IMPORTANT ELECTION FOR RANCHO RESIDENTS NEXT WEEK
Last call for SAMLARC members in Rancho to make your vote count
By April Josephson Photo by Richard Reese In the Rancho Santa Margarita Landscape and Recreation Corporation election going on now, SAMLARC is attempting to make an important change to its bylaws, called “Measure A.” All members should pay close attention to Measure A, and take the time to vote in this important election—before it’s too late! All ballots must be received either via mail or hand-carried to the SAMLARC business office in RSM before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. SAMLARC is a master-planned community association that includes 13,645 households in Rancho Santa Margarita, and has an annual budget about half the size of the budget for the entire city of RSM. Most people don’t realize the impact that SAMLARC has on our surroundings. SAMLARC is responsible for landscape and all of the parks throughout roughly 80% of the city. Almost 30 years ago, SAMLARC was formed by the original developer of Rancho Santa Margarita, and was Page 2
designed to manage and maintain the landscape and parks in our beautiful community, without the benefit of having a city or other resources to rely upon. With time, comes change. Yet, the SAMLARC bylaws have not changed. That is why the SAMLARC Board of Directors decided to bring forward Measure A. Measure A was created to address outdated provisions in the SAMLARC bylaws, which made sense when the community was being built—but have long since outlived their usefulness. One area of Measure A deals with antiquated language. Even though the community is built-out, the SAMLARC bylaws still heavily reference the developer—as though the developer was still involved. Measure A removes references to the developer in the bylaws, to simplify and bring them in line with current laws, and the way SAMLARC operates today. SAMLARC members can review the proposed bylaw changes simply by accessing the CD that was sent as a part of the 2015 SAMLARC election
The Coto de Caza News
package. The most important aspect of Measure A has to do with making each SAMLARC member’s vote count. Currently, when you vote in the annual SAMLARC election, your vote only counts if your district’s delegate attends the annual meeting to cast your ballot—even if you have voted by properly completing and submitting your ballot to SAMLARC before the election deadline. Although there are over 13,000 SAMLARC members, there are less than 90 delegates. In past elections, the results may have been different had each member’s individual vote been counted. If Measure A passes, all properly submitted member votes will be counted, so there will be no second-guessing election results, or worries that each member’s vote is not equal. The delegate system was set up by developer to streamline elections while they were running SAMLARC. With construction long since completed and the developer out of the picture, the delegate system
is actually counterproductive, and costly for SAMLARC to utilize when managing the election process. With Measure A, the current SAMLARC Board of Directors wants to insure that every owner’s vote counts. (Whether or not your assigned delegate shows up.) However, to implement the changes Measure A, EVERYONE needs to vote in this election. As you are likely aware, it is difficult to get a majority to vote in any type of election. Because of the singular importance of this election— SAMLARC has held workshops and even sent people door-to-door to raise awareness of the changes. It is now up to you to do your part by voting “Yes” on Measure A and submitting your ballot. Don’t forget that your ballot must be completed and received by mail or walked in to the SAMLARC business office at the corner of Santa Margarita Parkway and Tomas, before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2015.

Coto ’s Goydos wins Champions Tour event By Craig Dolch / Associated Press. Coto de Caza’s Paul Goydos closed with a birdie for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke victory over Gene Sauers on Sunday in the Champions Tour’s Allianz Championship in Boca Raton, Fla. Goydos chipped to a foot from behind the par-5 18th green and tapped in for his second victory in 12 career starts of the 50-and-over tour. He won twice in 507 starts on the PGA Tour. “Statistics are a wonderful predictor of the past,” Goydos said. “Part of it is experience and maturity. If I played like I did today 10 years ago, I don’t think there’s any way I would have won this tournament. I didn’t have my best game, but I got it around.” On a wild day at Broken Sound where nine players had a share of the lead at some point, Goydos finished at 12-under 204 to claim the $255,000 first prize. He chipped in for an unlikely birdie at the difficult ninth and stayed atop the leaderboard the rest of the day. “It was a shootout without great
scores,” Goydos said. “The course played tough today.” Sauers birdied his final two holes for a 67. It was his fourth runner-up finish on the Champions Tour, including a playoff loss to Colin Montgomerie last year in the U.S Senior Open. “I’ve lost the last five playoffs I’ve played in. I was hoping to break that streak,” Sauers said. “But I’m ecstatic with the way I played.” Fred Funk chipped in for eagle on the final hole to tie for third at 10 under with John Huston, playing for the first time in 18 months because of a neck injury, and 2014 winner Michael Allen. Funk and Huston shot 66, and Allen had a 67. Jose Coceres, who started the day nine shots back in 45th place, played his first 16 holes in 10 under to tie Goydos for the lead. But Coceres bogeyed his 17th hole and finished sixth after a 63. The biggest comeback in Champions Tour history was when Jay Sigel rallied from 10 back to win the 1994 GTE West Classic.

8 Tips for Pet Parents on Suitable Etiquette for Pets 1. Keep barking under control: The pet parent with the barking dog is most likely not the most popular neighbor. Although barking is not always preventable, ensure pets receive proper training so they don’t bark incessantly. Avoid leaving dogs alone for long periods of time, especially outdoors. Making sure pets have enough exercise and plenty of toys to provide mental stimulation will help curb barking. For tips and tricks, consult one of Petco’s Positive Dog Trainers. All Petco dog trainers are certified in AKC Canine Good Citizen and STARR Puppy testing. The AKC STARR Puppy training is designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC Canine Good Citizen certification is a widely-recognized high standard of polite behavior and excellent preparation for therapy dog training. Each dog who completes these courses will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. 2. Don’t let cats wander: Although cats can exhibit very independent behavior, the outdoor cat that is always wandering into their neighbor’s yard, may not be welcomed with open arms. Keep cats from visiting the family next door by providing them a cozy space inside the home with enough toys to keep them mentally stimulated throughout the day. Petco’s Playscapes Modular Cat Furniture will ensure cats can satisfy their need for exploration and climbing without wanting to leave the house. 3. Keep the hair and smell at bay: When dining out with pets, ensure dogs are properly groomed to keep
shedding to a minimum. A smelly dog shedding its winter coat is never pleasant near food so bathe pets regularly and use a shed control shampoo. When entertaining at home, make sure guests want to return by removing pet hair from furniture and smelling of the animal. Be sure the cat’s litter box is scooped daily and use an odor absorbent litter such as Petco Dual Odor Guard Scoopable Cat Litter. Keep small animal and reptile habitats clean and use potty pads, like Four Paws Wee Wee pads to help cut down on guests stepping in a new puppy’s “accident.” 4. Clean up waste: Walking into the front yard and stepping in a pile of poop from a neighbor’s dog can be upsetting. It may sound simple, but be sure to pick up waste when walking a dog. Products, like the eco-friendly Earth Rated Poop Bags, easily hook to the dog’s leash making it simple to carry along on a walk. 5. Obey the rules: Keep dogs leashed at all times while at parks and in other dog-friendly public places. Excited dogs who are off-leash may run and jump on people or children or hurt themselves by running away from their pet parent. Only take a dog off-leash at a dog park that allows it. Remember to obey all marked rules at the dog park and don’t forget to close the gate behind you so other dogs can’t escape. 6. Positive reinforcement is key: Barking orders is not the way to encourage a pet to behave, especially when it is done in public. Disciplining pets in front of others can make people uncomfortable. Instead, train pets by reinforcing good behavior
with loving attention or a treat. Keep a calm tone and never raise your voice, especially when in public. 7. Use table manners: Petco understands that pet parents love their animals, but others may be uncomfortable when certain people take it to the extreme, especially while at a restaurant. Never feed pets from the pet parent’s lap or plate. Not only can certain people food be dangerous for pets, but this behavior can encourage pets to beg. Always feed pets from their own food bowl away from human consumption. 8. Not everyone loves animals: It may be hard to believe, especially since pets are such a part of family life, but not everyone is an animal lover. Some people may be allergic to dogs or cats and some can even fear animals. To avoid an unpleasant run in, never let pets run up to a stranger. When taking out other types of pets like birds, reptiles or rabbits, keep in mind that others may feel uncomfortable around these animals. On the other hand, these pets may attract more attention since they are not seen in public as often, so keep them safe by always encouraging strangers to ask before petting or handling them.

Tips for new pet parents Whether you’re acquiring a new puppy or kitten for your household or adopting an adult pet from a shelter or rescue organization, the following tips will help you get off on the right foot with your newest family member. * What’s up, doc? Just as you require regular visits to your doctor and dentist to make sure you stay healthy, so does your new pet. A veterinary visit should be a oncea-year event, minimum, and more frequent check-ups may be needed, depending on your pet’s age and health status. Regular visits are likely to include a thorough exam, weigh-in, immunizations and parasite checks (a heartworm test and fecal exam). Blood tests and dental cleanings are also routine procedures. * Healthy eating. Your new pet may be eyeing your plate with interest, but don’t give in. Pets shouldn’t eat like people. Cats are carnivores; they need plenty of protein in their diets roughly twice the percentage that you do - and they need it in the form of meat, poultry or fish. And while your dog, like you, is an omnivore, that doesn’t mean he should share your meals. A food formulated especially for dogs is much better and treats should make up no more than 10 percent of a dog’s caloric intake. * Parasite prevention. You’ve probably heard of pests like
heartworms, intestinal parasites, fleas and ticks but understanding how and when to prevent them is a different matter. Dogs and cats can become infected with heartworms, although the resulting disease differs somewhat between the two species. Heartworm disease can be deadly, or it can reduce the quality of life of both dogs and cats. Mosquitoes spread heartworms and dogs and cats need to be protected year-round, thanks to a mosquito’s ability to survive in a variety of environments. A bonus is that many heartworm preventives also protect pets against other internal parasites. For more information on how to protect your new pet against heartworms and other parasites, talk to your veterinarian and visit the American Heartworm society website at heartwormsociety.org. * Bathing. Most of us wouldn’t dream of letting a day go by without a shower or bath. But daily bathing is unnecessary for pets and can dry out their skin and hair. Most dogs are fine with a bath every three months, unless they get extra dirty or have silky hair. Cats usually keep themselves clean without any help although brushing long-haired cats on a regular basis is advised to keep their fur tangle-free and help prevent hairballs. * Making a connection. Dogs and
cats relate to their owners in different ways. As a pack animal, dogs expect you to lead their pack and give them rules to follow. Dogs make faces - in fact, it’s estimated that they have 100 different facial expressions, thanks to their mobile ears. Cats attach to their people as social partners and use affectionate behaviors, such as purring, kneading and rubbing against you to show their affection. They’re also quite vocally expressive and can produce more than 100 different sounds. * Sleep habits. While cats have a reputation for dozing, both cats and
dogs spend more than half their time in slumber. Like babies, puppies and kittens sleep more than adults, although their sleep patterns can be erratic. Keep in mind that excessive sleeping can be a sign of boredom. Most pets will be glad to forego a nap for playtime or a walk. Bringing a pet into your home is one of the greatest joys in life, but it means new responsibilities. Understanding your pet’s behavior, as well as the do’s and don’ts of pet health care, will help make your bond with your pet a lasting one.

Stay Fresh Throughout Your Day
When walking into a meeting, after lunch, before a presentation, or making a new acquaintance, the last thing you want to worry about is not looking your best. In a society based on a go-go-go lifestyle, quick mirror checks can give you that extra boost of confidence before important moments in life. Here are some tips to help you look your best throughout the day. Mid-day Mirror Check For many people, breaking for lunch often means running to a nearby restaurant for a quick bite before returning to the office. Take a moment to freshen-up prior to heading back to work, because you never know when you’ll need to be at your very best. * Touch-up that makeup. Often in the course of the morning, makeup can rub off or smear. Do a check in the mirror to reapply concealer or mascara. Using a pre- and postmakeup primer will also help keep your makeup from smearing. * Post-lunch check. Before you reapply any lip product, freshen up your mouth. On-the-go products such as the Colgate(r) Wisp(r) mini-brushes are perfect for a quick brushing that will keep your mouth clean and fresh, with no rinsing required. Plus they are
small enough to pack in a purse or keep in your desk drawer. Check out the full line at www.ColgateWisp.com. * Apply fragrance. Perfume, cologne and body spray will often fade over the course of the morning. Take an opportunity to re-apply in the afternoon. Remember to be mindful of those with whom you share office space. Opt for light scents and don’t over-apply. * Style your ‘do. Combing or brushing your locks can help re-set your hairstyle. Products such as hairspray and dry shampoo can give your style additional body and boost. * Drink your H20. The benefits of drinking water show in your mood and in your skin. Staying hydrated will help prevent you from running low on energy and will keep your skin looking fresh. Make sure you have a water bottle at your desk and drink up! Before the Big Pitch When preparing for an important meeting, use mirror time to run through your talking points while prepping your look. * Straighten that tie. Make sure to check your attire. It doesn’t hurt to have a backup suit or outfit in the office in the event of a coffee collision. Having another option will keep you stress-free in those moments
following a spill. * Stash those products. Keep a supply of travel-sized personal care products in a drawer at the office. Store a comb, deodorant with antiperspirant, cologne, contact lens solution or eye drops, a lint roller and pocket mirror. These items are great to have on hand for last-minute meetings or to freshen up after a midday walk or trip to the gym.
* Keep those pearly whites fresh. A clean mouth is important for making a good impression. Post-coffee or following lunch, consider using a Colgate(r) Wisp(r) for a convenient brush to refresh your mouth. These tips will help you feel confident and focus on what’s important, whether you’re presenting during a meeting or heading to a date straight from the office.

US Ambassador to Iraq Featured at World Affairs Council OC Photos by Ann Chatillon The World Affairs Council of Orange County held a special dinner at the Weston South Coast Plaza Hotel in Costa Mesa with featured keynote speaker, former Ambassador to Iraq Paul Bremer who spoke on the subject, “America-Still the Indispensable Nation: Lessons Learned in the Aftermath of Iraq and Afghanistan”. Orange County Chapter Chairman Tom Pappa welcomed approximately 200 attendees to the Event and among the distinguished guests in attendance, recognized were Lewis Johnson, CEO Alelo, Inc., UC-Irvine’s Dr. Peter Navarro, OCBJ’s Jerry Sullivan, Judge Jim Gray, Irvine Mayor Steven Choi, World Affairs Council National Board Members Timor Rafiq and Serge Tomassian, Joanne Sokolski, Orange County office of Protocol, and Dr. and Mrs. Kamal Batniji, who has performed extensive medical humanitarian work worldwide. Dinner was served – folks dined on mixed winter greens with dried cranberries, candied pecans, and crumbled goat cheese with balsamic vinaigrette for starters. Main course served was a delicious braised boneless short-ribs with forked mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables, then dessert had a trio of Pistachio Crème Brulee, dark chocolate mousse, and a wild berry shot. Ambassador Bremer started his day with breakfast with five students selected by the World Affairs Council where he answered questions about his job and the world at large. He then spent lunch with a group of 30 young professionals where he addressed some of the tasks included in his job as ambassador. The evening caped his visit in Orange County with his keynote address; he stated the United States remains the only capable leader to defend the values of the Western World. He also answered questions from the crowd, was very charming and received a standing ovation. During three decades as a professional diplomat, Bremer served in numerous capacities including Ambassador to the Netherlands and Ambassador at Large for Counter Terrorism in the Reagan administration. He was appointed Presidential Envoy to Iraq by President George W. Bush in 2003. The Ambassador received the State Department Superior Honor Award, two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards, and the Distinguished Honor Award from the Secretary of State. In 2004, Ambassador Bremer received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service in Iraq. He also holds a B.A. from Yale University, Certificat d’Etudes Politiques from the University of Paris, and MBA from Harvard University. Spotted in the crowd were Chapman College’s Dr. Jim & Cigden Coyle, Drs. Harry and Asha Sahota (inventor of the angioplasty balloon), incoming World Affairs Council President Mark Chapin Johnson, Dr. Bogie Maglich, R & D Medical’s David Sheraton and his fiancé Veronica Contreras, Bowers Board Member Janis Agopian, Rutan & Tucker’s Ted and Sherry Wallace, and Black Starr & Frost’s Moustafa Imam. Underwriters for the affair were Serge & Mona Tomassian, Bruce & Carol Hallenbeck, David Sheraton, Hal Smith, Rod and Liz Maxson, and Dr. Parmis Khatibi. The World Affairs Council of Orange County is part of the World Affairs Councils of America, the largest non-profit international affairs organization in the United States. Veterinarians Warn Pet Owners of the Dangers of Pet Dehydration Balboa Veterinary Hospital in San Diego is warning pet owners about the dangers of animal dehydration during the warm summer months. According to the San Diego veterinarians, higher summer temperatures and extended outdoor playtime increases the risk for dehydration in dogs and cats. Dehydrated pets are at greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Without veterinary intervention, heat stroke can be fatal for pets. The animal hospital is urging pet owners to keep pets hydrated, learn the warning signs of heat stroke, and to be vigilant about pets’ overall health during the summer months. Warmer summer temperatures and increased outdoor activities raises the risk for dehydration and heat stroke in pets, says the veterinary team at Balboa Veterinary Hospital. The veterinarians are urging pet owners to be vigilant this summer and keep pets hydrated. “Dehydration is common among pets during the summer months,” said veterinarian Dr. Juan Pablo Romero. “Animals, just like humans, require additional water intake during warmer weather in order to stay hydrated. Additionally, due to increased outdoor
activities, pets are at a greater risk for over-exertion, which elevates the risk for dehydration.” Water is essential to all living beings, including dogs. Water makes up 80% of a dog’s body, says, Dr. Romero, and a drop in fluid levels can have a significant impact on an animal’s overall health. Dehydration occurs when fluid levels drop below normal due to decreased water intake or increased fluid loss. Symptoms of dehydration include sunken eyes, lethargy, dry mouth, loss of appetite, and depression. “During the summer, dehydration can occur after outdoor activities, such as an afternoon playing on the beach in Coronado, a long run, or even a vigorous game of fetch,” said Dr. Romero. “Pet owners need to be vigilant about not only providing water after outdoor activities, but managing their pet’s level of exertion.” Dr. Romero says pet owners should provide pets with constant access to fresh water and change it regularly. If pets will be outside for extended periods, the veterinarian recommends partially freezing a pet’s water bowl. As the day progresses, the water will melt, giving pets constant access to
fresh water. During the summer months, Balboa Veterinary Hospital reports an increase in the number of pets who are dehydrated or suffering from heat exhaustion. “Many of these cases could be prevented through vigilance and reduced outdoor activity,” said Dr. Romero. “Pets can become dehydrated even on overcast days that are not ‘hot’. Vigilance and early intervention are key to preventing more serious health problems.” Pet owners who suspect their pets
are dehydrated should contact their veterinarian, says Dr. Romero. Balboa Veterinary Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Associations (AAHA). The vet hospital provides comprehensive wellness care services, including vaccinations, annual exams, pet surgery, and dog grooming. not everyone needs surgery to fix this problem.. Alternatively, I make a noninvasive removable oral appliance (like a retainer) that comfortably repositions the lower jaw forward, thereby clearing the base of the tongue away from the windpipe minimizing breathing restrictions to give you more oxygen while you are sleeping. I have tried several designs, both on myself and patients with similar problems, and have finally found THE WINNER. My wife and my neighbors, and all the patients for whom I’ve made this appliance and their neighbors, are very grateful. We all awaken more refreshed in the morning because we got a more profound, more restful nights sleep. Incidentally, a patient told me today that in a hospital sleep study he had 168 sleep apnea episodes without the appliance, and seventeen episodes with it. Also, he had a seventeen per cent reduction in blood oxygen while sleeping without the appliance, and only a three per cent reduction with it. If your sleep habits are disturbing other people, before going the surgery route, a call to Dr. Tessier’s Office for a complimentary consultation appointment may be in order. Dr. Michael Tessier’s office is located at 28562 Oso at the intersection of Oso and Antonio parkway in the center near the carwash and Starbucks. The telephone number is 949-459-7212.

Snoring, or noisy breathing while asleep affects slightly more men than women. There are several reasons for this, including Dr. Michael Tessier flabby tissue in the throat, loose or long soft palates, or obstructed nasal passages. Sleep apnea or the temporary cessation of breathing is a result of some of that redundant tissue or the base of the tongue covering the wind- pipe. Snoring and sleep apnea prevent a good, deep night’s sleep, which can lead to a sleepy day, even narcolepsy which causes people to fall completely asleep during the work day. Undue stress on the heart can also be a result of a poor night’s sleep. According to a Yale University study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that obstructive sleep apnea can triple the risk of stroke or death. 4% of adult men and 2% of adult women in this country suffer from the malady, including, according to a 2003 study of three hundred players, about 14% of the National Football League. While there are surgical procedures used today to cut away redundant tissue and open up the breathing passage

Despite parents’ best efforts, bedtime can be the most stressful time of the day. Many kids fight sleep and resist going to bed, and questions of “but why do I have to go to bed?” are often answered with an unsatisfying, “Because I said so!” To h e l p e l i m i n a t e b e d t i m e frustrations, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends parents take the following steps to positively influence their child’s sleep habits: * Keep a bedtime routine. A consistent routine (10 to 15 minutes long) - brushing teeth, changing into pajamas and reading a book - helps children go from alert and active to a quieter state, giving them the ability to fall asleep on their own. * Focus on timing. Kids who go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time every morning sleep better and have fewer night wakings. Studies also show that kids who go to bed around the same time each day have fewer behavior problems and perform better in school. “Research has shown consistent bedtimes and bedtime routines encourage cognitive development,” says Dr. M. Safwan Badr, president of the AASM. “Educating children on necessary sleep health and establishing effective bedtime routines will help foster healthier lifestyles as they grow into adolescents and adults - reducing the epidemic of insufficient sleep in America.” * Teach and demonstrate the value of sleep. Getting enough sleep is critical to the health and wellbeing of every child, and sharing the importance of quality sleep will help them understand why. Two interactive apps developed by the AASM give parents new resources to teach their children about the value of sleep
using tablet devices. The apps - I See the Animals Sleeping and The Animals Sleep - use interactive storytelling and activities to show animals’ sleep patterns, environment and adaptations. They illustrate how sleep is important for all animals, and people too. Based on two educational children’s picture books, the apps will help kids understand the need for a soothing sleep environment and the importance of developing healthy sleep habits that will last their lifetime. “It’s important that children develop an understanding of why they have to go to sleep because it will help them grow and play and feel better during the day - and not just because their parents say so,” says Dr. Shalini Paruthi, spokesperson for the AASM. “The best method to teach children about a new topic is to start with something that interests them; in this case, that topic is animals.” The AASM recommends tablet use with children during the daytime for educational interaction. The illustrated books that inspired the apps are both available in hardcover for use as part of a child’s bedtime routine. The kids’ sleep apps are available for download on the iPad, Kindle Fire or Android tablets. Parents should pay special attention to any persistent problems such as loud snoring, which is a warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea. If parents have concerns about how their child is sleeping, they should discuss them with their child’s doctor. I See the Animals Sleeping and The Animals Sleep are available for free download from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon. For more information on children’s sleep health or the AASM, visit SleepEducation. com.

Driving with dogs: Tips to keep everyone in the car safe It’s only natural for man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes - and mind - off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido is with you, remember these tips:
* Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat - if you’re in an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. * Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. * Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and
comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite new way to travel. * Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep everyone in your car safe - and you may even qualify for a multi-year
automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger. For more safe driving tips and information about AARP Driver Safety, visit www. aarp.org/drive.

Should You Buy Pet Insurance? By Jason Alderman One topic I’ve learned to avoid with new acquaintances until I know them better (along with politics and religion) is where they stand on the treatment of pets. Some people, when their dog gets sick or badly injured, say, “It’s an animal – that’s just part of the circle of life.” Others consider Rover a close family member and would take out a second mortgage to save his life. Pet owners from both camps probably see the barrage of ads for pet insurance and wonder whether it’s worth the expense, which might be several thousand dollars over the life of your pet. I did some research and the best answer I can come up with is, it depends. First, ask yourself: Do you regard pet insurance as a financial investment, where you expect to get back more in benefits than you paid out in premiums over the pet’s life? Or, is it more like auto or homeowner’s insurance, where you hope nothing ever goes seriously wrong, but you want coverage in case there’s a catastrophe? Either way, here are some basic
facts about pet insurance that may help you decide whether it’s right for you: Pet insurance shares many features with human health insurance: Policies typically have annual deductibles, copayments and exclusions, and some limit which veterinarians, clinics and hospitals you can use. But there are numerous differences as well. For example, pet insurers are allowed to refuse coverage for preexisting conditions and to set annual and lifetime payout limits. Among the many other restrictions you should watch for when comparing plans are: • Premiums vary greatly depending on where you live and may increase based on your pet’s age, breed, veterinary cost inflation and other factors. • Typically you must pay the vet or hospital bill out of pocket and get reimbursed later. • Many plans deny or restrict coverage for congenital or hereditary conditions (like hip dysplasia in dogs or kidney failure in cats) and preventable conditions like
periodontal disease. • Along with annual and lifetime maximums on benefits paid out, there may be a limit on how much it will pay for treatment of an individual illness or accident. • If your pet suffers a particular disorder one year, don’t be surprised if that condition is excluded at renewal – or if you’re required to pay an additional fee for future coverage. • Pets over certain age limits frequently are denied coverage. • Certain breeds are often excluded or only eligible for restricted coverage. • Some carriers let you augment your accident and illness policy with optional “wellness care” coverage for things like spaying and neutering, annual physicals, vaccines and routine tests. Make sure the additional premium is worth the extra cost. Perhaps the biggest challenge when choosing pet insurance is trying to compare plans, apples to apples. There are about a dozen carriers in the U.S. Each offers a variety of plans with varying deductible, copayment and maximum coverage amounts,
as well as different covered benefits and exclusions. You can go directly to their websites for plan details and to request a quote, or use an independent comparison website to pull quotes from multiple carriers. I’d recommend creating a spreadsheet to compare benefits and costs side by side, just as you would when shopping for auto insurance. Bottom line: If you decide pet insurance isn’t right for you, at least be sure you’re setting money aside to cover expected – and unexpected expenses.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this Internet Web http://search.nationwideposting. com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA1400260844 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 14-53482. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
