By Rep. Mimi Walters Serving the nearly 800,000 residents of California’s 45th Congressional District is an incredible honor and a responsibility that I take seriously every day. While people often associate the work of Congress with policy debates and votes in our nation’s capital, one of my fundamental duties is to provide assistance to those that I represent. I often hear from constituents about the roadblocks that they face when dealing with government agencies, especially the Social Security Administration (SSA), Medicare, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Whether you are a Veteran unable to get answers about your pending VA claims, a senior who has not received your retirement or disability benefits in a timely manner, or someone else who just cannot get your issue addressed, my staff is ready to help cut through the red tape and find you the answers you deserve. The federal government can be difficult to navigate, but my office is here to help you.

For those interested in serving our nation, I have the distinct privilege of nominating talented high school students each year to attend one of
the U.S. service academies, such as the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. For students who are interested in learning more about Congress or pursuing careers in government, both my Irvine and Washington, D.C. offices offer educational internships that will give you the experience and confidence that you need to make decisions about your future. We also sponsor a number of local competitions each year that encourage high school students to be creative and innovative. Right now, the 2017 Congressional High School Art Competition is underway at my office, and we’re accepting
submissions through April 25th. These are just some of the ways that I can serve you. Top fashion tips for spring and summer 2017
Spring is here - time to start planning your warm-weather wardrobe updates. To help you stay on top of the trends for spring 2017, the experts have plenty of advice to share. Lynne Riding, who is the fashion coordinator at The Art Institute of Charleston, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, and Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds, who has the same role at The Art Institute of AtlantaDecatur, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta, offer some pointers. Q: What are the top five trends for spring 2017? A: “Look for clean, simple lines,” says Riding. “You’ll also see pleats, sheers and lace, and prints - both floral and graphic.” Hammonds agrees that pleats, especially knife pleats, will be big this spring. “Graphic prints are a major trend, using written words embroidered or printed across ready-to-wear garments,” he adds. “We’ll also see accessories with metallic touches in gold and bronze this year.” Q: What are this spring’s top colors? A: Both experts agree that lilac and other pastels are the most important color story for spring. Greens, especially mint green, are also big. “Muted and sophisticated tones predominate, although brights are also seen, particularly when paired with metallic touches,” Hammonds Page 2
says. Q: What one piece should everyone consider adding to her wardrobe to be on trend for spring? A: “A poplin dress shirt in white, lilac or mint green is a great spring/summer addition,” says Riding. “It could either be a long wrap shirt without buttons or a long shirt worn on the hips with a belt.” Hammonds recommends adding a modern accessory, such as a metallic bag or clutch, statement eye frames, or even a metallic shoe that can go from day to night. Some other ideas to give your wardrobe the fashion edge this spring? Consider a longer skirt (midcalf or upper ankle length), wearing a classic shirt untucked with the bottom several buttons undone, or an accessory with fringe. And be sure to hang on to fashions with color blocking. Riding says this trend is continuing to be popular. Whatever you do, Hammonds advises, dare to be edgy and always be true to yourself and your personal style. Riding adds, “A trend only works if it works for you. Does it fit your style, your lifestyle, what’s flattering? For instance, if lilac is not your color, don’t add a lilac dress to your wardrobe. Instead, choose a flower print that includes lilac or wear a print skirt with lilac tones along with a crisp white shirt.”

Santa Margarita High School Ice Hockey Team Captures State Title Photo by Shannon Roby On Sunday, March 5, the Santa Margarita Catholic High School Ice Hockey team captured the California State High School Championship with a 5-2 win over the Orange Lutheran Lancers at Lakewood Ice in Lakewood, California. After defeating JSerra High School of San Juan Capistrano and Bellarmine High School of San Jose, Santa Margarita advanced to the championship game against the same Orange Lutheran team that went undefeated for most of the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League regular season before losing to Santa Margarita in the final regular season game. Santa Margarita’s championship game victory gave them their third California State Championship. Santa Margarita previously claimed state championships in 2013 and 2014. The team will now compete for their second national championship later this month at the 2017 USA Hockey High School National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Ringwald Pacific Symphony’s 2017 American Composers Festival celebrates Peter Boyer’s Grammy nominated production ‘Ellis Island: The Dream of America’ and John Adams’ ‘The Dharma at Big Sur’ in evening performances April 6-8 and matinee on April 9, at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. ‘Ellis Island:The Dream of America’ is an award winning multi-media production that includes historical photography accompanied by the original Peter Boyer orchestral composition. The presentation follows the experience of seven immigrants who entered America through Ellis Island from 1910-1940, each in quest of a better life in a land of new opportunity. Personal narration fused with imagery and music collaborate to create an edifying experience that may inspire us now. The concerto ‘The Dharma at Big Sur’ American composed by John Adams was originally presented in 2003 for the opening of the new Disney Hall in Los Angeles. In celebration of John Adams’ 70th birthday, guest artist Tracy Silverman performs on a six string electric violin with Pacific Symphony. In this unique musical composition,
John Adams explores the Buddhist and Hindu concept of ‘dharma’ or ‘cosmic law and order’ in the context of Big Sur, a place in Northern California famous for spiritual exploration and experimentation. Pacific Symphony’s presentation of ‘Ellis Island: The Dream of America’ will be broadcast on national television as part of the 2017-218 PBS series, ‘Great Performances.’ This is the first time Pacific Symphony has participated in a national broadcast

Prepping tips for spring outdoor projects Soon, winter will be winding down and homeowners will start planning and prepping for - a variety of outdoor projects for spring. From cleaning, repairing or replacing decks, to creating raised beds for veggies and flowers, now is the time to start gearing up for those spring projects. Cleaning up Start with spring cleaning existing structures. Take a weekend to clean decks, gazebos and pergolas of dirt, debris, mold and mildew. For structures made of naturally durable Western Red Cedar, a broom, garden sprayer and hose, plus a little bleach are all you need. Sweep winter debris such as twigs and leaves from decks, taking care to clean between planks on horizontal
surfaces. This facilitates airflow and drainage, and can help prevent a buildup of moisture when spring showers arrive. Next, use a garden sprayer to apply a-mild oxygen bleach solution to kill mold and mildew. Be sure to leave the bleach solution on the wood surface for approximately 30 minutes, and then rinse with water. Never use a pressure washer as it can damage the wood. Maintenance and repair Carefully inspect outdoor structures for wear and tear. While Western Red Cedar contains natural preservatives that make the wood durable, all outdoor structures require annual care, including those made of pressure-treated lumber or composites. Check planks, beams and boards for cracking, warping or rough spots and repair accordingly. Replace damaged wood, and be sure to examine hardware to ensure it’s working properly and free of rust. New projects If you’ve always dreamed about lounging on a lovely deck on a summer afternoon, or savoring a spring morning beneath the shade of a decorative pergola, now’s the time
to start planning the project. A great deck is the showpiece of an inspired backyard, and spring is a prime time to add one. To ensure your deck affords you the most value and enjoyment, consider using an online deck planner to help you envision your deck before you begin building. As gardening grows in popularity, you might consider adding raised planting beds to your landscaping. Raised beds not only make caring for and harvesting your garden easier no bending required - they can also function as a decorative enhancement to your outdoor environment. Simplify Fish Fridays with Sheet Pan Dinners
If you’re observing Lent, Friday fish dinners could be in your future, but that’s no reason to feel limited by what you can cook. Seafood pairs well with all sorts of flavors – from chili seasoning to lime extract – and bakes quickly on a sheet pan with minimal cleanup. Follow these simple tips from Dr. Wendy Bazilian, McCormick Health Advisor and Registered Dietitian, to get your family asking for good-foryou proteins like salmon and shrimp all year long: While lemon is a great complement to seafood, think about pairing with other citrus flavors like orange and lime. Try marinating shrimp in a mixture of lite coconut milk, lime extract, ginger and red pepper. Add colorful vegetables like zoodles or asparagus to your sheet pan to boost both seafood and vegetable servings. You don’t need a spiralizer to make zoodles because
many grocery stores offer pre-made zoodles in the produce section. Keep shrimp in your freezer to pull out for stir fries, pastas or this Coconut Lime Shrimp with Zoodles recipe. Heat oven to 375 F. In large, re-sealable plastic bag, mix together coconut milk, ginger, garlic powder, crushed red pepper and lime extract. Add shrimp; turn to coat well. Refrigerate 15-30 minutes. Remove shrimp from marinade. Discard any remaining marinade. In center of large, shallow, foil-lined baking pan, arrange shrimp in single layer. In large bowl, toss vegetable noodles and oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss to coat well. Spread noodles around shrimp in pan. Bake 10-15 minutes, or until shrimp turn pink and are cooked through and noodles are tender. Serve shrimp over vegetable noodles. Test kitchen tip: For faster prep, use 4 cups store-bought spiralized vegetable noodles instead of spiralizing them yourself. Orange Chili Sheet Pan Salmon Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 8 Nonstick cooking spray 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure Orange Extract 2 pounds salmon fillets, skin removed 1 pound asparagus, ends trimmed 1 medium red bell pepper, cut
into strips 1 package McCormick Original Chili Seasoning Mix 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar Heat oven to 375 F. Spray foillined, 13-by-9-inch baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. In small bowl, mix together oil and orange extract. Place salmon and vegetables on separate sides of baking sheet. Brush vegetables with 1 teaspoon extract mixture. Brush both sides of salmon with remaining mixture. In small bowl, mix together seasoning mix and brown sugar. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons seasoning mixture over vegetables. Sprinkle both sides of salmon evenly with remaining seasoning mixture. Bake 20 minutes, or until fish flakes easily with a fork and vegetables are tender.

The Venue Host Chef was Salvatore Giuliano from Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa, with Adam Navidi from Oceans & Earth and Future Foods Farm serving as Event Executive Chef Chair. Event Chair Kristin Martin presented Navidi with an award for his 11 years supporting the event - the only chef to do so. An event highlight was the testimony by Vanessa Gray, who thanked Lauri Burns and The Teen Project for “saving my life,” as she put it. Growing up in an abusive home, she aged out of the foster care system at 18 and was on the streets for five years before she found a home, drug treatment and a scholarship for technology school through the nonprofit. Today, she is employed in marketing with a management company. “I now know my purpose in life,” she said. Vocational Visions’ programs, services and personalized support develops the talents of adults with disabilities by creating pathways to employment, life-long learning and social inclusion. The best lawn games for players of all ages As long as the sun is shining, it’s time to get outside and enjoy that beautiful lawn you’ve been working so hard to maintain throughout the year. Barbecues and picnics are always a good excuse to get family and friends together but after you’ve finished eating you don’t want the kids (or the adults) wandering back inside to waste a glorious day staring at a television or a computer screen. It’s time for some good old-fashioned backyard fun: lawn games. When you think of playing games on the lawn, children’s classics like tag and capture the flag might be the first activities that spring to mind but the possibilities are truly endless. Below are some of the top lawn games that are fun for all ages and can easily be adapted to fit a wide range of skill levels. Badminton: Official badminton matches are played indoors, but who wants to hang out in a hot gym on a beautiful day? You can pick up a decent-quality outdoor badminton set at any sporting goods store. Like tennis, you can play singles or doubles and for children or beginners, you can start without the net. Just hitting the shuttlecock back and forth is great for improving eye-hand coordination and fitness. Croquet: Croquet is one of the oldest and most widely-played backyard games in the world. There are many variations, but all
involve using a mallet to hit a ball through a series of hoops or wickets, embedded in the grass. You can make the course - and the rules - as simple or as complex as you want and you can play as individuals or teams. Horseshoes: Two individuals (or two teams of two) take turns tossing four horseshoes at two stakes set in the ground. Backyard players can set their own rules, of course, but generally you score points either for “ringers” or for landing your horseshoe closer to the stake than your opponent’s. Other tossing games include ladder toss, cornhole, washer pitching and many variations on the ring toss theme. Choose your favorite or make up your own new game. Lawn bowls: Even if your lawn isn’t a perfectly level and immaculately manicured bowling green, you can still enjoy a good game of lawn bowls. The objective is to roll balls - they’re biased, so they follow a curved path - as close as possible to a smaller ball, called the “jack.” As a member of the boules family of sports, lawn bowling shares a common ancestry with bocce, petanque and other games in which a heavy ball is thrown or rolled toward a smaller target ball. Miniature golf: If you don’t have a miniature golf course in town, you can create your own. Use
plastic cups as targets and let your imagination run wild in creating challenging obstacles. No putters available? Try disc golf instead: Create a series of targets that you throw a flying disc at and whoever completes the course with the fewest number of attempts wins. Water fights: They may not be a recognized sport but no list of outdoor activities would be complete without a mention of water fights. Whether you use water balloons, squirt guns or high-powered water blasters, there’s no better way to cool off - and you can even claim you’re watering the lawn while you’re at it. If your group is a bit less competitively inclined, you can bring out the boomerangs, frisbee, hula hoops, Hacky Sacks, bubble-
blowing equipment, kites and remote controlled airplanes (but keep those last two apart). Or, of course, you can just play catch - a game that never goes out of style. The important thing is that you are making the most of your lawn. “A natural grass lawn creates the perfect setting for a whole host of outdoor activities for the entire family,” says Bryan Ostlund, executive director of Grass Seed USA, a coalition of American grass seed farmers and turf specialists. “A healthy lawn can stand up to a surprising amount of traffic and can easily be spruced back up in the fall with some additional grass seed. If you’re lucky enough to have a grass lawn, use it! Spending time outdoors is good for both mind and body.”
Essential tools for parents to navigate teen health issues Parents of teenagers face a delicate balancing act between taking care of their teens and allowing them freedom to make their own decisions. Teens themselves seem to understand the importance of good health; in a survey by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) two out of three surveyed teens said they worry a lot or a great deal about staying healthy. However, when it comes to handling health issues, parents need to remain in the driver’s seat. “Parents need to know that it’s going to be okay,” says internationally recognized author and parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba, Ed.D. “Even though the teen years are a difficult time, we can’t let the kids take the lead, especially with their health. Now more than ever parents must be vigilant and involved. There are actually some simple ways to help guide them - and not try to control them.”While teens face many healthrelated issues, experts recommend that parents focus on three key teen health issues and consider some simple approaches to instill good habits solutions: 1. Oral Health Parents and teens both know that brushing and flossing are essential for good oral health. But they may be unaware that crooked teeth (also called malocclusion), if left untreated, can lead to periodontal disease and premature wearing of Page 24
the teeth. Crooked teeth can put abnormal stress on teeth and jaws and cause difficulty with effectively biting, chewing and speaking. While straight, attractive teeth can certainly boost a teen’s mental health and self esteem, teeth straightening is clearly much more than just a cosmetic issue. Doctors polled in the NFID study reported stress-related conditions were among the topics teens and parents were most likely to bring up at their annual checkups.

In addition to short-term physical symptoms like increased heart rate and breathing, headache, neck stiffness and pain, and stomach upset, stress can create long-term problems, too. Over time, stress can affect the immune system, heart, blood pressure, lungs, reproductive organs and stomach. In teens, it can make existing acne even worse. One simple solution is more exercise. Getting off the couch or away from the computer screen and engaging in physical activity is a great stress buster. Exercise releases tension and excess energy, and provides physical and cosmetic benefits, too. 3. Diet and weight More than a third of American children and teens are obese or overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health experts agree, however, that weight is only one reason to emphasize a healthy diet for teens. Good nutrition is just as important for teens as it is for young children, since teenagers’ bodies go through stressful development and mentally they are creating eating habits that can follow them throughout life. The single most important way parents can teach teens about health, diet and lifestyle habits is to model those habits themselves, experts agree. Involve teens in meal-planning and preparation, demonstrating good nutrition and healthful choices.
Encourage physical activity by engaging the entire family in fun, healthful exercise such as cycling, hiking or playing sports together. Just talking about weight, diet and appearance is not only not enough, it can actually be detrimental to teens’ health. A study by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis found that when parents focus on weight, size and appearance when talking to teens, they may actually increase a teen’s risk of engaging in unhealthy weight-control measures - such as fad diets or binge eating. Even though they’re approaching adulthood, teens still need parental guidance and support when it comes to health, but not interference. The NFID study found that 60 percent of teens could come up with at least one reason to ditch their annual checkup, with a third thinking they only need to see a doctor when sick. But of those who did get a checkup, 84 percent of doctors surveyed said exams went better when parents took a supportive stance outside the exam room.

Know how to keep young athletes playing safe and strong
Playing sports is great for kids. It teaches them the importance of teamwork, helps them stay physically active and creates positive habits that last a lifetime. An injury, however, can sideline young athletes for the season - or longer. A recent study by Safe Kids Worldwide identified measures that athletes, coaches and parents can take to prevent serious injuries so kids can stay in the game. A sports injury sends a young athlete to the emergency room every 25 seconds in the U.S., according to the report “Game Changers.” Made possible with support from Johnson & Johnson, the report takes an in-depth look at data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) to explore the types of injuries sidelining young athletes. “We uncovered some surprising and disturbing data about how often our kids are being injured playing sports,” says Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “But we also found some inspiring stories from people and programs that are making a marked difference and helping kids learn how to play smart, strong and safe.”
Whether cleaning up after a busy weekend or hosting company, having a few quick kitchen shortcuts on hand is a great way to be prepared for whatever life brings. Many of the best shortcuts come from switching things up and using typical kitchen items in not-so-typical ways. Aside from being the de facto mess cleaner, paper towels are among the most versatile kitchen tools you can have on hand. They can prolong the life of produce, be used to prep beverages and clean up spills. In fact, paper towels have so many uses, they may render some kitchen “staples” unnecessary. A few of the most eye-opening findings of the report were: * The most common types of injuries in 2012 were strains or sprains (33 percent), fractures (18 percent), contusions and abrasions (16 percent), and concussions (12 percent). * The most commonly injured body parts were ankle (15 percent), head (14 percent), finger (12 percent), knee (9 percent) and face (7 percent). * While it may not be surprising that the sport with the highest concussion rate is football, wrestling and ice hockey have the second and third highest concussion rates, respectively. * In sports played by both boys and girls, female athletes were more likely to report concussions than boys. Safe Kids recommends communities, coaches, parents and athletes adopt four key strategies to help reduce sports-related injuries: * Get educated and then share your knowledge. Many parents and young athletes dealing with a sports injury say they wish they had known sooner about sports injury prevention resources. Anyone interested in staying at the top of their game can attend a Safe Kids sports clinic or go
to www.safekids.org to learn more. * Teach children how to prevent injury, including staying hydrated, warming up with exercises and stretching, protecting injury-prone areas like pitching arms and knees, and getting plenty of rest between games and throughout the year. * Make sure kids know not to suffer in silence. Injured athletes may not report how they’re feeling because they’re worried they will let down their team, coach or parents if they ask to sit out a game or in practice. In reality, speaking up about an injury can help ensure the child suffers no serious, long-term effects - and can return to
play sooner. * Half of coaches who responded to a 2012 Safe Kids survey admitted they’d been pressured by a parent or athlete to keep an injured child in the game. Support coaches when they make injury-prevention decisions that protect the wellbeing of the athlete. “Most states have laws to protect young athletes from injuries or repeat injuries,” Carr says, “but parents and coaches are the front line of protection for our kids. Working together, we can keep our kids active, healthy and safe so they can enjoy the sports they love for a lifetime.”
