PICKLEBALL PILOT PROGRAM UPDATE PICKLEBALL PRIORITY DAYS SHIFT TO ACCOMMODATE USAGE AND NOISE CONCERNS

San Luis Rey Park pickleball priority days move to Tuesday and Thursday; and San Gorgonio Park pickleball priority days move to Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. In September 2018, the City of San Clemente began a yearlong pickleball pilot program that added pickleball lines to one tennis court at
priority use at San Gorgonio Park on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday; and at San Luis Rey Park on Tuesday and Thursday. This change adds an additional priority day to the pilot program at San Gorgonio Park and also relieves concerns about weekend play at San Luis Rey Park. Not sure how to play pickleball or

SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE CLASS SUCCEEDS IN BAKERSFIELD
San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise Business Plan Team Virtual Enterprise at San Juan Hills High School is a collaborative learning environment that offers students hands-on, real-world experience in business. In this class, students work together to create and run a mock business as a class. They all have different roles in the company and work in different departments, just like in a real business. Students also compete in trade shows against other Virtual Enterprise students and can be awarded in categories like salesmanship, booth set-up, business/marketing plans, and human resources. This year’s students at San Juan Hills High School created “inVEst,” essentially a stock market or trading platform for Virtual Enterprise companies. Last week, the San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise class competed in the California State Trade Show in Bakersfield against a total of 80 schools and brought home three awards! The Business Plan Team of juniors Emily Wale, Jaden Bryan, and James Wale, along with senior Cole Lowey, earned 7th place in the state of California, Page 6
qualifying them for a possible spot to compete in the National Business Plan Competition being held in New York in April. In order to qualify for this competition, Business Plan Competition students have to formulate a detailed written Business Plan and present it to judges within an 8-10 minute time frame, followed by 10 minutes of questions from the judges. Students then compete in four rounds of competition, with the field narrowed down each time. Human Resources associates Isabella Poppen (freshman) and San Juan Hills High School Virtual Enterprise Human Resources Amanda Fohrman (senior) earned Associates Gold for placing in the top 5 out of 80 competing firms. Sales associates Diego Harrison (sophomore) and Bradley Armstrong (sophomore) were awarded Silver for placing in the top 10 out of 80 competing firms. As the Virtual Enterprise class continues to grow at San Juan Hills High School, the school is increasingly proud of these students for their hard work in setting up their business this year and competing at such a high level at the state competition! FESTIVAL OF ARTS NOW ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
The Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach is proud to announce that the scholarship applications for high school seniors who reside in Laguna Beach or attend a Laguna Beach High School are now open for applicant submissions online. Applicants may apply for any or all four categories. The four-year, highly competitive scholarships are awarded to students who excel in Film, Performing Arts (dance, music and theatre arts- including performance and production), Visual Arts and Writing. Recipients will only be awarded one scholarship. Since 1957, the Festival of Arts scholarship program has supported rising young artists by making it possible for students to pursue college studies in the arts. “Students with talents in multiple fields are encouraged to submit an application in more than one category,” said Festival of Arts Board Secretary and Scholarship Chair Pat Kollenda. She continued, “This is an excellent opportunity for students who are considering a career in the arts.” Scholarship applications are now available online at the Festival’s website foapom.com/scholarships. An applicant must be a graduating
high school senior who resides in Laguna Beach or attends Laguna Beach High School. Application deadline is March 8, 2019. Auditions and interviews will be scheduled in March and April 2018. Scholarship awards begin at a minimum of $1,000 and can be renewed for a total of four one-year scholarships. Students must reapply each summer for a continuation of scholarship status. Last year, the Festival of Arts awarded nearly $30,000 to graduating seniors for the 2019 - 2020 academic year. Many scholarship winners pursue successful careers in the arts, and some even return to the Festival as exhibiting artists. In addition to Scholarship Committee Chair Pat Kollenda, committee members include Wayne Baglin, Marge Earl, Kathy Jones and Jacquie Moffett. CHILDHELPS’ “NASHVILLE NIGHTS” RAISES OVER $460,000 FOR CHILDREN Anyone wanting to spend a fun-filled evening in Nashville found just that at Childhelp’s Fall Gala, at the Resort at Pelican Hill. “Nashville Nights” CoChairs, Susan Hill, Kristen James and Pam Pharris organized the Orange County Chapter’s 5th annual gala where guests enjoyed live music by The Arnie Newman Band, whiskey tasting sponsored by The Macallan, gambling, dining and dancing. Live and Silent Auctions and the Grand Prize Raffle provided opportunities for everyone to contribute toward stopping child abuse and neglect. Contribute, they did - the event raised over $460,000! Guests dressed in their best Western wear, had a fabulous pre-party drinks and appetizers, and a scrumptious dinner of Sweet Corn, Jicama, Asian Pear and Cucumber with Avocado Puree salad, a duet entree of Braised Asian-Style Beef Short Ribs and Ginger Blazed Sea Bass along with Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, Haricots Verts, with Carrots in a Cabernet Sauce. Then desserts were a Snickers Chocolate Cream Bar and a Blackberry Chocolate Tart. After dinner, the evening’s program began with Chapter President, Julie Adams, welcoming everyone. She then called on the Men’s Committee Chairs, Mark Adams and Bud Pharris to present the “Benevolent Heart Award.” This year’s awardees were the chapter’s youth auxiliary, WINGS. This group of approximately 60 7th to 12th grade students holds fundraising events, organize annual carnivals at the Merv Griffin Childhelp Village in Beaumont, and they created a WINGS Clubs at their schools throughout Orange County, all to support the lifesaving programs and services provided by Childhelp. The kids say that they’re just “kids helping kids,” but in just 3 short years they have proven just what a truly amazing group of students they are. As dessert was served, the energetic Live Auction began with auctioneer Zack Krone, enticing robust bidding as guests competed to win one of the nine items offered. First up was the diamond-encrusted guitar necklace, a perfect homage to the Nashville scene! Additional Live Auction items included the Ultimate Macallan Party for 10, Pelican Hill Getaway, Catalina Island Adventure, Private Dinner for 12 prepared by Chef Yianni, Luxury Big Bear Getaway, VIP NASCAR and IVI Vision Experience, and an Exceptional Liquor Cabinet. Last minute add-on items included a private jet to Las Vegas plus a very VIP package. The highlight of the Live Auction was the heated bidding for the opportunity to attend Childhelp’s Diamond Jubilee “Drive the Dream” Gala. This event will celebrate 60 years of Childhelp and includes exclusive invitations with Childhelp Founders, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson. At the conclusion of the Live Auction, guests moved on to Line Dancing, led by Kristal Lynn, and gaming. To close the gala, celebrity ambassadors Maksim and Peta drew the ticket for the Grand Prize and presented it to winner, Sepi Tabai. PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY ANNOUNCES CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is pleased to present its Chinese New Year Celebration on Monday, February 18, 2019, 8pm, at Segerstrom Hall, Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Bringing a rare opportunity to experience the quintessence of Chinese culture, the Chinese New Year Celebration features a performance by the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra, as well as the internationally renowned China National Beijing Opera Company, Troupe One, with special appearances by Peking Opera superstars Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu. This performance is part of the Philharmonic Society’s Eclectic Orange Series, sponsored by Judith and Howard Jelinek. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, December 17. The first half of the program features the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra performing works that transport listeners to ancient China. In 1978, a set of 2,500-yearold bronze and stone chime bells were excavated from the tomb of a Chinese ruler from the Bronze Age in Hubei, China. Believed to be the earliest twelve-tone equal temperament instruments in the world, these chime bells create an authentic, melodious timbre and also are breathtaking to behold due to their grand scale and elaborate cast technique. Additionally, other traditional instruments are featured on the program, including the qing, a stone or jade chime; the xun, a vessel flute; and the se, a plucked zither. The second half of the concert features Troupe One of the China National Beijing Opera Company Page 16
presenting three scenes from the Peking opera repertoire that include instrumental music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. Dressed in traditional costumes with full makeup, celebrated performers Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu are featured on a program that includes scenes from three classic Peking operas: Divergence, Palace of Eternal Life, as well as Uproar in Heaven, a classic Chinese story that follows the adventures of the mischievous Monkey King who wreaks havoc in his rebellion against the Jade Emperor. The Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra is a part of the Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, which is a leading performing arts organization that produces and performs traditional and folk opera, dance and music of the Hubei province. Committed to innovation in the arts, the theatre has won numerous awards including the first prize of the Excellent Performance Award of the first China Opera Festival, a Wenhua Award and Hubei Five-One Project Award. Through their international tours, the Hubei Chime Bells National Chinese Orchestra commits itself to cultural exchange and establishing connections between Chinese people and people from all over the world through visual and auditory performances.
