Choosing a Dog to Match Your Personality So, You’re Going to Get a Dog. That’s Wonderful and I Urge You to Consider Rescuing One from Your Local SPCA or Another Shelter L. V. Paganini So, you’re going to get a dog. That’s wonderful and I urge you to consider rescuing one from your local SPCA or another shelter. You’ll get a great pet and friend and save him/ her from being put down. There is usually a small fee which pays for the physical exam, getting neutered and possibly include a microchip. They normally have a large selection of dogs and some of them are puppies. I got my German Shepherd mix, Morgan, from my local animal shelter and have never regretted it. So, you’re going to get a dog. It’s time to decide how to select
your dog. It’s a good idea to match your dog to your personality - the things you enjoy doing and your lifestyle. If you’re a jock you’ll want an active dog. But if your idea, of exercise is kicking back on the couch with a good read, you’ll prefer a dog that doesn’t require a lot of exercise. Consider your lifestyle - if you work until late into the evening it will be difficult to exercise and play with your dog. Is there a neighbor who would spend some time with your pet during the day while you’re gone? (My exneighbors had three kids who loved to play with Morgan even when I was around. I’m sure Morgan is very sorry we moved.) Are you out of town a lot? If so, you’ll need to think about who will care for your pet while you’re gone. You want to find a pup that complements your personality and your lifestyle. Here are some characteristics of some the various breeds of dogs. Intelligent dogs • Australian Sheepdog • Belgian Sheepdog • German Shepherd • Keeshond • Poodle Dogs that don’t require much exercise • Brussels Griffon
• Dachshund • French Bulldog • Manchester Terrier • toy breeds (such as a Chihuahua or Pekingese) Good with kids • Beagle • Basset Hound • Brittany Spaniel • English Cocker Spaniel • Old English Sheepdog • Pug Good city dogs • Basenji • Boston Terrier • Bulldog • Lhasa Apso • Pug • Scottish Terrier • Welsh Corgi Quiet dogs • Basenji • Borzoi • Chesapeake Bay Retriever • Greater Swiss Mountain Dog • Whippet Friendly dogs • Bearded Collie • Brittany Spaniel • Bichon Frise • Golden Retriever • Labrador Retriever • Old English Sheepdog These are for purebreds but it’s a
very general rule of thumb. Morgan is a German shepherd/Burmese Mountain Dog and is very, very friendly. Consider try going to a dog show, a pet shop and a couple of trips to the local animal shelters. And, talk to friends who have dogs. If this sounds too much work, reconsider why you want a dog. They are a lot of work, albeit very rewarding work. If you take good care of your dog, he/she will be a wonderful companion. But, you must realize there will be chores to do, exercising and playing with your dog and the expense of feeding and caring for your pet.

By Threesia Goff If you’re a dog owner, you likely know how important it is to provide your dog with a space of their own inside your home. That space doesn’t have to be huge or anything fancy, dogs just need a small corner where they can retreat when they feel overwhelmed. One great place is under a large end table because the table is already using up space, and it’s secluded enough to make the dog feel secure. Now that we know what type of area is a good fit, let’s think about what to put in that area. Here are a couple of things you can add to your dog’s personal space, and what you should leave out. A dog bed There are many different dog beds on the market today, and some can be quite expensive. My dog, Daisy
currently has three beds in different areas of the house, and I’m planning to make her a fourth. If you are a crafty person like me, who likes to crochet, you can make your dog a bed with a little effort and with little more than a few skeins of yarn. Here are four free pet bed crochet patterns to choose from. 1 Skein Pet Bed Crocheted Dog Bed Pet Bed from Recycled Sweaters Dog Bed Something to nest with You may have seen your dog stomping or scratching around on their bed, a dropped towel, or even your fresh laundry, and wondered what on earth they are doing. Dog’s stomp around on these items to make a “nest.” They are basically rearranging the material into
something comfortable to sleep on. Giving your dog something of their own to use for nesting in their private space is a good idea. Daisy likes any type of blanket, old shirts, and even old towels. If I don’t give her something to use she will steal something from around the house. What to leave out of the space Since this is a place the dog can go when he/she wants, there is no need to have things like food or water in the area. With all the stomping around they are likely to do these things will just end up all over the floor, and that means you end up with a mess to clean up. No matter what you chose to put in your dog’s area, the most important thing is that you actually give them space. A dog that can get away and relax, is usually a happier dog.
The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it. ~Warren Buffett

Dog Obedience Training - How to Teach Your Dog Basic Obedience Commands By Crystal Ray Obedience training can make a remarkable difference in a dog’s behavior, and every dog can benefit from obedience training. After successful obedience training, a dog that was once out of control becomes alert to the commands of his owner, and a dog with obedience training often calms down considerably. There are dog obedience classes available for professional assistance in dog obedience training, but you can begin obedience training at home. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your dog picks up your commands, and your dog will benefit from obedience training at home before beginning formal obedience training classes. The following information will help you teach your dog basic obedience commands. Most dogs will be able to pick up these obedience commands relatively fast. After your dog learns these basic commands, your dog will be ready to begin other training that will turn your dog into an obedient well-behaved family member that you’ll be proud to take in public. Praising and Reprimanding Your Dog Before beginning home obedience
training with your dog, it’s important to know how to properly praise and reprimand your dog. When your dog successfully obeys a command, praise your dog calmly and quietly by gently rubbing his head and saying “good dog.” If you get too excited when your dog obeys a command, your dog will think it’s time to play, and this will only encourage hyperactivity. If your dog is slow to learn obedience commands, don’t lose your patience with your dog. Never hit your dog or raise your voice when he doesn’t properly preform a specific command. This type of behavior won’t help your dog learn the command. It will only instill unnecessary fear in your dog. A dog who is scolded during obedience training will consider obedience training an unfavorable experience. The more upset you become the more nervous you’ll make your dog, and in the end, he won’t learn a thing. Always use the same tone of voice and the same simple phrase when giving commands to your dog. Changing the pitch of your voice or changing the words in a command will only confuse your dog. Consistence and kindness are the keys to successful obedience
training. Before Beginning Obedience Training People often make the mistake of trying to teach their dog commands without the use of a leash. A long leash is required to properly teach your dog obedience commands. A leash will allow you to guide the dog, and a leash will help him understand what he’s suppose to do. A pocketful of treats is also quite helpful during obedience training. When your dog successfully executes a command, offer him a tasty treat as a reward as well as verbal praise and a pat on the head. Don’t offer a treat every time your dog obeys a command. Treats are helpful during training, but they shouldn’t be required after your dog understands what you expect of him. Sit Command Teaching a dog to sit is one of the easiest commands a dog will learn, and this command is often the first lesson in obedience training. A dog must first learn to sit on command before he will be able to learn other commands. To teach your dog to sit, push your dog’s hind end to the floor, and gently pull up on his leash while commanding him to sit. Immediately upon sitting, praise your dog and offer him a small treat for his efforts. Before long he’ll know exactly what you want him to do when you tell him to sit. Heel Command Heeling is a command all dogs should learn. Heeling is helpful when going for walks in crowded locations, and walking with a dog who heals is much more pleasant than walking with a dog who pulls and meanders. A heeling dog walks next to the left leg of the owner, and the dog’s nose is slightly in front of the knee. To teach your dog to heel, simply
command your dog to sit next to your left leg. Command your dog to heel while using his name. For instance say, “Frisky, heel,” and begin walking energetically forward. If the dog pulls ahead or lags behind, sharply yank the leash and command him to heel. If your dog doesn’t understand the command, walk briskly in the pattern of a figure eight. He will be forced to heal while walking in this pattern, and if you praise him he’ll eventually learn the command to heel. Eventually you’ll be able to walk your dog with slack in his leash while he heels properly. Stay Command Dogs instinctively want to follow their owners, but teaching a dog to stay really isn’t very difficult. Dogs live for love and praise, and even the most rambunctious dogs can learn to stay. To teach your dog to stay, simply command your dog to sit next to your left leg while you loosely hold his leash. Place your palm downward, and a few inches from his nose. In a firm voice, tell him to stay. Walk several feet away, and if your dog stays where he is told, go back and praise him with a treat and a gentle pat on the head. If your dog follows, take him back to the original position and try it again. Eventually your dog will understand the command, and he’ll look forward to your praise. Come Command A dog must first learn to stay before you begin teaching him to come to you on command. Once the dog is good at staying on command, walk several feet away from your dog with his leash in hand, and tell him to come while facing him and gently tugging on his leash. When the dog comes to you praise him with a tasty treat and a pat on the head. After he becomes good at responding to this command, you’ll be able to remove his leash and increase the distance.

Hot tips for cool crops: Get growing on your fall garden You might think the end of summer means bidding farewell to fresh, homegrown veggies. Not so - many cool-season crops hit their heyday as autumn temperatures drop, and some even taste better when nipped by a light frost. As long as their basic growing conditions are met, vegetable plants don’t care what season it is. If you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to grow your fall garden all winter long. If, however, you live in a colder area, your growing season will be shorter. In most regions of the country, gardeners plant fall vegetables in August or September for harvest in October and November. You’ll need to carefully calculate your growing season so you can ensure plants have time to produce before freezing weather arrives. Generally, you should plant fall vegetables when daytime temperatures range between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (the cooler the better); night temperatures should be above 40 degrees, and you’ll need enough sunshine to ensure plants will get at least six hours of sun per day. You’ll also need to give plants at least an inch of water per week. To get started, remove all the debris left over from your summer garden so fall crops have plenty of room to grow. Add compost to your garden beds and
landscapes. Soil should be light, wellaerated and well-draining - since fall gardens are more likely to get soggy from rain. Mulch will keep the soil cool and moist during the last days of summer. You can also mix in an all natural fertilizer like Bonnie Plants, Herb and Vegetable Plant Food, made from soybean oilseed extract, known to contain 150,000 nutritional and organic compounds that include vitamins, minerals, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, plant hormones and carbohydrates. All are vital to plant growth. Next, find out your local frost and freeze dates. For most areas, frost doesn’t have to end the fall growing season. Monitor your local weather forecast during late September and early October so you know when frost is coming. Once you know your local frost and freeze dates, you can begin planning - and planting - your fall garden. Remember, when growing vegetables in the fall, plants need to be in the ground in time to mature before the first frost, and to yield most of their harvest before the first heavy freeze. Some cool-season crops mature in as little as 30 to 40 days, while others may take several months to produce. Since time is of the essence when planting a fall garden, start out with transplants that are already growing.
Choose fast-maturing varieties, like Bonnie Plants, to get the most for your harvest. The gardening experts at Bonnie suggest these fall crops: * Winterbor kale - This vigorous producer weathers winter easily, even in very cold climates. Cut outer leaves so that the center can continue growing. Space transplants about 12 inches apart * Georgia collards - Another leafy green similar to kale, Georgia collards are prized for their sweet, cabbage-like flavor. Space transplants 36 inches apart. * Romaine lettuce -- Romaine packs more vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients than other popular types of lettuce. Space transplants 18 inches apart. * Early dividend broccoli - Popular, productive and easy to grow, this broc-
coli is high in fiber and calcium. Set transplants 18 inches apart. * Mustard greens - Offering spicy hot leaves, this is a very fast-growing, nutritious vegetable. Mustard greens always taste sweeter when nipped by frost. Space plants 12 inches apart. * Bonnie hybrid cabbage - Bonnie’s best cabbage is high in beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and fiber. Space transplants 24 inches apart. * Arugula - These fast-growing leafy greens are super-food for your bones. The leaves are “nutrient dense” and low in calories. Leaves grow best in cool weather. You can continue to enjoy fresh, homegrown vegetables through fall and even into winter when you start with some expert knowledge and the right plants. coto de caza Village homeowners news merryhill assisted living and coto equestrian center sale update By the time you read this newsletter, PHASE 1 of our 6-year street plan will be completed. The streets included in PHASE 1 were chosen by our engineering firm based on observation & testing results and reflect their professional opinion on which streets fall in to which year. Streets were either ground down and provided a new overlay or given a 2-layer top-coat seal based on need. Speed bumps were re-formed according to OC Fire Department specifications (the speed bumps on Via Halcon & Alondra are an example of what all of our speed bumps will look like by th e end of our 6-year street plan). There are a few areas that need remediation, so you may still see crews over thenext few weeks. Please contact management if you have questions. We appreciate your patience with our street closures and some of the delays. Attention Seniors Keep an eye out in the newsletter for an upcoming Holiday party. You voted for some Senior Events, so we are busy working out the details. Thanks to all thosewho replied to the survey. Merryhill & Equestrian Center Update Many of you have been asking about updates regarding these sites. We are trying to get the most up-todate, accurate information to share with you. Please register on the blog to receive updated information as it becomes available www.cotovillageonline.com. The Board has not taken a stance on these 2 potential developments at this point in time, but wanted the community to be informed. Oxbow Partners (assisted living) Oxbow Partners is proposing to purchase the Merryhill site and build an assisted living facility. Oxbow Partners (developer) and Coto Neighbors (homeowners against assisted care facility) have provided information which is posted on our blog. Oak Grove, LLC (homes) Silver Bronze Corporation owns the equestrian center (including the polo fields) and the Coto Valley Country Club. There is currently an offer in place from an investor to purchase a portion of the Equestrian Center (via purchasing existing Silver-Bronze memberships) & Merryhill site, and develop them into single family homes and provide improvements to the equestrian center. A copy of the tender offer, with FAQs and map have been uploaded to the Village Blog for your review. PARKING Because 2013 is an odd year; all on-street parking will be on the odd side of the street. Please remind your guests, contractors and service personnel to park on the odd
side of the street; we need to keep the streets clear. By parking on just one side, you are doing your part to keep the residents of The Village safe. Please also remember to park in your garage first and on your driveway second and please remember not to park on your grass or bare dirt areas next to your driveways. Thank you. REMINDERS DwellingLIVE Phone Call Changes Just a reminder of the policy regarding calling DwellingLIVE versus using your computer to register your guests. Each homeowner/address, will be allotted 3 free calls per month (reduced from 5 previously). Starting on the fourth call, each call will incur a charge of $5 being assessed to the homeowners account. So if a homeowner makes 8 calls, they will be assessed a total charge of $25 (3 free, 5 calls @ $5/per call). Remember, registering guests via the computer is always free, so register as many of your guests as possible online at www.dwellinglive.com Tree Removals It is critical that everyone understands that trees cannot be removed without prior written approval from the association. More specifically, anyone caught removing or damaging trees in the common area is liable for the full replacement cost of a like sized tree. This can be quite expensive, so please contact management if there is any question regarding tree maintenance. ARC - External Changes We just wanted to remind both new and long-time residents the process for
Architectural (ARC) approval for exterior modifications. Any work being done on the outside of your homes needs to go through ARC approval, even like-for-like changes. This is not to make it difficult, but to protect the Village and its residents. The ARC has made this process as painless and easy as possible, with quick turnarounds for standard or like-forlike changes. The Board has even reduced or eliminated most fees to encourage residents to maintain and improve their homes. We all want the same thing: A great place to live. Please contact Jeremy at FSR with any questions. Dogs on Leashes Please remember to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Not only for the safety of your neighbors but for your dog’s safety, as well. Recently there was an issue with a loose dog in the Village which could have been prevented had the dog been on a leash. Mountain Lions in The Village Recently there was a mountain lion sighting in the common area between upper Coyote and Faisan. There are occasionally mountain lions passing through the Village common areas so please make sure that your pets and children are secure and under adult supervision at all times especially at dusk and dawn. There have not been any serious problems reported with mountain lions but please be aware that mountain lions are around Thank you!! A big thank you to Village homeowner and OCFA member
Roz Von Harz who was able to negotiate with a “Hot Shot” crew from the Fire Department for the cutting of some downed trees by the youth lot. The cutting of these trees by the crews presents a substantial savings to the HOA. Thank you Roz! The evening of Russian splendor, “Rachmaninoff - From Russia with Love,” rolled out a variety of treats, revealed one after another like Russian nesting dolls. Hosted by the Symphony’s board of directors and co-chaired by Ruth Ann and John Evans and Karlyne and Nick Greenko, the grand event included a pre- and post-concert reception, dinner, entertainment and the first concert of the 2013-14 Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation Classical Series: “Conrad Tao Plays Rach 3,” led by Music Director Carl St.Clair. The dinner and party, presented by South Coast Plaza with support from retail partner Omega at Tourbillon Boutique, raised $165,000 in support of the Symphony’s artistic and education programs. “We were thrilled the evening was such a success and exceeded its fundraising goal,” says co-chair Nick Greenko. “It was an elegant, intimate affair with wonderful overtones of Old Russia and full of people delighted to be Bill Gillespie poses with Susan St. Clair, and Carl St. Clair, Music there. Dancers from the UCI corps de ballet and a soprano from the Pacific Chorale singing the Rachmaninoff ‘Vocalise’ added an even deeper dimension Director of the Pacific Symphony. to the event and we are so pleased at the collaboration we have between the symphony, the Chorale and UCI.” The night of Russian merriment began with a swanky cocktail reception, where high-top tables were draped in gold, black and teal and accented with flowers. Guests mingled while sipping wine and “Tolstoy Tangs” (lemon and vodka cocktails) and munching on an array of hors d’oeuvres. The musical trio Third Wheel played live music and five members of the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance delighted onlookers by performing Russian folk dances. Attendees were then escorted into the Grand Ballroom, adorned in Russian elegance with teal tablecloths and gold and crystal candelabra centerpieces decked out with candles, purple roses, white hydrangeas, gilded gardenia foliage and pieries. The Symphony’s board Chairman Michael Kerr welcomed guests and thanked fellow board members and event sponsors. As they dined, guests were treated to a performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” by soprano Kellee King accompanied by pianist David Clemensen. At the conclusion of the meal and at the center of the grand evening was, of John Daniels and Sandy SegerPianist Conrad Tao performing course the concert taking place across the arts plaza in the Renée and Henry strom Daniels. on stage during Concert. Segerstrom Concert Hall. Led by St.Clair, the program was full of drama and thundering piano, as internationally celebrated pianist Conrad Tao, just 19 years old, provided a dazzling display of virtuosity, tearing into Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 (featured in the 1996 hit movie “Shine”). Already an audience favorite, Tao was returning for his third appearance with the Symphony. Hailed as both an “exciting prodigy” and “breathtaking,” Tao gave a jaw-dropping performance of the highly demanding and muchloved work - drawing multiple standing ovations and resulting in an encore that delighted the audience. The program, which opened with the short and jubilant “Festivities” by California-based composer Peter Boyer (who was in attendance), concluded with Brahms’ monumental Symphony No. 4, a piece that was sweeping with melodic writing and dual emotions of joy and sorrow. The Opening Night celebration continued with a private intermission reception in the Box Circle lobby of the concert hall. At the conclusion of the performance, guests were welcomed back to the Center Club’s Encore Lounge for a post-concert party to enjoy champagne, a variety of Russian chocolates, other candy and desserts, plus music by The Joey Sellers Quartet. An appearance by the star of the evening, Conrad Tao, was the cherry on the cake. High School Grads Need to Understand Credit By Jason Alderman If you’ve got a recent high school graduate who’s getting ready to head off to college or join the workforce, let me share a few lessons I learned the hard way about managing personal finances that you can pass along to your kids. Young adults are just starting to build their credit history. In the coming months they’ll probably encounter many unfamiliar expenses – and many financial temptations. If they’re not careful, a few ill-thought decisions made now could damage their credit for years to come. Here are several actions your kids can take to build good financial habits and strong credit – and a few minefields to watch out for: Probably the most fundamental tool to for young adults to help manage their finances is a basic checking account and debit card. A few tips to pass along: Look for a bank/credit union that charges no monthly usage fee, doesn’t require minimum balances and has conveniently located ATMs so you don’t rack up out-of-network ATM charges. Enter all transactions in the check register and review your account online regularly to know when deposits, checks, purchases and automatic payments have cleared. Don’t write checks or make debit card purchases Page 14
unless the current balance will cover them – many transactions now clear instantaneously. Banks must ask whether you want overdraft protection. If you opt for coverage, understand that overdrafts can be expensive – up to $35 or more per transaction. Request text or email alerts when your balance drops below a certain level, checks or deposits clear, or payments are due. Credit cards for young adults can be a useful tool, but they must be used responsibly. By law, people under 21 must have a parent or other responsible adult cosign credit card accounts unless they can prove sufficient income to repay the debt. If you allow your child to become an authorized user or joint account holder on one of your accounts, remember that any account activity, good or bad, goes on both your credit reports, so careful monitoring is critical. Another way to build credit history is to start out with a “secured” credit card – a card linked to an account into which you deposit money. Typically you can charge up to the amount you’ve deposited and then replenish the account with more funds. After they’ve made several on-time payments, have your kid ask the lender to convert it to an unsecured card, or to at least add an unsecured amount to the account. Just make sure that the lender agrees to report your payment history to at least one of the three credit bureaus; otherwise,
The Coto de Caza News
the account does nothing to improve your credit. If they qualify for an unsecured credit card, have your kids follow these guidelines: Always make at least the minimum payment – on time – each month. Strive to pay off the full balance each month; otherwise, the accumulated interest will add significantly to your repayment amount. Avoid using credit cards for cash advances, which often incur upfront fees and begin accruing interest immediately. Look for a card with no annual fee and also compare cash advance, late payment, balance transfer, over-the-limit and other fees. For more tips on building and maintaining strong credit, visit What’s My Score, a financial literacy program for young adults run by Visa Inc. (www. whatsmyscore.org).

Driving with dogs: Tips to keep everyone in the car safe It’s only natural for man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes - and mind - off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido
is with you, remember these tips: * Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat - if you’re in an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. * Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. * Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s
secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite new way to travel. * Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep
everyone in your car safe - and you may even qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger. For more safe driving tips and information about AARP Driver Safety, visit www. aarp.org/drive.

ROTARY CLUB HONORS DAVID HANNA WITH THE FIFTH ANNUAL ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARD Hanna’s Restaurant and Bar Owner Recognized for Contributions to the City of Rancho Santa Margarita In recognition of his contributions to the community, the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/Rancho Santa Margarita del Sol will honor David Hanna, owner of Hanna’s Restaurant and Bar, at the 5th annual “Ethics in Business Award Breakfast.” The event will take place Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 a.m. at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita. The “Ethics in Business” award was created to recognize a local business leader who conducts business using the highest ethical standards and makes a significant positive contribution to his/ her community. “David Hanna has done so much for so many in our community,” said Derek Godfrey, president of the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/ Rancho Santa Margarita del Sol. “Whether it is an educational or military cause or efforts benefiting
hospitals or seniors, David is always there. From financial contributions to donations of his restaurant and team, or by rolling up his sleeves and getting involved directly, David is a true leader in this community and exemplifies Rotary’s values of truth, fairness, goodwill and helping others.” More than 20 years ago, Hanna followed in his grandfather’s footsteps in the restaurant business and opened Haute Caffé, the first coffee house in Rancho Santa Margarita (RSM), which was quickly followed by the opening of a second location in the area. Both shops eventually sold, and in 2005, he opened Hanna’s Restaurant and Bar, offering modern American Steakhouse cuisine prepared with a classic, traditional flair. Since then, Hanna’s Restaurant and Bar has grown to become one of the most successful neighborhood restaurants in south Orange County , having been awarded with numerous accolades, including being
named one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States by Open Table. Last year, Hanna also opened the restaurant’s DaVino Wine Room. Hanna has been a resident of Rancho Santa Margarita for more than 25 years, giving back to the community in meaningful ways and making Hanna’s Restaurant and Bar a community mainstay. In 2009, he founded Educate Rancho, a non-profit organization comprised of community businesses and business leaders seeking to improve the quality of education in schools located in RSM. He is also an ongoing sponsor and supporter of local businesses, organizations, sporting groups and recreational programs such as Santa Margarita Catholic High School, City of Hope , RSM Little League, Mission Hospital and California Youth Services. The cost to attend this event is $35 per person. For reservations, contact Karen Hume at karenhume@cox. net or call (949) 584-9981.

Years ago some of the reasons people gave for not having the cavities in our teeth filled were:” the “shot”, the “the “drill”, the “numbness”, the pain” Dr. Michael Tessier associated with old-time dentistry. But, by using the Whisper Jet, a micro miniature sandblaster using 50 micron-size particles of aluminum oxide, and the Waterlase MD Laser, we get your fillings completed without anesthetic, and with no pain, because of today’s technology, Remembering that the decay process starts with acid-induced demineralization of the enamel of the teeth, here are some ways to avoid the need for dental work: Go to the dentist every six monthsfrequent visits help avoid big problems. Avoid industrially-manufactured foods, like chips or cookies or crackers. Instead, or after, eat raw carrots, celery or apples. Real foods have larger, fibrous particles which actually clean decay-producing sugars off the teeth). Avoid soft drinks, sweetened or otherwise. Instead, drink water, fluoridated or not. Chew sugarless gum. This stimulates acid-neutralizing saliva which counteracts the acidic end-products of bacterial metabolism that cause decay, and mechanically cleans the teeth.

Brush properly with fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily. That little point contact where adjacent teeth touch each other is not accessible to a toothbrush bristle. Remember, you only have to floss the ones you want to keep. By the way, there’s a significant link between the phosphoric acid used as a preservative in dark soft drinks and Alzheimer’s. Another reason to avoid them. We recently found a hard candy that’s sweetened with a Xylitol that coats the teeth with a decay-reducing micro-film. Something like fifteen flavors, no aftertaste. Good Stuff. There is a genetic pre-disposition to susceptibility to decay. Some people get cavities irrespective of how well they take care of their teeth; some people don’t take care of their teeth at all, and still never get cavities. It isn’t necessarily fair (how much in life is?), but the above can help. “The more I work with the laser and the sandblaster, filling teeth without the need for drilling and therefore anesthetic, the more I realize how much dentistry has changed over the last 30 years. When the drill and the carbide burr were our only cutting options, we made it more likely that, in their later adult hood, these teeth would crack, ultimately needing crowns. Today, we’re leaving these teeth stronger. This stuff is great,” he says with a smile. Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores Plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. Local Mormons commemorate 25th anniversary of the Santa Margarita ward by John Skousen On September 13-15, 2013, members of the Santa Margarita ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints commemorated their 25th ward anniversary. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), a ward is a geographical congregation that worships together. The ward is presided over by a bishop who has a job description similar to a pastor of a Christian denomination. Bishops serve without any remuneration, generally in addition to their regular careers. The current bishop, William Chapman, originated the concept of the event and assigned Jon Coleman, his first counselor, to direct a committee of members to plan the event. “We planned an activity that was tailored to all ages and interests,” explained Coleman. The event began with ward members gathering together at the Newport Beach Temple on Friday with both youth (ages 12 and over) and adults participating in ordinance activities and spiritual worship. On Saturday, September 14, the day was packed with recreational activities, including a family stroll around RSM Lake, mountain biking, and even surfing at Doheny Park in Dana Point. The high point of the daily activities was the “ward 25th birthday party picnic,” held at the RSM City Hall Park behind the Bell Tower. Members Annette Brennan, Beth Green, and Juli Warnick planned and hosted the event. Coleman explained, “The party featured a live band, games for primary-aged children, and a rousing rendition of ‘happy birthday’, balloons, birthday cake, and other refreshments.” On Saturday evening, there was a special all-adult conference held at the Santa Margarita Stake Center, with special guest speakers Arlen and Debi Woffinden. Bishop Woofinden was second bishop for the Santa Margarita ward. The couple spoke about their work in the church and offered their unique local, regional and global perspectives. Locally Arlen was a bishop and stake president. (An LDS stake president oversees 6-7 wards in an area.) Regionally he served as President of the Brazil, Belo Horizonte Mission and most recently he is serving worldwide as an associate general counsel for the church. As general counsel Woofinden works for the church in providing legal support in its operations around the world. The Woffindens shared their own unique perspective on the church’s growth over the past 25 years – from Santa Margarita to Brazil and to the rest of the world. The evening began with a welcome reception in the cultural hall, where the walls were covered with hundreds of photographs taken during the ward’s 25 year history. Coleman mused, “It was wonderful to watch people enter the cultural hall, greet one another and then spend time reminiscing with friends surrounding the photos.” On Sunday morning, members were delighted during morning worship services when all six bishops, who had served in the ward over the years, spoke concerning the spiritual lessons they learned as they served as bishop. These bishops included Peter Vidmar, former Olympian, and Sterling Brennan, the current stake president. The members in attendance at the meeting enjoyed the many stories and words of inspiration each bishop had to offer regarding their service. One bishop, Arlen Woffinden, commented how nice it was to learn from the ward’s first bishop, Bob Warnick, when he was called as bishop. To conclude the wonderful weekend of events, the bishops posed for a group picture outside of the ward chapel.
Peter and Donna Vidmar of San Clemente, California and Ken and Tess Ward of Dana Point, California, return to Rancho Santa Margarita to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Santa Margarita ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Veterinarians Warn Pet Owners of the Dangers of Pet Dehydration Balboa Veterinary Hospital in San Diego is warning pet owners about the dangers of animal dehydration during the warm summer months. According to the San Diego veterinarians, higher summer temperatures and extended outdoor playtime increases the risk for dehydration in dogs and cats. Dehydrated pets are at greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Without veterinary intervention, heat stroke can be fatal for pets. The animal hospital is urging pet owners to keep pets hydrated, learn the warning signs of heat stroke, and to be vigilant about pets’ overall health during the summer months. Warmer summer temperatures and increased outdoor activities raises the risk for dehydration and heat stroke in pets, says the veterinary team at Balboa Veterinary Hospital. The veterinarians are urging pet owners to be vigilant this summer and keep pets hydrated. “Dehydration is common among pets during the summer months,” said veterinarian Dr. Juan Pablo Romero. “Animals, just like humans, require additional water intake during warmer weather in order to stay hydrated. Additionally, due to increased outdoor Page 24
activities, pets are at a greater risk for over-exertion, which elevates the risk for dehydration.” Water is essential to all living beings, including dogs. Water makes up 80% of a dog’s body, says, Dr. Romero, and a drop in fluid levels can have a significant impact on an animal’s overall health. Dehydration occurs when fluid levels drop below normal due to decreased water intake or increased fluid loss. Symptoms of dehydration include sunken eyes, lethargy, dry mouth, loss of appetite, and depression. “During the summer, dehydration can occur after outdoor activities, such as an afternoon playing on the beach in Coronado, a long run, or even a vigorous game of fetch,” said Dr. Romero. “Pet owners need to be vigilant about not only providing water after outdoor activities, but managing their pet’s level of exertion.” Dr. Romero says pet owners should provide pets with constant access to fresh water and change it regularly. If pets will be outside for extended periods, the veterinarian recommends partially freezing a pet’s water bowl. As the day progresses, the water will melt, giving pets constant access to

fresh water. During the summer months, Balboa Veterinary Hospital reports an increase in the number of pets who are dehydrated or suffering from heat exhaustion. “Many of these cases could be prevented through vigilance and reduced outdoor activity,” said Dr. Romero. “Pets can become dehydrated even on overcast days that are not ‘hot’. Vigilance and early intervention are key to preventing more serious health problems.”
Pet owners who suspect their pets are dehydrated should contact their veterinarian, says Dr. Romero. Balboa Veterinary Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Associations (AAHA). The vet hospital provides comprehensive wellness care services, including vaccinations, annual exams, pet surgery, and dog grooming. Veterinarians Stress the Importance of Good Pet Dental Care Pets receive plenty of veterinary care, but many pet owners overlook the importance of pet dental care. Without regular oral care, pets are at risk for gum infections, gingivitis, swollen gums, tooth infections, periodontics, and halitosis. Pet owners can perform their own examinations of their pet mouths, and clean their pet’s teeth using canine toothpaste and a canine toothbrush to help ensure their pet’s optimal health. Oral examinations should be a part of every pet checkup, since they can help veterinarians detect and treat diseases including mouth tumors, cysts, and gum diseases. The common signs that a pet may be experiencing a pet dental disease include: extreme bad breath, eroded tarter that may start to turn black, and the pet may begin to experience loss of appetite. Eighty percent of dogs and cats past the age of four have some type of pet dental disease. The Balboa Veterinary Hospital says that most pet owners do not realize that these dental diseases, such as periodontal disease, affect more than just the mouth. Bacteria breed in the mouth can also spread to other vital organs, such as the
kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart. The veterinary hospital warns pet owners if proper pet care is not taken pets can lose teeth due to the disease, or may need infected teeth to be extracted. San Diego veterinarians recommend that along with daily teeth brushing, for both cats and dogs, annual dental care visits to a San Diego vet is vital. Regular tooth brushing goes a long way toward keeping pets safe and healthy, and can easily be performed at home in a few minutes. “I recommend that pet owners brush their pet’s teeth daily to remove tartar that can cause swollen gums and gingivitis,” says Dr. Miranda Alexander of Balboa Veterinary Hospital in San Diego. San Diego veterinarians encourage pet owners to purchase dog friendly toothpaste and tooth brush and make it a routine to brush pet’s teeth at least once a day. Most pets can get used to the idea of having their teeth brushed and may come to see the routine as a bonding experience. San Diego veterinarians can teach pet owners how to examine their pet’s mouths and brush their pet’s teeth. “Chew toys also play a role in dog oral health,” notes Dr. Alexander of Balboa
Veterinary Hospital. As pets chew, they scrape tartar off their teeth. Owners can feel good about leaving pets at home with nylon bones. Although the San Diego veterinary hospital cautions pet owners to never leave pets alone with rawhide chews, as they present a choking hazard. Balboa Veterinary Hospital
offers comprehensive pet dental care, including oral examinations, preventative dental care and treatment of oral health issues affecting pets. To learn more about pet dental care and pet dental diseases, please visit Balboa Veterinary Hospital’s website at http://mybalboavet.com.

5 Best Dog Breeds for Families By Ashley L Do you have a child that is bugging you constantly for a dog? Are you running out of excuses for getting one? Maybe it’s time to add that new furry member to your family, but before you decide, there are a few key factors you should take into consideration. While we all tend to choose the cutest puppy we see, it’s not necessarily the best way to choose a dog. When looking for the perfect dog for your family, be sure to also consider size, temperament, your living situation, and cost of ownership. Gaining knowledge of these factors, will ensure you find the best suitable breed for your family’s lifestyle. With over 150 dog breeds to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming finding the right breed for you. So, to lend you a helping hand, I have compiled a list of 5 of the best known dog breeds for families. 1. Labrador Retriever Recognized by the AKC, as the most popular dog breed in the United States, these gentle and affectionate dogs make excellent pets for families. Smart, obedient, and devoted, Labs are good with children of all ages, as well as other dogs and pets. Although, they are known to be very friendly, they are also a very protective breed, and are great choices for those wanting added security for their family. As a member of the working class, Labradors are extremely energetic and require lots of exercise to stay healthy. 2. Golden Retriever Similar to the Labrador, Golden Retrievers are very sweet and affectionate family dogs that love pleasing their owners. Their patience and gentle disposition, make them great companions for children of all ages. Whether it’s chasing a ball, swimming in a lake, or hiking in the mountains, these highly intelligent animals are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way. Like other larger dog breeds, Golden Retrievers are extremely energetic and require daily exercise, to keep healthy and burn off excess energy. 3. Beagle Known to most as the hunting dog, these floppy eared hounds make great pets for families with children. They are very gentle, loving, and loyal animals with spunky personalities, that are sure to win over your heart. Although, Beagles are very intelligent animals, they have been known to be quite stubborn, and love to get into mischief. Their innate ability for tracking and curious nature often get these pups into trouble. For this reason, they do best in homes, with large fenced in yards, to provide security and decrease the chance of your pet running off. Beagles do well in most living situations, but are very energetic and require lots of exercise. 4. Bulldogs Don’t let their tough exterior fool you, Bulldogs are one of the most gentle dog breeds and have a very sweet personality. Their thick, rugged build make them an excellent choice for families with rambunctious children. Although, they are not the most energetic of dog breeds, they love to play and require lots of attention. The Bulldog’s mellow attitude make them a great indoor pet, and perfect for families who live in apartments or have small yards. 5. Dachshund Nicknamed the “weiner dog”, for its hot dog shaped appearance, Dachshunds have been a family favorite for years. Their short, stubby legs and long, floppy ears are sure to make you smile. Similar to the Bulldog, Dachshunds are definitely not the most energetic breed, but love attention and make great indoor pets. Although, they tend to be shy around new people, they adapt well to most living environments, and get along great with other pets and children of all ages.

mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking powder and milk. Stir in natural peanut butter, applesauce and honey. Blend thoroughly, so that ingredients are evenly distributed throughout. With hands, knead the dough until it forms into one big ball. Then wash and dry your hands and grease a couple of cookie sheets. Take the dough and roll into little balls and flatten between your hands and drop onto the cookie sheets spaced about an inch or so apart. Bake for 25 minutes in oven until firm or lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool before serving. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use. Hammy Whammy Treats Ingredients: 1cup wheat germ 1 jar (2.5 ounces) of strained Ham baby food (you can substitute strained beef baby food if you like) 1/2 teaspoon of beef bouillon granules
1 tablespoon grated mild cheddar cheese 2 teaspoons milk Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In mixing bowl, combine wheat germ, baby food, bouillon granules, and milk. Roll into dough with hands and then work in cheese. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Roll dough into small balls about 1 inch in size and gently pat with hands and place on cookie sheet. You can lightly press the cookies with a cold fork to make a criss cross pattern, the way you would press peanut butter cookies. Bake for approximately 20 minutes and remove from oven and cool before serving. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
