Santa Margarita Girls’ Soccer team Hosts Holiday Soccer Fest By Sean Zeitler Photos by Bob Russell The 7th Annual TOPSoccer Holiday Fest at Santa Margarita Catholic High School on December 13th was another huge success. From 8:00 o’clock in the morning until after 4:00 in the afternoon, the Santa Margarita Catholic High School girls’ soccer team, coaching staff and a number of parents worked diligently making sure every last detail was taken care of for this very special event. TOPSoccer (The US Youth Soccer Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training program for young athletes ages 5 and up with special needs. The goal is to enable young athletes with disabilities to develop their physical fitness, technical skills, courage and self-esteem, through the joy and excitement of playing soccer. As the children arrived at 11:30, they were given their participant’s t-shirt, assigned to a team and lead around to nine different stations where activities included fresh blown
snow, soccer tennis, face painting, a balloon artist, Santa & Mrs. Claus, trampolines, and plenty of shooting on goals. With holiday music the playing during the entire event, the Eagle Mascot put plenty of smiles on little faces as it roamed around greeting the players. As the day wrapped up, everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch, and lots of treats that were all donated by the Santa Margarita Catholic High School soccer families, and a fun group dance. Last on the agenda was an award ceremony where every participant received a medal from the SMCHS coaching staff, courtesy of TOPSoccer, and a parting goody bag. This is the sixth year that Santa Margarita Catholic High School has played host to this program. Established in 1987, Santa Margarita Catholic High School is a nationally-recognized awardwinning co-educational, college preparatory, diocesan high school with approximately 1,700 students and more than 7,000 alumni.

Four simple tips to achieve your New Year’s resolutions The new year is here and it’s time to tackle your resolutions! You’ve set your goal, and now is the time to take action. A recent survey by Bing and Impulse Research showed 69 percent of people were all talk last year and did not keep their New Year’s resolution. The same survey showed 41 percent of people want to improve their health and lose weight in 2015. Following a few simple tips can help you kick start your healthy habits and inspire you to achieve your goals this year. * Be specific. Rather than creating a general goal to lose weight, workout more, or eat healthier, set a goal that is measureable and realistic. If your goal is to lose weight, decide how many pounds you want to lose, and set a target date for the weight loss. If you want to work out more this year, think about how many times per week you want to hit the gym. This is an important step in setting a goal because it will keep you motivated, and allow you to assess your progress. * Make a strategy. Take the time to think through what it will take to achieve your resolution and create benchmark goals throughout the

year. Doing so will help you track your progress and create opportunities to reward yourself along the way. People often spend too much time critiquing themselves or focus on how far away they are from their end goal and forget to celebrate the smaller wins. Make a plan to reach your goal and reward yourself as you reach your milestones. * Learn your barriers and find solutions. In our time-starved world it’s not surprising that 20 percent of people say they don’t have enough time to accomplish their New Year’s resolution. Don’t let your busy schedule hold you back from accomplishing your goal; instead, focus on doing a little bit every day. If you’re on the go, choose a healthy snack like carrot sticks or walnuts to prevent you from reaching for sugary treats. The Bing Health & Fitness app for Windows 8.1 has nutritional information for more than 200,000 foods so you can compare your options and select the healthiest choice. If your busy day kept you from hitting the gym, don’t let that be an excuse not to work out. The app also has more than 1,000 exercise videos so you can work out anywhere. And
if you’re too busy to get in a whole workout, select an area that needs some attention and the app will suggest workouts that target that area. With this app, you can stay on track by finding a workout that fits your schedule. * Grab a partner. The buddy system is an effective way to achieve your goal. Find a friend or family member with the same goal so you can support each other and share tips along the
way. At the beginning of the year, schedule workout dates and active get-togethers. Share recipes or make plans to cook together so you have healthy, ready-to-eat meals. Having someone hold you accountable will help inspire you to keep up your hard work, not to mention it also makes achieving your goal fun. Follow these four tips and you’ll be on your way to achieving your health and fitness goals in 2015.

Make Breakfast Part of Your New Year’s Resolution It’s a new year, so why not make it a new you? Put those resolutions into action by making simple changes to help improve your lifestyle. Start with the meal that helps start your day and create a versatile, fulfilling breakfast by adding almonds, in all their forms to your morning meal to help provide you with the energy you need. Matthew Biancaniello, master mixologist at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Library Bar is known for his innovative cocktail creations and use of fresh ingredients. His creativity extends to healthful smoothies that help jump start your morning and your metabolism as well. For an easy smoothie, Biancaniello suggests using almond butter or almond milk for a creamy base with a burst of flavor. “One of my favorite smoothie recipes uses a combination of both almond butter and milk, along with fresh fruit, juices and seasonings for a unique blend that’s sure to get your day going,” says Biancaniello. “It takes no time at all to add and blend the ingredients, and the result is a satisfying drink that you can take with you on the go.” Including a handful of almonds in your breakfast is one simple solution that not only packs a powerful nutritional punch, but also helps keep you satisfied throughout the morning. There are all kinds of ways almonds can help boost your breakfast: Toss a handful of whole natural almonds and fresh berries into your morning yogurt. Look for cereals containing crunchy sliced or slivered almonds. Top whole wheat toast with almond butter and sliced bananas, or spread almond butter onto
apple slices. Use almond milk in your oatmeal, and top with dried or fresh fruit. Sprinkle sliced almonds into your breakfast parfait layered with low-fat yogurt and fruit. Toss toasted, sliced almonds into scrambled eggs or a veggie omelet for an extra healthy boost. The Southside of Morocco Smoothie Yield: 1 smoothie 3 strawberries 2 ounces pomegranate juice 5 mint leaves 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice 3/4 ounce agave syrup (1-to-1 ratio with water) 1 slice fresh ginger 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1-2 tablespoons almond butter Add each ingredient to blender or food processor; mix until well blended. Serve in glass with or without ice; garnish with mint sprig. For a slushy texture, blend ingredients with ice or substitute with frozen strawberries. Smart Fitness & Exercise Tips to Help You Stick with Your New Year’s Resolution By Ellie Perico It is well known that some of the most common New Years resolutions are to eat healthier, lose weight, get in shape, etc. So, as my first blog in several weeks (due to a WAY too busy holiday season) I figured I would interview some of my closest friends and co-workers and ask them what the smartest diet and exercise tips they had to offer. These tips come from people that have fought the weight loss battle and won so take them and apply them to your daily life. They just may help you stick with that New Year’s resolution after all... or at least stick with it longer than you expected! Since I got so many responses, there will be a part 2 & a part 3 to this post! 1. Save money and buy in bulk BUT separate out portion sizes into small, snack size sandwich bags. This not only saves money, it is also helping you eat healthier by minimizing how much you eat. If you eat out of the large containers, you will liable to eat much more than just one or even two servings. The snacks that often come in those 100 calorie packs also tend to be not so healthy choices. Instead of eating 100 calories of mini Oreos, Page 4
crackers, etc, separate out bags of almonds, dried fruit, whole wheat crackers, etc. 2. If you are not feeling like working out, try and remind yourself of the feeling you get when you are done. More often than not, you feel 100 times better and more refreshed than if you had opted to forgo your workout. 3. Retrain your appetite. Instead of eating when you are bored and when you are not really hungry, wait about 10 minutes before you decide to dive into a meal. It is common for people to eat just because it is lunch time or eat out of boredom. Go for a walk, make phone calls, answer emails and, if you are still hungry, then eat. 4. Try to plan your meals at least a day or two in advance, if not a week in advance. It sounds difficult but it’s really not. Make several chicken breasts on Sunday night and separate them out. Then make some whole grain rice and maybe grill some veggies. Many foods will keep in your refrigerator for at least a week and you can eat these foods as a lunch or dinner. Make a chicken sandwich on Monday, Chicken Parmesan for dinner Tuesday, fajitas on Wednesday, etc.
The Coto de Caza News
It’ll help you avoid poor food choices when you don’t have anything ready to eat at hand. 5. If you are on a diet, focused on your New Years resolution or recently started a strict exercise regimen and you slip, do not give up!! Move on and work twice as hard the next day to make up for it. We all slip sometimes.. 6. If you joined a gym, signed up for classes or got yourself a personal trainer recently, try and pay for the memberships or fees up front and in advance. Knowing that you have already forked over all of that cash will give you the incentive to keep going and not miss. 7. Put a mirror on your fridge! When you are about to reach in there for some impulsive eating (boy am I all too familiar with that!), look yourself in the eye and make sure you are really hungry and really want to do that. Believe it or not, it is helpful and helps you confront what’s really driving you to food. 8. Say no to the little things. Avoid eating out of the candy jar at work, grabbing an extra serving at lunch, eating that sample at the grocery store, etc. Little bites like these can add anywhere from 75 - 150 extra
calories a day to your diet. In about a month, that adds up to just over a pound gained (or lost if you avoid them!) 9. Bet on it. A lot of people at work and at places of employment of friends of mine have started a Biggest Loser contest in the new year. They put $50 each into a pot on the first day. Then they diet and exercise for the next 30 - 90 days. At the end, the winner gets all of the money. If even just 10 people join, that’s $500 you win! 10. Eat slow. Eating slow can help you feel full much faster, helping you eat less at each meal. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the point where your body will tell you your full so give yourself time to get there before it is too late and you stuff yourself silly!

How to stick to your New Year ’s resolutions all year long With the holidays past and a new year upon us, now is the time for Americans to focus on their 2015 resolutions. And while fitness goals often top the list of New Year’s resolutions, diet and exercise aren’t the only ways to get back into shape. This year, do yourself and your loved ones a favor by getting financially fit as well. Although most Americans intend to become financially savvy in the new year, only a small fraction fully commit to their financial success. According to a 2012 study from University of Scranton, 34 percent of Americans established financial resolutions goals, but only 8 percent were successful in achieving them. Luckily, 2015 is a new year, which means new opportunity to focus on and work toward your financial aspirations. To help stay financially fit in 2015 and beyond, here are a few tips: * Be specific with your resolutions: Once you know exactly what you’re saving for, arm yourself with the right savings tools to achieve your goals. Savings Goals enables you to name your goals and track them throughout the year. * Save regularly by setting up automatic transfers: Start the new year off with an aim to save. One of the easiest ways to save is to have funds automatically moved to your account every month or with every paycheck. With an automatic savings plan, you can set it and forget it. * Maximize retirement savings:
If you have a 401(k), max out your contributions (and your employer match, if you have one) to gain full benefits for the tax year. Also, while you’re permitted to make IRA contributions through the tax filing deadline, contributing now may provide additional tax-deferred growth potential. * Give your portfolio a tune-up: Take a look at the investments you have and make sure you’re maintaining a well-balanced, diversified portfolio that aligns with your risk tolerance and goals. If you’re just getting started, an online investing tool can help you assess your investing style and risk profile, and set up a personalized portfolio and investing plan that works for you. * Create an emergency fund: To minimize debt and financial penalties resulting from having to pay off unexpected expenses, create an emergency fund. Allocate some of
this year’s holiday budget, yearend bonus and/or tax return to an interest-earning, FDIC-insured savings account. You can also set up automatic contributions to build your savings. A good rule of thumb is to maintain six months’ worth of expenses in your savings, just in case. * Look for responsible ways to establish credit:-Remember that a credit card doesn’t equal free money. Start with a low-limit credit card that offers points and/or rewards and pay your monthly balance in full and on time. Late fees add up quickly and hurt your credit score.- And, set up alerts to help you track your spending and to help you pay your bill on time. The winter season can be a stressful time financially, but if you plan ahead and stick to your financial goals, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy financial success in the new year and for years to come.

Five savings resolutions for the new year Is saving on your New Year’s resolution list this year? The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Ready. Save.Grow. campaign offers five saving strategies that will have you moving toward your long-term savings goals and toasting along the way. “A new calendar year invigorates people to start with a clean slate, so it’s a great time to begin building or refreshing your savings goals,” says Jerry Kelly, national director of the Treasury Department’s Ready.Save. Grow. campaign. “Since saving for the future can be challenging, we’ve developed a resolution check list to help people celebrate small savings victories one at a time.” Resolve to accomplish these five savings goals in 2015:
*Grow your tax refund - Rather than spend your refund, put the lump sum to work this tax season. Use IRS Form 8888 to direct all or a portion of your tax refund into your TreasuryDirect account. If you don’t have an account, you can open one at www.treasurydirect.gov. Tax season is also the only time taxpayers are able to buy paper Series I Savings Bonds, in amounts ranging from $50 to $5,000, using tax refund dollars. * Plan for the future with digital savings bonds - Savings bonds are an affordable, safe and convenient way for people to accumulate money for the future. A savings bond can be bought for just $25 and can earn interest for up to 30 years. Savings bonds may be used to achieve long-term goals such as retirement, college or a new home. If you need your money sooner, a savings bond can be cashed any time after 12 months. * Set up payroll direct deposit - You don’t need a lot of money to start saving and there are simple
SAME DAY SERVICE
ways to accumulate funds. By using direct deposit to contribute to a TreasuryDirect account every payday, you’ll build your savings over time. The amount you set is automatically deposited into your account, so you won’t be tempted to spend it. * Diversify with marketable securities - The Treasury Department offers an array of marketable securities with terms ranging from 4 weeks to 30 years. These securities can be bought for as little as $100 and held in TreasuryDirect until their term ends. Along the way you earn interest. For shorter term (one year or less) marketable securities, interest is paid at the end of the term. For longer term (more than one year) securities, interest is paid every six months. If you need your money before a security reaches its term, you can transfer it to a broker to sell. Marketable securities offer long-term savers the opportunity to diversify their savings and take control of their future. * Start your child on the path to savings - The earlier the better when it comes to saving. The Treasury Department has resources to help families start saving for their children’s
future. Parents can set up a special account for their children within their own TreasuryDirect account so that savings bonds can be bought as gifts for their children. Bonds are held in this account until the child turns 18. In addition, the Treasury Department has a child-friendly website, TreasuryDirect KIDS (www. treasurydirect.gov/kids/kids.htm), with games, quizzes and videos that teach students from fifth to seventh grade in a fun and engaging way about the history and role of debt in America, and the basics of how Treasury securities work. Ready.Save.Grow. helps people take control of their future by providing information and resources about the safe, affordable and convenient savings options offered by the Treasury Department. Visit the website (www.treasurydirect. gov/readysavegrow), to learn more. You can also find Ready.Save. Grow. on Facebook and Twitter@ ReadySaveGrow. The preceding information was provided by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service.

CASA fashion show Raises $200,000 Friends of CASA, a fundraising auxiliary of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), hosted its 2014 Holiday Luncheon, at The St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point; the event netted more than $200,000 that will go directly to supporting CASA’s mission. Top Tier Diamond Starfish Sponsors of this event included Microsemi, Lugano Diamonds, and Don and Soogie Kang. The elegant event was held during the day, in the middle of the week AND during the Holiday Season – they had an amazing attendance of 520 women and men, which is quite impressive for this time of year! Guests were able to enjoy an exquisite lunch and champagne reception with a fashion show presented by MaxMara as well as a premium silent auction. One lucky winner of the opportunity drawing, sponsored by Lugano Diamonds, went home with a beautiful Pearl Necklace with Diamond Clasp that contained 13mm Tahitian, White South Sea and Golden pearls as well as round brilliant diamonds valued at $18,000. CASA Board Member Patty Juarez, who serves as the Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Wells Fargo Regional Commercial Banking Office, and current Chairwoman of the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Luncheon and was assisted by a team of nearly 60 women. The day’s festivities also included trees adorned with “starfish ornaments” that detailed the wishes of foster youth that were available to fund for the holidays. Guests listened attentively when keynote speaker Debbi Swerdlow, a CASA for the past three years, spoke of her personal journey with her physically disabled foster youth. Consistent with CASA’s call to action, “I am for the Child,” Swerdlow, expressed her continued fulfillment in supporting and advocating for the youths in the foster care system, and how doing so brings a profound meaning and perspective to her life. The lights went low and the fashion show began. The runway show took us on a journey through a few of the worlds of MaxMara with a preview of MaxMara’s new Resort 2015 Collection. The S’ Collection is designed for easy living along with its innovative CUBE Siberian Goose down Coats. The Sportmax Collection of Resort Fall styles are straight off the streets of Milan and finally the “must have” Max Marra Winter Coat collection quenched everyone’s Holiday desires. Lunch was served and along with the lovely champagne and Chardonnay wine, guests started with a Butter Leaf Lettuce, Charred Roasted Tomato, Crumbled Feta, salad served with a Oregano-Basil Dressing. The entrée gave us Grilled Herb Crusted Chicken Breast with Organic Faro, Capers and Tomatoes, Herb-Lemon Beurre Blanc sauce. Dessert was even more divine with an Exotic Dome of White Chocolate Mousse, with Chocolate Dacquoise, and Caramel Rum Sauce along with a Pineapple Compote, simply decedent! Friends of CASA are committed to raising funds for CASA of Orange County’s mentor-advocate program for abused and neglected children in the foster care system. Through the annual Holiday Luncheon, the Friends of CASA raise awareness of the CASA program, recruiting volunteers and long-term donors to CASA. Over the years, this dedicated group of women has been responsible for raising well over 1.5 million dollars that has gone directly to addressing the needs of some of our community’s most vulnerable children. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County is a privatelyfunded non-profit organization that serves severely abused, neglected and abandoned children through the recruitment, training and continued support of volunteers who advocate and mentor these children, representing their best interest in the courtroom and other settings. Founded in 1985, with major support from the Junior League of Orange County, they serve annually approximately 1,000 of the children who move through the court system as a direct cause of abuse and neglect. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS! The Coto de Caza News is happy to announce the birth of your newborn:
Baby’s Name: Date of Birth: Weight:
A patient of long-standing came in s e v e r a l weeks ago, complaining that her teeth were sensitive, generally, all over mouth. When I visually Dr. Michael Tessier inspected her mouth, there was no evidence of cracked teeth, or tired-old fillings, or bad crowns, or gum recession- all the usual suspects. There was nothing that I could see that might contribute to tooth sensitivity. We treated the sensitive teeth on the right wide with the laser. When she came back two weeks later, she said that she couldn’t wait to have me do the left side, because all the sensitivity was gone on the right side. Positively amazing. So, when you eat ice cream, or drink a margarita, one of your molars, or maybe even a bicuspid, is sensitive. When you take that problem tooth to your friendly, neighborhood dentist, and he says you need that tooth capped (or crowned). What’s that about? When someone drills on a crystalline structure, like glass, or porcelain, or tooth enamel, the heat of friction from the drilling device puts microscopic fractures in the material. When a dentist has to put a big filling in a tooth, those little fractures pre-dispose that tooth to further fracture. The fractures

virtually split the tooth. Later, after years of chewing trauma, the nerve becomes irritated from this microscopic splitting during chewing or clenching. This hypersensitivity is usually manifested as temperature sensitivity. Just replacing the filling doesn’t help because the cracks are already there. A crown, on the other hand, holds the tooth together, like the band on a barrel, so the splitting activity stops. If the trauma to the nerve of the tooth didn’t damage that nerve irreparably, which would necessitate a root canal (removing the damaged nerve from the root of the tooth), a crown is all that’s necessary to allow you to return to the pleasures of ice cream-eating. There are also instances where a tooth is sensitive to cold or even sweets, and a fracture is not the culprit. This is most often a result of root sensitivity, where the root of the tooth is exposed due to gum recession. There is also a setting on my soft-tissue laser (Periolase) for treating teeth that are cold sensitive due to root sensitivity. Dr. Tessier says “If this article brings forward a question, please call me and we can chat. Consultation appointments are always complimentary. Please don’t hesitate to call my office if you have any questions about this process, or any other of the modern technologies we can use to make your smile whiter and your day better.” Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. Expert fitness and lifestyle skincare tips for a healthy and beautiful 2015 The new year is an ideal time to set goals surrounding personal health, fitness and wellness. As many goal-setters know, setting realistic resolutions that one can keep is a challenge, but taking a holistic approach to health - which includes everything from skincare and diet to working out and maintaining a balanced lifestyle - ensures that resolutions turn into results. Trainer-to-the-stars, Kacy Duke, is one of the noted lifestyle and wellness experts on the Simple Advisory Board. Simple Skincare, a range of facial skincare products sensitive to skin needs, has the board to help women everywhere discover the benefits of a holistic approach to skincare. Duke and other boardmembers offer advice to help women care for their skin from the inside out. In many cases, what is left out is as important as what is put in when it comes to skincare products. All Simple products have no dyes, artificial perfumes or harsh chemicals that can upset skin. Duke touts the importance of living a holistic lifestyle and revving up one’s workout routine to promote healthly skin. She shares her tips on easy ways to incorporate fitness - 365 days a year: Consider (quick) cardio Even on the busiest of days, find 15 minutes to squeeze in a quick cardio session.-Heart-pumping cardio will not only burn calories, but can also boost energy and improve moods. Aim for high-intensity interval workouts that alternate periods of short, intense activity with quick recovery periods. Burpees are a great full body, high intensity exercise that
can be done in any time crunch. Think “outside the gym” Whether it’s a power walk in the park, sledding with the kids or other non-gym activities, a good amount of everyday movement promotes better blood flow and circulation. An active lifestyle also helps flush out cellular debris, which helps skin achieve a natural, healthy glow. Pack accordingly Keeping a packed workout bag at home or at the office increases the likelihood of a trip to the gym. In addition to a change of clothes, athletic shoes and a water bottle, be sure to include Simple Oil Balancing Facial Wipes to cleanse and refresh skin post-workout. These convenient wipes, which also help control shine, work in just one step - so there is no rinsing required. Be balanced Simple encourages women to adopt a holistic approach to skincare and to look beyond their typical skincare routine. One can do this by pairing exercise with smart lifestyle choices, including a healthy diet and stress management techniques. This trio of activities not only impacts fitness goals, but also the look and feel of skin. For an energy boost, almonds are a great snack as they are rich in skin-loving vitamin E. To de-stress, try to sneak in five minutes of meditation a day. Many people find that a holistic and balanced approach to fitness is easier to sustain - ultimately ensuring that results and healthy habits are maintained throughout the year. For more tips on how to stay fit and maintain beautiful skin into the new year, as well as additional advice from Kacy Duke and other Simple Advisory Board members, visit- www. simpleskincare.com.

Winning ideas for beating winter blues Nearly 150 days separate the last day of the winter holidays from the first unofficial day of summer - Memorial Day. After holiday decorations get packed away, and winter sets in, it’s not uncommon to experience a touch - or more - of winter boredom. Some people may find themselves in a rut during those long 150 days. Fortunately, a number of tactics can help perk up your spirits. Here is a handful to consider as you enter 2015: Escape the routine Traveling during winter has many benefits. In many areas of the country, winter months are slower business times for hotels and resorts, and you may find great deals. What’s more, breaking up the routine and going somewhere new and exciting - or relaxing - may help alleviate winter blues. Immersing yourself in relaxation and pampering could be just what you need to release winter tensions. Places like The American Club resort in the quaint Village of Kohler, Wis., offers luxurious accommodations and the opportunity to step outside the winter routine. The newly renovated Carriage House sits above the fivestar Kohler Waters Spa. Owned by
Kohler Co., the leading manufacturer of bathing products, it’s no surprise the spa is renowned for its cuttingedge bathing and hydrotherapy services. Such destinations offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in luxury and do absolutely nothing, or get your blood pumping with all the exciting attractions, activities and culinary experiences at the resort and surrounding area. Refresh your environment Travel isn’t always possible, but you can still experience a change in perspective when you make changes in your home environment. Kitchen and bathroom renovations are top choices and winter is a great time to tackle those projects. If you have the budget, by all means - go big. But if your budget is more modest, don’t despair; even small changes like new shower heads, faucets and accessories can give a room a spirit-lifting new look and feel. Doubt the power of a shower head to transform a bath? Consider the KOHLER Moxie Showerhead + Wireless Speaker. Its wireless speaker pairs with devices enabled with Bluetooth technology, offering a delightful and energizing showering
experience. Available in four new colors (Chartreuse, Retro Blue, Navy Blue or Cherry Red), this showerhead will not only provide new decor but also an upgraded showering experience. Make your own holidays Who says you have to limit spiritlifting celebrations to specific days of the year? If gathering with family and friends around the dinner table makes you happy, why not choose one day a month and have everyone over? Decorate for a theme that you enjoy - such as the beach or even the Fourth of July in January. Celebrate each family member with a special outing. Perhaps in January, your firstgrader will choose a trip to the local indoor playground. In February, your husband might opt for a family bowling night. Allowing each
member of the family to choose a destination gets everyone involved and excited. Plus, unusual family outings are a great way to brighten winter days. The days between New Year’s and spring don’t have to drag. Just step outside the routine - whether through travel or innovation at home - to help beat the winter blues.

New year, new you, new boat: Insider tips for shopping a local boat show A new year means new resolutions. Maybe your resolution is looking to spend more quality time with family and friends? Learn something new? Spend more time outdoors or being active? This is the year to follow through on that resolution and discover boating - an activity that can accomplish all of the above. Boating counts more than 88 million Americans getting on board each year and not only creates priceless memories with loved ones, it helps kids and adults disconnect from technology and reconnect on the water. In fact, more than half of Americans say getting out on a boat is one of the best ways to bond with family, according to a 2012 survey by Discover Boating and Kelton Research. If boating is on your radar, getting started can be easy. Ring in 2015 by shopping a local boat show to learn more about what, when, where and how to fish, sail, wakeboard, ride personal watercraft, cruise and more. Throughout the winter and spring, hundreds of boat shows are held around the country and they provide a taste of the boating lifestyle, deals
on boats for every budget, and an opportunity to compare boat brands side-by-side. Boat shows are a buying environment with hundreds of newyear models at special show pricing. It’s simple to find a show nearby with the Boat Show Finder, which locates shows within a 200-mile radius. Once you locate the nearest boat show, use these insider tips to get the most out of your experience. * Find your virtual dreamboat. Before visiting a boat show, you’ll want to know which boats to shop. Start your search online with DiscoverBoating. com’s Boat Selector to identify which boat types fit your lifestyle, interests and budget. Plug in your preferences for on-water activities, number of passengers, boat length, price range, and propulsion to narrow down boat options before leaving home. * Make the most of show pricing. It helps to know what fits in your budget before shopping a show. Use this boat loan calculator to estimate monthly payments, which can be as low as $250 a month or less. Since one of the best times to buy a boat is at a boat show, exhibitors generally
offer special show pricing and other incentives during the winter season. * Learn the ropes. Boat shows provide opportunities for beginners to learn about getting on the water, and experienced captains to hone their skills. Look for shows offering interactive workshops and seminars, including knot-tying, DIY boat maintenance, and docking. It’s not only fun to learn new skills, but smart to take advantage of the onsite training boat shows offer usually at little to no cost. * Bring the whole family. More than a shopper’s paradise, there’s fun to be had by everyone. Boat shows often offer free activities to keep the kids entertained, including fishing, paddlesports, sailing simulators and more. Plus, it helps to make boat buying a family decision, keeping in mind which activities will appeal most to the kids and the adults. -* Look for the seal of approval. When shopping for a boat at a show, online or at a dealership, always check to make sure it is certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. An “NMMA Certified” seal means a boat has met strict
industry standards for safety and construction and federal regulations, ensuring the best quality to the buyer. Look for the NMMA certified sticker near the helm and find a full list of certified boat manufacturers at DiscoverBoating.com. This year, keep that new year resolution to get on the water and have some fun. Whether in the market for a boat or just curious about the boating lifestyle, the first step toward keeping that resolution is to visit a local boat show this winter.
Don’t let messes leave you in a ‘holidaze’: Easy tips for post-holiday clean up The holidays bring plenty of cheer and the arrival of family from all over. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all. But with family visits and hearty meals also comes a big share of messes. After hefty helpings of gravy and chocolates, there will be plenty of cleaning required to get your home back in tip top shape for the new year. It’s enough to leave anyone “holidazed,” but with the right tools and tricks on your side, it does not have to. Here are some tips to help get your home clean again after those pesky holiday messes so all you have to worry about is enjoying the season: Create smaller tasks: Create a master list to help you break down cleaning into manageable chunks. Instead of tackling a full mess in one room, only to start again in the next one, complete the same task in each room. For example, dust every room before hitting them all with the vacuum. With this approach, you’ll see a cleaner home in no time without making too many trips back and forth from the broom closet. Donate unused items: With the Page 22
holidays come gifts and housewarming presents. If you are on the receiving end of unwanted or simply unneeded gifts, why not donate them to someone else? Many organizations accept donations, including clothing and other belongings year-round. Consider donating that extra toiletries set, scarf or books to charity to clean up some clutter and help brighten someone else’s day. Put cleaning staples to work: You may think you need different cleaning products for different jobs, but just one classic cleaning product - Clorox Regular-Bleach - can tackle more messes than you think from laundry to helping sanitize and disinfect countertops, dishes and everything in between. For example, you can even use bleach to kill odor-causing bacteria left in your refrigerator after that big family meal and leave it smelling fresh and clean. Remove food from the fridge and wash the surfaces with a solution of 1/2 cup Clorox Regular-Bleach per gallon of soapy water. Let it stand for five minutes, rinse and then air dry for a few minutes before replacing the

food. For more uses, visit www. BleachItAway.com. Organize holiday decorations: Before putting away decorations, invest in better organization and storage materials. It may take a few more minutes to put away lights if they are wrapped around a spool, but consider how much faster it will be to hang them next year. By spending a few extra minutes this year, you will save yourself the stress in the future. In addition to these tips, remember
to embrace the funny moments that come along with the mess. No matter what you’re celebrating this holiday season, no one is immune to messes, and the holidays are rife with them from dinnertime spills to that family member who enjoyed a bit too much eggnog. Instead of letting the messes get you down, take a moment to step back and enjoy the happiness of family visits and the extra time together. But because the messes will happen, remember to laugh at them.

Just Say No to the New Year ’s Onslaught of Fad Diets and Lose Weight By JC Curtis What’s your holiday weight gain damage? Did you put on 5, 10, 15 pounds? You’ve probably already been plotting how you can lose those pounds as quickly as you’ve put them on. There’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Here’s why you should stay away from those new years fads, and how you can achieve real weight loss instead. - A feast for the weight loss industry. This is the time of year the weight loss industry waits for you! What are they hoping for? They’re hoping you’ve done a whole lot of eating from thanksgiving through new years. The more you gain, the more they know you’ll be looking to pay for a quick fix. They’re not looking for you to put on a lousy 5 pounds, but 10 pounds or more, they’re dancing in their glory. They’re the only ones hoping for a fatter country coming out of these holiday. They’ve been waiting to unveil their ad campaigns that have been prepared months ago, set up to prey on your weaknesses. Those companies invest big money into studying your habits, and the emotions behind weight issues. They aren’t designed to help you, they’re designed to get your money. They advertise promises, but they don’t offer the long-term solution people need. So, if you’ve gained weight, you’ll be making a big mistake by buying into those fads. What will happen, is you’ll keep struggling to lose those same pounds, because you’ll keep losing and gaining. - Quick fixes don’t work. If you get a promise of something that seems “to easy,” you better consider any consequences. You hear about get rich schemes all the time. They advertise a program, and “all you need to do is pay $49.99 and you’ll be rich tomorrow!” Most of us know that hard work and saving is how we can make it rich, but many of us still are quick to charge up their offer on our credit card. We all want to instantly succeed, but quick fixes often leave us standing in the same place, or worse. How many times have you paid for something useless, and nothings changed? When it comes to weight loss, quick fixes don’t work because they make us do things, like starve, cut out our favorite foods, do things like only drink liquids, etc., and we end up miserable. They slow down our metabolism, teach us unhealthy habits, and they confuse us, even going so far as causing eating disorders for some. If you want successful long-term weight loss, you need to make sensible changes, like starting an exercise program, eating
the right amount of calories, and boosting you metabolism by eating 5-6 small meals each day. Quick fixes assure you’ll be a yo-yo dieter, and that’s what you need to change to ever see success. - Get back to winning habits. If you’ve gained a few holiday pounds, it’ll be as easy as going back to your normal habits and getting a little bit of extra exercise to shed those pounds. Most people get all stressed out when they feel their pants a bit tighter, but don’t fret! If you’ve been at a pretty good weight before the holidays, you were doing something right to begin with, so get back to it. Do all the things you were, but perhaps add in a few extra walks throughout the week. Refrain from giving into trying any fads, because you’ll end up all mixed up about weight loss, and heading into something that’s unhealthy only over a few pounds. Don’t let fads ruin what was once a healthy weight for you. Begin today by remembering all the things that had you at a healthy weight. Start the day with breakfast, go for walks, plan your meals, eat enough, journal write, whatever helps you feel good and supports health is what a winning weight loss plan is about. - Change is what healthy weight loss takes. Have you been struggling to lose weight for a longtime? If you have, I bet you’re hoping this will be the year you lose it. Many people start out the new year wanting to change something about themselves or their lives, and what better time to start. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you especially need to stay away
from fads. If you don’t, the only thing you’ll have in the new year are disappointments. To achieve longlasting weight loss, you’ll need a long-term approach, and that means broader changes for success. You’ll need to make many changes to how you’ve been eating, to your exercise, to your environment, to your habits, and you’ll need to get educated about what long-term success is really about. Most of the population is failing at weight loss because they’re confused, and they get tricked into believing weight loss can come quickly. People believe it because it’s what they want to hear, and they buy into anything that preaches hope. How many advertisements do you see each day that boast “quick weight loss?” Plenty! There’s always got to be a reason behind it, and that’s to get your attention, and for you to empty your pockets. Research plans that are free and offer a sensible approach. The best weight loss plans are those that are free, and have your best interest at heart. Search online, you’re sure to find great websites. Also, look through magazines at your local bookstore for weight loss tips. - Slow and steady proves a winner. When we follow a plan that doesn’t deprive us and isn’t overly restrictive, we get the results we want. The secret to weight loss, is to follow a plan we can follow for the long-term. By taking it slow, we take the time to get used to the changes we’re making, and as we stick with each change, we’ll keep losing weight. Many people try to lose an unrealistic amount of weight each week, and
they wonder why they don’t get their intended results. If you make one change each week, you’ll be improving your health, as long as those changes are sensible. In the long run, your time and efforts will be rewarded, as long as you’re following steps that are proven winners. Try crazy schemes, and you’ll keep losing and gaining, and the struggle will continue. Changes you make, should be those things you can stick with over your lifetime. If you make a change that you can only “sacrifice” and do for a week, what do you think will happen? You’ll throw that change away in a heartbeat once the week is over. Most fads put you right back to where you started, or far worse off. If you’re patient, give change the time to become habit, keep building on those changes, you’ll have lasting results. We all wish it were as simple as a packaged box that says, “follow this, this, and this,” but it’s not. If we’re serious about losing weight, it takes a lifestyle change, not just a short-term new years resolution to do it. We need to take action and change from what we’ve been doing, because there are no miracles. We’re responsible for our health and our choices, and we should never reach for unhealthy measures in our quest for weight loss. This is a great time to try to loss weight, because what better way to start the new year out fresh, with new goals, and a willingness to get healthier. Stay away from fads, learn about sensible weight loss plans, and you’ll achieve long-term weight loss.

Fitness Facts the Experts Won’t Tell You By Carolyn Blevins You’re going to be sore somewhere. It’s just a fact of life and you know it. If you take a person who is essentially a physical lump and that lump suddenly starts a fitness routine, the lump gets sore, someplace. Even a well conditioned, athletic person will be sore when they incorporate a new activity into their usual fitness routine. Fitness in one sport or physical activity oftentimes doesn’t translate well, meaning that I can run five miles a day and still find myself wheezing my way through an aerobics routine, complete with burning muscles, strangled gasps for breath and thoughts like, “Whose stupid idea was this, anyway?” running through my head. And even with my five-miles-a-day capability, please don’t ask me to walk hills. My fanny will still be aching days later. I’d rather run a hill than walk it. Why? Because that’s the way my muscles are trained and because of that, running hills doesn’t make them sore and burning. Walking hills does. Muscles are creatures of habit. They get use to being used (or not used) in a certain way and it takes a bit of coaxing to get them to adjust to new circumstances. So what’s the answer to sore, achy muscles? Gentle stretching and another moderate workout. You need to coax the soreness out of the muscles while at the same time gently continue your new routine. The key word here is gently. Gentle stretching, gentle, varied workouts and rest periods. If I’m starting a walking routine, I might try for a half mile my first couple of days (based on my current fitness level and my dislike of walking) with gentle stretching before and after. If there’s going to be any sore and achy muscles involved, they’ll hit no later than Day Three. On that day, rather than taking the day off, I’ll do my gentle stretching and maybe walk a flat quarter mile, followed by more gentle stretching and then take Day Four off. The burning, aching muscles are caused by lactic acid buildup. Lactic acid is the waste product built up by working muscles. If you run your car, you burn gas. But you also create waste with the exhaust. Consider lactic acid as your muscles’ equivalent of exhaust. It needs to go away or we’ll poison our fitness efforts. Gentle stretching, varied workouts and intermittent “rest days” relieve the aches while also teaching your muscles to work more efficiently, burn fuel more effectively and lessen the amount of lactic acid buildup which occurs. The workout that seems to leave you a near cripple today will your “light” workout in a month or two as you fine tune your muscles and they become more efficient and stronger. And don’t forget to hydrate. Water helps flush the lactic acid out of the muscles and allows them to recover faster. Page 24
You’re probably going to look worse before you look better. Most of the ladies know by heart that cellulite is subcutaneous fat and that it’s the last to go when we diet and exercise. That’s nothing new to us. But here’s the phenomenon no fitness and dieting guru will tell you, yet it’s true and very logical: Since you lose overall body fat first, your “top layer” of fat as it were, the cellulite becomes more noticeable because it’s less buried behind other fat. In other words, for a little whileyou might actually look lumpier. Smaller, certainly, but lumpier. But it’s temporary. Keep up with your fitness routine and this temporary condition resolves itself pretty quickly. But you will be smaller. Workouts build muscle and reduce fat. Muscle weighs more than fat but it’s more compact, sleeker and obviously more toned. As your healthy muscles build and replace the fat you’re losing, you will become sleeker looking. And smaller and sleeker trumps big and lumpy any day of the week. Getting in shape is ugly. I get so sick of fitness shows and infomercials showing smiling, toned thin people in full makeup bouncing like corks in the water through their fitness routines in brand new matching sports bra and spandex pants. What most of us know logically is this and yet we still fall for the fantasy: These folks are in a studio with flattering lighting, they have stylists and makeup artists on hand and this “fitness routine” probably lasts all of 30 seconds at a pop. Not to mention God-knows-what surgical enhancement’s gone on. Let’s face it: In real life we don’t see too many natural 36Cs out there with washboard abs. I know from bitter personal experience that when you start to lose body fat, the boobs are the first to go. That’s not to say there aren’t some truly attractive, real people out there exercising. I see them sometimes. But I also know this, too, at least about my workouts: It’s not a fashion show and it’s not glamorous. I will sweat, I will be gasping for air at some point, my face will be red, my sweat-soaked hair will be plastered to my head and I’ll probably be grimacing. I will, in other words, look like hell. And I’ll stink, too. There’s nothing pretty, feminine or appealing about a workout. At least not mine, anyway. Getting in shape is work. Sometimes it’s psychological work just getting amped up and in the right frame of mind to even get dressed out is tough some days, even for seasoned athletes. And sometimes it’s physical work sweaty, achy, wheezy physical work. After all, it’s called a “workout” not a “funout.” But here’s the thing: Once you conquer the psychological work - in other words, once you’ve gotten yourself off the couch and into your workout gear
The Coto de Caza News
and step out the door (or into the gym) and get moving - the physical workout will take care of itself. Trust me. I’ve been an athletic person (running, aerobics, biking and such) off and on for 30 years. I’ve been chubby and I’ve been thin. And during those 30 years there were prolonged periods of inactivity where all I did, and wanted to do, was eat and sit around. I used to push myself to do better each day - run farther, run faster, get sweatier, “feel the burn,” and on and on and on. I’d worry over form and technique. When running, I’d worry over time versus distance. In aerobics, I’d worry about pointed toes, breathing technique and being on the beat. I don’t worry anymore. Or very little anyway. Here’s the reason why, the key to the whole thing, and it only took me 30 years to figure it out: If I just put one foot in front of the other, the workout will come. The workout will come whether I’m concentrating on form or thinking about my grocery shopping list. The workout will come whether I run the hill in 30 seconds or 45 seconds. If I’m in our spare bedroom and jump around for a half hour, it doesn’t matter whether I’m jumping to the Black Eyed Peas or jumping while watching Seinfeld reruns. It doesn’t have to be pretty and it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be. Disconnecting your mental self from what’s going on with your physical body can be a blessing. I’ve run big hills that I can’t specifically recollect because my brain was free-floating while my body handled the hill. When you put yourself on autopilot and let your body do with work (after all, your brain can’t run hills, can it?), working out also becomes a vacation for your mind and spirit as well as a healthy habit for the body. Someone, somewhere, is going to discourage you. It may be wellmeaning and unintentional or it may be a very pointed, specific sabotage attempt. It’s just human nature that we are comfortable with the status quo - it doesn’t matter whether the status quo sucks or not - we, on some level, crave our comfort zone. If sitting on the couch and weighing 180 pounds is my current comfort zone, that’s where I’ll want to be. Is it good? No. Healthy? No. Am I happy? No. What I am is comfortable. We stick with the devil we know versus the one we don’t. And I become my own saboteur. Or family members who are used to seeing you sitting around on Sunday mornings, drinking coffee, reading the paper and noshing on bagels or donuts, are uncomfortable when you try to get up and out the door for a workout. Why? Because you have gone out of your comfort zone, thereby affecting their comfort zone without their permission, and
they don’t like it. It’s not spiteful, it’s probably not intentional and they probably couldn’t even explain it themselves. But it can be threatening. For women, this concept can be particularly difficult. No offense to men, but the world is generally conditioned to accept a man doing something that makes him happy. Going to a bar, hanging out with the guys, taking in a football game..any activity which is entirely centered around the man’s pleasure, and only the man’s, is both accepted and acceptable. But what happens when mom does something for mom’s benefit and mom’s benefit only? You’re taking time away from the kids, away from the house, away from the spouse and making you the center of your universe for thirty whole minutes. Almost like you were a real person. Old habits die hard. Old, ingrained reactions die even harder. Everyone will get used to your new routine and the world won’t come to an end. Just be aware that discouragement, both self-generated and other-generated, is part of the game. Don’t let it take you by surprise and don’t let it hang around too long. Remember that the big giant controversy we’re talking about is a 30 minute workout three or four times a week. Keep it in perspective. If you’re not plotting to rob a bank or relocate the family to Sri Lanka, then there’s really no big deal afoot other than maybe bumping yourself up a notch or two on the mental priority list we all have running through our heads every waking hour. Big deal. And don’t take it personally. As human beings our kneejerk emotional reaction is to fear the unknown. You might fear your fitness routine because it’s new and unknown. Your family might be uneasy with your activities because it’s new and unknown, and therefore threatening. It’s not a big deal in the long run and it’ll pass. Big, life-altering changes often happen to us a little at a time, building block by building block, without us hardly being conscious of them. I wish you good luck, encouragement and a healthy sense of perspective with your fitness routine. Each step you take gets you one step closer to where you want to be. Literally. It doesn’t have to be pretty and it probably won’t be. Just keep taking one step at a time - which is really the only way they can be taken anyway, right?

Prepare your car for winter with these simple tips Getting ready for winter is no small feat. It takes time and planning to make sure your family and your home are ready to brave the elements. But is your car as ready as you are? If you haven’t thought about preparations for your vehicle, these simple tips will help you prepare for the colder months ahead. * Check your tires. You depend on your tires more during the winter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t worn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, make a note to check again later in the winter. Cold air will
cause the air in your tires to compress and may cause your tires to lose pressure. * Check your brakes. Your brakes will work harder once the icy conditions of winter set in. Make sure they are up to the task by bringing your vehicle in to your mechanic for a thorough brake inspection. * Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash. Putting your car through the car wash during the sloppiest season of the year may seem a strange idea but a thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements. Besides protecting your car, you’ll also be protecting the environment. Professional car washes can save up to 20 percent of the amount of water you’d use by washing your car at home. They do this by treating and reusing their water, rather than releasing toxic chemicals and grime into the storm drains, which can often occur when you wash your car yourself. You can
learn more about the environmental benefits of a professional car wash at washwithwatersavers.com. * Check fluids. It’s good practice to stay on top of fluids such as oil, windshield washer or transmission fluid. But in the winter, no fluid is more important than your coolant because, if you’re out of coolant, you’re out of heat. Your owner’s manual will tell you how much coolant you need as well and provide the correct blend. It’s also never a bad idea to keep an additional bottle of coolant in your car for emergencies. * Test your battery. A lack of coolant will stop your heater from working and so will a dead battery. Before you head out this winter, be sure your battery is working properly. No one wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery and, in the cold winter months, being stranded could be dangerous. * Check your wipers. You checked the wiper fluid along with your other fluids but don’t forget the wipers themselves. Replace old wiper blades and make sure to have a reservoir full of wiper fluid. * Winter emergency kit. Sometimes
all the preparation in the world can’t prevent a winter emergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a winter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/ brush, extra blankets or clothes - including hats and gloves - snacks and bottled water and a first aid kit. A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires. Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. By planning ahead you can ensure that your family and your car will be in for a smooth ride all winter long.
Making wellness programs work for your wallet and lifestyle By now you’ve probably heard the message loud and clear: Staying well through preventive steps is cheaper, healthier and easier for everyone than waiting until a health condition becomes an issue. From the government to your own employer, many organizations spend millions of dollars every year on wellness programs aimed at supporting individuals’ efforts to stay healthy. These programs can be a great tool if they are easy to use, engaging, and provide reliable, understandable information on wellness. Wellness programs aren’t just for those with red flag factors for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure or tobacco use. Rather, wellness programs are beneficial to everyone including otherwise healthy people who may simply be trying to lead a healthier lifestyle by increased exercise, weight loss or managing stress. In fact, the concept of “wellness” goes far beyond merely keeping up with your annual physical and taking medications to manage chronic conditions. Wellness encompasses eating right, regularly exercising, avoiding unhealthy activities such as smoking, and being an active participant in your health decision making progress. Wellness programs, often provided
through employer-sponsored health insurance or through employers themselves, provide participants with information and tools to help avoid illness and injury. But, the path to good health is different for everyone and it is important that programs are not only designed to help the right people at the right time but also to engage people in a personalized, impactful way. For example, a wellness offering such as Health Dialog’s WELLNESS Dialog program begins with an innovative Well-Being Assessment to better understand physical and emotional health, capacity for change, work-life satisfaction, and health risk. It then reports on personal strengths and opportunities, offers suggested goals and actions, provides people with the tools they need to realize their own personal lifestyle goals and incorporates fun group activities to engage participants for the long term. In order to truly make a difference, a wellness program needs to be relevant to the people using it. Participating in a wellness program can be useful, as long as the program supports not only those who are well and maintaining their current level of health or improving it, but also those who are ill and managing their care. If you would like the chance to make a wellness program work for you,
here are a few steps and guidelines to help: * Find out what your employer offers. Many support wellness programs through their health insurers, but others supplement those plans with specialized programs. Perhaps your employer offers free exercise or stress reduction classes, or offers a stipend for health club membership as part of your benefits. If your employer doesn’t currently offer any kind of wellness program, ask for one - keeping employees healthy is in a company’s best interest. * Learn your program’s tools. Most programs offer help lines that you can call and discuss your specific needs and concerns, and receive information on available tools to help you. Your plan administrator may also be able to provide information. Or you can check the program provider’s website to learn more. * Discuss your wellness program with your doctor and ask for his feedback on what tools might be of most use to you. Look for tools that address your specific needs, age and lifestyle. For example, if weight management is a concern, your wellness program’s nutritional counseling might be helpful. If you’re looking for ways to become more active, ask if your program offers advice on exercise.
* Take advantage of incentives. Some programs offer incentives for successful participation in weight loss or smoking cessation programs. These incentives are a great tool for tracking your progress and keeping yourself motivated to achieve your goals.

New Things for New Years: the Challenge
By Christi Bowers This is a challenge for you to do new things on New Years Day to start off the New Year right. If you just do anything, no matter how crazy, no matter how stupid, no matter how unlike you- you’re making your beginning to changing things for the better for 2015. You may think that nothing will change if you do something different, but you will never know until you try. And, the silliest things may be the ones that do the most good for you. I am going to give you a list of potential things you could do on January 1, 2015 (or January 1st of any year). Try any ten out of fifteen of these, or come up with some on your own. Brainstorm. Get together with a friend. Make it an activity for New Years day. Just do it, and come up with the ideas and then make them happen! 1. Call a relative you haven’t spoken to for the past year. Surprise them! Stop saying that if they wanted to talk to you, they would have called you. Stop worrying that they still hold a grudge for something you did ten years ago. Start the reconnection, and see what happens! 2. Visit a relative that you don’t often visit. Call first, or just show up! So what if they aren’t there, at least you made the effort! If they are, they may be truly surprised and gracious to see you! 3. Go to an old folk’s home and offer to volunteer for an hour doing anything they need. If you have a talent, you could offer to sing for an hour or do magic tricks for an hour. 4. Go up to one person in Walmart or any store that you don’t know, and introduce yourself and make a new friend. If all the stores around you are closed on New Year’s day, then just take a walk in your Page 28
neighborhood and talk to someone. This might be best done in daylight hours! 5. Call a charity and make a $10 donation. (You could give more if you can afford it.) 6. Say one nice thing to someone you care about. 7. Wear something totally out of context for yourself. If you always wear jeans, wear a dress. If you always wear coat and tie, put on some jeans. 8. Make a recording of yourself singing, and send it to a record company. If you have a different talent, do that. For instance, if you write poetry, send a poem to a publishing company or submit to a new website. 9. If you’re a content producer, write an article for a subject you have never tackled, or a new category like finance. 10. Go New Years day carolling. Go to your neighbor’s houses and start singing songs outside their doorstep! Sing songs that celebrate the new year! 11. Take a drive down a road you have never been on before, and enjoy the view. 12. Instead of using lights, use candles all evening long once it gets dark on New Years day. 13. Say one romantic thing to your partner. You could even write a small poem. Who cares if it rhymes. Let me tell you that just getting any poem can melt someone’s heart, even if it doesn’t make any sense and isn’t anywhere near being a poetic masterpiece. 14. If you’re a child, offer to do the dishes. Do some chore other than what is normally asked of you. 15. Go outside and take a walk. Don’t come back until you learn at least one new thing about your neighborhood.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 14-53147-COMM. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
