Kentucky Derby 2013 | Seeing celebrities is an old Derby Day tradition John Asher has seen lots of celebrities at the Kentucky Derby over the past 30 years, but one of the two biggest show-stoppers was actor Jack Nicholson in 1998. “Crowds halted and parted like the Red Sea wherever he went that day,” Asher, vice president of racing communications at Churchill Downs, said. The other was Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in 2007. “I think all members of our racetrack team felt that Derby Day was a bit more special than most,” he said. “And that’s saying something.” But even before the movie star and the queen’s visit, a who’s who of some of the world’s most famous faces has attended the Kentucky Derby. From Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and both George Bushes — to Judy Garland, Babe Ruth and John Wayne — here’s a look back at some of the biggest stars who have been spotted at Churchill on Derby Day. • J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI, baseball legend Babe Ruth and boxer Jack Dempsey were both guests at the 1937 Kentucky Derby. • Pictured wearing flowers in her blond hair, a dark dress and chic black gloves, “Peyton Place” beauty Lana Turner was all smiles at the 1941 Run for the Roses, which she attended with legendary singer Tony Martin. • “The Wizard of Oz’s” Judy Garland was a guest in 1953. The day before the race, she told a Courier-Journal reporter she hadn’t decided what she was wearing, saying, “By golly, I haven’t thought much about that. If it is a dull, rather cool day, I’ll wear a suit. If it’s nice and bright, I’ll wear a light dress.” • Just a few months into his first year as president of the United States, Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, came to the Kentucky Derby in 1969. The couple hung out at Churchill Downs with another famous duo — Ronald and Nancy Reagan. • In 1976, comedian Bob Hope (who came multiple times) and movie star John Wayne were among the VIPs. Wayne was also the Pegasus Parade grand marshal that year. • Former President Gerald Ford was a guest in 1987. • A-lister Dennis Hopper attended Derby multiple times in the 1990s and 2000s. The “Easy Rider” and “Speed” star was spotted enjoying a cigar on the fifth floor of the Skye Terrace in 2004, his reported last Derby visit. Movie star Morgan Freeman was spotted in Churchill’s Skye Terrace and Eclipse Dining Room at the 1991 Derby.

• In 1991, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf was the Pegasus Parade grand marshal. Louisville was one of the famed general’s first stops after he returned home from the Persian Gulf War. On Derby Day, cheers could be heard erupting several times when Schwarzkopf was spotted on the deck of the fourth-floor Stakes Room. • In his signature black shades, actor Jack Nicholson was on hand betting the ponies at the 1998 Run for the Roses. That same year “The Godfather” legend Robert Duvall and “Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone were also on hand. • Then-Gov. George W. Bush, a year before he would become president, was a big hit at the Kentucky Derby in 2000. He was even snapped by a photographer in the Paddock giving a Louisville woman a kiss on the hand before presenting a trophy to the winner of one of the day’s races. His date? Former President George H.W. Bush. • In 2003, Academy Award-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver came to Churchill Downs. She told reporters she was putting her money on Atswhatimtalknbout, part-owned by her famous movie director friend, Steven Spielberg. • Chubby Checker brought the “Twist” to the Derby City in 2004 when he was the grand marshal of the Pegasus Parade. • Because of one VIP guest of the Barnstable Brown Gala, Louisville native Larry Birkhead would later find himself thrust into the national limelight. It was at the 2004 bash that he first came face to face with Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith.

• Queen Elizabeth made history when she came to the 2007 Kentucky Derby as the first sitting British monarch to attend. Her Derby Day outfit? A lime green suit and matching hat with a hot-pink bow, and her trademark white gloves, of course. • He might be one of the biggest names in late-night TV, but in 2007, Jimmy Fallon knew Louisville was the place to be on the first Saturday in May. After partying at the Barnstable Brown Gala, the “Saturday Night Live” alum kept the good times going when he hung out with some University of Louisville Sigma Chi fraternity brothers. • KISS legend Gene Simmons caused a media frenzy when he came to the Barnstable Brown Gala and Kentucky Derby in 2007 with his wife, Shannon Tweed, and her sister, Tracy. The trio’s every move at the party and racetrack wase captured by the film crew from their A&E reality show, “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.”

• International bombshell Raquel Welch was a guest of the Barnstable Brown Gala in 2007. • Years before Hugh Hefner tied the knot for the third time, the Playboy legend and former girlfriends Holly Madison, Kendra Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt were guests of the Barnstable Brown Gala in 2008. Cameras from their hit E! show, “The Girls Next Door,” captured their Louisville trip. • The “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin did Derby in 2009. • Domestic diva Martha Stewart said she had “a real Derby experience” when she attended for the first time in the 2011 as guests of former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane and his wife, Kathy. She said the backside of Churchill Downs and a barbecue lunch at the western Louisville home of the sister of the local police officer who was escorting her around town were among the highlights of her trip.

Pageant of the Masters Director Greenlights “The Big Picture” Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Every summer in Laguna Beach, California, audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. A live narrator is a guide through the story of each living picture accompanied by a full orchestra. In 2013, the Pageant of the Masters celebrates its 80th anniversary with the theme “The Big Picture” -adding a cinematic spin to its world-class presentation with classic masterpieces that inspired legendary filmmakers. Long before the curtain fell on last summer’s enormously popular production, The Genius, Diane Challis Davy, director of the Pageant of the Masters, was busily formulating her ideas for 2013’s celebration of art in “living pictures” – tableaux vivants – titled “The Big Picture.” She’s excited that this summer will mark the 80th anniversary of living pictures being presented at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. But Challis Davy is also planning a tribute to the modern art of motion pictures and the ways in which the masterpieces of art history have inspired and informed the movies. When asked where she found her inspiration for the 2013 theme, Challis Davy laughed and replied, “In the bathtub!” She then went on to explain this was a reference to Busby Berkeley, the legendary Hollywood director famous for his extravagant and brilliantly-choreographed musiPage 6

cal numbers in the 1930s. Berkeley, it seems, once told a reporter that his best ideas came to him while in the tub. Challis Davy’s playful comment is offset by the seriousness of her continuing devotion to the daunting logistics of putting on the Pageant. With its two casts of hundreds of volunteers, orchestra, narrator and crew of backstage artists and technicians, the Pageant of the Masters is every bit as complex as a big-budget movie shoot, with the biggest difference being that a movie only has to get a shot right once, while the Pageant hits the stage live every night for nearly two months! Challis Davy is quick to point out that masterpieces are once again included in the “coming attractions” of the 2013 Pageant. “We’ll have Vermeer, Gainsborough, Michelangelo, Gerome, Seurat, Rodin, Norman Rockwell. Designers for both stage and screen look to paintings and sculpture for historical information and inspiration. I thought it would be a new twist for the Pageant to take a look back at the work of the Masters that inspired great works of cinema.” As examples, THE BIG PICTURE will showcase how the genius of Michelangelo found expression in “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” how Thomas Gainsborough’s portraits influenced Stanley Kubrick, and how the works of Jean-Leon Gerome can be seen in films by directors like David Lean and Ridley Scott. And “the Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock, will also merit special attention. But, Challis Davy’s enthusiasm for the theme extends beyond film references. “What are movies but a series of still pictures?” she mused, “The Pageant is a series of still (but living) pictures. That seemed like an interesting connection to consider.” Longtime Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling concurred. “The Pageant’s combination of art and theater alters the way we look at art. In a way tableaux vivants were the original ‘freeze frames.’ And looking at masterpieces through the viewfinder of motion pictures provides fascinating food for thought.”

The Coto de Caza News

When asked if there were any selections for the upcoming show that she’d always wanted to produce, Challis Davy cited the chance to incorporate memorable music from the movies – by Bernard Hermann, Alex North and other composers – and the chance to recreate a fresco by Michelangelo from the Sistine Chapel. On a lighter note, she said she’s looking forward to staging “a loving tribute to the Chicago Art Institute, courtesy of director John Hughes and his film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Of course, THE BIG PICTURE has a secondary focus, the 80th anniversary of “living pictures” at the Festival of Arts. That’s certainly worthy of celebration, and Challis Davy intends to revisit this remarkable history by highlighting some of the ways in which the Pageant has benefited from its connections with Hollywood celebrities. And, of course, the show will once again conclude with its traditional finale, Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” In 1936, that truly became “the big picture” that put the Pageant on the national map. Everyone associated with the production understands the Pageant

wouldn’t be possible without that spirit of volunteer dedication. As Challis Davy acknowledges, their dedication and loyalty are the remarkable engines that sustain the Pageant. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love the hard work it takes to produce a very elaborate show,” she said. “I get inspiration from the scriptwriter, staff, composers, and from the scores of enthusiastic research volunteers who come up with great suggestions!” The Pageant of the Masters will be performed nightly from Sunday, July 7 - Saturday, August 31, 2013. Tickets for The Big Picture can be purchased by calling 1-800-487-3378, or online at www.PageantoftheMasters.org. Tickets start at $15. A Pageant ticket entitles you to free unlimited admission to the Festival of Arts grounds where you can enjoy original artwork by 140 of Southern Orange County’s finest artists, art classes, musical entertainment, special art events, dining at Gina’s Alfresco and so much more. The event is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, California.

Kentucky Derby 2013 Winner Predictions Twitter Accounts to Watch Naturally, everyone wants to be able to predict which horse will win the Kentucky Derby each year. However, only a few people advertised their 2012 Kentucky Derby contenders accurately. While there is no way a single person can be relied upon for this type of advice each year, it is helpful to follow the people that are most likely to define the horses that will be the Kentucky Derby 2013 winners. Do you think you know which horse is going to win the Kentucky Derby 2013? If so, do not forget to tweet your own predictions for the race with the popular hashtag #KYDerby. Unlikely source of Kentucky Derby predictions Although it was barely covered in the press, former Thoroughbred Times editor and horse racing picks expert, Ed DeRosa, sided with Kentucky Attorney General, Jack Conway. Conway correctly predicted that I’ll Have Another would win the 2012 Derby and made the announcement on his official Kentucky.gov website. He may have just been lucky, but, along with DeRosa, @ EJXD2, Conway’s Twitter account, @ ConwayforKy, might be one to watch for 2013 Kentucky Derby picks.

Pick experts that did their job There are many websites and social media outlets that have account users promising to give the best Kentucky Derby picks. Some of these resources are major news outlets and others are amateur horse racing handicappers that have strong opinions. Interestingly, one pick expert on Twitter delivered exactly what they promised. Before the 2012 Kentucky Derby began, @trifectabox predicted I’ll Have Another would win. For this reason, add them to your 2013 Kentucky Derby picks feed to see if they strike it big again this year. Official Twitter sources of the Kentucky Derby 2013 Churchill Downs has a variety of official oddsmakers, picks experts, horse racing specialists, and handicappers. While many of them failed to predict the winner of the 2012 Kentucky Derby, their advice is always crucial to making the best bet from the current 2013 Kentucky Derby contenders list. Some important accounts to add to your twitter feed include @DerbyMedia, @ TwinSpires, @ChurchillDowns, and @ KentuckyDerby. Experts that regularly add to the previously named Twitter accounts are

@JohnAsher and Mike Battalgia. One other important official source of Kentucky Derby related information comes from the Courier-Journal’s Jennie Rees. In addition to her own acclaimed work, the @CJ_Jennie Twitter feed includes articles from important horse racing news sources like Blood Horse, Daily Racing Form, and Thoroughbred Times. Amateur Kentucky Derby contenders information sources Major news sources are careful to inform their audience about key features concerning Kentucky Derby culture. Nevertheless, if you are a horse bettor, you will also want your news from an amateur handicapper’s point of view. For all of the finer details, links, and

videos of 2013 Kentucky Derby contenders, follow the Twitter accounts for @DerbyContenders, @ChasingTheDerby, and @Racing_Post. Kentucky Derby 2013 media coverage Network media companies all fight for the chance to have exclusive rights for broadcasting the Kentucky Derby. This year, the rights go to @NBC_Sports and @NBCSN. If you are looking for opinions and coverage feedback in video form, @HRTVinsider is an excellent resource. One final media-related Twitter account that you will want in your Kentucky Derby list is for America’s Best Racing (@ABRLive) sponsored by the American Jockey Club.

Teens Pay It Forward by Teri Cooper Combine 12,000 baby wipes, 290 teenagers, 7 school libraries full of wellused books, and you have the 2013 annual youth conference for the Santa Margarita Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The youth conference theme was “Pay It Forward!” and teens (age 14–18) began preparing months ago. Each youth was asked to commit to perform 75 acts of service in 75 days in their homes, schools, and communities. They came together on April 19–21 for a culminating weekend of community service. On Saturday morning, the youth collected over 5,000 cans of food in conjunction with Families Forward, a local food bank. That afternoon, armed with baby wipes and paper towels, they spent two and a half hours cleaning hardcover library books at seven different Saddleback Valley Unified School

District (SVUSD) schools: RSM Intermediate, Robinson Ranch, Trabuco Mesa, Cello Vista, Melinda Heights, Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills Elementary. “It was an outstanding show of support for the local schools and libraries. We so appreciate the community partnership,” commented Tammy Blakely, Director of Pupil Services at SVUSD. The teens cleaned thousands of books during the project. “It felt great to serve others. The books really needed cleaning, and I’m

sure the kids will enjoy their reading experience much more now!” said 17-year-old Blake Miyahara from Rancho Santa Margarita, a conference participant. In summing up the youth conference, Teri Cooper, a church youth leader from Dove Canyon, reflected, “Activities like these help teens become contributing citizens in their communities. They’re going to remember this weekend for a long time.”

Mormon Helping Hands Donate Labor and Food By John Skousen Mormon Helping Hands volunteers got up early Saturday morning, April 27, 2013, to serve as the manpower for two big projects helping the local community in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The “manpower” included men, women, and children. The two projects included a landscaping project at the Canada Vista Park and the other was a food drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank organized at the local chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

At the park a total of 191 volunteers provided 287 hours, which included applying mulch material to a large dog park, planting decorative and landscaping plants along a bare area by the parking lot, and sanding and repainting several park benches. Cary Haine, Construction Project Coordinator for SAMLARC stated enthusiastically, “The manpower here is phenomenal!” He continued: “It’s a really great thing to get these families out here help. It gives everyone something to contribute, the kids, youth, and adults.” Haine also wanted to thank Mission Landscape Sammy Miyahara, from Rancho Santa Margarita, planting decorative and landscaping plants along the parking lot at Canada Vista in Rancho Santa Margarita. that donated the mulch and plants. With such a large and well-organized work force, Haine confessed, “The challenge is to find more things to do.” And Mormon Helping Hands Organizer, Bethany Warnick, did find more to do by planning a food drive with the Second Harvest Food Bank. On the same Saturday morning, adult and youth volunteers collected food and hygiene items from their neighbors and brought them to the chapel to sort and organize. At the end of the

morning, the volunteers collected a total of twenty-three 55-gallon tubs of donations, which exceeded the original goal of 18 tubs. Whether working at Canada Vista Park or collecting and sorting the Food Bank donations, on Saturday the Mormon Helping Hands effort gave families an opportunity to have a good time working together while giving service to their local community.

Visit to the Mighty Battleship USS Iowa is a Great Local Half Day Trip Story By Tom Weinum Photos by William Casper If you want to impress the family and take them to see something really BIG, Take a half day trip to travel back in time on a real honest to goodness battleship, the “Big Stick”, the USS Iowa stationed in nearby San Pedro, Ca. just under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Not far from the harbor freeway and 405, this battleship was in combat in WWII, the Korean War and the Cold War and is still available for Naval duty til 2020. It is the only Battleship to patrol the Atlantic arena. It is berthed just off Harbor Blvd in San Pedro. The ship is open for self-guided tours plus several retired Naval Personnel available to answer questions. Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years. Designated the “World’s Greatest Naval Ship” due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technology. During her more than 50 years in service, IOWA has welcomed and escorted our nation’s Commander in Chief on many occasions. No other battleship in our nation’s history has been host to more U.S. Presidents including FDR, Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush. The Iowa is one of the last Battleships available to tourists including her sister ships Missouri, New Jersey

and Wisconsin. The USS Iowa is open 7 days per week, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours of operation are: September through May: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with the last ticket sold at 4:00 PM. June through August: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with the last ticket sold at 4:00 PM. The tour cost $18 for Adults (ages 18-61), $10 for children (ages 6-17, $15 for Seniors (ages 62+) and Active/Ret/ Reserve Military with ID with the proceeds going to maintain and preserve the Pacific Battleship Center. USS IOWA is not currentlyADAaccessible. However, accessibility for disabled guests will be improved over the next year. There are many obstacles on the ship such as uneven decking, high door frames and many sets of stairs that are safety hazards. For that reason, no wheelchairs are allowed aboard the ship and those using canes and walkers should use extra caution. Visiting the USS IOWA can be a very rewarding family experience and children are welcomed on board! Parents must closely supervise their children at all times. Strollers are not allowed on board the USS IOWA. For small children, the use of a front carrier (Baby Bjorn-type carrier) is suggested. There are several stairs and obstacles on the tour. Children may not be carried up stairs unless they are in a frontfacing carrier. If they are not in a carrier and

cannot climb the stairs safely on their own, then the child and a guardian must remain on the main deck of the ship. Parking is $1 an hour in her huge parking lot.The self-guided tour will take about 2.5 hours and is historically enlightening. One starts with photos against several different backdrops of the ship that can be purchased at the end of the tour. You proceed up the gangplank to the main deck where Turret #2 is sealed as a Memorial to the April 19th, 1989 flareback accident that took 47 sailor lives. Visitors proceed to the Wardroom where Officers would eat and enjoy their time off and go up a stairway to the famous FDR & Captain’s cabin to see where world dignitaries were entertained and the only bathtub at sea. From there, it’s up two levels to the smaller guns and Page 10

the Flag Bridge that controls the ship. The tour then heads down to the aft Main Deck, passing the after main battery guns and entering a hatch to tour the crews’ Galley and Mess deck area below on the 2nd Deck. There could have been as many as 8,000 meals prepared each day for large crews during World War 2. Proceeding further aft visitors will be entertained with several short movies reflecting Iowa’s history, the recent refurbishment efforts, and the tows from Northern California to LosAngeles. There is a well-stocked Gift Shop on the lower deck. The tour ends on the Aft deck with many photo opportunities. This is a big ship with quite a detailed history. Rancho Santa Margarita’s Standout Basketball Player Lauren Oosdyke Contemplates Her Future After College

Indefensible! Lauren Oosdyke (21) easily sidesteps defender and fires her deadly accurate mid-court scoring shot. Photo by Paul Dorweiler

By Laura Vallen, UNC For graduating college students, the month of May is filled with uncertainty as they choose to continue their education. Others move home for a while and many begin a career , but before Lauren Oosdyke has to make them she gets to do something most people her age only dream of. Oosdyke, a five-year veteran for the Northern Colorado Bears, is headed to China for a run with a United States All-Star team. The 22 year-old Oosdyke was raised in Coto de Caza, Calif. and graduated from Santa Margarita Catholic High School in May 2008. Following a standout career at SMCHS, including two straight placements on the Orange County All-Star First Team, she decided to leave the friendly confines of California and attend the University of Northern Colorado, a Division 1 school an hour north of Denver. Oosdyke’s career with the Bears has been one for the record books, literally. She ranks in the top five in Northern Colorado history in four different categories. She ranks second in free throws made (394), fourth in career scoring (1,548), fifth Page 12

in rebounding (763) and fifth in steals (183). While at UNC, she was the anchor to completely turn a losing program into a consecutive 20 game season winner the last three years. She will represent the US on a team touring China and competing against teams from Australia, China, and Brazil. She will be part of a team comprised of All Star players from around the nation who are graduating seniors. The team will stay in China from May 1-15 and play nine games during the stretch. Players from U. of Michigan, Purdue, Iowa, Gonzaga, Ill. State, Univ. Wisconsin. Greenbay and Iowa dot the roster with Oosdyke. Oosdyke left Northern Colorado not only in many of the school’s record books, but also prominently in the Big Sky Conference’s annals. She is ranked among the top 15 players of all time in the Big Sky Conference for field goal percentage, assists, free throw percentage and makes, steals, defensive rebounds and minutes played. As well-known as Oosdyke has become on the basketball court, she also has a solid academic reputation off the court. She graduated in May 2012 with bachelor degrees

The Coto de Caza News

in both broadcast journalism and communications while earning Big Sky All-Academic honors throughout her college career. She was also a sports anchor for UNC’s news station, Bear News. In addition, Oosdyke was part of an internship program at CBS channel 4 in Denver in the sports department during the summer of 2011. In May 2013, Oosdyke will graduate with a master’s degree in sports administration, a Northern Colorado program that is ranked among the top five in the world . This semester, along with her master’s program and the commitment that basketball entails, Oosdyke took on an additional internship with the marketing team from Northern Colorado’s athletics department.Oosdyke will be interning with Learfield Sports Marketing in Boulder upon her return from China. Though Oosdyke’s life-long dream is to be a sports broadcaster and sideline reporter, she says she is ready to explore all the different opportunities she may have for the future. “Being an athlete in college has taught me a lot of things about time management, respect, determination and hard work,” Oosdyke says.

“I feel if I can get through five years of college basketball while completing my master’s degree and my undergraduate degree all at once, then I can get through anything..” Her family is her strength and foundation. The entire Oosdyke clan was often found sitting courtside during her games wherever they were. She says her dad is especially inspiring. “He works a ton of hours and so does my mom, but somehow my dad makes it to all of our games. He has pushed me to be the player I am today.”“My teammates are my 13 best friends,” Oosdyke says. In fact, she still desires to be a part of a team and has been speaking to agents about possibly playing overseas next year. But for now, her mind is focused on May 1st, when she will find herself in China. “I’m really excited to travel and see the different types of cities, food and people. I’m also excited to play with a group of girls that are great players from all across the country. It will be an incredible experience. Wherever I end up Rancho Santa Margarita will always be in my mind.”

While local dentist Dr. Michael Tessier is well known for his exceptionally gentle and friendly care of children, cosmetic restorations for adults, and both conventional and Invisalign orthodontics, his office also focuses on his patients overall health. “I read an article the other day that said, in effect, sleep could be hazardous to your health. They were referring to sleep apnea, the cessation of breathing while sleeping. I was especially interested in this topic as my office provides significant relief for people who suffer from this particular discomfort,” said Dr. Tessier. “Sleep apnea can be caused by extra redundant tissue (fat) in the throat or neck which can reduce the diameter of or even cut-off the windpipe while one is in a relaxed sleep-state. It can also be caused by the lower jaw relaxing back into the neck, allowing the base of the tongue to lie on the windpipe, like a manhole cover, cutting off the air flow to the lungs. This causes the body to wake up enough to take a deep breath. These wake-ups are often gasps for air, and may even include sitting boltupright in bed, in a panic. Either of these restrictions can happen as many as fortyfive times a minute (yes, a minute) preventing deep, replenishing sleep, and causing a dramatic reduction in the amount of oxygen that gets into the blood stream. This oxygen reduction negatively impacts the brain, and is damaging or stressful to the heart muscle, and may be fatal in some cases. “Just the other day, I had a conversation with a clinical psychologist about the negative results of sleep deprivation, like from sleep apnea, or just plain too-few hours of sack-time. She said that the biggest issue is the replenishment of neuro–transmitters (chemicals in nerve connections ((synapses)) like serotonin, acetylcholine, or dopamine) that could, among other things, lead to depression. The conversation went to medicinal sleep aids, like Temazepam or Ambien. I asked if taking drugs like that would be habit forming on a long-term basis. The doctor was of the opinion that the negatives from sleep deprivation were worse than the negatives from long-term use of drugs. “An easier solution than drugs is often to use one of our sleep apnea appliances, which are simple, unobtrusive in-the-mouth appliances that keep the jaw forward and the base of the tongue off the windpipe (trachea). In more severe cases, use of a CPAP device, a positive-pressure air pump that keeps the windpipe open, might be indicated,” said Dr. Tessier. So, if you or the person sleeping next to you or your next-door neighbor is snoring loudly or waking-up gasping for air, a call to Dr. Tessier’s Office for a complimentary consultation appointment may be in order. Dr. Michael Tessier’s office is located at 28562 Oso Parkway at the intersection of Oso and Antonio Parkways in the retail center near the carwash and Starbucks. Thinking While Drinking HAPPY GRAPES

By David White “Is a bottle of wine ever really worth $100?” This is a question I’m regularly asked by friends who aren’t obsessed with wine. My answer is always the same. “Of course,” I begin. “For starters, there’s supply and demand -- bottles sell for what the market says they’re worth.” “But to your real question,” I continue, “no one is dropping that sort of money simply because a wine tastes so good. On those special occasions when you splurge -- whether for a $25 bottle, a $50 bottle, or even something that costs $100 or more -- you’re hoping for something beyond deliciousness. You’re hoping for a wine that makes you think.” Regardless of a wine’s price tag, this

answer helps explain how wine enthusiasts approach wine. Those of us who obsess over what we drink aren’t just looking for something tasty; we’re looking for an experience. Whether a bottle costs $15 or $150, we’re hoping for something great. And a great wine makes you think. This concept was made clearer last month while listening to Abe Schoener, an iconoclastic California winemaker, deliver a lecture in Washington, DC. Until 1998, Schoener was a professor of ancient Greek philosophy at St. John’s College in Maryland. That year, he headed to the Bay Area for a sabbatical and met John Kongsgaard, a Napa Valley vintner who was quickly gaining a reputation for making interesting wines. Kongsgaard’s children were interested in St. John’s, so the two men linked up. They quickly hit it off. Even though Schoener didn’t plan on staying in Northern California, he soon became Kongsgaard’s protégé. Fast-forward 15 years, and Schoener is still in California. He makes wine as if he’s still a philosophy professor, now teaching students about the limits and possibilities of wine. Like a vinous Socrates, Schoener explores wine by constantly questioning established conventions.

Unsurprisingly, the results -- bottled as the Scholium Project -- are extremely unusual. The name is derived from the Greek word for “school” or “scholar,” so quite literally, the wines are a scholarly endeavor. Some are hits; some are misses. All make you think. Thanks to the wines -- and a captivating personality -- Schoener has developed somewhat of a cult following. So he’s touring the country on a sold-out lecture series. In Washington, Schoener asked attendees to ponder several oil paintings from the National Gallery of Art as he discussed “precision and transparency in winemaking.” That Schoener’s lecture would spark a dialogue about the purpose of wine isn’t surprising. Nor is such a dialogue unusual. Consider the wisdom of legendary winemaker Jacques Lardière, who recently retired after 42 years with Maison Louis Jadot in Burgundy. “When you drink wine, you must realize you are drinking something more than wine,” Lardière explained to a recent gathering of oenophiles in New York City. “It’s a very meditative beverage.” That meditative element is what inspires and fascinates wine enthusiasts. Obviously, a delicious wine doesn’t have to make you think. Inexpensive

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Provençal Rosé, and reasonably priced Argentine Malbec are just some examples of wines that are typically consumed thoughtlessly. And there are many unappetizing wines that demand contemplation. For my palate, some skin-fermented whites and purposefully oxidized wines fit this bill. So do a few of Abe Schoener’s projects. Great wines are both delicious and thought-provoking. That combination is what wine enthusiasts seek, regardless of price. One might compare this pursuit to music. It’d be hard to contend that listening to a song is worth much more than a dollar -- iTunes’ highest priced songs are $1.29. But virtually everyone is willing to pay a premium to see his favorite artist perform live. Bruce Springsteen’s newest album, “Wrecking Ball,” can be purchased for $13; tickets during his recent tour were priced at $98 each. At Springsteen concerts, attendees undoubtedly get their money’s worth. Next time you pull a cork, think about what you’re drinking. Perhaps you’ll discover a great wine.

2013 KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival Celebrates 25 Years

Celebrating its 25th year, the 2013 KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival, presented by Saddleback College radio station KSBR (88.5 FM), returns to the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park in Mission Viejo, on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Organizers are excited to announce the second annual Taste of the Bash, which was a wildly successful element introduced last year and will again feature more than 25 restaurants showing off their finest creations. The Taste is an added value so those purchasing tickets to the concert will be admitted to the Taste of the Bash for no additional charge. The Birthday Bash is the

major fundraising event for KSBR. The unique event features more than 30 contemporary jazz artists with headliners often leaving their own bands behind to play with each other. Dave Koz, Joe Sample, Brenda Russell, Boney James, David Benoit, Hiroshima, Rick Braun, and Peter White are just a few of the musicians who have appeared in the past. Because of contractual obligations, many of the most popular artists cannot be announced until they actually step on stage, which makes the event even more fun and surprising. The event will once again include a special tribute to Veterans. Saddle-

back College’s Veterans Memorial is the most significant tribute to veterans at any community college campus in the nation. In recognition of this event and the role that the college’s VETS (Veterans Education and Transition Services) Center plays in the community, the festivities will include a color guard performance and a special musical tribute to kick off the concert. Broadway Star Betty Buckley Appears in Segerstrom Center Cabaret Series Star of stage, screen and television, actress and singer Betty Buckley closes Segerstrom Center’s 2012-13 Cabaret Series May 16 – 18 in Samueli Theater. Buckley will perform song standards as well as selections from her recent album, Ah, Men! The Boys of Broadway, which features hits from West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, The Fantasticks, La Cage aux Folles, Roberta, Sweeney Todd and many others. And, in the inimitable Buckley fashion, she will charm audiences with whimsical behind-the-scenes stories from her exciting career. Daily Variety notes, “With a range that glides from a heartbreaking warble to an unabashed belt, Buckley stands comfortably as one of the most versatile, original vocalists on Broadway or anywhere else.” She will be accompanied by pianist John McDaniel. Tickets for Betty Buckley are $72 and now available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Betty Buckley, who has been called “The Voice of Broadway,” is one of musical theater’s most respected and legendary leading ladies. But she is an actress/singer whose career spans theater, film, television and concert. For a career filled with triumphs, Buckley was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2012. Buckley won a Tony Award® for her performance as Grizabella, the Glamour Cat, in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS. She received her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a musical for her performance as Hesione in Triumph of Love and an Olivier Award nomination for her critically acclaimed interpretation of Norma Desmond in the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway. Her other Broadway credits include 1776, Pippin, Song and Dance, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Carrie. Off-Broadway credits include White’s Lies, Lincoln Center’s Elegies, the original NYSF production of Edwin Drood, The Eros Trilogy and Juno Swans. She has performed leading roles in Gypsy, Threepenny Opera, Camino Real, Buffalo Gal and Arsenic and Old Lace. Buckley starred in the London production of Dear World in 2013 and in Promises, Promises. In films, Buckley co-starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, in Brian de Palma’s Carrie, Bruce Beresford’s Tender Mercies, Roman Polanski’s Frantic, Woody Allen’s Another Woman and Lawrence

Kasden’s Wyatt Earp. On television, Buckley appeared in The Pacific for HBO and twice on the Kennedy Center Honors. She also starred for three seasons in the HBO series Oz and as Abby Bradford in the hit series Eight is Enough. Buckley has guest starred in numerous television series, miniseries and films for television including Evergreen, Roses for the Rich, Without a Trace, Law & Order: SVU, and Pretty Little Liars. Buckley has 15 CDs to her credit, among them Bootleg: Boardmixes From the Road, Quintessence, Betty Buckley 1967 and the Grammy-nominated Stars and the Moon. She received her second Grammy nomination for the audio book The Diaries of Adam and Eve. Her newest CD, Ah, Men! The Boys of Broadway was released by Palmetto Records

in August 2012. Ghostlight, produced by T Bone Burnett, will be released in 2014, also on Palmetto Records. Conductor, composer, orchestrator, record producer, Grammy and two-time Emmy Award winner John McDaniel is Buckley’s accompanist for her Center engagement. For six years he was the bandleader for The Rosie O’Donnell Show. He wrote the show’s theme song and received five Emmy nominations for Outstanding Music Direction and Composition. On the show, he worked with such artists as Tony Bennett, Dick Van Dyke, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, Liza Minnelli, Barry Manilow, Chaka Kahn and Madonna. McDaniel made his debut as a producer on Broadway with Brooklyn, the Musical in 2004. He also was the supervising music director, handled

the arrangements and orchestrations and produced the top selling live cast recording. The show ran for 10 months on Broadway and later enjoyed a national tour. Recent Broadway shows include Bonnie & Clyde, for which McDaniel did the orchestrations. He received a Drama Desk nomination for Best Orchestrations and produced the cast recording. He was also the music director for the Tony-nominated Catch Me If You Can. McDaniel made his operatic conducting debut in 2011 with Daughter of the Regiment at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. His own opera, titled Pirates, for which he created arrangements and orchestrations, played in his hometown at Saint Louis Muny Opera in 2012.

Rancho Eagle Scout, Brandon Neilson Receives Honor Medal For Heroism

Brandon Neilson with his parents Alan and Jamie Neilson at the Annual Boy Scout Recognition Dinner. photo by Alan Neilson

by Karen Lake Eagle Scout, Brandon Neilson, received the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Honor Medal for Heroism at the annual BSA recognition dinner on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Garden Grove Crown Plaza Hotel. Many local Boy Scout leaders from his troop, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), attended the ceremony. Pat Brokaw, an LDS boy scout leader said, “The Boy Scout program has been a great way to train our youth to have the character and skills they need so they are ready to serve and help those around them.” Brandon’s family lives in Rancho Santa Margarita and one day in December 2011 his mother asked him to pick up his sister at volleyball practice at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. When he was walking to pick up his sister, he heard someone yelling in the distance. He followed the sound of the distressed voice and found the high school custodian at the bottom of the pool. As a trained eagle scout, he just jumped in to the pool to bring the man to the surface and then out of the water to successfully save his life. Jose Luis Mendoza, a father of four, did not know how to swim and was grateful Brandon heard his cry for help.

Al Stephenson returns to an influential banking position, but finds it hard to reconcile his loyalties to ex-servicemen with new commercial realities. Fred Derry is an ordinary working man who finds it difficult to hold down a job or pick up the threads of his marriage. Having had both hands burnt off during the war, Homer Parrish is unsure that his fiancée’s feelings are still those of love and not those of pity. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon his arrival, and each crisis is a microcosm of the experiences of many American warriors who found an alien world awaiting them when they came marching home. .Actor Michael Hall who played Rob Stephenson, son of Al Stephenson, will be in attendance. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the local chapter of the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists injured veterans. In addition, all current and former members of the military are encouraged to attend the event in uniform. Girls Inc. of Orange County, Women Helping Women (WHW)/Men2Work, Orangewood Children’s Foundation and Orange Coast College collaborated to provide a day of empowerment which allowed over 330 at-risk teens and foster youth to receive the necessities in order to attend their prom or another special event in style and gleaming with confidence. The day started with breakfast and an inspiring kick-off message, followed by pre-prom shopping for their dress and accessories; a workshop on makeup, skin care, and hair styling for their big night, an interactive workshop on media literacy and fostering a positive body image; and a class on personal branding and presenting yourself professionally on social media. The entire day is provided absolutely free of charge to all attending girls with the help of over 300 volunteers from the Orange County community and Orange Coast College, who hosts the event each year. “It is important to equip our girls with the knowledge and confidence they will need to be successful beyond their prom night,” explained Veronica Escobedo, Director of Program Services at Girls Inc. of Orange County. “Today isn’t just about giving these girls a pretty dress; it’s about showing these girls that regardless of who you are or what you look like, every girl is beautiful.” Tina Aldatz, founder of Foot Petals and Orange County resident, delivered A volunteer from Classic Glamour Dolls provides one-on-one make-up instruction to one of the Belles the opening ceremonies’ keynote address to the 600+ attendees. “Don’t let your circumstances define the way you lead the rest of your life,” said Aldatz. “Today is an opportunity to learn, receive and continue to grow.” Over the course of eight months, a twenty-five person event committee consisting of representatives from each of the four agencies pooled their resources and secured over $500,000 worth of in-kind and financial sponsorships for the event. Top sponsors included DSW Shoes, Alfred Angelo, Cookie Lee, Hoyu America, Physician’s Formula, UPS, and National Charity League (Newport-Harbor). All in all, the teens were provided with a selection of 2,019 dresses, 1,224 pairs of shoes, 283 purses, 1,301 pieces of jewelry and 400 make-up goodie bags. One Belle exclaimed, “I feel like a princess!” Belle of the Ball was established in 2008 as a day of self-esteem for atrisk girls throughout Orange County. The goal was to allow young girls the opportunity to attend their high school prom despite their financial or social situations. Through the years, the event has served more than 1,100 girls and continues to grow.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property.
