns, and fat, which was turned into tallow. By 1850, when California became the 31st State of the Union, most

missions were abandoned and in ruins. Through an executive order, President Lincoln returned what was left of the mission buildings to the church. It was not until the 1890s, when artists began to portray the missions as relics of California’s romantic past that a serious effort was made to preserve and restore them. Senator Pat Bates Welcomes Governor Brown to Historic Fourth Term Senator Pat Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement today after attending the inauguration of Governor Jerry Brown, where his inaugural address also served as his constitutionally required annual report to the Legislature: “I congratulate Governor Brown as he begins his historic fourth term. Our state will have to make many key decisions this year on issues such as job creation, education, and transportation, and I know we can work together to achieve meaningful progress. “As the Governor looks towards securing his legacy, I hope he will successfully resist the urge from those who want to raise taxes yet again and spend us back into multibillion dollar deficits. With some fiscal common sense, we can further pay down debt and prioritize spending for essential services such as schools, law enforcement, and infrastructure – now and in the future.” Senator Patricia C. Bates represents the 36th Senate District in the California Legislature, which includes the Orange County communities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano; and the San Diego County communities of Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, and Vista.

Vocalist Melissa Manchester Performs on KSBR’s “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly” TV Show Over 300 enthusiastic fans turned out this past Saturday to see Grammy Award winning vocalist Melissa Manchester appear on Saddleback College radio station KSBR 88.5 FM’s “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly”. The program kicked off the shows fifth season and was broadcast live on the radio from the beautiful McKinney Theatre on the campus of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. The recorded television show will air on Saddleback College’s SCTV Channel 39 Friday and Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. throughout the Cox Communication cable system in South Orange County. During the one-hour interview, Manchester told stories of her career, how she started in the music business as well as her days with Barry Manilow and Bette Midler. She also sang songs off her new self-made c/d “You Gotta Love the Life” (release date: Feb. 10, 2015) as well as some old time favorites. “You Gotta Love the Life” is the singer songwriter’s first album since 2004 celebrating 40 years of making music. The album offers a variety of songs performed with legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Keb’ Mo’, Dionne Warwick, Dave Koz, and Joe Sample, in one of his last recordings. “You Gotta Love the Life” is the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer’s first new studio album since “When I Look Down That Road”. This record marks her only collaboration with Hal David for what turned out to be his last recorded lyric. Manchester produced the album with guitarist Terry Wollman co-producing. Wollman along with Sue Holder appeared with Manchester lending a great backup duo for some beautiful musical sounds. Manchester’s status as one of popular American music’s most enduring artists is exceptional both for her longevity and versatility. Her recording of the Peter Allen/Carole Bayer Sager anthem “Don’t Cry Out Loud” delivered her first Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance in 1979, and she won the award in the same category four years later for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You”. Two of her songs, “Through the Eyes of Love” and “The Promise”, were nominated for Academy Awards in the same year. After the show, Manchester signed autographs and posed for photos with many of her fans. Other guests appearing on Breakfast with Gary and Kelly were Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology Bart McHenry and the new Director of Broadcast Services Jim Rondeau, as well as Ms. Senior California 2014-2015 Dr. Gayla Kalp Jackson. McHenry and Rondeau talked about the upcoming shows the Saddleback College Theater Department will be performing (the public is always invited to come -more info at www.saddleback.edu/arts), Rondeau’s new appointment as Director of Broadcast Services, KSBR Radio as well as the upcoming KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival and Taste of the Bash on May 24th. Jackson discussed the Ms Senior California Pageant, how it raises the level of awareness for senior women as they have reached the “Age of Elegance”. The pageant is for those women over 60 years of age; they are judged on evening gown, interview, philosophy of life and talent. The Vice President of Research and Development at the KSBR Test Kitchens Tom Riehl was featured for “Cooking for Kelly” segment giving everyone a good laugh. With his comedic playfulness, he showed Kelly and Gary how to shuck clams. Special guests in the audience were Bernard Fowler, member of the Rolling Stones and City of Mission Viejo Council member Wendy Bucknum. Past guests on “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly” have included Ray Parker Jr., Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Bobby Caldwell, Al Jarreau, Jonathan Butler, Debbie Reynolds, Linda Evans, David Benoit, Peter White, Diane Schuur, Keiko Matsui, Brian Culbertson, Spencer Day, and more. KSBR is a community service of Saddleback College. For more information on the Radio on TV monthly series and how to become part of the studio audience please tune to 88.5 KSBR or visit their website at www.KSBR.org Page 12

virtually split the tooth. Later, after years of chewing trauma, the nerve becomes irritated from this microscopic splitting during chewing or clenching. This hypersensitivity is usually manifested as temperature sensitivity. Just replacing the filling doesn’t help because the cracks are already there. A crown, on the other hand, holds the tooth together, like the band on a barrel, so the splitting activity stops. If the trauma to the nerve of the tooth didn’t damage that nerve irreparably, which would necessitate a root canal (removing the damaged nerve from the root of the tooth), a crown is all that’s necessary to allow you to return to the pleasures of ice cream-eating. There are also instances where a tooth is sensitive to cold or even sweets, and a fracture is not the culprit. This is most often a result of root sensitivity, where the root of the tooth is exposed due to gum recession. There is also a setting on my soft-tissue laser (Periolase) for treating teeth that are cold sensitive due to root sensitivity. Dr. Tessier says “If this article brings forward a question, please call me and we can chat. Consultation appointments are always complimentary. Please don’t hesitate to call my office if you have any questions about this process, or any other of the modern technologies we can use to make your smile whiter and your day better.” Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. A patient of long-standing came in s e v e r a l weeks ago, complaining that her teeth were sensitive, generally, all over mouth. When I visually Dr. Michael Tessier inspected her mouth, there was no evidence of cracked teeth, or tired-old fillings, or bad crowns, or gum recession- all the usual suspects. There was nothing that I could see that might contribute to tooth sensitivity. We treated the sensitive teeth on the right wide with the laser. When she came back two weeks later, she said that she couldn’t wait to have me do the left side, because all the sensitivity was gone on the right side. Positively amazing. So, when you eat ice cream, or drink a margarita, one of your molars, or maybe even a bicuspid, is sensitive. When you take that problem tooth to your friendly, neighborhood dentist, and he says you need that tooth capped (or crowned). What’s that about? When someone drills on a crystalline structure, like glass, or porcelain, or tooth enamel, the heat of friction from the drilling device puts microscopic fractures in the material. When a dentist has to put a big filling in a tooth, those little fractures pre-dispose that tooth to further fracture. The fractures

the Best Diet for Permanent Weight Loss By John Phillip Many people proclaim to have the best diet or lifestyle plan to achieve permanent weight loss, yet nearly 95% of those who begin a new dietary program fail to hit their goal or keep the weight off for good. To a large extent genetics are to blame, as the basic survival mechanism which has allowed us to thrive for generations is also to blame for our weight loss failures. Drink Water Before Each Meal Research now confirms that one of the simplest methods for healthy weight loss may offer hope to the millions who struggle with their weight, and is simple and inexpensive. Research presented to the American Chemical Society shows that drinking 2 cups of water right before each meal is enough to help dieters lose an additional 5 pounds over a 90 day period. Information from this study concludes that the water is enough to fill the stomach before eating so you feel full and don’t over eat. Experts advise everyone to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water each day, as this supports healthy liver function and is essential for proper fat metabolism. Drink More Water, Less Diet Drinks Another benefit from drinking water before each meal is that it helps eliminate the temptation to drink sweetened beverages or diet drinks which are known to sabotage weight loss efforts. Water before meals is a great way to stimulate weight loss with minimal effort, but in order to achieve permanent results, you need to make the correct choice between quick weight loss plans and a sustainable fat burning program. Quick Weight Loss Plan There are certain circumstances when you may need to resort to a quick weight loss plan. Nutritional experts warn that rapid weight loss is not the way to drop those extra pounds as they typically involve diet pills or meals which are nutritionally imbalanced and exclude important food groups. People look to rapid weight loss programs so they can look good for a special event or to fit into a favorite bathing suit. While these may be good reasons to begin your weight loss journey, it’s important to avoid commercially marketed fat burning pills and synthetic metabolism boosters. Some may deliver quick

results, but the weight loss cannot be sustained and these artificial supplements will damage your health in the long term. Permanent Weight Loss Program A fat burning weight loss plan is the only method which will deliver healthy weight reduction. Quick weight loss schemes help you to lose water and muscle mass, neither of which leads to sustainable weight reduction for life. The best way to drop weight and burn fat is to follow a sensible, reduced calorie diet and compliment with regular physical activity. Plan to lose between 1 and 2 pounds each week. If you find yourself losing more weight, then increase your calories, as weight lost too quickly is a sign that you’re wasting precious muscle tissue and not actually burning body fat. Men need 1800 calories per day, while women should plan for 1500 calories. Ensure that your menu is well balanced, including healthy options from all food groups and concentrated with plenty of fresh leafy greens and vegetables. The most common weight loss mistake is losing weight too rapidly. Once you’ve made the decision to begin a new weight loss lifestyle, weight yourself twice each week and keep a chart of your progress, making sure that you don’t drop too fast. Stay away from damaging diet pills and fad diets, in favor of healthy meal options. You’ll enjoy the health benefits of a well planned, steady weight reduction program leading to permanent and sustainable weight loss for life.

Tart Cherries – Today’s Hottest Super Fruit Now more than ever, Americans are aware of health and nutrition and look to their diets as a means to get nutrients naturally. According to top trend forecasters, antioxidants remain a major indicator of health-promoting foods, with nine out of ten of adults aware of antioxidants, and one-third making a strong effort to consume more, according to the study “Mintel 2009; Multi-Sponsor Surveys, 2010.” Known for their powerhouse of antioxidants, tart cherries have emerged as one of today’s hottest super fruits. Today there are more than 50 scientific studies specifically on tart cherries, and with the help of leading health expert Dr. Wendy Bazilian, DrPH, RD, the cherry industry recently launched “The Red Report,” a new scientific look at the power of tart cherries. “The power of this Super Fruit is undeniable,” said Dr. Bazilian, author of “The SuperFoodsRx Diet: Lose Weight with the Power of SuperNutrients.” Dr. Bazilian explains that what is really amazing is how far tart cherries have come over the last few years. “For example, the fruit has long been anecdotally associated with pain relief benefits. Today, there’s a strong and significant body of evidence backing that up.” Beyond their health benefits, tart cherries are shaping key nutrition
trends. “A growing body of research suggests that the powerful antioxidants in tart cherries are linked to a broad range of benefits – antiinflammation, heart health, pain relief, exercise recovery and more. Some of the latest reports call out the tart cherry as ‘the’ Super Fruit to watch,” says Dr. Bazilian. Good Reasons to Eat Red Available every day of the year in dried, frozen and juice forms, tart cherries can be a powerful way to boost fruit intake and meet current dietary recommendations of two daily fruit servings. Experts suggest consuming 1 to 2 servings of cherries daily can help provide some of the health benefits identified in the research. Top 10 Tips for a Healthier Heart The message that a healthy lifestyle helps protect your heart isn’t new. If you’d like to do more to take care of your heart, here are 10 ways technology can make that easier. 1. Stop Smoking. Apps such as Smoke Reducer for Android, and iQuit for iPhone can help you wean off tobacco. You can also use the Firefox add-on Quitomzilla, which shows you how much money you save by not smoking, the number of cigarettes not smoked, and the overall time since your last smoke. 2. Stay Within a Healthy Weight Range. Make it easier to monitor your weight-loss progress with the iHealth Wireless Scale. You can track your weight over time, and see results in relation to daily activity, time of day, diet, exercise, and more. The scale lets you set a milestone and share your results with doctors, fitness buddies and family. The free companion iHealth Scale app works with iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. They estimate Page 22
your blood alcohol content and let you know whether or not you should drive. To monitor your caffeine intake, try the Caffeine Zone 2 for iPhone and iPad, or the Caffeine Monitor app for Android. 4. Take Care of Your Teeth. Research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and heart disease. Go online and check the American Dental Association’s database at www.ADA.org to find oral health care products that have the ADA seal of approval. At the ADA website, you can also watch videos on a variety of oral health care topics. 5. Keep Tabs on Your Blood Pressure. 6. Reduce Stress. Try a portable biofeedback device, like the StressEraser, to help you relax by synchronizing your breathing and your heart rate. If having too much on your plate and too many interruptions causes you stress, try Quiet Hours. It lets you shut down your computer’s communication apps, like instant messaging, for a specified period of time.
7. Exercise Regularly. The Online Activity Tracker from the American Heart Health Association lets you create a personalized walking plan, log time or distance traveled, plot and save walking routes, and more. Check it out at www.startwalkingnow.org. You can also use the AHA Walking Paths app for Android and iPhone.
8. Eat Right. Tracking the foods you consume helps you better understand your caloric and nutritional intake. The Lose It! app for the iPhone allows you to enter and track your meals and snacks, and keep track of your weight loss progress and goals via the app, as well as access your account online. Visit www.loseit.com for more information. Offering many of the same capabilities, Android phone users can use the Diet Assistant app at www.
dietassistantapp.com. 9. Make Sleep a Priority. Not getting enough sleep can raise your blood pressure and make it more likely you’ll have a stroke or heart attack. Learn more about your sleep patterns with a sleep monitor. You can try a headband monitor, such as the Zeo, (www.myzeo.com), or an armband monitor such as the SleepTracker, (www.sleeptracker.com). Each keeps track of your sleep cycle and helps you wake up at the optimal time. 10. Know Your Family History. Knowing your family’s medical history can help you identify patterns that might be relevant to your own heart health. There are a number of online tools such as My Family Health Portrait at https://FamilyHistory.hhs.gov to help you gather and store that information.

A fun approach to teaching kids nutrition wisdom As children across the country head back to school, life for families becomes a little more hectic. Just because days are busy, don’t let nutrition fall by the wayside. Teaching children nutritious eating habits now can mean a lifetime of health, plus it can be a lot of fun to eat, laugh and spend time together. “The more parents can do to involve children in the process, the decisions on what they are eating and where their food comes from, the better off they will be at helping them learn reverence and appreciation for food,” says Anni Daulter, professional cook, nutrition expert, and author of several books, including “The Organic Family Cookbook.”
Here are some simple yet effective tips from Daulter to get your kids excited about nutrition and help them make good food choices: 1. Make mealtime special “In our fast-paced lives, we have somehow lost the concept that eating is not just about the actual food. It’s about the connection, the time spent enjoying every bite, laughing, talking and sharing. Our families need this time together,” Daulter says. Create a routine. Consider starting dinner at a similar time each night. Designate different nights for different types of meals, such as vegetarian Monday, or make-your-own pizza Saturdays. Have children help with the meal prep and cleanup, if ageappropriate. Light a candle during dinner, and allocate plenty of time for conversation - it’s one of the best ways to bond with loved ones. 2. Adopt a healthy morning routine While most families are timecrunched on weekday mornings, it’s important to make time for breakfast so kids get the nutrition they need before heading to school. Healthy breakfasts incorporate whole grains, protein, fresh fruit, and supplements that support brain and body health. “Supplements can be an easy way for mom and dad to ensure that their children get the important nutrients they need, especially during busy mornings,” says Daulter. “I
recommend giving kids a boost of brain-building nutrition with a kidfriendly omega-3 supplement. I like chewable, strawberry-flavored Nordic Naturals Children’s DHA. This essential nutrient is brain food, proven to support brain growth and health. Additionally, omega-3s support a healthy immune and nervous system, too.” 3. Create tasty school lunches “When your children are fed better, they learn better,” says Daulter. “Their bodies react to being fed good pure foods that give them the fuel they need to get through each and every school day.” Save time by making lunches the night before or do a big Sunday cutand-chop day for raw ingredients throughout the week. Here is a sample of what you’ll find in Daulter’s children’s lunch baskets: Black Bean Soup Lunch * Classic Caesar salad * Homemade wheat parmesan chips * Raw: Asian pears and clementines 4. Have healthy snacks on hand “Kids bodies tend to be more in tune with their internal signals and they inherently seem to know that they need more little meals throughout the day, rather than three big meals,” Daulter says. “Eating smaller portions frequently throughout the day provides more energy when we need it and is easier
for our bodies to digest.” Daulter keeps several small kids tables throughout the house so her children can nibble on snacks while they continue to play. What sorts of things does she like to feed her kids for snacks? Nuts, homemade fruit rollups, pumpkin seeds, veggie popcorn, fresh fruits, carrot sticks, and cheese are all healthful snacks that keep kids’ bellies full. 5. Teach healthy eating habits through activity “My kids and their friends love to cook and help us prepare meals, and the more we include them in the process, the more invested they become in their own health,” says Daulter. You may be surprised by how excited your children get by being involved in the entire meal process. When you go to the grocery store or farmers market, have children help pick out veggies. If you grow your own, let them pick the produce and help wash, peel and prep it for meals. “Even the youngest child can help mix in flour for fresh bread or learn to whip her own honey butter,” says Daulter. “These tasty teachings will not only give them practical and valuable life skills, but will leave them with loving memories of family cooking days that were spent laughing, creating, and of course, eating!”
Diet Food to Help Men Lose or Maintain Their Weight By Tamara McRill Salad and fruit may be diet food staples, but weight-watching men often desire a little more heft in their chow. There are fat burning foods for men that won’t require you to gnaw on lettuce all day. These manly diet foods will control hunger or boost metabolism, to help shed unwanted pounds. As with any diet, you may want to consult your physician to ensure none of these diet foods will negatively effect your health, allergies or medication. Fat Burning Food for Men #1: Soup One of the best diet foods for men are lower calorie, broth or tomato based soups. Soup is the exception to liquids being less filling than solids. This should be taken advantage of and used as a diet food before meals to reduce hunger and to feel full. A Purdue University study, conducted by Richard Mattes, fed 300 calorie servings of soup to participants, before they ate lunch. They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted for lunch, but participants took in less calories daily on the days they ate the soup. Fat Burning Food for Men #2: Hot Peppers One fat burning food for men that will speed up your metabolism, is hot peppers. According to researchers at Laval University, in Canada, this is due to the chemical capsaicin. Capsaicin is found in jalapeno and cayenne peppers. This chemical provides temporary stimulus to your body, releasing stress hormones. This amps up your metabolism, causing calories to burn. Page 24
The Coto de Caza News
Fat Burning Food for Men #3: Beans Beans may not seem like a traditional diet food, but it works as one on many levels. Beans work as appetite suppressants, by helping you feel full longer. Beans also pack a big dose of fiber and protein, for very little calories, making it a great fat burning food. A half cup of pinto beans contains 8 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein and just 110 calories. So next time someone gives you grief over bean consumption, say you are just following your diet. Fat Burning Food for Men #4: Cereal High fiber, whole-grain cereal is a great fat burning food option, for breakfast or a snack. Another Purdue University study found that replacing a meal with a portion controlled serving of cereal may help weight loss. The study included 2/3 cup of skim milk and a 100 calorie serving of fruit with the cereal serving. Other research shows that men who increased their consumption of whole grain, were less likely to gain weight over time. Whole-grain cereals also provide fiber, nutrition and a sense of fullness, making it a decent diet food choice. Fat Burning Food for Men #5: Lean Turkey Lean turkey has long been a favorite fat burning food for body builders. The protein in this diet food can raise your metabolism, which helps to build up lean muscle. This in turn, helps your body to burn fat. A three ounce portion of boneless, skinless lean turkey contains 120 calories and 26 grams
of protein. These fat burning foods for men are not miracle diet foods. However, they can give your metabolism the boost it needs, to help you burn off excess calories. When used in conjunction with a doctor approved diet and exercise program, you should be able to achieve a healthy fitness level.

The new and improved Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that all Americans, including pregnant women, eat at least two servings (eight ounces) of seafood every week. The Guidelines are updated every four years by The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Department for Health and Human Services (HHS). Wondering how you’ll manage fitting seafood into your diet twice a week? Look no further than the nutrient filled, protein packed, super shellfish – shrimp. “To incorporate more seafood into your diet, use familiar recipes and swap out the same old protein for seafood like shrimp,” said Jennifer McGuire, MS, RD, National Fisheries Institute. “For example, shrimp is the perfect addition in pasta dishes, salads and sandwiches. And, to make your family’s diet seafood-rich, think beyond lunch and dinner. Add shrimp to an omelet for breakfast or to a panini for an afternoon snack for the kids.” Sure to benefit your heart and health, one three-ounce serving of shrimp contains just 100 calories and less than two grams of fat, while also delivering healthy omega-3s and a whopping 20 grams of protein. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 14-53147-COMM. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The Coto de Caza News
A European Count with a passion for architecture built this home in 1983. This Legacy Estate provides ambiance of an authentic Spanish Hacienda in the middle of the prestigious Los Ranchos Estates area of Coto De Caza. The historic property was later owned by a celebrity in the music business. It quickly became a popular weekend resort for legendary musicians. Several years ago prominent local ranchers who appreciated the Count’s vision restored the property to its former glory while maintaining historical aspects. They spared no expense for modern amenities and extensive upgrades. Some of the amenities include an outdoor covered Casita with a fully equipped bar, a night lighted Tennis Court, remodeled Pool and Spa and upgraded landscaping. There is also a 1200 square foot one bedroom guest quarters with a new kitchen and two new bathrooms. The most recent improvement to the property is an Equestrian area consisting of two horse corrals with shelter, tack room and two fenced turnout arenas. This is truly a one of a kind Legacy Estate in historic Coto De Caza. Price: $6,500,000
