Grilling Up Healthy Flavor If you’re looking to add fresh flavor and good nutrition to your menu, look no further than the humble avocado. In a salad, as a spread or slider topper, or even on the grill (yes, they can be grilled), avocados are packed with healthy goodness. “A lot of people don’t know just how good California avocados are for you,” said Ben Holtz, President of California Avocados Direct. “They have nearly 20 essential nutrients – that’s a lot of good nutrition packed into a great tasting fruit.” • Avocados have mono and polyunsaturated “good” fats that are recommended as part of a healthy diet; they can help reduce blood cholesterol levels and decrease your risk of heart disease. • Avocados are rich in beta-sitosterol, which helps lower cholesterol levels. Studies have shown an average drop in cholesterol of 17 percent after consuming avocados for only one week. • Avocados contain 60 percent more potassium than bananas. Holtz says that avocados are best when they’re as fresh as possible, during peak consumption periods when the fruit moves quickly off the shelves. “This is wonderful for Page 2

those that live near the growing areas in California, but not so easy for everybody else living across the country. That’s why we started California Avocados Direct – to offer fresh avocados to those who want to buy the best available, and who want to know the farmer that grew them.” Holtz says that they are able to hand pack and ship fresh avocados the very same day they’re harvested, letting them share farm-fresh produce with families all across the country. “As a family farm, we live on and care for the land,” he said. “This allows us to give daily attention to detail and the ability to deliver the rich, creamy flavor of premium California avocados that our customers have come to expect.” An avocado lends itself to a variety of seasonings and ingredients that mix well with almost all salad and sandwich fillings. The next time you break out the grill for friends and family, try these Haute Grilled Avocados as a deliciously different appetizer or side dish. Looking for a yummy, unique way to say “Happy Valentine’s Day”? Beautiful, bite-sized, heart-shaped cakes offer a delicious solution. Whether for your sweetheart, friends or family, or perhaps a special dessert for a romantic dinner, these tiny treats from the Wilton Test Kitchen will delight. Enrobed in pastel icing, decorated with shimmering matching sugar pearls, these little gems are a cinch to make. Use a cake mix for convenience and bake in a petite heart-shaped silicone mold. Cakes pop right out of the mold after cooling (and the silicone is super easy to clean after baking). Icing the hearts couldn’t be simpler, even though it might appear that you need an expert hand. The secret? Ready-to-use decorator icing in a can. Microwave the icing – in the can (one can at a time) – until it reaches pouring consistency, and tint with pastel icing colors. Pour over the cooled cakes to cover tops and sides, then arrange pearls on top. Perfect, Petite Pastel Hearts look bakery beautiful, but are lovingly homemade. How special is that? For more sensational ideas for Valentine’s Day or other celebrations, visit www.wilton.com. Petite Pastel Hearts Each serves 1 1 package (about 18 ounces)

out clean. Cool in mold on cooling grid 15 minutes; remove cakes from mold and cool completely. Repeat with remaining cake batter. Remove lid and foil seal from canned icing. Heat each can in microwave at Defrost (30% power) 20-30 seconds; stir. Repeat until consistency of icing will pour. Stir in icing color. Place cooled cakes on cooling grid positioned over cookie pan. Working with 2 to 3 treats at a time, pour icing on center of cake; continue covering top so icing drips down and covers sides. Let set briefly; position Sugar Pearls before icing sets completely.

Stay on trend this winter season As we head into the cold winter months, there is no need to sacrifice your style for warmth. This year, incorporate on-trend looks from the runway into your wardrobe to keep your look fashion-forward throughout season. Here are five fantastic looks for fall and winter from celebrity stylist, Cristina Ehrlich. 1. Men’s suit styling Menswear is no longer reserved for the boys as women around the world are adapting men’s suit styles and making them their own. This trend embodies looks inspired by Savile Row - the famous street in London known for tailoring the attire of some of the world’s most famous men. “Patterns like herringbone and pinstripes are central to this look,” says Ehrlich. “While traditional tailoring for men - like the haberdashery cut - is being refreshed with a feminine silhouette.” 2. Neo-punk The neo-punk look channels the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Sid and Nancy, and singer/songwriter, Siouxsie. Add a little edge to your wardrobe with tartan, vinyl, chains, studs and spikes. Metals make ideal neo-punk accessories. Ehrlich recommends stacking a few customizable PANDORA bracelets

and rings in mixed metals for a fashion-forward look that is all your own. 3. Tone-on-tone Color remains big for winter, with tone-on-tone trending on and off the runway. To pull off this look, choose an outfit in a rich hue and then bring it to life by mixing in complementary shades and textures. For example, an emerald green top is enhanced with accessories in various shades of bright green. “Jewelry in harmonious shades can perfect the tone-ontone look with minimal effort,” adds Ehrlich.

4.- Renaissance fabric mixing This season’s hottest designers are showing a reincarnation of 18th and 19th century patterns blended with colorful, contemporary fabrics. This Renaissance inspired look is far from what you’ll find at a medieval fair. To incorporate this trend, Ehrlich likes to pair a long, full skirt with a cropped cardigan. “Have fun mixing fabrics to create a one-of-akind look,” she says. “Paisley and pinstripes? Of course!” 5. Mid-century T h e s u l t r y, f e m i ni ne l oo k s

associated with film-noir are brought to life with this runway trend. Celebrate classic beauty with nipped-waist tops and flowing, billowy skirt-suits. Complete your outfit with accessories - try necklaces that mix sterling silver, 14 karat gold and sparkling stones. “No matter what your personal style, these five trends are sure to bring your look to new fashionable heights,” says Ehrlich. “By mixing fabrics, colors, prints and accessories that embrace the top trends, you’ll look and feel great all season long.”

The Toll Roads App Update Features More Ways to Pay Tolls Operators of The Toll Roads (State Routes 73, 133, 241 and 261) have released version 2.0 of The Toll Roads app to make toll paying more convenient. This version’s new functions will make driving The Toll Roads easier—even after cash toll collection is removed from Orange County’s 51-mile toll road network in May 2014. The Toll Roads app’s latest update allows customers now to sign up for one of the three new ExpressAccount types introduced last month to give cash-paying customers more choices for how to pay tolls without stopping at toll booths and fumbling for change (see ExpressAccount options below). The new One-Time-Toll payment option is designed for infrequent toll road drivers and visitors who may use The Toll Roads at their convenience and pay their tolls within 48 hours after their trip by using the latest Toll Roads app or by visiting www.thetollroads.com to pay online—all without the need to establish an account. The app is available for download by accessing the Apple App Store or Google Play Store from a device and, then, typing in “FasTrak” or “The Toll Roads” in the search function. After installation, customers may immediately access a current account, open a new account, pay

a One-Time-Toll, view rates and toll locations. “The Toll Roads continually seek ways to make our customers’ experience fast, reliable and convenient,” said Neil Peterson, CEO of the Transportation Corridor Agencies, which operates The Toll Roads. “This latest app upgrade is another innovative way to improve our customer service.” The app allows users to sign up for FasTrak or an ExpressAccount or pay a toll using the One-Time-Toll options. Customers with a FasTrak or ExpressAccount may use the account management features of the app, including: View account balances Make payments Edit account information Add or remove vehicles, including rental and loaner vehicles Request additional FasTrak transponders Review recent activity. TCA was the first toll road operator in the nation to offer an app for toll account management. Since its original release in May 2012, nearly 100,000 customers have downloaded a version of The Toll Roads app. FasTrak customers don’t need to make any changes with the removal of cash toll collection on The Toll

Roads. FasTrak is still the preferred way to pay tolls electronically with the lowest tolls and ability to drive all tolled bridges, lanes and roads in California. With the new, transponder-free ExpressAccounts, images of a vehicle’s license plate taken on The Toll Roads are linked to an account and the appropriate toll is collected. ExpressAccounts can only be used on The Toll Roads (SRs 73, 133, 241 and 261) and the toll is on average 20 percent higher than the toll paid by a FasTrak customer. When customers sign up for an ExpressAccount, they may choose one of three payment options: Prepaid – Customers open an account and prepay tolls, which are deducted from whenever they use The Toll Roads. Charge – At the end of each day that tolls are incurred, customers’ tolls are charged to the credit card on file for those trips. Invoice – Customers are sent an invoice at the close of the month for tolls incurred that month; no need to use a credit card or link a bank account to your account. This account type includes an invoice fee. The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) are two joint powers authorities formed by the California legislature in 1986 to

plan, finance, construct and operate Orange County’s 67-mile public toll road system. Fifty-one miles of the system are complete, including the 73, 133, 241 and 261 Toll Roads. A quarter of a million people from all over Southern California use TCA’s toll roads each day. Elected officials from surrounding cities and county supervisorial districts are appointed to serve on each agency’s board of directors. Public oversight ensures that the interests of local communities and drivers are served and that TCA continues to meet the region’s growing need for congestion-free transportation alternatives. Mom was right, you should eat more veggies - here’s how you do it With the new year upon us, people are thinking about changing their eating habits for the healthier. For many, that means vowing to eat more vegetables; the majority of Americans say they’ve been trying to eat more fruits and vegetables over the past year, according to a poll by the International Food Information Council Foundation. And, with good reason; eating plenty of vegetables and fruits can help ward off heart disease and stroke, control blood pressure and prevent some types of cancer, according to Harvard School of Public Health. How many servings of vegetables do we need to eat? The USDA recommends between two to three cups for most adults (more if you exercise more than 30 minutes per day) and between one to two and a half cups for kids. It may seem overwhelming to try to pack that many veggies into everyone’s daily meals, but there are actually a lot of fun, easy and delicious ways for the whole family to eat more vegetables. Let’s start with breakfast. Veggies may not be top of mind at this time of day, but it’s easy to sneak some into your first meal and get lots of nutrients to kick start your day. If you are a warm breakfast type of

person, try adding spinach, peppers and tomatoes to your eggs in the morning, or make it easy and flavorful by adding salsa into a serving of scrambled eggs or on top of an omelet. If you’re a breakfast on the go type, throw some kale, spinach, celery or cucumber, along with fruits like berries and bananas, into a smoothie and take it with you. For snacks, cut carrots and celery into sticks ahead of time and store them in the fridge for easy munching. Then, when you get hungry pour a few tablespoons of a delicious ranch dressing, like OPA by Litehouse Greek-style yogurt dressing, which is light on the calories and fat, has zero sugar, and is gluten-free, into a small bowl and dip the carrot and celery sticks, or even tomatoes on toothpicks. You can also try baking kale or sliced beets mixed with olive oil and spices on cooking sheets until they are crispy for a tasty and healthy take on traditional chips. For lunch or dinner, beat the cold by pureeing butternut squash, cauliflower or broccoli for a warm soup. Or, make a mason jar salad that tastes as good as it looks, with this recipe: Mason Jar Salad Layer each ingredient in a mason

The goal for this year is to enhance our ability to do just that. Art Auction 2014: The Art of the Heist Saturday, February 8 6:00-10:00 p.m. Tickets: $125-$150 On Saturday, February 8, Laguna Art Museum presents its annual art auction fundraiser. Over 100 artists are featured in the year’s event, with big-name artists like Shepard Fairey and Peter Alexander participating for the first time. In addition to contemporary artists, the line-up features historically-significant California artists like George Hurrell, Ilya Bolotowsky, and Emerson Woelffer. Guests who have visited the museum in the past year will be able to snag works by recently exhibited artists Adam Silverman, Libby Black, and Macha Suzuki. Other highlights include works by Tony DeLap (valued at $15,000), Theodore Svenningsen (valued at $20,000), and Laddie John Dill (valued at $35,000). Works donated by artists, galleries, and private collectors are sold at the event in a silent and live auction, with proceeds benefiting the museum, a non-profit organization. Works range in value from $300 to $35,000, and bidding starts at 50% of the value. Guests will have the opportunity to support the museum’s education and exhibition programs by adding works by prestigious California artists to their collections. Taking inspiration from the stylish 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair, Art Auction 2014: The Art of the Heist will feature glamorous 1960s-inspired décor and the chance to “heist” original works of art by over 100 of California’s most sought after artists. The works will be sold during an exciting silent auction as well as a fast-paced live auction led by Christie’s auctioneer Charlie Adamski. In addition to art, guests will enjoy a sampling of exquisite cuisine from local noteworthy restaurants Wine Gallery, Side Door, Sabatino’s, Vin Goat, Sapphire Laguna, and Simply Sweet Cakery; vintage-inspired cocktails by Tito’s Handmade Vodka and beer from Noble Ale Works; gorgeous floral design by Laguna Nursery; live DJ entertainment provided by The Observatory; and live art performances by John Park and Mimi Yoon. Attendees will have the chance to mingle with featured artists, fellow collectors, and the museum’s curators and executive director. Tickets are $125 for museum members at the Friend level and higher, and $150 for all others. Laguna Art Museum will be open with free admission for patrons to preview the works featured in Art Auction 2014: The Art of the Heist from Monday, February 3 through Saturday, February 8. On Sunday, Page 14

February 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the museum will host a public sale during which any unsold works will be available for purchase at 50% of the stated value. Live! at the Museum: Helix Collective Thursday, February 13 7:00-8:00 p.m. Free admission Live! at the Museum is an ongoing series of early-evening concerts in the museum’s galleries presented by Laguna Beach Live! that take place the second Thursday of each month. In February, the Los Angeles-based Helix Collective performs a highenergy, out-of-the-box mix of world, classical, and rock ‘n’ roll music. At home in nightclubs and on the concert stage, the ensemble “has a little something for everyone: those who like their classics straight up, with a contemporary edge to it, or with populist appeal” (Audiophile Audition). Called “accurate and energetic” by Fanfare magazine and praised for its “beyond-the-ordinary programming,” Helix Collective includes flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, cello, piano, and percussion. The group works closely with composers to create new music that is fun, fascinating, and instantly loveable. Ensemble composer Phil Popham writes music that “any audience would love to hear” (American Record Guide). Kids’ Art Studio Sunday, February 16 2:00-4:00 p.m. Free for museum members, free for non-members with museum admission Museum admission is always free for children 12 years of age and under. Reservations are not required. Children under 6 years must be accompanied by an adult. Kids’ Art Studio is a new handson art-making program offered by Laguna Art Museum beginning in January. It takes place on a drop-in basis on the third Sunday of every month between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. Children and their families get to create a piece of art, from start to finish, inspired by one of the exhibitions on view in the museum. Art projects are designed for all ages and are presented by members of the Laguna Art Museum Arts Council. ($5 & $7) Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace, a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. She is passionate and tough, a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge–and in love with her long-term boyfriend and coworker, Mason. Grace and Mason struggle to help Marcus, an intense, quiet kid who is about to turn 18, cope with the difficulty of having to leave the facility. But Grace’s own difficult past, added to the surprising future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper by a new arrival, Jayden, a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom she has a charged connection. Laguna Beach Film Society screenings now take place at Laguna Art Museum. Volunteers Needed to count bald eagles

Volunteers are needed to help count bald eagles for the annual winter bald eagle counts in and near the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains! Come join us for the fun and excitement in seeing one of our beautiful national birds! During the January count, fourteen eagles were seen, including 5 at Big Bear Lake, 3 at Lake Arrowhead, 2 at Silverwood Lake, 2 at Lake Hemet, 1 at Lake Gregory, and 1 at Lake Perris. These counts have been conducted since 1978. Concurrent Bald Eagle counts are held at Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Silverwood, Lake Perris, and Lake Hemet. Volunteers are stationed at vantage points around the lakes, where they watch for bald eagles during a 1-hour period on the count mornings. Volunteers record their observations on maps and data sheets. This is a wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of our breath-taking national symbol. Brief orientations are conducted prior to the count so volunteers know where to go and what to do. The remaining bald eagle counts for this winter are scheduled for the following Saturday mornings: February 8 and March 8. No experience is needed. Signing up ahead of time is unnecessary – just show up at the designated time and location, dress warmly, bring binoculars and a watch. • Big Bear Lake area volunteers

will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Forest Service’s Big Bear Discovery Center on North Shore Drive for orientation. Contact Drew Farr (dpfarr@fs.fed. us or 909-382-2816) for more information. Please call 909-3822832 for cancellation due to winter weather conditions – an outgoing message will be left by 6:30 am on the morning of the count if it has to be cancelled. Contact the Discovery Center (909-382-2790) for information about Eagle Celebrations. • Lake Arrowhead/Lake Gregory volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Skyforest Ranger Station for orientation. Contact Drew Farr (dpfarr or 909-382-2816) for more information. “There’s big news about new modern methods of crown replacement,” says local dentist Michael Te s s i e r . Dr. Michael Tessier “Crowns restore a tooth to its original size, shape, and function. Crowns are used to replace very large fillings, or broken teeth. They’re made out of stainless steel or gold, or porcelain bonded to metal or, today, just porcelain, particularly in the front. They can be as short-lived as five years, or last as long as thirty. They need to be replaced both because decay eventually develops at the edges and works its way up and under the crown where it can’t be seen, even on x-ray, and because the porcelain fractures off the metal substrate to which the porcelain is baked at about 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. The decay results from temperature changes in the mouth such as a lunch of hot soup with iced tea, or the wet, acidic environment in which the crowned tooth finds itself.

Porcelain fractures result from the brittleness of the porcelain and the weak bond between the porcelain and the metal underneath, being pitted against some peoples surprisingly powerful chewing forces. New state-of-the-art crowns we use today contain no metal, and the porcelain is reinforced with glass fibers to increase its tensile strength. These new crowns are far superior in many ways to what was used in the past, not the least of which is their appearance. Another big difference with modern vs. older technology is that today, crowns are bonded onto teeth with a plastic bonding material, as opposed to cemented, which cement was water soluble- that’s why they re-decay at the edges. If you have any questions about old crowns or crown replacement, or any other aspects of today’s dental technology, please don’t hesitate to call my office at 949-459-7212. Key tax law changes that could impact your return The majority of this year’s key tax law changes were the result of two acts - the Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as-Obamacare, and the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. The easiest way-to navigate all the tax law changes-and determine if you qualify for hundreds of tax benefits, is to use an-online or mobile tax preparation solution. The programs ask easy questions, covering allavailable-credits and deductions to help minimize your tax liability and maximize your refund. Leading solutions such as-TaxACT also provide guidance for the implications of the Affordable Care Act on your taxes and health insurance situation. If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is under $200,000 ($250,000 if filing jointly), you may benefit from several tax breaks that have been extended or made permanent. * The standard deduction for married taxpayers filing jointly is now permanently increased and expands the 15 percent tax bracket. * The child tax credit is $1,000 for each child under age 17 on Dec. 31. The amount decreases at higher income levels. A portion of the credit also remains refundable through 2017. In addition, the maximum amount of expenses for the Child and Dependent Care Credit has been made permanent at $3,000 for

one child and $6,000 for two or more children. * The American Opportunity Credit,-tuition deduction, student loan interest deduction, and-$2,000 annual contribution limit to Coverdell Education Savings Accounts are still available for 2013. * Elementary and secondary educators can again deduct up to $250 in related job expenses, even if you don’t itemize deductions. Unlike most employee expenses, educator expenses are not reduced by 2 percent of your adjusted gross income. * If you pay mortgage insurance premiums, also known as private mortgage insurance (PMI), you may be able to deduct premiums as mortgage interest. * The Alternative Minimum Tax was created to ensure wealthy taxpayers receiving large tax benefits pay some tax. It will now be adjusted for inflation each year so fewer taxpayers are subject to the tax. The exemption amount rises in 2013 to $51,900 ($80,800 for married couples filing jointly). For married individuals filing separately, the exemption is $40,400. * You may qualify for a credit equal to up to $12,970 of your adoption expenses including fees, court costs, attorney fees, traveling expense and other expenses directly related to and for the principal purpose of the legal adoption of an eligible child. If your

employer provides adoption benefits, you may also be able to exclude up to the same amount from your income. Both a credit and exclusion may be claimed for the same adoption, but not for the same expense. * For 2013, you can still deduct state and local sales taxes. You can take this deduction or a deduction for state income tax but not both. * Qualified dividends will be taxed at preferential capital gains rates rather than those used for ordinary income. * If your MAGI-is more than $200,000 ($250,000 if filing jointly), you may pay an additional Medicare surtax on earned income, as well as higher taxes on net investment income, long-term capital gains and qualified dividends. The amount of your personal exemptions and

itemized deductions is also less starting this year. The marginal income tax rate for incomes above $400,000 ($450,000 if filing jointly) also increases from 35 percent to 39.6 percent for 2013. * One change affecting taxpayers of all income levels is the increased floor for deducting medical expenses. Taxpayers under the age of 65 can now only deduct unreimbursed medical and dental expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI). The floor remains at 7.5 percent if you’re 65 or older. Learn more about these tax law changes in Publication 17 at www.irs. gov-or visit www.taxact.com/taxinfo. To file your simple or complicated federal taxes free with-TaxACT-Free Edition, go to-www.taxact.com.

Spruce up your home in the new year Making a New Year’s resolution is common, and many people set goals for ways to improve themselves. If you have set a goal to lose weight, learn a new skill or get promoted, congratulations. But while you are striving to attain your personal goal, have you ever thought of setting a goal to refresh your home in a way that will have your friends talking? Setting a home improvement goal is more common than you may think and you can make a dramatic improvement to your home with a complete remodel. You can take on several smaller projects - any time of the year - that will leave you loving your home all year long. Here are a few ideas to get you going. * A fresh coat of paint. Nothing

reinvents a room like a fresh coat of paint. Yet many people put off painting a room because they can’t afford professional painters and they don’t have time to do the job themselves. But you can achieve that professional quality finish at a fraction of the time and cost by visiting RentalHQ.com and renting your own paint sprayer. Use your sprayer to add a neutral color, which provides visual appeal and works with most furniture patterns, leaving you plenty of decorating options. * Change hardware. Faucets and cabinet hardware can quickly date a room. Replacing hardware can add beauty to your kitchen without adding a lot of extra cost. Be sure to find knobs and pulls that are the same size as the existing ones so you don’t have to re-drill the cabinets. Do this for any furniture and in any room for an instant decor face-lift. * Replace old tile. Outdated tile can make a bathroom look old and dull. Replacing it with new tile that is in style will give the space a rich, modern look. Tiling is a DIY project that anyone can tackle with the right tools. Rent the necessary items like a tile stripper, a tile saw and a mortar mixer to keep your costs down. * Update curtains and blinds.

Textiles play a major role in the overall decorating scheme of a room. New window treatments offer an inexpensive way to introduce bold color and patterns for an instant refresh. Pair your new curtains with decorative throw pillows for a striking impact to the living room. * Recreate your flooring. If your carpet doesn’t need to be replaced but it could use a little refreshing, cleaning your carpets will do the trick. If you can’t afford to hire professional carpet cleaners or you feel like taking on the project yourself, renting

a carpet cleaner can give your carpets the professional look you’ve been dreaming of. And if you have hardwood floors that need to be refurbished, renting a floor sander is an excellent first step for this project. Home improvement projects do not have to include a complete overhaul to provide a new look. These smaller projects will dramatically improve your home all year long. To learn more about the tools you can rent for your next project and to see more ways those tools can help you, visit rentalhq.com.

Diesel rides in demand for 2014 Not that long ago, finding a diesel car or truck - a truck with fewer than 18 wheels, anyway - on an American highway was about as rare as an icy road in July. Not so today. The era of dirty, smelly and noisy diesel vehicles has gone the way of the 8-track tape player, clearing a path for high-profile and increasingly popular diesel sedans, SUVs and pickup trucks. Fueling great mileage One of the main advantages of diesel vehicles is their excellent fuel economy. Diesel fuel costs about 7 percent more than gasoline at the pump but it can take a car or truck much further down the road. On average, a vehicle running on diesel fuel gains 30 to 35 percent in fuel efficiency over a vehicle running on traditional gasoline. Diesel fuel has a greater amount of energy per gallon than gasoline, says Neil Hoff of CHS, a company that produces diesel fuel for fleet operations across the country. This is why a diesel car can average closer to 50 miles per gallon on the highway. Similar to traditional gasoline, consumers can upgrade at the pump to a premium diesel for added performance. “Using a premium diesel fuel, such as Cenex Roadmaster

premium diesel, can increase fuel efficiency and power by another 5 percent,” says Hoff. “The premium diesel packages are also ultra-low sulfur, which is cleaner-burning than a standard diesel. Drivers appreciate the combination of added power with fewer emissions.” Responding to demand Though long popular in Europe, diesel vehicles have not yet enjoyed widespread popularity in the United States. However, American automakers are taking a cue from consumers who desire an alternative to gasoline-fueled cars. For example, Chevrolet has introduced its 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, a compact car that boasts 46 mpg on the highway; and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel claims to drive up to 730 miles on one tank of gas. Other companies, including Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all offer diesel varieties that carmakers hope consumers will warm to. Trucks are not left out of the equation, with diesel pickups available from Chevrolet/GMC, Ford and Ram. Laura Anderson of Minneapolis has owned a diesel-powered Volkswagen Passat for more than a year. “I

do a lot of highway driving,” says Anderson, “so the great fuel economy and the power of the diesel engine are what sold me on giving diesel a try. I’m very glad I made that decision. I love my car, and I love saving so much money on gas.” Powered by technology Diesel engines, too, have undergone great advances, such as high-pressure injection technologies that promote engine health and longevity. “Diesel engines have come

a long way in the past decade and are certainly more marketable than they used to be,” says Hoff. “Today’s diesel engines are quieter and smoother running than ever. When you pair that with great fuel economy and reduced sulfur levels, for consumers, that’s a combination that’s hard to beat.” For more information on diesel fuels, and to find out how you can nominate someone you know for free fuel, visit www.TanksofThanks.com.

SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available to California Small Businesses Small, nonfarm businesses in 35 California counties and neighboring counties in Arizona and Nevada are now eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). “These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by the drought that began on January 1, 2014, in the following primary counties,” announced Tanya N. Garfield, Acting Director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations CenterWest. Primary California counties: Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, Tulare, Tuolumne and Ventura; Neighboring California counties: Orange, Placer, Riverside, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sutter and Yolo; Neighboring Arizona counties: La Paz and Mohave; Neighboring Nevada counties: Clark, Douglas, Esmeralda, Lyon, Mineral and Nye. “SBA eligibility covers both the

economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers that have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by the disaster,” Garfield said. Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred. “Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property

damage. These loans have an interest rate of 4% for businesses and 2.625% for private, nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years, and are available to small businesses and most private, nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said. By law, SBA makes EIDLs available when the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster. Secretary Tom Vilsack declared this disaster on January 15, 2014. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency (FSA) about the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration. However, in drought disasters nurseries are eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure Web site at https:// disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Disaster loan information and application forms are also available from SBA’s Customer Service Center by calling (800) 659-2955 or e-mailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing may call (800) 877-8339. For more information about SBA’s disaster assistance programs, visit http://www.sba.gov/disaster. The deadline to apply for these loans is September 15, 2014.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
